The night filled the empty sky above the singular building in the distance. Stars twinkled bright, reminding Sasha of home. Home… When was the last time she visited. She gulped, recalling the titan attack within Wall Rose. The two meter titan she fought on her own scared her to this day. But she did save that little girl. If I remember correctly, she's living with Pop's now.
"Excuse me?" A voice caught her attention.
She jumped when she saw the blonde haired boy. Seeing her unease, he took a step back, "Your arrows," he handed over her quiver, "You left them by the other supplies."
Sasha knelt her elbows backwards and felt her back. She chuckled softly and gently took her quiver from him. I was so anxious I forgot them! She was about to thank him, but the boy had already gone to help Jean and Connie with the barrels.
What's wrong with me! Sasha couldn't help feeling scared of her new team mate. Especially after what he almost did to that MP earlier today. Sasha had been hiding in the trees when they caught the two soldiers from the Military Police force. She could have sworn he was frothing at the mouth when he was beating that poor guy.
"Sasha," she jumped again at the sound of her name. When she saw the Captain had called her, she breathed a sigh of relief. Not Blondie, just the Captain.
"Douse your arrowheads in oil, we'll need to be prepared for the coming battle." She nodded and went to Connie who was currently handling the explosives. Luckily Jean and the boy were working on another barrel.
The barrel of oil was on top of a cart that the Section Commander had brought with her. Connie was filling wool bags using the faucet connected to the bottom of the barrel. Sasha climbed the cart and took off the lid. A black liquid greeted her.
"Psst." Sasha whispered. No response.
"Connie." She whispered again.
"What?" He seemed annoyed.
Sasha didn't know what to ask. So she went with the first thing on her mind, "Why are you all buddy buddy with the new guy? I thought you hated him." He gave her a look. She gave him one right back. He sighed, returning his focus to the bags of oil.
"I didn't hate him, I…" He exhaled, "I was so angry at Berthold and Reiner, and I didn't know how to deal with it." Sasha saw him tie one of the bags with a double knot, the way Commandant Sadies always instructed them to do. "I took my anger out on him cause I thought he was one of them… but when he brought back Officer Nifa's body…"
Connie stopped tying the bag. Sasha stayed silent.
"The point is, he clearly wasn't one of them. It's not fair that I keep taking my anger out on somebody that did nothing to deserve it." He finished tying the bag and began on another one, opening the faucet at the bottom of the barrel. Sasha took out some of her arrows and began dousing them in the oil. Her dirty face reflected on its surface.
"You're not scared of him?"
Connie looked up at her. "Why would I be?"
Sasha doused another set of arrows, "He almost killed that MP! And that other time, when he ran after Reiner and the others, lighting came out of him! That doesn't scare you?"
Connie continued tying his new bag, "Honestly, it's no different from being with Eren. He has titan powers and we stay close to him." Sasha, realizing he was right, pouted. She doused three more arrows.
"What?" Connie asked her. Sasha stayed silent. "Is it about that lady you met in Trost?"
Sasha snapped, "Don't talk about her! Did you tell the others about her?" She whipped her head to the others, just to make sure no one was listening.
Connie snickered, "I don't know why you're so scared of an old lady, but no, I didn't tell the others about her. Are you going to tell him about her?"
Sasha sighed. A headache was coming on. "I don't know. They seemed to be connected, but she told me not to mention her to anyone." The fact that Connie had figured her out was bad enough. She didn't want the lady to act on her threat.
Sasha felt her knapsack. She still had those weird cakes the lady made her bake as well as the strange liquid. Only half the liquid she made had been used when the boy was bleeding gold. This was all that was left. If the cretan gets injured in battle, make him consume these. And make sure no one but him eats it. You don't want your bones to turn to dust now, do you?
She shivered at the memory. The old woman in Trost was the scariest thing she had encountered in all sixteen years of her life. She had been a beauty, only slight wrinkles on her face, and brown hair covered by a green shawl. But her expression was always filled with seething anger. Like she wanted to kill everyone.
A commotion at the corner of the camp got her out of her thoughts. Jean pushed Blondie closer and closer to the barrel Connie and Sasha were currently at. Sasha was about to move away when she got a glare from Connie. She was surprised when he said, "Give him a chance."
So she did. Focusing on dousing the rest of her arrows, the two boys approached.
Jean gave the boy one final push, "Just say it already!" The boy gave Jean a wry look. Then he faced the two at the barrel. He shifted his attention toward Connie who was filling another bag with oil.
The boy's eyes darted side to side. "I'm… I'm sorry about earlier today. I wasn't all there and I shouldn't have hurt you." He then looked straight at Connie, "I hope you can forgive me."
Connie tied the bag he was filling. Everyone waited for his response. Noticing the tension, Connie laughed. "Guys, it's alright." He looked at the boy, "You shoved me against a tree, so what? We need all the help we can get on this mission. And you're pretty strong. Weird… but still strong. The interior wont see what's coming with that speed of yours." He offered a hand, "Lets save Eren and Historia."
The boy looked at the hand. Then to Connie. He slapped it back with a huge grin on his face. "Let's save your friends." Sasha, not realizing she was holding in her breath, let it go. Jean slapped the boy on the back, "See! What did I tell you?"
The boy shrugged, "I guess so. But there's still someone I need to apologize to."
"You mean Marlo?" Jean asked.
"Is that his name?" Blondie put a hand on his forehead, "If only I saw his face before I… I wouldn't have done what I did."
"Weirdly enough, he wasn't mad you beat him up." Jean said.
The boy had wide eyes. Connie laughed in disbelief, "He wasn't?"
Jean put his hands on his waist, "Yeah, he was more worried about you then anything else." He shook his head, "Honesty to the point of stupidity."
Sasha recalled the interaction at the river. That MP had said something about Blondie saving a lot of people.
That boy has a tendency to get himself killed saving others. The old woman's venomous voice entered Sasha's head. I can't have that idiot dying during my test.
"Jason!" Sasha interrupted the conversation. All three looked at her. Putting her arrows in her quiver, she hopped down the cart. She approached the trio, "There's something I need to tell you."
Connie gave her a questioning look, "Sasha, are you sure?"
She gave him a determined look. From what she could surmise, Jason wasn't a bad person. Just someone who's been through a lot. Just like her. "I'm sure."
"What do you need to tell me?" Jason asked her.
"About an old lady I met in Trost."
