Chapter 16
For several days, all concubines eagerly awaited the Emperor's visit to their quarters, hoping to dispel the rumors. Yet, the Emperor did not appease them with even a gesture and visited nowhere, making the concubines even more anxious, prompting another rush to Fengyi Palace.
Over these days, the Queen discovered the source of the rumors. Seeing the concubines' uproar, she thought of finding a scapegoat.
"Enough! Stop quarreling! The Emperor has declared himself in good health. If you don't believe it, go to Chongqing Hall and argue there!" the Queen shouted authoritatively.
"Then why hasn't the Emperor come to the inner palace?" Liu Zhaoyi asked.
The Queen glanced at Liu Zhaoyi, "What? Must the Emperor act according to your whims? The more you fuss, the less likely he is to visit!"
"Is the Emperor truly without hidden ailments?" Lin Xiuyi inquired.
"No!" the Queen coldly replied, "I have ascertained the origin of these rumors. Today, I will have the rumor-monger executed. Let's see who dares to cause further trouble!"
Hearing this, everyone fell silent. Although the Queen appeared gentle on normal days, she was still the Queen, capable of stern measures, which frightened the concubines.
"Summon someone! Go to Chaoyang Palace and bring Lady Song to me!" the Queen commanded.
Consort Song was startled, her mouth opened, but she remained silent.
Before the Queen's orders to apprehend Song Qingying could be carried out, Zhao Heng was already informed.
"Your Majesty, the Queen intends to punish Lady Song. Please hurry to save her, lest she be harmed," Lu Deli urged.
Zhao Heng smiled, "What's the rush? Isn't someone watching over her? Nothing will go wrong."
Lu Deli said no more; inexplicably, he found himself not disliking this Lady Song and did not wish for her to be punished by the Empress.
Song Qingying was brought to Fengyi Palace by two eunuchs, aware that it must concern the Emperor's "secret illness," yet she was unafraid, having spread no rumors herself.
Upon arriving at Fengyi Palace, Song Qingying knelt and saluted the Empress: "Wishing the Empress Mother a thousand years of peace."
"Lady Song, this palace asks you, why did you spread rumors that the Emperor has a hidden illness?" The Empress asked coldly without permitting Song Qingying to rise.
Song Qingying was startled, "Forgive me, Your Majesty, but I have never spread such rumors. I implore Your Majesty to see the truth."
"Dare to argue! This palace has verified that it was you who spoke these words! Confess now, or do you wish for this palace to resort to punishment!" The Empress grew increasingly severe.
Song Qingying spoke neither arrogantly nor humbly, "Your Majesty, I truly do not know what to confess. If you wish to punish me, you must at least tell me what you have discovered."
With many consorts present, the Empress naturally could not punish a palace lady without evidence. She slowly said, "Alright, I ask you, did you tell Song Guifei, Shufei, and Liu Zhaoyi that the Emperor suffers from an unspeakable ailment?"
Song Qingying suddenly realized, "So that's what Your Majesty is referring to. Yes, I did speak of it, but only out of concern for the Emperor. Being of little significance, I can't share the Emperor's worries directly, so I mentioned it to the ladies... I don't see my fault in this." As she spoke, her voice quivered with unspoken grievance.
The faces of Song Guifei and the others darkened, knowing they were also at fault in this matter.
The Empress, seeing Song Qingying's feigned ignorance, declared, "Admitting it is for the best! Your words have thrown the entire harem into disarray. I must punish you severely to set an example for the harem!"
Song Qingying pleaded, "Forgive me, Your Majesty. I don't understand. I merely shared the Emperor's health concerns with the ladies, thinking they might share his worries. How could this disturb the harem so? I fail to see how a consort's concern for the Emperor's health could cause such unrest."
The Empress felt a wave of disgust at Song Qingying's defense, "Sharp-tongued!"
"Your Majesty, if you wish to punish me, I have nothing to say. I'm not arguing for myself. But with misinformation spreading, I just want to know how our genuine concern for the Emperor was twisted into rumors. Who spread it? What exactly was said? What was their purpose?" Song Qingying knelt, her knees aching, cursing Emperor Zhao in her heart for spreading the word and causing her this trouble. It was all his fault!
The Empress scoffed, "You're playing the victim now. I don't care who spread it; I know it started with you! Dealing with you will teach the others a lesson."
"Your Majesty, I am not playing the victim. I'm merely concerned for the Emperor. If you must punish me, I accept, but I'd like to know exactly what rumors you've heard," Song Qingying said.
The Empress snorted, "You claim ignorance? You said the Emperor has a hidden illness, unable to fulfill his duties, thus avoiding the harem and delaying the selection of concubines. Was it not you who said this!"
Song Qingying, horrified, pleaded, "Your Majesty, I am wronged! I have never spoken such words! Three madams can testify for me! Noble Consort, have I ever said the Emperor could not fulfill his duties?"
Noble Consort Song paused, remembering that Song Qingying had indeed not said so, but the implication was there...
"Noble Consort Song, what do you say?" the Empress asked, turning to her with a frown.
"To Your Majesty, Lady Song indeed never mentioned the Emperor could not fulfill his duties. She merely mentioned the Emperor suffers from an indescribable hidden illness," Noble Consort Song blamed Song Qingying inwardly.
Upon hearing this, the Empress felt a twinge in her heart, sensing more to the story...
Lin Xiuyi sneered, "Then, Lady Song, do tell, what exactly is this indescribable hidden illness of the Emperor?"
Song Qingying responded, "How could I know of such matters? I am unaware of any hidden illness the Emperor might have and have never spread rumors about the Emperor being unable to fulfill his duties. Is an indescribable illness necessarily related to being unable to fulfill duties? Your Majesty, the real rumor-monger is someone else. I beg Your Majesty to see the truth."
After hearing Song Qingying's words, the Empress was uncertain, yet she felt the matter could not be dismissed so easily, "Hmph, this palace will investigate. But since this started with you, you cannot escape responsibility."
"Your Majesty, I fail to see my fault in merely caring for the Emperor. How could that be wrong?" Song Qingying said as tears fell, looking utterly pitiable, "I, a mere lady in waiting, lack the means to spread rumors. Moreover, we still do not know what hidden illness the Emperor suffers from, yet choose to keep it from you all. I... I..." Song Qingying, hearing footsteps, knew Zhao Heng had arrived, stuttered without finishing her words, and faintly collapsed to the side, fainting.
Zhao Heng arrived at the main hall of Fengyi Palace just in time to see Song Qingying fainting to the ground, his heart tightening: I'm too late!
