"Dr. Rhodes, thank you so much for the fish taco," Dr. Vega said as he purchased the taco from the food truck. She gave Conner a friendly smile.
"Sure thing," he said as everyone else went to get their food, which Conner had offered to pay for.
"Hey Will, you sure you don't want anything?" Dr. Rhodes called out to him.
"Yeah, I brought something from home," Dr. Halstead responded with his hands stuffed in his coat pocket.
"You brought something from home? I've seen your fridge. What'd you bring expired yogurt and baking soda," Dr. Manning said looking up at will.
"All right, we get it. He's rich," Dr. Halstead said.
"He's just new. He's trying to be nice," Dr. Vega said sitting down next to April and Natalie.
"What is that?" Dr. Vega asked looking at Natalie's food. "It's some cabbage kale thing. I promised my mother-in-law I would try it, so.."
"Let me get you a napkin," Will left to find one for Natalie, who had some of the food on her face.
"Um... Nat, I think me and April are catching on to something," Dr. Vega said.
"Yeah, I think I'm seeing it too," April said.
"Easy, you two, we're just friends," Dr. Manning said.
"If you say so," Dr. Vega smirked.
"Oh, what about you and Dr. Rhodes?" Natalie then motioned with her fork in his direction.
"What? No, I'm too busy; I have an E.D. to attend to." Mavis shook her head as she finished her taco.
By the time Will returned with the napkin for Natalie, everyone's beepers began to ring, and Maggie came outside running to them.
"Shooting in a movie theater. Mass casualties. About to get crazy. EMT four minutes out," Maggie announced.
"Check that they're here," Dr. Halstead said as the ambulance pulled up. "All right everyone let's go," Dr. Vega said as they all started rushing back to the E.D.
While running to the E.D., she ran into Conner, who was throwing away the food he had ordered. Looking up at him, she apologized. He said, "Don't worry," and they dashed into the hospital to prepare for the incoming patients.
...
"Lucy Simms, 34, unresponsive Flaccid, agonal breathing. Tubed her without drugs," Brett said wheeling in Mrs. Simms on the gurney.
"The boy hurt?" Dr. Vega asked
"He was never touched. Mom was literally a human shield," Jessica said holding the boy in her arms. Mavis and Conner started working on Lucy when they got her into trauma room 2.
"On my count, One, Two, three," Dr. Rhodes said as they all lifted Mrs. Simms off the gurney and onto the hospital bed.
Mrs. Simms began coding so Conner got leverage and started chest compressions. while April was bagging her.
"Slide over so I can needle the left chest," Dr. Vega said to April as she opened a needle, she had grabbed from behind her.
"Hold compressions," she said. Conner then removed his hands and Mavis stuck the needle in her chest. The air began to woosh out. Mavis throws the back of what was on the needle behind her.
Mrs. Simms's stats started to rise. "How long was she down?" Dr. Vega asked.
"23 minutes," April said. "Let's hope she'll wake up Mavis looked at Conner.
"Let's get a chest tube in her and then get her up to CT. We'll take it from there." Dr. Rhodes said.
...
The shooter was brought in, and Conner had taken him up to Surgery. Sam had stopped by to see if Lucy had any sign of movement or brain activity. Mavis walked over to the room.
"We got a miracle?' she asked Sam.
"Not today," he said looking at her monitor there was no activity.
"Catastrophic intracranial hemorrhage. Too many kicks," he said.
"God this should have never happened," Dr. Vega sighed.
"You want a why people suck. That's why," Dr. Abrams said while ungloving his hands. Then leaving the room.
"Yup," Mavis sighed walking out as well.
...
Mrs. Simms' husband agreed to donate his wife's organs. The E.D. became noticeably calmer. Mavis sent April to check on another patient who had been waiting for a while.
April was taking her blood pressure. while Mavis was checking her chart. "You look very islandl-y. Are you sure you're not Jamaican?" the patient asked April.
"Yes, I am sure," April said. "Well, you look like the girl who cleans my house," the elderly woman said, Mavis, glared at her when she said that, then at April.
"Mrs. Kovach, I'm Dr. Vega. Says you were in the movie theater."
"Oh, no I just said that so I wouldn't have to wait," Mrs. Kovach laughed and shook her head. "You see all those people out there."
