"Valerie, are you certain you want to go to work today?" Why not stay at home?" While parked outside her sister's apartment building, Vega said to her sister.
"I can't afford to take any days off because I need to work," Valerie buckled her seat belt.
"Valerie, you've only been in the car for two minutes and you already seem exhausted. In fact, the air conditioning is turned on."
"Can you even get to the bus by yourself?" Vega asked.
"I wouldn't have called you if I could."
"Then stay at home," Vega yelled.
"Mavis I already have a headache, and I don't need you to aggravate it. "So, please start driving the car," Valerie shouted back. then rubbed her head with her hand
"I'm sorry. I'm not going to do anything strenuous today." Valerie took a deep breath and said, "I'll be in the tech room with Mouse."
"Okay, but I don't want to get a call telling me you passed out today. or see you in the ER unless it's to question a suspect," Mavis noted.
Deal Valerie gave a nod.
...
Valerie was dropped off in the 21st district. Mavis parked her car and went to the ED, where she saw Ethan walking to his car.
Good morning, Dr. Choi, she said as she walked through the parking lot.
"Good morning, Dr. Vega." He spoke
The sound of a man's voice drew their attention.
Help! Help anyone!
"I need help here!" The man yelled as he was carrying a girl in his arms with blood all over her pants. Ethan and Mavis wasted no time in reaching the man with the young girl.
"I got her, I got her, I got her," Dr. Choi repeated as he cradled the injured girl in his arms. The three of them rushed to the ED.
"She's bleeding from somewhere," Dr. Choi informed Maggie as they rushed in.
"Trauma two. Get your asses over here," Maggie orders.
"Who is she? What happened?" Maggie questioned the man who had brought her in as Ethan and Mavis helped the girl into the room. and the nurses rushed in.
Mavis had not yet changed into her scrubs, but she gloved up and assisted Ethan in treating the patient.
"I don't know. I just found her a couple of blocks away," the man pointed in the girl's direction.
"Let's get her on the monitor," Dr. Vega ordered. She grabbed a stethoscope and began using it to listen to the girl's heartbeat and listen to her pulse.
Conner then walked into the room putting gloves over his hands. "Where is the bleeding coming from?" he asked.
"Working on it," Dr. Choi said.
"HR 130. BP's at least 90. I've got a radial pulse," said as she looked at the monitor behind her.
"All right get two lines," Dr. Rhodes said. "On it," Sexton said.
"Get an I-STAT ABG and send labs. Make sure we type and cross"
"Can you hear me? can you tell me what happened?" Dr. Vega asked the girl as she saw she was conscious and able to open her eyes.
"The blood ... Did you get shot?" but the girl didn't answer, just blinked.
As Ethan and April removed the girl's clothes, it was realized that she was bleeding from an umbilical cord.
"This kid just delivered a baby," Dr. Vega looked at Ethan and April.
"What do mean just?" Dr. Choi asked
"Maybe five minutes ago."
"She's still bleeding. Clamp," Dr. Rhodes said.
"Where did you deliver this baby?" Dr. Vega asked her, but she didn't respond once again.
"Hey what happened to your baby?" Dr. Rhodes asked.
Conner and April then hurried out of the ED. The man who brought the girl in. Lead both of them to the location where he discovered her. Conner and April found a bookbag and opened it, finding the baby inside.
Fortunately, they were able to revive the baby and rush him back to the Hospital. By the time they went in search of the baby, The girl was cleaned up and warped on the bed in a blanket.
...
"She hasn't delivered the placenta, yet it has to come out. Where the hell is OB?" swung her arms in the air, waiting for them.
"Stuck in a delivery. I can do it," Dr. Choi said. Mavis quickly turned and faced him. "I've done it before," he said.
Then Conner and April made it back with the baby. seeing conner with the newborn in his hands. "I'm gonna have Dr. Manning on the baby. Look wait for OB to come down to remove the placenta alright?" Mavis faced Ethan again.
