It has been four years now. Four years since Death had tried to cease to exist in her most dear friend's life.
After the eventful day of Miku's confession, Luka had distanced herself. Not the usual five meters distance, but a distance that seems so far to reach. She was afraid of what will happen if she sees the cyan haired girl so she does the only logical solution to disappear from Miku's life completely.
Gone were their meeting by the park, the calm banter they would have and the enjoyment of talking to someone. It has pained Luka so, but, she thinks, this was for the best.
Despite that, she still couldn't possibly do it. Making Miku think she never existed in the first place was a difficult task, as she would often find herself strolling by the park every now and then. And it wasn't like she has the most common existence, for sure a single glimpse of Death would make the cyan haired girl instantly notice her and that was a dangerous risk.
But…Death still couldn't stay away.
She couldn't stay away especially when she felt a magnetic pull whenever her dear friend was around.
It did not escape Luka how the cyan haired girl would always, always come looking for her in the park. Sometimes she would bring a friend around (a smaller blonde girl with blue eyes and white bow tied on top of her hair), other times she would study by one of the benches, but often times she would just stare at the surroundings trying to spot the only thing she came looking for.
Death wanted to come closer, but she knows that it was asking for trouble. Her creator had noticed their interaction back then and would only frown whenever they would beckon for her to come. It was forbidden, was what they said back, telling her that there was a place for the beginning and the end, there should always be a balance between the two realms. But still she didn't listen… She should've.
Luka had stayed away from Miku, but she still can't completely stay away. She has come to observe her dear friend away from her prying eyes, noting her interaction with people and the bond she shared with someone special. The pink haired figure had only watched silently when Miku had finally accepted the boy's confession, noting how she felt…heavy.
It confused her so. How could the embodiment of Death feel such things? Being the existence that brings people to their end, the job came with the sense of unfeeling. But, Luka told herself, she was always an odd one.
Cool blue eyes watched in happiness? Sadness? Confusion? At how Miku would smile at her significant other and would hold his hand as they would often stroll by the park. Luka could only smile at how her friend had finally found someone she cared about without hurting her…But despite their relationship Luka noticed one thing.
Why does Miku look lonely?
A couple more years passed and Miku had graduated. There were tears all around her, specifically her father, and cheers saying 'they could finally stop studying!' Luka smiled at the distance at how the cyan haired girl smiled that day and her rosy cheeks are wet with sweat due to how hot it must have been in that clothes of hers, but still Miku was happy. Death's eyes soften for Miku, and without a cue she looked at her pocket watch, another life to end. Taking one last look at her friend, she walked away without ever noticing how a pair of teal orbs looked to where she was standing just a moment ago before she was swept off of her feet by her lover and engaged in a happy kiss.
Death had come to notice something about Miku. She was tired, but still the ever growing brightness that was in her eyes was still as blinding as ever. Luka had always followed her friend around, and it was enough for her to know that the cyan haired girl was doing well. Life had thrown itself at the girl and she was facing it head on, she has come to admire it once again.
It surprised Luka when she saw how happy once again Miku was when her significant other proposed, bent in one knee looking nervous as he waited for an answer, and the cyan haired girl couldn't help but hug him tenderly while pecking at his lips as tears streamed in her eyes. Luka could…only smile at how happy Miku was…At least, that's what she wanted to feel for her friend, but the closeness of both individuals made Luka avert her gaze.
It was for the better, she tells herself.
And she has never felt something heavier in her chest.
But still she was happy for Miku for finally finding someone who would grow old with her.
Out of habit, Death looked at her pocket watch and once again a soul was to be put to rest. She smiled sadly at it, then she looked at the happy couple before her and smiled again before leaving. Still failing to notice those teal orbs that settled once again to where she was a minute after she left.
Marriage came after that and there were once again tears all around. The vows said that day were heartfelt and sincere, it made Death hum to herself. Miku looked so ethereal in her wedding dress, how her eyes twinkle like the billion stars in the night sky and cheeks as rosy as a blooming rose. Luka could only look longingly at how she looked, she looked so different from what she remembered.
Now, gone were Miku's childish looks, but still they tend to seep out every now and then, and the face lines are more prominent at how happy she was, but her eyes were still the same as ever. Still as beautiful as the day they met, and Death could only feel happiness for Miku. It was bittersweet in a way, but she wouldn't have it any less.
Miku was happy and that is all that matters.
Luka notes that time has been precious to her, she came to realize it after witnessing countless of child births. Often times the first cry made her swell with happiness and the adoration she would send the mother's way as if she had just created a miracle, well, in a way, she did.
Miku looked tired but the happiness at the sight of her little girl before her made her ignore her exhaustion. Luka couldn't tear her eyes away at the tiny human being that was created by her most precious friend, it was by far her second most favorite moment in existence. The first being her meeting with Miku.
Death noted how Miku's husband covered her with kisses all over her face and for a long time in a while, Luka finally smiled at the family. She couldn't ask anything more beautiful than this, and all she could do is wish them all the happiness in the world.
