The Major's Mate

Chapter 4: And They Lived

3rd P.O.V

One would think that with the news she would've had a breakdown. She didn't. For the first year Jasper was in denial. There was no way that this could be happening. He didn't finally find his mate only to lose her, but the cancer had spread. Treatment was anything but easy. Jasper had been through war, but this battle wasn't one he had ever fought.

Selene never had a breakdown.

Jasper did.

Peter and Charlotte did

Esme and Carlisle did, twice, and the big one was when Selene forgave them for their past actions. They stepped up their game along with Edward and Bella. Both who also had a breakdown.

Emmett, Rosalie, Alice and Riley did.

Watching day after day as her body withered. As her magic grew weaker. The closest thing to a breakdown that Selene came close to was when she couldn't use her magic anymore. Jasper held her to his chest as she cursed and screamed about how unfair it all was.

But she never cried.

Jasper did.

Peter and Charlotte did.

Her whole family did.

As did her old unit who she briefly visited during her second year fighting the battle.

Jasper truly had no idea how strong she was.

The way she kept on a smile even though her body was in excruciating pain. The way she never stopped laughing even though she knew that it would lead to a coughing fit and coughing up blood. How when everyone else was on the verge of giving up hope she'd still keep going.

Three years in and Jasper knew that he was slowly losing her. The treatment wasn't working.

He finally came to his senses and popped the big question to which she said yes. Despite her insistence not to the whole family went all out. Inviting everyone including the Volturi themselves.

Year four and the battle was getting harder. Selene still smiled, but it wasn't as bright. She still laughed but laughing came with chest pain and vomiting blood. Yet, she still kept going.

Smiles, laughter, and tears.

A lot of tears especially today.

Jasper wore his best suit. His blonde hair combed back from his face. The golden band on his hand shone brightly in the glistening sun.

It was such a beautiful day.

Speeches, stories, some smiles, but mostly tears.

He had shed his tears earlier and now was just going through the motions. He forced himself to watch as they lowered the casket into the ground.

The first year without her was the worst.

The second, third, and fourth were no better, but he lived.

Jasper, Peter, Charlotte, and the Cullens became family through the years. Sticking together through the grief. There were days they could smile. Days they could laugh about Selene, and then there were days when they all cried. Days they fought over what should've, could've and would've been.

And they lived.

Because she had made them promise that they would.

They lived

There are many moments to come that won't be easy but the Whitlock and Cullen's are family now. Tied together because of one person.

A mate

A sister

A daughter

A friend

And they all lived

They just lived without her

But she was forever in their hearts.

This may not be a fairytale happily ever after.

But they lived

And they lived keeping her memory alive.

She was just a genie.

Born into a world where her kind was treated differently than Vampires and humans.

A world that even after her death hadn't changed the way they saw genies, but it's a world that could've been worse. A world where wars still raged on. A world of Magic. A world where vampires and humans coexist. A world of genies. A world where Major Jasper Whitlock simply exists these days.

While the hole in his chest is ever present. With the help of his newfound family he has made peace with the death of his mate, and they lived.

Even if it was without her.

A/N: So, originally this wasn't the direction that I saw the story going, but this is the end. Thanks for reading!
