Chapter 81

After the Consort and the Dowager Consort had left, Qinghong remarked, "Your Majesty, please be cautious. There seems to be something off about the Dowager Consort."

Song Qingying smiled lightly, "Yes, it's unclear what her intentions are. If it's merely to trouble me, so be it. But the Third Prince is so young and endearing; it'd be pitiful if she were to use him. Being part of the royal family means not always having control over one's fate."

Today, with two noble ladies visiting Qiyuan Garden, it must be tidied thoroughly.

Sitting and watching the maids hustle, Song Qingying pondered the Dowager Consort's motives. Could she really intend to use the Third Prince against her? If so, she wouldn't let the Dowager Consort off easily. And since the Third Prince was also Zhao Heng's son, it might be wise to alert him tonight...

"Your Majesty, your tea has cooled. Shall I fetch you a fresh cup?" Minxin offered, noticing Song Qingying reaching for her cup.

"Ah, yes, thank you." Song Qingying paused, realizing she had been so lost in thought that she hadn't noticed her tea cooling.

After Minxin replaced her tea, Song Qingying sipped and instructed, "When the Consort and her party arrive, be extra careful, particularly with the princess and the Third Prince. Ensure they don't consume anything inappropriate."

Minxin understood the implications; such schemes of harming one's own to hurt others were not unheard of.

"Rest assured, Your Majesty, I have already given instructions," Minxin assured her.

Song Qingying nodded, confident in Minxin's competence. She was more agile than Qinghong yet steadier than Shenbi. Thinking of Shenbi darkened her mood momentarily—endless palace intrigues were to blame. Zhao Heng's promises seemed far from realization.

"Your Majesty, the Consort and Princess Changning are nearly here," Shanglin announced, snapping Song Qingying back to the present. She hurriedly went to greet them.

Song Qingying had expected them to arrive together but only met the Consort and her daughter at the entrance to Qiyuan Garden.

Song Qingying curtsied, and the Consort inquired, "Has the Dowager Consort arrived?"

"Not yet. I thought you might come together. Please, come in; it's cold outside," Song Qingying ushered them in, prioritizing their warmth.

"It's hard to guess her intentions; she always seems to be plotting something," the Consort whispered to Song Qingying.

Song Qingying chuckled, "If Your Highness doesn't know, then I'm even more in the dark."

"In any case, be cautious. The Consort De has meticulous thoughts and a bold strategy, far surpassing your sister in cunning," Consort Shu whispered softly.

The sister mentioned naturally refers to the former Noble Consort Song. Song Qingying already suspected Consort De of scheming, and hearing Consort Shu's words, her anxiety intensified, darkening her expression.

Seeing this, Consort Shu laughed and said, "There's no need to be so frightened; after all, you have the Emperor's favor, don't you?"

Song Qingying nodded, her worries deepening instead. Consort Shu knew of Emperor Zhao Xin's favoritism towards her. Wouldn't Consort De be aware as well? If she still seeks to trouble me, she must have a full-proof plan. What could it be? Song Qingying felt increasingly uneasy.

Song Qingying welcomed Consort Shu and Princess Changning to the main hall. As soon as Princess Changning sat down, she exclaimed, "Song Xiu Yuan, hurry and tell me a story!"

"What would you like to hear?" Song Qingying gathered her thoughts, knowing she needed to remain calm and collected.

"Snow White!" Princess Changning had heard it several times already.

Consort Shu said, "Even I can tell that story! Aren't you tired of it? Let's choose another."

Song Qingying smiled, "How about 'The Princess and the Pea'?"

"Yes, yes, yes." Princess Changning clapped her hands in delight. Song Qingying knew that any story about princesses would be a hit with Princess Changning, who was a princess herself.

Just as Song Qingying was about to start the story, Shang Lin came to report that Consort De was nearly at the gate.

Song Qingying looked at Princess Changning helplessly, who pouted, "My third brother is so annoying."

"No speaking ill," Consort Shu scolded.

Song Qingying said, "I'll go out to welcome them."

Consort Shu nodded, overhearing Princess Changning muttering under her breath about how she was the first to request a story and how the Third Prince always liked to cause trouble. Consort Shu, with a stern face, said, "Changning! Where are your manners?"

Seeing Consort Shu seemingly really angry, Princess Changning quickly tried to appease her with a smile, "Don't be mad, Mother, I was just saying."

As Song Qingying reached the entrance of Qi Garden, Consort De arrived with the Third Prince. Song Qingying's greeting to Consort De was not as warm as to Consort Shu, merely respectful and proper.

"No need for such formalities, Song Xiu Yuan, it is I who am intruding," Consort De said with a smile.

"With Your Highness gracing Qi Garden, it shines brighter. How could it be an intrusion..." Song Qingying rose, her gaze falling on a maid behind Consort De, it was Yu Shuangzi! Song Qingying momentarily lost focus, quickly averting her eyes and smiling, "Your Highness, the Third Prince, please, Consort Shu and Princess Changning are already here."

Consort De kept her eyes fixed on Song Qingying, not missing her moment of distraction.

Consort De chuckled, "They're early, aren't they?" Meanwhile, Song Qingying's heart pounded. How could Yu Shuangzi be with Consort De? Was she Consort De's person, or had Consort De taken her? If Yu Shuangzi was Consort De's trump card, Song Qingying felt apprehensive, especially since she had tricked Zhao Heng before. Strictly speaking, this was a crime of deceiving the emperor. And now, with the person in Consort De's hands, Song Qingying was uncertain about Consort De's intentions.

Accompanied by Consort De and the Third Prince, Song Qingying dared not look back at Yu Shuangzi, but she knew at least that Consort De was aware of her past deceit towards Zhao Heng. Bringing Yu Shuangzi was deliberate!

Upon Consort De's arrival in the hall, Consort Shu and Princess Changning also rose to greet her. The Princess eagerly said, "With the Third Brother here, it's time for the story!"

Consort Shu, with her sharp eyes, noticed something off about Song Qingying, and the unfamiliar palace maid behind Consort De seemed suspicious. Could there be a connection? Despite Song Qingying's smile, her eyes betrayed her worry. Consort Shu thought to herself that Song Qingying's youth and the Emperor's protection were the only things keeping her safe.

"So, what story would you like to hear?" Song Qingying asked, pushing aside her doubts to address the Third Prince and Princess Changning.

Immediately, Changning exclaimed, "You said we'd hear about the Princess and the Pea!"

The Third Prince quietly took his seat, offering no objections.

Song Qingying then vividly narrated the tale of the Princess and the Pea.

Princess Changning remarked, "If it were me, I would have felt it too! I am indeed a real princess!"

Song Qingying quickly agreed, "Yes, yes, yes!"

Just as Princess Changning was about to speak, a loud "bang" from Consort De's direction drew everyone's attention.

Song Qingying saw the lid still in Yu Shuangzi's hand and instantly understood; Consort De was looking for trouble!

Consort De's expression darkened, "Changning, take your brother to play elsewhere."

Startled by Consort De, Changning looked towards Consort Shu, who nodded in approval. Song Qingying had no choice but to have Minxin take the children away.

As soon as Changning and the Third Prince left, Consort De slapped Yu Shuangzi, forcing her to kneel, with the lid rolling far away. Song Qingying was shocked and wanted to intervene, but fearing this might be a calculated act between the two, she held back.

"Worthless servant! Can't even properly serve tea!" the Imperial Consort angrily exclaimed.

Song Qingying was aware of the Imperial Consort's usual demeanor, always appearing virtuous and tolerant, never having lost her temper in front of others, let alone striking a maid herself. Song Qingying was certain this act was performed for her benefit.

"This servant deserves death," Yu Shuangzi kowtowed in admission of her fault.

"It seems you deliberately sought to disgrace me!" the Imperial Consort kicked Yu Shuangzi on the shoulder, sending her tumbling to the ground.

Song Qingying, observing Yu Shuangzi on the ground, noticed her thin sleeve lift to reveal arms covered in bruises! Shocked, Song Qingying wanted to intervene but was stopped by a look from the Noble Consort. Glancing again at Yu Shuangzi, who had quickly adjusted her sleeve as if she didn't want her injuries to be seen.

"Is a worthless servant really worth such anger, sister? Allow me to serve you tea myself, sister, please calm your anger," the Noble Consort approached the Imperial Consort with a cup of tea.

Naturally, the Empress Dowager could not vent her anger on the Consort Shu, taking the cup and setting it aside: "How could I trouble my sister so. This wretched maid has always been too full of herself, deliberately seeking to disgrace me today. If I do not teach her a lesson, it might lead my sisters to think I am lax in my duties!"

Song Qingying knew these words were meant for her ears; her heart raced with urgency, yet she dared not act rashly.

"Someone, take this wretched maid back to Deyang Palace for me to deal with later!" declared the Empress Dowager.

