Chapter 45
AN: Part 2 - added 08/22/2023
Part 1 - 07/09/2023
The bomb is real. That was loud but it wasn't as powerful as the others. Were those from outside or were they a result of the first blast? Whatever it was that just exploded, it caused the ceiling to tremble. Nothing is falling off yet. But with only the flashlight from the cell phone, it's hard to see if there are any leaks or cracks. The floor feels safe to walk on but better hurry in case this can't hold. Somewhere must have been damaged. What's that smell? It's not gas. It's not perfume. It's…fucking bastard. He's been lying all along. This isn't just a tunnel. It's a replica of that damn house in Molokai with the underground hideout. With others around, this isn't the time to ask why he lied. Besides, with the drug in her system, she doesn't have the energy too. How far is the exit? There is an exit, isn't there? He's not planning to stay here until the coast is clear, is he? Fire can be put out in an hour or two. It would take more than a week to clear out the rubble and it's freezing in here. Where are they going? Going straight should get us further away from the house. That door cannot be the exit. "Hey"
"sshh"
Who's going to be able hear that? Noises are everywhere. No one will be able to hear us unless the exit is behind that door. (gasp) It's not. It's a room but unlike the one in Molokai, this one doesn't have a bed. It has capsule-like incubators and they're not empty. I was right. She is experimenting on coma patients. What else could it be? This isn't a hospital so what the hell are they all doing here?
"What the hell"
What? Lucy moves to where Jake is as fast as her weak legs allow her to. Oh my god. That's…Jack? He's back from hell. How?
"What happened? Why is she here?"
There can only be one reason why Brie said that. Lucy moves to the next capsule to see for herself. The window on the capsule is hazy but it's clear enough to tell that's not Brooke. Who's that? Finding out can wait since Aria is looking at the last one like she recognized someone she knows. Ohh…god...no, can't be..."nnno"
"Get up. Get up!"
Lucy tried to see who Adalyn is crying for, then realized that voice doesn't belong to Adalyn after her eyes opened to the uncomfortable noise that suddenly appeared which had the same effect as a fingernail scratching on a chalkboard. "I'm up!" That familiar scent is now even stronger than before. Potatoes? "What time is it?" 9:30! How the heck did he manage to get up so early after all the wine he drank last night? "Uhh Jesus" The room suddenly became so much brighter, sunglasses are needed. That seems deliberate. They're laughing.
Lucy didn't apologize for getting up late since he should be expecting it. It's not the first day but it takes time to get used to even if it is just a 4 hour difference. He hasn't been here that long either but it seems that he is able to get used to a lot of things. Since when did he start caring so much about what he eats? Butter is fattening. Cheese is too. Breakfast potatoes can be. As long as it's not a lot, it's fine. "Is there a pill for that?" That would be great if there is. Pineapple is delicious. Allergic reaction can lead to death. A glare like that can't be from the pineapple. "What?"
"You remember?"
Lucy wished she can but nope, not everything. It was the way he let out a small smile after putting a fresh cube of pineapple into his mouth as if it's the first time he tasted it which somehow caused her to remember. Sometimes that happens and it can happen at any time…just like now. It's just a casual movement but it brought back many memories, moments with different women and they were all doing the same thing, pouring coffee into the cup with a smile, then leaving without saying anything. This time, she's not sure if the blink is intentional. It might not be but his question(How long you're going to be here?) is since he waited until they're alone.
Lucy continued eating while aware that he doesn't like it since he's glaring again. It could be a few weeks or months. It depends.
"She asked me what happened, why you're here."
Why does that sound so familiar? Oh. It's not just things. Sometimes memory is triggered by what was said. This time it's not memory of the distant past. It's familiar because it happened in the dream. She said that, not Brie.
"I told her you've been here before and you want to see if it'll help you remember."
Well, that's not a lie. It's not entirely true though.
"But she thinks you got dumped."
Whaaat? So she thought I was drinking because I got dumped? It does look that way. She's not entirely wrong but she's 100 percent wrong about this place.
The clear white sky is so bright, it hurts to look at it with the naked eye. Tears are uncontrollably coming out. It's so cold, the face can still feel it underneath the fake beard but the thick layers of clothing helped. The land with the green and partially covered snow, the hazy mountains in the distance and the rainbow that arched over the waterfall did bring back memories but nothing new. Only those with no pain and worries would find this place peaceful.
"AHHHHHHHH!"
The view is magnificent but it seems that she's the only one who doesn't like it. She can scream all she wants but it's not going to make the problems go away. She should know she's lucky to be alive. The outcome could've been worse than just a change of identity. The mistakes she made were so stupid, it showed that she still has the mind of the 18 year old, acting without thinking all the way thru. The experienced Lucy would never have gone into that house. What was she thinking? Now it seems like her overconfidence is again getting in the way. "What're you doing?" The ground is still wet. One slip can pull her over the edge of the cliff.
"I fucked up. Anthony. I…fucked up."
That's not what she said last night. She said the only reason she stayed in that house was to see what Doc was up to. She said she never feared for her life. The only surprises were being told that Brooke has a sister, Brooke is still alive, and Schaeffer showing up with a cockamamie story about how Brooke was taken. She knew it wasn't true but the video of an unconscious Brooke made his explanation seem possible. It's possible because she wanted to believe that it is so she continued to play along until she realized she had been drugged. No harm done though. She said. That arrogant behavior from last night was just a façade. It did seem convincing but only to those who don't know what she was like after she got dumped. If she could remember, she probably wouldn't be feeling this way again. "Would you feel better if I hit you?"
