Chapter 3

Thank you to Trini12180, Notenoughlove, and Leeleelayla5 for your reviews.

In OG GH, Sarah Webber didn't arrive in Port Charles until June 1997, and Elizabeth arrived in August 1997. In the previous chapter, Sarah and Elizabeth arrived with their father, Jeff, in July 1996, before Steve Hardy died.

Summary

Once Carly accepted Jason's choice of Robin over her, Jason and Carly remained friends. He helped and listened to her when she moved in with Tony Jones. Jason let Carly vent. Bobbie left Tony when she caught them in bed together, and she married Stefan Cassidine. Luke discovered Carly's true identity and threatened her away from his sister.

Jason

Luke's Club

1/1/1997 12:05 am.

Jason hangs up after wishing Robin a Happy New Year.

AJ slaps Jason's back, surprising him. "Happy New Year. Was that Robin?"

Jason laughs, "Yes. How are you, AJ? What brings you to Luke's?"

Sonny has issues with the Quartermaines. He can't hear what AJ is saying to his brother, but Sonny asks his father, "Mike, why can't they back off, Jason? Robin is in New Haven, so Jason doesn't need to try with the Quartermaines."

His father replies, "Michael, Jason is smiling, almost laughing. AJ doesn't appear to be bothering him."

"Mike, you may be a two-bit grifter, but at least you aren't a Quartermaine."

"You don't like them because of ELQ and how Edward treats you during board meetings. It was Jason who got you that stock. You don't like AJ because of how he reacted when he found out about Stone and being HIV. Let it go, Michael. AJ was ignorant, and once he was informed, he apologized to Stone and Robin. They forgave him before Stone's death."

"No, I think they don't respect Jason."

"Isn't that Jaason's decision to make?"

Sonny groans, "You are right. Jason can always tell them to go to hell later."

AJ asks Jason to come with him to see the family for New Year's. Jason sighs, "AJ, we discussed this. I can't be there for the Quartermaines whenever they call."

AJ holds his hands up in defeat. "Okay, you are right. They don't talk about shit like this when you are over, but do you know what is happening with Mom and GH? She's being sued for sexual harassment over an affair with this doctor at GH. His name is Pierce Dorman. I think there's going to be a trial. That is why I want you to visit, but I agree, it's not your problem."

"AJ, I'm sorry. Tell Monica I said I'm sorry."

AJ leaves, "Happy New Year, little brother."

The Quartermaines and Jason

Monica gives Emily a locket with a picture of Emily and her birth mother. The lawsuit against Monica continues. Dr. Dorman approaches Emily, but Alexis Davis intervenes. Alexis is part Cassidine and Nikolas Cassidine's Aunt. Alan starts taking pain pills from his recent hand surgery. Jason and Sony investigate who could have had the motive to get someone to hotshot Sonny with heroin last year. Secrets are exposed during the trial, causing repercussions for the family.

1/3/1997

Elizabeth walks toward the Webber home after visiting her Gram. She lights a cigarette and inhales. She started smoking when her mom left, and Sarah has been ragging on her to quit. It wasn't until Lucky criticized her that she decided to stop. She's hoping he'll notice. Lucky still overlooks her and is interested in her sister. Lucky catches up with her. "Why are you still sucking on those Cancer sticks?"

Elizabeth snuffs out her cigarette. "I'm quitting. I'm down to two a day. This is my last pack."

"Have you seen Sarah?"

"Sorry, Lucky. It's not my day to watch her. I think she's at GH volunteering at the daycare. Dad thinks I should try something after school. Does your Aunt Ruby need help at Kelly's?"

"I think she's hiring a waitress. Fill out an application, and I'll put in a good word."

"Thanks. Have you seen Emily recently? She skipped out on the last period. I saw her leave with Matt Reynolds."

"Yeah, I don't like him. There's something about him that rubs me the wrong way."

They arrive at Elizabeth's house, and Emily sits on the doorstep. Elizabeth says, "Em, Lucky, and I were talking about you. You left school early. Are you okay?"

Emily cries, "Today would have been my mom's 50th birthday had she lived. Lucky you remember my mom?"

Lucky holds his oldest friend when he arrived in Port Charles nearly four years ago. "I remember your mom, Paige. I liked her."

Elizabeth asks, "Em, is there something else going on? You seem distracted."

"Can I stay with you for a while? I'm not ready to go home."

"You can stay with me, and when my dad and Sarah return from GH, he can give you a ride home. You should call the Quartermaines and tell them you are with me."

