Episode 173: Can't Beat the Heat
As the Johto League Silver Conference moved into the finals, Mew finds herself paired up against Gary, childhood friend and rival. Both trainers were fired up and determined to see the other face defeat. Before a huge crowd, they faced off in a six on six full battle. Mew's Jynx is able to defeat Nidoqueen. And Heracross is able to defeat Gary's Magmar. Now, without missing a beat, Gary called on his Blastoise. That was the very same Pokemon given to him by his grandfather, Professor Oak, when he first began as a Pokemon trainer. And now, the match continues!
Gary calls out, "Blastoise, use Hydro Pump!
Blastoise fires the attack.
Mew calls out, "Heracross, shield yourself with the rocks!"
Heracross does so, but the rock breaks from the water pressure and gets nailed)
"Heracross!" Mew cries out.
Heracross hits a rock hard, and then falls in defeat.
The referee announces, "Heracross is unable to battle, Blastoise wins!"
Heracross' picture blacks out on the scoreboard.
And the announcer says, "What power! Blastoise blew away Heracross and the rocks it was using to shield itself!"
Amazed, Misty says, "That was the most powerful Hydro Pump I've ever seen, guys."
"I don't think any defense can stand up against that," Brock says.
Tomo and the others including the Pokemon continue cheering on for Mew.
"Looks like Gary's matching Mew with power all his own. I can only hope all of Mew's experience will be enough.
Then the announcer questions, "What will Mew choose as his third Pokemon?"
Mew then calls out, "Go, Muk, I choose you!"
And Muk comes out.
The announcer says, "It's a Muk! But what attack could Muk possibly use against such a powerful Blastoise!"
Gary calls out the attack, "Blastoise, Skull Bash, let's go!"
Blastoise charges forward and nails Muk.
"Hang on, Muk!" Mew calls out.
Muk soon comes to a stop.
Then Mew calls out, "Show that Blastoise! Use Sludge Bomb!"
Muk fires the attack.
Gary calls out, "Rapid Spin, now!"
Blastoise tucks in and spins around and around to reflect the oncoming Sludge Bombs.
"Blastoise used Rapid Spin to send that Sludge Bomb back where it came from!" The announcer says.
"Good! Now send Muk flying!" Gary calls out.
Blastoise moves forward while still using Rapid Spin.
"Muk, hold your ground!" Mew calls out.
Muk manages to make Blastoise stop right then and there once it hits.
"What's this?!" Gary exclaims.
Then Mew calls out, "Now, Muk, surround Blastoise!"
Muk proceeds to smother Blastoise.
"Look at that! Muk has completely enveloped Blastoise!" The announcer says.
"That was a very nice move," Tracey says.
"And a fierce attack. I speak from experience, trust me," Professor Oak says.
"Can Blastoise escape?" The announcer questions.
Gary calls out, "Hydro Pump!"
Blastoise manages to get Muk off of it and send it flying.
Mew calls Muk back, "Quick, Muk, return!"
Muk is promptly recalled.
"Phew. That was really close," Misty says.
"Too close," Molly says.
"Yeah," Brock says, "Gary sure has trained his Blastoise well. It seems to be ready to deal with any kind of attack Mew throws its way!"
"I wonder what she'll do next," Jen says.
Soon, the announcer says, "Just when things were going Mew's way, she was forced to call back his Muk! Mew is already down one Pokemon so her next choice will be a crucial one!"
As the announcer talks, Harrison watches nearby.
Mew then calls out, "Now, Bayleef, I choose you!"
Bayleef comes out.
The announcer says, "It's Bayleef! But will Mew's Bayleef be enough to turn this match around for him?""
"A grass type, I thought so. Not a change against Blastoise," Gary says and calls out the next attack, "Hydro Pump, go!"
Blastoise fires the attack.
Mew then calls out, "Bayleef, use Vine Whip to jump!"
Bayleef does so, avoiding the oncoming water.
"Oh no!" Gary cries out.
"Whoa, it jumped!" Jen says, amazed.
"Whoa!" Professor Oak says, impressed.
"A great picture!" Daisy says and snaps the photo.
"Who knew a Bayleef can jump so high," Spencer says.
"Bayleef makes a huge leap!" The announcer says.
Then Mew calls out, "Razor Leaf em!"
Bayleef launches the attack.
Then Gary calls out, "Rapid Spin!"
Blastoise tucks in and deflects the oncoming attack.
"That Rapid Spin is deflecting every single Razor Leaf!" The announcer says.
Then Mew calls out, "Bayleef, Body Slam!"
Bayleef starts to come down.
