Chapter 1: The Dragon Raid
'This is Berk. It's 12 days north of hopeless and a few degrees south of freezing to death. It's located solidly on the meridian of misery. Our village. In a word, sturdy. And it's been here for 7 generations, but every single building is new. We have fishing, hunting and a charming view of the sunsets. The only problems are the pests. You see, most places have mice or mosquitoes. We have…'
Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III and his twin sister, Hicca, opened the door their door to reveal a giant Dragon. They quickly shut the door as it blew fire in their direction. "…Dragons." The village of Berk was under attack from several Dragons. The Vikings attempted to fight the Dragons off as they attempted to take their livestock.
'Now most people would leave. But not us. We're Vikings. We have stubbornness issues.'
Hiccup and Hicca ran out of their house, making their way through the battle field. Both of them were 15-years-old. Hiccup hand neck-long, dark chestnut brown hair, and wore a green shirt with a brown furred vest, forest green pants and brown furred boots. On his right arm, he wore a tan cloth bracer that reached from his elbow to his hand with a ring looping around his middle finger. Hicca had long braided auburn hair that reached to her waist, a modest sized chest, and wore a sleeveless green shirt with a brown fur hood, black pants, a tan furred-rim cloth secured around her waist and black furred boots. They dodged the passing Vikings, causing a few clumsy accidents. Suddenly, they were knocked to the ground after a Dragon nearly blasted them.
'My name is Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III. And this is my twin sister, Hicca. Great names, I know. Well, they're not the worst. Parents believe that a hideous name will frighten off gnomes and trolls. Like our charming Viking demeanor wouldn't do that.'
As Hiccup and Hicca started to recover, another Viking ran up to them and shouted in their faces. "Morning." He greeted before heading back into the fight. Hiccup and Hicca ran past other Vikings who were telling them to get back inside. They weren't concerned for them, but it was their father that was concerned. But Hiccup could barely listen as he clutched his head in pain. "You okay, bro?" Hicca asked. "Yeah, just the headaches. Nothing serious." Hiccup said. They were about to cross the road when another Dragon swooped it and set the path ablaze. But then, someone pulled on their vest and hood. "Hiccup! Hicca! What are they doing out again…? What are you 2 doing out?! Get inside!" A big muscular man with a big bushy braided beard said, sending them off to their destination.
'That is Stoick the Vast, chief of the tribe. They say that when he was a baby, he popped a Dragon head clean off its shoulders. And do we believe it? Yes, we do.'
As Stoick watched the skies, he saw a Dragon trying to take off with one of the sheep. He grabbed an empty cart and tossed it at the Dragon, forcing it to drop the sheep. "What have we got?" He asked. "Gronckles, Nadders, Zipplebacks, oh, and Hoark saw a Monstrous Nightmare." One of the Vikings said as another fire blast hit the village. "Any of the Furies?" Stoick asked as a small fireball hit his shoulder pad. "None so far." The Viking said. "Good." Stoick said, brushing off the fireball.
Hiccup and Hicca ran through the main square as the Vikings lit their torches and raised them up. Hiccup clutched his head, trying to drown out the sound. They made it to the blacksmith's and walked over to their aprons, taking off their vest and hood. "Oh, nice of you 2 to join the party. I thought you 2 had been carried off." A muscular man with a braided mustache and missing his left hand and right foot said as he pounded a bent sword with a hammer attachment. "Who us? No, we're too quick for them to catch." Hicca said as she and Hiccup moved one of the prosthetics into a slot on the wall. "Yeah, we're way too muscular for their taste. They wouldn't know what to with all this." Hiccup said, trying to be muscular. "Well, they need toothpicks, don't they?" The man asked as he detached his hammer and replaced it with pliers.
'The meat-head with the attitude and interchangeable hands is Gobber Styrkarsson. Hicca and I have been his apprentices since we were little. Well, little-er.'
Hiccup and Hicca ran over to the window as some Vikings came up and deposited their broken weapons. They picked them up and carried them over to the burning coals. As they worked the fires, Hiccup clutched his head again. "Your headaches appear to be getting worse there, Hiccup." A voice said. Hiccup and Hicca looked up to see 4 quadruplet siblings, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. "You can say that." Hiccup said as they helped with the fire.
