Sometime while the Jedi and dancers were training, the four rogue running members of the Furious Five continued on their way to fight Mariverde, who was about halfway to the valley by now. Unlike Comedia, who could use her magic horn to apparate to a certain amount of miles to arrive at the prison faster than just flying the whole way, Mariverde relied solely on running, only flying when she absolutely had to in order to strengthen her wings.
Bo-Katan, Mariposa, Obi-Wan, and Ahsoka made their way to a rope bridge, where they found a green hooded figure.
"Mariverde," growled Bo-Katan.
The green figure then charged across the bridge. Quickly, Ahsoka and Obi-Wan each took out a sword and cut the bridge, only for Mariverde to start flying, and Mariposa took that as her cue to literally swoop in. But Mariverde caught Mariposa in what looked like a giant butterfly net made of thousands of green and black moths
"Long time, no see, little sister." Mariverde chuckled. "Where are the Gemini Dragon Warriors?"
"How do you know you're not looking at one of them?" Mariposa said.
Mariverde laughed and said, "You think I'm stupid? I know not even one of any of you is a Gemini Dragon warrior! I heard how two of them fell from the sky on a ball of fire, one is hard, the other soft. That they are more warrior together than anything the world has ever seen."
"Anakin and Carmine?" said Ahsoka.
"The twins?" Obi-Wan said at the same time.
"So those are their names. Anakin and Carmine." chuckled Mariverde. "And twins, no less. I should have guessed. Finally! Two worthy opponents. Our battle will be legendary!"
Except, that was when Mariposa conjured a powerful spell and broke out of the moth net.
"I once chose not to fight you because we were sisters, and I still don't wish to do so," said Mariposa. "You must surrender, Marianna!"
"Marianna is no more. Mariverde replaces her." said the elder butterfly.
Bo-Katan and the others took that as their cue to literally jump in and help Mariposa by jumping on some rocks and branches and attempting to fight Mariverde all at once, but Mariverde proved to be more powerful than all of them combined could've imagined. Mariverde trapped them all with her moths and attempted to throw them to their demise, but luckily Mariposa caught them with her own powers.
Mariposa did her best to hold off her sister, but it wasn't enough.
"Mace taught you well, I see." said Mariverde, the smirk clear in her voice. "But he didn't teach you everything."
Mariverde then cast yet another powerful blow. One that had Obi-Wan paralyzed, and the others gasping.
"You have done well, boys." Mace said. "And you have perhaps given me something to think about."
"I'd say we gave you a lot to think about." Carmine said.
"And 'well' would be an understatement." Anakin smiled. "We did awesome!"
"A true mark of a warrior is humility, but yes, you both did... awesome."
However, the three men were met by the sound of someone calling for Master Windu. When they turned around, they were met by a shocking sight of Mariposa carrying Bo-Katan, Ahsoka, and Obi-Wan in a large tarp she'd used to move them safely, and when she set them down, all three of her friends were paralyzed.
"Oh no!" the twins exclaimed.
Inconveniently, Padme had arrived to see her friends in a terrible state.
"Mariposa! What happened to everyone?!" Padme asked.
"My sister happened." Mariposa said, unable to stop the tears in her eyes.
"Are they dead?" Carmine asked.
"No, they're still breathing." Anakin said, finding that so quickly, to his relief. "Their eyes are open too, so they aren't sleeping."
"We were no match for her nerve attack," panted Mariposa.
"She has gotten stronger." Mace said, sounding scared for what seemed like the first time.
Mace touched a few nerves around Obi-Wan's body, helping unfreeze the human before letting Mariposa use a magical blue butterfly to heal him, and they did the same for the others.
Obi-Wan gasped as he was able to move again. "He's gotten faster!"
"I thought we could stop him," said Bo-Katan, unable to take in the defeat.
"He could've killed you." Mace scolded.
"Why didn't she then?" Mariposa said.
"So you could come back and strike fear into our hearts, but it won't work."
"Uh... you sure about that?" Anakin said, seeing Carmine in Qui-Gon's arms.
