15 chapters! Whoooooo!
I've been wanting to write a fanfiction each time I've gooten obsessed with a certain media (Which is to say a lot) but I always refrained from doing it due to a lot of things: My laziness, life, self doubts, and the fear that I would eventually lose interest on that and I will not have more inspiration to write more chapters. I never wrote fanfic bc I hate when people leave unfinished works, (I know that sometimes it's for issues they don't have control over) so I didn't wanna do it. But here we are now.
I am really bad at tagging bc this is my first fic in Ao3, and after seeing how useful tagging is for searching new works I wanna change that. So I'm asking you guys for help, what tags do you think that would suit this fic? Consider everything that has happened until now.
The usual crap:
If you could send me a review that would be great! (not that I´m forcing you), all feedback is appreciated! As long as you don't yell at me XD
English isn't my first language, please tell me if you spot any mistakes!.
Disclaimer: I don't own the owl house, all the characters except my OCs belong to Disney and Danna Terrace. This AU idea belongs to moringmark (Plz go read his comics, I beg you).
-Luz-
Cliffside highschool, east gravesfield / Friday september 9th 10:30 AM
Luz heard the bell ring and exited the biology class after the rest of the students rudely interrupted the final moment's of the teacher's speech by leaving. It was friday, which meant that she had spent an entire week in human school and she learned to like it. Willow and Gus were correct: The first day was awful but a rare occurrence, the only amount of bullying she saw was someone being shoved once against the lockers (which was mild compared to the stuff in the boiling isles) and the people have been nicer to her! Her biology teacher thought that she was some fantasy-obsessed nerd when she started ranting about dragons the first day, but she showed him that she had actual knowledge about animals so now he thinks that those were only the nerves of the first day.
"Well, he isn't totally wrong"
Then she had a bad start with the chemistry class when she broke all of those test tubes, her classmates laughed at her and the teacher was furious. Apparently he thought that she had done it on purpose and sent her to detention, luckily Bump was passing by and saved her. He believed that it had been an accident so she didn't have to go to detention, but Eda had to pay for what she broke and her mentor had not been happy about it. As punishment she had a double shift at the Owl House.
Other than that her week had been pretty uneventful. Her excessive clumsiness and nervousness left her after the first day, now she was only the right amount of awkward. Nothing happened with the bad first impressions she had been worrying about, people treated her normally. She still didn't have any other friends besides Gus and Willow, but it could've been worse than that.
"This is just the first week, everyone knows they don't count. I'm sure I can make more friends here"
Luz started to walk happily towards her next class. She had history in this period which meant that Willow and her were going to be together. She still wasn't too good with history, after all trying to memorize centuries of knowledge was hard, but she was trying her best at it.
"Luz! Wait!" She turned around to see Willow running after her "Don't go there, the baseball team is recruiting members around that hall" The girl looked frightened.
"What does that have to do with me?" She had heard rumors of how much sports mattered to the school and how becoming an athlete gives you the best popularity boost "Is it such a brutal sport that you don't wanna see me get recruited?"
"What? No! It's just that Amity is the captain and Boscha is the star player, I believe that they are the ones recruiting this time"
*gulp*"Nevermind, yeah. Let's take the long way around"
With that the two girls turned around and searched for an alternative route, this would take them more time than usual but the next class wasn't going to start anytime soon. As they walked Luz could see that the baseball team wasn't the only one looking for new members: Several sports teams and clubs had stands and banners with their members announcing the activities and benefits they would get if they joined a club. She could see Gus in the distance trying to get people to join his Dungeons and Dragons group with little success. Luz thought of going to say hi to him but she didn't want to interrupt his club activities.
"Wow, it's like everyone decided to open their club's doors at the same time"
"Well it's a new year, which means new students to impress with your club, and they really need it. Remember that people graduate every year so the have to replenish their numbers"
"Makes sense" She recalled that goodbye party that she and Amity saw in the summer for the track team.
"So now that we are here, do you have any club that you would be interested in joining?" Willow asked once she saw her looking at the stands.
"I don't know! I haven't seen a lot of animes to go into the anime club, and I'm not good enough for the chess club even after Eda taught me" She knew how to play that game, but Eda beat her every time and the older woman seemed to like it a lot. It really showed how bad she was at playing ahead.