Lucky says, "Umm, are you sure you are okay? Elizabeth said you left with Matt. He's bad news. That was hours ago. I could stay until Sarah gets home."

Elizabeth thinks, "Sarah again. Why do I bother?" She says, "Lucky, I'll stay with Emily. I'll let Sarah know you came to drool over her." Lucky scoffs and leaves.

Emily sneers, "I'm a few hours late. As if he never fucked up. It was before you arrived in Port Charles. He got into deep gambling debt with Frank Smith, the mob guy, before Sonny Corothions took over."

"Em, I don't know much about Matt, but Lucky seems genuinely concerned. You know you can tell me anything, and I won't judge."

"Thanks, Liz. I'm fine. Thanks for being a good friend."

Elizabeth writes in her journal. "I don't know why I bother with Lucky. He likes Sarah. Sarah likes Nikolas, and I think Emily does too. She says Matt is only a friend, but she hangs out with him more than she does with Lucky or me. I hope to work at Kelly's Diner. Lucky is there a lot to see his Aunt Ruby. Today is my last cigarette. Yea!"

Summary

1/18/1997

Jason's one-year birthday. It's the day Jason woke up from his accident and only acknowledges it as his birthday, not the one he was born on. Robin surprises Jason at Luke's, and Sonny joins the celebration.

February 1997

News about the trial rocks the family. Ned is forced to reveal he slept with Monica before moving to Port Charles. Neither knew they were related by marriage as Ned was calling himself Ward at the spa Monica visited in 1988. Alan continues to abuse his pain pills, and AJ turns to alcohol to dull the pain. Emily gets stoned with Matt.

March 1997

Harry Silver, a former employee of Sonny, is secretly working with Hernando Rivera to punish Sonny for his daughter's death despite being the one who ordered the car bomb. Rivera was working with a South American contact named the Tin Man to move drugs through Port Charles. The Tin Man was an associate of Dorman.

Carly argues with Tony, finds a drunk AJ, and sleeps with him.

April 1997

4/20/1997

Emily buys pot from Matt. It is laced with PCP. Dorman is the supplier. Emily gets high, thinking she can fly. Ned and Jax rescue her from the roof. Jason gives CPR and saves her life. Dorman is the on-call physician at GH and the only one available to treat her. Ned pages Alan and Monica, and they arrive and wait to hear what happened. Jason stands watch and threatens Dorman that if something happens to his sister, he'll make sure Dorman pays. Once Emily is considered stable, Alan and Monica request a different physician. In the morning, Jeff Webber takes over the case. Jeff primarily works in the ER but was off that night. He consults with Tony Jones after a CT scan is performed.

Monica says, "Jeff, thank you for taking the case over from Pierce. I didn't want him touching my little girl after everything that's happened."

"Monica, I don't mind—very few people like Dorman. I'm sorry about the court's ruling. That nurse, Rebecca Chase, lied. I wish we could prove it. Pierce's lawyer tried to get me on the stand. He thought he could get our past dredged up, but I told him I'd go to Alexis first. Alexis didn't think anything I'd say would be relevant, but I'm on your side. I'll watch over Emily as if she were Sarah or Elizabeth."

"Thank you, Jeff."

Jeff arrives home and calls for a family meeting. He says, "Sarah, Elizabeth, I was at GH today and treated Emily Quartermaine. She Od'ed on THC laced with PCP. She's going to survive, but her recovery will be a long process. Her cousin Ned and Jasper Jacks pulled her off her bedroom roof, and her brother Jason performed CPR until paramedics arrived. Elizabeth, you are friends with Emily; did you know she was involved with drugs? Have you gotten high with her?"

Elizabeth's hand covers her mouth in shock. "I swear, Dad, I didn't know. I promise I've never gotten stoned with her. She's been upset with the stuff going on with the Quartermaines, but I never thought she'd do something like that. Can I see her?"

Jeff hugs his daughter. "I'm sorry, sweetheart, but Emily is unconscious, and after she wakes, it could be days before she is allowed visitors. Do you know who her friends are? Monica mentioned a guy named Matt. Do you know him?"

"I don't know him that well. Lucky doesn't like him. Can you tell Mr. and Mrs. Quartermaine I'm thinking of Emily?"

Sarah says, "Yes, please tell them she's in our prayers. Does Nikolas Cassidine know? He's friends with Emily."