Emperor Zhao quickly approached. Seeing the Emperor, the Empress and concubines stood to greet him, while Song Qingying lay on the ground feigning unconsciousness. She knew Emperor Zhao well; he wouldn't easily let her die. Zhao enjoyed controlling everything; if she were to die, it would be by his hand, not the Empress's.
As he passed by Song Qingying, noticing no blood or injuries on her delicate hands or face, and the absence of froth at the mouth, he was somewhat relieved.
"What happened here, Empress? Was there punishment?" Emperor Zhao gestured towards Song Qingying on the ground.
"To answer Your Majesty, I did not inflict any punishment on Song Qingying; she fainted on her own," the Empress quickly knelt down in response to Emperor Zhao's question.
"Rise, Empress. Everyone, please stand," Emperor Zhao, aware of Song Qingying's antics, instructed everyone to stand up.
"Thank you, Your Majesty."
"Has Song Qingying committed an offense?" Emperor Zhao inquired of the Empress.
"This..." The Empress hesitated, sensing Emperor Zhao's intervention meant he had heard the rumors and came to protect Song Qingying, despite initially instructing her to punish the rumor spreader.
"What has she done?" Emperor Zhao pressed further.
After a moment, the Empress replied, "It's nothing serious. I merely questioned her, and somehow she fainted. Perhaps she's just frail."
"Tell me about it," Emperor Zhao demanded.
"It's about that rumor. After discovering Song Qingying was behind it, I summoned her for questioning," the Empress explained.
"Hmm, did she confess?" Zhao Heng asked, looking at the figure lying on the ground, knowing she was feigning unconsciousness but still felt a twinge of sympathy.
The Empress pondered before responding, "No. She claimed she was merely concerned for the Emperor's health."
Zhao Heng nodded, "Then why not quickly help her up, summon the Imperial Physician."
Lu Deli quickly signaled to two palace maids nearby and ordered a young eunuch behind him to summon the Imperial Physician.
With Song Qingying causing such a scene, the concubines were unsettled, uncertain about the nature of the Emperor's alleged illness.
"It seems you all have too much idle time, troubling the Empress day after day. Have my words fallen on deaf ears?" Zhao Heng spoke coldly to the concubines.
Emperor Zhao Heng, known for his affable exterior, seldom showed a stern face, prompting everyone to kneel: "We dare not."
"Do I need to inform you of my comings and goings, or whom I choose to be with?" Zhao Heng added.
"We dare not."
Supported on a soft chair, Song Qingying inwardly cursed: All these troubles are your doing! Putting on an act! Damned swine!
"Your Majesty, the imperial physician has arrived," Lu Deli reported.
"Everyone rise," Zhao Heng commanded, "Summon the physician to examine Lady Song thoroughly."
Soon, Physician Huang approached Song Qingying, taking her pulse. With years of experience in the palace, he knew that most fainting spells among the consorts were feigned.
"Physician Huang, how is Lady Song?" Zhao Heng inquired.
"Your Majesty, Lady Song is merely overwhelmed by worry, leading to a momentary fainting. It's nothing serious," replied Physician Huang.
"Oh? Does she need medication or acupuncture?" Zhao Heng asked, seemingly in jest.
Song Qingying internally rebuked Zhao Heng: Damned brute, thinking of pricking me! Clearly up to no good!
"No need, no need. Lady Song just requires a moment to rest, and she'll recover," assured Physician Huang.
"That's good to hear. You may leave, Physician Huang," Zhao Heng dismissed him.
After Physician Huang left, Zhao Heng said, "If you have any questions for me, now's the time to ask."
But who would dare inquire further? All heads were bowed, wishing they could faint too, if not for Song Qingying's incident.
"That's all? If there's nothing else, everyone return to your own palaces! Stop believing and spreading rumors all day long, bothering the Empress!" Zhao Heng declared.
Hearing this, the concubines said, "We acknowledge our faults and shall take our leave."
"Consort Song, why aren't you leaving?" Zhao Heng asked.
"I'm waiting for Lady Song," Consort Song felt that today's events were rather peculiar. She didn't feel comfortable leaving Song Qingying alone, fearing she might say something more.
"You go ahead. She should be moving out too," Zhao Heng said.
With no choice, Consort Song left, her heart filling with even more resentment towards Song Qingying. She hadn't expected to gain an advantage from causing such a commotion.
After all the concubines had left, Zhao Heng approached Song Qingying, whispering, "Are you still not awake, my love? If you don't wake up soon, I'll have to carry you away."
Chapter 17
Song Qingying, realizing her feigned unconsciousness had been seen through, frowned slightly, her eyelashes quivering as she slowly opened her eyes to see Zhao Heng's face close to hers.
"Your Majesty... What has happened to me?" Song Qingying asked, supporting her head, her eyes wandering, gaze hazy.
Zhao Heng chuckled, "My love, you were overly concerned for me, succumbing to melancholy thoughts and fainting. Do you feel unwell anywhere now?"
Song Qingying shook her head, "Thank you for your concern, Your Majesty. I feel better now and will take my leave."
To keep up appearances, she pretended not to have heard Zhao Heng's earlier remarks about moving her out of the Chaoyang Palace.
"Where do you intend to go, my love?" Zhao Heng played along.
"I was planning to return to Chaoyang Palace," Song Qingying stood up, noticing from the corner of her eye that the Empress was watching her intently. She realized she might have caused trouble for herself by seeking a momentary verbal victory, which was not worth the ensuing trouble. With Zhao Heng around to draw hatred towards her, she decided it was best to keep a low profile from now on.
"I've already spoken to Consort Song; you need not return to Chaoyang Palace," Zhao Heng said.
"Then where shall I reside?" Song Qingying inquired.
"As a Lady, you ought to live in the Ladies' quarters," the Empress stepped forward and said.
Zhao Heng glanced at the Empress, displeased but not showing it, still smiling, "The Empress is right; you should stay in the Ladies' quarters. Let the Empress arrange it. I shall take my leave now."
A chill settled in Song Qingying's heart. Such was the nature of the palace, such was Zhao Heng. His occasional tenderness towards her was not out of affection but mere flirtation, and she was glad she hadn't taken it seriously. Song Qingying, head bowed, had previously only thought of the high-ranking concubines' plots, paying little mind to the Ladies' quarters. The original owner of her body had started in the Ladies' quarters upon entering the palace; if she could manage it, so could Song Qingying. After all, the Ladies were no more challenging to deal with than Consort Song, Consort Shu, or Consort Xian.
Zhao Heng had intended to stay and arrange for Song Qingying's accommodation but was suddenly struck by a severe headache, worse than before, forcing him to leave early. He discreetly instructed Lu Deli to ensure Lady Song's safety.