Lucy wasn't expecting that but wished it would. A reminder of what happened years ago with the one night stand doesn't make her feel any better. That was a setup. She killed herself. That wasn't his fault. She's not the only one? It's not surprising to hear that he fucked up more than a few times that led to deaths of those who worked for him but to his lover? When did this happen? He's not allergic to pineapples? He just stopped eating them because his lover died after having a poisoned Fantasy Island cocktail in a pineapple that was meant for him? Oh shit. He must have been keeping this to himself because this doesn't trigger any memories. Who did it? Lucy didn't ask because she thought that's what he would say next. He didn't and instead made it more confusing. He had thought it was poisoned and only found out that it wasn't until a few months ago? That makes no sense. How could he not know it was an allergic reaction that killed her? Did the medical examiner make a mistake? Lucy again didn't ask because she just realized why he didn't say much about the intruders in his house in Hawaii other than they're amateur burglars. It's because the guy who was responsible for letting those amateurs in, the guy who made all his security team sick that day, was part of his security team. That guy had another motive other than stealing. That guy hated him because he's his ex? Holy cow. She transitioned into a man? No wonder he didn't recognize her. That makes sense but for a woman to do that just to get revenge, that makes no sense. She must have issues. No sane person would do that. Someone like that shouldn't be let go either. Just because she denied putting poison into the drink, it doesn't mean she didn't. She didn't poison him now because she needed money. "You can't trust her."
"c'mon" Anthony led the way back without holding her since she's following.
"She'll be back and the next time, she'll want more than just money." Why is he not listening? "She's going to come back to drug you, torture you, then urinate in your mouth. Did she change down there too?" What's so funny? That's not a joke. "Does Faith know?" If she doesn't, this would change her mind in staying.
"Why?"
Oh my god. "You didn't tell her?" Having to witness a burglary is frightening. Having to worry about what her boss's crazy exes would do next would give her PTSD. But "she has the right to know." That is a stupid reason. No nurse would want to work for him if they know the truth. But this isn't right. "you're putting her in danger" Okay. That's stupid too. Without him, they would've found her months ago. Brain cells don't work well in the freezing cold. Oh. That same glare now brought back memories. He did that when he was told to stop wasting time chasing after the megastar. "All right, I'm not going to tell her." This is a safer place to be even though it's cold. This is a good place to get away from it all, for them anyways. Who's calling? Is it Faith? Is she getting bored?
"You didn't tell him?" Anthony said before handing her the phone.
It's not Faith. It's Scud and he's pissed because he just found out. "I thought you knew." That's not a lie. Jake was there. That's how Anthony found out. Amy was there so how should I know neither of them told him. He doesn't need to know what happened inside the house anyways. All he needs to know is that no one should be looking for us because they know what happened to the key and they think we're all dead. "Is she all right?" He must know by now why Nadia was told to go see Amy even though that wasn't the original plan.
"What the hell did you do?"
She didn't tell him?
Almost a year has passed. It's hard to believe how much has changed with the world, the society, and the one who confidently said 11 months ago "I'll be fine. Don't worry about me." Considering what she has been thru, she does look fine, physically. But mentally? More time is needed to assess. One thing is certain is though, she doesn't need antidepressants. No one with depression would wake up at 8, jog for an hour on the treadmill, and would still be in the mood to go out to take care of someone else even when it's snowing.
"I thought you said" Nadia trailed off after realizing that Amy didn't make a mistake. This is the right room. Very sophisticated. That is Will inside.
"It's the only way to keep her alive." Less germ, less possibility to getting infected. She knew Nadia would be surprised and not just with the setup of this room but didn't expect her to ask a question that shows how she feels. "You don't agree?"
"I…I don't know." It would be better to respond with this since she doesn't know Will enough to know what she would want but she quickly realized why Amy is looking at her without commenting. It's because Amy just answered her previous question with a question. It's not her decision to make either. It's Lucy's.
"Whatever it takes, don't let her go. She said."
Nadia nodded in understanding. Keeping Will alive this way might be cruel but she also understood why Lucy did so. But why did she ask her to take care of Will? "Is this what you do everyday?" Doing this everyday would be depressing. It's good to know that she has hired help. "I can help if you need me…massaging, I mean." Everything else would require a professional. It wasn't meant to be funny so she's happy to get a smile and words of gratitude and appreciation but that all ended during dinner time. She doesn't regret asking because everyone wants to know including CJ which is odd since she was at the house and she's been living here with Amy for more than a few months so how is it possible she doesn't know what Lucy did that got her thinking about divorce.
It's nice to have Nadia here doing the cooking but it's really frustrating to see how clueless she can be. "Did you ask her?" No? "Why not?"
"She's not going to tell me."
That's a good answer but why isn't she getting it? Is it because she knows Lucy would do anything for me so cheating, in her mind, is not a possibility? "You want to know what happened?" One with faded blonde, the other with brown hair. They look nothing alike but now they do. They're both nodding at the same time like they've been waiting for this for a long time. "They didn't want me there. She didn't want me there. It will fail if she get distracted. So I said okay. After I got to the door, she swore at Doc again."
That moment changed her mind so she closed the door and stood there so Lucy wouldn't be able to see her. There's no way in hell I'm going to leave her with them. That's what she was thinking at that moment. Doc didn't like it but continued since time was running out. All the lights were out except for the flashlight from the cell phone. It wasn't the first time she saw how hypnosis is done. She had seen it when she used to be a DEB. She heard how Doc was able to do so from Aria's spy recorder. The instructions to get Lucy to relax were the same. Some of the questions were the same but she later realized what she missed from the audio spy recorder. Hypnosis technique involves using speech not kissing, not touching. At that moment, she wanted to ask 'Is this necessary?' but was afraid to make any noise. It was difficult to watch. Somehow it was working. Lucy was responding to every question asked. Doc didn't ask about Brooke's will. What Doc asked made her realize why Lucy didn't want her to be there.