"I don't know. I'll tell Alan and Monica. Girls, you have school tomorrow. Please don't say anything to your classmates."

Sarah says, "Dad, I take my driver's exam in September. I already have my learner's permit. Do you think Gram would let me drive Gramp's old car?"

"Sure, I'll ask Audrey. You must take your sister when you drive."

4/22/1997

Luke tells Lucky about Emily. Sonny was at Luke's when Jason called and told him about Emily. "Dad, I need to be there. Has anyone questioned Matt Reynolds?"

"Cowboy, is Matt one of your classmates?"

"Yes. Emily is friends with him and has been hanging out with him since January. He's bad news, but she wouldn't listen to me. Please, I want to go to GH."

"I'll call the hospital and check on her status," Luke calls and speaks with Tony. "Thanks, Doc- ex-bro-in-law. I'll let Lucky know." Luke hangs up the phone. "Lucky, she is in recovery, but she's not allowed visitors. Jeff, Elizabeth's father, is one of Emily's doctors. She might have more information about her."

Lucky, Elizabeth, and Sarah are at lunch, and Lucky whispers, "Okay, I want to know what the fuck happened with Emily. My dad said she OD'ed, and your father was one of her doctors. What do you know?"

Elizabeth whispers, "I don't know. She's lucky. They won't know anything for a few days. Dad asked about Matt."

"I told my dad about Matt, too. He's not in class. If he had anything to do with what happened to Emily, I'll kill him."

"Lucky, your dad's friend, Sonny Corothinos, could he have had something to do with Emily? He was in the hospital last year of an overdose."

"Elizabeth, Sonny doesn't deal in drugs. He and Jason work hard to keep it out of Port Charles. Don't believe what people say. Jason and Sonny aren't like that."

Nikolas approaches the group and says, "Elizabeth, have you seen Emily recently?"

Lucky says, "What's it to you, Cassidine?"

Nikolas ignores Lucky, "Please, can you tell me something? Emily was acting strange, and I asked Jason, but he didn't know anything."

Sarah says, "Lizzie, he'll find out soon anyway. Nikolas should hear it from us."

Elizabeth sighs and tells Nikolas what happened with Emily. He promises he won't tell anyone.

Elizabeth writes in her journal. "My best friend almost died from a drug overdose. Dad said that someone dosed her pot with PCP. I'm lucky, I guess. I found Steven's stash after Mom left and smoked some because I was pissed at her. It made me sick, and I threw up. Dad found out, grounded me for two weeks, and made me write a research paper about the pros and cons of marijuana. Steven got in trouble, too."

Elizabeth applies for and gets a job waiting tables at Kelly's Diner.

4/29-5/1/1997

Dorman gives Matt drugs, and Matt Ods and dies.

Elizabeth and Lucky visit, and Alan asks them not to tell Emily about Matt.

Elizabeth says, "Emily, Lucky, and I are here for you. Whatever you need, all you have to do is ask."

Lucky says, "Yes, Emily. We care about you."

Emily cries, "I've let everyone down. I'm a disappointment."

AJ overhears and says, "No, you are not. Take it from me, the town drunk. Emily, you made a mistake. The whole family loves you. I'm sorry I wasn't here when you needed me." Elizabeth and Lucky quickly leave.

Jason is waiting outside and overhears his brother talking to Emily. Lucky says, "Jason, have you met Elizabeth Webber? She is also one of Emily's friends. Her father is one of Emily's doctors."

Jason replies, "Yes, we met at your grandfather's service last year. I'm glad Emily has you as a friend. She's told me about you. Do either of you know anything about her friend Matt Reynolds?"

Lucky says, "We didn't know about his drug use. I only had a weird feeling about him. His parents blame Emily for his OD, but Dr. Quartermaine doesn't want us to tell Emily."

"Thank you, Lucky. I will find out who is responsible. Stay clear of Dr. Dorman. It's nice to see you again, Elizabeth."

Summary

Emily and the Quartermaines have sessions with a drug counselor, and AJ attends AA meetings. Monica discovers Dorman is responsible for the drug overdoses and nearly kills him, but Jason steps in and stops her. Mac arrives and arrests the doctor. Emily learns Matt gave Dorman her diary, which was used to expose the family secrets during the trial. He is out on bail and heads to the morgue to retrieve the heroin he hid in a dead body. Carly Roberts finds Dorman's dead body. She discovers AJ and Jason are brothers.