'These 4 helpful chums are Gobber's quadruplet kids, Oflugin, Hylli, Blóm and Sál. They've been like siblings to me and Hicca growing up. They pretty much helped us through rough times.'
Noticeably, Oflugin's right leg was prosthetic. He lost his right foot to a Timberjack when it ambushed him and his siblings during a Dragon hunt in the forest.
"We move to the lower defenses. We'll catch them in time with the catapults." Stoick said as he led a group of Vikings down the village ramp way as a Dragon was setting the buildings on fire.
'See? Old village, lots and lots of new houses.'
"Fire!" A Viking called. "Okay, let's go!" A girl's voice said. Hiccup and Hicca looked out the window and saw a group of 5 Vikings around their age run towards a burning building with a water container, loading water into buckets.
'Oh, and that's Fishlegs Ingerman…'
Fishlegs was a husky 14-year-old blonde-haired boy with a large brown-furred shirt, tan pants and brown boots.
'…Snotlout Jorgenson…'
Snotlout was a 15-year-old boy with black hair, a helmet with spiral sheep horns, his shirt tucked into his pants with open stitching around his chest and a black vest over it, dark gray bracers on his arms and matching fur boots.
'…the Twins, Ruffnut and Tuffnut Thorston…'
Ruffnut and Tuffnut, who were fighting over a barrel of water, were both 15-years-old with blonde hair. Ruffnut's hair was braided from the sides to her back and wore a light brown, animal skinned vest and a dark blue tunic in tatters, long dark grey cloth braces from her elbows to her wrist, a metal leather belt, dark brown leggings and dark blue furry boots. Tuffnut's hair was straight down past his waist and wore a dark brown furry animal vest, a light pale green tunic with a brown sash, long brown arm cloth bands from his elbows to his wrists, light grey-blue pants and dark brown furry boots. Both wearing helmets studded with 4 horns.
'…and…Astrid Hofferson.'
Astrid was 15-years-old with blonde braided hair with half covering her left eye, wearing a blue-steel shirt, shoulder pads, tan cloth bracers on her arms, dark blue pants, a skull emblazoned belt on a spiked skirt, and brown fur boots. As a fireball hit nearby, her entire body was illuminated to match with her beauty. Hiccup stared heavenly at her beautiful form.
'Astrid Hofferson was the coolest, most talented Viking of her generation. Ever since I was a little boy, I had a huge crush on her. Every time I looked at her, I felt my heart speed up, my face warm up and my knees go weak.'
Fishlegs, Snotlout and the Twins joined her as they walked towards the blacksmiths.
'Oh, their job is so much cooler.'
Hiccup and Hicca watched as they ran past. "Hey, Hiccup." Astrid greeted as she ran past. But before Hiccup could greet her back, Gobber pulled him back by the collar, easily lifting him up by the shirt. "Oh, come on, let us out please. We need to make our mark." Hiccup said as Gobber set him down. "He's right. We need the mark." Hicca said. "Oh, you both'll make plenty of marks, in all the wrong places." Gobber said. "Please, just 2 minutes. We'll kill a Dragon and our lives will get infinitely better. I might even get a date." Hiccup said. "They have a point, Dad." Hylli said. "You 2 can't lift a hammer, you 2 can't swing an axe, you 2 can't even throw one of these." Gobber said, holding up a bola. Suddenly, a Viking took the bola and threw it at one of the Dragons, bringing it down. "Okay, fine. But this, our own invention, will throw it for us." Hicca said, gesturing to a weapon that she and Hiccup built themselves. But as she patted it, it accidentally instantly opened up and threw a projectile at one of the Vikings outside, knocking him out. "Ouch." Sál said with a cringe.