Could it really end like this? Song Qingying paused, realizing that the Empress Dowager could not afford to make too much of a scene in Qiyuan, mindful of Zhao Heng's opinion.

Song Qingying watched as the eunuch brought by the Empress Dowager dragged Yu Shuangzi away, with Consort Shu casting several warning glances at Song Qingying, fearing she might act impulsively.

"I must apologize to both my sisters for this spectacle. Rest assured, I will deal appropriately with this audacious maid back at the palace," the Empress Dowager said with a smile.

"I haven't seen this girl before; she must be new. Clumsiness is to be expected. Sister, you should relax. There's no use getting upset over this," Consort Shu genuinely helped Song Qingying greatly with these words.

Regaining her composure, Song Qingying saw the Empress Dowager looking at her intently and responded, "It is my lack of hospitality that has upset Your Highness."

The Empress Dowager chuckled, "What does this have to do with Consort Song? It's not as if Consort Song instructed that wretched maid to defy me."

"But this happened in Qiyuan, and naturally, I bear responsibility." The Empress Dowager was clearly provoking her, and though Song Qingying was frustrated, she could only respond thus.

However, Consort Shu said, "The Empress Dowager is right; this has nothing to do with you. By your logic, we shouldn't have come at all. Had we not, this situation would not have arisen."

Rising to leave, Consort Shu added, "Enough of this. Perhaps we should visit Qiyuan less often in the future. Come, Changning, let's return to the palace."

The Empress Dowager, understanding Consort Shu's consistent support for Song Qingying and seeing her ready to leave, called for the Third Prince to depart as well.

Song Qingying escorted them to the courtyard gate.

"Since when did my sister become so benevolent?" remarked the Empress Dowager.

Consort Shu smiled, "It's not so much about being eager to help; I simply enjoy watching the drama unfold."

"Ha, if you wish to watch the drama, then sit back and enjoy; don't rush onto the stage to steal the spotlight," Consort De said before she walked past Consort Shu.

Consort Shu stood still for a moment, then eventually turned back towards Qi Garden.

Chapter 82

As Consort Shu made her way to Qi Garden, she pondered over the day's events. Nearing Qi Garden, she thought better of it and decided to return.

"Mother, what's the matter? Why do you keep coming and going?" Changning asked in confusion, seeing Consort Shu's indecision.

"It's nothing. Just don't go to Qi Garden for now. I'll let you know when you can," Consort Shu replied.

Changning, quick-witted as ever, nodded in agreement.

Inside Qi Garden, Song Qingying, claiming fatigue, curled up on the couch alone, mulling over the day's events. Yu Shuangzi hadn't looked her way even once from beginning to end. What did that mean? Was she trying to avoid implicating her? Yu Shuangzi had been missing for over half a year; had she been with Consort De all this time? And Consort De, what was she planning? Should she take the initiative to speak to Zhao Heng about this... Song Qingying felt overwhelmed.

After much deliberation, Song Qingying decided it was best to come clean to Zhao Heng. Given their current relationship, she believed Zhao Heng wouldn't be too upset. If she continued to hide this, and Consort De used Yu Shuangzi to frame her for a serious crime, even if Zhao Heng wasn't upset, the Empress and the former court officials would be a different story. She might not be spared then.

Having made up her mind, Song Qingying instructed Shang Lin to find Lu Deli and ask the Emperor to make sure he visited Qi Garden that night.

Zhao Heng was already well informed about the goings-on in Qi Garden, including Consort De's tantrum over a servant. When Lu Deli relayed Song Qingying's request for him to visit Qi Garden that night, Zhao Heng thought Song Qingying was seeking a shoulder to lean on. He instructed Shang Lin to reassure Song Qingying of his visit and to take good care of her.

Lately, Zhao Heng had been extremely busy, managing endless affairs until dusk before preparing to visit Qi Garden. At that moment, Lu Deli hurried in.

"Your Majesty, the imperial physician has reported that the Noble Consort is in critical condition," Lu Deli announced.

Zhao Heng paused, realizing it had been a long while since he last visited the Noble Consort. Frowning, he asked, "What happened?"

"The physician says the cold weather has aggravated her old ailment..." Lu Deli hesitated, leaving unsaid the lack of timely medical treatment.

Zhao Heng sighed, "The Empress Dowager has always shown me kindness. Now that she's in such a state, I should pay her a visit."

"I will go see her," Zhao Heng stood up and said, "And someone, please inform Qi Garden that she shouldn't wait for me. I'll head there as soon as I'm done."

Upon arriving at Qiongjing Palace, Zhao Heng was shocked to see how much the Empress Dowager had aged in just half a year, lying there on her bed.

Softly, Zhao Heng called out, "Mother..."

The Empress Dowager opened her eyes, struggled to speak, and finally managed to utter, "Heng'er..."

Zhao Heng's heart softened, remembering how she had cared for him regardless of her intentions. He said, "Mother, how do you feel?"

The Empress Dowager couldn't speak, only shook her head, her hand emerging from the blanket. Zhao Heng hurriedly grasped her hand, "Heng'er is here."

She nodded weakly, seeming to barely hang on, her eyes closing and then opening again, looking at Zhao Heng before closing once more.

Zhao Heng felt a tug at his heart, "Mother..."

The royal physician called out to Zhao Heng, "Your Majesty."

The physician gestured for Zhao Heng to speak aside. Holding the Empress Dowager's hand, Zhao Heng said, "Mother, your son will be right back."

Zhao Heng and the physician stepped aside, where Zhao Heng inquired, "How is the Empress Dowager?"

The physician, looking down, said, "Even if Divine Physician Gu were here, it would be beyond his ability to reverse this."

Divine Physician Gu was a legendary healer, already retired from the royal medical service. Hearing this, Zhao Heng understood the gravity, only asking, "How long does the Empress Dowager have?"

"Only a couple of days left," replied the physician.

Zhao Heng let out a long sigh, "I understand."

Returning to the bedside, Zhao Heng saw the Empress Dowager with her eyes closed, lips slightly parted, seemingly murmuring something. Leaning closer, he couldn't make out what she was saying. Zhao Heng stayed by the window for an hour, but the Empress Dowager never regained consciousness, only occasionally murmuring unintelligibly.

"Let the royal physician stay by her side. I have other matters to attend to and must leave now," Zhao Heng said, then turned to the Empress Dowager, "Mother, I will visit you again tomorrow. Please rest well."

The Empress Dowager showed no reaction, and Zhao Heng sighed again before standing up to leave.

Song Qingying waited anxiously in Qi Garden for Zhao Heng, growing more worried as time passed.

When Zhao Heng finally arrived, bringing a chill with him... Song Qingying hurried to greet him: "Your Majesty, you're finally here!"

Seeing Zhao Heng's gloomy expression, Song Qingying's heart skipped a beat, fearing that Consort De had made her move.

"Your Majesty, what's wrong?" Song Qingying asked softly.

Zhao Heng sighed, "I just visited the Empress Dowager, and she... she's not doing well..."

"Ah..." Song Qingying paused, relieved it wasn't Consort De, "How is the Empress Dowager now?"

Zhao Heng shook his head, "The royal physician says there's no hope left, only a couple of days."

Song Qingying sighed as well, taking Zhao Heng's hand, "Don't be too sad."

"I'm alright," Zhao Heng patted Song Qingying's hand.

"Right, Your Majesty hasn't dined yet, have you?" Song Qingying said.

Zhao Heng nodded, "Yes, I was just about to come here when I got called away."

Minxin, overhearing this and not waiting for Zhao Heng or Song Qingying's instruction, hurriedly went to prepare the meal.

Zhao Heng pulled Song Qingying to sit down, smiling, "Why, feeling aggrieved today? Want to vent to me?"

Seeing Zhao Heng bringing it up, Song Qingying smiled awkwardly, "Let's have dinner, Your Majesty. We can talk about the rest later."

"Alright, we'll talk in bed later," Zhao Heng leaned in close to Song Qingying, smiling.

The palace maids quickly prepared the evening meal and served it. Song Qingying kept Zhao Heng company during the meal. As the night deepened, they finished their dinner and went to bed after washing up.

Song Qingying nestled in Zhao Heng's embrace, contemplating how to broach a certain matter. With Zhao Heng already in low spirits, she hesitated, fearing her words might worsen his mood.

Having seen the Noble Consort, Zhao Heng was reminded of the past and felt naturally sentimental. Unlike before, he wasn't in the mood for playful banter with Song Qingying, offering her a quiet embrace instead.

Song Qingying, noticing Zhao Heng's silence, grew more hesitant. She thought about speaking up several times but couldn't find the words.

By the time Song Qingying finally mustered the courage to call out to Zhao Heng, she found him already asleep, while she lay awake, restless.

Song Qingying realized the urgency of the matter, with the Imperial Consort Yu having made her move. Gently nudging Zhao Heng, she implored, "Your Majesty, please wake up…"

Zhao Heng, groggy, asked, "What's the matter?"