"With its full weight behind that Body Slam, it should be able to stop Rapid Spin!" Brock says.
But then Gary calls out, "Blastoise, Bite attack, now!"
Blastoise comes out of its shell and bites Bayleef's head leaf and pins it to the ground
"Spin it around, now!" Gary calls out.
Blastoise spins Bayleef around over its head like a lasso.
"Bayleef is helpless against Blastoise's powerful attack!" the announcer says.
Mew calls out, "Bayleef, hang on!"
Bayleef gets thrown right into the stadium wall, knocked out.
The referee announces, "Bayleef is unable to battle, the winner is Blastoise!"
"Yeah! Way to go!" Gary cheers.
He then says, "So Bayleef's a jumper, huh? Thanks for showing me, Mew. Great show."
"Bayleef, you were great. Take a long rest. Gary is pretty impressive. But so are we," Mew says.
The Announcer, "And with Bayleef eliminated, both trainers are down two Pokemon. Ladies and gentlemen, we'll take a five minute intermission, for the trainers to decide their next move.
When Mew walks over, Pikachu calls out, "Pika Pi! Pikachu Pikachu!" (Mew! Let me get in there, bud!)
Mew says, "You say you want to battle?"
"Well, it makes sense, Gary is using a water Pokemon," Misty says.
But Pikachu says, "I wish I could, buddy, but I'm only allowed to use the Pokémon I registered before the match."
"Pika!" (No fair!) Pikachu pouts.
"Those two battling so fiercely has got my stomach in knots," Professor Oak says.
"They've never changed," Adriana says.
"Oh? How do you mean?" Tracey asks.
Adriana then explains, "Gary was always the confident one, taking the lead with Mew right behind, struggling to keep up with him."
Then Professor Oak says, "He may not admit it, but I think that Gary considers Mew his most important friend of all."
"I think Mew feels the same way," Adriana says.
Soon, the buzzer to end the five minute break goes off
"Time for the second half of our match! As of this moment, Both trainers have four Pokémon. Which Pokémon will they choose?" The announcer says.
Mew brings out her Pokeball and calls out, "Snorlax, I choose you!"
Snorlax soon comes out.
Then Gary calls out, "Go, Arcanine!"
And Arcanine comes out.
"What? Arcanine?" Misty says, shocked.
"I have a feeling that Gary's gonna save Blastoise to use in the final battle," Brock says.
The announcer says, "Mew chooses Snorlax while Gary has chosen Arcanine for this battle."
Gary calls out, "Arcanine, Take Down!"
Arcanine charges in.
Mew calls out, "Snorlax, Body Slam!"
Snorlax leaps in.
Gary calls out, "Dodge it and use Fire Spin!"
Arcanine evades getting squashed by Snorlax's rear before firing the attack right in Snorlax's face before it engulfs it.
The announcer says, "Arcanine's Fire Spin makes a direct hit! Snorlax is completely immobilized!"
"This doesn't look good," Tomo says.
"Come on, Snorlax!" Jen calls out.
"Don't give up!" Mew says and calls out, "Hyper Beam!"
Snorlax fires the attack, bursts through the wall of the cyclone of fire, and nails Arcanine.
"Arcanine!" Gary calls out.
Mew cheers, "Yeah!"
"My stars!" Diana says.
"Amazing," Spencer says.
Arcanine collapses, but struggles to get back up.
The announcer says, "Snorlax launched that attack with all its might! Can Arcanine continue?"
However, Arcanine passes out.
The referee announces, "Arcanine is unable to battle, Snorlax wins!"
"Alright, Snorlax!" Mew cheers.
"Snorlax did it!" Molly happily says.
"Well, Snorlax is amazing, considering all it does is sleep," Adriana says.
"Yes, Adriana, but you can always count on a powerful Pokemon to come through with a powerful attack, time after time," Professor Oak says.
"Now let's see which Pokemon Gary chooses next," Then announcer says.
Then Gary calls out, "Go, Scizor!"
And Scizor comes out.
Gary calls out, "Quick Attack!"
Scizor spreads it and rapidly strikes Snorlax.
Then the announcer says, "Scizor hits Snorlax with a fury of Quick Attacks!"
Scizor lands.
Mew calls out, "Snorlax, use Hyper Beam!"
Snorlax charges the attack.
Gary calls out, "Dodge and use Metal Claw!"
Scizor quickly does so, nailing Snorlax in the face.
The announcer says, "That Metal Claw makes a clean hit! This could be it!"
"Snorlax!" Mew calls out.
"Now you know what real speed looks like, Mew," Gary calls out.
Snorlax skids to a stop, knocked out.
