Chapter 61
Upon arriving at Song Qingying's Qiyuan Garden, the Virtuous Consort commented, "You and the Imperial Consort really don't seem like you're from the same family. I used to think you were just trying to please Changning by pretending, but now it seems you genuinely have a bit of naivety."
Song Qingying felt that the Noble Consort's words bore no malice and smiled, saying, "We are cousins after all, separated by only a room. I cannot compare to the wisdom and grace of the Noble Consort."
"You don't need to compare yourself with her. Now, in front of His Majesty, you are more favored than she is," the Noble Consort added, "Yesterday, it rained so heavily, yet His Majesty braved the rain to see you. I saw it myself."
Mentioning the events of the previous day made Song Qingying's face turn red. She lowered her head and stopped talking, to avoid making the Noble Consort unhappy by saying too much.
Yet, the Noble Consort seemed not to mind at all and continued, "I always thought our Emperor wouldn't truly care about anyone, but now I see I was wrong. He cares a lot about you, Consort Song."
Song Qingying quickly said, "His Majesty cares about all the consorts, naturally."
The Noble Consort laughed, "That's different. Whether you genuinely don't understand or are pretending not to, let me remind you: although there aren't many people in this palace, you still need to be careful. The Emperor can't always look out for you."
Song Qingying sensed an underlying message and hurriedly said, "Thank you for your guidance, my lady. Could you please clarify…?"
The Noble Consort looked disappointed, as if lamenting her naivety, "Did you see anyone at the Lotus Garden today?"
Song Qingying was startled, realizing there might indeed be an issue with Lady Liu! She responded, "I did see Lady Liu. She even invited me for tea. Is there something wrong with that?"
The Noble Consort said, "I'm only telling you, she is one of the Empress's people. She has been in the Lotus Garden for many days and has never invited anyone else for tea. Guess who she was waiting for? And you dared to drink her tea!"
The more Song Qingying heard, the more frightened she became, "She was waiting for me? Why? I hardly ever go out; how did she know I would definitely go to the Lotus Garden?"
The Noble Consort looked at Song Qingying, "You're not completely foolish. You better find out why she knew you would go. How could you be so naive? Even my Changning is smarter than you."
Song Qingying looked at the Noble Consort gratefully, "Thank you for the hint, my lady."
The Noble Consort huffed, "It's because Changning likes you. You're so clumsy, yet you haven't led her astray. Be more vigilant."
Song Qingying felt she must be even kinder to Changning in the future! But as a consort, didn't the Noble Consort care about Zhao Heng? Knowing Zhao Heng felt differently about herself, didn't it bother her? Song Qingying didn't dare to ask.
After sitting for a while longer, the Noble Consort prepared to take Changning back to the palace, with Changning showing reluctance. The Noble Consort said, "Consort Song is going to catch mice now, will you stay?"
Changning, who was terrified of mice, hastily said she would not stay and would leave together. Song Qingying saw the Noble Consort to the palace gate, and as Changning left, she said, "Consort Song, catch the mice quickly! I don't want to see any mice when I come to play next time!"
Song Qingying repeatedly assured her that she would catch the mice, telling Changning to come and play without worry!
After sending the two off and returning to her inner chamber, Song Qingying found Qianhong kneeling on the ground. As soon as the Noble Consort had spoken, Qianhong knew she had made a mistake. Shenbi, unaware of what had happened, saw Qianhong kneeling and knelt down as well.
Song Qingying naturally trusted Qianhong, but she still didn't ask them to get up immediately. She just quietly observed them.
It was Qianhong who spoke first, "Consort, you may punish me as you see fit. I have no complaints. But please, call for the imperial physician first to check if there was anything wrong with the tea."
Song Qingying didn't believe Lady Liu would tamper with the tea, as the risk would be too great. However, it's better to be safe than sorry. She said, "Let's have Cui Xi call for the physician. You two get up; we'll talk about this later."
Cui Xi quickly summoned the imperial physician.
"What's wrong this time?" the imperial physician asked upon seeing Song Qingying, his mood souring. He had nearly finished reading all the medical texts in the Imperial Medical Bureau and was eager to leave.
"I had some lotus leaf tea today and felt a bit unwell. Please, could you have a look?" Song Qingying requested.
"What lotus leaf tea? Give me your hand!"
Knowing the peculiar temperament of the ancient physician, Song Qingying didn't argue and promptly extended her hand.
The ancient physician quickly took her pulse and, stroking his beard, said, "All is well! It's always the same with the women in the palace! The slightest discomfort and they call for the imperial physician. No wonder those physicians are all mediocre."
Qinghong was relieved to hear that Song Qingying was alright, fearing that the emperor would not have been so forgiving otherwise.
Once the ancient physician left, Qinghong closed the door, stationed Shanglin at the entrance, and knelt before Song Qingying.
"Alright, no need to kneel. Tell me, why did you suddenly suggest we visit the Lotus Garden today?" asked Song Qingying.
Qinghong didn't dare to rise, merely saying, "Yesterday, in the small kitchen, I saw Qingzhi eating fresh lotus seeds and casually asked where they were from. She told me about how beautifully the lotus flowers were blooming in the Lotus Garden. This morning, Qingzhi brought more lotus flowers, saying the pond looked even more beautiful after yesterday's rain. Remembering this, and seeing the pleasant weather and your good mood upon returning from Fengyi Palace, I thought it'd be nice for you to see the lotus flowers."
"So, it was Qingzhi who led you to take me to the Lotus Garden," Song Qingying concluded, realizing that if it hadn't been today, it might have been another day.
Qinghong replied, "I dare not absolve myself of blame, but it was largely Qingzhi's doing."
"Then, Qingzhi must belong to the Empress or Lady Liu. But why would they do such a thing? What exactly do the Empress or Lady Liu want to achieve?" Song Qingying wondered, especially puzzled about the Empress's motives since she had no apparent reason for such actions, being the Empress already, while Song Qingying was merely a favored concubine without any offspring. It seemed more likely to be Lady Liu's doing, but her motives were unclear.
Now understanding the situation, Shenbi angrily said, "No matter what their intentions, they're surely up to no good! I was wondering where those rats in the garden came from. Now I see the kind of rats they are! I'll catch them for you right away!"