"I have something important to tell you," Song Qingying said, sitting up from his embrace.

Feeling the absence in his arms, Zhao Heng sobered up and, pulling her back, cautioned, "Be careful not to catch a chill. What is it you want to say?"

Without mincing words, Song Qingying began, "First, I must admit my fault. This was all my doing. But please, don't be angry with me or blame me!"

Embracing her tightly, Zhao Heng reassured, "Tell me, when have I ever been angry with you? Even if you tore the heavens apart, I'd mend them for you."

"Then I'll speak, but you must not get angry!"

Song Qingying detailed everything from her encounter with Yu Shuangzhi to the Imperial Consort's intimidating visit, without interruption from Zhao Heng, who listened until she had explained it all.

"Are you angry?" she tentatively asked, seeing his silence.

"Is that all?" Zhao Heng asked softly.

"Yes… I deceived you and kept it from you. Not intentionally, of course. Had the Imperial Consort not brought her today, I might have completely forgotten about her," Song Qingying admitted, sounding aggrieved.

"Alright, let's sleep. I thought it was something serious. You did right by telling me. I've been looking for a reason to deal with the Imperial Consort anyway. Don't worry about it; I'm here," Zhao Heng consoled, patting her back. "Let's sleep."

Song Qingying hugged him tightly, "You're truly kind."

"As an emperor, as a man, how can I not protect the woman I love? From now on, no matter who tries to trouble you, tell me. Don't hide it, don't be afraid," Zhao Heng said. "But you're not keeping anything else from me, are you?"

"No, nothing…" Song Qingying hurriedly assured, then remembered the palace's secret passageway. But that wasn't really keeping it from him, as Zhao Heng might have already known. She recalled that in the book, it was Zhao Heng who discovered it on his own...

"Then good, sleep tight!" Zhao Heng patted Song Qingying gently.

Song Qingying fell silent, finding comfort and warmth in Zhao Heng's embrace, feeling incredibly fortunate to have met him...

Despite trying, Zhao Heng couldn't fall asleep. Soon after, Lu Deli reported from outside that the Noble Consort had passed away.

Chapter 83

After giving the Noble Consort one last look, Zhao Heng instructed the Ministry of Rites to handle her funeral according to her status. Recalling her words about his father, Zhao Heng wondered who he would share his tomb with a hundred years hence. By custom, it should be the Empress, but she wasn't the one in his heart. He felt it was time to make preparations.

The Noble Consort's funeral was conducted quietly, and the palace, already quiet, became even more so with reduced festivities and the onset of winter.

After telling Zhao Heng about Consort De and Yu Shuangzi, Song Qingying left the matter behind to live her simple life, though she kept an eye on De Yang Palace. Surprisingly, Consort De made no moves after that day, puzzling Song Qingying about her intentions.

The year was exceptionally cold, with several snowfalls in the winter months. The Empress decided to change the daily court attendance to once every three days, and then once every five days as the snow continued.

Song Qingying didn't want to attend even once every five days, but this time she had no choice as the Empress summoned them for a discussion, not allowing any excuses.

Now, Song Qingying dressed warmly whenever she went out, never parting with her hand warmer.

Accompanied by Qinghong and braving the snow, Song Qingying headed to Fengyi Palace. The snow was piled high on both sides of the road, with a thick layer on the ground.

"Why does it keep snowing this year!" Song Qingying complained, not recalling any mention of this in the book, probably occurring during a skipped part.

Qinghong added, "Yes, I've never seen such heavy snow lasting this long."

"I used to like snow, but not anymore," said Song Qingying, who, as someone from the south, rarely experienced snow.

Qinghong smiled, "I remember how happy you were when it first snowed this year!"

"Who knew it would be this severe! It's practically a disaster now," Song Qingying remarked.

"Your Majesty should keep quiet to avoid breathing in the cold air," suggested Qinghong.

Song Qingying nodded and remained silent. Upon reaching Fengyi Palace, Qinghong shook off a layer of snow from the umbrella.

"Hmm, why are there so many people today, even those who usually don't show up? Looks like something big is happening. What urgent matter does the Empress have for us in this freezing weather?"

The Empress didn't beat around the bush, "You all must be aware of the heavy snowfall across the country this year."

Everyone nodded in agreement.

The queen sighed and said, "Do you all realize that this snow has become a disaster?"

Everyone, including Song Qingying, gasped in surprise, "Ah..."

The Consort De said, "I've heard some about it from the Third Prince."

Ignoring Consort De, the queen continued, "With the New Year approaching, the common people must be having a hard time. I think we in the harem should also reduce our food and clothing expenses."

As soon as the queen spoke, the concubines fell silent. Due to the continuous heavy snow, the food in the palace had already declined significantly. Further reductions would undoubtedly be hard for them to accept. However, no one dared to counter the queen's words, considering the common people were still suffering from the cold and hunger. Eventually, all the concubines nodded in agreement.

"Furthermore, with the snow disaster affecting many areas, the court will surely need to allocate funds for relief. We in the harem should also contribute to lessen the Emperor's burden. I have donated a thousand taels, and you should donate as you see fit, as a gesture of your support for the Emperor and the common people," the queen added.

Consort De was the first to respond, "Exactly, I will donate eight hundred taels." Naturally, she could not surpass the queen by donating more.

The Consort Shu said, "Then I will also give eight hundred taels."

Seeing that Lin Xiuyi remained silent, Song Qingying spoke up, "Then, this concubine will donate six hundred taels."

Thus, the concubines in the harem donated varying amounts. The queen's initiative was indeed a move to secure a good reputation for herself. However, despite their contributions, the concubines gained nothing in return.

Song Qingying was open-minded. Reputation didn't matter to her; as long as the silver truly helped the common people, she felt it was worth it.

Consort De was the most upset, not only because the queen gained a good reputation but also because the Crown Prince's reputation was flourishing. The Emperor had assigned tasks to the Crown Prince, all of which he had executed excellently. Especially with this snow disaster, the Crown Prince personally went out of the palace for relief efforts. Though only around the capital, his actions were praised by everyone, commending him as a worthy heir. This left little room for the Third Prince, increasing Consort De's anxiety.

"How is she now?" Consort De asked her maid.

"She can now walk around," the maid replied.

"Keep a close eye on her for me. Make sure she doesn't die; she's of great use to me," Consort De said menacingly.

Naturally, the "she" Consort De referred to was Yu Shuangzi. Consort De had not made a move for a long while because during the mourning period for the Empress Dowager, Yu Shuangzi attempted suicide by jumping into a river. Although she was saved in time, the cold had taken its toll, and her desire for death delayed her recovery. Thus, Song Qingying had yet to see Consort De's next move.

However, Zhao Heng was aware of Consort De's actions and had even guessed what she planned for Yu Shuangzi next. If his suspicions were correct, it would save him a lot of trouble.

Busy with the disaster relief across the lands, Zhao Heng rarely visited Qi Garden. Nonetheless, he ensured that the provisions for Qi Garden were not reduced.

New Year's Eve arrived in the blink of an eye, and the snow finally stopped.

Although the snow had ceased, it remained bitterly cold, making even the New Year's palace banquet seem desolate. The snow disaster had collapsed many homes and claimed many lives. As the emperor, Zhao Heng felt responsible for his people and had little desire for festivity, focusing instead on the countless matters awaiting him in the spring.

After the palace banquet, Zhao Heng went to the Empress's palace and went to sleep without uttering a word. The Empress dared not say much; as long as the Emperor still visited, it was enough. Before sleeping, Zhao Heng thought that next year, he should be able to be with Song Qingying.

As the new year progressed, each day was better than the last. However, it took a full half month for the snow in the inner palace to melt completely, and the routine of morning and evening courts was restored to its former state.

Having grown accustomed to laziness, Song Qingying found it somewhat challenging to rise early every day.

"It's said that transitioning from luxury to simplicity is difficult, and I really don't want to go," Song Qingying remarked to Qinghong on her way to Fengyi Palace.

"The weather isn't that cold anymore; Your Highness should indeed come out and walk around," Qinghong suggested.

However, Song Qingying spotted the approaching Consort De from a distance and whispered, "See, if we didn't come out, we wouldn't have encountered her!"

Qinghong also noticed Consort De. She had observed Consort De's unusual behavior in Qiyuan last time, but since Song Qingying didn't elaborate, Qinghong didn't inquire further.

Intentionally slowing her pace, Song Qingying hoped to wait until Consort De passed before proceeding. Yet, Consort De, contrary to Song Qingying's wishes, decided to wait at the crossroads for her. Left with no choice, Song Qingying approached.

"Is Consort De waiting for me?" Song Qingying took the initiative to ask.

"Not at all," Consort De replied with a smile, "I just thought that with another spring upon us, it's time for a change of scenery in the palace."