"See? Now, this, right here, is what I'm talking about!" Gobber exclaimed. "But it was a minor calibration issue." Hiccup argued. "We can fix it." Hicca said. "Hiccup, Hicca, if you 2 ever want to get out there to fight Dragons, you 2 need to stop all…this." Gobber said. "But you just pointed to all of us." Hiccup argued. "Yes, that's it. Stop being all of you!" Gobber said. "Oh." Hiccup and Hicca said, seeing what Gobber was doing. "Oh, yeah." Gobber said. "You, sir, are playing a dangerous game." Hiccup said. "Yeah. Keeping this much raw Viking-ness contained? There will be consequences!" Hicca exclaimed. "I'll take my chances. Sword, sharpen, now." Gobber said, handing the Haddock Twins a sword. "Sorry, guys. You know our dad's as stubborn as yours." Blóm said. "Yeah, tell us something we don't know." Hiccup said as he and Hicca brought the sword over to the sharpener and proceeded to sharpen the sword.
'One day, we'll get out there. Because killing a Dragon is everything around here. A Deadly Nadder head is sure to get us at least noticed.'
The Deadly Nadders, medium-sized Dragons with winged forelimbs, a crown of spikes on their skulls and a tail covered in poisonous spikes that it can fling at will, were attacking a flock of sheep while carrying away a few.
'Gronckles are tough. Taking down one of those would definitely get me a girlfriend in Astrid.'
The Gronckles, smaller-sized Dragons with wings like a hummingbird, a large stout body and a clubbed tail, were stealing fish from the fish drying racks.
'A Hideous Zippleback? Exotic. 2 heads, twice the status.'
One of the Hideous Zipplebacks, one of the most unusual Dragons in the world, medium-sized, with 2 heads on 2 long serpentine necks, 2 tails, rounded spikes reaching down from their heads to their tails, was spewing poisonous gas into one of the houses through one of its heads before the other ignited the gas, blowing up the house.
Stoick and his group were on one of the village catapults. "They found the sheep!" One of the Vikings reported. "Concentrate your fire over the lower bank!" Stoick ordered. "Hurry up! Fire!" The Vikings aimed the catapult and fired the loaded boulder, hitting one of the Deadly Nadders. Suddenly, Stoick noticed a fire igniting below them.
'Then, there's the Monstrous Nightmare. Only the best Vikings go after those. They have this nasty habit of setting themselves on fire.'
Just then, a Monstrous Nightmare, a medium-sized Dragon with sprawled claw-tipped wings, 2 sets of spikes on its back, and tiger striped skin patterns all over its body, climbed its way up the catapult, its body completely engulfed in fire. "Reload! I'll take care of this." Stoick said as he started fighting the Monstrous Nightmare, striking it with his hammer and dodging its bites. But then, the Monstrous Nightmare flew away at the sound of a high-pitched noise. That noise caught Hiccup and Hicca's attention.
'But the ultimate prize are the Dragons no one's ever seen. We call them the…'
"Furies!" A Viking cried. "Get down!" Another exclaimed. The Vikings ducked down as several blasts struck the catapult and 6 unseen Dragons flew past it at high speed. "JUMP!" Stoick exclaimed as he and the Vikings leapt off the catapult as it collapsed. Hiccup and Hicca carefully watched the scene as the Furies came back around and hit the catapult's tower again.
'These things never steal food, never show themselves and…never misses. No one has ever killed a Fury. That's why Hicca and I are gonna be the first.'
Hiccup and Hicca walked over to Gobber and his quadruplet children. "Man the fort, kids. They need me out there." Gobber said as he put on his axe prosthetic and prepared to head out. But then he turned back to face the Haddock Twins. "Stay. Put. There." He said strictly. Hiccup, Hicca and the quadruplets just stared at him in confusion. "You know what I mean. And you 4 better make sure they stay or else." Gobber warned. "Yes, Dad. We won't let them out of our sight." Oflugin said. "I know you won't." Gobber said before shouting and charging into the fight. As soon as he was gone, Hiccup and Hicca turned to face the quadruplets with a smirk. "Who's ready to kill some Furies?" Hiccup asked. Hylli readied his axes. Blóm readied her mace. Sál readied her crossbow. "Lead the way, Haddocks." Oflugin said, grabbing his spear. They took the opportunity, grabbed the bola shooter and pushed it out of the shop. "Hiccup! Hicca! Where are you going?!" One of the Vikings asked. "Get back here!" Another exclaimed. "Yeah, we know!" Hiccup called. "We'll be right back!" Hicca called as they pushed their invention through the chaos.