"What about sports? If you became an athlete that would make our lives so much easier"
"I don't know. I wasn't much of a sports person back home"
"Oh really? But you are always running and jumping around, and you barely get tired. I assumed that you were in the soccer team in your old school"
"Oh haha, it's not that. I used to have an active lifestyle back home, living in the countryside helped" She could never get used to the sedentary life in the human realm. Luz would be always thankful for the amounts of entertaining humans had developed, but after a couple hours she could get crazy inside the house without anything to do. In fact, she was actually glad that school and her work had kept her busy these days, it was so much more like the busy life in the boiling isles she was used to.
Willow's commentary was also true: Luz had discovered that she had more stamina and physical endurance than the typical human, sometimes she could be in perfect shape after fighting with a monster and doing double-shift at work. She still wasn't sure if it was due to her being a different species, or just because she was more fit than the average human due to the physical effort she had to do in her daily life.
"I didn't have enough time to practise sports back home, If I'm honest with you"
"Well you have time now!" Willow kept pointing at the stands advertising different teams.
"Not really, school takes a lot of my time and I still have my job at the owl house"
"Not to mention that I have to fight monsters and find relics on my free time"
"Oh well, it would have been good to have immunity against bullies" Willow sighed and they moved on.
When they were passing through the track team stand she noticed a familiar face, it was the same student that was running in the track field when Amity and her were doing the tour for the campus. It seemed that the guy recognized her as well and waved. She was surprised by this but she waved back at him, seeing he got her attention he winked at Luz. She was a pretty oblivious person when it came to these kinds of stuff but even Luz could tell that the guy did the whole shirtless bit on purpose to show off.
This was another whole thing that she didn't want to deal with: infatuations. Her life was pretty unstable at the moment to worry about dating someone, not to mention that it would expose her secret even more. Luz had a bit of experience in this department but not much and wasn't interested in having a relationship. Her biggests issues were to save the people from the interdimensional monsters popping out of rifts, find the plane-shifting staff, go back home, end Belos's tyranny, and graduate from human highschool. There would be enough time to worry about love interests after that.
The problem was that Luz was one big bisexual disaster, so of course she blushed shyly like the dumb schoolgirl she was. To make things worse she ended up crashing against a trash bin for not paying attention.
"Wow, really? Willow looked at her, unamused.
"I can't help it, ok? He's really cute" Once she realized what she said Luz covered her mouth, afraid that it was going to talk without her brain's permission again "please don't comment on that"
But the look the other girl gave her told Luz she was going to comment on that exact topic. So she did her best to change the subject.
"Sooooo a-anyway, are you going to try to get into one of the sports clubs? That way you can get the athlete's immunity yourself" The kept walking as they talked and they were now beyond all the stands for the clubs.
"Real smooth" Willow mocked her "But really, come on Luz. There's no way I'll get chosen for a team even if I apply"
"Why not?" Luz was genuinely curious.
"Because… I'm me?" Willow gestured to all of herself "Willow the girl with glasses that everyone likes to bully. Willow the girl that cannot talk to anyone without embarrassing herself. Willow, the girl that only talks to plants…"
"Okey, stop that" Luz stood in front of Willow and looked to the sides, once she checked that no one was nearby she enveloped Willow in a hug "You are not those things, okey? Those are just some mean things that people say to get to you, you are not allowed to say that to yourself"
Willow hugged her back and hummed.
"Fine, sorry"
"You have nothing to apologize for" Luz smiled at her.
"Yeah but still, I'm not fit for sports and everyone knows it" She lifted her arm to show her non-existent biceps "If I apply now I'm just going to fail miserably"
"Well you can get fit for sports! Building muscle is not easy but not impossible, if you really wanna do it then you should just go for it!"
"Are you sure?" Willow looked at her inredusly.
"Yeah! I'll even help you. It's what friends do after all" She smiled at her.
"O-okey, I'll think about it" Willow still sounded unsure "Let's just talk about something else. How's your boscha problem going?"
Luz's smile vanished.
"That bad huh?"
"Oh you have no idea"
Boscha has proven to be difficult to deal with, ever since she escaped from her on the first day. It seemed that her friends were right: By running away from her she was only making her angrier, it would've been better if she just confronted har at the beginning. Sadly Luz was way too used to running away from her problems.
