AVATAR
Love can be considered a funny concept, as it may be there are many different versions depending on the individual. For example, there is always a clear definition of an outcome, no matter how people can simply put it. In the end, its either love that wins, or something remotely on the opposite side of the spectrum.
But for Katara, love had every hold on her life. When she was little, the very thought of love all got crushed the moment her mom died. After that whole incident, Katara didn't know if she could ever love someone the way her parents did. Though she really wanted to. A companion for life seemed like the perfect solution to all her pain and sorrow, and if anything, she would be away from her brother, Sokka, for one second.
Her brother followed her everywhere, and even though he was family, Katara really needed her own personal space. She really couldn't blame Sokka though, after their mother died, Sokka was scared that the fire nation would simply kill the rest of them off.
And currently…he still believed that.
Even after the war, Katara still noticed her brothers' little flinches or bouts of protection. But unlike last time, it wasn't just Katara's problem, it was also Aang's. When Sokka said that Aang was family, he was not kidding. Every single time there was a large event, if Aang or Katara walked off by themselves for even a little while, Sokka would find them and give them a mouthful.
Aang might or might've not mentioned his irritation to her.
Overall, it wasn't something that she decided to attach herself to. Katara understood her brother's concern and simply took it out on snowballs. It worked for her, and frankly, made everyone around her start to shake with laughter.
If Katara could be anything, then comical relief it is.
But there was a love that she couldn't ignore. When Katara met Aang for the first time on that cold iceberg, she felt something that she had not felt since her mother's death. Though, Katara promised herself that she would not get attached.
Everyone she loved always got hurt.
Aang certainly didn't have that burden, that poor boy who had already been through enough as if, didn't need to get more hurt than he already was.
So, when Aang took off on his flying bison, Katara felt relief and sadness at the same time. She really wanted Aang to stay, to ease her own burdens, to provide a light that none of them could've provided.
But she also wanted him to leave. The very thought of him getting hurt because of her unlucky charm wasn't worth it. Maybe he could bring back some hope, but what happened when that hope didn't last?
Her village didn't need that temporary relief, hope had already died long ago, and certainly didn't need to be relit. And it wasn't all that hard considering that there simply wasn't much more than disappointment, Katara didn't really know Aang that personally.
But when he left her on the ship, Katara felt much more hurt than before. Sure, she knew that the invasion was one of the only things that would save them in the long run, but why did Aang have to go?
When he kissed her, she didn't want it to end. But yet, he ended their romantic gesture and took his glider. Never as much in her life did Katara want to be an airbender, she wanted to fly away and grab Aang by the foot, bringing him back to her reality.
Her reality…what was her reality?
She didn't know
Katara felt so confused, everything seemed to warp through the air. Feelings clashed; the very thought of war almost made her shun from her own fear.
She wanted Aang
But she couldn't love him with the war going on
What about after the war?
There were too many questions swirling through her head all at once. Katara wanted to win this war, but she was also scared for it to end. That meant facing her feelings head-on, and answering questions that she didn't have answers to.
Though when the war ended, Katara knew exactly what she wanted to do. The moment she saw Aang walk outside to see the beautiful sunshine, Katara knew that it was time.
She wanted Aang
And that was ok. There were no longer any feelings holding her back. Throughout the entire journey, Katara knew that she loved the boy with the blue arrow.
The moment he got struck down, she realized how scared she was to lose him. The moment he walked out in those traditional monk clothes, she realized how proud she was to love him. The moment she saw him fall out of the iceberg, she realized that he was different.
Every moment lead up to this. And it wasn't all that weird considering how her confidence and love for the teen avatar only grew as she started to walk outside. And after they hugged…Katara only felt ready for more.
She loved Aang with her entire fiber being. Katara wasn't scared to admit that. So, when she leaned in for a kiss, and Aang closed the distance between them, Katara knew that he was the one.
She also knew that there would be lots of roadblocks between then and the near-seen future. But weirdly, that didn't bother her. The entire war, she hid her true feelings, her true capacity to love someone. Now, Katara had never felt so happy, her own system rejoiced with excitement.
That happiness never stopped. And it only increased with time, when their first child was born, Katara felt more joy enter into her life. She was raising a family, a new profound love that her young adolescent self didn't even think was possible.
Sure, it might've taken her a whole war to figure out how to respond to her growing feelings, but what mattered the most was taking the next big step.
Even if it was just a small kiss
