The Drive

Hello readers! I apologize for SUCH A LONG WAIT for this chapter and the following one. I meant to finish this story and took a long overdue break. Thanks for sticking with this story and I hope you enjoy reading the ending as much as I enjoyed writing it. Cheers!

Louis comes back to the house in an hour or so to see Gil and Sara playing with Henry. Jack had already texted him to let him know what was going on. Sara looked up and smiled at him as he closed the door. Henry ran over to say hello and Louis bent down to talk to the boy. Gil wanted to work up the courage to talk to Sara and tell her how he felt, but he wanted to do it alone. Henry didn't need to hear if there was some kind of fallout. He deserved to be spared that regardless of what happened between him and Sara. He pursed his lips before he turned to Sara. "Can we go for a walk where we used to? Not right now, but maybe later today or tomorrow?" Sara war surprised by the invitation, but she tried to remain composed even when inside she was feeling nothing but. "Okay. Louis and Jack will be here tonight so I could go on a drive instead if that works better for you?" Gil nodded, "that would be perfect." Gil stood up before saying, "I should probably get going so you can sort things out for yourself and ummm I need to get something to Brass that I promised earlier today." Sara nodded and she got off the ground as well. Henry came back over and Gil said goodbye to the small boy before showing himself out of their old house.

Sara breathed a sigh of relief knowing that she at least kept her composure a little bit longer. She had to get herself together before tonight. Gil wanted to have a conversation and that at least meant something would be said between the two of them. She paused; he could just want to talk about Henry and you need to be prepared for that too. She sighed and ran her fingers through her hair. She pursed her lips and took a moment to herself. She went into her room and put on a clean shirt and pants and went to the bathroom to clean up. She wanted to bring some semblance of normalcy amid a meeting she was so unsure of.

Gil went back to his hotel and freshened up. For the first time in his life, he had to be sure he used his words and spoke well. He had to make sure he told Sarah how he felt because he wasn't going to get another chance. He paused and took a deep breath.

He got ready and got back into the car to pick Sarah up. He wanted to go out to the desert to really get some alone time with her. Hopefully he would actually get a moment to be with her. Without anyone else. Maybe then he could actually tell her how he felt. I have to find a way to tell her. She deserves to know even if she says no and can't stand the thought of being together again, she deserves to know on her terms. Gil stopped for a small bouquet of flowers and a few snacks. Even if Sara didn't touch them, he wanted her to know that he went through the effort to get something nice for her.

He pulled up to the house and smiled. Placing the car in park, he went up to the door to knock. He could hear Henry squealing and both Jack and Louis trying to get Henry to calm down. The sun was going down and it must be getting close to bedtime. Gil waited another moment before knocking again, no one could hear that he was at the door.

Sara couldn't decide what to wear. She kept changing shirts and pants and shoes and she couldn't just pick. She shouldn't be this nervous this man has seen more than enough of my clothes and… other things… for me to be this worried about what he's going to say about a simple outfit for a drive this evening.

She knew it was because she was nervous in the first place. What on earth does this man want to talk about? He's always kept me guessing even when we were together. I'm willing to let him into Henry's life, but only if he's willing to commit. I can't let him walk out of Henry's life the way he did to me.

She finally settled on a simple top with a worn flannel over it and jeans. She wasn't dressing for a date and wanted to keep the man guessing if he was going to be doing the same to her.

She heard the knock on the door. Jack and Louis looked at her and gave her a thumbs up and she exhaled before she opened it. Knowing who it was, but still just as anxious as ever.

Sara opened the door and Gil pursed his lips. "Hello again." Sara came outside and closed the door. "Hey, Gil. We should get going. Not sure if they are going to need my help later if he's still being fussy." Gil nodded. "Understood."

He walked ahead of her and opened the passenger side door. Sara stepped into the car and noticed the flowers and snacks immediately. The man was making some kind of effort she just wasn't sure who it was for yet.

Gil started the car and pulled out of the driveway as the pari took off at dusk in silence.