Confused by Consort De's remark, Song Qingying wondered if it implied a suggestion to the Empress about selecting new concubines. She believed that Zhao Heng would not agree. After these days, Song Qingying was convinced that Zhao Heng would absolutely not consider selecting additional consorts.

"I find the palace scenery quite pleasing as it is," Song Qingying said, looking around and smiling.

Consort De smiled back at Song Qingying, her eyes filled with disdain, thinking, "Let's see how long you can remain pleased with yourself."

Consort De's thoughts were not on selecting new consorts; she was eyeing the positions of the Empress and the Crown Prince.

Chapter 84

After the rain, there were several drizzles, and the weather cleared up and warmed.

Song Qingying recalled that it had been a year since she entered the palace, a year in which more happened than in her previous twenty-some years in her original world. Now, Zhao Heng was devoted solely to her, spending at least one out of every three nights in Qiyuan, hardly visiting any concubines other than the Empress. Naturally, the other concubines had their grievances, occasionally complaining to the Empress about the scarcity of royal heirs, though the Empress turned a deaf ear. Some with more cunning plans tried to encounter the Emperor by roaming around the palace, but the Emperor ignored them as if they were invisible. Over time, the palace residents lost the will to vie for favor. They had no worries about their living needs, except for loneliness.

As for how others were living, Song Qingying couldn't care less; she herself was living comfortably. The recipes she wrote for Zhao Heng would appear on her table every now and then.

"Eh, the imperial kitchen has been quite inventive lately," Minxin remarked with a smile upon seeing today's dishes.

Song Qingying thought to herself, it's not that they're inventive; it's that I have many ideas...

While they were talking, Zhao Heng arrived.

"Didn't you say you wouldn't come today? Why are you here?" Song Qingying greeted him.

Zhao Heng pinched Song Qingying's face: "What, are you not welcoming me?"

"Not at all, how could that be? Please, Your Majesty, take a seat and have dinner," Song Qingying hurriedly said with a smile, assisting Zhao Heng to sit down.

Minxin quickly brought water for Zhao Heng to wash his hands.

"Be careful these next few days," Zhao Heng said.

Song Qingying was startled: "What happened?"

"Consort De," Zhao Heng said.

"Ah... what is she planning?" Song Qingying had almost forgotten about her. Could she still be thinking of targeting me?

Zhao Heng scoffed: "Her? She's far more ambitious than you, aiming high."

Song Qingying nodded: "I know." It was written in the original book, of course, she knew. Consort De wanted her third son to be the Crown Prince, and she herself aimed to be the Empress.

"I have been waiting for her for a long time," Zhao Heng said.

"That's good to hear. But it won't implicate the Third Prince, will it?" Song Qingying asked.

"You are kind-hearted," Zhao Heng remarked, "You even think of my son."

Song Qingying smiled: "That's reassuring. After all, he is still a child. Proper guidance is all he needs."

"Lean in closer," Zhao Heng beckoned Song Qingying with a gesture, and she approached with a smile.

Minxin, standing aside, saw her master's expression change from surprise to realization, then to happiness, wondering what the Emperor and the Empress had discussed...

After Zhao Heng finished speaking, Song Qingying nodded firmly: "I understand, Your Majesty. Please rest assured."

"The dishes were excellent today." Zhao Heng left after dinner. His visit was twofold: to dine with Song Qingying and to remind her of Consort De.

After Zhao Heng's departure, Song Qingying went about as usual, without any special instructions, as if Zhao Heng hadn't visited that day. However, she was already prepared and ready to face any situation.

Song Qingying read for a while as usual before going to bed. However, she felt restless, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep until she finally drifted off. She slept fitfully, waking now and then. By the time of the third watch, there was still no sign of anything amiss, and Song Qingying thought nothing would happen. Just then, she was startled awake by a commotion outside. They were here!

"Qinghong, Minxin!" Song Qingying called out.

"Your Highness!" Both awoke and hurried in upon hearing Song Qingying's call.

"Go and see, what's that noise outside?" Song Qingying asked.

Minxin had barely stepped out when a palace eunuch guarding the door reported: "Sister Minxin, there's a palace maid outside seeking an audience with Her Highness, claiming to be an old acquaintance! She refuses to leave, insisting that Her Highness will see her."

Minxin quickly relayed the eunuch's message to Song Qingying. Song Qingying's heart raced, and she urgently said, "Let her in at once."

Without further questions, Minxin personally went out to escort the visitor in. Under the lamp light, Minxin recognized her at a glance—it was the palace maid previously punished by Consort De in Qiyuan. Could she truly be an acquaintance of their mistress?

Upon seeing her, Song Qingying recognized Yu Shuangzi indeed, but she was no longer the spirited figure she once was. Her complexion was sallow, eyes sunken, lips pale. Song Qingying, reminded of the day Yu Shuangzi had leapt from the beam, felt a surge of compassion. What had Consort De done to her?

Yu Shuangzi, seeing that Song Qingying truly let her in, felt somewhat guilty and muttered softly, "You shouldn't have let me in."

Song Qingying asked, "Then why did you come knocking at my courtyard?"

Yu Shuangzi sighed, "I was compelled, and besides, I wasn't the one who knocked just now. You did well last time; why bother letting me in this time?"

"What exactly happened? How did you become Consort De's maid?" Song Qingying inquired.

"I was captured by her people," Yu Shuangzi said, her eyes flashing with resentment.

"Aren't you skilled in martial arts? How were you captured?" Song Qingying asked, puzzled.

Yu Shuangzi gave a bitter smile, "The palace naturally has many experts, and Consort De has some by her side."

Yu Shuangzi glanced at Minxin, "Her Highness's companion here is also a master."

Song Qingying looked at Minxin, not having known this. Minxin quickly explained, "It wasn't my intention to keep it from Your Highness; the Emperor instructed me not to speak of it..."

"I'm not blaming you, look how scared you are," Song Qingying said.

"With your skills, you couldn't escape?" Song Qingying questioned Yu Shuangzi further.

"Your Highness overestimates me. I only know some basic light body techniques," Yu Shuangzi replied.

"Why do you say I shouldn't have let you in?" Song Qingying continued. She already knew of Consort De's plan as Zhao Heng had informed her earlier that day; now she wanted to test if Yu Shuangzi would be truthful with her.

"Consort De wants to harm you," Yu Shuangzi stated. "Do you know where I just came from?"

Song Qingying shook her head, though she indeed knew; Yu Shuangzi had come from the Eastern Palace.

"I just attempted to assassinate the Crown Prince," Yu Shuangzi revealed.

"What!" Song Qingying feigned surprise, causing Minxin and Qinghong, who were also present, to be startled, understanding the gravity of attempting to assassinate the Crown Prince—a capital offense. Both turned their gaze to Song Qingying.

"Either drive me out or tie me up. I don't want to implicate you," Yu Shuangzi said.

"Then, how is the Crown Prince?" Song Qingying asked.

Yu Shuangzi replied, "The Crown Prince is unharmed."

"That's a relief..." Song Qingying sighed, "Is Consort De trying to frame me for this?"

Yu Shuangzi nodded, "Because of the assassination attempt, besides me, there were several others involved, all from the Song family..."

"What!" Song Qingying was genuinely shocked this time, Zhao Heng hadn't mentioned this to her! Consort De was indeed crafty, even involving members of the Song family.

"Alright, I've told you everything I know, I must leave now," Yu Shuangzi turned to go.

Song Qingying, of course, couldn't let her leave, quickly saying, "Wait, don't go yet."

Yu Shuangzi turned around, "You dare to keep me? The people coming to arrest me will be here any moment. Assassinating the Crown Prince is a death sentence!"

"What exactly did Consort De do to you?" Song Qingying asked.

"None of that matters now. I'm a dead woman walking, I don't want to implicate you. And, thank you," Yu Shuangzi said, attempting to leave again.

At this moment, a commotion arose outside, with faint shouts of "Capture the assassin!"

"Minxin, stop her," Song Qingying urgently said.

Yu Shuangzi, puzzled, turned back, "They're about to catch me outside, and if you don't let me go, you'll truly become the mastermind behind the assassination of the Crown Prince."

Song Qingying smiled, "Without you, there are still those from the Song family. They can't escape and will try to pin the blame on me."

Minxin and Qinghong exchanged glances, understanding now. The Emperor's confidential talk with Her Highness today must have been about this matter; they had no need to worry.

"Aren't you afraid?" Yu Shuangzi asked.

"Afraid? Why should I fear those villains! It is they who should be afraid of us!" Song Qingying declared forcefully.

Yu Shuangzi gave a bitter smile, "I know the Emperor dotes on you, and you have his support, but even his favoritism might not surpass that for the Crown Prince."

"But I didn't attempt to assassinate the Crown Prince," Song Qingying laughed, "Isn't that why you're here? When you're before the Emperor, won't you say it was Consort De who instructed you?"

