Youko's Thoughts: ^That human is something else. ^

Kurama speaking to Youko in his head/his own thoughts: *Please Youko, just stop. *

Inner thoughts of other characters: 'What the hell is going on?'

A Few Inventions from the Spirit Lab! (Really my creations…-cue evil laugh-)

Articulation gum:The user gains the ability to speak any language temporally if it is carved into the gum itself and spelled properly. This gum requires a bit of spirit energy. Over time it is possible to gain the ability semi-permanently. The downside is a horrible lingering bitter taste and must be swallowed at exactly the right time otherwise one will speak the language backward. (The same thing will happen if it is spelled incorrectly)

Sprit Box Tracer:A special device that can locate any soul so long as a fragment of the soul itself is available, DNA also counts as a fragment. Able to produce images of a soul's shell. (current or final appearance, unless in limbo)

Chapter 8: The Truth and the Hasty Search!

(DAY ONE)

~Flash-back~ Lunchtime. 12:10 pm

Kurama's POV:

Call from Koenma

Using a video chat app on a spirit phone, the face of toddler Koenma lit up the screen. Oddly, the connection is clear, and with firmness his voice rang through.

"Kurama, I have some more news to inform you about."

"But first, I should tell you about my findings…." I hastily state in insistence to the Young king of the Spirit World. Without missing another beat, I tell Koenma about the incident with the girl Aisha…

"Kurama, as you already know about our desperation to locate that partial demon girl, she is also being hunted down by numerous demons. One of them is most likely a demon shapeshifter. At this very moment, that demon might be in the school, posing as a student."

"How would that explain the demonic aura I felt from her earlier?" I inquired, none of this is adding up.

"As you may recall, some shift shapers can alter any person, or other demon's auras, and take their form."

"Do you think I was deceived…?"

"From what her energy reads, and from what you just told me, that girl is indeed human."

"My question is how would she know about the others, including my demon name and background?"

"To be quite honest, I don't know; it can be very possible she is the girl we are searching for…"

"If she is fully human, how would she be the one we are looking for? Not to mention I scared her nearly to death, Koenma…"

The young king glances down at some sort of document and states; "To answer your question according to this, the female isn't part demon. Someone has indeed tampered with these records."

"It would have been helpful if you stated this information, beforehand…" I sighed, now I have created an enormous mess, and it will only lead to more trouble.

"Oh! You have about two weeks before the next full moon appears this month; January 17 is not the date we should be worried about. Remember the seal I told you about? Well, it will break if anything tampers with her soul… As of yet I have no clue who is behind the chaos created from the undead demons, but I have an idea as to why these portals keep popping up." Koenma paused, his minuscule hand brushed through his brunette bangs out of frustration.

"Do you recall the work the ogres have been doing for the last six months?"

"Obviously, sir, Youko has been quite the pest." I could not help but grit my teeth in anger.

He chuckled nervously, probably sensing my frustration. "They've actually been slaving for nearly two years in perfecting stable enough portals to different locations and dimensions, as I'm sure you weren't aware of."

I'm taken by surprise that they have been operational for that long amount of time.

"For what purpose would you need portals for?" I inquired him. "And why keep this project secret?"

"Simple Kurama, in creating these portals they produce an alternative power source. Something like this shouldn't be public information anyway."

Koenma paused for a moment and continued; "As for a purpose, there are multiple uses. For one it can be used to restore power to Spirit world if the need ever arises. As you already know, my pacifier has been collecting my spirit energy and was depleted recently. I would like to have reserves to be on the safe side. This additional energy can power devices that will get me through the mountains of paperwork I am always drowning in…and, of course, replenish the tools you guys use." A cheeky grin expresses itself on the lord's face.

^Does he not have the assistance of the ogres? Are they not enough to complete his tasks? Bumbling fool, playing with devices will only reap chaos. ^ Youko grumbled.

Before I could question Koenma further, he then stated; "Normally I would be too preoccupied with my own duties, and discovering additional power has its merit, but just the very idea of there being other worlds was, -is astounding." He paused, and his eyes twinkled. "However, my innocent curiosity gradually turned into paranoia, but for good reason; can you really blame me, considering the favorable outcomes?"

"No, I don't find you at fault, I might have even reacted the same way Koenma, but what has your actions led to this time?" I reason I am going to be even further irritated.