"Don't go!" "Hold on!"
Song Qingying and Qinghong spoke in unison, perplexing Shenbi, who asked, "If not to catch the rat, do we keep it around?"
Song Qingying explained, "To catch a thief, one must catch them red-handed. What evidence do you have that she intentionally led me there? Besides, I'm fine now, and she has plenty of excuses to deflect blame."
"You're right," Qinghong agreed, "and we still don't know what Lady Liu intends to do. Capturing her now would be pointless."
Song Qingying nodded, "I will handle this myself, Qinghong, and you must not tell the emperor. The Noble Consort was right; there will be times when the emperor can't protect me. I can't always rely on him for protection."
Qinghong, having been misled by others and fearing the emperor's punishment, agreed with Song Qingying.
Song Qingying continued, "Keep an eye on Qingzhi. If it's really her, she will act again. Not just Qingzhi, but among the newcomers, there might be others. Pay attention to who receives frequent visitors and who often goes out. Even the emperor's personally selected individuals can be swayed by riches; we must not be careless."
Qinghong and Shenbi solemnly agreed.
Song Qingying sighed, "I've just been too comfortable these days, forgetting that this is still the harem."
Throughout the afternoon, Song Qingying felt listless, her thoughts preoccupied with Lady Liu. She leaned towards the theory that the Empress was uninvolved, as the Empress only ever saw the Noble Consort as a rival and never considered her a threat. If it was indeed Lady Liu acting alone, it was likely in pursuit of favor. However, the specifics of her scheme remained unknown, wondering if she intended to use her to reach Zhao Heng...
As evening approached, someone unexpected arrived at Qi Garden to see Song Qingying.
"Lady Yang, the physician!" exclaimed Song Qingying in surprise.
"It's been a while, Consort. How have you been lately?" Yang Ningyu asked with a gentle smile.
"Come, take a seat. Let's have a good chat," Song Qingying invited, as if greeting an old friend she hadn't seen in ages.
Yang Ningyu sat down beside Song Qingying with a smile.
"Where have you been all this time?" Song Qingying inquired.
"I've been in the palace, not allowed to see anyone by the Emperor's orders," Yang Ningyu explained.
Hearing Yang Ningyu mention Zhao Heng, Song Qingying felt a pang of sadness but was too embarrassed to ask if anything had happened between them. She merely commented, "It's unusual to be confined and not allowed to see anyone. Isn't that like hiding a beauty in the golden house?"
"Perhaps it was out of concern for my safety," suggested Yang Ningyu.
Song Qingying, thinking of the Consort Xian incident and still unclear on the details, asked, "What exactly happened? If you can talk about it, please do. If not, it's okay."
Yang Ningyu smiled, "It's not that I can't say, but I've come to bid you farewell and would rather share some other interesting stories."
"You're leaving the palace?" Song Qingying was taken aback.
"Yes. My business here is concluded, and I must return home; there are people waiting for me." Yang Ningyu's rare shy expression made Song Qingying instantly understand that Yang Ningyu had someone special. How wonderful! Song Qingying felt unexpectedly happy.
Song Qingying chuckled, "I see, no wonder you didn't wish to stay in the palace."
Yang Ningyu, looking down with a light smile, confessed, "Even without him, I never wanted to enter the palace."
"Oh! Him! Who might that be?" teased Song Qingying.
Yang Ningyu openly shared, "My fiancé, also my senior brother. We grew up together. We've already set a wedding date."
"That's wonderful," Song Qingying said sincerely. She had once struggled with the guilt of altering Yang Ningyu's life but now felt that destiny had its own plans, alleviating her guilt. Having a childhood love as a partner was far more blissful than being a consort in the palace.
"Yes, truly wonderful," Yang Ningyu smiled, "You'll find happiness too, Consort."
"Well, the palace can never compare to the outside world," Song Qingying said with a laugh.
"If you had the chance to leave, would you?" Yang Ningyu asked.
Song Qingying was momentarily stunned; she couldn't bear to leave Zhao Heng. She didn't want to go out...
Seeing Song Qingying's dazed expression, Yang Ningyu laughed and said, "You see, the path is always one's own choice."
Song Qingying nodded but replied, "Yes, the path is always one's own choice. By the way, where do you live? If one day I really do leave, I'll come to find you."
Yang Ningyu then left her address with Song Qingying. After Yang Ningyu left, Song Qingying hid the note she had left. If one day Zhao Heng dared to let her down, she would go to find Yang Ningyu!
Chapter 62
For several days, Shen Bi and Qing Hong secretly investigated the newcomers. Except for Qing Zhi, the rest seemed honest enough, showing no signs of contact with outsiders except for occasional shirking of duties. Even Qing Zhi appeared honest, speaking little and diligent in her work. If not for the Empress Dowager's reminder, Song Qingying might never have suspected that she was lured to the Lotus Garden.
Song Qingying had been observing the Empress carefully during her visits to the Phoenix Pavilion these days. The Empress's gaze and tone of voice towards her had not changed from before, leading Song Qingying to increasingly believe that this was Consort Liu's own doing. However, Qing Zhi had been behaving well these days, and Consort Liu had not shown herself again. Song Qingying still couldn't understand Consort Liu's intentions. During their conversation that day, they had exchanged a few words, among which one in particular caught Song Qingying's attention: Consort Liu mentioned she had returned from the brink of death. What exactly did she mean by that?
In the blink of an eye, it was the sixth day of the sixth month, the day of Princess Changping's full moon celebration. The weather was exceptionally hot, and Song Qingying felt overheated even in her thinnest palace attire, yet she had to attend the celebration. The gathering of concubines in the Phoenix Pavilion, filled with the scent of makeup, made the heat feel even more oppressive.
Song Qingying, the Noble Consort, and Princess Changning were together. It was a rare opportunity for Princess Changning to see her sister, and she clamored to hold Changping, earning several rebukes from the Noble Consort. Reluctantly, Changning stuck by Song Qingying, asking her to tell a story. Overwhelmed by the heat, Song Qingying recounted the tale of "Frozen," which seemed to offer a cool respite.
Princess Changning was quickly captivated by Song Qingying's story, with even the Noble Consort listening with keen interest. As Song Qingying was in the midst of her storytelling, they heard Lu Deli loudly announcing "The Emperor arrives."