Elizabeth visits Emily at the Quartermaines. Emily tells Elizabeth about the diary. Elizabeth blanches. "If Emily's diary can be stolen and shared with Port Charles, then anyone could take my journals. Maybe I'll ask Dad for a security safe or something."

May-June 1997

Summary

Audrey Hardy is hit on the head during a hostage crisis at GH. She's in a coma for two weeks. Tony Jones operates. Jeff, Sarah, and Elizabeth take turns visiting Audrey. Anne Logan comes for a visit. She stays until Audrey is home from the hospital and is back at work. Anne says goodbye and leaves Port Charles again.

Emily's counselor signs off on her drug rehab. She clears Emily to return to school in the Fall.

July 1997

The Tin Man tried to kill Jason and Robin at Mac's house. Jason was severely wounded. Sonny and Brenda are on the run from the Tin Man.

Jason recovers in the hospital; the Quartermaine family stands by for updates. Robin holds his hand.

Lucky and Elizabeth arrive at GH to sit with Emily. Nikolas offers his support. Elizabeth convinces Robin to take a coffee break. Robin tells about her history and how she got involved with Jason after his accident. Elizabeth says, "Emily talks a lot about Jason. She told me about her getting adopted, and not long after, Jason went from being a Quartermaine to being Jason Morgan. She said you've known Jason the longest outside of his family."

"Yes. Jason is a few years older, but we went to high school with his brother AJ, Brenda Barrett, and Jagger Cates. He was Stone's older brother; did Emily tell you about him?" Elizabeth nods.

"Brenda Barrett, the model? You went to school with her?"

Robin laughs, "We're best friends. She calls me her little sister. Thank you for the coffee, Elizabeth; I should get back to Jason."

7/25/1997

Robin worries too much and doesn't think she can handle his life. They break up.

7/31/1997

The Waterfront hosts a BBQ.

Emily and Elizabeth eat near the water. Sarah says hello to Emily before chatting with Keesha. Lucky interrupts Keesha and Sarah. He takes Sarah aside and flirts with her. Three older girls from school confront Emily about her drug overdose. One of the girls snarks, "Hello, Emily."

Emily replies, "Hi."

"Well, that figures."

"What?"

"High is what you are all about, girl."

Emily turns to leave, but the teen stops her. "Don't you have drugs to do?"

Elizabeth blocks the girl and says, "Don't you have a life to get to?"

"Who the fuck are you? Oh, right, you are Lizzy Webber, Sarah Webber's insignificant little sister. Be careful, if you hang out with this druggie, you might OD too."

Emily says, "Wow! I don't do drugs anymore, Lisa. Stupid of you to bring it up."

"Stupid? Are you calling me stupid? I'm not the one who OD'ed."

Elizabeth says, "Maybe not, but you are the one who is in my way."

Emily says, "Screw these girls, Liz. They aren't worth it." She takes Elizabeth's hand and pulls her away from the teens.

Lisa says, "Don't walk away from us, losers. Just wait until school starts."

Elizabeth replies, "I dealt with mean girls like you in Boulder. Girls like you are the losers."

Lisa sneers, "Bitch!"

Elizabeth laughs, "Damm, right I am!" She shoves Lisa, and Lisa falls back toward her friends. Lisa shoves Elizabeth back, and Elizabeth slaps her.

Lisa raised her hand, and a firm hand stopped her. "What the fuck?" Lisa turned to see who had prevented her from smacking the self-righteous Lizzy Webber.

Nikolas has been eyeing the encounter. He was amused at Elizabeth Webber's spunk and proud she defended Emily Quartermaine. He grabbed Lisa's wrist, stopping her from returning the slap. Lisa looked at Nikolas. Her eyes widened, and she said, "Cassidine, I didn't know you were friends with Lizzy and Emily."

"You do now. Elizabeth, are these girls bothering you and Emily?"

Elizabeth smirks, "They were. I think we have it under control. Don't you agree, Emily?"

Emily laughs. "Yes, thank you, Nikolas. Lisa, girls, we'll see you in school next month. Try not to miss class." The girls slink away.

Elizabeth laughs. "That was fun. Thanks, Nikolas."

"Anytime. I'm going to find Sarah."

Emily sighs, "What is it about your sister that Lucky and Nikolas find endearing?"

"Oh, her blondness and perfect manners." They both laugh.

August 1, 1997

Robin leaves to attend school in Paris at the Sorbonne. Jason and Robin share a tearful goodbye on the bridge. Robin says she has faith in his future.