Koenma nervously utters, "To be fair, my actions were reasonable…but the science/research department's original blueprints of the portal's creation process were somehow stolen a month ago; even with taking extreme precautions." Koenma sighs and added, "I tried sufficiently to track down what caused such a breach, but it seems my efforts are in vain. Whoever broke in this time clearly knew what they were doing. Though, the strange thing is they only stole those specific blueprints."

"Not anything else? Someone's goal was straight-forward. How strange, considering the vast number of devices that could have been at their disposal." I commented, trying to piece together who could have done this.

"We now know why they stole them in the first place. Normally, portals and holes opening at random to different places would happen once in a millennia as I said earlier but I believe the enemy stole those blueprints in order to cover up their true intentions, not to mention adding in some extra diversions...Father will not only kill me if he finds out about those blue-prints and the portals, but he'll also dethrone me!" The small ruler exclaimed, "And I still don't know what to do!"

"So, your father only knows about the demon girl and the undead soldiers? Wouldn't it be better to come clean about the portal blueprints?" I asked.

"My father is the stubborn type who refuses to listen to proper reason. Don't you recall how he tampered with the demon world? I do not think I can trust him in knowing the full truth Kurama!" Koenma's face presented pure panic.

"Are you certain the portals opening up are because of your stolen blueprints? Or is it just contributing to a natural occurrence?

"I think my blueprints are a factor, portals are opening too rapidly to keep up with. They have started to spill over into the other world!"

"And we only thought the undead demons were troublesome enough beforehand…Has there been any changes?" I try to get the prince to calm down.

"At present, their numbers are remaining steady…but who's to say how long that will be the case? Kurama… although father has stepped down, his power is not something to trifle with. Who knows how he's going to take this, world war three might break out in the human realm, perhaps even in both worlds!"

*He did mention a while back his father's temper was a horrid creature…*

"Koenma sir, please you have to remain calm, panic is logic's pray." I pleaded with him, and he takes a deep breath. "Now, what exactly do you have at your disposal? How do you power new portals? Do you use your spirit energy?"

"Members of the SDF, alongside a vast amount of demons and ogres, have perished but they have been able to keep the undead at bay. The grim reapers are barely able to patch up the portals, and I worry they will end up overwhelmed."

"That is unfortunate to hear, their deaths are not in vain. Another concern I have is how do the thieves manage to create their own alternative power?"

"I'm afraid to even think about that. It drains me greatly, even as the son of King Yama-but as of right now, we have no answer."

The child king went on to state that using a vast amount of his spiritual energy and his Spirit Shield, he can create a portal to any location, but it requires some time to become even semi-stable.

"This process uses a good amount of my spirit energy, so our portals are very limited." He says in a defeated tone. "Though, some new power trickles out of these portals when they are produced. Collecting their energy hasn't been perfected yet."

Apparently, he lucked out when he opened a portal for Botan and I- considering it was able to remain stable enough.

^It seems he has lost the ability to create proper portals, how foolish was it to only have one copy of those blueprints? ^

"Without guidance from the original blueprints my portals are still a hit or miss when it comes to being stable. This alone will cause problems getting everyone else to assist you, but I will find a way to safely reunite Team Urameshi." Koenma grins. "You all seem to find a will and a way, even if things look grim."

"That is true, especially concerning our stubborn streaks." I grin as well, thinking of my friends.

"Before I forget, I did some more digging around and found more documents that state this one human is supposed to be carrying a fragment of an ancient female demon's soul. Apparently, there were a few others who held fragments, but sadly they have already passed on. Two of them I was unable to locate, so I assume they're in the state of Limbo. The Spirit Box Tracer was able to produce an image of this human's current vessel. Strange, isn't it?" He smiled a little again. "I hope you can see it; sorry it's a bit blurry.

My eyes widen a bit, but I'm not as surprised as I thought I would be. Tan skin, piercing coffee-colored eyes, waves of onyx, and dark caramel tinted hair.

*Would the fact that she's a carrier of an ancient demon soul portion explain her strange familiarity to me? *

"Have you already met this girl?" Koenma asked, who I'm predicting understands what my expression meant.

"Yes, I have, it is no wonder her aura felt bizarre to me, she's the girl I mistook for an enemy demon.

^Stupid Binky fool, he should realize this is his fault. Considering we frightened this human halfway to death. ^ Youko growled.

*Part of it, is. However, the rest of this fault belongs to us, Youko. * I stated evenly.