The referee announces, "Snorlax is unable to battle, Scizor wins!"
Gary cheers, "Great, Scizor!"
"Wow. Scizor's really fast!" Misty says.
"Yeah. and they're both tied again," Tomo says.
"And now it's gonna be tough to fight against that kind of speed," Brock says.
Mew calls back her Pokemon, "Thanks a lot, Snorlax. Great work. Okay, watch out, Gary! Go, Muk!"
And Muk comes out.
The announcer says, "Mew calls on Muk for a repeat performance!"
"Scizor, Quick Attack, now!" Gary calls out.
Scizor darts in, but the attack is caught and nullified by Muk's body before Muk pushes it back.
Gary is surprised, "Whoa, using speed attacks on Muk only ends up hurting my Pokemon!"
Mew then calls out, "Now, Muk, use Sludge Bomb!"
Muk fires the attack.
Gary calls out, "Dodge and use Metal Claw!"
Scizor does so, but with the same result as Quick Attack.
"Still not gonna work!" Mew says.
And then Gary says, "Fine! Then send Muk flying!"
Scizor does so.
The announcer says, "Unbelievable! Scizor is actually throwing Muk!"
Then Gary calls out, "Now, use Swift!"
Scizor fires the attack, nailing Muk.
The announcer says, "Muk gets pummeled by that Swift attack!"
"Hang on, Muk!" Mew calls out.
However, Muk falls in defeat.
The referee announces, "Muk is unable to battle, Scizor wins!"
Muk's picture blacks out on the scoreboard.
The announcer says, "Scizor has put an end to Muk's battling for the day! And now Mew Ketchum has two Pokemon remaining! Gary Oak still has three Pokemon in his arsenal!"
Mew then brings out her Pokeball and calls out, "Go Jynx!"
Gary then calls out, "Now, use Steel Wing!"
Scizor's wings start glowing before it darts in.
Mew calls out, "Jynx, Blizzard!
Jynx fires the attack.
Gary calls out, "Dodge it!"
Scizor goes upward.
"No way!" Mew says.
However, Jynx uses her Psychic to send her up in the air, catching it and Gary off guard.
"What?!" Gary says, shocked.
Then Mew calls out, "Now, give it your Focus Blast!"
And with that Jynx hits Scizor with Focus Punch with full force.
"Wow. Jynx is able to use Psychic to fly and give it a strong Focus Blast at close range," The announcer says.
Gary cries out, "Ah, no!"
Scizor soon falls, KO'd.
The referee announces, "Scizor is unable to battle, Charizard wins!"
Scizor's picture blacks out on the scoreboard.
The announcer says, Jynx found the right opportunity to cut through Scizor's defense!
"Oh no. Looks like I missed another great shot," Daisy says.
"There's more where that came from," Adriana says.
"Wow. that's very impressive using that trick," Gary says, "But that's it! Golem, let's go!"
And Golem comes out.
The announcer says, "Gary's sixth Pokemon is a Golem!"
"Golem, huh," Mew says.
"This could be a problem," Misty says.
"Yeah. Golem's a rock Pokemon and isn't too affected by Ice Types.
The Pokemon start cheering once more.
Gary then calls out, "Golem, use Magnitude!"
Golem starts to glow a bit, jumps, and causes the ground to shake when it comes down.
The announcer says, "Golem's Magnitude sends out shockwaves! The power of a Magnitude is never the same, but this one looks pretty powerful!"
"Jynx, use Psychic!" Mew calls out.
Jynx begins lifting Golem, but it's heavy, and is having a hard time.
"That Golem must weigh a ton," Tracey says.
"Just about," Professor Oak says, "Golem is one of the heaviest Pokemon and second only to Snorlax."
The weight proves to be too much and Golem is dropped.
Jynx Psychic failed!" The announcer says.
Gary calls out, "Now, use Rollout attack!"
Golem tucks in and rolls forward.
"Jynx, use Zen Heabutt!" Mew calls out.
Jynx then charges in for the attack.
In fact, both Pokemon hit each other so hard that they're both sent flying.
Gary cries out, "Golem!
"Jynx!" Mew calls out.
And soon, both Pokemon are on the ground, and both of them are knocked out.
The referee announces, "Both Pokemon are unable to battle, it's a draw!"
"Wow. that's crazy," Jen says.
"Both of them were able to knock each other out," Brock says.
"And now they're both down with one last Pokemon," Misty says.
"You've gotten this far, Mew Mew," Gary says. He then brings out his last Pokemon, "That'll be far enough! Blastoise, go!"
And Blastoise comes out as its picture lights up on the scoreboard.