Tuesday morning
Luz got out of her history class excitedly with the rest of her classmates. She thought that it would be interesting to learn about human history, but that teacher made it so boring! All of those dates and unimportant events made the class feel like a tedious chore, history was supposed to be exciting! Those youtube videos that her friends sent her were way better at summarizing the events.
"It doesn't matter right now, because I am going to PE class next!" She thought with enthusiasm.
PE class was without a doubt her favourite because she got to express her pent up energy. She liked the human realm, but life here was too sedentary for her liking, even with the craziness of her day to day life. That's why Luz tended to be really hyperactive in the house and Eda hated it.
She happily walked out of the classroom and turned around the corner, only to stumble into a pair of light blue eyes walkin in the opposite direction. The good part was that Luz managed to not trip with that person, the bad part was that person was Boscha.
Luz gulped.
The red haired girl was in the middle of a conversation with Amity, who looked at her in surprise. Boscha didn't react quickly enough so she turned around as fast as she could and started running in the opposite direction while hoping that they didn't notice her.
"What the-YOU!" Boscha's yells told her that wasn't the case.
"Hi girls! Sorry, I'm in a hurry" she kept running without looking back.
"Come back here!"
"Boscha, wait-" Luz heard Amity speak but she doubted the other girl would listen.
"You stay out of this!"
Luz kept running in order to lose her, passing several people in her way. She didn't want to get caught by a teacher and get scholded again (she refused to get detention in her first week in school) so this time her plan was to find a place to hide instead of running away. However that was easier said than done, Boscha was the captain of a sports team so of course she was able to keep up with her. Finally she was able to make a sharp turn and momentarily escape her line of sight, Luz looked around and, once she checked that no one was around, she turned invisible.
"Get back here you little- wait, where did she go?" Boscha turned around the corner expecting to see her, only to be met with an empty hallway "You cannot escape from me! You hear me!" She turned to every direction to yell while Luz quietly snuck behind her, holding her breath.
"Miss Smith, what's the meaning of this?" a teacher came from a classroom looking at her confused. He was wearing a brown vest over a green shirt with blue pants, he was light-skinned with brushed back brown hair.
"Oh, hi mister Diaz. I was just trying to" It was obvious that she didn't have an excuse.
"Whatever. Look, since it's recess I'm going to let it slide, but don't do it again if I'm having a class" Luz was surprised that a teacher was scolding Boscha. Usually they won't bother her because she is the captain of the school team.
"Yes mister Diaz" Boscha was grinding her teeth.
"Good, now go. Recess is almost over" With that Boscha marched in the opposite direction looking defeated.
Luz snuck into an empty classroom that was nearby and released the breath she had been holding this whole time. Immediately she became visible and kneeled on the floor. She was still panting to catch her breath while the bell rang, indicating that the period started and she was going to arrive late to PE class.
"I… can't… keep… doing this" she said between tired breaths.
Back to present
That wasn't the only incident she had with Boscha this week: On wednesday Boscha chased her again outside school, she ended up using her ice glyph to conjure some water in the road so she would slip and give her enough time to escape. Yesterday they ended up having a class together and, judging by the death glares she received, it was obvious that she was dead as soon as the bell rang, so she magically tied her shoelaces together when no one was watching. When the class ended she sprinted out of the room, Boscha tried to do the same, only to fall into the floor. Today she was waiting for her at the school's entrance with her friends. Once Boscha saw Luz she dared her to get close, so Luz just went to the side of the building and teleported inside, leaving them waiting for her in the entrance for minutes.
Yes, Luz was very good at running away from her problems. But she was running out of ideas and she didn't want to use her powers that often, it would increase the chances of getting caught.
"You just need to face her, and make this end as soon as you can"
"But what do I do, Willow? I can't just sit there and let her punch me"
"Actually I was about to suggest just that" her friend looked at her sheepishly
"Willow!" Luz gave an undignified yelp.
"What? It was just an idea!" Willow raised her hands defensively "Boscha won't stop until she feels like she won. She has this need to constantly prove she is superior than anyone else, so this will go on even if you beat her in a fight, and no offense Luz but I doubt you could take her"
"Hey! I've been in a lot of fist fights for your information" Luz pouted, feeling offended.