8/8/1997

Elizabeth "borrows Jeff's car without permission and drives without a license. She visits Emily at the Quartermaines. When she returns home, her father grounds her for a week, and Elizabeth can only leave for work.

8/10/1997

Elizabeth meets Carly for the first time. Elizabeth is waiting tables at Kelly's. Carly says hello, asks for iced tea, and announces that she and Tony are getting married. Elizabeth thinks, "How low-class Carly is to steal Bobbie's husband and rub it in her face; she is not only marrying him but also having his baby."

8/11/1997

Sonny and Brenda discovered that Hernando Rivera had been the mastermind. Brenda and Jax found a library of video tapes in which Rivera admitted that he had Dorman killed and was responsible for the drug trade in Port Charles. Sonny kills Rivera in defense of Brenda.

Jax kills Tin Man in defense of Sheriff Deputy V Ardanowski. She arrived with Jax to rescue Sonny and Brenda.

The fallout over Dorman made it possible for Monica to clear her reputation and return to GH.

8/15/1997

Carly drugs AJ. She drags AJ into a laundry cart. Jason knocks on the door to see his brother. Carly stops what she is doing and waits for Jason to leave. Jason hears a noise but decides to wait before knocking again. Carly throws a bottle of vodka in the cart on top of an unconscious AJ. Jason sees Carly open the door and push the laundry cart out. He stops her and looks inside.

"Carly, what the hell! Why is AJ in this cart? Why is there a bottle of vodka on top of him?"

"Forget I was here."

"What did AJ do to you?"

"I can't tell you."

You don't have to tell me your reasons, but you will take him back inside. He has been clean for months. My sister has been going through a difficult time, and he's been helpful. Whatever your issues are with him, he doesn't deserve to be set up like this."

"I don't mean to hurt AJ. I only want him to think he slipped up and forget what happened."

"What did AJ do to you? Did he hurt you?"

Her voice trembles, "No, I mean yes, he…"

"Carly, don't lie. I can tell when someone is lying, and I'm an expert at knowing when you lie. If you don't want to explain, fine. But if you try anything like this again, you will regret it."

"I didn't know you cared about your brother that much."

"AJ and I aren't close, but he's been nice to me. He hasn't tried to push an agenda on me. He's accepting I've changed, unlike the Old Man."

"I need your help. AJ could ruin everything I have with Tony if he remembers."

"Remembers what? I don't want to know, but I have my suspicions. If I can help you, I will. But not at the expense of AJ Quartermaine."

September 1997

Summary

Sonny has plans to leave the business and wants Jason to take over the organization. He proposes to Brenda. The plan is after they leave for their honeymoon, they will disappear.

Elizabeth steals the wedding invite from Ruby for Sonny and Brenda. Ruby is allowed in by Luke vouching for his Aunt. Elizabeth tries to enter with the stolen invite and is prevented from entering. Lucky covers for her and tells the guards that Elizabeth is his plus one. He grabs her elbow and whispers, "Do not make a scene. Keep your mouth shut. You owe me for this."

Sonny recalls his dangerous life and how it's affected the women he's loved. He recalls his wife Lily dying in a car bomb meant for him. Sonny changes his mind and asks Jason to tell Brenda that Sonny left her. Jason refuses.

"Sonny, I follow your orders in business, but I will not clean up your personal life. You are a coward. If you believe breaking Brenda's heart is necessary to save her from your enemies, you should do it yourself. Brenda is not my favorite person, but she is Robin's best friend. Brenda deserves the truth from you, not some false apology from me."

"Jason, you obey me. When I tell you to do something, you do it, no questions asked!"

"Sorry, Sonny. Not this time."

Sonny swings at Jason, and Jason dodges the fist. Jason grabs Sonny's arm and says, "You want out; this is how you will do it. I will take control of the organization, but first, you tell Brenda. Tell her whatever you think she needs to hear and leave. I won't take responsibility for your decision.

Sonny rubs his arm, "Fine! But you promise to keep her safe?"

"Yes, I have guards around her, and they will stay hidden so she won't be aware she is being watched. Enjoy your retirement."

9/22/1997

The wedding doesn't happen. Sonny tells Brenda something, and she slaps him in front of the guests and runs out.

October-November 1997

AJ confesses to Keesha what he is trying to remember. He says, "This isn't easy. About seven months ago, I got drunk and blocked it out. We ended up in Jason's room."

"Do you think you are the father of Carly's baby?"