Yu Shuangzi shook her head wearily: "No, I can't, even if it costs me my life, I cannot implicate Consort De. At most, I can only say it wasn't your doing."

"Oh, I suppose Consort De must have threatened you with the safety of your family or the Qi family, right?" Song Qingying was certain, knowing someone as loyal as Yu Shuangzi would only compromise under such circumstances.

Yu Shuangzi nodded: "You're right."

"But you're mistaken. Once it's brought before the Emperor, what is there to fear from Consort De?" Song Qingying argued.

"This..." Yu Shuangzi found herself at a loss for words, "Can the Emperor be trusted?"

"Why not! Aren't I here?" Song Qingying said, "Besides, isn't the Crown Prince unharmed?"

"Would you really help me?" Yu Shuangzi asked.

Song Qingying smiled: "I'm not just helping you; I'm helping myself. If Consort De is out to harm me, I can't just sit back and wait for her move."

Yu Shuangzi stood there, looking at Song Qingying, who had become even more beautiful and appeared utterly fearless and confident. Last time Consort De brought her over, Song Qingying seemed indifferent; she hadn't expected her willingness to help now.

Yu Shuangzi nodded, making up her mind: "Alright! If that's the case, I believe you!"

At that moment, there was another knock on the door.

Song Qingying commanded seriously: "Minxin, get dressed."

"Let's go, Miss Yu. It's time to make the villains afraid," Song Qingying said.

Chapter 85

Dressed neatly, Song Qingying, accompanied by Yu Shuangzi, surprised the imperial guards at the courtyard entrance.

Seeing Song Qingying herself, the leader of the guards knelt on one knee in haste: "Your Highness, please forgive us!" Everyone knew that Consort Xiuyuan was the apple of the Emperor's eye. They had only knocked to inquire and dared not search Qiyuan Garden.

Song Qingying smiled lightly: "Rise, General. What brings you to knock on the doors of Qiyuan Garden at this hour?"

"Your Highness, there was an assassin reported in the palace, and someone saw the assassin entering Qiyuan Garden. I came to ensure Your Highness's safety," the leader of the guards explained.

"Indeed, the assassin is right here," Song Qingying glanced at Yu Shuangzi beside her.

The guards looked at each other, not having seen any sign of the assassin, unsure if Song Qingying was speaking the truth or not, and no one dared to approach.

"What, you won't apprehend the assassin even when they're right here? If you won't, then I shall personally bring her before the Emperor," Song Qingying said with a hint of a smile.

Speaking thus, Song Qingying led Yu Shuangzi towards Zhao Heng's sleeping quarters.

The imperial guards, unaware of the specifics, naturally couldn't allow Song Qingying to bring a suspected assassin to the Emperor. The leader stepped forward, offering, "Let me escort you, Your Highness."

Song Qingying merely smiled and continued walking slowly towards Zhao Heng's quarters. By this time, the east was beginning to lighten, signaling dawn's approach.

"Do you regret entering the palace now?" Song Qingying asked Yu Shuangzi.

Yu Shuangzi smiled, "No regrets. After all, I got to see her one last time."

Song Qingying nodded, "I would love to visit the south someday."

Yu Shuangzi remained silent, knowing well that it was almost impossible for a consort to leave the palace. Song Qingying added, "Once you see the Emperor, tell him everything that has happened since you entered the palace."

"And you...?" Yu Shuangzi hesitated, remembering she had taught Song Qingying some tricks.

Song Qingying smiled at Yu Shuangzi, "Why do you think I am so confident?"

Yu Shuangzi realized, the Emperor must have been aware of the Consort De's plans all along, otherwise, her schemes couldn't have been so smoothly executed. This made her even less afraid.

The imperial guards following them were confused. How come the Consort Xiuyuan seemed to know this 'assassin' from before? What was going on?

Halfway there, Song Qingying saw the Empress coming towards them with Consort De.

Yu Shuangzi also saw Consort De, pausing in her steps, an involuntary worry rising within her. Song Qingying reassured, "Don't be afraid, I'm here."

The Empress and Consort De quickened their pace upon seeing Song Qingying and Yu Shuangzi.

Consort De feigned surprise upon seeing Yu Shuangzi, "You wretch, how come you are with Song Xiuyuan? Were you the one who attempted to assassinate the Crown Prince and the Third Prince?"

How come there was also something about the Third Prince? Zhao Heng hadn't got the full story, Song Qingying chuckled, "Why would she be with the consorts? Unless, of course, it was you who summoned her to the consorts' side?"

Consort De, caught off guard by Song Qingying's response, turned to the Empress, "Your Majesty, let's not waste words with them, take them down quickly!"

Since learning of the assassination attempt on the Crown Prince, the Empress had been beside herself with rage. Now, with Consort De claiming an assassin was planted by Song Qingying, and seeing Song Qingying with the assassin, the Empress was furious, wishing she could tear Song Qingying apart right then and there.

"Seize them!" commanded the Empress. The eunuchs and a small contingent of imperial guards behind her hurried forward to apprehend them.

"Why the hurry, Your Majesty? I was just taking the assassin to see the Emperor. Why don't we go together? It's up to the Emperor to decide their fate," Song Qingying said.

"To deal with a mere Consort Xiuyuan, I still hold that authority!" The Empress, now skeptical of Zhao Heng, had long felt he was bewitched by this seductress. Other matters aside, when it concerned the Crown Prince, she insisted on taking matters into her own hands.

Song Qingying shook her head, "Your Majesty, please reconsider."

"Seize her at once!" the Empress commanded again.

Yu Shuangzi's face paled, and Song Qingying grew anxious, fearing the Empress might recklessly strike her down. She wondered about Zhao Heng's actual plan.

Since learning of the failed assassination, Consort De had been seething with resentment. Now, she was determined to drag Song Qingying down with her. She glared menacingly at Yu Shuangzi, silently warning her. As long as Yu Shuangzi insisted Song Qingying had orchestrated the plot, along with those from the Song family, Yu Shuangzi's guilt in the assassination would be confirmed.

"Don't touch me!" Song Qingying sternly stopped a eunuch reaching for her arm, "Empress, think carefully. Don't be someone else's pawn!"

The Empress, furious and frustrated, wasn't in the mood to listen. Now that the Emperor had barred her from the Crown Prince, not even allowing her a glimpse after the assassination attempt, she was seething with pent-up rage. Even if Song Qingying were disposed of, the Emperor wouldn't take her life.

"Seize her!" the Empress ordered again.

"What is the meaning of this!" Zhao Heng finally arrived.

Song Qingying glared at Zhao Heng, who responded with a blink.

"Greetings to the Emperor." The guards and eunuchs knelt down, leaving only the Empress, Consort De, Song Qingying standing, and Yu Shuangzi, who stood still, momentarily stunned.

Consort De hurried forward, "Emperor, how is Yunzhao?"

The Empress also inquired, "Emperor, how is the Crown Prince?"

Zhao Heng ignored Consort De, giving only the Empress a glance, "The Crown Prince is fine."

Consort De's heart skipped, fearing the Third Prince might be in trouble. Just as she was about to inquire again, Zhao Heng turned to Yu Shuangzi, "You must be Yu Shuangzi."

Hearing the Emperor mention her name, Yu Shuangzi knew everything Song Qingying had said was true. She quickly knelt down, "This humble girl, Yu Shuangzi, pays her respects to the Emperor. Long live, long live, long live the Emperor!"

"You may rise," said Zhao Heng.

The Empress hastily interjected, "Your Majesty! She is the assassin who attempted on the Crown Prince's life!"

Zhao Heng shook his head, the Empress could be reasonable at times, but whenever it involved the Crown Prince, she would lose all sense of judgment.

"Come with me," Zhao Heng directed.

The Empress was somewhat confused, but Consort De felt her heart sink, sensing an ominous premonition.

Zhao Heng led everyone back to the Imperial Study, and the assassins caught in the Eastern Palace were also brought over.

"Yu Shuangzi, are you the assassin who attempted on the Crown Prince's life? Do you recognize any of these individuals?" Zhao Heng asked as soon as he sat down.

"I am the one who attempted on the Crown Prince's life, but I do not recognize these people. However, I have heard Consort De mention that they are from the Song family," Yu Shuangzi replied.

Yu Shuangzi's statement caused both the Empress and Consort De's expressions to change dramatically.

"Nonsense!" Consort De exclaimed in haste.

The Empress looked incredulously at Consort De, wasn't it said to be Song Qingying's doing?

"Enough, I have the morning court soon. Yu Shuangzi, explain the matter succinctly!" Zhao Heng commanded.

"It was Consort De who instructed me to assassinate the Crown Prince and then frame Consort Xiuyuan," Yu Shuangzi revealed the crucial detail.

Zhao Heng glanced at the Empress, whose face turned ashen. Had she erred again? Why did she always make mistakes?

