Episode 172: The Ties That Bind
As the battling continued to rage at the Johto League championships, Mew and Vincent from New Bark Town were going at it head to head! But Mew's Pikachu and Cyndaquil were quickly eliminated as Vincent gained the upper hand! Then, with the help of her trusty Bulbasaur, Mew was able to make a comeback, ending their battle in a draw! Mew finished with a total of four victory points, just enough to move on to the final tournament! However, time will tell what the fates have in mind, because when the gang checks on the next battle pairings, Mew will be up against this time, but none other than her childhood friend, Gary!
"Wow. You and I will be competing again, and this soon," Mew says.
"Yeah. According to the chart, you and I will be in the second match in the first round," Gary says.
"Yeah," Mew says.
"And look, Harrison is going to be in the very first match," Brock says.
"Hey guys," A voice calls out.
Everyone turns to see Jimmy, Vincent, and Marina.
"Hey guys," Tomo says.
"Hey, we just came to see the next match ups," Vincent.
Marina looks at the chart and says, "Look Jimmy, you're in the seventh match."
"Yeah. It appears so," Jimmy says.
Then Gary turns to Mew, "Hey Mew, you remember this old thing, right?" She reaches into his pocket and takes it out.
Mew looks in Gary's hand and finds the top half of a deactivated Pokéball, bringing a look of shock to her face.
"I remember it. That's the Pokéball when you and I tied," Mew says.
"Yeah, that's right," Gary says.
"I can't believe you kept it," Mew says.
"He kept a Pokéball from when they tied?" Misty asks.
"Well yeah. It actually happened when I first taught Mew how to fish with a fishing rod instead of her hair," Gary says.
"Oh Gary," Mew says.
"Well it's not my fault you caught Magikarps and Goldeen with your hair," Gary says.
"I used to do it all the time before using an actual fishing rod," Mew says.
"Anyway the final tournament's gonna be six on six battling. That means one thing; you will be toast!" Gary says.
Mew smirks, "I wouldn't be so sure about that one, Gary!"
Gary laughs, "See you at the demolition." And walks away.
Later that evening, up in Mew's room, Mew rummages through her backpack and soon brings out a small bag.
"There it is," Mew says.
"Hey Mew, what are you looking for?" Jen asks.
"It's this," Mew says, showing the bag.
She then takes the object out of the bag, revealing her half of the same Pokéball.
"Hey, isn't that the same Pokéball that Gary had?" Brock asks.
"Yeah. The other half, because it broke in two," Mew says, "Awesome. The very first Pokéball that I ever got before I started on my journey. And it was also when Gary taught me how to fish."
Flashback:
Mew is lying down in front of the river and has her braided hair dipped in the water. Soon, Mew feels something tugging her hair.
"I gotcha!" Mew says, and pulls it, revealing a Magikarp.
"A Magikarp!" Mew says, and picks it up.
"Hi Magikarp, glad to see you today," Mew says.
"Karp Karp," (Hello Mew.) Magikarp says.
Then Mew places Magikarp in the river and the Pokemon swims off.
Mew waves goodbye, "Bye."
Mew hears chuckling and looks ahead to see Gary on the other side of the river.
"Hi Gary," Mew says.
"Hey Mew, are you still fishing with your hair?" Gary asks.
"Yep," Mew answers, "What are you today?"
"Fishing," Gary answers.
"I see, but why do you need two fishing rods?" Mew asks.
"Because, today I'm going to teach you how to actually use one," Gary says.
"Huh?" Mew says, confused.
"You see, this is the spot for catching awesome water Pokémon. I used to come here all the time and play with them before I ever got into Pokemon training academy, see?" Gary says.
"That's cool. I always come here to play with my Water Pokemon friends," Mew says.
"I can see that, because it looks like the Magikarp like to play with you," Gary says.
"True, but I like Magikarps, and other Pokemon," Mew says.
"True, however it's a known fact that Magikarp is the weakest Pokémon of them all," Gary says.
Mew giggles, "Kind of funny how they've been considered weak, but they evolved into powerful Pokemon."
"You can say that again. They mainly know Splash Attack, Tackle, and Flail Attack," Gary says.
"True, but some fishermen end up getting Magikarp's Flail attack," Mew says.
"Yeah, and they can be very painful.
Then brings out a book, "Hey, Mew. Have you read this book? It's written by my grandfather, Professor Oak. Read it yet?"
"I've read it. Of course, I've read slowly because I was still learning how to read better," Mew says.