"Well, at least you were able to locate her. There's also a possibility that the demons after her are quite ancient." Koenma added. "Or they're just extremely clever."

"Oh?" I couldn't help but be curious. "We will find out soon enough if that's truly the case."

"Please continue to watch over her, it's only a matter of time before you'll confront our enemy."

"I will do my best, Koenma sir."

"I hope you didn't go overboard when you confronted her. Though, knowing how you are…try not to scare her again!" Koenma snickered, while I frowned at him, disapprovingly. I glared at the young ruler and he immediately silenced his laughter.

^His foolish remarks only make me want to hurt him more. ^

*He doesn't mean to do it…besides he does mean well, Youko…Though even I grow weary of this idiocy. *

Koenma apprehensively smiles, "If you need anything Botan can always assist you, although she has been preoccupied with patching up portals in that world."

"Ah, I was wondering where she went off to. Very well then. Sir, is there anything else you need to inform me about?"

"No, that's all Kurama. Good luck to you. I'll call you later on to check your progress and to keep you posted. Bye."

*BEEP* This connection has been terminated. Thank you for calling Spirit world; have a nice day.

After stating a quick farewell Koenma hung up and I exited the JROTC closet I was in. A few people spotted me, and gave me unusual glances, and I couldn't help in feeling utterly awkward.

"I should be more careful when I pick somewhere to speak privately…" I mumbled to myself, as I headed out to locate Miss Aisha and to grab lunch.

End flashback.

Kurama's POV:

~Flash-back~ Period Five 12:55 pm

5th period was on the hectic side, most of the students were disruptive and dared to pester me with their ridiculous questions of absurd topics. I kept my usual composure; these fools don't know any better.

^Remind me to plant a Death Tree perhaps these humans will learn to watch their sharp tongues. ^

*I think not, Youko, we would not gain anything of benefit, besides, I don't wish to spend time in Spirit World Prison. *

^I was only joking little Shuichi. ^

*Somehow, I really doubt that. *

Strangely, the first question did make me crack a mental smile.

"Hey Cutie! Boxers, briefs, or... are you going commando?" The Hispanic female seated next to Aisha giggled.

Astonishment graced Aisha's facial expression and her pencil clattered to the floor and rolled underneath my desk.

"I believe that is personal information that I cannot give to you." I stated, holding back a slight smile.

Youko was sniggering so hard, that I could imagine him rolling on the floor losing his typical self-control. Aisha's giggling struck a chord within my thoughts and I pondered momentarily if she desired the real answer. I mistakenly grinned outwardly as I carefully handed her pencil back.

*Youko, please stop planting perverted ideas in my mind. *

She gawked at me for a few seconds, perhaps her mind was reeling in confusion, but a tint of pink brushed her cheeks and she hurriedly glanced away.

*I still wonder how she knows about not only my demon name, but everyone else's background., but from what I know now and can sense, she isn't a demon... however, her aura has a strange familiarity to it...*

Towards the end of the class period, a resilient and malevolent amount of demonic energy obscured the silly atmosphere.

^ Finally the real demon is making its presence known. ^

*Appears so, and Koenma did confirm that Miss Aisha is the female we are in search of. *

ˏ𓏧𓏲𓏲𓏲𓋒𓏲𓏲𓏲𓏲𓏧ˎ1:54 pm

*Now I must warn her and stop her from going out on her own. * I thought as the classroom emptied swiftly.

As all the rowdy students exited, some accidentally shoved Aisha, causing her to drop her binder and papers, which gave us a moment of privacy, since the teacher also scurried out. Putting out the friendliest voice I could muster up, I asked if she needed help, and she cheerfully replied without so much a glance in my direction.

*Not very perceptive when it comes to danger, is she? * I can't help but shake my head at this clueless girl.

^How cute, do let me speak to her. ^

*No, now is not the time for you to do so Youko. Let me handle this. *

Kneeling in front of a desk I began to collect her things; I could only hope she wouldn't flee again, frightening her would lead to the worst of outcomes.

A smile paraded itself across her face and animatedly she uttered; "Oh hey thanks Kurama."

*And she does it again...*

Realization and the depth of her blunder makes itself apparent on her face, and before she can sprint, impulse dominates my mind and I seized her arm.

*She can't go out there now, that demon just might be lurking, waiting for her. *

"Wait-" A burning wave of tingling punches through me again, but this time an image of Youko and a woman with pink eyes flashes through my head. The pink hue wasn't as light as Botan's but was a much darker shade, almost red. It occurred so rapidly; I didn't know what to make of it. I wasn't sure how long it took me to snap out of the trance, but I shortly raced down the stairs, entering a vacant hallway.