They spent months in different countries. It is possible that Brooke could have her own reasons for visiting certain places other than sightseeing. Could it be in Bulgaria? Nobody wanted to go there except Brooke. Maybe she hid the key in one of the hotels? Maybe she gave hints and Lucy didn't catch it. Finding out what they said when they're alone is important but is it necessary to find out what they said during their moments of intimacy? At that moment, she almost couldn't control herself from putting a stop to it. If she had, she never would've found out what else Lucy was keeping from her. Many times, Lucy said Brooke didn't leave her anything. A letter is something. She said nothing happened. Fulfilling her ex's last wish is far from nothing!
"Ssso-" CJ trailed off after her hand was held firmly again while wondering why Nadia is preventing her from talking. Almost a minute has passed since the former blonde agent stopped talking after she said she didn't leave because she didn't trust them. So why?
"He somehow got the bomb off. We went into a secret tunnel." Amy finishes washing the plate and puts it back onto the dish rack. There's no need to continue since they both look confused especially Nadia. "I'm not going to tell you what she did but I can tell you she didn't ask you to be here for me." Get it now? She should since she hasn't been the same since Holly left and Cocoa's passing away made it worse. That's what Janet said. It would take years to get over her. She would never have believed that Holly is dead. This proves it. That was Lucy's stupid plan which didn't take much to change her mind.
"She told me to take care of you."
Oh Nadia. She's so lovable. It hurts to see her so gullible like Annie. "Do I look like I need to be taken care of?" Why is CJ nodding too? CJ is here because she said she doesn't have anywhere to go now that she broke it off with Bryan. ZJ can't be here because Lucy thinks the color of her skin would cause issues with the neighbors in this white neighborhood. She's not wrong. People are more sensitive now. Society is even more effed up than before. But even without ZJ, she should know "I'm fine. I don't need to be taken care of."
"She told me to look after you." CJ said.
Look after? Months ago, Brie had said that Hope was hired to look after her. In her case, it means to protect. In this case, it doesn't sound like that's what CJ meant. "What exactly did she say?" Amy asked.
"Sit down"
I don't need to sit down. Okaay fine. Nadia is acting very strange. Her question is too. She should know I got my memory back so why is she still asking if I remembered something a moment ago? I was just thinking. At least CJ isn't wasting time asking questions and she's not holding back either. She's cursing like what Blake does when she doesn't agree. Blake isn't here but if she were, she would've swore back at CJ for comparing her to the suicide bomber who tried to kill Doc. CJ would deserve it too since she thinks I'm crazy too. She might not have used that word but psychotic breakdown means crazy. Brainwashed like the cult followers means crazy. The mad mob at the capitol is…absolutely nuts! Lucy thinks I'd go crazy? She never said that. She agreed with Petrie's theories though but theories aren't fact. "She said that?"
"She's just worried since you had been…and you have been…we all are so we just want to make sure you don't have any of those symptoms."
Had been? Have been? Amy understood even without the words but not this. "What symptoms?"
"you know, when you"
CJ just made an explosion gesture with her hands. That means blow up. Since when did I…oh, she heard the argument. It wasn't meant for her to hear. All couples have arguments. She would explode too if her partner decided to leave one day for someone else. Was it wrong to say Adalyn has other intentions other than the key? It wasn't just a kiss. It wasn't a pretense. She was a willing participant and it wasn't the first time. Was it wrong to say
"Brooke's dead! Why can't you let it go?"
It was. It's partially her fault. She trusts Adalyn more than me. After Lucy left with an apology, her anger gradually subsided when she realized why that moment looked so familiar. It's because she once said the same thing to Lucy as Kristin when Lucy won't stop looking for Benjamin Couric to get revenge for her. Lucy had the same regretful look as then and now her apology makes more sense...in a way...not entirely. So she's not looking for Brooke? She left because of me? She thinks I killed them?
Lucy had always said that Doc was testing on coma patients and turning them into her own slaves which is ridiculous. But after that day, it didn't seem impossible because Doc was able to get Lucy to do things that she wouldn't have done if she had not been drugged and hypnotized. But according to Dr. Hazel, hypnotherapy cannot change a person to a totally different person especially the ones who are strong willed and stubborn. But what about amnesiacs? That was Petrie's question and a darn good one because Dr. Hazel's response, even though she said there's no scientific proof, caused Petrie to question the rumor she heard about Mr. P's boss. Mr. P did die from a heart attack. His boss did have cancer but was his death a suicide or was he murdered because he was getting close to finding out who killed the doctors. There were two of them and one of them knew Doc so it is possible they were killed by the same people who wanted the key...or it could be their patients. There are so many crazies out there nowadays. It might not have anything to do with Doc's experiment. Unsatisfied customers attacking their doctor is not unheard of. That's what Petrie said but now it seems like she was holding back information because Lucy told her too. Since when did they find out the dead doctors are linked to Lisa Lane?
"You okay?"
There goes Nadia again, so concerned, so caring, so protective. It's obvious she didn't want CJ to disclose that and CJ must think I'm as naive as Nadia.
"If that's what she thinks, then why would she ask you to be here?" The question is for both of them but more so for Nadia. There's no need to wait for a response. She should now know Lucy's true intention. "c'mon Kato, time for a walk"
"woof"
Part 2 - added 08/22/2023
Faith is bored but as long as she's not by herself, she doesn't seem to mind the cold and going to the same places where she had been in the past few weeks. It's obvious she has done a lot of research since she has been acting like a tour guide. Since when did she become this talkative? She wasn't shy or quiet but she never acted like she's in charge. And why is he acting so weird? For as long as she can remember, Anthony doesn't like the cold and has no interest in scenic places especially where the grasslands and stony grounds are dirty and wet with snow. So why does he still want to go to the waterfalls when there's no need for him to do so? It's not the same waterfall but still. Boredom cannot be the only reason.