"And now, for the final battle, Gary brings back his Blastoise!" The announcer says.
Mew then calls out, "Alright Charizard, I choose you!"
And with that, Charizard comes out of the Pokeball.
"And Mew's final Pokemon is Charizard," The announcer says, "Blastoise appears to have an overwhelming advantage based on Pokemon type. But this match isn't over just yet, folks, believe me!"
"Advantages aren't everything. We made it this far, right? And we're going all the way," Mew says.
The announcer says, "Ladies and gentlemen, the last battle is about to begin! And Gary has chosen Blastoise. Mew's final Pokemon is Charizard. Based on type, Blastoise has the advantage, but only time will tell."
Mew then calls out, "Charizard, Flamethrower!"
Charizard fires the attack.
Then Gary calls out, "Blastoise, Rapid Spin, now!"
Blastoise tucks in, spins, and repels the attack.
"Again, Rapid Spin proves a strong defense, this time against Charizard's Flamethrower!" The announcer says.
Soon, it's revealed that Jimmy, Marina, and Vincent are watching at a different part of the stadium.
Jimmy calls out, "Come on, you can do it, Mew!"
"You can beat him!" Marina calls out.
"Go get him, Mew!" Vincent called out.
Back on the battlefield.
Gary calls out, "Blastoise, Hydro Pump!"
Blastoise stops spinning and fires. The attack hits Charizard right in the face.
"Hydro Pump scores a direct hit, causing problems for Charizard!" The announcer says.
"Fly, Charizard!" Mew calls out.
Charizard takes to the air.
Then Mew calls out, "Get behind Blastoise, now!"
Charizard darts in.
Gary calls out, "Skull Bash, now!"
Blastoise's attack nails Charizard.
The announcer says, "That Skull Bash is right on target! With Charizard's Flamethrower attack pretty much worthless at this point, is there any way Mew can turn this around?"
Mew calls out, "Charizard, fly up and come in for a fresh attack!"
Charizard gains altitude.
Then Gary calls out, "Blastoise, use Hydro Pump, then you can stop Charizard in its tracks!"
Blastoise fires the attack, but Charizard dodges with aerial acrobatics.
The announcer says, "Blastoise unleashes a powerful barrage of Hydro Pump blasts, while Charizard can't find any room for a return attack!"
Mew says to herself, "Come on. There's gotta be something to do. But what?"
Gary calls out, "What'll it be, Mew? You've always been pretty good at thinking outside the box when you had to, but none of that thinking's gonna help you now!"
"Charizard, hang in there!" Misty calls out.
And Brock says, "Fire attacks don't have much power against water Pokemon, but sometimes they can work. Especially if Charizard could somehow take a clear shot at Blastoise from close up."
Charizard fires some Flamethrowers as Blastoise continues to fire Hydro Pump blasts.
"That's no good. I've gotta do something about that Hydro Pump, first," Mew says.
Soon, Mew spots a rock getting hit by Charizard's flames and heated up, giving him an idea.
Mew says, "That's it! If we can't hit Blastoise, we can hit everything else!" Then calls out, "Charizard, use Flamethrower to burn the battlefield!"
Charizard does so.
The announcer says, "Charizard is striking the field with Flamethrower! What sort of strategy could Mew have up her sleeve?"
This leaves Mew confused, "Okay. What's Mew's idea this time?"
"What's Mew up to?" Casey asks.
"I don't know," Molly says.
"I can't figure out what Mew is doing," Misty says.
Then Mew calls out, "Way to go, Charizard! Keep up that Flamethrower!"
The flames keep on coming, causing the boulders on the field to heat up and melt.
"It's starting to get awfully warm in here," Adriana says.
Soon, Professor Oak realizes, "What?! Look there! The field is melting!"
"No way!" Gary cries out in shock.
"Awesome!" Mew says.
The announcer even notices, "What kind of crazy... I mean, what a novel and unique strategy! Charizard's Flamethrower attacks are melting the field, leaving Blastoise with nowhere to run!"
"Looks like Mew has done it again," Tomo says.
Then Brock says, "Blastoise may be strong against fire directly, but not against something like this!"
"What will Gary do? Blastoise has been completely immobilized!" The announcer questions.
Then Gary calls out, "Blastoise, use Hydro Pump to cool the field down!"
Blastoise does so, creating a thick layer of steam
The announcer says, "Would you look at that! Trying to cool down that red hot battlefield with a Hydro Pump attack was all it took to cover it with a thick layer of steam! And now it's impossible for anyone to see what's happened to either Blastoise or Charizard!"
