Chapter 1 (August 2018)

Rory POV

"Emma! Come on! Your dad's gonna be here any minute." I yelled up the stairs. She knew that Logan was here at the same time every Friday. I headed towards the kitchen to get a cup of coffee when I heard the doorbell. I detoured and went to answer the door. I opened the front door to see Logan standing there. "Hey. Come in." I said.

Logan walked in and I closed the door behind him. He followed me to the kitchen. "So, I need to talk to you." He said.

"Sure. Coffee?" I asked and he nodded. I poured both of us a cup of coffee and we sat at the kitchen table. "What's going on?" I asked.

He ran a hand over his face. "I have to go to London." Logan said.

"What?" I asked shocked. I mean, sure Logan had traveled some since Emma had been born but it usually wasn't often.

He nodded. "Yeah. My European CEO tried to handle it but there's something going on and I'm needed." He said.

I nodded. "Sure. How long will you be gone?" I asked him.

"Hopefully, just a couple of days. I'm planning to spend most of my time in the office while I'm there so that I don't have to be there long." He said.

I nodded. "When do you leave?" I asked, knowing that we'd have to tell Emma.

"Wednesday." Logan said. "I was hoping that you'd let Emma stay with me till I leave?" He asked looking down at his coffee cup.

"You'll make sure she gets to school on time?" I asked him. He nodded. "You can ask her." I told him.

"Thanks. I know it's not ideal but I appreciate it." Logan said.

I shrugged. "It's not great, but Logan, you gave me notice about the travel. I can't fault you for wanting to spend time with our daughter because you're gonna be gone. You've always made an effort to put Emma first." I told him and it was the truth.

"Thanks."

Logan and I sat there in silence for a few minutes before Emma came bounding down the steps. "Hey Dad." She said, hugging him.

"Hey pumpkin. So, we gotta talk to you. Come sit." Logan said.

Emma walked over to the fridge and grabbed a Coke before joining us at the table. "What's going on?" Emma asked.

"So, I have to go to London for a few days." Logan told her.

"Oh. Okay." Emma said, dejectedly. "How long will you be gone? When do you leave?"

Logan explained that he'd only be gone for a few days and that he was leaving Wednesday morning. "I was hoping that you'd wanna come stay with me until I left." He said.

She smiled at him. "Really?" She asked.

He nodded. "Yep. I already cleared it with your mom." He said. She looked over at me and I nodded.

"And school?" Emma asked.

They both looked over at me. "Dad will drop you off at school on his way to work. After school, you'll come to my classroom and then I'll drop you off either at his office or his house." I said.

Logan looked back over at Emma. "Sound good?" He asked.

"Yeah." Emma said.

"Now go add school clothes to your bag so that you and Dad can get going." I told her. She ran out of the kitchen and back up the stairs.

"Any big plans for the weekend?" Logan asked me.

I shook my head. "Nope. Mom and Luke are taking the boys…somewhere. I don't know. Lane's got a gig in Hartford, so I might go to that. Other than that, I might just stay home. Grade papers." I said.

Logan nodded. "Honor and Josh are having a cook-out Sunday. You could come?" He said.

"Maybe…" I said.

It didn't take long before Emma came bounding back down the stairs. "Okay, I'm ready." Emma said. "Everything okay?" She asked.

"Yeah. Let's go kiddo." Logan said. And they left.

About an hour after Logan and Emma had left, I was laying on the couch when my phone rang. I grabbed it off the coffee table and answered it. "Hello?" I said.

"Why did I think that it would be a good idea for me to go camping with the boys? I should have just stayed home with you and Emma. We could have had a girls weekend." Mom said.

I rolled my eyes. "Emma is with Logan this weekend." I told her.

"Oh. Well what are you gonna do?" She asked me.

"Oh well, I thought that I'd clean around the house some. Finish grading some papers. Logan invited me to Honor's BBQ on Sunday." I told her.

"That was nice of them." Mom said. "So Emma will be home Sunday night?"

I sighed. "No. She's staying with Logan for a few days. He has to go to London for a few days so he asked if he could have a couple extra days." I told her.

"Well, it was nice that you allowed it." Mom said. I rolled my eyes. It wasn't exactly a secret that she didn't like the custody arrangement that Logan and I had.

"We asked Emma what she wanted to do." I told her.

"Oh. Well do you think that was wise?" Mom asked me.

There was a knock at the front door. "Mom, I gotta go. There's someone at the door." I said and hung up. I put my phone back on the coffee table and made my way to the front door. When I opened the front door, I was surprised to see Honor standing there. "Hey." I said.

"Hey, can we talk?" She asked me.

I nodded. "Sure come on in." I said. She walked in and I closed the door behind her. "Coffee?" I asked.

"This is probably more of a wine conversation." She said. I nodded. I headed into the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of wine and two glasses and headed back to the living room. Honor was sitting on one end of the couch. I sat on the other end and poured each of us a glass of wine. I handed a glass to her before I took a drink of my own.

I turned to face her. "Now do you want to tell me what's going on?" I asked her.

"Rory, what happened ten years ago?" Honor asked me. "You and Logan were so in love."

I sighed. "Honor…." I pleaded.

"He won't tell me anything other than the fact that he proposed and you said no." Honor said.

"Technically I said, not yet." I said, taking a drink of my wine.

"Please. I need to know what happened." Honor said.

"And it stays between us?" I asked. She nodded. "Okay."