"Have you been to this?" Faith asked.
Blue Lagoon? That does look familiar but only because she has seen the video the last time she was here. Ace had wanted to book the hotel there which could've prevented a lot of problems if Niki had listened to him.
"Want to go?"
Lucy again shook her head and continued eating until Faith asked "you're not afraid, are you?" which sounds very familiar and odd at the same time because the Faith she knows never talks this way. "Afraid of what?"
"You have to take a shower first without a swimsuit. But it says here, there are shower stalls with doors, no hooks so-"
"no" Lucy interrupted without looking at her which is rude but it didn't stop Faith from continuing with her plan. Blue Lagoon next week since it's too cold now. Crystal Ice cave this Friday before it gets too warm? That doesn't sound like a suggestion. That sounds like a command.
"Look at this. Isn't this beautiful?"
A cave surrounded by blue ice is beautiful but that's because it's a brochure. The picture is edited to attract tourists. It never shows the bad part of it. "It's dangerous." Lucy didn't continue since Faith just abruptly stood up, looking annoyed. What? It is. "There could be poisonous snakes, insects and-"
"Stop eating that. That's bad for you. It'll slow you down…here too." Faith said as she pointed to her own temple. "Alcohol will make it worse. You too. Don't drink anymore. Eat this. It's healthier."
Lucy stopped eating not because Faith said so but because Faith took her fried seafood platter and glass of wine with her. Since when did she become this bossy? Everyone changes but she was talking like someone who wants to see everything before her life ends, kind of like Brooke. "Is she okay?"
"Here, have some peanuts" Anthony said after tossing it on the dining table.
That is a bag of peanuts. When did he get that? Hey, that's not funny. It is to him. He must have been waiting for this moment. Ohh. Nothing else looks familiar but this does. It's not just his laugh. It's the way he was joking around earlier. He was the same way, acting like a different person when he went after the megastar. It's now obvious that he too must have thought that going to the museum was a bad idea and didn't say anything not just because Faith wouldn't have listened. It could be because he saw it as an opportunity to make Faith see how funny he can be. Many men would be embarrassed to go inside the Phallological Museum but he wasn't and he made Faith laugh with every question he was asked especially when they were looking at a cast of a real human's penis, he confessed without being asked that all men(the sane ones) think it's gross too including himself.
"You like her?" There's no need to hide it so why the sudden change to seriousness. Lucy didn't get an answer but instead got the same question back which is weird. It's a simple question but it can't be that simple.
"Did something happened?"
And there it is. It could be the overly concern that Faith was showing for the past few days since she was clinging on like what couples do when they start dating. But he should know Faith did that because it's cold and to keep me from leaving the places where I didn't think would help like the Phallogical Museum. Or maybe it's the hug. But he should know that was necessary because Faith wasn't listening and was getting too close to the waves in the Black Sand Beach which is known to be dangerous since a few have died after being swept away into the sea. But that happened 2 days ago. Maybe someone is talking behind my back? Can't be Faith so it must be...Jake.
Many unexpected things happened on the Eurail trip. Bad weather was one of them. It wasn't pouring but the sky was cloudy and it was drizzling, on and off. No one wanted to go sightseeing again since everybody was tired from the day before except for Brooke who agreed to stay inside the hotel after Faith made a suggestion to play cards which became boring very quickly until Jake magically turned an Ace of spades into a King of hearts with the flick of his finger. It was that day he opened up about himself which was quite funny because Brooke's purpose for asking him to join the game was to prove that she was right. She said she already knew he's gay because his beard and brows were always neatly trimmed, his fingernails were cleaner than most men, and sometimes his fingers moved like women do which she didn't realize it was a result of practicing card tricks. The conversation then led to more laughter after Faith skillfully changed the topic from gay to showing off her knowledge in science by using science terms like molecules, dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin aka the love hormone to explain what triggers attraction. Hormones like human emotions can be controlled, she said, which didn't make a whole lot of sense not even after the demonstration but it was funny. Everyone was laughing. That was Faith's intention. At least, that's what it looked like at that time. Faith's demonstration, she later realized, was actually for Brooke. And now, she realized Jake must have misinterpreted the kissing and touching as more than just a demonstration to show that feelings and emotions can be controlled.
"So? Did you?"
"What'd ya think?"
"Then why don't you want her to know you're already married?"
"sshh" Lucy quickly takes a glance at the door to make sure Faith isn't there, then regretted shushing him since he has that same pissed look as Amy had when she left. "The more she knows, the more questions she'll have. The more she'll regret working for you." What? What's that look for? It's not a threat. It's just a warning. Faith isn't stupid. Faith will eventually figure out what he used to do and how many women he's been with so he better be prepared to explain if he is serious about her. "Go ahead, tell her, see what she says." No? Thought so.
"Then you better start acting like you are."
It must be the joking around earlier in the museum. He wasn't the only one making Faith laugh. What else could it be in that 10 feet tall container of clear liquid? She could've responded with whale but the first thing that came to her mind was Moby Dick. It wasn't her intention to make Faith laugh. If he saw that as flirting, then that's his problem. If he thinks I'm in his way, then that's understandable. Now that many have come out of the closet, many are no longer afraid of showing their true feelings. But it's odd that he would be interested in Faith. She's not his type.