"Your Majesty, I am wronged! The Third Prince was in the Eastern Palace just yesterday! How could I possibly conspire to assassinate the Crown Prince! It must have been Consort Xiuyuan, yes, and those from the Song family, they must be seeking vengeance for their family!" Consort De knelt on the ground, crying out. She was still unaware if the Third Prince had been injured. If her plan to assassinate the Crown Prince failed and instead the Third Prince was harmed, she wondered how she could ever make amends.

"Enough, these are not people from the Song family. They are my men! I wanted to see just how far you would go, and to show Yun Zhao what kind of mother he has," Zhao Heng said, disappointed.

"No! No!" Consort De, hearing Zhao Heng's words, realized her plans had completely failed.

The opportunity she had painstakingly sought turned out to be a trap the Emperor had laid for her.

Yun Zhao, the Third Prince, her son—where was he now?

Of course, the Third Prince was not injured. He was hiding behind a screen with the Crown Prince, still unable to believe that his mother would use him to attempt the murder of his beloved brother.

Several times the Third Prince wanted to rush out, but was stopped by the Crown Prince.

Eventually, the Third Prince broke free, running out from behind the screen to Consort De, tears streaming down his face: "Mother, why did you do this?"

"Yun Zhao, are you hurt?" Consort De was confused, still thinking those were the assassins she had arranged.

"Mother! Why did you want to kill the Crown Prince brother!" Yun Zhao cried out.

"I..." Consort De, now sobered, knew her fate was sealed, but the Third Prince still had a life to live. She said, "Mother has made a mistake, harbored thoughts she shouldn't have. This has nothing to do with Yun Zhao."

Zhao Heng understood Consort De's intention. Seeing she still had some sense, he did not subject her to physical punishment and had her taken away. He could not execute her in front of their son.

The Empress was already shocked beyond words, not expecting this turn of events. It was all arranged by the Emperor, leaving her feeling powerless.

"Empress, you have greatly disappointed me as well." Having dealt with Consort De, the Empress could not escape blame.

"This consort admits her fault," the Empress said weakly.

The Crown Prince behind the screen also sighed. His mother, the Empress, always became irrational when it came to him. How could this be acceptable?

"Had I not arrived today, were you planning to have Consort Xiuyuan killed? Can't you stay calm in such situations and think things through?" Zhao Heng said in disappointment.

"This consort, admits her fault." It wasn't just about admitting her fault for the Empress, but a sense of tedium and disappointment. On matters involving the Crown Prince, the Emperor didn't even bother to inform her beforehand, seemingly having discussed it with Consort Xiuyuan instead. What kind of Empress was she, what kind of mother to the nation, if not just for show?

"I shall overlook past transgressions for the Crown Prince's sake. You must consider his well-being more!" Emperor Zhao Heng declared.

The Empress, revitalized at the mention of the Crown Prince, remembered she still had him. With Consort De's downfall, no threat loomed over the prince anymore.

"Your servant understands," the Empress bowed deeply, glancing towards the screen as she rose, knowing her son was surely behind it.

"Enough, you may all leave now. Yu Shuangzi, I am aware of everything. You are free to leave the palace," Emperor Zhao Heng announced.

Yu Shuangzi, overwhelmed with joy, initially wanted to stay to serve Song Qingying but realized she was no longer the minor talent in need of her service, and promptly kowtowed in gratitude.

A month later, Consort De passed away in De Yang Palace, reducing the number of ladies in the harem.

Following Consort De's incident, the Empress became reclusive, delegating the management of the Inner Palace to Consort Shu, even the preparations for the Emperor's longevity celebration.

Another year's longevity celebration arrived. Unlike last year, when Song Qingying feigned illness and Emperor Zhao Heng visited her, this year, she reigned supreme in the harem.

Consort Shu, understanding the Emperor's desires for a modest celebration following the winter disaster and knowing his disdain for the festivities, ensured a subdued observance.

Song Qingying had looked forward to the festivities but found the celebration surprisingly modest.

Emperor Zhao Heng chose Song Qingying's quarters over the Empress's that evening, where Song Qingying presented a gift she had prepared herself, sewing him an undergarment, the only gift she felt could truly convey her affection.

"When did you make this? How have I never seen it before?" Emperor Zhao Heng was delighted to see Song Qingying had handcrafted a garment for him.

"Hmph, I had to sneak around behind your back, of course. You just weren't observant enough; my hands are full of pricks from the needle," Song Qingying showed her hands to Emperor Zhao Heng.

Emperor Zhao Heng quickly took her hands, "Oh dear, my darling's tender hands. Let's see where those pricks are. There really are some."

Unable to bear it, Emperor Zhao Heng kissed her hands gently, "I appreciate the sentiment, but please, no more. You needn't trouble yourself with such tasks!"

"But I enjoy it! Why not try it on?" Song Qingying retracted her hands, suggesting playfully.

Emperor Zhao Heng laughed, "Of course, let's!"

Emperor Zhao Heng began undressing himself, Song Qingying unsuspecting of the desire in his eyes, still holding the garment for him to wear. Once stripped, he embraced Song Qingying tightly, showering her with kisses: "Let's wear it later."

"Hey! You're being naughty," Song Qingying giggled as Zhao Heng's kisses tickled her, trying to dodge his affection.

"If I'm not naughty, how can I have you?" Zhao Heng found Song Qingying's lips and kissed her deeply.

Chapter 86

Five years flew by, and Song Qingying, despite her undiminished favor, remained childless. Her unique status in the harem without bearing an heir gave the courtiers a new subject for gossip.

During these years, Emperor Zhao Heng led the Great Liang Dynasty to prosperity and peace. With no affairs to attend, the courtiers turned their attention to the imperial harem.

Once, several ministers, as if in agreement, proposed a selection of consorts, noting the long absence of such an event. Zhao Heng's immediate displeasure led him to assign tasks to these ministers the following day. Hoping for restraint, he was instead met with increased lobbying, frustrating him without end. Despite their loyalty, their persistence troubled Zhao Heng greatly.

Visiting Qi Yuan, Song Qingying noticed Zhao Heng's displeasure and inquired, "What's the matter? Who has upset you?"

Zhao Heng sighed, "It's those old ministers, fixated on holding a selection. Maybe I should just allow it. I won't touch them anyway."

Song Qingying frowned deeply, "What kind of reasoning is that? Why should innocent girls suffer confinement in the palace? Your mindset is fundamentally flawed! Seems my 'brainwashing' hasn't been successful enough!"

Seeing Song Qingying's anger, Zhao Heng quickly apologized, "I was just saying, don't be mad, please."

"I'm not mad! It's just a generational gap with you ancient folks!" Song Qingying turned away, feigning indifference.

Zhao Heng, sensing her anger from her words, hurriedly coaxed, "My treasure, please, don't be upset. I was only speaking in jest. How could I dare? No, no, I really don't want to."

Song Qingying couldn't help but laugh at his earnestness, "That's more like it."

"But the constant nagging from the ministers truly bothers me!" Zhao Heng sighed deeply.

Song Qingying reassured, "People will always have worries. If not this, then something else. This matter is trivial; just ignore them. They wouldn't dare defy your decree, would they?"

"You're right, mainly because they are loyal ministers, not to be harshly punished," Zhao Heng agreed, "All is well, I'll handle it."

"That's my good emperor," Song Qingying smiled, though her heart was heavy with her own concerns, especially as she watched Chang Ning grow lovelier by the day, deepening her yearning for a child of her own.

Noticing Song Qingying's somber mood, Zhao Heng asked, "What's troubling you now?"

Song Qingying sighed, "What do you think?"

Zhao Heng said earnestly, "Perhaps I haven't been trying hard enough! Tonight, I must put in more effort! Instead of worrying here, it's better to try harder!" Saying this, Zhao Heng lifted Song Qingying horizontally and placed her on the bed.

"What are you doing?" Song Qingying was startled by Zhao Heng's actions.

Zhao Heng kissed Song Qingying's face, "To solve your worries!" He then proceeded to undo Song Qingying's clothes.

"It's still daylight!" Song Qingying held her clothes with one hand and pushed Zhao Heng away with the other.

Zhao Heng replied seriously, "Changing the time might just do the trick!"

Song Qingying was amused by Zhao Heng, and somewhere in her heart, she found herself agreeing with him, letting him continue...

Thereafter, Zhao Heng would come to find Song Qingying during the daytime every now and then. Song Qingying let him be, and by the end of the year, she often felt nauseous when eating. After a consultation, the imperial physician announced she was pregnant.

This was great news!

In no time, the news of Song Qingying's pregnancy spread throughout the harem.

Zhao Heng was overjoyed, immediately saying he would move Song Qingying to his own sleeping quarters. Song Qingying initially didn't want to, but considering the palace's dynamics and the hard-won nature of her pregnancy, she agreed to ensure its safety. There was no safer place in the harem than the Emperor's own quarters.