Song Qingying hastily stopped and looked for Zhao Heng. With a smile on his face, Zhao Heng entered. Having not seen Zhao Heng for a few days, Song Qingying's heart raced, her gaze following him closely.
Zhao Heng's eyes swept over everyone, lingering a bit longer on Song Qingying. Noticing that Zhao Heng had seen her, she winked at him and stealthily smiled.
With Zhao Heng's arrival, the full moon banquet began. The Empress personally held Princess Changping, handing her over to Zhao Heng. Zhao Heng briefly held Changping, and after the ceremonial blessings were spoken, he quickly handed her back to the Empress. The weather was hot, and Changping was only wrapped in a thin swaddle, so light and small that Zhao Heng dared not hold her for long.
"The care of Changping falls to the Empress. She seems much bigger than at birth, yet still smaller compared to other children. The Empress must take great care," Zhao Heng said, patting the Empress's hand.
The Empress smiled, "They are all my children; it's my duty to care for them."
Zhao Heng nodded, "Now that there are not many children in the palace, I believe the Empress will take good care of Changping."
The Empress's expression stiffened briefly before returning to normal, "Your Majesty, please rest assured, it is my duty, and I will not fail your trust."
"Hmm, I believe in you, the Crown Prince is doing very well," said Zhao Heng.
Hearing Zhao Heng praise the Crown Prince brought a genuine smile to the Empress's face. In the eyes of others, only the favor of the Emperor towards the Crown Prince truly mattered.
Just as the banquet began, Princess Changping suddenly started crying. The Empress, unable to soothe her immediately, hurriedly took her and the wet nurse to the back.
Sitting between the Noble Consort and Song Qingying, Princess Changning said, "Why is my sister crying? She's not being good."
The Noble Consort quickly said, "Your sister is still very young; you cried like this when you were her age too!"
"Impossible! I never cry." Changning retorted, twisting his neck.
"Why would I lie to you? You cry louder than Changping. The entire harem can hear you!" Shufei teased intentionally.
Upon hearing Shufei's words, Changning got up from his seat and ran to Zhao Heng's side: "Father! Did I used to cry when I was a child? Mother says I cried louder than my sister! Is it true?"
Zhao Heng glanced at Shufei, then his gaze shifted to Song Qingying.
Zhao Heng seriously said, "Hmm, Changning indeed cried a lot when he was young."
Seeing her father confirm it, Changning believed it and pouted, somewhat unhappy. Zhao Heng, finding Changning adorable, held her on his lap. Changning was initially happy to sit on her father's lap, but then she saw Shufei talking to Song Qingying and struggled to get down: "Consort Song must be telling a story. I want to listen to the story."
Originally, Zhao Heng heard about the good relationship between Song Qingying and Shufei and thought it was just superficial, but now he truly saw that Changning liked Song Qingying.
"What story? I want to hear it too," Zhao Heng said, picking up Changning and walking towards Song Qingying and her group.
"It's a story about two princesses!" Changning said proudly, for she too was a princess!
Zhao Heng approached Shufei and Song Qingying, setting Changning down.
Shufei and another got up to salute but were stopped by Zhao Heng, who said to Song Qingying: "Changning mentioned you were telling a story? I would like to hear it too."
"Just rambling to pass the time before the feast, it's nothing refined. Your Majesty might prefer not to listen," Song Qingying said, bowing her head.
Seeing Zhao Heng talking with Song Qingying, Shufei pulled Changning into her arms and turned aside, not looking at them. Song Qingying, finding herself without company, whispered: "If Your Majesty wishes to listen, I could tell you another." She then cast a coquettish glance at Zhao Heng.
Zhao Heng, merely wanting to tease Song Qingying and finding her charming, whispered back: "Good, I'll find time to listen."
Song Qingying whispered even more softly: "The day after tomorrow is my birthday."
Zhao Heng was taken aback, having been so busy he had indeed forgotten, and hastily said: "I'll come tomorrow night."
Song Qingying quickly nodded, and the two seemed almost like secret lovers. The Empress had already returned, and since the Princess Changping was not brought back, it seemed the full moon celebration was just for show. It justified Zhao Heng's magnanimity and the Empress's kindness.
The banquet hadn't ended when Zhao Heng was called away. After his departure, everyone quickly dispersed. Changning, having not finished listening to the story, went back with Song Qingying, and Shufei said nothing.
Song Qingying felt Shufei was acting strangely; usually, she was the instigator and mediator, yet she didn't compete for favor. Today, when Zhao Heng came over, she deliberately gave them a chance. Shufei's behavior was puzzling.
Zhao Heng and several ministers were busy until late before the matter was resolved. Zhao Heng remembered Song Qingying mentioning her birthday, which he had truly forgotten.
"Lu Deli, what do you think would make a good birthday gift for Consort Song?" Zhao Heng leaned back in his chair, taking a moment to relax.
Lu Deli said, "All I know is that gifts should cater to the recipient's tastes. Naturally, the best gift would be whatever Consort Song likes."
"What does she like, then?" Zhao Heng mused softly, more to himself than to Lu Deli.
"All I know is that the consort likes books, nothing more," said Lu Deli.
Zhao Heng shook his head: "No, she doesn't just like books; she likes the mountains, rivers, cultures, and stories described in them."
"It is the Emperor who truly understands the consort," Lu Deli flattered.
"This is going to be difficult... Giving ordinary gifts seems insincere, and what she likes isn't easy to arrange," Zhao Heng mused, chin in hand and tapping on the desk.
After some thought, Lu Deli said, "I have an idea, Your Majesty. Please forgive my boldness, but let me share it..."
Zhao Heng glanced at Lu Deli and said, "Go ahead. You're already guilty of much; this won't make much difference."
"Since the consort enjoys the outside, why not take her out for her birthday?" suggested Lu Deli.
Hearing this, Zhao Heng laughed and said, "Lu Deli, you're quite daring. To suggest such an idea, if the censors hear of it, you'd better be prepared to lose your head."
Lude Li hurriedly said, "This servant didn't say anything. Your Majesty, please pretend you heard nothing. The coral beads gifted by the Eastern Yue Kingdom are both large and red. This servant thinks they would look splendid on Lady Song. Perhaps those could be gifted instead."