As Emperor Zhao left, the Empress sat back down with a cold laugh, thinking she had overestimated how much the Emperor cared for her. Considering he hadn't summoned her to serve him in so long, perhaps she really wasn't as important to him as she thought.
"Lady Song," the Empress slowly began.
"Your servant is here," Song Qingying respectfully replied.
"You will reside in Autumn Splendor Court. Lady Qi passed away last month, so it's now vacant," the Empress said, fixing her gaze on Song Qingying.
"Understood." Autumn Splendor Court, once home to the protagonist of the original story. Now that she would be living there, Song Qingying wondered where the protagonist would reside upon her arrival at the palace.
"Be more compliant from now on. Should there be any more disturbances, I won't be lenient next time. You may leave..." the Empress said coldly.
"I shall take my leave."
Leaving the Phoenix Pavilion, Song Qingying pondered over the plot associated with Autumn Splendor Court as she slowly made her way back. Approaching the Sunrise Palace, she took a deep breath, ready to face whatever awaited her.
Entering the main hall, she found Lady Song waiting for her, unaware of her new accommodation. Lady Song still thought the Emperor might have arranged something special for her and was visibly displeased.
"You're back. Where has the Emperor arranged for you to stay? There have been many new and refined courts lately; you're quite lucky," Lady Song said with a sneer.
Predicting such a reaction, Song Qingying responded, "By the Empress's arrangement, I have been placed in Autumn Splendor Court."
Lady Song was taken aback, "Autumn Splendor Court? The court for Ladies?"
Song Qingying smiled, "Exactly. As a Lady, it is only fitting I reside in the court for Ladies. I am grateful for Lady Song's care, allowing me to stay in the Sunrise Palace for so long."
This news seemed to please Lady Song, who smiled, "You're my sister; of course, I should take care of you."
Seeing Lady Song's reaction, Song Qingying suddenly felt that moving to the court for Ladies might not be so bad after all.
"I thank you for your care, Lady. I will move there today," Song Qingying said.
Lady Song raised an eyebrow: "Since it's the Empress's arrangement, you should move there. Xiangqiao has always served you well; I will assign her to you."
"Thank you, my lady." Song Qingying bowed and then left to return to her quarters. Upon her return, she noticed someone had tampered with her sleeping chamber. Song Qingying scoffed internally, thinking it best to move sooner rather than later to avoid getting entangled in Lady Song's schemes.
The people arranged by the Empress to accompany her to the court for Ladies were already summoned by Xiangqiao. Song Qingying noted one maid was missing but didn't inquire further, assuming Xiangqiao had filled the vacancy.
Song Qingying didn't own much; apart from what her family had brought into the palace, there were only some rewards given by the Empress and Lady Song when she was appointed as a Lady. It didn't take long to pack her belongings.
"My lady, remember the scripture copying task the lady mentioned," Xiangqiao reminded.
Song Qingying smiled: "I remember, I won't forget." With that, she took out a key from her pouch, opened a chest, and retrieved the scripture she had copied.
"Let's go," said Song Qingying, holding the scripture as she led the way out of her quarters.
After paying their respects to Lady Song, the group headed to Autumn Splendor Court. Song Qingying didn't know where it was, only that it was in a more secluded part of the palace. Indeed, it took a while to get there.
The court was quite large but appeared neglected and dilapidated. As Song Qingying entered, it was eerily quiet, save for two maids sweeping in the courtyard who didn't bother to greet her and kept to their tasks.
She wondered if the Empress had informed the staff here about her arrival, as there was no one to guide her.
"Xiangqiao, go inquire where Lady Qi used to reside," Song Qingying ordered.
The cleaning maids, upon hearing the name "Lady Qi," were so frightened that they dropped their brooms and fled. Only Song Qingying and her entourage remained in the courtyard.
Song Qingying was puzzled; why were they so afraid upon hearing "Lady Qi"? Could it be that there were ghosts?
Just as Song Qingying was about to send Xiangqiao to inquire, a palace maid entered from outside.
"Greetings to the noble, may I know which noble this is?" the palace maid inquired with a bow.
Song Qingying thought to herself, finally someone recognizes her as a noble.
Xiangqiao explained, "Our master is Lady Song, the sister of the Noble Consort Song. From now on, she will reside in the Autumn Splendor Courtyard. May I ask sister, where did Lady Qi reside previously?"
Upon hearing the name 'Lady Qi,' the palace maid's expression turned peculiar, pointing towards the northwest corner, she said, "Lady Qi used to live behind that door over there," before quickly departing.
Song Qingying frowned, wondering what was going on. Why did everyone act so strangely upon mentioning Lady Qi? Could there really be ghosts? The book didn't mention anything about ghosts. Regardless, even if there were ghosts, she had no choice but to move in now.
"Let's go," said Song Qingying, heading towards the door, with the maids following. Approaching the door, Xiangqiao pushed it open, and Song Qingying saw a small courtyard branching off on its own, resembling an ordinary household with three main rooms, two side rooms, and a crabapple tree in the center of the courtyard standing taller than a person. Song Qingying found this place pleasing; having such a private courtyard was indeed better than cramming in with others.
Xiangqiao whispered, "I heard that Lady Qi passed away just last month... My lady, why didn't you discuss this with the Noble Consort in the Chaoyang Palace? How could you be assigned to such a place?"
Song Qingying smiled, "Which palace hasn't seen death? I'm not afraid. Let's go in and take a look."
Xiangqiao, saying nothing more, followed Song Qingying inside. Upon opening the main room's door, it indeed resembled an ordinary household. Song Qingying was puzzled; how could such a place exist in the palace? Lady Qi wasn't mentioned at all in the book, nor was this courtyard meant for the female protagonist, leaving Song Qingying quite perplexed.
Ultimately, the Empress still sent someone. Her longstanding reputation for virtue couldn't be tarnished just because of Song Qingying, especially now that Song had already moved in, presuming no further troubles could arise.
"Servant Li Zhong presents rewards from Her Majesty the Empress to Lady Song," announced the leading eunuch.
Song Qingying thought to herself, what reward? It's just some daily necessities that she should rightfully have. Xiangqiao hurriedly said, "Thank you, Eunuch Li, please, Eunuch Li, come in."
"Bring everything in," Eunuch Li called out in a high-pitched voice to the eunuchs and palace maids behind him.
A line of people filed in, carrying nothing but bedding, curtains, teapots, and teacups, with only the last two palace maids holding two vase ornaments.