If anyone was unhappy, it was the Empress. She had tolerated the Emperor's favoritism towards Song Qingying all these years, largely because Song Qingying was thought to be infertile. The Emperor had always favored the Crown Prince, and the Empress had let it be. But now, why was Song Qingying pregnant? The Empress was so enraged that she smashed a roomful of porcelain. If Song Qingying bore a son, would the Emperor name him Crown Prince? The more the Empress thought about it, the more she hated herself for being deceived all these years. Yet, she had no chance to harm Song Qingying.

From the day Song Qingying's pregnancy was confirmed, she never again visited the Phoenix Pavilion to pay her respects. She stayed in the Emperor's quarters, and even on rare visits to the Imperial Garden, she was surrounded by a large entourage. Song Qingying was extra cautious, double-checking everything she used.

As Song Qingying's belly grew day by day, the Empress's heart ached more and more.

One day, the Empress encountered Changning in the Imperial Garden and devised a plan. Song Qingying and Changning were very close. Since she couldn't harm Song Qingying directly, she would start with Changning, conveniently framing the Consort for it. Over the years, the Consort had grown increasingly dismissive of her.

After returning to her palace, the Empress began to plot.

Meanwhile, Changning returned to the Consort's palace, where the Consort asked, "Did you go to see Song Qingying again?"

Changning nodded. Now eleven years old, she was a graceful young lady, very fond of Song Qingying after hearing her stories over the years.

The Consort scolded lightly, "You should visit less often."

"Why? Today, my little sister even kicked me," Changning said.

"A sister?" the Consort asked, puzzled.

"Yes, the sister in Lady Song's belly. Today, when I placed my hand on Lady Song's belly, the sister kicked me. Lady Song said it was her way of greeting me!" Changning said with a laugh.

"She really trusts you," the Consort sighed.

"Time reveals a person's heart. After all, we mean her no harm," Changning said.

"No, it's better if you visit less, or rather, not at all until her child is born. It's safer to avoid giving others an opportunity to exploit," the Consort advised sternly.

"Mother, you're scaring me. Who in the palace would dare harm her now?" Changning replied, unconvinced.

"Foolish girl!" the Consort exclaimed angrily, "You've grown dull from being around her too much! I won't argue with you. Just know you are forbidden from visiting her. She will give birth in three months; you are not to go there until then!"

"Alright, alright, I won't go," Changning huffed as she stormed back to her room.

Being closely watched by the Consort, Changning stopped visiting Song Qingying. Song Qingying, meanwhile, focused on her pregnancy, staying inside as her due date approached, no longer visiting the imperial gardens and spending her days in the palace chambers.

One day, wandering in the imperial garden out of boredom, Changning was asked by Cai Xing, "Princess, why haven't you visited Lady Song? She must miss you."

"My mother forbade me," Changning said, frustrated.

Laughing, Cai Xing said, "It's been so long, I wonder how big Lady Song's belly has gotten."

That made Changning really want to visit. She had a special fondness for Lady Song, who, aside from her mother, treated her the best.

Changning whispered, "Let's go secretly then, and don't you dare tell my mother."

Eagerly, Cai Xing nodded, "Don't worry, Princess, I won't tell."

And so, Changning set off with Cai Xing to find Song Qingying.

Meanwhile, the Consort, noticing Changning's prolonged absence, sent people to look for her. After a fruitless search, she grew anxious, especially with the Empress's increasingly grim demeanor and desperate glances. She feared Changning might inadvertently give her enemies an opening.

"Quickly send more people to find the Princess! Drag her back here if you must. Hurry! Send more people towards the Emperor's chambers, now!" the Consort ordered.

By then, Changning was nearly at Emperor Zhao Heng's palace gates. Hearing her name called from behind, Cai Xing urged, "Princess, let's hide. If they see us, the Consort will surely punish you."

But Changning hesitated, "Never mind, let's go back. I haven't entered yet, so mother won't punish me."

Panicked, Cai Xing insisted, "Princess, we're already at the doorstep, let's just take a look inside."

Changning, always quick-witted, immediately sensed something was off with Caixing and said, "Let's not go, let's not go. If you keep urging me, I'll tell Mother, and she'll surely beat you to death."

As Changning spoke, she stared into Caixing's eyes, reading the panic and fear within them. Changning felt relieved, thankful she hadn't gone in.

Just then, Qinghong happened to pass by and greeted them, "Princess, are you here to visit Consort Song? Please, come in. Consort Song was just saying a few days ago that it's been a while since your last visit."

Caixing hastily added, "Yes, Princess, let's go in."

Changning smiled at Qinghong, "Please convey my message to Song Xiuyuan, tell her I'll visit her and the baby after she's born."

After Changning finished speaking, the people sent by the Consort arrived, "Princess! The Consort requests your presence back at the palace!"

"Hmm," Changning responded coldly and went back with them.

Qinghong felt a jolt of unease and, sensing something was amiss, hurried back to inform Minxin, who was more astute.

"Let's not tell the Consort for now, to avoid worrying her. We'll inform the Emperor quietly when he returns," suggested Minxin.

Qinghong nodded in agreement, sensing that something was afoot, though they were yet to understand what exactly it was. Minxin added, "Starting today, we need to be even more cautious. It seems some threats are still lurking."

Qinghong nodded solemnly again.

Upon returning to Shuyang Palace, Changning caught the Consort's eye, who understood immediately and sternly said, "Come with me into the palace!"

Changning obediently lowered her head and followed the Consort.

Once inside, Changning immediately said, "Mother! It was Caixing!"

"What?" The Consort was momentarily taken aback, "What about Caixing?"

"Today, Caixing kept urging me to visit Song Xiuyuan! There's something off about her," Changning said.

The Consort sighed deeply and tapped Changning's forehead hard, "You're lucky you're not completely foolish! Otherwise, we'd both be in grave danger!"

Changning, frightened, whispered, "Who is it?"

The Consort gave her a look, "Who else could it be!"

"The Empress?" Changning barely audibly guessed.

"Now you're scared!" The Consort said, disappointed in her lack of caution.

"What do we do now?" Changning asked.

"Did anyone see you today?" the Consort inquired.

Changning nodded, "I ran into Qinghong. She invited me in, but I didn't go."

"Then we can't hide it," the Consort realized, smelling a strange scent, "What are you carrying? It smells odd."

Changning quickly produced a sachet from her sleeve, "This! Caixing told me to carry this today!"

The Consort scoffed, "What a scheme!"

Startled, Changning asked, "What's in it?"

"Whatever it is, it's certainly not good," the Consort scoffed, realizing the Empress's venomous intent wasn't just towards Song Xiuyan but also aimed at implicating them.

After a moment's thought, the Consort went out, and Changning, not daring to ask more, followed. The Consort ordered as soon as she reached the main hall, "Seize Caixing!"

Hearing this, Caixing knew her plan was exposed and tried to crash into a pillar, but was swiftly stopped by a quick-reacting eunuch.

"Tie her up tightly for me! And gag her!" the Consort commanded angrily.

No one knew exactly what had transpired, but the subordinates showed no mercy.

"I'll step out for a moment. Keep a close eye on her," instructed the Consort.

"I'll come too!" Changning said.

The Consort glared at Changning, "Stay put! Given your involvement in this debacle, wait and see how I deal with you upon my return!"

The Consort went directly to Emperor Zhao and relayed the day's events, handing over the sachet found on Changning to him. Though she didn't explicitly accuse the Empress of orchestrating Caixing's actions, Emperor Zhao could infer from the Consort's account that the Empress was implied.

Such matters couldn't solely rely on the Consort's word. Emperor Zhao comforted the Consort briefly before ordering an investigation. Caixing was taken away by Lu Deli for questioning.

After being subjected to severe torture, Caixing confessed everything. Emperor Zhao showed the Crown Prince Caixing's confession, entrusting him with the resolution of the matter.

Emperor Zhao merely commented, "Your mother seems to have lost her senses."

The Crown Prince, well-groomed by Emperor Zhao, understood why the Empress targeted Song Xiuyan. Despite reassurances that the Emperor would not replace him, the Empress's paranoia persisted. Now, facing her grave mistake, even the Crown Prince couldn't protect her, suggesting, "It seems the Empress needs a period of rest to regain her composure."

Emperor Zhao nodded in approval, satisfied with the Crown Prince's judgment.

The incident was kept tightly under wraps, with Song Xiuyan remaining oblivious to any of it.

By the end of August, Song Xiuyan safely delivered a princess. Emperor Zhao was overjoyed, naming her Chang Le and elevating Song Xiuyan to the rank of Noble Consort.

Emperor Zhao, delighted with the birth of Chang Le, decided to keep mother and daughter in his palace. Song Xiuyan, believing the child needed her father, agreed.

Five years passed without Song Xiuyan having more children, content with just having Chang Le. Yet, the longer she stayed in the palace, the more she yearned to leave. Reminded of Emperor Zhao's promise, she awaited its fulfillment, which seemed forgotten by him, causing her much frustration.

