Jean and Armin sat on the bed that was previously occupied by Jason. He was sitting in the wooden chair. Both of them looked at him dumbfounded.
I knew this wouldn't work.
"Listen, I know that most of what I said doesn't make sense. And I don't really understand how I'm alive right now. But every word was the truth."
The two were speechless.
"Well?"
"Jason…" Armin began. "I want to believe you, but this all sounds… impractical"
"Impractical," Jean exclaimed, "try impossible!"
He looked to Armin, "How are we going to explain this to the Commander? Demigods? Emperors? Boats? Jason, I don't even know what the ocean is, how do you expect us to believe any of this exists?"
At the mention of the ocean, Armin flinched. But he kept silent.
Jason tried to think of something, anything that would help him. Then, "You guys had humanoid titans destroy half your city yesterday, something that I bet neither of you thought would ever happen within the walls." He held his hand out, "You guys know so little about your world, is it really so hard to believe mine exists?"
"That's different…" Jean began, but couldn't find the words. Jason could tell they still weren't convinced. Something this crazy, I gotta put my heart on my sleeve.
Jason took a deep breath, "I… I trust both of you. I don't lie to the people I trust."
Armin gave him a suspicious look. "If you trust us, why did you leave us in the forest?" They both looked at him for an answer.
Heart on your sleeve. He reminded himself.
"I was scared. Scared that you might get hurt because of me."
They were still confused. Jason took another deep breath.
"Everyone I'm close to has either died or been cursed. I didn't want you guys to get caught in my bad luck."
He couldn't look at them. It was such a childish thing to admit out loud, but he knew it to be true. His mother, Leo, and countless others were dead because of his ineptitude. His sister's life was so messed up, the only place she felt happy was hunting prey as a twelve year old for the rest of her life. And Piper had broken up with him over his shortcomings. She had insisted it was for other reasons but he knew it was because he couldn't make her happy.
Jean convulsed with laughter. Jason gave him a sharp look.
"Oh Jean." Armin shook his head.
"What?" Jean wiped a tear from his eye. "I laughed at something funny, what's so wrong with that?"
"There is a time and place for that."
Jason sat with his arms crossed.
Armin noticed his anger. He tried to explain by asking him a question, "Jason, who was it that saved you from the Female Titan?"
Jason shifted in his seat. "Well first you picked me up after she kicked me, and then Jean pulled me to safety the second time, so technically both of you did."
"And yet you feel responsible for both of us? Don't take this the wrong way, but we had just met. When did our safety become your responsibility?"
It was only with that question that Jason realized something. A truth that couldn't be disputed. He remembered that man under the rock he couldn't lift. The Female Titan slapping him into a tree. Levi's aura.
Jason was acting like the son of Jupiter. Praetor of the First Legion. A powerful demigod that can protect anyone and anything.
But that wasn't the case anymore. Here the wind didn't respond to him, his strength wasn't present, and he was powerless against any monster that would approach him. If it wasn't for Armin, Jean and Levi, he'd probably be dead by now.
He placed his right hand on his head. "I am such an idiot."
"I've been saying that whole time." Jean said smugly. Armin nudged him. "What?"
Suddenly the wooden door opened.
Levi commanded the group. "Everyone outside. Now."
Jason noticed two figures behind him. A black haired girl wearing a red scarf around her neck, and a black haired boy with intense green eyes. They looked to be the same age as Armin.
"What's happened Captain?" Armin asked.
Levi almost spit the words out. "Titans have been spotted within Wall Rose."
Jean and Armin shot up.
"Wall Rose has been breached?" Jean asked.
The group, now consisting of six people, walked across a courtyard that showed the night sky. The sun must have set during our conversation. Jason thought to himself.
"That's most likely the case." Levi answered. He stood in front of some stairs as he said the following. "We were ordered to investigate the breach. You four go downstairs and help the others get ready for departure. You, come with me." He said that last part to Jason.
The four soldiers gave their Captain a "Yes Sir!" and descended down the stairs. Armin glanced quickly at Jason, giving him a small smile, almost reassuring him that things would be okay. Jason gave a thumbs up back. He was pretty sure his face revealed his true feelings.
I'm so screwed.