"I'm not sure, but this will be resolved when the baby's born. I'm going to confront Carly. I'm sorry. I'm getting my shit together, and I want to try with you again."

AJ approaches Carly. He questions if he could be the father of her baby. Carly panics; she recruits Lorraine Miller, with whom she went to nursing school before dropping out. She pays her to change the sonogram tests, stating that she is due in early December, not early January.

Carly explains to Lorraine her problem. Lorraine asks if she and Jason have done it, but Carly says it was over a year ago and that they're just friends. She tells Lorraine about Jason and the type of person he is. Lorraine suggests she marry Jason. Carly laughs. She thinks Tony will come around because the baby is everything to him. Carly doesn't want AJ to be the father.

At the hospital, Carly begins to argue with AJ about the court order for the paternity test. Carly asks, "AJ, what will you do even if this child is yours?"

"I want to know if I am a father. I don't want to take Tony's place, but I want to help raise my child. I love Keesha."

"This baby is mine. You stay away from me and it, even if it is yours. I won't let you take my baby away from me."

"Carly, there is something called shared custody."

Carly retorts, "Not with you." She walks off.

Meanwhile, Tony tells Bobbie he is suing Carly for sole custody of the baby. Carly finds out and tells Tony he's not the father; Jason is. AJ overhears and announces he believes he is the father.

December 1997

12/8-14/1997

Luke's Club

Summary

Elizabeth, Emily, and Lucky are at the party, dancing and having a good time. Nikolas walks in, and Luke wants to see his invitation. He tells Luke he's there with an invited guest, but he'll wait outside since she's not there yet.

Jason says, "Luke, someone wants us to open the back room. They step outside to discuss business. Luke asks him what the stakes are, and at that moment, shots are fired. Everyone scatters. Lucky shields Elizabeth and Sarah.

Outside, Nikolas is on the ground, gasping for air. He's been shot in the throat. Sarah shows up and sees the bodies. One of Jason's bodyguards, Pete, is dead.

Nikolas still has trouble breathing, and Sarah runs to him and freaks out. Jason orders Mike to get her away from there. Elizabeth comes to the aid of her sister. Alan walks outside; Emily tells him Jason is okay, and he wants her to go inside.

Jason cuts a slit in Nikolas' throat so he can breathe, and Luke helps. Monica arrives and says Jason did a good job. Jason was able to allow Nikolas to get some air in his throat. Nikolas is put on the stretcher and taken in the ambulance. Sarah tries to talk to him, but Monica tells her he can't hear her.

Alan asks Monica what happened, and she points out that someone was trying to murder their son. Emily says Jason told her things were going to be different and that they weren't trying to kill him. She believes he doesn't lie. Lucky thinks maybe they were after his dad. He asks where his dad is. Lucky can't understand why he left because a Cassadine means nothing.

At GH, Stefan brings in a specialist, and the doctor tells Stefan that without that emergency surgery, Nikolas would have died. He will be on a ventilator for the next few days and won't be able to speak. Stefan insists Sarah should leave. She wants to stay and tells Stefan and Lucky she's not leaving. Jeff reasons with Stefan that Sarah cares about Nikolas and is only concerned about his recovery. Sarah will stay if she wants to, whether Stefan likes it or not. Sarah thanks her father for defending her decisions.

Lucky and Elizabeth return to the Webber house, and Elizabeth packs some food and clothes for Sarah. Lucky says he hates waiting around hospitals; it reminds him of Lulu. Elizabeth asks him if he's going to see his brother. Nikolas lets Lucky know that he's not to blame for what happened. Nikolas, however, still refused to see Sarah.

Elizabeth writes in her journal. "Nikolas is fighting for his life. Emily, Lucky, and I went to Luke's Blues Club. Nikolas was shot in the throat, and Emily's brother Jason saved his life. I overheard her mother say the bullet was meant for Jason. Emily said that her brother, before his accident, used to be pre-med. Dad called it muscle memory. Even though Jason doesn't remember his life before the accident, there are some things he knows how to do. I think that's cool. Sarah is upset because Nikolas doesn't want to see her. Lucky still hates him. Dad said maybe Lucky and Nikolas can find common ground because of this."

Jason

Taggert and Garcia bring Jason in for questioning. Jason says he has nothing to say to them. Justus points out that all Jason did was save a life. Justus wants a few minutes alone with Jason. He asks Jason if he's called Valentine, one of Sonny's lawyers. Jason informs him Valentine is running for his life because he is one of the three people who know Sonny is gone for good. Justus says he'll handle this situation, and they'll see from there. Jason is released.