"So? You like her?" Lucy asked again in case he's asking for Scud since Scud always wanted to know who the other woman is because in his mind, nothing else could get Amy this pissed off other than cheating. "Does she know?" Nothing shows that she does and it's now obvious he has not made any moves yet since he's ignoring all the questions. What the heck is he waiting for then? On a second thought, "Don't tell her. It'd be awkward. She'd definitely want to go back home." Sorry. Truth hurts. She's young and capable. She's not that type that would do anything for money. But he still has a chance. "Want my advice?"
"I want you take care of your problem and go home before she decides to leave you."
Sometimes, he can be so understanding. Then other times, like now, he can be such an ass. He's not wrong though but since Faith is coming, she didn't continue but deliberately exhaled loudly to show him that she's frustrated too which he should already know. He might not know everything but she did expect him to know that she's doing the best she can. If he doesn't want to be here, he can leave anytime. All he has to do is make up an excuse if Faith is unwilling to go with him. There's no reason why Faith wouldn't because she said it herself, she has already seen most of the tourist attractions and doesn't want to be here when daylight hours get longer and that's going to happen in a couple of weeks. All he has to do is take a dip with her in the Blue Lagoon and take a hike to the Crystal Ice cave, then she wouldn't have any more reasons to stay.
"Look at this." Faith said after getting the webpage to appear on the phone.
Or maybe not. Faith also wants to see the Aurora Borealis aka Northern Lights. "tonight?"
"Can you get it to appear in the morning? Yes tonight. It's a natural phenomenon. Tonight will be the last chance otherwise we'll have to come back in 4 months."
Geez. What happened to her? She's never this snarky. With that type of attitude, no wonder she's still single. At least now, Anthony should know he's wrong and it looks like he just realized it since he left with the dinner plate, leaving Faith to make all the plans once again.
"Pick one."
That sounds like a command again. What's on her mind this time? The last time, the outcome was a lot of laughter because the game was similar to Truth or Dare except there was only dare and the questions were written down by each one before the game started and the loser had to blindly pick one out. It was hilarious because Faith did the dare without complaints. It's just a butt. Everyone's the same. No big deal. She said. If Jake were there, she wouldn't casually flash her bare butt. Creating laughter wasn't her only intention. It was that day, she said, she realized what caused Brooke's broken heart. One kiss proved it. Brooke's reaction proved it. So what is she trying to prove this time? Lucy picked one while knowing she's not going to have to kiss her like the last time because those aren't cards. They're pamphlets.
"Look familiar?"
It's a waterfall. They all look the same. "no" Lucy is still not sure why after being told to pick another. One waterfall already brought back bad memories. The others will only do the same. If she expects me to go to all these places, it's not happening. It's not just too cold. It's not going to help and this one definitely won't. Who would-
"oh wait, that's not…hey"
Oops. Some of the pamphlets are now on the floor. Lucy didn't apologize for snatching the pamphlet back without asking first since this is important. She quickly left the dining table to show it to Anthony who's typing on the phone. It's rude to be standing over him while he's texting but this is really important.
"What?"
Maybe it's old age. The word isn't that small though. Faith wouldn't know so she again pointed to the word on the pamphlet along with lip movement. Get it now? He's rolling his eyes so does that mean he disagrees or doesn't get it? Ohh. He got it. He's right too. The hand gesture with the finger and thumb on the forehead stands for Loser but in this case, it probably means Lunatic for me and the letter L. That is an L not an i. Lucy went back to sit down at the dining table after getting the same question from Faith as before and only responded with the same "no" since she couldn't come up with a logical explanation without telling her the truth. It doesn't look familiar. The name does.
"that's active, you know"
Active volcano? That is more dangerous than the Black Sand Beach. Who would go there? There's no way then but there is an ice cave too. But still, Katla is not Katia.
"You want to go there?"
Would she think I'm going crazy too? Probably since Brooke had never been here before so there's no reason to think that the key would be here. Besides, she already thinks I'm crazy for wearing a male disguise everyday especially now when it's dark and almost everyone's wearing a scarf.
"Look, isn't it beautiful?"
I'm looking. So the sky is black with shades of green. So what? There's no flying saucer. That would be more interesting. How long? Is she waiting for a shooting star? Inside the van is not as cold but still. Without the engine on, it will be. This is getting ridiculous. She's going out. Lucy had no intention of following until she noticed Anthony isn't since he's busy talking on the phone in the back of the van. There's no need to stop Faith from going out though since all she wants to do is take pictures. This is one side of her that hasn't changed. She loves taking pictures even when there's nothing special about it. It's just a lighthouse with green gaseous particles hovering over it and-...Lucy quickly grabbed her forearm after realizing where else she wants to go.
"C'mon. Don't be afraid."
"It might get flooded later." The wind and current aren't as strong as it was in the Black Sand Beach but there's no way of telling how high the tide will be in half an hour. The walkway to the lighthouse looks clear now but it could be completely covered later. "uhh, I really don't think it's a good idea." If she thinks she can get her way by pushing me from behind, it's not going to work. "We'll go tomorrow when it's not dark. Okay?" Okay. Looks like she gave up but why is she stilling holding on?
"look"
Lucy directed her attention to where Faith is looking at and was instantly reminded of Brooke after getting a question because Brooke had once spoken the same words but it's on the balcony of the hotel in Venice where it has a view of the water and a lighthouse in the distance surrounded by water just like that one. There is a mysterious blinking light. That does look like the Murano Lighthouse. She sure has a good memory. If Brooke were here, she too would want to go up there. (sigh)
"I forgive you."
Faith must have heard. She never blamed Brooke or me but like everyone that's in her situation would, she has regrets because it wasn't just Brooke's kindness that led her to making the decision to take the job. It's also because she was interested in finding out what was causing her mysterious on/off illness and the desire to travel around the world because that's what Brooke had wanted to do. And now, she's making the best of the situation that she got herself into.
