Double Trouble

Chapter 1

A loud banging sound had Paul sitting up right in bed. He stared at the door, head still foggy with sleep. He groaned and rolled out of bed to see what had caused that loud noise. He swore once he found it, he was going to hurt it. Whatever it was. Paul stumbled through his dark room to the closed door and stubbed his toe on something along the way. He cursed angrily and limped down the hallway. Knowing it was probably Embry or Quil he was ready to let them have it. He had just finished a long afternoon patrol and just wanted to sleep. Paul swung the door wide open ready to yell but lost all words when he saw who it was. He flipped the front porch light on to be sure his eyes weren't just playing tricks on him in the dark. He felt his mouth drop open at the sight before him. It was a face he hadn't seen in years.

"Maggie?" Paul asked, his voice still horse from sleep.

"Hi Paul," she said, her voice as soft as ever. Maggie Fisher was the last person Paul thought he would ever find on his front steps at midnight.

"What are you doing here Maggie?" Paul asked, frowning down at the girl. She opened her mouth to answer then shut it, biting her lip.

"Well… it's kind of… hard to explain." She said, twisting her hands together, nervously.

"Did you want to come inside." Paul opened the door wider and stepped back to let her in.

"I-I have to get something from the car first." She muttered. Paul nodded watching her with curiosity as she rushed back out into the dark. A beat-up red car sat behind Paul's truck, and she went to open the back door. He could hear her talking gently with whoever was in the back of the car. She stood up with something slung over both shoulders. Then she shut the door with her foot and walked slowly back to the porch. Paul's mouth fell open again when he saw two small bodies clinging to her. When she got to the steps, she squatted down to set them on their feet. One of them, a boy, had straight brown hair and the other, a girl, had curly pigtails.

"Luke hold your sister's hand please." Maggie whispered gently and the boy reached over to grab the small girl's hand. Then Maggie stood up and led them up the stairs. She looked up at Paul and smiled sadly. He had grown up with Maggie and her sister… Amy. And now Maggie was a mother? He couldn't believe it. Maggie walked past him with the two children clinging to her legs.

"I went to your parents house to find you." Maggie said, standing in the middle of the living room looking nervous. A ping of pain went through Paul's chest. "There was nothing there of course. Miss Dooly from across the street was our walking her dog and gave me your new address."

"House fire, it happened the same year you guys… disappeared. They didn't make it." He answered. Maggie's eyes widened then tears filled them.

"I'm sorry Paul." She said softly. He nodded and rubbed the back of his head awkwardly. Paul looked back down at the two children. The girl had her face buried in Maggie's pant leg and the boy was looking at Paul. His little grey eyes were filled with curiosity.

"I… guess you're pretty shocked huh?" She asked. Paul looked at her and she smiled looking down at the two kids. The boy looked up at her and she knelt down with a chuckle. "Will you stay here while I go in the kitchen with Paul for a few minutes?" She asked gently. The girl gasped and wrapped her arms around Maggie's neck.

"No." She cried. Maggie wrapped her arms around the small girl.

"Just for a second Luna. If I'm gone too long you can come get me." She promised. Paul wasn't really paying any attention to them though. He was doing maths in his head. These two kids were around three years old. When he had last seen Maggie, she still had two months until her birthday. So, she'd had to have been fourteen when she got pregnant. As soon as that thought hit him, he looked at her shocked. Once she had the small girl untangled from her body, she frowned in confusion at the look Paul was giving her.

"Are you okay Paul?" She asked. Paul motioned for her to follow him to the kitchen. He flicked on some lights as he went. "You two stay here." She said to the kids before following Paul into the kitchen. "I'm sorry Paul, about just showing up like this but-"

"You're a mother?" He hissed. Her eyes widened in shock.

"What?" She asked.

"You got pregnant at what? Fourteen?" He asked. Even though he hadn't seen her in so long, it still made him mad thinking of a guy getting her pregnant so young.

"No Paul, you miss understood! Those kids are not mine." She said quickly holding up her hands. Paul stared at her for a second, not sure what to say.

"Then… who's kids are they?" He asked.

"Yours." She said quietly, looking down at her feet. Paul just stared at her like she had lost her god dam mind.

"Excuse me?" He asked.

"Remember when you and Amy went to 'see a movie'?" She asked doing air quotes with her fingers. Paul looked down. He remembered alright.

"She got pregnant that night." Maggie said with a sigh looking very uncomfortable. "That's why we left. Dad sent us to grandmas and that's where we've been the past couple of years. Grandma's memory has been getting bad and we had to put her in a home two months ago. She had been looking after most of the kids needs. Without her there and with me still in school Amy had to do a lot more and well it must have been too much. She left three days ago and hasn't come back; she won't answer my calls or text." Maggie continued and her eyes filled with tears. She sniffed and tried to rub the tears away but more took their place. "I'm sorry Paul. I tried to tell her that we needed to tell you sooner. But she was afraid you would reject them. When she left, I didn't know what to do. I'm not seventeen yet! If the police found out they could have been taken away. I was scared and this was the only thing I could think of." She cried. Tears were pouring down her cheeks and Paul had to take a seat. Not trusting his legs to hold him any longer. He went to say something but a small thumping noises stopped him. He looked up just as the little girl came running into the room with tears in her eyes.