"I don't think that's something you should say out loud in a school, Luz" Willow looked around to see if anyone listened, luckily they were alone. They arrived at their classroom but the teacher wasn't there yet, so they sat next to each other and waited.
"So, what do you think I should do? Just, grovel to Boscha? Treat her like she's better than me? Let her beat me? Why?" Luz whispered to her friend, they were in class after all and she did not want anyone else to listen to this.
"That was just my suggestion Luz, you can do whatever you want. The truth is that Boscha won't stop until she felt like she won"
"But like, why should I let her win? Heck, why does everyone here grovel to Boscha" She had only been in the school for like a week but it seemed that all the students enjoyed being mistreated by her.
"It's just… the way it is. Some people are just better, while others won't get to their level no matter how hard they try. Everyone at school belongs into a hierarchy, whether they like it or not" Her friend looked really sad while speaking, Luz wondered if those were really her words or someone else's.
At that moment the teacher entered and they had to stop talking. As the class started Luz couldn't help but wonder about what Willow said, a lot of that discourse reminded her of what people used to say in the Boiling isles actually: Not everyone agreed with the way Belos handled things but some people refused to rebel just because "That's the way things are", they couldn't imagine how things could change and just accepted the hard reality thinking that it's the only way things could be. When she was little her mum took her to rallies and protests against the Belos regime and most times they were chased by loyalists and fanatics, but sometimes there were people there that told them they should just give up and move on.
It seemed that things weren't so different on earth after all. Here they had people that thought they could stand above everyone else and people who thought things could not be changed.
"Well we'll see about that. After all, I was part of a rebellion to change things back home, who says I can't do the same here?"
-Amity-
Cliffside highschool, east gravesfield / Monday september 12th 14:05 PM
Amity stepped outside the girls bathroom and waited for her friends to come out. She had been worrying about the others not accepting her back into the group after the fight she had with Boscha in the summer, but in the end they just decided to move on. Honestly Amity should've seen this happening: These girls would not want to deal with a rift in their group or anything that could ruin their perfect lives,so they were more than happy with just pretending that never happened. The only one that changed her attitude towards her was Boscha, Amity had hurt the pride of the red haired girl so she was dead for her, she took every chance she got to make her mad, but none of it affected her.
"Okay, we are done. Let's go" Skarra emerged from the bathroom and interrupted her thoughts "What's your next class?"
"History"
"Oh man, you got Mr Diaz then, sorry" Skara looked at her with sympathy, that teacher was known for making boring lectures and being harsh with students.
"It's okay, all I gotta do is look at the front and pretend that I'm paying attention"
"Amity Blight not paying attention in class? Wow, weren't you supposed to be the 'little miss perfect'? What happened, finally hit your rebel phase?" Skara hip-bumped her playfully as they were walking.
"It's just not possible to pay attention to his classes! Besides I don't see the point to it" Skara gasped dramatically and Amity shoved her "You know what I mean! All of the subjects and extracurriculars I take are for a good reason! They are useful for me, I… am going to be working in Blight robotics in the future and knowing about maths, physics, biology, and chemistry is useful. Heck, even stuff like social studies and literature can help me with my career, not to mention that they are interesting! But I really doubt that knowing how Henry the 8th killed his women is going to help me when I'm an adult"
"I feel ya sis"
As they walked in silence Amity tried her hardest not to think about her future. As much as she complained about the lack of freedom she got in her schooldays, things were going to be worse if she worked in Blight Robotics. Her mother had total control in that place and she would be breathing in her neck twenty four-seven, she would be enslaved to her job like her dad. She didn't want that but she also didn't have the strength to oppose her mother, so her only choice was to leave the house once she was over age.
Turning around a corner they almost bumper with someone she wasn't expecting: Viney. The short girl and her had bonded in the summer school, but once classes started she couldn't be with her anymore. Odalia saw her once when she showed up to pick Amity from school without telling her and she scolded her for "fraternizing with the low class". To make things worse Boscha was bothering her the other day and she didn't do anything to intervene, judging from Viney's expression she hadn't forgotten about that.