The steam clears and the two are seen in a Greco-Roman lockup.
The announcer says, "There they are! Having been thrown together, Charizard and Blastoise are locked in close range hand to hand combat!"
"Charizard's too close. Blastoise can't aim with its hydro cannons!" Gary says.
Mew then calls out, "Use Dragon Rage!"
Charizard charges the attack.
But Gary calls out, "Dodge it, quick!"
Blastoise ducks his head just in time.
And then Mew calls out, "Charizard, lift Blastoise up into the air!"
Charizard does so.
Gary calls out, "Bite attack, Blastoise! Go!"
Blastoise bites Charizard in the shoulder.
"Charizard!" Misty calls out.
Then Mew calls out, "Charizard, don't give in! Seismic Toss with everything you've got!"
Charizard goes into the attack.
The announcer says, "And Charizard is going to try Seismic Toss once again!"
Charizard loops around and around faster and faster.
Blastoise!" Gary cries out.
Charizard starts to rapidly descend.
The announcer says, "Folks, looks like this time it's going to work!"
Blastoise and Charizard come down with a thud, and everyone waits in silence for the results. The dust soon settles and reveals Charizard on its feet and Blastoise struggling to get to its feet. Both Pokemon stare at each other until Blastoise winces and finally falls, defeated at last.
The referee announces, "Blastoise is unable to battle, Charizard is the winner!"
Blastoise's picture blacks out on the scoreboard before Mew's picture fills it.
The announcer calls out, "Blastoise has been defeated! The winner is Mew from Pallet Town!"
The stadium erupts in cheers.
The announcer says, "It was a long and fierce battle, and in the end, Mew emerged victorious! It was something to see!"
"Alright," Mew cheers.
Gary simply walks away before Pikachu and Eevee run in.
Both of them call out in their language, "Mew!"
Mew giggles as both her Pokemon climb up her shoulders.
"Pikachu! Eevee!" Mew happily says.
Everyone else approaches.
Misty cheers, "That was awesome!"
"You hung in there, Mew," Brock says.
"You did great!" Casey cheers.
"Thanks guys. Now that I finished with the first round, I need to continue on to the next," Mew says.
Meanwhile, with Team Rocket…
Jessie's voice cries out, "Stop, you thief!"
It's revealed that Delibird came in and tried to make off with their money.
"Don't think you can just waddle your way in here and steal a sack of our hard-earned metal money!" Jessie shouts.
"Hey, guys! Look at dis!" Meowth says.
Jessie lets go of Delibird and asks, "What, Meowth?
"If we keep dis up, we could end up owing nobody nuttin in no time!" Meowth says.
Jessie says, "Imagine!"
"Us three, debt free!" James says.
Jessie then says, "Well, then, we'll just have to work harder! We'll expand and open a string of souvenir shops. I could design the cutest little uniforms you've ever seen. We'll advertise and write a jingle!"
"I can sing," Jessie says.
"I'm pretty good at backup," Meowth says.
Jessie happily says, "Great! It's out of the poor house and straight into the horn of plenty!"
"Yeah!" Team Rocket cheers.
"Wobbuffet," (Let's do it!) Wobbuffet says.
Later that night, Gary is seen looking out at the lake.
Mew's voice calls out, "Gary?"
"Huh?" Gary replies and turns to see Mew next to him, "Hey, Mew. Thanks for coming to see me.
"No problem," Mew says, and asks, "So, what's up, Gary?"
Gary then says, "That battle of ours today was awesome. I don't even feel bad that I lost. You see, Mew, when we tied long ago, I felt like a failure. But today, you totally beat me fair and square, get it?"
"I guess," Mew says, "You know, I feel like I got a whole lot stronger by battling with you today."
"Me, too. I'll cheer for you in your second match," Gary says.
"Thanks," Mew says, and extends her hand.
Then Gary shakes Mew's hand, "Good luck."
The two friends and rivals shake their hands.
The next morning, Mew's second battle is about to begin.
The announcer says, "Ladies and gentlemen, the battlefield for the second match in the second round of the championship tournament is grass! Mew from Pallet Town has the honor to go first, followed by Harrison from Littleroot Town in the Hoenn region!"
Mew then calls out, "Now, go, Pikachu!"
Pikachu leaps into battle
Harrison calls out, "Hey, Mew! Even though you're a friend of mine, I won't take it easy on you!" Then calls out, "Kecleon, you're up!"
And Kecleon comes out.
"A Kecleon," Mew says.
After an intense battle, Mew managed to defeat Gary, and now moves on to the second round of the championship tournament. But she now faces another formidable opponent! How will this battle turn out?