"Good to hear, but you still have a lot to learn," Gary says.
And presents the fishing pole to Mew, "And you can start by learning to use a fishing rod instead of your hair to catch Pokemon. After all, there are larger Pokemon and you'll get dragged away."
"I guess I could give it a try," Mew says.
"Great," Gary says, and tosses the fishing pole to her.
Mew catches the fishing rod.
"Ready for the lesson?" Gary asks.
"Yes," Mew says.
"Alright. Bring your pole back and cast your rod," Gary says, and casts his rod.
"Okay," Mew says, and casts her rod the same as Gary.
"Great," Gary says.
Soon, Mew ends up feeling her line tugging, "I got a bite!"
Gary's line is getting tugged as well.
"I got one too!" Gary says.
The pair begin winding up their fishing lines. That's when they notice.
"Huh?" Mew says, confused.
Gary is shocked, "What? We both caught the same thing?"
They both then bring their catch to the surface and reveal it to be an old Pokéball.
"What is that?" Mew questions.
"A Pokéball?" Gary questions
Mew then begins tugging on her line, but both her and Gary's line are stuck.
"I think it's stuck," Mew says.
Gary begins pulling the line as well, "It's really stuck."
They both begin pulling on the fishing rod and try to get the Pokeball unstuck.
"Pull!" Mew calls out.
"I'm pulling!" Gary calls out.
Both of them pull on their fishing rods as hard as they can. And at last. the Pokéball snaps in half and the pieces land at both their feet.
Mew looks down and picks up her piece, "Well, looks like we broke it."
Gary picks up his piece and says, "It must've been pretty old. The joint's all rusted up.
"Well, I guess, you wanna call it a draw?" Mew asks.
Gary shrugs his shoulders, "Sure, why not."
Mew and Gary look at each other and begin laughing.
Flashback:
"Now I keep it as a good luck charm. It was one of my treasures," Mew says.
"Good luck?" Misty questions.
"Yeah, it carries all my dreams of becoming a great Pokemon trainer, maybe even a Pokemon master. You know, guys, I did lose a battle to Gary once, and I know why. I just wasn't really ready at the time. Until we battled in the Kanto Region. And I'm looking forward to this rematch!"
"Yeah, that's the spirit!" Misty says.
"Just do your best!" Brock says.
"Yeah!" Tomo says.
"True, but isn't tomorrow a day off?" Mew asks.
"That's right," Misty says, "Tomorrow's a day off."
"Tomorrow's a vacation day so everyone can prepare for the victory tournament," Brock says. "You could use that time to work on your battle strategy against Gary."
"Right," Mew says.
The next morning, out by the lake, Team Rocket has set up shop.
Jessie sighs, "Another day, another dollar."
"It looks like today's a day off. So we might not get too much business, you know?" Meowth says.
"Oh. You're right," Jessie replies.
Then James says, "Fret not, fellow teammates. I've got a way to make big bucks, even on a down-market day!"
"Wobbuffet!" (Let's hear it!) Wobbuffet says.
"Fill us in," Meowth says.
Jessie asks, "So, what's the game, James?"
James explains, "A one day sale for all those collector chumps," Then brings out a pin, "The Johto League limited edition Silver Conference commemorative pin! And no collector would be worth his weight in junk without the complete set, right?"
Jessie and Meowth start laughing in admiration.
"Individually numbered, and boxed in a gold case!" James adds.
"Wobbuffet!" (We'll be rich!) Wobbuffet says.
The next morning, Misty, Tomo, Jen, and Molly enter the room
"Good morning! Hungry?" Misty says.
"Yeah. I'm starving," Casey says.
"Morning guys," Mew says.
Everyone looks to see Mew looking at the computer as Brock reads some books with other stacks nearby.
Brock walks over, "Hey, guys."
"Are these all Pokemon books?" Misty asks.
"Yeah. I went to the Pokemon Center and checked them all out," Brock says.
"Well, I guess I'm impressed," Brock says.
Then Casey asks, "Have you been online all night?"
"No. I woke up early to check it out," Mew says, "I want to do some research about Gary and his Pokemon. Last I remember, he has quite a lot of them."
Then Brock says, "I woke up at 6:00 AM and found her trying to work the computer."
"Yeah. I'm still learning how to use them," Mew says.
"You should've asked me for help," Misty says.
"True, but it's probably good to learn by myself," Mew says.
"That's true," Misty says.
Soon, the computer shows Gary's Pokemon lineup.