"Ups, sorry. We didn't see you there" Skara apoligized without noticing her inner dilemma.
"It's fine" she growled and pushed past the two of them.
"Geez, what's her problem?"
"It's okey, just leave her" Amity tried not to think about her too often.
They arrived at Skarra's classroom and she waved goodbye to her friend as she walked inside. While she turned to go to her own class Amity reflected that going back to being part of her old group wasn't that bad, sure Boscha was a pain in the ass and sure there was the thing with Viney, but there wasn't much she could do about her. In contrast, Skara and the other girls were cool… most of the time, she also enjoyed being in a group: That way all the creeps that wanted to ask her out would think twice before doing it.
She arrived at the classroom and prepared herself for a boring class, the fact that it was one of the last periods of the day only made things worse. As she was getting the things from her backpack more people entered the room, including one familiar brunette girl, Amity tried her best to not pay her attention but she could feel her gaze in her back, especially considering that she was sitting right behind her. After a while she felt someone poking her from behind but she refrained herself from looking.
"Please don't talk to don't talk to don't talk to don't talk to me" Amity begged internally.
"Hey, Amity-" Luz began talking.
"Alright class, let's start. Everyone put your phones away if you don't want me to put them in the box, and stop talking" Finally the teacher arrived and she had never been so happy about studying history before.
Luz whined but didn't try anything else and, to her credit, started to focus in the class by asking questions and trying to participate as much as she could. Amity smiled at that, she remembered that the homeschooled girl had troubles with this subject in particular so it was nice to see her try, despite Mr Diaz making the class so boring.
After a while the bell rang and before the teacher could dismiss the class she bolted out of the room, she didn't care if this affected her perfect record, she just needed to get out of there. On her way to her next class she ran into some kids from the rugby team, they looked like they wanted to say something to her but she just sent them a death glare that stopped them on their tracks. Ever since she became the baseball team captain all the jocks from other teams began daring each other to ask her out and it was getting tedious, there were even people betting on who she'd pick all around the school.
"Do these people have nothing else going for their lives? How can they find this interesting? And why would they think it was ok to treat me like a trophy?"
She arrived at chemistry class with these angry thoughts in her head, she calmed herself upon noticing that Skara was there, however they could not talk because the teacher was already there, so she just took her place. As the minutes passed more and more students showed up and just before the bell rang both Luz and Willow bursted through the entrance looking really tired.
"Great" she thought with frustration "This is just my luck today"
"A couple more seconds and you'd be late!" Professor Hermonunculus yelled at them angrily, for some reason he seemed to be extra angry when Luz was around "You gotta be faster next time girls''
"Sorry professor Hermonunculus!" Willow apologized between pants. Judging by their red faces they have been running.
"Ahh whatever, just sit down" Hermonunculus tried to sound scary but honestly he looked quite ridiculous sitting on his elevated chair with a few cushions so he could reach his desk (he was very small).
The two girls sat down and the class started, luckily this time Luz was far away from her so she could concentrate easily. The class went its natural course after that: The students grasping to understand the new contents given by the teacher, Hermonunculus insulting all of their collective intelligence, and Amity acing every single question she was asked.
"Esplendid again miss Blight!" Hermonunculus congratulated her one more time "Once again you proved that you are the only being in this class who is able to pay attention"
There were several groans after that and everyone looked at her with disdain. Amity did her best not to cringe while she shrunk on her seat.
"Does Hermonunculus really think he's doing me a favour by saying this? All he's doing is making them mad at me!"
"Now let's keep going, shall we? We still have a lot of time to see if the rest of you are capable of retaining a minimum amount of information" he turned towards the chalkboard and started writing "Now, would anyone be so kind to tell me the answer to this question"
Amity sighed and started to raise her hand in order to answer when-
"It's carboxylic acid, I think" a voice spoke before she could answer. Everyone turned around to see Luz, looking like she regretted speaking up.
"Miss Noceda" Hermonunculus spoke with the same harsh tone he always used with Luz "Do I have to remind you that you need to raise your hand before speaking? Something so basic that even elementary students are aware of?"
"Sorry…"
"What is his problem? She only answered your question!"
"She only answered your question!" Willow echoed her thoughts in an outburst that immediately silenced the class.