"Thank you for your efforts, Eunuch Li, Xiangqiao," Song Qingying signaled for Xiangqiao to give a tip, and Xiangqiao reluctantly took out some silver. Song Qingying sighed; she needed to cultivate her own confidants sooner rather than later. Xiangqiao was Empress Song's person, and all her eunuchs and palace maids had served in Chaoyang Palace, none of whom she trusted.
After Eunuch Li left, Song Qingying called over the eunuchs and palace maids, now having no choice but to rely on these people.
Song Qingying scrutinized them carefully and finally spoke with a cold face, "I don't care whose people you were before, now that you serve in this courtyard, I am your master. Do you understand?"
"Your servants understand," the palace maids and eunuchs replied.
"Back in Chaoyang Palace, you were protected by the Empress. Now in this courtyard, you must be cautious in every aspect, do not stir trouble or do anything against palace regulations. If you cause trouble, I will be the first to not spare you!" Song Qingying said sternly.
"Yes," the palace maids and eunuchs replied, bowing their heads, each with their own thoughts.
After finishing, Song Qingying turned with a smile, "Of course, if you are bullied, I will not ignore it. In Chaoyang Palace, you all have told me stories, and I remember them well. If you do your duties well, I will not mistreat you."
Balancing kindness and severity is the most important thing in managing subordinates, a principle Song Qingying understood well.
"You may go back to your tasks now, remember, clean every corner thoroughly," Song Qingying paused before adding, "If there are any items left by Qi Cairen, do not damage or soil them, arrange them properly to one side."
After Song Qingying finished, she saw them go about their tasks without needing her to assign them, evidently, they had their own procedures. Empress Song had never had these people serve Song Qingying closely in Chaoyang Palace, and Song Qingying needed to observe them carefully to see if any could be taken into her confidence.
"Xiangqiao, you go and busy yourself as well, I'll take a look around myself." Song Qingying was not very satisfied with Xiangqiao's performance earlier; whether intentional or not, she should not have neglected the eunuch who came to deliver things.
Song Qingying inspected each room, growing more puzzled by what she saw. How could there be such a place in the inner palace? Especially when she pushed open the small door beside the west wing, she was surprised to find an abandoned vegetable garden and a chicken coop that had collapsed on one side, clearly resembling a farmhouse. Interesting, Song Qingying found herself liking this place more and more.
Chapter 18
Upon returning to the imperial study, Zhao Heng summoned the imperial physician, but they could not diagnose the problem; Zhao Heng's headache was so severe that not even a bowl of calming soup had any effect.
"Lu Deli, send someone to urge Meng Changhuai, he should have been back from his trip to the south by now!" Zhao Heng said, frowning.
Meng Changhuai was a trusted aide of Zhao Heng, with a group of people under him who did Zhao Heng's bidding in secret. This time, Zhao Heng had sent Meng Changhuai to Lumingshan to find an ancient physician; Lumingshan was near the capital, and there had been no word from Meng Changhuai for several days.
"Doctor Xue mentioned that this ancient physician is somewhat eccentric, probably not easy to invite. I have already urged once," Lu Deli said.
Zhao Heng frowned, it seemed the Emperor's face didn't carry as much weight as he thought. He sighed, a rare occurrence for him: "Well, it's not a matter of life and death at the moment."
The pain Zhao Heng suffered lasted for more than an hour before it eased, leaving him drenched in sweat. After returning to his sleeping quarters and changing, he finally relaxed, leaning back on a soft couch, flipping through a book.
Lu Deli only mentioned after seeing Zhao Heng's headache had subsided: "Your Majesty, the Empress has arranged for Lady Song to stay in Qiu Hua Court."
"Qiu Hua Court?" Zhao Heng didn't seem to remember.
"Yes, it's located in the northwest corner, behind Jin Ou Pavilion," Lu Deli explained.
"Why so remote? Who else lives there?" Zhao Heng didn't forget his duty amidst his concerns, completely forgetting about the ladies in Qiu Hua Court.
"Lady Chen, Lady Li, Lady Zhou, and previously Lady Qi, who passed away last month. Lady Song has moved into Lady Qi's former residence," Lu Deli was well-versed in the affairs of the harem.
Zhao Heng chuckled, "The Empress really knows how to arrange things. Well, since she has moved in, let's not disturb her for now. We'll find a better place for her once her status is elevated."
After a moment's thought, Lu Deli decided to speak the truth: "Qiu Hua Court is not very peaceful; there are rumors of it being haunted."
"What's going on?" Zhao Heng's brow furrowed.
"They say it's the unrestful spirit of Lady Qi..." Lu Deli said.
Zhao Heng glanced at Lu Deli: "Have you seen it?"
"This servant has not..." Lu Deli knew he was in for trouble again. These past two months had been truly unlucky for him, with continuous incidents in the harem. If not for his long service from a young age, he might have lost his head several times over.
"Lady Qi, I remember the report saying she died of a cold. Check into it for me. And investigate the people around Lady Song too. That naive girl probably knows nothing, yet she dares to employ the people of Empress Song. Also, inform the Internal Affairs Department to ensure her living expenses are not neglected," Zhao Heng ordered before returning to his book.
Lu Deli accepted the order and departed. He needed to catch the "ghost" quickly. With everything going wrong lately, failing to catch a "ghost" and if Lady Song were harmed, he might indeed lose his head. The Emperor valued Lady Song, a fact unknown to others but known to him. Yet, with the culprits behind the poisoning and the harm to Consort Qin still at large, the Emperor preferred to keep Lady Song out of the limelight. He hoped Lady Song would understand the Emperor's intentions.
Inside Qiu Hua Court, several palace maids whispered among themselves: "Isn't Lady Song the sister of the Noble Consort? Why has she been sent to live with us?"
"What about being the sister of the Noble Consort? Knowing her sister is in the palace yet still eagerly entering to vie for favor, she must not be of good character."
"Keep your voice down! Don't let others hear."
"What's there to fear? She's been sent here, what more can she do? You might not know, but she was originally living in Chao Yang Palace. She offended the Empress and was sent here by her, and she hasn't even been summoned to serve the Emperor yet..."
"Serves her right, competing for favor with her own sister."
"Hey, hey, hey, do you think the ghost of Lady Qi will come for her tonight?"
"Just go find her already!"
…
"What are you all whispering about?" A cold voice carried over, prompting the palace maids to scatter quickly. The maids of Autumn Splendor Court feared two things above all: the ghost of Lady Qi and Lady Zhou herself. No one had ever seen her smile; rumor had it that not even in the emperor's presence did she break into a grin, which is why after summoning her once, the emperor never did so again.