"No, I feel the first idea is better. Let's go with that!" Zhao Heng laughed.
"Ah! We're really doing it then! Your Majesty, please be careful, and make sure the censors don't catch wind of this..." Lude Li whispered.
"Tonight, send someone to find Meng Changhuai and tell him to make arrangements. They must be thoughtful and unique. Choose a place in the capital that young ladies adore. I'll take her out tomorrow night and return early the next morning for court." Zhao Heng instructed.
Since the idea was his own, Lude Li had no choice but to agree and went to make the arrangements.
The next day, Song Qingying was in high spirits all day, anticipating Zhao Heng's visit. She was unaware of the grand surprise awaiting her.
As evening fell and the summer heat dissipated, Song Qingying bathed and changed into a newly made palace attire, reclining on her couch waiting for Zhao Heng.
Seeing the palace chamber empty, Qinghong whispered a few words into Song Qingying's ear.
Upon hearing this, Song Qingying immediately jumped up from the couch, excitedly asking, "Is what you said true?"
Qinghong hurriedly said, "Lady, please keep your voice down, lest others hear."
Overjoyed, Song Qingying began spinning around, "I'm so happy! What do I do now? Should I change my clothes? Disguise myself? What if someone recognizes me? Oh, Qinghong, I'm too delighted! How could he... Oh, Qinghong..."
Seeing Song Qingying's ecstatic and incoherent joy, Qinghong laughed and said, "Lady, calm down. It's no joke if people find out."
Song Qingying nodded vigorously, whispering, "You're right! So, what should I do now?"
"I'll help you change first. You can't go out in these clothes. Later, when it's darker, I'll escort you out. Someone will come to meet you, Lady. Rest assured, everything has been prepared by His Majesty," Qinghong explained.
Song Qingying nodded eagerly, her heart swelling with excitement. She had always dreamed of sneaking out of the palace, but never imagined she would have the chance to do so with Zhao Heng. Thinking of Zhao Heng made her heart sweet as honey. That Zhao Heng had thought of this and taken such steps was beyond Song Qingying's expectations.
After changing, Song Qingying paced back and forth in her chamber, impatiently asking Qinghong, "Why isn't it dark yet?"
"When will the person coming for me arrive?" "What if we are discovered?"
Rarely seeing Song Qingying like this, Qinghong could only comfort her, "Lady, rest assured and wait. Everything has been prepared by His Majesty. Just be at ease."
Song Qingying responded, "How can I be at ease? You have no idea how much I wish to go out and see the world!"
Finally, as dusk fell, Cui Xi came looking for Qinghong on some pretense. Qinghong then left the Qi Garden with Song Qingying, disguised as a little eunuch, and returned shortly after with another eunuch who had a similar build to Song Qingying.
Following Cui Xi, Song Qingying's heart raced with nervous excitement. Fortunately, they encountered no obstacles along the way, and Song Qingying smoothly exited the palace gates, leaving the imperial palace behind.
Song Qingying dared not look back, simply keeping her head down and walking forward. Cui Xi led Song Qingying onto a carriage. Song Qingying immediately recognized the disguised Zhao Heng and joyfully exclaimed, "Your Ma..."
But was pulled into a warm embrace by Zhao Heng—
"My lady, you've had me waiting anxiously!
Chapter 63
Song Qingying found herself seated in Zhao Heng's lap, staring at him in disbelief. What did he just call her? My lady? She must have heard it right... How could Zhao Heng be so kind?
Zhao Heng lightly tapped on Song Qingying's forehead, "My lady, what are you daydreaming about? Do you not recognize your husband?"
Clinging to Zhao Heng's waist, Song Qingying cooed, "My lord, why are you so good to me!"
"I don't know, perhaps I owed you in a past life." Zhao Heng helped her up and removed the eunuch's hat from her head, "Let's change out of these clothes first."
Song Qingying nodded, and Zhao Heng handed her a bundle. Opening it, she took out a set of clothes made of fine moon-white fabric, exquisitely crafted and entirely different from the palace attire.
"It's beautiful." Song Qingying caressed the dress and complimented.
"Quick, change into it and let me see. I hear this style is most favored by the noble ladies of the capital," Zhao Heng said with a smile.
"Change here...?" Song Qingying looked around the carriage, feeling somewhat awkward despite being alone with him.
Zhao Heng laughed, "What, is there something I haven't seen yet?"
Blushing, Song Qingying glared at Zhao Heng, "Don't look. Turn your head and cover your eyes."
Zhao Heng chuckled, shaking his head, "You have the choice of letting me change you or changing by yourself while I watch."
"I'll change by myself then..." Turning away, Song Qingying kept a distance from Zhao Heng before she started to change.
The hot weather meant Song Qingying wore only a thin undergarment beneath her eunuch attire. As she took off her outer garment, she felt a burning gaze on her back. Quickly slipping into the dress, she turned to see Zhao Heng watching her with an amused look.
Adjusting the dress, Song Qingying turned to ask Zhao Heng, "Does it look good?"
Zhao Heng nodded, "Beautiful, you always look beautiful." He patted the cushion beside him, "Come sit here."
Obediently, Song Qingying moved closer to Zhao Heng, who straightened her collar and whispered in her ear, "Actually, you look best with nothing at all."
Song Qingying playfully hit him, "You're not serious."
Zhao Heng caught Song Qingying's hand, kissing it gently, "When have a husband and wife ever needed to be serious?"
As the carriage moved away from the palace gate, Song Qingying faintly heard noises outside. Overwhelmed with excitement at being outside the palace, she asked Zhao Heng, "May I pull back the curtain to look outside?"
Zhao Heng replied with a smile, "Of course."
Peeking through a corner of the curtain, Song Qingying was thrilled to see they were on a bustling street. Lanterns hung high, shops lined the street, vendors stood beside one another, and groups of people wandered about – it was lively.
"Wow…" Song Qingying couldn't help but whisper in admiration, "This is wonderful!"
"What's so wonderful?" Zhao Heng, curious, also peeked outside.
"Everything," Song Qingying, leaning closer to Zhao Heng, cooed, "Are we going to stay in the carriage the whole time, or can we walk around?"
