"Nee, Ranpo-niichan. I really don't know what you mean. Though, if I was hiding anything, wouldn't it be dangerous to share it out in the open like this?" Conan asked, putting on a confused child act.
Ranpo narrowed his eyes, looking down at Conan, "If you want me to play along to the charade of you being my cousin, you need to come clean."
"Hm, make it brother."
"We don't even look alike."
"So?"
Sighing, Ranpo pinched the bridge of his nose, "Fine. Now fess up."
Conan's child act dropped from her face as she muttered, "Not here."
Nodding, Ranpo continued to lead them down various paths before stopping, "You know, I am very bad with directions. I hope you know where we are going."
Conan paused behind Ranpo before face-palming, "You're directionally challenged and you have been leading up this whole time?"
"Hey! I prefer the term free-spirited."
Sigh, "Of course."
Walking in front of Ranpo, Conan pulled out her phone and opened up a map so that she could find a decent spot to have their conversation. Settling on a park near the water, she began leading Ranpo towards the spot.
What a weird turn of events. She came to Yokohama to investigate the murders and to sightsee but instead ended up meeting the Detective Agency and finding a fake family member… fantastic.
After a while of walking in silence, she decided to ask Ranpo some questions. Forgoing the childish tone, she got Ranpo's attention, "Ranpo-san, can you explain the murders to me?"
While taking more sweets out of his pocket, Ranpo answered with an uninterested tone, "So far, each murder supposedly was committed out of sight of cameras and witnesses. Each also happened in an area that is impossible or not easy to drop off bodies in. So, for short, it looks like an ability is behind the transportation of the body at least."
"And the method of killing?"
"Probably another ability. One that can kill someone without leaving traces behind. But what do I know, I haven't even laid eyes on a crime scene yet."
"What if there are no abilities behind the murders?"
Ranpo paused in his chewing of sweets, "Well, then that would be a problem. Though, I highly doubt that no abilities are involved."
"Hm."
"...Do you know of a way to kill someone without leaving evidence?"
Conan did not respond. Instead, she quickened her pace towards the secluded waterside park that was now in sight.
"Oi, don't ignore me."
"Even though I know why you aren't saying anything until you get to the park, you should acknowledge him, Conan-kun," Hiro stated, walking in line with Conan.
Conan rolled her eyes as she walked with Ranpo and Hiro into the park, glancing around. The park had very few trees and bushes, instead, it consisted mostly of walkways and benches. Perfect.
Clearing her throat, she looked around once more before talking, "Three years ago, I came across a deal between a businessman and a man in black. I was so focused on the deal, that I didn't realize the man in black had a partner who came around and hit me in the head, knocking me out.
They didn't shoot me cause they knew they would alert the police who were still in the area due to a crime committed a few hours earlier. So, they ended up giving me an experimental poison that was supposed to kill me and be untraceable.
Instead, it ended up de-aging me by ten years. This incident pushed me into concealing my identity and coming up with a fake name so that those around me wouldn't get hurt."
Ranpo hummed as he followed along with the shortened version of the story, "And your name?"
"Ah, Shinichi Kudo. Conan Edogawa came from a book and a document in my library."
"Shinichi… Ah, the modern-day Holmes."
Conan blushed at that name, "That's just what the newspapers say."
"Yeah, but you posed for photos for those articles."
"Oi, oi. I've toned it down since then. I'm much less cocky now."
Ranpo snorted at that remark, continuing to munch on some sweets, "And the guys in black?"
"Part of the Black Organization. They are based in Japan but have global connections."
Ranpo's brow scrunched up in confusion, "If the organization is that large, one of my connections should have heard about it."
"They have been active for at least fifty years."
"If that's the case, then I definitely should have heard about them. Maybe they aren't as big of a problem as you believe them to be."
"Eh, they kill everyone who discovers them. Maybe all of your connections had people die to them and couldn't figure out the issue. Hm? Didn't think of that, did you?"
Ranpo sighed, "You're going to be a majorly annoying brother, aren't you?"