As evening approached, Song Qingying's courtyard had been neatly tidied. Two large red lanterns hung under the eaves of the main building, now lit, casting a refreshing yet warm glow over the small yard. If she could win these people over, her days ahead wouldn't be so troublesome, and this corner would serve as a perfect hideaway from any drama. "When in Rome," she thought, resigned to her fate and determined to make the best of her unavoidable circumstances.
Song Qingying had keenly observed the performance of her maids and eunuchs throughout the day, noting who worked diligently and who merely pretended to.
When evening came for "rewards and recognition," Song Qingying gathered everyone in the main hall. Seated at the head, she placed a purse on the table beside her, its bulging shape hinting at the silver coins inside.
With a smile on her face, seeing her maids weary from a day's work but hopeful for a reward brought a sense of satisfaction. Though not favored by the emperor, Lady Song was known for her wealth, a characteristic trait of the Song family who never lacked for silver.
"You've all worked hard today," said Song Qingying with a smile.
"It's our duty," they replied.
"Hmm," she nodded, picking up the purse, "Good work deserves reward. Lightheart, you're first. Here, five taels of silver for you. Take it!"
Lightheart was momentarily stunned, then quickly knelt to express gratitude: "Thank you for your generosity, Lady Song."
"Rise, and come forward to receive your reward," she said with a smile.
As Lightheart stepped up to take the silver, the weight of five taels felt substantial in her hands. She resolved then and there to serve Lady Song diligently.
"Shanglin, you're next. Four taels of silver for you. Come and claim it."
"Thank you, Lady Song," Shanglin said, having been transferred here from the quarters of an old imperial consort after her demise.
"Both of you showed exemplary performance today. Continue to uphold these standards," Song Qingying encouraged with a smile.
"Yes! We shall serve you with all our heart," they both said, kneeling to express their thanks.
"All right, stand up. Shenbi, you're third. Two taels of silver for you. Come and claim your reward," continued Song Qingying.
Shenbi, usually outperforming Lightheart, felt a pang of dissatisfaction upon seeing her only receive two taels compared to Lightheart's five. It's human nature to feel discontent when comparing one's rewards to others', even if the reward itself was generous by any other measure.
Despite her internal unrest, Shenbi maintained a respectful demeanor and gratefully accepted her reward.
By the end of the day, Song Qingying felt satisfied with only these three individuals. The remaining five, including Xiangqiao, did not meet her expectations. Lightheart was steady and meticulous, focusing on her tasks without idle chatter or deceit. Shanglin, being their leader and evidently experienced within the palace, had the insight and capability. He might have been first if not for Song Qingying noticing his reservations, hence his second-place reward. Shenbi was clever and quick-witted, often the brain behind Lightheart's brawn. Song Qingying valued intelligence but not cunning, which is why Shenbi received two taels.
The remaining five each received a smaller reward of six coins, and though they thanked her, their faces betrayed their dissatisfaction, especially Xiangqiao, whom Song Qingying felt was on the verge of complaint.
Placing the purse back on the table, still looking full, Song Qingying smiled, "Well, the silver is here for the taking, if you're capable enough. In this small courtyard, I can discern who is diligent and loyal and who is deceitful. I'm committed to fair rewards and punishments. Those who received less shouldn't feel aggrieved, knowing full well why. Today is just the beginning; there will be plenty of opportunities for rewards if you serve well. And for those inclined to deceit, be warned, I have my ways of discipline beyond mere deductions."
The others bowed their heads, whether sincerely or not, showing signs of shame and fear, all except Xiangqiao, who wore her discontent plainly on her face.
"What's wrong, Xiangqiao? Do you have something to say?" Song Qingying asked with a smile.
"I dare not," Xiangqiao replied, her expression growing even more troubled.
"Oh, it's not that you don't know, but that you dare not. It seems you don't realize where you went wrong today?" Lady Song's face turned stern.
Xiang Qiao, seeing Lady Song's stern demeanor, felt intimidated yet stubbornly retorted, "I don't know."
Lady Song scoffed, "Today, when Li Gonggong brought rewards from the Empress Dowager, I asked you to give him a reward. You seemed very reluctant and even showed him a displeased face."
Xiang Qiao's face changed, and she lowered her head, "It wasn't intentional."
"Xiang Qiao, remember this well: the Noble Consort has given you to me, you are mine now. And the same goes for all of you. No matter whose people you were before, from now on, you are mine. If even a single matter from this courtyard leaks out, or if anyone causes trouble outside, all of you will be punished. So, stay alert and be wary of the company you keep, lest you get dragged down with them," Lady Song warned sharply.
"We understand," the maids chorused, with Xiang Qiao opening her mouth but growing increasingly fearful inside. Before leaving, the Noble Consort had instructed her to report back to Chaoyang Palace about Lady Song's affairs every few days. Now, that task seemed daunting. If Lady Song were to find out, there'd be no easy way out for her. Xiang Qiao felt Lady Song had a devilish cunning; the Noble Consort's attempts to harm her backfired, and she could miraculously find Liu Zhaoyi's hidden earring...
"Also, I'll be rearranging your duties," Lady Song continued, "First, the small gate connected to Qiu Hua Courtyard must never be left unattended; take turns guarding it. Second, as long as I am in the courtyard, anyone wishing to leave must have my permission. Third, anyone entering the courtyard must register and state their purpose."
Lady Song paused, pleased to see they were intimidated, then added, "Starting today, Shang Lin will be in charge of the courtyard's management. Shang Lin, can you handle it?"
"I will not disappoint you, Lady Song!" Shang Lin, already admiring Lady Song for her grace and tactics, was confident in his future prospects under her.
"Good. Qing Hong and Shen Bi, from now on, you will serve by my side," Lady Song announced.
"Yes!" While Qinghong was fine, Shenbi was overjoyed, quickly forgetting the earlier disappointment of receiving less reward.
"Shanglin, stay. The rest of you may leave," Song Qingying gestured.
Xiangqiao glanced at Song Qingying before retreating with the other maids.
Once everyone had left, Song Qingying asked with a smile, "Shanglin, where did you serve before?"
"Responding to Lady Song, I previously served Lady Chang. After that, I followed arrangements and never served another mistress until you, my second mistress," Shanglin replied.
Song Qingying smiled, pleased, "Good, serving Lady Chang is commendable."
"Very well, I trust you can manage. Go now, and guard the door well. No one is to enter," Song Qingying initially had more to say but felt it unnecessary at the moment and thus refrained.
After Shanglin left, only Song Qingying remained in the room. She spoke lightly, "Come down now, the person hiding above the beam."