Meanwhile, 3 Deadly Nadders had cornered a flock of sheep. But then, Stoick threw a net on them. "Let's get them!" A Viking exclaimed. They charged towards the Nadders as one of them breathed fire. "Mind yourselves! The devils still have some juice in them!" Stoick exclaimed as he grabbed the Nadder breathing fire and clamped its mouth shut.
Meanwhile, the Haddock Twins and the Styrkarsson Quadruplets headed into a quiet spot in the village. Hiccup and Hicca pushed their invention up to the edge of a cliff, opened the shooter, armed it and waited for their target. "Come on. Give us something to shoot at. Give us something to shoot at." Hiccup said. As they waited, they heard a Dragon cry in the distance. "Listen. They're out there." Hicca said. "Where? Where's the cry coming from?" Sál asked as she aimed her crossbow. They squinted into the night sky as the Dragons' cries were getting closer. Hiccup and Hicca got their shooter ready as the Furies got close enough and destroyed the catapult in front of them. "Now!" Hiccup shouted. He and Hicca fired a bola from their shooter. As the force of the shot pushed them off, they heard a snap and a roar as the Styrkarsson Quadruplets helped them up. They looked up and saw one of the Dragons fall from the sky into the woods. "Oh, we hit it!" Hiccup cheered. "We hit it!" Hicca cheered as she and Hiccup hugged. "Yes, we hit it!" Hiccup cheered. "You did it!" Hylli cheered. "Now there's a couple of Vikings." Oflugin said. "Did anyone else see that?" Hiccup asked. Suddenly, he clutched his head in pain, feeling anger and rage near him. "Hiccup!" Hicca cried in concern.
'There's also something you should know about me. When me and Hicca were 3, we had an encounter with a Dragon during a raid. As I tried to protect Hicca, it sliced my right arm, which left me with a large claw scar that's covered up by my bracer. But here's the strange thing. Some of the Dragon's blood mixed with mine, causing me to possess a unique gift; the ability to read the emotions of Dragons and feel their presence near me. It makes everyone think I'm crazy as they think that Dragons are just mindless creatures with no emotions at all, other than to kill Vikings. So, everyone just shuns me for it. Except for Hicca and the quadruplets.'
The group turned around to see a Monstrous Nightmare climb up behind them and crush the bola shooter under its foot. "Except for you." Hiccup said. As the Nightmare lifted its head, Hiccup could read its emotion and knew how it felt. "Uh, Hiccup, is this Dragon…" Hicca started to ask with worry. "Angry? Yep." Hiccup said with worry. The Nightmare roared as it started to attack. "Run, Haddocks!" Sál exclaimed as she ran up to shoot the Nightmare, but it swatted her aside with its left wing, sending her crashing into a cart. Hiccup and Hicca screamed as they started to run. Oflugin, Hylli and Blóm tried to attack, but the Nightmare swatted them aside with its right wing before chasing after Hiccup and Hicca.
Hiccup and Hicca screamed as loud as they could, getting the attention of Stoick. He turned around to see the Nightmare chasing them, sighing in annoyance. "Make sure they don't escape!" He ordered as he took off to help Hiccup and Hicca. "Right!" A Viking called.
Hiccup and Hicca ran through the village streets, dodging the Nightmare's fire and hid behind a pillar. Hiccup felt the rage in the Nightmare's flame. "He's really angry." He said. "I can tell." Hicca said. They peered around the corner, but it wasn't there anymore. "It's right behind us." Hiccup said. As the Nightmare prepared to attack, Stoick appeared and tackled it. As Stoick fixed his helmet, the Nightmare tried to breath out fire, but nothing came out. Only a few burps of lava. "You're all out." Stoick said. He started punching and kicking the Nightmare, forcing it to retreat.
'Oh, and there's one other thing you need to know…'
Stoick turned around to the burning torch as the wood snapped and collapsed, revealing the Haddock Twins, who knew they were in trouble. As the torch collapsed, the pyre crashed through the steps. Hiccup and Hicca cringed through every crash. "Sorry, Dad." Hiccup said. "Yeah, sorry, Daddy." Hicca said.
'That's right. Stoick the Vast…is our father.'
