Chapter 3

Paul had hung around Sam and Emily's house for most of the morning but he had to go shopping. Luna was completely out of diapers and it wasn't even lunch time yet. He was finding out quickly that Luna had a tiny bladder. So he had no choice but to strap the two toddlers in his truck and head to Forks. Paul had asked Emily to come with him but she'd told him he had to do this on his own. So he entered the grocery store thirty minutes later with Luna clinging to his leg and Luke following after them. He went down three aisles before he found the diapers. He stared at all the packs of diapers in horror, trying to decide what to get. He finally found the kind that Luke was using and then the kind Luna had been wearing. When he turned around only Luna was there. He felt panic rise in his chest as he couldn't see Luke anywhere. Paul looked down at Luna.

"Where's your brother?" He asked urgently. She looked at him and shrugged. Paul swung her into his arms and ran down the aisle. He couldn't find him anywhere and was about to start yelling for him when he came to the cookie aisle and found him staring at the colourful packets. Relief flooded Paul's body. But that was soon overtaken by anger. He clenched his teeth and stomped over to the boy. Luke looked up at Paul with a grin and pointed to a packet on the shelf.

"Can I have it?" He asked in a chipper voice.

"No." Paul said stiffly, picking him up and walking to the checkout lines. He got a disapproving look from one lady who had a little boy of similar age to the twins. Paul couldn't care less what she thought though, she had no idea how bad his day was going.

"But I-" the boys words were cut off.

"No!" Paul repeated louder and Luke shrank back. Paul paid for the diapers and carried them and the kids back to the truck. Paul buckled them in and went around to the drivers seat and got in, slamming the door. He drove for a while, clenching the wheel angrily. Paul didn't know why he was so angry. He heard a noise and looked over at the two children sitting next to him. Luna was watching him with wide eyes, holding her bear and sucking her thumb. Luke was curled up on the seat shaking and it took Paul a second to realise he was crying. Instantly Paul felt bad. He had gotten mad at Luke when he shouldn't have. He kept driving until they reached home and Paul sat there for a second, wincing at Luke's sniffles. He sighed getting out of the truck and walked to the other side. When Paul opened the door he unbuckled them and set Luna down on the ground. She latched on to his leg and Paul reached for Luke. The boy scooted away from his grasp. Paul took a deep breath.

"Come here Luke," Paul said gently. Luke shook his head. Paul climbed up to sit beside him and Luna's nails dug into his leg. She whimpered and he reached down to lift her up into his lap. "Luke I'm sorry. I just don't know how to do this. You guys are going to have to bare with me through this until aunt Maggie comes back. Do you understand?" Paul asked. Luke shook his head and Paul sighed. "Look, I'm your father and I'm going to make mistakes. So I need you to help me out." Paul said and Luke's eyes widened.

"You can't be my daddy. Daddy's dead." He said. Paul gaped at him in surprise.

"What do you mean dead?" Paul asked.

"Uh-ha! Mommy told me. We don't have a daddy." Luke said stubbornly. Paul studied him. The little boy seemed pretty sure about his statement.

"Listen Luke, I'm your dad. Your aunt Maggie told me. I don't know why your mother told you that." Paul said gently. Luke looked at Paul with his mouth open. His eyes were red from crying and his nose was very runny. Then his face broke out in a grin and he wrapped his arms around Paul's middle. He looked at the little boy and patted his back. Luke looked up at Paul and with those dimples and Paul's heart melted. At that moment his whole view on this changed. These were his kids and he would be their father. He suddenly felt angry at Amy for leaving them. Why would anyone leave these two beautiful children? Paul shook his head and wrapped his arms around the both of them and got out of the truck. Luna and Luke began chatting in their own toddler language. Paul listened and felt his lips tug upwards. Then he froze when he saw Embry, Quil and Jared on the front porch watching him with amusement. How Paul never saw them, he had no idea. Paul sighed and sat the two kids on the ground so he could get the diapers and their backpacks out of the truck.

"What are you doing here?" Paul asked them.

"Well I live here, and these hobo's brought food from Emily." Jared answered with an arched brow.

"Thanks. You can leave now," Paul said pointedly looking at Embry and Quil. The pair shrugged before walking off into the trees. "That was easy." Paul said watching them leave.

"Yeah, Emily warned them if they gave you any trouble they weren't allowed any of her cooking for a month." Jared smiled. "I didn't think it would actually work."

"Seemed like it did the job," Paul replied, taking the kids inside to get them changed… again.

"I'm taking Kim out tonight so I don't know when I'll be home." Jared said walking out of his room. Paul nodded from his spot on the couch. Luke and Luna were on the floor playing with some balled up socks. Paul realised he would have to get them toys soon, real ones. These things were going to be expensive. Paul wasn't mentally ready to think about how much these kids were going to cost him. Toys were only the tip of the iceberg.