The cooing of the child at her mother was all that Luka could hear and she looked gently once again at the child before it's identical teal orbs settled to where she was hidden away and Death could only smile before placing a finger on her lips as if to keep it a secret before vanishing once again.
A couple…Time passed and little Hina was now four years older. Luka still visits her dear old friend and has come to enjoy watching the bundle of joy. She has still kept her existence to Miku a secret and she has learned to not regret any second of it.
But little Hina was a bit difficult. The first she realized that the child could see her was when she was two, staring over at the garden to where Luka was hidden away before beckoning Death to come play with her. It was a surprise for Luka at first, but knowing her mother, she learned to just get used to it.
Sometimes, when Miku and her husband were away and it was just a sitter and little Hina all alone, Death would oblige at the young girl's request and play with her at a distance, Luka could only giggle how it must've looked for the sitter but still the sound of her joyous laughter made her care less. At night, Death would only watch over the child with a smile on her face as the rhythm of her breathing calmed everything all around her.
It was precious.
As more years passed, Miku's husband passed away. It was when Hina was fifteen and she does her best to console her grieving mother. Luka watched on with the heavy feeling in her once again as she saw the never ending tears that found its way on the cyan haired woman's face. It was…sad.
It's been so long since she felt that feeling ever since the passing of Miku's mother and father. Hatred bubbled up inside Death as she stared at her hands in disgust. It was always so unfair, but what else could she do? It wasn't like she could do anything.
Miku's silent cry as she rested her head on her daughter's made Death's heart clenched. It pained her so to bring such pain to her most precious friend. Bringing herself to take out the pocket watch from her pocket, Luka could only frown.
Why did she have to end lives? Is that really her only purpose? But still, she knows that it was. It was a tragic way to exist, never having any links besides her creator who was barely present and wondering why she existed in the first place. Her creator, ever knowing, told her that she had the most important job to bring weary souls to his kingdom and she believes them. She believes them because that was what she has been doing since.
Cool blue eyes looked at the scene in front of her once again, not wanting to stay any longer than she has. She looks at Hina and then Miku, Death frowns.
"I'm sorry…" She whispered before leaving once again with her heart heavy on her chest and clenching when she hears Miku say.
"Don't leave me."
With those words, Luka hesitated but she knows that those were words that was meant for her husband. Without turning back, death left without another trace not once noticing how Miku was now looking at her retreating form.
…
Luka didn't return to her dear friend for a year. It has been so busy as of late, an excuse she instills and fail to convince herself.
She couldn't go back.
She has taken away too much from her friend.
But…
She just can't seem to stay away completely.
Finding herself back after a year of absence, she stood in front of Miku's home. Away from her daughter's sight and especially away from the teal haired woman.
Fall has started. The green leaves that adorned the house now lay wasted on the ground. It was, in a way, sad if you think about it. But maybe it was just Luka being too euphemistic.
She heard the door open, and quickly, death immediately hid herself. It was a bit ridiculous of her invisible existence, but you really couldn't blame her for hiding from the only, well now two, person she was avoiding.
Cool blue eyes watched as Miku went out the door and locked it, grumbling under her breath when it didn't cooperate on the first try. For what seemed like years, Death slowly stepped out of her hiding place and waited for the other to turn around.
And as Miku did, the first thing that happened was her dropping her keys. Eyes widening, as her mouth opened and closed, while tears were starting to form in the corner of her eyes.
With trembling hands, she placed them in her quivering lips as she couldn't believe what she was seeing and with a stutter she uttered.
"L-Luka?"
How long has she waited to hear her own name from her dear friend's lips. But…all she could do was avoid those shinning gaze fixed upon her.
Still she gathered all the courage she could muster and slowly she met Miku's eyes and smiled gently at her, just how she did way, way back.
"It's been a while."
The teal haired woman opened her mouth once again, her eyes conflicted and it looked like she wanted to say something. Something that should've been said all those years ago, and Luka waited. As always, and all Miku settled for was-
"Do you… Do you want to come in?"
Death's smile faltered and all thoughts came in her head. She just doesn't know if she should involve herself with Miku's life once again not after everything and-
It scares her.
It scares her to know that she couldn't really stay away from something she wants.
Death gave her a sad smile, because she knows she shouldn't…She couldn't. Not when she has taken too much.
"I shouldn't," She said, and Miku's expression fell. "-and I'm sorry…for everything." With one last pained smile she does the only thing she does best and ran away.
For good this time, she tells herself.
Miku could only stand there in disbelief before the waterworks starts. She has always known every single time Luka has appeared and maybe hoped that someday that 'Death' would come for her. Not in a literal sense, but just to talk.
Just to say sorry for all the horrible things she said to her because 'Death' was not like how the others depicted it. She was gentle, soft spoken, calm, and-
"A Coward…"
Alright, I know it's been a while since I updated this story and said that it was a 3 part chapter but I'm adding another (last) chapter because it just didn't fit the tone in what I'm going for.