"You and Carmine can defeat him, Anakin." Mace said.
"But they're four of the Furious Five," said Carmine. "And Mariposa has the same powers as Mariverde, and even she couldn't defeat her!"
"How are only the two of us supposed to beat her?" Anakin said.
"You two will have the one thing no one else does." Mace said.
The time had come at last. It was time to present the Yin-Yang Dragon scrolls to the Gemini Dragon Warriors.
The entire Jedi Council and the Furious Five came to witness this historic event.
Anakin and Carmine were both nervous beyond belief; this was the very moment they'd trained for.
"You really think we're both ready?" Anakin asked.
Carmine was surprised to hear his brother ask that question; Anakin was the one who'd mastered martial arts as a child, and yet now he was starting to doubt himself.
"I know you are." Mace said. He held a shoulder of each of the twins and looked at them with a gentler look than either had seen on him since they'd arrived. "Anakin, Carmine."
Mace walked over to a portrait of the late Master Yoda and picked up his old staff. He took the staff over to the reflective pool that sat underneath the dragons. He performed a series of swift movements that blew some petals around. One petal to the scrolls, and each of them fell down. As the eldest twin, Anakin received the first one, a scroll of black and silver, and Carmine received the scroll of white and gold.
"Behold, the Yin-Yang Dragon Scrolls." Mace said as he presented each scroll to the twins. "They are yours."
"What happens when we read them?" Carmine asked curiously.
"No one knows, but legend says you will be able to hear a butterfly's wing beat."
"Wow! That is cool." Anakin said. "What else could we do?"
"The only way to find out is if you open the scrolls and become the Gemini Dragon Warriors."
Anakin looked at his twin and said, "Shall we open them together, Brother?"
Carmine placed a hand at the top of his container and said, "Let's do it."
So, the twins opened the containers together and took out their scrolls.
"Here goes," said Anakin.
Together, the twins unrolled the scrolls in anticipation, everyone feeling the suspense about what would happen next. Except, instead of some epic magical spell happening, the twins both had looks of confusion on their faces.
"It's... it's all scratched up. There's nothing on this." Anakin said, to everyone's confusion.
"What?!" Mace and pretty much everyone else gasped.
"Carmine, what's yours say?" Anakin asked his brother.
"Mine doesn't make any sense. It's just covered in a bunch of dots and curved lines." Carmine said. "It doesn't look like any morse code we learned in school."
"What are you talking about?" said Mace.
"Just look for yourself," said Anakin, but Mace turned away.
"No! I am forbidden to look upon-"
Mace took Anakin's scroll and looked at it for himself. Then he looked at Carmine's too. Just like they said, no clear message was on it.
"I...I don't understand." Mace said.
"Okay... so... Master Yoda was just a crazy old man, after all?" said Anakin.
"No, Yoda was wiser than us all. He would never have tricked us."
"I didn't know him too well, but he gave me some wisdom not too long ago." Carmine said. "Maybe we're missing something."
"Hmm, yeah. Maybe there's a trick to these things. Oh!" Anakin took the scrolls back and gave the black one to Carmine. "Maybe we each opened the wrong one. Maybe I was supposed to open the white and Carmine was supposed to open the black one."
"That could be it." Carmine shrugged. "Let's do it."
So, the twins opened the scrolls again, this time with the opposite color. They got the same results.
"Maybe the message is in invisible ink?" Carmine suggested.
So, the twins held the scrolls in the sunlight to warm up the scrolls. Nothing appeared. They even tried having Jedi with keener eyesight look at it. Nothing but the same lines and dots.
"I should've known!" Carmine exclaimed, angrily throwing the scroll to the floor. "Yoda picked us by accident. I knew we should've just listened to Dad and not come here in the first place!"
And Carmine just ran out in an emotional fit, amid Anakin and Qui-Gon both begging him to come back.
"Anakin, you're still a skilled fighter." Padme said.