Jason gets a call from rival mob boss Marino at the station, asking him if the good news has reached Paris yet. Cesar Faison visits Jason at the PH, makes a veiled threat, and mentions Paris.

Jason flies to Paris to check on Robin. He's had guards on her since she left town. In Paris, Jason discusses Robin's surveillance with his French contact. While trying to walk away, being unseen by Robin, she spots him, and they kiss and hug. Robin asks why he is there, and Jason explains he has taken Sonny's place in the organization. He tells her about the drive-by at Luke's. Robin says they should enjoy their time together and not discuss a situation they can't change. They say goodbye, and Jason returns to Port Charles.

12/15/1997

Carly tells Tony he's not the father; Jason is. Tony thinks this is all a lie, but Carly says, "Jason and I had sex more than once. We would meet and have low-down, dirty sex. He's a better lover than you are."

"What about Robin? Jason loves her and would not do that to her."

"We had sex because the little angel couldn't give it to him. We were about sex, not love. You were easy to fool." Carly explains that all the times he found them together, they had just had sex. She thinks he believes her and challenges him to say she's lying. Carly says he can't because he knows it's true. (Meanwhile, this is just another one of her lies) Carly insults him and calls him a loser, saying he was an alternative to working. "Jason has all the money I need."

12/16/1997

Jason meets with his bodyguards and associates at the PH. "I found the shooters, and they'll be gone by next week. Sonny has left, and I'm in charge." Jason lets them in on what he knows about Marino and plans to get rid of Marino. The associates are reassured, and he has their full support. He lets them know they will not regret this. Suddenly, Carly is outside screaming that she needs to see Jason. He goes to the door, and she's standing there, soaking wet from the rain.

Jason tells Carly he's in a meeting right now, and she cries, "If you make me leave, I don't know what's going to happen to me." Jason nods to them, and they leave.

Jason asks her to stop crying and warm up in the upstairs bathroom. He hands her a T-shirt and a pair of sweats. She returns. "Tony doesn't love me anymore. Maybe he never did. I realize you didn't have much use for him. I have a confession. Bobbie is my biological mother. My real name is Caroline Leigh Benson. She gave me up for adoption and thinks I'm dead. I don't know who my father is; neither does Bobbie. I'm just like her because I don't know who the father of my baby is either."

Carly tells Jason about her anger at finding out who her birth mother was and how upset she was when she found out about the happy life she was leading.

"I expected her to be poor, unable to raise a child, and here she was, raising another adopted child. She just didn't want me. I came to make her pay. I thought Tony would be a way to make Bobbie sorry for what she'd done to me, but instead, I fell in love with him."

"Who else knows?"

"Luke, and he never lets me forget it. He tried to get me to leave Port Charles."

Jason rubs his face, "What do you need from me?"

"During one of my breakups with Tony, I slept with someone else, and then we made up, and I slept with Tony on the same night."

"Is it AJ's or Dr. Jones?"

"How did you know?"

"I'm not a fool, Carly. You drugged AJ and were going to make him think he was drinking again. You didn't want him to remember he slept with you."

"At first, AJ didn't remember that night. He started to figure things out. I told AJ it was Tony's. I told Tony it's yours. If I have to, I'll tell AJ the same."

Jason looks surprised. Carly defends what she did, claiming she won't let either take her child away. Jason asks if she ever thought she'd get caught, and Carly admits she thought things would go differently.

"Carly, I am too busy right now. I'm in charge of the organization. I don't care if you tell people it's mine, but I won't lie if asked. They will want blood tests and will find out I'm not the father."

"I don't understand why you won't lie for me. I was going to lie for you when I found Dr. Dorman's body."

"You don't plan ahead, Carly. You think by lying, you have covered all your bases. I didn't kill Dorman. I wanted to, but I wouldn't ask for an alibi. You are a lousy liar."

"I already have a backup plan. I have a friend from nursing school who will help me. I could use some money. It will give me more time to decide what's next.

Jason tells Carly he'll help in any way he can. She asks if she can stay there. He says okay. Carly tells Jason she'll do all the lying, and he doesn't have to say anything.

Carly lies to everyone about Jason being the father of her baby.

Alan announces Jason's going to be a father. The family is surprised, and at first, they think it's Robin's, but Alan says, "No, it's Carly Roberts."