Conan shrugged, "Probably."
Groaning, Ranpo stuffed a few more treats in his mouth, "What about your ability?"
"Ah… that's…"
Ranpo raised a brow at Conan.
Conan sighed, rubbing her head as she looked out over the water, "Essentially, I can see spirits and talk to them."
"You have a ghost that follows you around."
"Correct. He has been hanging around for around four years now."
"..."
"He doesn't do anything bad! He was a police officer!"
"Ah…"
Conan groaned, putting her head in her hands. Hiro stood off to the side laughing. She glared at Hiro, "Oh, shut up!"
Hiro only laughed harder.
"So, the officer is here," Ranpo stated, glancing to the spot that she practically yelled at.
She straightened up, "Yeah, he is always by my side."
"Is that the limit to your abilities?"
"As far as I know. My parents brought me here several years ago to talk with some people about it but with the Dragon's Head Conflict, we had to exit the city."
"Hm. Well, I think your ability can expand beyond just talking and interacting with ghosts."
Conan snorted at the thought. She tried everything she could with Hiro to possibly expand her abilities with no such luck.
"It is always a possibility. It could just be a mental block. Think about it."
Sighing, Conan nodded. "Oh, by the way, Conan-kun," Ranpo started. "If people start really pressuring you on your true identity, you should just deny it until the very end."
Conan rolled her eyes, "I know. The only reason I even told you was because my father had documents about you. He said if I needed anything and that they were unavailable, I could come to the Detective Agency since they had someone who would see the truth."
Ranpo smiled slightly before nodding, "Mm, well, time to get you home, Conan-kun. You know, bedtime and all that."
Hiro rolled his eyes, muttering, "I've been trying to tell her that for years."
Conan snorted before grabbing Ranpo's hand and dragging him towards the hotel where the kids were at.
Upon reaching the hotel, Ranpo and Conan parted ways with Conan hoping that Ranpo wouldn't get too lost. Walking towards her room, starting to yawn, she was slightly confused to see Haibara up and waiting in the hallway.
"Find what you were looking for, Kudo?" Haibara asked while typing something in on her phone.
"In a sense. Also found a family member," Conan nonchalantly stated.
At that, Haibara whipped her head towards Conan with a fearful look, "Wha-"
"Don't worry, they are an ally. But don't be surprised when you see another Edogawa at a crime scene. If anything, this will just help cement my cover."
"That's if he agrees, Kudo!"
"Ah, details, details. Besides, we have already come to an agreement. And my parents trusted him long before I actually met him."
"Kudo-"
"Like I said Haibara, he is an ally. Just let me handle everything. All right?"
Haibara still looked hesitant before nodding, "Okay."
"Good. Now, it's time for bed. Don't you know, growing kids need a lot of sleep?"
Haibara rolled her eyes before quietly saying goodnight and returning to her room. Conan disappeared into her room shared by the boys.
Sighing, she quietly closed the door and went to her bag, opening it silently. She could hear Genta and Mitsuhiko snoring away.
"Well," Hiro began. "That was an eventful day."
Conan nodded, whispering, "Yeah, such an interesting crowd…"
"And brother…"
"Yeah."
"That's going to be a hard sell."
"Different mothers, separated for years and are finally reconnecting. A simple story that doesn't need to be looked at too hard."
"I guess…"
"Cops don't really look too hard at the details."
"I do!" Hiro sounded slightly offended.
"Standard cops then. Public Security Bureau agents work on a different level."
"... Fine. I'll take that."
Quietly laughing, Conan continued, "Yeah, though, it is annoying that we didn't get a lot of information, just more of what we already knew."
"Unfortunately… Okay, time for bed Conan-kun."
Nodding in agreement, Conan went to change into pajamas while Hiro turned around. Quietly telling Hiro it was okay, she got into bed, stretching out as Hiro took a sitting position on the foot of her bed, watching over them.
Smiling, Conan closed her eyes, ready for what tomorrow would bring.
