Chapter 98
Serena steps into the stark, unforgiving environment of the jail, her heart heavy with the weight of what's transpired. She secures permission to visit her "so-called" friends, a bitter irony tainting the air. As she gazes upon their faces behind bars, disbelief mingles with despair in their eyes. They're young, too young for the death sentences looming over them like dark clouds.
Each of them, in a moment of desperation and misguided loyalty, played a part in Delia's demise. Now, the bitter taste of regret hangs heavy on their tongues, for their actions have not only cost them their freedom but also shattered the dreams they once pursued with fervor. The evidence, damning and irrefutable, surfaced in a conversation with Golly, laying bare the extent of their misdeeds.
The revelation about Ash's hidden family secrets adds another layer of betrayal to their already tangled web of deceit. Learning that Ash has siblings, kept hidden from them all this time, feels like a final blow to their fractured trust. And to realize that Golly's vendetta is rooted in familial ties, with Ash's mother sharing a connection to Golly's plight, casts a shadow of hopelessness over their situation.
In this moment of bleak realization, they cling to the fragile hope of a miracle, a sliver of light in their otherwise dark fate. But as the reality of their actions settles in, the walls of the jail seem to close in around them, echoing with the silent cries of lost innocence and shattered dreams.
The atmosphere crackles with tension as Serena enters, accompanied by a stern-faced policewoman. Gasps escape the lips of her "friends" as they turn their attention towards her, a mixture of relief and apprehension clouding their expressions.
"Serena!" Their voices carry a hint of surprise, quickly replaced by a sense of unease as they take in her expression.
"I can't believe you guys! Years ago, you were adamant that Ash was the one who killed his own mother, and I trusted your words!" Serena's words are sharp, laced with disappointment and betrayal as she fixes them with a piercing glare.
"We were just trying to avoid getting caught. We had our own lives and families to think about," Misty responds, her tone tinged with defensiveness.
Brock chimes in, his voice tinged with regret, "It's true. We were scared of what would happen if the truth came out. We didn't want to end up in jail."
Serena's anger simmers beneath the surface as she listens to their justifications. "So you feel no remorse for what you've done?" Her words carry a heavy weight, demanding accountability.
Trip, usually reserved, speaks up with a hint of accusation in his voice. "We admit to our part in Delia's death, but we didn't take it as far as you did. You provoked the Elites, and your actions towards Ash went too far. You didn't even give him a chance to explain before jumping to conclusions and ordering his interrogation."
Serena's fists clench as she cuts through the tension with a commanding tone. "Shut up. You were the mastermind behind all of this, dragging all of his friends into your schemes."
"But isn't that what friends are for? To support each other?" Iris retorts, her voice holding a hint of defiance.
"You were meant to be the Champion," Serena's gaze pierces through Iris, filled with disappointment. "But now, I'm here to deliver some news. Despite not committing a crime, I've decided to step down as the Kalos Queen."
"What?" Dawn's gasp echoes through the cell, her eyes wide with disbelief.
"Your resignation as the Kalos Queen?" May's voice reflects the shock rippling through the group.
"Yes, because my position as the Kalos Queen, much like your role as the Unova Champion, contributed to your reputation and standing. With that gone, your accomplishments hold little value," Serena's words hang heavy in the air, the weight of her decision reverberating through the room.
Mallow's tentative voice breaks through the heavy silence. "But..."
"Nothing matters anymore," Serena interrupts sharply, her tone final. "I can't assist you any longer, nor can I reverse the sentences handed down to you. It's time to face the consequences. Reach out to your families, say your goodbyes, or whatever you need to do."
Brock, his voice tinged with desperation, tries to find a glimmer of hope. "But what about Cynthia and Leon? They were on your side, weren't they?"
"They've suffered even more," Serena responds with a bitter edge, her disappointment palpable. "Being Champions, they lost their positions too. But it's irrelevant now."
"In what way is it irrelevant?" May presses, her confusion mirroring the group's collective bewilderment.
"There's no point," Serena's words cut through the air like a blade. "No point in helping when you've destroyed everything yourselves."