"Here's Gary's page," Mew says.
Mew then picks on a few pictures. It shows Gary's Umbnreon. He also has a Skarmory, his Arcanine, Scizor, and other kinds of Pokemon.
"Wow. Gary has a lot more Pokemon than I thought," Mew says.
Then Jen says, "Hey, why not take a break and have some breakfast?"
"Yeah. I'm getting hungry," Jen says.
"Sure, I could use something to eat," Mew says.
Later, Mew and the others are having breakfast.
"So, what type of Pokemon does Gary have the most of?" Misty asks.
"Gary's got all kinds, he doesn't really favor one type," Mew says.
"All different types?!" Molly asks, surprised.
"He really is a chip off the old Oak block!" Misty says.
Mew giggles, "Yeah. Gary is like Professor Oak. I think it's what you guys called, 'The apple doesn't fall from the tree.'"
Then Gary says,
"He did. He's been that way for as long as I've known him," Mew says.
Then Brock says, "And since he doesn't prefer one particular Pokemon over another, it'll be a different story than battling someone like Misty with all one type. So putting your team together is crucial."
"You're right," Mew says, "And Gary has gotten stronger since I last saw him."
Mew soon looks up and sees a familiar figure flying down towards them.
Mew notices, "Hey, look, guys!"
Everyone looks and sees Mew's Charizard flying in.
"It's Charizard!" Mew happily cheers.
Soon, Charizard flies in and lands on the ground. Mew, Pikachu, and Eevee happily run over and give him a hug.
"Charizard?" Misty and Jen question.
"Uh huh. I made a phone call to Liza late last night," Brock says.
"Am I glad to see you. Thanks. You sure came at a great time," Mew happily says.
Charizard roars happily before Mew looks over and sees Gary.
"It's Gary," Molly says.
"Morning Gary," Mew says.
"Morning, Mew," Gary says.
The two look at each other with determination.
Just then, Professor Oak suddenly appears, "This calls for a poem!
Both trainers are shocked and surprised by the sudden appearance of Professor Oak.
"Professor Oak!" Mew says, shocked.
"Grandpa!" Gary adds, just as shocked.
Professor Oak then says, "Rivals, now they meet. Gary, Mew, to compete."
Then Adriana says, "Brilliant!"
"Mom?" Gary questions.
Everyone walks over to say hi.
"Hi there," Jen says.
"It's been a long time," Brock says.
"Hey guys!" Tracey's voice calls out.
Everyone turns to see Tracey, Spencer, Diana, and Schuyler.
"We just had to come," Daisy says.
"To cheer you both on!" Professor Oak says.
"Thank you everyone," Mew says.
"It is the victory tournament! I just had to see it live," Adriana says.
"My, my, my. You two will be facing off again, eh?" Professor Oak says.
"Uh, yeah," Gary says.
"Yep," Mew says.
Professor Oak says, "Well, lighten up and relax, you two. If you both keep acting this tense, by tomorrow, you won't even be able to compete."
"Guess you're right," Gary says.
"Now that's more like it. I trust you brought your Pokédexes," Professor Oak say
Later, Professor Oak explains the reason behind his comment.
"You see, I've been gathering much new Pokémon data, since you've been traveling in the Johto region. This is the perfect opportunity for me to update each of your Pokedexes," Professor Oak says.
Soon, the updates are complete and the professor hands the two trainers their Pokedexes.
"Now, you're all set," Professor Oak says.
"Thanks, Professor," Mew says.
"Thanks a lot, grandpa," Gary says.
"I'll tell you one thing, there's always a lot more to learn," Mew says.
"Have any new water Pokemon been discovered, Professor?" Misty asks.
"As a Pokémon Breeder, nothing is more exciting than getting the latest scoop!" Brock says.
"I understand, Brock. There's nothing like seeing it for yourself," Professor Oak says.
The professor soon sees Gary looking at his Pokédex intensely.
"Gary, what's wrong?" Professor Oak asks.
"It's nothing. I gotta go. Scuse me," Gary says, walking off.
"What's with him?" Professor Oak says.
"I'm sure Gary's a bit preoccupied with his match strategy, that's all," Professor Oak says.
"Mew, I think we should go work on your strategy, too!" Brock says.
"You're right. Sorry, but we've got a lot of stuff to do, Professor Oak. We'll see you later," Mew says.
"Bye Mew and good luck," Tracey says.
"Good luck at your match tomorrow," Schuyler says.
"Thank you," Mew says.
