CHAPTER 207
Seth and Kyra were sprawling over the top of the fence and beginning to climb down the other side. Dianna had yet to make her way over and was just out of reach of the allosaur as it slammed into the cables below her. The whole fence shuddered as the predator clawed its way after her. It could not climb the fence, but it reared up and raked its fore talons down the cables and snapped at Dr. Johnson's heels. She maintained her grip and kept climbing as the allosaurus shook the wires below her. The beast began to kick, pull, and tear at the fence. Dianna heard sounds like a giant guitar was getting torn apart below her feet.
Seth and Kyra clung to the other side of the cables as they shook and wobbled. They had scaled down to where Dianna was still on the other side, but they both had understandable reservations about descending any further.
Seth looked at his mom through the rattling wires with fear across his face. "What do we do?"
Dianna looked down. The allosaurus had torn a hole in the fence. Cables were dangling and twisted. The carnivore had several strands of wire looped through its claws and draped between its teeth. It chomped and pulled and tugged with an angry look in its eye. The allosaurus had its body partially wedged through the hole. It lay over the concrete barrier at the base with its head turned upward to look at Seth and Kyra. With the beast having one foot on either side of the fence it was at a good vantage point to go after anyone.
Dianna looked up past the fence and out toward the airstrip. She saw it, the smooth paved runway. Her eyes followed up to the far end where there was a small twin prop with its engines humming. The door to the plane was shut. There was no one standing around. It looked like it was ready to go.
Below Dr. Johnson the allosaurus was clawing the cables and growling. Through the noise she heard a voice.
"Mom?"
She turned to Seth, reached through the fence and took his hand. She looked at him and Kyra and said, "when she's distracted you run for that plane."
"Mom, what?"
Dianna squeezed Seth's palm tight and let go. She looked down at the allosaurus and yelled, "hey, you!"
The allosaur growled at her. Dianna began to descend the fence, putting herself almost in reach of the carnivore. While she did, she scaled horizontally across the cables, moving away from Seth and Kyra. The allosaurus wriggled its body backwards through the fence and began to trail after Dr. Johnson.
"Mom!" Seth reached after her.
"Seth, no." Kyra grabbed his hand. "She knows what she's doing. We have to get to that plane."