Zhao Heng had planned to go straight to the location arranged by Meng Changhuai, considering their safety, but seeing Song Qingying's hopeful look, he nodded, "I'll make arrangements."
Song Qingying nodded vigorously, "Yes, yes!"
Tapping on the carriage, Zhao Heng instructed, "We'll walk from here. Make sure to follow closely."
Someone outside responded, and the carriage soon stopped. An unfamiliar man opened the door, placing a stool in front for them to alight, "My lord, madam, please step down."
Song Qingying, beaming with joy, was eager to jump out and run around the street. But since Zhao Heng remained seated, she waited.
"My lord, please come out," Song Qingying urged Zhao Heng.
Zhao Heng, amused by her eagerness, said, "My lady, there's no rush."
"But there is, I've never seen what's outside the palace, how can I not be in a hurry?" Song Qingying blurted out, not realizing the implication of her words.
Zhao Heng caught the slip, "Never seen the outside? How long have you been in the palace that you haven't seen the capital?"
Realizing her mistake, Song Qingying quickly corrected, "My lord, I misspoke in my haste. Please, it's been half a year since I last saw the world outside the palace."
Zhao Heng temporarily set aside his suspicion and stepped down. Song Qingying, relieved, reminded herself to be more cautious. Excitement can lead to slips of the tongue.
As Zhao Heng alighted, standing beside the stool, he extended his hand to help Song Qingying down. They stopped right in front of a fan seller. Just stepping out, they heard the vendor, "Young master, your lady lacks a fan, buy her one."
Before Zhao Heng could react, Song Qingying had already approached the stall. He signaled for the carriage to move away and joined her.
Song Qingying examined various fans, finding each appealing. Showing Zhao Heng a fan decorated with a maid's image, she asked, "My lord, is this one pretty?"
Zhao Heng smiled, "It's pretty."
Song Qingying then picked up another with a 'wealth and prosperity' motif, "And this one?"
"That's nice too."
After trying several more, Zhao Heng found each to his liking. Song Qingying realized that men's reactions to accompanying women on shopping trips have been the same throughout history.
"Then you choose one for me," Song Qingying challenged Zhao Heng.
Zhao Heng casually selected one embroidered with orchids: "Let's go with this one."
"Hmm, I like this one too. We'll take this one. How much is it?" Song Qingying asked the vendor.
Recognizing the distinguished air of the couple, the vendor assumed their ignorance of the item's true value, quoting, "One silver tael."
Having read many travelogues and studied prices, Song Qingying did not hesitate to put the fan down and walk away with Zhao Heng.
The vendor hurriedly called after them, "Please, don't go."
Zhao Heng couldn't fathom why Song Qingying suddenly lost interest and looked at her quizzically. Song Qingying stopped in her tracks, turned around, and said, "You're being dishonest, merchant. This fan isn't the work of a renowned artist. How can it be worth a tael of silver? Do you realize the penalty for market fraud?"
The vendor, taken aback by her knowledge, quickly replied with a smile, "My lady, please don't rush. I hadn't finished speaking. The price of one tael of silver was for several of these together. I thought you might like to buy a few to switch between them."
Song Qingying responded, "I don't need that many. How much for just this one?"
The vendor hurriedly answered, "Ten wen, ten wen of silver."
Song Qingying scoffed, "Even ten wen is too much."
"Oh, my lady, this is Suzhou embroidery we're talking about. Ten wen of silver is a fair price," the vendor insisted.
"Fine, fine. Consider it support for your business today, but be more honest in your dealings next time." Song Qingying took the fan and gestured for Zhao Heng to pay.
Zhao Heng, amused by Song Qingying's assertiveness, had not expected this side of her. Lacking small change, he called out, "Someone, pay the man."
After saying this, he took Song Qingying's hand and walked away.
Looking back, Song Qingying saw someone was already settling the payment.
As they walked, Zhao Heng laughed, "I never knew my wife had such skills. Truly eye-opening."
Swinging her fan with pride, Song Qingying retorted, "Hmph, that was nothing. He thought we were clueless and tried to deceive us."
"Indeed, thanks to my wife, I was saved from being cheated out of a tael of silver," Zhao Heng chuckled.
Noticing Zhao Heng's apparent disinterest in the surroundings, Song Qingying asked softly, "My lord, have you been out here before?"
In a low voice, Zhao Heng replied, "Not with a lady, no."
"Oh, that's not what I meant!" Song Qingying felt as if Zhao Heng was teasing her.
"I have been out to observe the common folk," Zhao Heng said with a smile.
Song Qingying nodded, and they continued on their way. Observing the bustling streets and listening to the vendors' cries, she recalled from her readings that the dynasty had no curfew, making the capital's nightlife vibrant. "Zhao Heng is truly an exemplary emperor," she praised him silently.
"By the way, where are we going?" Song Qingying asked.
"Oh, weren't you the one who wanted to get off? As your husband, I'll follow your lead," Zhao Heng teased Song Qingying.
Song Qingying chuckled mischievously, "Hee hee hee, Qinghong has already told me, you had plans all along."
Seeing her like that, Zhao Heng found her endearing and, taking her hand, said as they walked, "We're on our way there now."
"I'm so looking forward to it!" Song Qingying exclaimed.
"Hmm, you better think about what gift you'll prepare for my birthday next year. Poor me, I haven't even had a bowl of noodles till now," Zhao Heng said, feigning a sigh.
At his words, Song Qingying actually felt a bit guilty, realizing she hadn't really done much for Zhao Heng. She truly started to ponder.
"What are you thinking about?" Seeing Song Qingying quiet down, Zhao Heng asked.
"I feel like you're too good to me, thinking about how I can repay you," Song Qingying said, looking up and smiling at Zhao Heng.
Zhao Heng whispered in Song Qingying's ear, "As for repayment, I'll ask for what I want," pausing before adding, "Starting tonight!"
Immediately understanding his hint, Song Qingying tilted her head and fluttered her fan, winking at Zhao Heng, "Alright~~"
Hand in hand, they walked on, the scene becoming livelier and more bustling. Song Qingying was dazzled by the sights. In addition to a new fan in her hand, she now sported a hairpin, a jade bracelet on her wrist, and a jade pendant on her waist - none of them rare but all personally chosen and put on her by Zhao Heng.