Soon, everyone takes their leave.
Professor Oak sighs, "Friends and Rivals for so long and now they battle each other at the victory tournament just like in the Kanto league."
"This will be a match, to remember," Daisy says.
Later that night, at Team Rocket's stand.
"Wow! Talk about a haul! We're da grand masters of moolah!" Meowth says, excited.
Then Jessie comes over with a sign, "Give the public just what they want, that's what I always say! Because goodness knows they'll always pay!"
"Tanks to all dem trainer who didn't make it to da finals and bought our pins instead," Meowth says.
"We love the losers!" Jessie says.
James is seen cranking a giant wheel on a machine.
"James, dear, what's up?" Jessie asks.
"We've got to make three thousand more badges tonight, so we can sell them tomorrow, remember?" James answers.
"Yes, yes, of course! The sweet ka-ching of cold hard cash!" Jessie says.
"Made with pinash!" Meowth happily adds.
"Wobbuffet," (Wonderful.) Wobbuffet agrees.
The next morning, the victory tournament is already taking place.
The announcer says, "The day of the Johto League Silver Conference victory tournament has finally arrived! It's been an arduous journey for the sixteen gifted trainers who've earned the privilege of battling today! And I guarantee you'll witness a competition you'll never forget! The air here in the Silver Stadium is charged with excitement. Ladies and gentlemen, keep in mind from the beginning of this tournament, the battlefield will be randomly chosen and constantly changing. From grass, to rock, to water and to ice! In addition, all matches will be full six on six battles, making every trainer's strategy all the more important!
As the announcer talks, Team Rocket barks out to potential customers.
Back inside the stadium, a Sneasel nails a Machamp and knocks it out on the ice field.
The referee announces, "Machamp is unable to battle, Sneasel wins!"
The announcer says, "Ladies and gentlemen, that does it! Harrison has claimed victory in the first match of the first round!"
In the locker room, Mew is looking down at his good luck charm when Harrison comes in.
Harrison says to Mew, "Hey, Mew
"Harrison. Congratulations, you got to the second round," Mew says.
"Thanks a lot. I know you're up next. I hear you're facing one of your old rivals," Harrison says.
"Gary, yeah," Mew says.
Then Harrison says, "Once you finish up with him, Mew, don't forget, I'm waiting."
"Alright! Then I'll see you in the second round," Mew says.
Outside, Misty, Brock, Pikachu, Eevee, Togepi, Sparkle and even Psyduck and Politoed are waiting on the sidelines. Even Tomo and the others are cheering for Mew.
The announcer says, "The second match in the first round will be a battle between two trainers of the same age and from the same hometown! Mew from Pallet Town, and Gary Oak, also from Pallet Town!
Then the announcer says, "Gary is the grandson of well known Pokemon expert, Professor Oak."
As the announcer talks, the camera points to the professor, but he gets camera shy before Adriana and Daisy butt in with a peace sign.
Then the announcer says, "And Mew has earned himself quite a reputation as well by achieving grand champion in the Indigo Plateau and by securing a win in the Orange Island League! Folks, this would not be an understatement to say this will be one of the finest matches you'll see anywhere! Fasten your seatbelts, this battle is about to begin! Let's see what battlefield they'll be fighting on!
The dial spins around and lands on the rock field.
Then the announcer says, "And it's a rock field!"
The battlefield chosen soon appears.
"Whoa," Tomo says.
"Oh, wow!" Jen says.
Then the announcer says, "It's time to decide who takes the first move!"
The dial spins and lands on red, meaning Gary gets to go first.
Then the announcer says, "And the first move goes to Gary Oak! What Pokemon will he use first?"
And with that, Gary chooses his first Pokemon, "Nidoqueen, I choose you!"
And Nidoqueen comes out.
"Powerful choice!" Brock says.
"I figured Gary would start out in a big way," Misty says.
"That's just fine with me!" Mew says, then she calls out, "Jynx, Go!"
And Jynx comes out.
The announcer says, "Gary has chosen to start out with his Nidoqueen, and Mew with Jynx!"
The referee says, "Let the match begin!"
Gary calls out, "Nidoqueen, Rock Smash, now!"
Nidoqueen promptly slams her fist into the ground and causes the field to crack and rocks to shower on Jynx.
The announcer says, "Nidoqueen gets things rolling with a powerful attack! Those rocks falling like rain are throwing Jynx for a loop!"
"Gary knows how to use that field!" Brock says.
Mew calls out, "Jynx, use Light Screen!"