The pyre crashed through the net holding the 3 Nadders. Everyone watched as the Dragons flew off with the livestock they managed to get. "Okay, but we hit a Fury." Hiccup said. But Stoick grabbed him by his vest and Hicca by her hood, and dragged them off. "No, it's not like the last few times, Daddy! We really actually hit it." Hicca said. "You guys were busy and we had a very clear shot. It went down just by Raven Point. Let's get a search party out there before-" Hiccup tried to say. "STOP!" Stoick shouted, making the twins shut up. "Just…stop. Every time you 2 step outside, disaster follows. Can you not see that I have bigger problems? Winter is almost here and I have an entire village to feed." Stoick explained. "Well, between you, me, Hicca and the quadruplets, the village could do with a little less feeding, don't you think?" Hiccup asked jokingly. Hicca and the quadruplets, having recovered from the Nightmare's swatting them, snickered at that. "This isn't a joke, Hiccup! Why can't you 2 follow the simplest orders?" Stoick asked in annoyance. "We can't stop ourselves! We see a Dragon and we just have to…kill it!" Hicca exclaimed. "She's right. It's who we are, Dad." Hiccup said. Just then, a Dragon cried in the distance. He clutched his head, sensing the Dragon's pain. Stoick rubbed his temple, seeing that Hiccup was getting another one of his 'migraines.' "Oh, you and your sister are many things, Hiccup. But a Dragon killer is not one of them. Especially with your migraines getting worse. Get back to the house." He said. Hiccup and Hicca frowned, feeling dejected by their own father. Again. "Make sure they get there." Stoick said. Gobber walked up and gently smacked the twins in the heads, gesturing them to move. "I have their mess to clean up." Stoick said.
As the 3 walked away, with the quadruplets following behind their father, they walked past the teenagers. "Quite the performance." Tuffnut said. "I've never seen anyone mess up that badly. That helped." Snotlout said teasingly. "Thank you. Thank you. We were trying." Hiccup said sarcastically. Gobber pushed Snotlout to the ground as he and his quadruplets walked by. Astrid and Ruffnut watched them as they left, feeling bad for Hiccup and Hicca.
Later, they returned to the Haddock house. "We really did hit one." Hiccup said. "Sure, Hiccup." Gobber said. "They're not lying, Daddy. We were there." Hylli "Yeah, we saw them hit one of the Furies." Blóm said. "I'll take your words for it." Gobber said. "He never listens to us." Hicca said. "Well, it runs in the family." Gobber said. "And when he does, it's always with this disappointed scowl like someone skimped on the meat on his sandwich." Hiccup said. "Yeah, tell me about it. It makes me wish I was a brother instead of a sister." Hicca said. "Oh, come on now, lass. When he found out he was having twins, he was the proudest father I've ever seen." Gobber said. "Yeah? 15 years later and look how that turned out. 'Excuse me, barmaid! I'm afraid you brought me the wrong offspring! I ordered an extra-large boy and an extra-large girl with beefy arms, extra guts and glory on the side! These here, these are talking fish bones!'" Hiccup exclaimed, mocking Stoick. The quadruplets snicker at that. "Now you're both thinking about this all wrong. It's not so much what you look like, it's what's inside he can't stand." Gobber said. Hiccup and Hicca were dumfounded at how he said that. "Thank you for summing that up." Hiccup said. "Yeah, you're a real help." Hicca said. "Look, the point is stop trying so hard to be something you're not." Gobber said. "We just wanna be one of you guys." Hiccup said, going inside. "Is that really so hard to ask?" Hicca said as she followed her brother inside. Gobber sighed sadly, feeling sympathy for them. "I think we should stay with them. Help cheer them up." Oflugin said. "Yeah, maybe. Look after them." Gobber said. The quadruplets walked inside as Gobber walked away. But unknown to him, Hiccup, Hicca and the quadruplets exited out the back door to search for the shot down Fury.
Wow! How was that?! The start of Hiccup and Hicca's journey through the world of Dragons. During an attack on the village of Berk, they and their quadruplet friends shoot down one of the 6 unseen Dragons known as the Furies, but of course, their father, Stoick the Vast, doesn't believe them, thinking that they only make things worse. But will they be able to find the Dragon they shot down? Will they kill the Fury if they find it? Leave a review if you'd like.