"Miss Park, see me after class" his tone was even colder "now to resume with the lesson I am surprised to announce that your answer was correct, miss Noceda. Now, why don't you answer the next question, huh?" He pointed at the chalkboard with an air of superiority.
"Oh my gosh, this is straight up bullying!" She looked back at Luz with worry, only to see her standing up with determination in her eyes.
"The answer is sodium hyaluronate" she said with confidence.
"Oh…" Hermonunculus looked at his book to check "Yes, that is correct too, can you do the next one?"
"Ferulic acid"
"Fluorescein"
"Magnesium carbonate"
She answered the questions one after one with total confidence, Amity was impressed.
"Well done miss Noceda! Everything is correct" his cold voice had been replaced by a jovial tone "Every single one was right!" Then he turned towards her "You better watch out, Miss Blight, now you may have competition for the top student spot!"
Amity looked at the latina with a raised eyebrow and the girl just shrugged sheepishly and sat down again. It was clear that she didn't like having the whole attention of the class on her. As Hermonunculus resumed his lecture, she could not help but think on his last comment.
"Luz taking my spot as the top student wouldn't be so bad: People would stop calling me 'little miss perfect', Hermonunculus would stop comparing the rest of the class to me, and I'd doubt my mum would make a big deal if I'm the second best in only one of my classes, especially considering I'm the best in the rest of them" However something about Luz, someone who just started school for the first time and needed her help to pass the entrance exam, being better than her in her favorite subject made her feel… off. "I should feel happy, it's good that she integrated herself into the school and it sounds like she is enjoying herself! So… why do I feel like this?"
-Willow-
Cliffside highschool, lunch room / Wednesday september 14th 12:05 PM
"...Then the teacher gave her the highest grade for her essay! The rest of the class were pretty impressed too" Gus finished his story as the three of them ate lunch together. He was telling Willow how Luz was apparently the literature teacher's new favourite student.
"Wow Luz, I didn't know that you were such a prodigy. First chemistry and now literature?" She sent her friend a smug smile.
"What happened in chemistry?" Gus inquired.
"Hermonunculus was so impressed by her that he said she could be his new top student, he even told Amity she should watch out for her"
"Willow, stop it!" Luz looked really embarrassed "I'm not trying to take Amity's spot"
"You totally should in my opinion"
"What? I'm just glad you are doing well in classes, in fact you are doing way better than I expected. Also now I can brag that I'm friends with two prodigies"
"Wait, two?" Luz looked confused.
"Yeah Gus over here" she pointed to their friend, who was smiling smugly "is a local boy genius, with a certificate to prove it and everything"
"Wow, that's great!"
"What can I say? I just skipped a few grades and they put me here because of my awesomeness"
"Wait, really?"
"Uhh yeah, I'm actually two years younger than you. Haven't you noticed that I'm shorter than everyone in our year?" he gestured towards the other boys from Luz's age "Also my voice is still changing"
At that point the bell rang so they had to finish eating their lunch quickly and start walking towards their next class together, they had maths in the next period and it was the only class all three of them shared.
"Honestly I had the same expectatives than Willow, Luz" Gus commented while looking a little bit guilty "Ok I don't know if this makes me sound like a bad person so I'm going to apologize in advance, but I was kinda expecting you to struggle a little bit more, considering that you had to ask us for help for stuff from middle school in your entrance exam"
"Oh well, I can't blame you for thinking that, I was homeschooled after all" Luz as always was understanding "My schooling was really erratic and my… mother prioritized certain subjects over others"
"Yeah we can tell. I think she did a really good job considering how you turned up. How is she by the way? You barely talk to us about her" Gus didn't seem to notice how Luz's mood instantly darkened when he mentioned her mother, but Willow did.
"Hey Gus, weren't you talking about how you wanted to tell us something before? But then you got distracted talking about classes?" Willow might not know what was going on with her mother but she could tell that Luz did not want to talk about it.
"Oh yeah! I forgot about that!" Then he took a bite out of his sandwich and pulled out his phone "I have new information about magic beasts!"
Willow rolled her eyes, it was obvious that Gus' new fixation wasn't a new book, nor a new movie, not even that new card game that came out recently. No, it seemed that her friend was obsessed with the new urban legend that everyone was talking about, apparently someone used special effects to make people believe that there were witches and monsters running around. She turned to look at Luz but was surprised to see that the girl was leaning in with rapt fascination as Gus described the latest story surrounding the magical monsters.
