The Journey Begin

Walking through the doors leading to Professor Oaks lab 16 year old Slate orphan of Pallet Town comes face to face with an arrogant brown haired boy wearing a long sleeved blue shirt. On his right wrist was a black Xtransceiver.

This contrasted with Slate's black faux-hawk like style with a medium tan. With a swimmers build he was covered up with a blue hooded vest over a black shirt, grey pants, and dark blue sneakers. On his left wrist was a blue and black Pokégear(1).

In an admittedly skillful display of ability Gary tossed a shrunken pokeball in his hand in one fluid motion grew it as it spun on his finger.

"It's about time you showed up you loser." commented the grandson of Professor Oak, Gary.

Slate rolled his eyes in annoyance. "Hello Professor Oak, Gary got your first pokemon already?" he asked noticing one of the pokemons on the table was missing. "Of course he'd get first pick of group. Nepotism's a bitch, probably got a ton of TM already." Being a famous Professor's grandson was bound to give him an edge.

Cocky smirk covered the younger Oaks face. "Sure did, got the pick of the litter to. Figured I'd stick around, you know show you scrubs what a real trainer looks like."

Shrugging his shoulders Slate walked past him. "Thought you stayed to showoff to your boyfriend, guess your hoping for a quickie with Ash before you left." he taunted. (It was Super Effective)

Professor Oak placed his balled fist over his mouth stifling a laugh.

A vein throbbed on Gary's forehead as he glared at the other trainer. "Like I'd ever date that idiot!" Gary shouted face red with anger. "AND I'M NOT GAY!" he quickly added before storming out.

Getting his laughter under control Professor Oak raises his hand in greeting. "Hello Slate sorry about that but you know how Gary is talented youth that loves to brag."

Slate simply shrugged. He never really liked Ash or Gary that much sure they hung out when they were kids but once they started their "rivalry" they kinda ignored everyone and everything else around them.

The older man's mood quickly brightened once he looked to the youth before him. "So Slate have you decided which pokemon you'd like to begin your journey."

"Heck yeah I picked my pokemon!" Slate shouted excitedly after all he'd actually done some research on all the gym leaders. Walking up to the pokeball with the leaf symbol on it he picked it up. After all grass types were resistant against to half of the gyms in Kanto not to mention Bulbasaur was awesome with guaranteed status effect moves.

"I pick Bulbasaur." Slate said with conviction.

The Pokemon Professor smiled as he held out a red device and five shrunken pokeballs. "A wise choice. Here is your pokedex and five pokeballs to start you off."

Pocketing the items Slate turns to the older man.

"So who do you think will get the Charmander?"

Rubbing his chin in thought Oak thought for only a second. "I believe it will be Ash, no one is more excited about being a trainer more then him."

"Tauros shit! That guy as the attention span of a slowpoke, he'll probably sleep to the last minute. Scarlet may be more this for the glamour and romance of traveling but at least she always made it on time to class." Slate quickly defended.

"Oh contraire that desire to best Gary will push to hits he's never seen that includes getting here first."

The two look locked eyes neight giving an inch in there belief.

"3000 Pokedollars! If Scarlet gets here first you send it to me. And vice versa if it's Ash." Slate challenged hand strentched out to seal the deal.

The Professor was shocked at this. "3000 Pokedollars! That's all the money you'll start out on your journey, if you lose you have nothing but you wits to survive until you can beat someone in a battle!"

Slate raised a brow at that "How's it any different from my usual life." he said refuring to his orphan status forcing him to know how to thrive and prosper in even the bleakest of situations.

Oak grasped his hand not seeing any real harm after all he can just give Slate a loan until he won a few battles. "Alright deal."

With that Slate walked to the door leading to the beginning of his pokemon journey.

Slate stood on top of a hill overlooking Pallet Town his home for the last 16 years. Rather then wait to actually see who'd make it first he decided to get started only stopping by Daisy's to get one of the maps of Kanto that only the Oak family seemed to have.

By his side was Bulbasaur who looked to his trainer ready for there first adventure.

"Alright buddy it's time to start our journey." Slate said eyes closed not noticing his starter had wandered off. "We should look into getting another pokemon to join the team, probably a water type since we're fighting a rock gym first. Though a Mankey or Sandshrew could also..."

"SAUR! SAUR!" a call far away from him drew his attention to his Bulbsaur only he wasn't alone. By his side near a large stream that spanned the route was a blue, spherical tadpole. It has large eyes and pink lips there was a black and white swirl on its abdomen.

"A Poliwag?" Slate watched as the water type stopped just short of the trainer. "Arceus you work fast." he said Bulbasaur preened at the praise.

Squating down to it's level Slate pulled out a pokemon. "Hey Poliwag I'm Slate and this is my partner Bulbasaur I'm a new trainer and I want to see if you'd like to be my Pokemon?"

Poliwag's shifted to that of a deterimed gaze jumping back a few feet.

"Alright Bulbasaur lets do this, first battle of our journey!" he pointed to the poliwag.

Bulbasaur jumped into the scene the air was tense as the two pokemon glaring at each other.

"Bulbasaur use Tackle!" hearing the order the grass type rushed in. Poliwag jumped back releasing a massive barrage of bubbles blinding it's opponet.

Both trainer's and pokemon's eyes widened at the defensive maneuver. Bulbasaur came to a halt as he ran into the wall of bubbles, looking around the grass type could do nothing as a tail-fin shot out through the bubbles striking it across the face.

Pound

"Bulbasaur get out of there!" Slate ordered.

"THWAP!"

"THWAP!"

"THWAP!"

The order went unanswered everytime Bulbasaur tried to escape the bubbles Poliwag would appear with another strike to the face.

Slate smirked as an idea formed. "Bulbasaur use Vinewhip on the ground."
Hearing the command Bulbasaur slammed it's wines onto the ground propelling him into the air.

"Now Vinewhip with a spin." As the grass type descended back to the bubbly veil he got into a spin as his vines extended smacking through the bubbles and the water type hiding within it.

"Bulbasaur Leech Seed!"

A seed sprouts from Bulbasaur's bulb, which shoots out to the Tadpole. When it hit, it was wrapped in thin vines and leaves that restrain it. The vines and leaves then glow red and suck energy from the water type.

Enlarging a pokeball Slate got ready. "Bulbasaur Vinewhip into Tackle." Charging forward Bulbasaur rushed forward before slamming his vines into the ground propelling himself with a tackle into the water type sending it soaring through the air through a tree.

"Pokeball Go!" Slate's pokeball soared through the air before smacking into the Poliwag fadded into red energy before being sucked inside.

The ball closed with a click, and then glowed bright red at the center and shook on the ground. Once, twice, and three times, and then it let loose a ping. (2)

Slate stared at the pokeball on the ground in shock, he did it caught his first pokemon.

Bulbasaur was shocked when his trainer picked him up spinning him around as he grinned.

"Yes we did it Bulbasaur! We're on our way to the top!"

Beep

Slate froze mid-celebration as his pokedex went off opening it he see all of his information, he smirked briefly as he saw the pokemon owned going from one to two. That smirk grew at his bank account.

6000 pokedollars things were looking up.

Chapter End Author's Note

(1) Wanted to truly display his financial disadvantage to his peers. I think the Xtransceiver can do everything maps, phone, internet, etc. Where as Slate has the basic pokegear a phone and map.

(2) To be fair type advantages are actually important plus you've seen the series wild pokemon are usually at a disadvantage.