Jynx does just that.
"We'll have to go with a straight forward attack. Now, Jynx use, Ice Punch!"
Jynx charges for the attack.
The announcer says, "Look at that incredible power! The Ice Punch looks really strong.
Then Gary calls out, "Grab him by the horns!"
Nidoqueen does so, stopping Jynx's attack.
"Oh no!" Mew says.
"They stopped Jynx's attack!" Brock says, shocked.
"Hyper Beam, now," Gary calls out.
"Quick, use your Lovely Kiss Attack!" Mew calls out.
And with that, Jynx gives Nidoqueen a kiss before Nidoqueen can attack, and causes it to get dizzy and make it fall asleep.
"Oh no!" Gary says, shocked.
"Now, use Ice Punch once more!" Mew calls out.
Jynx uses an Ice Punch and knocks Nidoqueen out.
The referee announces, "Nidoqueen is unable to battle! Jynx wins!"
"Unbelievable! Jynx knocked out Nidoqueen before it could launch another attack!"The announcer says.
"That was quick thinking on Mew's part," Mew says.
Gary calls out, Nidoqueen, "Nidoqueen, return." then returns it to the Pokeball.
"You did great, get a good rest," Gary says, "Not bad, Mew."
Then the announcer says, "And now we wait to see who Gary will choose next to face his opponent."
Gary then calls out, "Go, Magmar!"
"A Magmar huh," Mew says.
She then returns Jynx, "Return Jynx," and returns Jynx to the Pokeball.
She then calls out, "Go Heracross!"
The announcer says, "Gary has chosen Magmar, so Mew has substituted for her Heracross!
Gary calls out, "Flamethrower, now!"
Magmar fires the attack.
Mew then calls out, "Dodge it, Heracross! Use Fury Attack!"
Heracross takes flight and does so.
"That Fury Attack scores a direct hit!" The announcer says as Heracross tosses Magmar up.
Then Gary calls out, "Magmar, Fire Blast!"
Magmar fires the attack.
The announcer says, "Magmar uses one of a fire Pokémon's most powerful attacks!"
As the announcer talks, Magmar dives downward until it's inside the Fire Blast itself before colliding with Heracross and pinning it to a rock.
"Magmar's Fire Blast explodes across the field! Extremely effective!" The announcer says.
"What a powerful attack!" Jen says.
"I've never seen a Pokemon do a Fire Blast attack while being that close to the explosion!" Brock says.
Then Gary calls out, "Magmar, Flamethrower."
Magmar fires the attack at point blank range.
"Heracross!" Mew calls out.
"Again at close range, a Flamethrower attack!" The announcer says as Magmar leaps back and lets the fire do the job, "This could be the end for Heracross!"
Then Mew calls out, "Okay, Heracross, blow the flames away, now!"
Heracross does so.
The announcer says, Incredible! Heracross has faced the flames and used its wings to blow them away!"
"Not bad, Mew," Gary says.
Mew then calls out, "Heracross, Mega Horn, now!"
Heracross' horn starts glowing before it charges.
Gary calls out, "Magmar, Flamethrower!"
Magmar fires the attack and stops Heracross' momentum, but Heracross powers through the fire and nails Magmar hard.
The announcer says, "Magmar is hit by a powerful Horn Attack!"
"Magmar!" Gary calls out.
Magmar soon falls on its back, defeated.
The referee announces, "Magmar is unable to battle! Heracross wins!"
"Great work, Heracross!" Mew says.
Then Mew says, "With a disadvantage against Magmar, Heracross still managed to knock its opponent out using guts alone! And now Gary is down two Pokemon!"
"And it's no small wonder Heracross is so powerful after sucking sap out of my trees for so long," Professor Oak says.
"Not bad Mew, but now it's time to get serious," Gary says. He kisses his Pokeball and throws it, "Blastoise, I choose you!"
"Blastoise!" Mew says.
"Didn't expect to see him again," Tomo says.
"Yeah. The same Squirtle that Gary originally received from Professor Oak? Yeah, that's the one," Brock says.
Then Professor Oak says, "It looks like Gary's anxious to finish this up here and now. Blastoise is the most powerful Pokemon Gary has."
Then Mew calls out, "Okay, Heracross, use Fury Attack!"
Heracross takes to the wing and charges in.
Gary calls out, "Blastoise, Hydro Pump!"
And Blastoise fires the attack.
There have been plenty of turnovers in this match already, so the ultimate victor is anyone's guess!