Mavis was left speechless for a moment just looking at her. "So, just the headaches, then?"
"Oh, I get tired sometimes, and I cough a lot, and I don't always remember where I put my things."
"Bring me a cup of Chamolie tea, will you, dear?" she smiled up at April. "Oh, I will let your server know, Ma'am."
"150 over 90," April said to Mavis once she finished taking Mrs. Kovach's blood pressure.
"Let's get a CBC, CMP, EKG, and CXR," Mavis said.
"Your symptoms are pretty varied, Mrs. Kovach. Once we get your lab results back..."
"Who's that?" Mrs. Kovach pointed behind mavis cutting her off. Mavis looked over her shoulder behind her.
"Dr, Choi?" she arched her brow looking forward again.
"Perfect," Mrs. Kovach said. "I want him."
"Excuse me?"
"Oh, no offense, dear. The Orientals make the best doctors. it's their math skills," she explained.
"Right," Dr. Vega just smiled.
...
Erin and Valerie went over to Med to question Mr. Miller about the shooting. Unfortunately, the kid he shot was a prankster who mistook his leaf blower for a gun.
Mavis noticed Erin and Valerie as they were leaving the hospital. "Valerie?" Mavis approached the two of them as they were leaving.
"Hey," Valerie hugged her. "You guys came questioning the suspect?" Mavis said.
"Yeah but turns out the kid was just carrying a leaf blower. Mr. Miller mistook it for a gun and shot him."
"Wow, poor guy," "are you guys gonna charge him?" Dr. Vega asked.
"No, he has a license to concealed carry. He thought his life was in danger. the prankster Peter Wallace is another story he could face some serious time" Lindsay said.
"If he lives," Mavis said.
"This is Dr. Mavis Vega," Valerie introduced her.
"Vega?" Lindsay tilted her head.
"My sister, Mavis this is Erin I work with her in intelligence."
"Nice to meet you," Mavis said.
Same here Erin said.
"I'll see you guys later then," Mavis said and walked off as her sister and Erin left the E.D.
...
Ethan was walking by "Oh, Dr. Choi," Mavis grabbed his attention as they started walking beside each other.
"So, her name's Gertrude Kovach. 72 years old presented with general discomfort, fatigue, headaches, forgetfulness," Dr. Vega explained walking to her room as Ethan finished putting on his white lab coat.
"Dementia?"
"No, she knows exactly what she is saying," Mavis said as they both reached her room.
"Are you sure you don't mind?" Mavis asked.
"No worries. Always glad when someone gets it right," Dr. Choi said then walked in with Mavis beside him she had a smile on her face.
"Oh, good. Finally," Mrs. Kovach said the moment she saw Ethan.
"My assistant, Dr. Vega," Dr. Choi said pushing the iPad over to her. she grabbed it while her face dropped the moment he said it... "Showed me your blood work."
"Your ACE and calcium levels are high, and your chest x-rays revealed the lymph nodes along your lungs are enlarged," Dr. Choi said.
"It could be symptomatic of something serious, but before we go there, let's do a biopsy and see what comes back," he explained.
"Oh, thank you, Doctor. I knew you'd be the one to help me," she shook Ethan's hands.
"You're too kind, but humility is the solid foundation of all virtues," he said backing up out of the room.
Ethan removed his white coat as soon as he walked out. I'm sure you've been waiting for that moment for a long time. said Dr. Vega.
"And really? Confucious? You're Korean."
"All the same to her. and I will admit I got a bit of a kick out of calling you, my assistant."
"But it won't happen again. Call me after you do the biopsy and make a diagnosis. So I can take the credit," Dr. Choi said then walked away.
"Haha," Mavis smirked.
...
Mavis ultimately had Will take over the case with Gertrude. Peter the movie theater prankster ended up needing a liver transplant. He made it. Mr. Miller passed away. He took his own life by stepping in front of a car.
Mavis grabbed her belongings and walked to her car. She saw Conner in the distance and was about to call out to him when she noticed Dr. Zanetti approached him, and the two of them took off together.
When she saw the two of them, she remembered what Natalie had said to her earlier while they were eating. Hovered inside her head. Seeing them together bothered her. Mavis, on the other hand, didn't understand why. She and Conner weren't close. She shook it off and went home.