"Okay, I'm gonna change out of these clothes," which were now soaked in blood. "Page me if anything," Dr. Vega said before heading off to her locker for her scrubs.
Reaching the doctor's lounge, Mavis walked over to her locker and punched her cord in opening it. someone then walked into the room.
"What happened to you," the voice wondered aloud. Mavis turned her head slowly and looked at the person whose voice she recognized.
"Oh, it's you," she said, her eyes glaring at him.
"Mavis, come on! It's been over a week, and you still haven't spoken to me."
"Of course, I've been talking to you," Dr. Vega said. I haven't been giving you the silent treatment. "
"You just told me to go here and then there to treat that patient. then there's that one"
"It's called doing my job," she retorted grabbing her scrubs.
"Will, you still haven't apologized for what you said last week?"
"Now I don't hold grudges very often, but just say sorry and we'll be fine."
Will, then sighed and said, "I'm sorry for what I said about your mother and you becoming Chief resident last week."
"Thank you," she said, nodding.
"Wait a minute, we're cool, just like?" Dr. Halstead raised his brow.
"All I wanted was an apology.
"Now, if you're wondering why I'm dressed in bloody clothes, it's because we had an emergency patient, and I didn't have time to change into my scrubs yet."
"Please excuse me while I go change." Mavis exited the room after closing her locker.
...
Mavis went over to Maggie after she had finished changing and learning about the baby's condition.
"Hey Maggie," she greeted.
"Hello, Dr. Vega," she said
"How's baby doe? Poor thing," Maggie asked.
"He's table for now. And the mother?" Dr. Vega asked.
"Just came to. Do we have any information on her yet," Dr. Vega asked.
"All we know is that her name is Erika," Maggie said. passing her an iPad with the patient's chart on it.
"Thank you," Dr. Vega said walking into Erika's room.
"Hello, Erika. I'm Dr. Vega," She introduced herself by placing the iPad under her arm and beginning to type on the computer in the room.
"When can I leave?" Erika asked looking over at mavis as she was in the bed.
"Based on how much blood you lost and what your body's gone through. I'd say you're at least here overnight," turned to face Erika and then back to the computer.
"Is there anyone I can call, your mother or father," Dr. Vega walked over placing the iPad down.
"No," Erika said
"Maybe a friend?"
Erika shook her head breaking eye contact with mavis for a moment then looked back up. "Did they find the backpack?"
Mavis took a moment before answering. "Yes," she nodded. Erika's eyes started to become watery
"How did you end up in that alley, Erika?" Dr. Vega furrows her brow at her. "Why did you leave your baby there?" she shook her head
"I don't know. I mean I knew something was going on inside me, but I figured if could not just think about it then maybe..."
Erika then burst into tears as she shook her head. "I'm so stupid" she sobbed. "I'm just so happy that somebody found him."
Mavis then sat gently beside her on the bed. "Erika, honey, how old are you?"
"Fourteen. There is someone you can call," she said.
...
Outside with Conner Both Mavis and he was discussing the situation with Erika.
"She's 14 scared and alone," Dr. Vega said.
"What about the family?" Dr. Rhodes asked.
"Her mother's in prison. Father's long gone. She does have an older sister living in champaign, though," Dr. Vega said. "I left a message."
"Here's the thing she was two blocks away," Mavis looked at Conner. pointing out with her finger.
"Two blocks... maybe she was trying to make it here."
"Is that what she said." Dr. Rhodes asked
"She clamed the umbilicord. She did not mean to harm that baby," insisted. while Ethan joined their conversation.
"Right, put him in a backpack. Leave him in an alley. That'll keep him safe."
"It's not that cut and dried. She was delirious," Dr. Vega said to Ethan.
"She left her baby to die it's exactly that cut and dry."
"She's a child. She wasn't ready for any of this, right?" Mavis looked at Conner.
"People come here for help. I try to leave my feelings out of it," Dr. Rhodes responded while drinking his coffee.