Seeing Song Qingying's face filled with wonder, Zhao Heng found her amusing, almost as if she had never been to the capital before. Perhaps it was because the Song family's estate was so secluded she couldn't come out.
Past the bustling market area, Zhao Heng led Song Qingying towards a quieter place. The buildings along the road became noticeably more elegant, and the faint sound of music could be heard. Song Qingying thought to herself, it couldn't be a place of romance, could it?
As they walked, Zhao Heng spotted Meng Changhuai.
Meng Changhuai, still recovering from over a month's injury, was waiting there for them. He approached, "My lord, everything is ready."
Zhao Heng nodded, pulling Song Qingying along to follow Meng Changhuai. Song Qingying's heart raced with excitement, eager to see the surprise Zhao Heng had prepared for her!
Chapter 64
Clutching Zhao Heng's hand tightly, Song Qingying followed behind Lu Deli into a courtyard. It was eerily quiet with not a soul in sight, yet brightly lit. Song Qingying couldn't discern any trick, but glanced at Zhao Heng, feeling a sweet warmth in her heart. Regardless of the surprise, just spending the day with him, shopping like any ordinary couple, was more than enough for her.
Meng Changhuai led them across the courtyard to a door, pushed it open, and the three of them entered. Inside was a narrow, empty room. Confused, Song Qingying didn't dare to ask, in case this was a standard feature of homes in the Great Liang Dynasty. Just as she puzzled over it, she felt herself rising. Song Qingying was bewildered; it was an elevator, of all things! She hadn't expected to find such a device here, wondering how it worked.
Zhao Heng, with his arm around Song Qingying's shoulder, softly asked, "Scared?"
"Not scared," Song Qingying shook her head. What was there to be afraid of...
Zhao Heng nodded, visiting this place for the first time himself. He had only heard of a place in the capital beloved by scholars, beauties, and nobility alike. The garden housed the Picking Stars Pavilion, just an inch shorter than the Astronomical Observatory, making it the second tallest building in the capital. They were now in the Picking Stars Pavilion.
"Have you been here before?" Zhao Heng inquired.
Song Qingying, of course, had never visited, but she wasn't sure if the original owner had. Given she was groomed from a young age for the palace, chances of her venturing out were slim. Song Qingying simply replied, "I've always wanted to visit."
Zhao Heng smiled, "So you've heard of this place then."
Song Qingying grew nervous, worrying if her earlier slip of the tongue had aroused Zhao Heng's suspicions, now perhaps testing her. Just as she was about to speak, they steadied, arriving at their destination, narrowly avoiding further scrutiny.
Upon opening the door, Song Qingying saw the characters for "Picking Stars," recognizing it from descriptions of the capital she had read about. This was the Picking Stars Pavilion.
Pretending, Song Qingying nodded, "The Picking Stars Pavilion truly stands tall."
"My lord, everything inside is ready for you and your lady," Meng Changhuai announced.
Hand in hand, Zhao Heng led Song Qingying down from the elevator. Pushing open the door marked with "Picking Stars," a sea of flowers of every season greeted them. Song Qingying gasped in disbelief, "These flowers..."
"Do you like them?" Zhao Heng asked.
"I do. Which woman wouldn't love flowers? But where did these come from? Many aren't in season," she wondered.
Zhao Heng replied, "They have their ways. Don't worry about it; I just want to know if you like it, if you're happy."
Eagerly, Song Qingying nodded, "Happy, of course I'm happy!"
"Come here," Zhao Heng beckoned, leading Song Qingying through the floral display to a terrace, revealing the capital's night panorama. Clutching the railing, Song Qingying admired the distant city lights, a splendid sight.
Before Song Qingying could marvel at the capital's grandeur, fireworks burst forth before the terrace. She covered her mouth in surprise, torn between watching Zhao Heng and the fireworks.
Zhao Heng stepped behind her, resting his hands on the railing, enveloping Song Qingying within his arms, and whispered in her ear, "Do you like it?"
As Song Qingying nodded, another firework soared and bloomed, followed by more. She had never witnessed fireworks from such proximity. Against a backdrop of a starry sky with brilliant fireworks in the foreground, flanked by a sea of flowers and standing beside her beloved who ruled this land, nothing could be more perfect.
Zhao Heng then placed a string of red coral beads around Song Qingying's neck. Touching each round, full bead, she turned and embraced Zhao Heng.
"Not watching anymore?" he whispered close to her ear.
"Watching," Song Qingying turned back, quietly wiping away a tear.
Noticing her subtle gesture, Zhao Heng pulled her into his embrace. The fireworks continued to bloom with fervor, distant cheers accompanying each ascent.
The display lasted a good half-hour before ending. Song Qingying, utterly captivated, leaned heavily against Zhao Heng.
Seeing Song Qingying so engrossed, Zhao Heng scooped her up and carried her into a room adjacent to the terrace.
A table laden with fine wine and dishes awaits them in the room.
"Hungry, aren't you?" Zhao Heng said.
Song Qingying, still in Zhao Heng's embrace and holding onto his neck, eyed the feast before her. Feeling more lucid, she nodded, "Hungry."
Zhao Heng seated Song Qingying in a chair and sat down beside her. He poured a glass of wine for her and one for himself, raising his glass, "Here's to our birthday girl, Qingying. May you have this day and this moment every year."
Holding her glass, Song Qingying, in a daze, said, "The same day every year? No, no, that's too lavish, too extravagant."
Seeing her befuddled before even drinking, Zhao Heng chuckled, "A smile from a beauty is worth a fortune. For my Qingying, even thousands of gold are well spent."
After finishing his drink in one gulp, Song Qingying, hesitant at first, tasted the wine, found it sweet and not at all spicy, and boldly drank it down.
Zhao Heng poured another for Song Qingying and offered her a piece of dessert, saying, "Here."
Song Qingying obediently opened her mouth to be fed by Zhao Heng. After the dessert and feeling a bit thirsty, she drank the wine herself. As she consumed other dishes, she drank glass after glass of the wine as if it were tea. Zhao Heng, seeing her enjoyment, did not stop her, allowing her to drink nearly an entire pot of honeyed wine alone.