"Don't blame yourself."
(sigh) It's difficult not to. Words of comfort is appreciated though. Brooke said the same thing. No one knows how this feels except Faith. No one understands Brooke more than she does.
"love you, always"
I know. Brooke said that more than a few-. Lucy immediately turned herself around after pulling Faith's arms off her waist. If she had done it a few seconds later, she might not have been able to prevent Faith from falling on the hard surface of the rocky shore. "Hey" Lucy didn't notice before but now realized that Anthony must have been standing nearby this entire time because how else was he able to get here so fast.
"What happened?" Anthony asked.
An explanation will have to wait since she's not sure herself. "Hey" Lucy tried again while holding Faith firmly in her arms. This time it worked. The fainting lasted less than 10 seconds but there's a need to be concerned even if she doesn't seem to be.
"I'm fine. It's just cold and low blood" Faith didn't continue since no one is listening. They're all moving including the driver who was asked to start the engine. Heat will help. Water will too. Faith took the bottle from Anthony. A self adhesive heat pad is a good idea. When did she get this? What's the candy for? "I'm fine. I don't need a doctor." Faith said then realized she needed to say more to convince them.
A decrease blood flow to the brain is known to cause fainting. Faith is a nurse so no one here knows more than her. No one knows more about herself than her. She's not surprised because it happened before. The first time happened when she was about 7 years old when she was walking up the stairs. If it wasn't for her aunt who caught her since she was 2 steps behind her, the outcome would have been broken bones or worse. The second time occurred in school when she was standing with a lot of clothing on for too long in a room full of people. That happened because of fatigue and overheating. No one caught her that time and it gave her six grade teacher quite a scare. This time, it could be from all the walking in the last few days, the excitement, the different places, and the change in weather. It's very possible it's this area along with the green gaseous particles that caused her blood pressure to suddenly drop. She said. But as logical as her explanation is, it still doesn't entirely make sense. Should I ask? She already has her eyes closed. Guess it can wait but looks like Anthony can't since he's speaking without sound after telling the driver to start driving back. It's dark inside the van but it's not difficult to figure out what he's saying even if no sound is coming out of his mouth. It's because he looks pissed and it's only 3 words and the last word begins with F. I too would like to know 'What the fuck.' Did you tell her I'm married? Lucy was surprised to get an answer immediately without having to repeat it since she also didn't make any sound. No? Well that's odd. It's odd that Faith said the same things that Brooke once did including 'love you, always' which sounded like she was referring to Brooke until the kiss happened. It's just a kiss below the earlobe but still, why did she do that? Why did she say 'She's waiting. Go back" afterwards? Not just once, she said 'go back' three times before she fainted. Why would she say that if she doesn't know about Amy? Even if she did figure it out, why would she say that when she had wanted to go to the lighthouse? That wasn't the right time. This isn't the right time to tell Anthony either since he's on the phone again. He probably would be happy to know that his chance of getting Faith is the same as it was before…or maybe not. If Faith can see his face now, she would probably be turned off. That's one seriously mean look. "What?" Lucy didn't get an answer until the van stopped in front of a hotel, the one that Bryan is staying in. No wonder he's more pissed than before. It's because Bryan messed up again. Last time, he failed to do a thorough background check on the trans-man, his ex, before hiring him thus giving him the opportunity to make his security team sick that night. This time, he failed to notice he was being followed. Everyone messes up once a while but this is unexpected because Anthony should not have made the decision by himself! "I'm not ready." Lucy said in frustration.
"What're you afraid of?"
Why do they keep saying that!
"Go take care of it now or I will."
Lucy quickly held onto his wrist to stop him from using the phone, then regretted since it prompted Faith to intervene. Faith can't know why. There's no need to tell her the truth. He didn't but seriously! Meeting with old friends would've been good enough. Meeting with an ex would give her the wrong idea. He's such an ass! But he's right about one thing. Even though it's not time yet, any man with patience can lose his shit when he's angry.
Cameras are everywhere. No one is in the hallway. Lucy knocked twice while knowing that the one behind the door would be Bryan. It is but she wasn't expecting to see Ein sitting on the floor, leaning against the couch with his hands tied behind his back and legs bounded and mouth stuffed with a towel. What's Jake doing here? Did he get caught too? "What happened?" Why Jake is whispering is beyond her until she heard the explanation. Oh crap. Hopefully he wasn't too loud and no one else heard. This is definitely not the right place to talk but it'll have to do but first, Bryan and Jake need to go since they already know more than they should. It's time to explain but first an apology is necessary. But the towel can't be removed yet. "I still don't remember." That's the truth. "I came back to help me remember." That's one of the reasons and now there is another. It didn't seem possible but now there are 2 possible places to look, the Katla Ice Cave and the top of the lighthouse where the blinking light is. "I needed to make sure you weren't lying." He should know why even if this isn't America. People are willing to do anything for money. "I needed to make sure you didn't make a mistake." There's still no proof that he didn't. "Why did you quit your job?" Not even a year, yet so much has changed. Jake did say he quit and the reason is because he's no longer interested but is that the truth? "Does it have anything to do with that jerk?" According to the internet, Iceland is considered to be one of the world's most LGBTQ friendly countries but that doesn't mean every workplace is so it's possible that jerk found out and outed him. "I'm going to take this out but please, be calm, not so loud. I'm not going to hurt you unless you force me to."
"What do you want from me?"
What? Lucy didn't expect her questions to be answered and certainly wasn't expecting this. "nothing"
"Then leave, leave Ezz alone."
"I would never hurt her."