"Well, that's convenient. Look you don't understand because you're not a woman," Dr. Vega said looking back at Ethan.
"Don't give me that. People need to be held accountable, regardless of sex," Dr. Choi Chided.
"This is a safe haven she could have dropped the baby off, no questions asked," Dr. Rhodes said.
"So now you do have feelings? She's got to live with this for the rest of her life. do you really want to punish her as well?"
"You're talking as if there's a happy ending where that baby survives."
"That baby is going to survive," Dr. Vega said. "And if he doesn't what that girl did is murder."
"How you gonna feel then?" Dr. Choi asked.
"I'll feel exactly the same way I do now." Sorry about it; she's a fourteen-year-old girl who made a mistake," Dr. Vega then walked
...
Mavis entered Erika's room after learning she needed surgery, which Conner had informed her of. She passed by the room Conner was about to leave, and Ethan was also there.
"I thought I got it all," Dr. Choi said.
"Dr. Choi, forcefully removing the placenta is an OB procedure. "I thought I told to wait for OB, Dr. Vega crossed her arms
"It was an emergency, so I made a decision Dr. Choi said
"A bad one!" Dr. Vega raised her voice. You overstepped bounds, and you botched it. Erika almost needed a hysterectomy. A 14-year-old!"
"Now let me ask you something, . "You didn't like this patient. You disapproved of her."
"You think that affected my judgment and my performance?"
You tell me. Remember, I'm still your Chief Resident, and if I tell you to do something, you do it unless you have no other choice," returned to Erika's room.
...
Natalie kept going back and forth to check on the baby. who required surgery after his right lung collapsed Mavis was then informed that Erika's sister had arrived, so she went to see her.
"Kara, I'm Mavis, we had spoken on the phone," Dr. Vega greeted her walking into the waiting room.
"I brought Erika some clothes," she said turning to face Mavis.
"Thank you," Dr. Vega shook her hand.
"Where my sister?" Kara asked
"Follow me," dr. Vega said leading Kara into the ED
"There were some complications with the birth, but we think the baby's gonna be just fine?"
"You Think?"
"It's still very early, but we have the best neonatal ICU in the Midwest." Mavis turned back to look at her.
"I can take you up to see him if you want."
"Maybe later," Kara said.
"I spoke with a social worker, and it may be possible for Erika and the baby to come live with you," Dr. Vega said as they both stopped in front of Erika's room.
After hearing that Kara looked off to the side and sighed. "Let me talk to her."
Mavis nodded and opened the door, allowing Kara to enter the room. Mavis was losing hope after closing the door and seeing Kara's reaction to everything she was telling her.
Mavis waited for Kara to come out of the room. When she did and closed the door Mavis walked up to her.
"Ready to see your nephew?" she asked her.
"I wish I could help them," Kara continued walking down the hall.
"Kara?"
"I just got a promotion..."
"Customer service rep and my boyfriend and I are talking about moving in together. I've come too far to get sucked back into this crap again," Kara argued clasping her hands to her stomach.
"They're your family," Mavis stood in front of her. "You are her sister she needs you."
"You make that sound like a good thing," Kara said then walked away.
...
When Kim and Sean arrived to speak with Erika at the end of Mavis' shift, she led them to her room. When she opened the door, it was empty. Erika had run away
Mavis felt terrible and it bothered her that Kara refused to help, but what can you do? Mavis left the hospital to pick up Valerie from the 21st district.
Parking out front. Valerie was sitting on the district's steps. Mavis then exited and walked up the stairs. Valerie had her head on her knees. Mavis, who sat beside her, how was work?
Valerie quickly raised her head. "Exhausting," she said, lowering her head once more.
"Valerie," Mavis smiled gently. "You are aware that I adore you, right?" she said.
"Of course, I do, but where did this come from?" Valerie turned and tilted her head.
"It's nothing, just know that I'll always be there for you no matter what. You're my sister." Mavis gently nudged her.
Valerie simply smiled. "Come on, let's go home."