After eating and drinking her fill, Song Qingying felt the room spin as she tried to stand, nearly falling over. Zhao Heng quickly caught her, teasing, "That's what you get for overindulging."
"Eh...what's happening? Don't move…" Song Qingying, her vision blurred, thought Zhao Heng was moving, and held his head still.
Zhao Heng, between laughter and tears, said, "Let go. I'll take you somewhere fun."
"Why are you still moving!" Song Qingying shook Zhao Heng's head, a liberty only she could take. Anyone else might have felt their head was being twisted off.
Ignoring Song Qingying's protests, Zhao Heng carried her to the adjacent room with a large bathing pool, originally intending for a shared bath. Given Song Qingying's inebriated state, it seemed Zhao Heng would have to bathe her himself.
"Oh? A swimming pool? I want to swim!" Song Qingying struggled to get down.
Zhao Heng held her tight, "You need to take off your clothes and all these jewels first, be good, wait a moment."
Song Qingying, now even more intoxicated, couldn't care less, but fortunately, Zhao Heng was strong enough to prevent her from escaping.
With one hand, Zhao Heng held her, and with the other, he began to undress her.
"Ah! Scoundrel, libertine, pervert!" Song Qingying slapped at Zhao Heng's hands, who hastened his actions. Song Qingying then tried to bite Zhao Heng's hand. Fearing a bite mark, Zhao Heng let go, leading to both of them falling into the water with a splash.
Song Qingying choked on water, and Zhao Heng, panicked, quickly pulled her up. After coughing for a while and regaining some sobriety, realizing she was drunk, she pinched herself as a reminder to keep silent for the evening to avoid any slip-ups.
Zhao Heng regretted letting Song Qingying drink freely, curious to see her drunk but not expecting her to turn into a little madcap.
"Feeling better?" Zhao Heng asked.
Song Qingying, without speaking, just nodded.
Both drenched, Zhao Heng then said, "I'll help you take off your clothes, but please, don't bite me again!"
Song Qingying bit her lower lip without speaking, only nodding her head heavily again.
Upon seeing Song Qingying's flushed face, misty eyes, and bitten red lips, Zhao Heng found her irresistibly enchanting. He wished he could take her then and there, but remembering her dazed state and fearing she might choke on water again, he reluctantly held back. Zhao Heng had intended for them to play in the water together, but now he hurriedly cleaned her and lifted her out of the water, heading towards the bed.
Placing Song Qingying on the bed, Zhao Heng noticed not just her face, but her entire body flushed red. He greedily gazed over every inch of her skin, ultimately unable to resist and pressing his lips to hers.
The moment Zhao Heng touched Song Qingying, she couldn't help but moan softly. The alcohol made her even more sensitive. Zhao Heng's caresses and kisses felt like countless feathers brushing against her body, leaving her tingling and yearning for more.
Song Qingying continued to bite her lip. Fearing she might hurt herself, Zhao Heng covered her lips with his, prying her teeth apart to greedily savor the intoxicating sweetness of her mouth. Their entwined lips and teeth left Song Qingying even more intoxicated, holding onto Zhao Heng tightly, seeking more.
Feeling Song Qingying's desire, Zhao Heng no longer hesitated and made his move. Song Qingying had already melted, merely waiting for Zhao Heng to quench his thirst.
"Mmm..." As Zhao Heng's lips left hers, Song Qingying bit her lower lip tightly yet couldn't help but moan, overwhelmed by her joy, unable to restrain herself.
Thinking Song Qingying was too shy to make a sound, Zhao Heng whispered in her ear, "Don't hold back, let it out. I love hearing you."
Song Qingying felt his warm breath in her ear and bit her lip even harder.
While kissing Song Qingying's lips, Zhao Heng coaxed, "Come on, let go, stop biting." Seeing her persist, Zhao Heng thrust forcefully, causing Song Qingying to involuntarily cry out "Ah," a sound that taught Zhao Heng how to make her open her mouth.
It was some time before the bed quieted down. Song Qingying had long since become too exhausted to move.
The next day, when Song Qingying woke up, she found herself back in Qi Garden...
Seeing herself properly dressed and lying in her own chamber, still dazed, and realizing it was past the time to pay respects at Fengyi Palace, Song Qingying panicked: "Qinghong! Shenbi!"
Hearing her call, Qinghong hurriedly entered the room.
"Concubine, you're awake," Qinghong said with a smile.
"What time is it now? Why didn't you wake me! What about the Empress Dowager!" Song Qingying said in a rush, trying to get up, only to find her head aching and pains all over her body...
Qinghong hurriedly replied, "Please rest, Concubine. I've already excused your absence to the Empress Dowager through Consort Shu."
Song Qingying sighed in relief, lay back down, and began to recall the events of the previous night. The fireworks were so splendid... The person from last night... Seeing Qinghong giggling, Song Qingying turned away, laughing herself.
Chapter 65
Since that day, Song Qingying and Zhao Heng became inseparably close, with Zhao Heng spending twenty days a month in Song Qingying's palace. Gifts were sent to Qi Garden almost daily. When an emperor favors someone, it's as if he wants to gather all the empire's treasures for them.
Song Qingying had advised Zhao Heng not to be so ostentatious, but he reminded her of the time she had lashed out at him. Zhao Heng simply said, "I dare to spoil you; what do you fear in accepting it?"
With those words, and their recent affection, Song Qingying felt that Zhao Heng had fulfilled his promises to her.
The harem was already small, and with the Emperor favoring Concubine Song exclusively, naturally, some consorts were discontent. Not daring to confront Song Qingying directly, they complained to the Empress. Yet, strangely, the Empress allowed the Emperor's favoritism, not uttering any objections and treating Song Qingying with utmost courtesy, never showing disdain. Rumors spread throughout the harem that the Emperor favored Concubine Song above all, even the Empress had to defer to her.
The rumors were known throughout the palace, and while others were indifferent, Consort Liu, promoted by the Empress, felt aggrieved for not having been summoned to the Emperor's bed, expressing her discontent during a visit to the Empress.
"Empress, with rumors spreading to this extent, will you truly not intervene? You are the Empress, the master of the harem. What does she amount to?" Consort Liu's tone was less than respectful, almost accusatory.