"Maggie, I want ta' go home." She whimpered, wrapping her arms around Maggie's knee.

"We can't sweetie. Not until mommy comes home." She said shakily.

"Why did she leave?" Paul asked. Maggie sighed taking a seat with Luna on her lap. The little girl wrapped her arms around her aunt's neck.

"I told her she needed to take better care of the kids, I was coming home from school, and they hadn't eaten since I had given them breakfast. The house was a mess as well and she refused to clean or help in any way. We got in a huge fight about it. Then the next morning, Luna came into my room and said Amy was gone." Maggie had tears in her eyes. Luke walked in. He looked upset when he saw Maggie and his sister and ran to them. Maggie made room and helped him climb up on her lap. "I don't know what to do now. I don't even know if I should have come here. It seemed like such a great idea last night in bed. But now… I don't know." Maggie said as Luke began playing with her damp hair. She smiled and caught his hand before he yanked it. Then she looked at me. "Well, what do you think?" She asked. Paul looked at her dumbly.

"Of what?" He asked. She motioned at the two children in her lap.

"Of Luke and Luna." She said.

"I-I don't know." Paul stuttered. Luna sat up and looked at Maggie.

"I'm tired aunt Maggie." She said rubbing her eyes. Maggie looked down at her sadly.

"I know sweetie, I'm sorry." She said, kissing her forehead.

"You can stay here tonight." Paul was surprised by the words coming out of his mouth.

"I don't want to give you anymore trouble." Maggie muttered.

"Maggie if you don't stay here where are you going to go? Your parents are gone." Paul said with a sigh. Maggie looked at him with tears in her eyes. She sniffed and nodded.

"Thanks." She was able to get out. Paul got up to show her to his room. She and the kids would stay in there and he would sleep on the couch.

"I don't want to kick you out of your room Paul. We'll sleep in the living room." Maggie said rocking Luna back and forth in her arms. Luke had his thumb in his mouth and clutched to Maggie's pant leg with his free hand. Paul shook his head.

"No, I'll stay on the couch. The beds big enough for the three of you." He said rubbing the back of his head. Luna whimpered and Maggie nodded before setting the girl down on the bed. She rubbed her teary eyes and looked at Paul with fear. He frowned and she looked back at her aunt with another whimper. Maggie whispered to her gently and Luna seemed to calm down a little. Luke was looking at Paul curiously. When Paul looked at him, he grinned. His cheeks dimpled.

"Um… I'll talk to you in the morning Maggie." When he spoke, she looked over her shoulder at him and nodded, biting her lip. He closed the door and stood looking at it for several minutes as he replied the last ten minutes in his mind. It still hadn't sunk in yet. There was no way he could be a father. Yes, he had slept with Amy, but it was both their first times. How could those two minutes have resulted in two little humans. He laid down on the couch and somehow, fell asleep. When he woke up it was to find a pair of grey eyes looking at down at him. Paul jumped and moved away as Luke stepped back in surprise. He looked just as nervous as Paul felt.

"Can I help you?" Paul finally asked.

"Aunt Maggie told me to give this to you when the clock said six zero zero." He said in a whisper, pointing to the digital clock on the top of the TV stand. Paul looked to see it was six o'clock. He sat up and rubbed sleep from his eyes. Luke stepped further back, and Paul saw that Luna was behind him, clutching a teddy bear to her chest. He was a little bigger than she was and was looking at Paul with a slight glare. Paul reached down and took the folded piece of paper from Luke's small hand. Paul frowned and unfolded the paper. He read the shaky handwriting slowly, not believing them.

Paul-

Please don't hate me. I have to find Amy. I'll try not to be gone long. There's a list of things they like and don't like in Luna's backpack. I'm sorry, but I have no other options. I hope you can forgive me. I will be back as soon as I can.

He read the note over and over again. Paul finally looked up at the two kids, his kids, with his mouth hanging open. He clenched his fist around the note. It was silent in the house; the only sound was Jared snoring in his room. Paul jumped up, making Luna whimper and cling to her brother. Paul didn't care.

He ran to Jared's room, basically breaking down the door, and shook him awake. Jared sat up with a gasp and looked around until he saw Paul. Then he glared pushing Paul off him.

"What the hell is wrong with you?" He asked angrily.

"Jared, I need you to do something for me." Paul said yanking him up.

"Let go of me!" Jared yelled. Paul didn't care he used all his strength to drag Jared out to the living room. Jared only stoped fighting Paul when he saw the two scared children.

"Why are there two kids here?" He asked Paul confused.

"I don't have time to explain. I need you to stay here with them while I go try to find Maggie." Paul said running into his room to grab his keys and a shirt. "Kid." Paul said pointing at Luke. He looked at Paul horrified.

"How long ago did your aunt leave?" He asked. Luke held up his hand and showed four fingers. An hour after he had gone to bed. Paul ran out the door and got in his truck. He had to find her, or he was going to be stuck with those kids. He drove out of his driveway hitting the main road well over the speed limit, he took off out of town. He got halfway to Forks by the time it dawned on him that Maggie was long gone, and he had no way of finding her. It took all his strength to turn the truck around.