Chapter 19
As soon as Song Qingying's words fell, a figure flipped down from the beam, landing steadily before her. Song Qingying, though frightened, remained composed and motionless. The person in front of her was dressed in night clothes, with a black cloth covering their face, revealing only a pair of eyes, and by their figure, appeared to be a woman. Song Qingying silently observed her, waiting for her to speak. If Song's guess was correct, this person wasn't here for her but related to Lady Qi.
"You're very brave," the woman spoke first.
Song Qingying, feeling relieved, responded with a smile, "You mean me no harm, so why should I be afraid?"
"Won't you ask who I am?" the woman added.
Song Qingying glanced at her, admiring her beautiful eyes, and smiled, "No need to ask, I know you are from Qi Cairen's quarters."
The woman's eyes curved into a smile: "You're very clever. If only Ajun were as bright as you."
"So Qi Cairen was teaching Ajun. Such a lovely name," sighed Song Qingying.
"Why do you sigh?" asked the woman.
"Why? For Ajun, for myself, for the women buried in the depths of this palace," Song Qingying replied with a smile, a trace of desolation in her laughter.
The woman was taken aback, "How did you find me?"
Song Qingying turned her head, looking towards the table, "See, a single tear."
The woman stepped closer and indeed saw a tear next to a sachet. Watching Song Qingying discipline a servant from atop a beam reminded her of Ajun.
"Just because of this? You really are clever," the woman remarked with a sigh.
"Yes, and intuition," Song Qingying deduced from the unusual behaviors mentioned by the people of Qiuhua Garden related to Qi Cairen.
"With your beauty and intelligence, how did you end up living here?" the woman inquired.
Lady Song counter-asked, "Is Ah Yun beautiful?"
The woman paused, "Beautiful, but not as much as you. And, she's not as smart as you."
Lady Song smiled, "You're not from the palace, how did you get in?" inwardly wishing, Could you take me out of here?
"How did you know?" the woman asked.
"If you were from the palace, you would know that beauty and intelligence alone don't guarantee favor," Lady Song remarked.
The woman nodded, "You are indeed smart. If Ah Yun had been half as wise, she wouldn't have ended up like this," her eyes reddening.
"You..." Lady Song wanted to offer comfort but didn't know where to start, as she knew nothing about Lady Qi.
Unexpectedly, the woman knelt with a thud, "I beg you to avenge Ah Yun!"
Startled, Lady Song hurried forward to help her up, "I'm not any lady; I'm merely a minor concubine."
"I beseech you to help!" the woman bowed again.
Lady Song sighed, "Please, stand up first, then we'll talk."
Slowly standing, the woman removed the black cloth from her face, revealing a strikingly beautiful and valiant appearance, willing to kneel for Lady Qi's sake.
"First, tell me who you are, your relationship with Qi Cairen, how you entered the palace, and the truth behind Qi Cairen's death," demanded Song Qingying.
"My name is Yu Shuangzi, Ajun was my master and also my dear sister. I sneaked in hidden in a cart delivering meat to the palace. Ajun... she was murdered," Yu Shuangzi explained.
"How do you know?" Song Qingying inquired.
"When I entered the palace, Ajun was still alive but barely breathing. She told me it was the women from that courtyard who had harmed her," Yu Shuangzi said, her eyes filled with rage and sorrow.
Seeing Yu Shuangzi like this, Song Qingying felt a pang of pity, yet evidence was crucial in such matters.
"Do you have any evidence?" asked Song Qingying.
"No... but if Ajun said they were the ones, then it must be them," Yu Shuangzi stated through clenched teeth.
Song Qingying sighed, "You're capable too. How come you're asking for my help? You should be able to handle it yourself."
Yu Shuangzi shook her head, "Ajun only mentioned it was the women from Qiuhua Court, without specifying who. She probably didn't know who exactly was responsible till her death, only that it was them. I can't kill them all; I can only pretend to be a ghost and scare them a bit."
Song Qingying fell silent, realizing this matter was complex and agreeing might invite trouble upon herself.
"With so many noblewomen in the palace, why not seek their help?" Song Qingying was reluctant to get involved; too much time had passed since the death, making evidence hard to find.
Yu Shuangzi said, "I don't trust them."
Song Qingying pondered, "Then why do you trust me?"
"Because you haven't driven me away yet. In front of other noblewomen, I might have already been executed," Yu Shuangzi explained.
Song Qingying smiled, "I'll think about it."
Yu Shuangzi looked at Song Qingying and nodded, warning, "They harmed Ajun, and they might harm you too. Be careful, whether you help me or not."
Song Qingying thought of Zhao Xing, who was good at making her enemies...
"Thank you. Do you have a place to rest tonight?" Song Qingying asked.
"Don't worry about me. When can you give me an answer?" Yu Shuangzi said, covering her face again.
"Let's say tomorrow night. After lights out, come to my room," Song Qingying replied.
Yu Shuangzi nodded and returned to the beams. Song Qingying sat there, trying to recall the original story, which didn't detail this part much. She realized the original story was becoming less helpful.
Song Qingying called for her servants after sitting alone for a while and had a restless night.
Next day, with dark circles under her eyes, Song Qingying decided to visit the three mentioned women before making a decision.
At breakfast, Shen Bi reported, "Early this morning, there were several groups at the small gate, peering in but not entering, very sneaky."
Song Qingying smirked, knowing they were curious about any ghostly disturbances from last night.
"Shen Bi, prepare three gifts. We'll visit those noblewomen today," Song Qingying instructed.
Xiang Qiao, also serving, hesitated before saying, "I left some things in Chaoyang Palace. I'd like to retrieve them."
Song Qingying put down her spoon, and after rinsing her mouth, said, "Go ahead. Extend my regards to the Noble Consort. I didn't sleep well last night, so I won't disturb her today."
As Xiang Qiao had just left, the Household Department sent over gifts, and it wasn't just anyone who came but the Deputy Steward, Eunuch Qian. Shang Lin, recognizing Eunuch Qian, quickly welcomed him: "Eunuch Qian, what brings you here personally?" Shang Lin bowed and led him inside.
"Oh, Shang Lin, when did you get here?" Eunuch Qian recognized Shang Lin.
Shang Lin smiled: "Eunuch Qian still remembers me. I've been with Lady Song for a while now."
Eunuch Qian glanced at Shang Lin and said indifferently: "Hmm, not bad."
Seeing Eunuch Qian's lukewarm attitude, Shang Lin didn't mind; he believed he had chosen the right master.
Lady Song, hearing of the visitor, came out to greet him, knowing such a person shouldn't be offended.
Eunuch Qian, having never met Lady Song before and initially indifferent when tasked by Lu Deli to take good care of her, felt fortunate to have come himself upon seeing her. A person like her, it seemed, was bound to be favored sooner or later.