"Then let me go. Leave us alone. Please."
What the heck is wrong with him? Now that he's not a cop, that fearless attitude he used to have is gone. Maybe being in this situation made him realize this is all he can do? He has changed a lot. With no income, no job, increase in debt, it can change a person's personality. It can drive a person to depression too. That's what Jake noticed after following him for 2 days which led him to make the decision to get closer since it's the only way to find out if he is having suicidal thoughts. Getting close to him wasn't the plan but she also doesn't blame Jake for doing so even though she knew that there's a high chance that Ein would find out. She just didn't expect Bryan to be the one that got caught and this soon. It has only been 2 weeks. Can't blame him though. Stalking without getting caught is more difficult in a small country.
"I told you. I'm not here for you or Ezz. But since you found out, do you need any help?" He might have lost his confidence but he still has integrity. "I can lend it to you. No interest, no deadline...for helping me…last time." What? That's not a look of gratitude. "I'm serious. No strings attached." It's time to take a few steps back since he's bigger and stronger and he might be able to break out of whatever it is his hands are tied with. "Okay. I'm leaving. They'll let you go. If you change your mind, let Jake know. Okay?" It's not going to be today. "And please remember, don't believe that jerk. Don't do anything stupid. I am not that guy. I just want to help." Lucy didn't wait for a response and wished she had ended the conversation sooner because then she would've been able to avoid being seen. What the hell. Bryan and Jake don't look one bit surprised so they must have known. Damn you Anthony! It's too late to do anything now other than go the other way. She's only here for Ein so-
"He wants me to take care of it if you don't." Jake said in a whisper.
What the eff. This is what happens when they don't work for you. Now it looks like this might not be Bryan's fault. It's Anthony's. He might have set this up. It's looking more and more obvious because Ezz is following Jake inside without questions. Her pissed off look means she's not thrilled to be here and not just because Jake is checking thru her handbag. What the hell is going on here? Is making sure she's clean necessary? Were they told to or were they being careful because they should know Ezz is as harmless as Faith even though Ezz looks more independent and more courageous like someone who's not afraid to stand up for herself. Coming here by herself proved it. But for someone who has a law degree, she sure is not too bright. Why is she telling Ein to go home by himself?
"No!"
This is a 5 star hotel. This is a big suite but the panoramic windows, walls and door might not be thick enough to prevent others in the next room from hearing so he better quiet down.
"Listen to me. It's not like that."
At least Ezz understood. But Ein still wants to leave. They can and they better hurry up and make a decision. Four guys and a woman in suite with one king size bed would give others the wrong -
"I still love him!"
Say…what? Ohh Ezz. She has the looks of an intelligent woman with the business suit on but she sure is dumb for falling for a guy who treated her like a prostitute. That's what Ein said to Jake earlier. That's why Jake had to shut Ein up with a towel because all it would take to make Ein see that he's wrong is by telling him the truth which he didn't have permission to do but now does. But why would Ein say that now not then? Did he recently find out? Prostitute meant she got paid for sex so there must be a misunderstanding since she doesn't look like that type that would. But sometimes, circumstances force people to do things that they never thought they would. Something must have happened. There's only one way to find out more. Lucy locked the door after telling Jake to stop being paranoid and leave. He can get another room, wait downstairs or go with Bryan and Ein but don't stand outside. Geez. Of course I know her confession was only to convince Ein to leave. I lost my memory not my mind. Only someone who has never been with a beautiful woman would get lost in that-
"Were you going to let him touch me?"
Lucy moved her eyes back up to those big dark brown angry eyes. A moment is needed to think of the question since she wasn't expecting that to be the first question. "No, of course not." That's the truth but it's also because she didn't know Bryan was planning to pat her down.
"So you were waiting to see if I would let him?"
This is what happens when you talk to a lawyer or used to be one. You get lots of questions. But it's good that she asked because now it's making more sense. The guy she was with could be a pimp. Get her to fall in love with him, then use her. That's what pimps do. But she doesn't look that naive. "I didn't think he would...he's new." Why did I say that? Explaining is admitting I'm that guy. Lawyers are so damn
"How long?"
Okay. This shows why she's no longer a lawyer. What the hell does that even mean? "How long what?"
"How long have you been watching me? How long are you staying this time?"
So it is Bryan's fault. He was assigned to follow her. She must have recognized him. That's probably why she was staring at Bryan from head to toe. A long stare would give him the idea that she was taking note of everything he's wearing, his body size, and every feature of his face even if his face is half covered. It's also a way to say 'I'm not afraid of you. I know what you look like so you better not do that again.' That's smart but being here alone in a hotel with a man who had treated her like a prostitute is stupid! It's time to tell her again. "I'm not here for you. I was just trying to see if you" Holy shit. Lucy successfully avoided the shoe that was about to hit her but failed to do so with the other one which doesn't hurt with the gloves. Catching it with bare hands would've. Clearly, she's hurt by that comment and is upset with the stalking too. What the hell is she saying? It's not English. Is it Icelandic? Whatever language it is, it's probably swearing.
"There's no guy. He's…not what you think. So don't."
Huhh? Ohh. She thinks I was checking to see if she has a boyfriend. But what guy? Bryan didn't say there was a guy. But if there's no guy, then why hesitate? Don't do anything to him. Oh I won't…unless he's a jerk like her ex.
"I'm serious. I don't want any problems."
She is serious, seriously frustrated. What happened the last time? "I won't." This should give her one less worry. Offering help for Ein will too. "Does he need help?" Ein has too much pride to ask for money. The honest ones always do and it seems that she's like him. She's not listening. She's getting a drink. Alcohol isn't going to solve problems. It will give her courage to ask for money though. Or maybe she's thinking of throwing that at me. She's looking at the wine glass for way too long. Nope. But she is blaming me. "How is it my fault?" It looks like she doesn't want to explain. That's one big gulp.