"So… can I borrow the truck? Mine is still at the shop," Jared explained. Paul looked at him with a glare. "Please?" He pleaded. Paul rolled his eyes and tossed Jared the keys out for his pocket. "Thanks, have fun Dad," Jared smiled and walked out the door. Paul rolled his eyes to tired to reply. He picked up the remote to the TV and turned it on. He began flipping through channels when Luna gasped.

"Stop!" She cried. Paul looked down at her surprised by how excited she looked.

"What?" He asked worried. She pointed to the TV and Paul looked at what she was pointing at. What he saw made him shake his head. There was no way he was going to watch Peter Pan. He continued channel surfing.

"Pwease?" She asked. Her smile was gone and she had a sad pleading look on her face that had Paul flipping it back in seconds. She smiled and climbed up next to him on the couch. Luke climbed up on the other side and stuck his thumb in his mouth. Paul sighed and sat back.

"You guys like this?" He asked and both kids nodded, eyes glued on the Tv. Then Paul remembered the letter in the kids bag. Maggie said it was of things the kids liked. He jumped up grabbing the bags from the spot he had dropped them on the ground. He found the peace of line paper scrunched up in the front pocket of Luna's bag. It looked well handled.

Amy,

Breakfast at 7:00am

Snack at 10:30am

Lunch at 12:30pm

Nap at 1pm make sure they are awake by 3pm

Dinner by 6pm

Bedtime 7:30pm

They like Eggs, fish sticks, ham sandwiches, most fruits especially berries and grapes. (Please cut their grapes). They have started trying new dinner items but still refusing most vegetables. Limit their sugar or they will be hyper. Luna does not do well with dairy, it upsets her tummy, coconut milk or goats milk seem to be okay choices. Sometimes Luke get's a tummy ache afterwards but not as bad. Just give him ginger ail and he'll be okay. They are still in diapers but I have started potty training if you keep it up they should be trained in the next two months.

Please read to them at least one book a day, Tv is not the parent, you are. Tinkerbell Is Luna's New favourite thing so I have been reading Peter Pan to them and Luke is also enjoying it. Don't let them watch anything with dinosaurs Luna will have nightmares. Both of them are disliking baths at the moment but they will get over it, water toys are helping. Make sure there is always a night light on and keep reading that book I got you it should help answers your questions. I know you can do this Amy. Give them a hug for me,

Love Grammy

He was surprised that this wasn't something Maggie had done, their grandmother had left Amy instructions about her own children. He refolded the letter and stuck it in his pocket, it would surely be helpful. Looking at the clock on the wall it was well after their recommended nap time. Luna was already asleep on the couch and Luke's eyelids looked to be heavy so Paul picked them both up and carried them to his bedroom. He sat them on the bed, took their shoes off and covered them with the blanket. Luna rolled over onto her stomach and sighed. He smoothed her hair from her forehead and pulled the blanket over Luke. He looked at Paul with wide eyes, trying not to fall asleep and Paul smiled gently. Luke's eyes slowly closed and he was soon asleep. Paul decided to take a shower and moved to the bathroom. He was about to step into the shower when he heard a bang, then a scream. He grabbed a towel and opened the door. Paul yelped when a body slammed into his legs coursing him to stumbled backwards. Luna looked up at Paul with teary eyes. He knelt down beside her, holding the towel around his waist.

"What's wrong?" Paul asked.

"You weft me!" She cried.

"You fell asleep." He pointed out. She cried louder and threw herself at him again, making the towel slip.

"Listen Luna, will you please go outside for a second and I'll be with you in a few minutes. I have to shower." He said. Trying to reason with the little girl.

"No! don' weaf me awone!" She cried in his chest. He had no choice but to push her out the door so he could yank his jeans back on. She screamed and banged at the door until he opened it. She lunged at his legs again and he pulled her up into his arms.

"Hush Luna. Luke is sleeping. We need to be quiet." Paul whispered putting his hand over her mouth. She whimpered but quieted down. He clenched his teeth. He really wanted to shower but that didn't seem like it was going to be an option. This kid was a different kind of clingy.

"I'm hungry." Luna said from the floor.

"And I want a shower." Paul said in a grouchy tone. He'd tried to get her to go back to sleep but she was too awake by the time he got her to stop crying. Paul reluctantly got up and went into the kitchen. Luna followed after him dragging her teddy bear and sucking her thumb. Her brown curls hung in her eyes and bobbed as she walked. He began going through the food the guys dropped off and found things like, macaroni and cheese, bread, peanut butter, grape jelly, a packet of Oreo's, and bread. It was already five so he guessed it would be okay to go ahead and make macaroni and cheese for dinner. He took two boxes of the macaroni and knelt down in front of Luna.

"Do you like this?" He asked. She nodded, grinning around her thumb, and he couldn't help but grin back.