The coldness in Serena's tone sends a chill through the room as she continues, her frustration seeping into her words. "I went above and beyond to boost all of your careers, only to be repaid with betrayal. How could you hide your crimes, carry on as if nothing happened, and even paint yourselves as victims? Did you honestly think I wouldn't be devastated once the truth came to light?"
Clemont's voice wavers with guilt as he tries to explain. "Serena, she... Delia wasn't supposed to die. We didn't want our lives to be ruined, so..."
"Did it ever occur to you," Serena's voice is laced with bitterness, "that getting caught would make everything far worse? Or were you secretly hoping that Ash would take the fall for your crime?"
"We never intended for it to end like this," Brock interjects, his words heavy with regret. "And Ash wasn't entirely blameless by then."
"Yet here we are," Serena turns away, her expression a mixture of disappointment and anger. "This is the last time I'll be seeing you. I hope you enjoy the consequences of your actions."
With a nod to the officer, Serena exits the cell, leaving behind the cries of despair from those she once called friends. Their pleas fall on deaf ears as Serena walks away, her resolve unyielding in the face of their betrayal.
The somber atmosphere envelops the gathering as Ash and his family stand before his mother's coffin, now restored to a peaceful semblance as if she were merely asleep. The attendees, including Sevestar leaders, Pallet Town residents, Professor Oak, and a few close friends, pay their respects in silence.
"My mother lived much of her life in shadows, but her guidance illuminated my path for all these years," Ash's voice carries a mixture of sorrow and gratitude. "Thank you, Mother, for everything."
The other Ketchum siblings, reunited only in the wake of their mother's passing, share their heartfelt sentiments. "Since we were separated and became just three, we've yearned for more time together," they express, each reflecting on their unique bonds and memories.
Amidst the mourning, a surprising twist emerges. The International Police, influenced by the intervention of Arceus, decide to overlook Delia's past crimes. This unexpected leniency brings a measure of relief to Ash's family, coupled with Adam's revelation of his paternity, a revelation that adds yet another layer to the intricate tapestry of events.
Meanwhile, from her vantage point in the hotel room, Serena observes the funeral proceedings, her heart heavy with remorse. Seeing Ash's grief over his mother's death deepens her sense of guilt, especially considering her previous doubts about him. She can't help but ponder the weight of sorrow that Ash may have carried within him all these years, a burden that she failed to fully comprehend.
As the funeral progresses, Serena's thoughts drift to Alice, a reminder of another tragedy intertwined with Delia's past. The realization hits her that the bullies who tormented Alice met their end at Delia's hands, rendering Serena's previous suspicions in Solanet Town moot. Amidst the sorrow and revelations, one silver lining emerges—the traitors responsible for so much anguish are brought to justice, their execution serving as a stark reminder of the consequences of their actions and a promise that such betrayal will not be repeated.
"Are you sure about this, brother?" Hop's concern is palpable as he watches Leon pack his belongings, preparing to depart from the region. Leon's response is tinged with resignation, "I've made a grave mistake, and this is the consequence I must face."
"But we all believed that Ash was guilty," Hop interjects, seeking to ease his brother's burden. "We were deceived by those manipulative individuals."
"That doesn't excuse my abuse of power as the Galar Champion," Leon admits, his voice heavy with regret. "As Ash and the other Champions pointed out, I became arrogant. Perhaps I was afraid that Ash would surpass me one day."
"But he did defeat you," Gloria interjects, her words carrying a mix of admiration and sympathy. "Even if he had to hide his identity at the time. Now that you've lost your Champion title, what's next for you?"
"I may return to working at the Battle Tower," Leon muses, considering his options. "Or take on the role of managing the Galar Star Tournament."
Hop's disappointment is evident as he speaks, "I had hoped you'd watch my battles..."
"I'm sorry, Hop," Leon's apology is heartfelt, acknowledging the disappointment he's caused his brother and others.
At the same time, in another part of the region, Cynthia is having a heartfelt conversation with her fellow elites about her decision to step down as Champion. "I truly believe I no longer deserve the title of Champion after everything that's transpired," Cynthia confesses, her tone heavy with regret.
"Cynthia, please," Aaron interjects, his concern evident in his voice.
"I've been close friends with Dawn, Iris, and Cilan for so long," Cynthia continues, reflecting on her past actions. "Perhaps that blinded me to their deception. I wrongly accused Ash, a good-hearted young man, of a heinous crime."