Emily says, "Jason can't be the father because Jason is in love with Robin, and they were still together eight or nine months ago."

Jason tells Carly she is in danger of being with him and will have to find another place to live once the baby is born. Carly says, "I don't have any money to get another place, and I need a friend right now."

Jason feels sorry for her and says she can live with him until the first sign of danger. He offers her money.

At the hospital, Alan tells AJ about Tony and Carly breaking up and how Carly says Tony isn't the father of her baby; Jason is. AJ tells his father that Jason isn't the father, and even if he were, it wouldn't make Jason leave his present lifestyle no matter how much Alan wants Jason to.

Carly asks Jason questions about his business, and she is helping Jason with the books. He tells her she doesn't need to know anything other than how to balance the money. There is a knock at the door. Tony walks in, wanting to know the truth. Jason sidesteps Tony's questions.

Tony doesn't directly ask Jason if he is the baby's father, and Jason doesn't come out and say he is. Tony accuses Carly of being unfit, and Jason sticks up for her. Jason throws Tony out. Carly wants to make Jason the baby's legal father.

AJ tells Carly he can prove she is lying as soon as he can ask Jason because Jason is incapable of lying. They begin to argue when Jason walks in. Carly leaves but is worried Jason will reveal the truth. Jason admits he disagrees with what Carly has done, but it is over, and no one can tell her what to do with her baby. Jason also tells AJ he will continue to help her. AJ asks Jason if he could be the father of Carly's baby.

One of Jason Morgan's traits is he doesn't lie. Technically, he keeps his mouth shut and lets others lie for him. Robin once told him he didn't lie; he just didn't tell. Jason admits to AJ that he had slept with Carly but did not claim the paternity of her baby. AJ, however, jumped to conclusions and lashed out furiously in Carly's presence by stating that she was a danger to her baby. AJ cites the pain caused to Robin. AJ told Carly that whether it was between him or Tony, Carly would never be able to keep the baby. By pledging his full support, Jason helped Carly calm down and stop fearing that she would lose her baby. The voice inside Jason's head tells him his actions are wrong, but he will keep her secret until Carly has her baby. The baby needs to be healthy.

Jason and Carly return from the lawyer's office with a document that allows Jason to have power of attorney for Carly and his name on the baby's birth certificate. Jason warns Carly she should still be cautious because paternity tests still have to be performed once the baby is born. Jason tries to comfort Carly, telling her he will do anything she needs done to help her keep the baby. Jason then leaves to run an errand. Carly says she's got it covered.

Carly gives birth

12/26/1997

Carly is on the floor, bleeding. She tried to reach the phone but lost consciousness before calling for help. Jason walked in and found her on the floor. He covered her with a blanket and drove to the hospital. In the ER, Carly heard Bobbie's voice and begged her not to let them take her baby away from her. Carly gives birth to a baby boy, born with a heart problem. Jason waits to see if the condition can be reversed with medication.

Carly slipped into a coma and needed emergency surgery, which could require a hysterectomy. Bobbie pleaded with Jason not to let that happen. Jason took her advice.

Bobbie learned that the medication hadn't helped the baby and that he would need surgery to correct his heart problem. Monica mentions that his brother AJ was born with the same condition, so it must be heredity, having it passed on from Alan. Jason holds his breath, hoping Monica doesn't make the connection that it's because of AJ. After conferring with Monica, Jason opted for the baby to have surgery, against Tony's wishes. The surgery was successful, and Tony was saddened to learn that the baby's blood type ruled him out as the father.

Monica told the rest of the Quartermaines that Jason's child had been born, and the family converged on the hospital. After watching his family's behavior, AJ decided to conduct his own paternity test later so that the Quartermaines would not be alerted.

The Outback

12/31/1997

After being rejected by Nikolas, Sarah joins Elizabeth and her father at the Outback. Elizabeth is disappointed that Lucky hasn't arrived for the New Year's Eve party.

Emily arrives from the hospital. She pulls Elizabeth aside. "Liz, I am so pissed at Jason. Carly Roberts's baby is in recovery from a heart defect, but Dad said Jason is the father. How could he do that to Robin? They were in love. They broke up less than five months ago. Dr. Jones's blood doesn't match the baby's."

Elizabeth hugs her best friend. "I don't know Em. The last time I saw Robin, she was upset about leaving him, but I saw how they looked at each other. I wish Lucky would look at me that way. I'm surprised, too. I hope Jason tells Robin the truth. She deserves that much."