The queen felt displeased upon hearing this. She was aware of the rumors, but it certainly wasn't a courtesan's place to question her actions. With a cold laugh, the queen said, "Lady Liu's tone seems to be even bolder than Consort Song's. It appears that there are many who do not regard this palace in their eyes, aside from Consort Song."
"Your Majesty, please forgive me, I dare not," Lady Liu hurriedly knelt down to beg for mercy.
"Dare not? I see you're quite bold, daring to use my people. Don't think I'm unaware of what happened in the Lotus Garden that day," the queen said, looking at Lady Liu kneeling before her. She had taken a liking to Lady Liu, finding her somewhat resembling Consort Liu, but now it seemed her ambitions were not small either.
Upon hearing the words "Lotus Garden," Lady Liu shuddered slightly: "This concubine acknowledges her guilt."
"Acknowledge your guilt? How so? Do you think I will fall from favor and you're looking for a new backer?" the queen said sharply.
"This concubine dares not!" Lady Liu quickly bowed her head to the ground, knocking her head several times.
"Dares not! Then why did you seek her out!" the queen demanded.
Lady Liu regretted her actions, merely continuing to kowtow without mentioning the incident in the Lotus Garden.
"What? Can't say anything now?" the queen scoffed coldly, detesting people who lacked the ability to compete for favor and only thought of currying favor everywhere.
Naturally, Lady Liu could not reveal her true intentions, only saying, "Your Majesty has misunderstood this concubine, I never intended to cling to Consort Song! Though she is favored today, she is but a consort. What can she offer me? I was promoted by Your Majesty and naturally remain loyal to you! That day, I merely wanted to investigate after hearing a rumor..." Lady Liu paused, then continued, seeing that the queen was not responding, "I heard that when Consort Song entered the palace, the Noble Consort devised a plan to harm both Consort Song and the unborn Princess Changping in the consort's womb."
The queen was momentarily stunned upon hearing this, "Stand up."
Lady Liu breathed a sigh of relief, and the queen then said, "Sit down and speak. I have also heard of this, but what does this have to do with you seeking out Consort Song?"
"Your Majesty, since entering the palace, I have been ill, until one day, I was so sick I nearly died. In my moment of death, I had a dream. In the dream, Consort Song bumped into the consort, and the child in her womb was lost," Lady Liu whispered.
"Absurd!" the queen scolded.
"Your Majesty, I am not lying. The dream was too real! I remember it vividly. I thought it was just a dream, but then someone appeared, making me believe it might not have been a dream," Lady Liu said.
"Who?" the queen asked with a frown, clearly displeased.
"Physician Yang, Yang Ningyu. Your Majesty, I have never met Yang Ningyu before. Her appearance made me doubt that the dream might have been real," Lady Liu whispered.
"Ridiculous, if it's not a dream, then what is it?" the queen said dismissively.
"Your Majesty, I know you don't believe me. Your Majesty, I'll tell you something from the dream that hasn't happened yet. Then you'll know how true my dream was," Lady Liu added.
The queen looked at Lady Liu, "If you dare to fool me with these superstitions, I will make sure you go back to where you came from!"
"This concubine dares not! The matter I'm about to mention concerns His Highness the Crown Prince!" Lady Liu said in a low voice.
Hearing it was about the Crown Prince, the queen was startled, "Speak quickly! What is it?"
"Your Majesty, after hearing what I have to say, you can imprison me or have someone watch me closely. Just go and see on that day, and you will know if what I say is true," Lady Liu said.
"What is it! Speak quickly!" The queen, somewhat believing Lady Liu, urged her to continue.
"In my dream, the Grand Tutor falls into the lotus pond in the Eastern Palace due to drunkenness on the 20th of July this year and dies unnoticed," Lady Liu's voice grew fainter, causing the queen's face to turn pale upon hearing it.
"Nonsense! Utter nonsense!" the queen exclaimed angrily.
"Your Majesty, whether this concubine speaks nonsense, you will know in three days. Just arrange for someone to wait by the Lotus Pond, and you'll see whether my words hold truth. I came today specifically to discuss this, having pondered over it for days. Even if it incurs your wrath and punishment, I hold no grievances," Lady Liu spoke in one breath.
The Empress scrutinized Lady Liu as if she were a mystical creature.
"I understand," the Empress withdrew her gaze, calming her startled heart, and replied indifferently, "But how does this relate to seeking out Lady Song Jieyu?"
"I suspect Lady Song Jieyu might have had a similar prophetic dream because, in my dream, she had already died. I wanted to test her," Lady Liu explained.
"And what did she say?" The Empress was somewhat convinced by Lady Liu's words.
"As soon as I broached the subject, Lady Song Jieyu excused herself and left, so I strongly suspect she's had a similar dream," said Lady Liu.
The Empress looked at Lady Liu again, finding her ordinary yet somehow sinister in appearance. Regardless of the truth in her words, caution was paramount. The Crown Prince's tutor must not come to harm. As for Lady Liu, if her dream was true, she likely held more secrets, necessitating her close supervision. Lady Song Jieyu, for the time being, wasn't a concern—even if she had the same dream, it mattered not.
Lady Liu, head bowed, dared not betray any emotion. She had not merely dreamt; she had lived another life! And she believed Lady Song Jieyu had too, or else she would have been dead by now. Why else would she enjoy such favor? Likely, she had taken advantage, speaking first to the Emperor. That explained the early capture of Prince Gong and Yang Ningyu's departure from the palace. Unfortunately, she was a step too late, now relying on the Empress's intervention.
Peace had reigned in Qi Garden recently, with the Emperor's visits deterring any disturbances. Qingzhi behaved exceptionally well, always proactive but never seeking the Emperor's attention directly. Shenbi began to doubt their suspicions, wondering if their encounter was merely coincidental, given the Consort Shu's words weren't entirely reliable.
Yet, Song Qingying insisted on vigilant surveillance of Qingzhi, demanding immediate reporting of any anomalies. However, over a month, Qingzhi remained unobtrusive, loosening Shenbi's vigilance.
It was this lapse that led to an incident: Qingzhi vanished, unseen for days. When questioned, no one knew of her departure. Song Qingying reprimanded Shenbi harshly for this negligence. Despite extensive searching, Qingzhi remained missing, alive or dead.