"Eunuch Qian Gui at your service, Lady Song. I've brought some items for you," Eunuch Qian said respectfully.
Lady Song smiled appropriately: "Thank you for your efforts, Eunuch Qian."
"It's nothing, it's nothing," Eunuch Qian said, turning to the eunuchs accompanying him, "Hurry, bring the items inside carefully, don't bump anything."
Lady Song stepped aside as the eunuchs entered. The gifts this time were far superior to those sent by the Empress. There were fine quilts, high-quality fabrics, porcelain ornaments from the former dynasty, cosmetics, jewelry, tea, and snacks—a lavish display. Lady Song knew this was arranged by Emperor Zhao, thinking it was yet another cause for envy.
"Lady Song, if you need anything in the future, just let Shang Lin know to contact me," Eunuch Qian offered.
Lady Song smiled: "Thank you, Eunuch Qian. I will surely take you up on that offer," signaling Shen Bi with a glance.
Shen Bi cheerfully stepped forward, slipping a hefty purse into Eunuch Qian's hand: "Thank you for your hard work."
Eunuch Qian, feeling the weight of the purse, was even more pleased: "Thank you for your generosity, Lady Song."
Shang Lin escorted Eunuch Qian to the gate of Qiuhua Courtyard, where upon departing, Eunuch Qian remarked to Shang Lin: "You might just have struck it lucky this time! Serve well."
Shen Lin was pleased, confident Song Qingying would be favored: "Thank you for the auspicious words, Director Qian!"
With the arrival of Director Qian's gift, the courtyard became lively. Those with ulterior motives retracted their plans, seeing even the Deputy Director of the Internal Affairs Department showing respect to their mistress. Little eunuch Cui Xi, stationed at the small gate, eagerly smiled at Shen Lin's return, promising better service in the future.
Shang Lin tapped his head lightly: "What are you telling me for? Go tell the talent yourself."
Cui Xi smiled: "No need to say, I'll show it through my actions! Today, I'm guarding the door for Master Shang."
"You finally get it!" Shang Lin laughed, then went back to report to Song Qingying.
Just a few steps away, Shang Lin was stopped by the young maids Qian Xiang and Wan Yun: "Master Shang, we feel the same!"
"Alright, alright! I know what you're thinking. Just do your duties well, and the talent will notice." Shang Lin said, then turned to see another maid, Xin Qing, diligently cleaning the flower bed, and remarked, "See? She's much smarter than you two."
Shang Lin shook his head as he entered the main hall, where Qing Hong was tidying up and Shen Bi was taking inventory. They were organizing the items delivered by Master Cui today. Song Qingying sat in the main seat, not even glancing at these items.
"Shang Lin, is there a rule in the palace that forbids concubines from gardening?" Song Qingying asked as Shang Lin came in.
Shang Lin was stumped: "I... I really don't know."
"I think it should be allowed. Otherwise, where would our backyard's vegetable garden come from?" Song Qingying reasoned.
Shang Lin thought for a moment: "Your Highness, give me a moment. I'll catch up with Master Qian and ask."
Chapter 20
Shang Lin hurriedly caught up with Master Qian. Seeing Shang Lin breathless, Master Qian chuckled, "Does Talent Song have any instructions?"
Shang Lin shook his head: "No, no, there's an abandoned vegetable garden in our backyard. Talent Song was wondering if she could plant some flowers and vegetables there."
"Ah, that's no issue. Let the talent plant if she wishes. However, I don't think the talent will stay in that courtyard for long," Master Qian laughed.
Shang Lin laughed: "The talent is just doing it for fun, I suppose. As servants, we're here to obey and serve."
Master Qian nodded in agreement, praising Shang Lin for his efficiency: "Well done. I'll arrange for someone to bring over some seeds, seedlings, and farming tools."
"Thank you, Master Qian, thank you!" Shang Lin bowed repeatedly, "You must be busy, Master Qian."
Shang Lin hurried back and relayed Master Qian's message to Song Qingying. She smiled, "Then, if you're free today, start tidying up the place."
Xiang Qiao arrived at the Chaoyang Palace and waited for a while before Song Gui Fei returned from Feng Yi Palace. When Cui Wei mentioned Xiang Qiao's arrival, Song Gui Fei quickly summoned her.
"How are things with Talent Song?" asked Song Gui Fei.
Xiang Qiao, intimidated by Song Gui Fei, relayed in detail the events of Song Qingying rewarding and punishing the palace servants the previous day.
After hearing Xiang Qiao out, Song Gui Fei scoffed coldly: "So that's the case. She was sent into the palace with much expectation; how could she be simple-minded? It seems I was the one who misjudged."
Xiangqiao whispered, "Your Highness, the Consort, that courtyard is rather eerie. I've heard it's haunted." Xiangqiao had overheard the palace maids from Qiuhua Court discussing it as she left and it weighed on her mind.
"Haunted? What's going on?" Consort Song frowned.
"The courtyard where Lady Song currently resides was previously inhabited by Lady Qi. Lady Qi passed away last month, and the folks from Qiuhua Court say her spirit still lingers there." Xiangqiao, scared by her own words, hoped the Consort would keep her close and not send her back.
"So many have died in the palace, where would spirits come from? It's nothing but people letting their suspicions get the better of them," Consort Song remarked.
Xiangqiao dared not say more. Consort Song then instructed, "Go back and keep a close watch on Lady Song."
With trepidation in her heart yet unable to voice more, Xiangqiao could only comply. She returned to her original room to fetch something she had intentionally left behind before heading back to Qiuhua Court.
Before Xiangqiao left for Chaoyang Palace, Song Qingying had instructed her to give the storeroom key to Shenbi. Upon returning to the court, her first task was to ask Shenbi for the key.
Shenbi was cunning and could easily guess Song Qingying's intentions. She said, "Sister Xiangqiao, I've already returned the key to Lady Song. You should ask her for it."
Xiangqiao had just returned from Chaoyang Palace, aware that Song Qingying must have reservations about her, making her hesitant to ask for it now.
"Sister Xiangqiao, you're back just in time. Lady Song mentioned wanting to tidy up the vegetable garden. You should hurry and help," Shenbi said with a smile.
Xiangqiao was irritated, "Why don't you go?"
Shenbi gave Xiangqiao a sweet smile, "Lady Song just asked me and Cui Xi to fetch lunch from the dining hall."
Xiangqiao had no choice but to tend to the vegetable garden, increasingly longing to return to Chaoyang Palace. Lady Song was not as easily fooled as Consort Song.
