Chapter 5: The Scout Regiment
Under the guise of being an amnesiac, Armin and the others explained the situation that Jason seemed to find himself in.
This world was on the brink of extinction. Humans were an endangered species, and titans (not beings that have power over time) were the new predators. A hundred years ago, humanity fled behind the walls to avoid extension. There was peace for a while. Until five years ago, two special titans broke through one of the three walls keeping humanity safe. The Colossal Titan and Armored Titan single handedly killed off half the population with just one breach. Armin had a dark look on his face for this part of the story. Jason didn't press any further on the subject.
There were three sections of the military keeping humanity safe from the titans. The Garrison, who protect and maintain order within the walls. The military police, who mostly deal with human affairs. And finally the scouts, the spear of humanity. Their duty was to go outside of the walls and discover a way for humanity to fight back against the titans. This was the group Jason was currently a part of.
"Wait, so we're outside the walls!"
"Technically not." Armin corrected him, "We are within a breached Wall Maria. That means humanity used to live in this part of the world as well. Before the breach happened of course." Armin explained patiently.
So, I'm in a different world. While hard to believe, it would explain a lot. Why his powers weren't working, why the mist wasn't present. The Greek and Roman gods just didn't have dominion over this place, thus making it harder for Jason to use his abilities. The lightning that hit the Female Titan came out of him, not the sky. Was that why I felt so drained? But something was off about their explanation.
"Armin, you said that the Female Titan was a human controlling a titan. So are all titans like that, being controlled by humans?"
The entire group felt silent for a while. Jason took a mental note. No more talking Jason.
"I don't think that's the case. It's only recently that we discovered that humans can turn into titans. My friend Eren, was the first case of this. His first transformation was almost a month ago now."
"But now that I think about it…" Jean began.
"Jean, stop thinking stupid things!" Reiner scolded.
Christa chimed in. "I agree with Reiner, let's focus on the mission guys."
He had more questions, but thought better then to keep prying. His ignorance was making the group uncomfortable, and if they were really in the danger they said they were, they needed to focus.
Armin however seemed to still be thinking about what was asked. He was different from the others. From what Jason could surmise, Armin knew something was off about him. But he seemed to trust him, enough to lie to his comrades for him. Should I tell Armin the truth? These weren't normal mortals after all. Would he believe me though?
Hey Armin, I'm actually a demi-god from another universe where I fight monsters on quests, and pick strawberries in a camp. Oh, and while I'm at it, I died on a yacht fighting an ancient emperor alongside my mortalized half-brother and ex-girlfriend.
He'll definitely have to keep that part to himself. At least for now.
Another green flare fired off in the distance.
"We are changing direction again? Where the heck are we headed?" Jean complained.
"Looks like the commander wants us to head for the forest." Reiner commented.
"I'm surprised that after all the casualties we took, we haven't returned home yet." Christa noticed
Armin stayed silent.
The forest they were headed towards had large trees. They were like baby red-wood trees. Not as large, but still not normal sized either.
Okay Jason, you said you wouldn't ask anymore questions, but something is clearly off. Despite knowing this, Jason wasn't the thinking type. Usually Annabeth, or even Hazel, had the larger brains of the group. All he could do was fight. But they weren't here right now.
What questions would Annabeth ask?
You're so hopeless Jason. Ask the obvious of course. Even in his imagination, Annabeth insulted. Now that the walls have been breached, what's their goal?
To plug the holes in the wall?
Okay yeah, but what's their main goal?
What do you mean?
Annabeth sighed in disappointment.
They just found out that humans can turn into titans. If the two titans that broke the wall were humans with similar abilities, it wouldn't matter how many times they plugged the walls.
That was true. They could just break the wall again and again. But that would mean they would have to know when the walls were being plugged.
Human Titans…
Human…
Spies?
The idiot finally gets it.
The scout regiment was trying to find out who breached the wall. If they could turn back into humans then that means that they could hide among the populace without even being noticed.
Thanks Annabeth.
"Armin… the Scout Regiment is pretty amazing."
Armin smiled. "Yeah, they are!"