"The activity has been a little bit lacking these couple of weeks but yesterday there was a sighting of a new magic creature" he then showed them a video on his phone, it looked like someone was filmed it from the roof of a building and the quality was really bad: Willow could distinguish the center of the city below the night sky and a couple seconds after that a figure appeared over it, covering the stars. It's blue body resembled a whale, except it had muscular arms that ended with claws and fiery wings, it's mouth was tiny and Willow could see a long tongue coming out of it "I saw this post a couple of nights ago and I was freaking out about it, but then I thought it was a fake because no one else saw anything else. I considered that as well, however this morning my magical news app was going crazy, it almost made me go to detention when mister Diaz heard it"
"Really? This is the third time it happens, you should've learned by now"
"And miss the chance of a monster appearing? Never. Anyway once we were on recess I saw that more people were posting about it, apparently it was spotted in the west part of the town and people took a bunch of pictures, look" This time he showed them a couple of badly taken pictures with a blurry image in the sky that resembled the creature of the video "this is a staggering amount of evidence that not even you can deny Willow!"
"Why are they so blurry?" Willow squinted her eyes to look at the image.
"Witnesses claim that it was flying at high speed, that's why no one was able to take a clear shot"
"Yeah… no. Sorry Gus, but my cousin can do better than this in photoshop, and she is eleven"
As Gus whined at her for not believing him, Willow turned to Luz to ask her what she thought about the video, but she stopped once she saw how her friend was. Her teeth were clenched together and her eyes were opened like plates.
"Luz? Is everything ok?" When Willow got closer she also noticed that her breathing was erratic as well.
"Hmm?" Luz seemed to snap out of it and looked like she just noticed them "Oh I'm fine, don't worry about it. Say Gus, where were the sightings of that creature from this morning again?"
"Uhhh, in the west part of the city? You know where the abandoned factory is"
"Gotcha, thank you" With that Luz started marching towards their opposite direction at high speed.
"Whoah wait, where are you going?" Willow saw that she was headed towards the school's entrance and she was afraid her friend would do something stupid.
"Uhhm, I… forgot to do something and now I gotta do it quickly" She said with a forced smile.
"What did you forget?"
"Uhh, just… something for class, it won't take much"
"Ok but your locker is in that way" Gus pointed to a different direction.
"Ah well-"
"Excuse me, what are you three doing here?" A new voice made them flinch. They turned around to see principal bump looking at them with a stern glare "the bell rang a long time ago and there aren't any classrooms nearby, why aren't you in class?"
"I… forgot something in my locker! And these two came to accompany me, we were just going back to class" Luz quickly explained while she and Gus just nodded out of fear.
"Uh-huh" Bump turned around and looked at how close they were from the school's entrance and conveniently no one was around to watch it "did you get the thing from your locker?"
"Oh yeah, I have it right here" Luz pointed at her backpack with the most nervous smile she has ever seen.
"Well then get going to class" he almost growled at them.
The three of them walked as fast as possible (no running in hallways) towards their classroom.
Some hours later
Luz had been nervous ever since the incident with Bump. She kept looking at the windows and not paying attention in class, which was really weird for her. When school ended she bolted out as if Boscha was chasing her. Willow went after her and she found Luz sprinting throughout the school's fields.
"I gotta convince this girl to enter a sports team"
"Luz, wait!" She was struggling to catch up.
"I'm sorry Willow but I have to do something elseee…" She then looked over Willow's shoulder and paled "Ok bye, see ya later!" Then she ran at full speed.
Before she could protest Willow felt someone shove her aside, she yelped when she saw it was Boscha.
"Out of my way, nitwit. HEY YOU, COME BACK HERE" Then she charged forward towards Luz, only to trip and fall. Willow saw how her foot was stuck in a root, which was weird because there wasn't a root in the floor one second ago.
"Well, at least Boscha ignores me now"
-Marcus-
An abandoned factory at west Gravesfield / Wednesday september 14th 19:00
Marcus looked at the giant beast his team had been tracking for the past week. It was called the guardian and on top of its enormous size and monstrous form, it had the power to control the nearby weather, which made him hard to conceal to the public eye. Weather forecasts had been going crazy these past couple of days just because of this creature.