"What will you do now?" Bertha inquires, her voice gentle yet curious. "You've passed the Champion title to Paul, but what about your future?"
"I think I'll return to my grandmother's home," Cynthia reveals, a hint of nostalgia in her voice. "And perhaps I'll delve deeper into exploring ancient ruins now that I have the freedom to do so."
"You'll always be our Champion in Sinnoh, in our hearts," Bertha assures her, expressing the sentiments of the group.
"Thank you," Cynthia replies sincerely, touched by their support. With a sense of closure and resolution, Cynthia too prepares to depart from the Sevestar Region, mirroring Leon's decision to step away from his Champion role.
Ash lets out a weary sigh as he and Alice sink into the couch, fatigue evident on their faces after being bombarded by a relentless horde of reporters. The barrage of questions had been unrelenting, spanning a multitude of topics and leaving them mentally drained.
"Seriously, how many reporters are out there?" Ash mutters under his breath, frustration seeping into his tone.
The reporters had fired off questions ranging from Ash's life over the past five years to the revelations about his mother's clandestine activities. They delved into the complexities of being the prince and princess of two regions, probed into the aftermath of the traitors' demise, and even pried into personal matters like their upcoming wedding and future plans.
"The League inspection, the father-son relationship, forgiveness...they just wouldn't stop," Alice adds, sharing in Ash's exasperation.
The temptation to unleash Glaceon's icy breath or Pikachu's electric shock on the relentless reporters flickers briefly in their minds, but they dismiss the idea. Now, finally alone in the room, they relish the peace and quiet, grateful for a moment of respite from the incessant questioning and scrutiny.
"Ash, who are you going to face during the four inspections?" Alice's curiosity breaks the silence, steering the conversation towards their upcoming battles.
"I'll be up against Maylene, Raihan, Shauntal, and then my Dad," Ash replies, his expression thoughtful. "The first three should be manageable, but my Dad... that's going to be a challenge."
"And for me, it's Roxanne, Mom, Officer Nanu, and a surprising addition, Serena," Alice reveals, a hint of intrigue in her voice. "The matchups were decided before the League Inspection started."
"Thankfully, the traitors were set to face our 18 leaders, so Eve, Mark, and Drandon didn't need to make any changes due to the executions," Ash notes, a sense of relief in his tone. "But what about Serena? Are you planning to go all out against her?"
"Considering she's not really known for battling, I might hold back a bit," Alice responds, her gaze thoughtful. "Though it's still a bit awkward."
"Has she tried to talk to you today?" Ash's question carries a tinge of sadness.
"No, it seems like she's avoiding me," Alice admits with a sigh. "I can't blame her, given everything that's happened."
"About the 18 Infinity Gems," Alice starts, steering the conversation to a weightier topic. "What do you plan to do with them?"
Ash's expression turns serious as he considers the question. "The Infinity Gems hold immense power, but they're far too dangerous to be left in the wrong hands. I've entrusted Meloetta, Keldeo, Ho-oh, Pecharunt, Zygarde, Diancie, Genesect, Marshadow, Jirachi, Victini, Manaphy, Shaymin, Zeraora, Mew, Kyurem, Rayquaza, Zarude, and Magearna with the task of safely sealing away the gems, ensuring they can't be found or misused."
Alice leans in and kisses him on the cheek, her concern evident. "Ash, are you certain this is the best course of action?"
A warm smile spreads across Ash's face as he gazes at his fiancée. "Those gems bring more trouble than they're worth. And honestly, I've had my fill of trouble for a lifetime."
"You make a good point," Alice concedes, a sense of relief washing over her. "I'm grateful that you've accepted me despite our challenging pasts. It's a testament to our enduring love."
"You're my partner, Alice," Ash says, gently pulling her closer as she rests her head on his shoulder. "We've weathered storms together, and I wouldn't have it any other way."
As they wait for the others to return to the castle, a sense of peace settles over them, knowing that they face the future hand in hand, ready to tackle whatever challenges may come their way.
And here is a new chapter, and there is one more chapter before the epilogue, that chapter will explain the remaining stuff of the region. I hope you like this chapter.