"I didn't tell him. He found out."
"Found out what?" Asking is the only way to find more about the guy but this is not working. Clearly, she doesn't want to talk about the past. The past is not going to solve problems. What she needs now is solutions. "Does he want to get out of here for awhile? I can arrange." Okay. She must be expecting it since she's not surprised. There's a nod and a smile too, small and short but still a smile. That's good. Maybe that guy is not as bad as Ein said. He did fall for the guy. "Anything else?" It wasn't meant to be rude but it is getting late. Anthony is probably waiting for an update. Jake must be either downstairs or got a room next door so before he bangs on the door like the last time, it's time to text…him. Where's the music coming from? Why did she just turned off all the lights except for one? Why is she closing the shades? It's a water view. No one else can see. Only a helicopter can. Why is she taking off her blazer? Oh…my…gawwd. She's definitely not in love with him. A woman only wears a sexy black garter lingerie set with thong and stockings underneath a business suit to a hotel for one reason only.
"Well? What you waiting for?"
Ohh Ezz. No wonder Ein said she was treated like a prostitute. She's looking like one. No one in love would stand against the panoramic window in a surrendering position with their back turned, wearing that and say that. Clearly, this isn't her first time. She came prepared. She's expecting to be-
"Fine. You win."
What? She sounds like Niki. Niki would give in but would never admit she lost and she definitely wouldn't know how to move her arms, legs, and hips to the beat of the music like a pole dancer except that's no pole. That's a chair, a very lucky chair. Is the thermostat broken? It's getting hot in here. With moves like that, it can trigger anyone's sexual desire, man or woman. If that won't, the way she's sitting on the chair now with her legs spread apart would. Manspreading is a man's way to show dominance and confidence. When a woman does it, the meaning is totally different. Why on earth would she do this? She's a lawyer. Even if she's not now, she shouldn't have to do this. Lawyers get paid well…unless...he has something she wants. That's it! He has videos of her. It has to be. That's what pimps do. That's why she was so upset about it the last time. She's a victim herself. Bastard. I'm going to find him. I'm going to make him regret- "argh!"
It's not the dim lighting. It's because the mind was so absorbed into her own thoughts and other things, it didn't have enough time to react. It's also because it wasn't expecting Ezz to suddenly lunge forward and jump on her.
"What's wrong with you?"
What's wrong with me! It's good to know her intention wasn't to hurt me but really? She has to be at least 120 pounds. No one would've been able to hold on to her and maintain balance, not even a man, unless he's expecting it. "uhh" Nothing's broken but the elbows hurt more than the butt and back of the head.
"Don't move."
Okay. It's getting hot in here anyway. Lucy allowed her black thick winter coat to be unzipped and decided to let her find out by herself since this is getting too difficult. It would take more than just words to convince those in a cult to believe that they are in a cult. She's not in a cult but she is manipulated to believe that there's no way out otherwise why would she came prepared dressed like that? Why won't she believe that she got the wrong guy? Why would she still help him the last time? It's not love. It's because you're afraid of him, isn't it?
"Roll towards me, bend both legs into a fetal position."
Lucy did as requested, then lifted her hip which instantly reminded her of the physical therapist who had her do the same thing after her back surgery to see how long she can hold it. It didn't last long because of the pain. This time, the butt dropped to the floor even faster but it's not because it hurts. It's because Ezz just grabbed the fake penis.
"Nothing broken. If you had landed on this, it would've."
She's not only harmless, she's also clueless. It wasn't a long grab but there's no way she couldn't tell the difference although the flight attendant did say it feels very real without any fabric around it. Should I just tell her? Where's she going? What's she looking for? If Jake were here, he would be treading carefully. There's no need to. This isn't a penthouse. This is a corner unit with an open floor plan and lots of space and windows. One look can see where everything is. There's the couch, coffee table, chairs, bar, telescope and that must be the way to the bathroom so this must be Good...Lord. It's not a desk or couch. It's a very big bed in the corner, hidden from view behind the long wooden stand with a vase of flowers on top of it.
"Are you just going to stand there?"
Lucy heard and understood but also couldn't get herself to turn around. She's not shocked by it but at the same time, she was hoping she's wrong. Ezz doesn't look like that type. She's not naked now but she has her legs wide opened, dangling on the edge and elbows leaning casually against the bed so no doubt, she came prepared to go all the way. Erotic dancing wouldn't be enough.
"I can't, not tonight."
Lucy understood the meaning behind it since she got that before several times from different women. Can't doesn't mean she cannot since she's still here. It could mean she can't stay overnight. It could also mean protection is needed. Sex can still happen. Apparently that includes- "You don't have to."
"I want to."
Lucy heard despite how loud her own heart is beating. She also knows that can't be true despite how convincing it sounds because no woman especially an educated woman wouldn't find this degrading. A woman would be willing for only one reason. Lucy takes a step back before picking up the phone since it has been ringing two times already. It's not Anthony. He's probably enjoying his time alone with Faith. "Yes, fine, ten, no, thirty, yes thirty, Okay." No safe word is given so Jake should be able to relax and wait 30 minutes. Thirty minutes wouldn't be enough. An hour would be better but an hour also wouldn't be enough since the mind is too complex to understand. But this time, she knows what the mind wants. It wants the sensation that is running thru her body and palms to continue. She knows what the mind needs. It needs to be freed so it can take control. A sense of familiarity is its weakness. Now it needs more so it can remember more about the one gliding and moaning on top of her, the one who once said in frustration:
"This...is the last time."