^Where did she go? ^

I deliberated to myself if the bell had rung already, she might be in class, safe.

*I hope she is-*

I froze, a sharp blade was pressed into my neck and an atrocious aura flickered behind me. Whoever this person is I could tell immediately this individual was trying to mask their demonic energy.

*Damn, one negative move-*

"If you don't wanna see all these annoying humans die an excruciatin' death, you should come with me." His voice was somewhat deep, and malicious, and seemed as if he was attempting not to chuckle.

Before I could contemplate my next move, he reacted by forcing a rag over my mouth. Somehow it forced me to suck in oxygen, but as hastily as I could, I jumped away from him, gaining a small gash on my neck in the process. As I applied pressure to the wound, blood oozed between my fingertips.

I faced my attacker, preparing myself to shut away all my emotions. Around five foot seven, he was garbed in a black-cloaked hood, his entire face hidden. Deciding a rose whip would do me good, my fingers twitched, but I soon realized something; I couldn't move my body.

"Looks like da great Youko Kurama ain't so grand after all." The hooded male cackled. "Boss and big brother will be pleased!"

*Whatever he used has also blocked my spirit energy…*

I began to grow extremely dizzy and fell to my knees. As I weakly glanced up, he leisurely removes his cloak and resembled me.

"D-damn you…" I uttered, but it barely emanated from my lips. My body soon started to tingle, and stabs of pain shot through me.

*Foolish of me to fall to such a tactic...*

"I've found the human girl; master can harness the power to destroy both worlds now." The clone-like me chortled. "Looks like you lose, weak fox demon!"

"No…" I whisper, and descent into an obscure void, sulking in my loss.

End Flash-back.

Present time 3:15pm

Kurama's POV:

The last thing I recall is...? I'm not quite sure... My mind is in a state of fog and confusion. As I open my eyes, a minuscule sliver of sunlight presents the surroundings of a crammed utility closet. My hands and feet are bound tightly with wire, and not to mention I've been gagged. Lovely.

10 minutes later…ˏˋ‿̩͙‿̩̩̥͙̽‿̩͙ ‿̩̥̩‿̩̩̥͙̽‿̩͙ˊˎ

"Blast that shapeshifting demon, he must have kidnapped her by now…" I grumble, as my mind clears up and recollection occurs.

*At least this enemy was imprudent enough to allow me to live, and that will be his ultimate mistake. *

^Shuichi...I believe I have encountered an analogous demon like him beforehand... ^

*Now you decide to say something. You shut off right when I needed your assistance, why is that? *

^Whatever substance was used seems to have blocked our connection, however, the effects have now appeared to have weakened. We should be thankful, but as of now our main concern is, which direction that abomination went. ^

*At least we can recognize her scent…I only hope we can get to her in time…*

I leap, ensuing Aisha's scent that leads to the football field, as I gait a blur of pink and black on the fake grass catches my eye, and I gather up her belongings. Her cellphone's rose bell charm dangles by a few strings and that is when the screen's background lights up, it's a picture of me.

"What the…?" I stutter absolutely stunned.

"How did she get a picture of me in the first place?" In the photo, I'm dressed in a black tux, closing my eyes and holding up a red rose to my lips.

^An interesting spectacle…^ Youko comments.

*Perhaps, she is an obsessive fangirl…*

I shrug the thought away and verge off, her scent rapidly mingles with the odor of blood and salty tears.

*I must find her quickly…*

˚*3:35 pm

Five minutes later I find myself trailing through a small forest area within the outskirts of the city.

*Youko, recall any of the shift shaper's weaknesses? *

^Do you honestly think I'd recall every detail about some unworthy demon I've fought? ^

*... No...but he isn't so unworthy now, is he? *

Youko simply scuffs but doesn't voice against me.

*So, you don't know... whoever he is, he obviously holds resentment towards me. *

^Though, he did declare something about a master, I believe he is more of a pawn. ^

* Pawn or not he nearly got the best of me and must be eliminated swiftly. *

Suddenly Aisha's scent starts gradually dwindling, so I hasten my pace, praying I don't lose it.

To be continued...

My notes:

This chapter has gone from 22 pages, to 11 pages! It was a headache editing. -.-