Emperor Zhao had once vowed to abdicate in favor of the Crown Prince once he was capable of ruling, intending to travel with her. Now, with the Crown Prince of age and the imperial grandson three years old, Emperor Zhao appeared to have forgotten his promise.

The Noble Consort was deeply unhappy, a sentiment even young Chang Le could sense, trying various ways to cheer her up. Emperor Zhao, however, seemed unresponsive, exacerbating the Noble Consort's discontent.

One day, Changle was flipping through a book and stumbled upon something. She ran to Song Qingying and asked, "Mother, this seems to be a place name. Where is this?"

Song Qingying took a look and realized it was the address left by Yang Ningyu from years ago. A thought struck her: Zhao Heng still didn't know about the secret passage. Should she take her daughter for a little adventure outside?

"Changle, this is a friend of mine's home. Would you like to visit?" Song Qingying suggested.

"Yes! Yes! Mother, take me!" Changle exclaimed, jumping up and down.

"Shh, quiet down, or your father will hear us," Song Qingying hurriedly covered Changle's mouth.

Changle pursed her lips and nodded vigorously, "Changle understands! Mother, when do we leave?"

"Let me plan a bit! Before that, you mustn't tell your father, or we won't be able to go at all," Song Qingying whispered.

Changle nodded firmly: "Changle won't tell!"

Song Qingying patted Changle's head, "You're such a good girl, much better than your father!"

After five years as the Noble Consort, Song Qingying had her loyal followers, including her trusted aides Minxin and Qinghong.

Song Qingying hinted to Zhao Heng in their conversations that it was time for him to fulfill his promise. However, Zhao Heng pretended not to understand, prompting Song Qingying to think: I gave you the chance; if you don't cherish it, don't blame me!

The next day, after Zhao Heng returned from court to his palace, he found it eerily empty. Song Qingying, Changle, Qinghong, Minxin, Shanglin, Cuixi, and several others familiar to Song Qingying were all missing! Zhao Heng broke into a cold sweat!

"What's going on! Where are the Noble Consort and the Princess!" Zhao Heng roared.

Except for those taken by Song Qingying, everyone else was sent away, clueless about the disappearance of the Noble Consort and Princess.

"Reporting... to the Emperor, we've been here all along, the Noble Consort and Princess never left!" a trembling eunuch replied. Was it magic...?

Standing in the middle of the palace, Zhao Heng felt as if he had lost his soul. Could it be that they were all taken away by Song Qingying, to her world? Why didn't she take him with her? Zhao Heng felt a huge void in his heart.

"Emperor! Look, a note left by the Princess!" Ludeli found a piece of paper in a corner after searching around.

Zhao Heng eagerly read it. The note, in Changle's scribbled handwriting, read: Father, Mother is taking me to visit her friend. Come find us soon.

"Where was this note found?" Emperor Zhao Xing asked urgently.

Lu De pointed to the corner: "Right there."

Hurrying over, Emperor Zhao Xing knelt on the ground, tapping methodically. Lu De, understanding his intention, quickly joined in. And there it was!

"Your Majesty! There's a hollow space beneath!" Lu De exclaimed.

Could there be a secret passage? Emperor Zhao Xing chided himself for not discovering sooner that the palace hid such secrets, which had been uncovered by the mother and daughter duo—or perhaps, Song Qingying had known all along. "Clever Song Qingying!" Emperor Zhao Xing fumed, "Break it open for me!"

Lu De rushed to fetch help, disregarding any mechanisms and directly breaking a hole in the ground. Indeed, there was a tunnel!

Emperor Zhao Xing immediately descended into the tunnel, with Lu De hastily following.

As they moved further away, Lu De suggested, "Your Majesty, this tunnel seems to lead outside the palace. It might be safer to send someone else to search while you attend to important matters."

Emperor Zhao Xing, too, wished to pursue them immediately, but he had significant affairs to manage. He had resolved to abdicate the throne to the Crown Prince, with the abdication ceremony set for three months hence. Song Qingying had been hinting at a promise to be fulfilled, which he planned to surprise her with during the ceremony. Instead, she surprised him first!

"Let's head back. Inform Meng Changhuai to search for the Imperial Consort and the Princess," Emperor Zhao Xing ordered.

"Where should he search?" asked Lu De urgently.

"She's gone to find Yang Ningyu!" Emperor Zhao Xing said through gritted teeth.

Lu De paused, recalling the words on the princess's note. So, the consort's friend was Lady Physician Yang...

The following afternoon, when Song Qingying and her entourage appeared at Yang Ningyu's clinic, Yang Ningyu was astounded.

"Song... you... you all..." Yang Ningyu stared at the girl Song Qingying was leading, who bore a striking resemblance to her, "Have you recovered?" she finally asked.

Song Qingying smiled, "All thanks to Doctor Yang's exquisite medical skills."

Yang Ningyu chuckled, filled with myriad questions, and hurriedly led Song Qingying to the backyard.

Once in the backyard and after making seating arrangements, Yang Ningyu moved to pay her respects, but Song Qingying stopped her: "No need for formalities. We're not in the palace anymore. Please, have a seat."

Yang Ningyu smiled, "After all these years, I never expected you to actually come."

"Hmm, I did say I would come to find you," Song Qingying said with a smile.

Yang Ningyu looked again at the princess: "Then... how did you manage to leave? Wouldn't he... be angry?"

Song Qingying rolled her eyes: "Who cares about him."

Yang Ningyu internally rolled her eyes at the situation, saying, "So, what are your plans? When will you return?"

"We're not going back!" declared Song Qingying.

"Ah... this..." Yang Ningyu was at a loss for words.

"Don't worry, I just came to see you and then I'll leave. I won't bring you any trouble," Song Qingying assured with a smile.

"It's not that, I'm worried about your safety," Yang Ningyu said, glancing at Chang Le again.

"No worries, no one recognizes me. Besides, I've brought a skilled guard with me," Song Qingying laughed, the most important thing was that once Zhao Heng realized she and Chang Le were missing, he would surely come looking for them.

Yang Ningyu knew that since Song Qingying had escaped, she would not return. Still, letting them go like this made her uneasy.

"You've rarely come out, why not stay with me, pretending to be distant visitors here for medical consultation?" Yang Ningyu suggested.

Song Qingying thought it was a good idea and replied, "Then we'll trouble you."

Song Qingying ended up staying at Yang Ningyu's home for a month, yet Zhao Heng did not come! Several times, Chang Le secretly asked Song Qingying, "Mother Empress, does Father Emperor not want us anymore?"

"Nonsense, it's us who don't want him!" Song Qingying said angrily. That dead Zhao Heng, could it be that he didn't notice the note Chang Le lost?

Zhao Heng had already sent Meng Changhuai to secretly protect Song Qingying. Meanwhile, he was in the capital preparing for the abdication.

Just when Song Qingying decided to leave Yang's home for the south, news spread throughout the Great Liang Dynasty that the Emperor had abdicated.

Hearing the news, Song Qingying felt regretful. Zhao Heng was a good emperor... Maybe she shouldn't have pressured him so...

The next day, Zhao Heng found his way to them.

Seeing Zhao Heng, who had lost a lot of weight, Song Qingying was filled with remorse and stood honestly before him: "I was wrong!"

Before arriving, Zhao Heng had steeled his heart many times to severely reprimand Song Qingying, but when he saw her, all his anger dissipated, leaving only longing.

"Father! Chang Le knows her mistake! But why have you only arrived now? Didn't you see the letter Chang Le left for you?" Chang Le said from the side.

"Father has seen it! It's all thanks to Chang Le!" Zhao Heng patted Chang Le's head.

Sensing the moment, Chang Le tactfully withdrew to play, leaving Song Qingying silent.

"Why the silence?" Zhao Heng asked.

"I was wrong... I shouldn't have taken Chang Le out without permission," Song Qingying admitted with a good attitude.

Seeing her like this, Zhao Heng couldn't remain upset: "You're too impetuous. I had a surprise planned for you, yet you ran off."

"I'm sorry," Song Qingying said.

"It's my fault for spoiling you all these years!" Zhao Heng pinched Song Qingying's face, who, realizing he was no longer angry, breathed a sigh of relief, knowing he couldn't bear to be harsh on her.

After a three-day pause, Zhao Heng and his entourage set off for Nan Zhao Mountain, a place Song Qingying had longed to visit.

Upon arrival, Song Qingying immediately fell in love with the place, insisting on spending a year there. Thus, they settled in a village at the mountain's base.

One day, Zhao Heng, accompanied by Song Qingying and Chang Le, went mountain hiking and encountered an elderly man with white hair who struck up a conversation with them.

During their talk, they discovered that this man was the author of "Travels in the South" and "Journeys in the North," known as the Hermit Wu Fang.

Zhao Heng and Song Qingying exchanged a smile, gripping each other's hands tightly.