"Flying monsters always make things so complicated"
Luckily they learned it's favourite food and used its scent to lure it outside of the most populated areas of town. He then assembled a strike team to take it down, usually his approach was to contain and secure the active, but this wouldn't be possible with this one: The guardian's weather magic could still damage the town if they made it angry, not to mention it could fly away at any second and find a new place full of humans and that would make things so much harder for them. So, it was decided that if they were to confront the guardian, it would have to be one time only. He went there with the intention of having a long battle where he could lose many of his men.
Only to arrive at the scene and find out it already happened.
"Should we engage sir?" One of his strike team members asked.
Marcus looked at the scene: The guardian was knocked out on top of a building, which crumbled under the beast's massive weight, there were a couple of fires around and a couple of walls that were broken or outright missing, but nothing he couldn't handle. The beast was still alive, he could still see it's belly rise and fall, but it was clear that it was damaged. And there, flying high above everything, was a witch looking at all of them.
Even from the distance separating them and his aging eyes, Marcus could distinguish their blonde hair and purple cloak. He considered what his subordinate said. They could engage with the witch in order to capture them (They came with the necessary equipment to deal with a flying opponent after all) but that would mean risking his men more than he should, he felt that they should take this as good luck and leave it like that.
"No. Have our units enter the scene and start securing the asset, also send a few of our men to deal with the fires"
"And the witch?"
"Keep an eye for them and be on standby if they try something, but for now don't attack"
"May I ask why sir? It's a witch! One of the strongest enemies from the boiling isles, shouldn't we prioritize that as our target?"
"We have yet to see if it's an enemy, but if we attack them it would definitely think of us that way and I'd rather not lose men"
"I still think this is a mistake…"
"Maybe, but think about this: So far the only thing people got from the guardian were those blurry photos on the internet, we have the situation completely controlled here, but what would happen if we engage in a battle with the witch? It will try to run and there's a chance people might see it then"
His man nodded and went to assign the units to their duties. Meanwhile Markus went towards the vigilance unit that was examining the scene, but he made sure to never take his eyes out of the witch, just in case.
He arrived at the van with an incorporated laboratory the sentry unit used for surveillance and went inside. There multiple people in lab coats were moving around doing several jobs, he picked up a few conversations as he was walking:
"...the energy levels are insane, if we could…"
"...no terrestrial damage besides the zone where the guardian crashed, it means that the fight took place entirely on air. It makes sense when you consider…"
"We have completed the analysis sir, this witch does not coincede with the data from ones that attacked our warehouse, which means that there's a chance she is the wild witch we were warned about!"
"A wild witch huh? That's interesting" He walked towards a table with all sorts of technological gear and grabbed a pair of binoculars.
"Can I grab these?" He asked the woman who seemed in charge of this unit.
"Yes sir!"
He walked to the window and used the binoculars to look at the witch. He saw that the lower part of their face was covered with a mask connected to a cape, besides her palisman nothing was really notable from them: their body curves suggested she was a woman, her blonde hair was fuzzy, her skin was pale, and she was wearing normal clothes from the boiling isles as far as he remembered. She looked pretty young.
"Why hasn't she left?" The woman in charge came to his side "What do you think she's doing? She could've left by now"
"She's doing the same thing we are doing" Marcus smiled.
"Which is?"
"Assessing the situation"
I even had to google shit about chemistry for this one(I apologize to everyone if the stuff I put there isn't accurate), I wish I could dedicate the same amount of energy into doing productive shit. Also if you are wondering why Luz is so knowledgeable in chemistry it was said in a previous chapter that she already had knowledge of some subjects bc they were important to do magic, in this case she knows chemistry bc of potions.
I really have some regrets about the way I wrote Amity, in the first episodes of the show and the comic she appears to be way more bitchy and confident than the way I portray her, what do you guys think? Personally I like the way she is in this fic but it's not too late to change it.
The guardian is the same monster the illusionist used in the looking glass ruins. Also that witch in the end is still Luz, I mentioned a couple of chapters back that she uses illusions to hide her identity.