After lunch, Song Qingying selected a few items and took Shenbi to visit others. Before leaving, she deliberately darkened the circles under her eyes with eyebrow powder, making them appear more bruised, then covered them with a layer of fragrant powder, seemingly to mask the dark circles. That day, she also purposely wore a semi-worn palace outfit, adorned with just two plain hairpins.
Puzzled, Shenbi asked, "Lady, what are you doing?"
Song Qingying replied, "Do you know why I'm taking you with me?"
Shenbi shook her head, and Song Qingying said, "I think you're the smartest among them, so be clever when we get there."
Flattered, Shenbi's eyes sparkled, "Should I darken my eye circles too?"
Song Qingying laughed, "No need, let's go."
The first visit was to Lady Chen's. Song Qingying remembered from the original book that although Lady Chen was also a consort, she had been favored for a few days and considered herself of higher status, acting as if she were the leader of Qiuhua Court. However, compared to the heroine, she was of much lower importance, quickly dealt with by the heroine on her path to becoming a favored consort, merely playing a slightly more significant role than Song Qingying's cannon fodder character. The palace maid made them wait quite a while before inviting Song Qingying in, confirming her suspicion that Lady Chen was not easy to deal with and wondering if she had played a part in Lady Qi's demise.
Upon entering Lady Chen's quarters, which were indeed that of someone who had been favored for a few days, the furnishings and decorations were quite exquisite.
"Oh, I heard just yesterday that a beauty like a celestial being had arrived next door. Truly, you are a beauty," Lady Chen sat on the soft couch, not bothering to rise or invite Song Qingying to sit, carrying herself with even greater airs than Consort Song. Song Qingying, noting her round face and plump figure, couldn't help but wonder if this lady really had been favored. Such varied tastes the emperor had!
Song Qingying didn't take offense, smiling, "I was so busy yesterday, I didn't get a chance to visit. Now that I have a moment, I came to apologize first."
Lady Chen was pleased to see Song Qingying flattering her, "Sister, you're too kind. Please, have a seat and let's chat."
Song Qingying sat down with a smile, "It's better here with you, sister. My place... well, let's not talk about it." She looked around as if envious.
"What are you saying? Didn't I see Mr. Qian bring you gifts this morning? All nice things, I didn't see what's in the boxes, but they can't be bad."
Song Qingying forced a smile, "Sister, you don't know. My courtyard... those were just some daily necessities."
Lady Chen had heard about Song Qingying offending the Empress and not being favored by Consort Song. Now seeing her like this, she fully believed it. "A beauty without protection, placed in such a secluded courtyard, what's the use of beauty then?"
Just then, a maid came to report Lady Li's arrival.
Lady Chen didn't make her wait, quickly inviting her in. She glanced at Song Qingying, who seemed indifferent, feeling quite smug.
"Oh, it's lively here today, this must be Lady Song," said Lady Li as she entered.
Song Qingying greeted her, and they exchanged formalities. Lady Li had a completely different look from Lady Chen, with an oval face and almond-shaped eyes, embodying the essence of a delicate beauty.
"Alright, no more formalities, let's all sit and chat," Lady Chen insisted.
Both seated, Lady Li stared at Song Qingying. Song Qingying returned the smile.
"Why does Lady Li stare at me so?" Song Qingying steered the conversation towards the topic of ghosts.
Lady Li chuckled, "How can I not gaze more at such a beauty as Lady Song?"
Song Qingying said, "Please, no jests, sister." She touched her face, adding, "I didn't sleep well last night, had to apply extra palace powder to cover it up."
Hearing Song Qingying mention her poor sleep, the two exchanged glances, with Lady Li asking, "What kept you up, sister? Was it the choice of bedding?"
Song Qingying shook her head, hinting at something more but stopping short.
The two looked at each other again, with Lady Chen encouraging, "You can speak freely, Lady Song."
"Well, I'll speak then, but don't say I'm being alarmist," Song Qingying warned.
They were taken aback, having had a quiet night themselves. Could the "ghost" really have visited next door?
"Go on..." urged Lady Li.
Song Qingying spoke softly, "After a busy day, I should have fallen asleep instantly, but I kept hearing noises in the room, feeling someone at the head of my bed every time I closed my eyes, yet seeing no one upon looking..."
The faces of Lady Chen and Lady Li changed slightly, with Lady Chen asking, "Did you see anything?"
Song Qingying shook her head, "I didn't see, but I heard whispers, as if someone was telling me this was her courtyard, asking me to leave..." She shivered as she spoke.
"Is that... true or false?" Lady Li asked, visibly unsettled.
Song Qingying urgently said, "Would I lie about such a matter? I also came today to ask the two sisters about the courtyard... if there's anything amiss."
Just as Lady Li was about to speak, Lady Chen coughed to silence her, "Lady Song must be unaccustomed to the new courtyard. There's nothing wrong with it."
Song Qingying responded with a doubtful "Oh," but she had no intention of probing further today, saying, "I won't disturb the two sisters any longer. I'm off to see Lady Zhou. Deep Green, share the tea I brought from home with the sisters."
Deep Green hurriedly presented two packets of tea, one to each, Lady Chen and Lady Li. Lady Chen reciprocated with a packet of pastries.
After Song Qingying left, Lady Li whispered to Lady Chen, "Sister, that thing went to bother Lady Song."
"That's good! It spares me the fright. Can't live in peace, and even in death, it's a nuisance," Lady Chen said impatiently.
Lady Li, frightened, gestured for silence, "Sister, don't speak recklessly, lest it hears you!"
"What's there to fear? It's been over a month; if it wanted to harm me, it would have. Being a ghost, it's probably powerless," Lady Chen scoffed.
Lady Li, feeling uneasy as if being watched, soon returned to her room.
Visiting Lady Zhou, who claimed to be unwell and didn't meet her, Song Qingying expressed her concern, left some tea, and departed.
In a low voice, Song Qingying instructed Deep Green, "Inquire about these three ladies from the people of Autumn Flower Court. Anything will do, tell me tonight."
Deep Green, feeling proud and trusted, resolved to keep her valued position from others.
Deep Green was away all afternoon, not even returning for dinner, which Light Red fetched. After dinner, when Deep Green returned looking happy, presumably with much information, Song Qingying dismissed the others to speak with her.
"How did your inquiries go?" Song Qingying asked with a smile.
Deep Green said with a smile, "Mistress, rest assured about the tasks you assign me. Let me tell you everything I found out."
Song Qingying handed Deep Green a pastry, "You must be hungry, eat this to tide you over. I'm not in a rush."
Deep Green felt grateful for having such a considerate mistress and quickly finished the pastry. "Talent, I've finished eating. I'll tell you everything now."
Deep Green spilled all the beans about the information she had gathered.