"But it's supposed to be two warriors. I may be skilled, but I can't face Mariverde myself. I've never actually fought in a real battle before." Anakin started to cry himself. He looked down and saw Fluffy hop over to him, seeming to twitch his nose curiously.
Carmine never abandoned Fluffy, but this time, he was too blinded by his anger to even notice he didn't have his pet. Anakin picked the rabbit up and started to pet him; no wonder Carmine felt more secure with him. But, as cute as the bunny was, it wasn't enough to stop Anakin's crying.
"Carmine was right. I should've listened to him."
Padme hugged Anakin and did her best to comfort him.
Of course, all the Jedi were worried.
"Who will face Mariverde?" said Bo-Katan.
"She'll destroy everything and everyone!" Mariposa said.
"No! Evacuate the valley." Mace ordered. "All of you. You must protect the villagers and your children from Mariverde's rage."
"And what about you?" said Bo-Katan.
"I will fight her."
"What?!" Anakin and the Five all said.
"I can hold her off long enough for everyone to escape."
"But Mace," said Qui-Gon. "She'll kill you."
"Then I will finally have paid for all my mistakes." Mace said, looking guiltily at Qui-Gon. "Including how I treated you long ago. The rest of you, it is time for you to continue on this journey... without me. I am very proud to have been your master."
Mace bowed to his students, and they returned the gesture.
As night fell, the Jedi began evacuating everyone from the village. Everyone was advised to only grab essentials so they could get to safety before Mariverde arrived.
"What about Daddy?" Myra cried as her mother held her hand.
"Daddy is staying behind, Sweetie." Brenda told her daughter. "He's doing it to save us all."
Bo-Katan was placed in charge of giving the Five their assignments.
"Ahsoka, gather the southern farmers," said Bo-Katan. "Mariposa, light the way."
Mariposa conjured more blue butterflies, ones that glowed in the dark of the night to help everyone migrate to a safe new home.
Anakin and Padme walked together into town and met Qui-Gon at his family's restaurant.
"So, this is where you grew up?" said Padme.
"Yup. Simple yet charming, isn't it?" Anakin sighed. "Sad we have to leave it behind."
Artoo whimpered.
"I just can't believe Carmine was right."
Anakin felt terrible. All these years, he'd spent them learning to fight battles, protecting his brother, and being a showoff. In reality, deep down, he realized all these years, he was so reckless and he thought he was being a good brother by protecting Carmine instead of teaching him to fight his own battles, and he thought Carmine was just being a killjoy by being careful all the time. It never occurred to him that Carmine was trying to protect Anakin from something he never imagined he would need protecting from: himself. Now, Carmine had finally gained confidence in himself, only to have that shattered by two scrolls that had nothing but lines and dots on them that had no meaning to them.
"I should've just listened to him and just stuck to waiting tables." Anakin said. "Maybe being a Jedi Master was nothing more than a childish dream. Dad was right about it all this time."
"Anakin, you weren't wrong about being destined for more." Padme said. "If you hadn't come... I wouldn't have met my true love."
"I won't say that I told you so, Anakin." Qui-Gon said. "What you did to arrive at the Temple was very reckless. You put both yourself and your brother in a world neither of you knew of. And now that you know why I left, do you understand why I didn't want you to go up there?"
Anakin sighed. "Yeah, yeah. You were right, Dad. I get it! Go ahead and ground me or something. It's what you do."
"But you were also right in some respects, Anakin. And Yoda was also right that you and Carmine. You're more than waiters in a restaurant. Your destony just may take longer to find. For now, we need to keep our family safe."
Anakin walked into the building to help his family pack, and he found Carmine being hugged by their mom and Caroline. Carmine was crying.
"Ani!" Shmi exclaimed, rushing to hug her other son.
"Hi, Mom."
"Oh, Ani. I was so worried about you." Shmi said.
"I'm okay, Mom. We both are. At least... I hope we will be."
Anakin looked guiltily at his twin, who couldn't be bothered to say anything. Carmine just put his rabbit in his bag and started to leave with the others.
The Jinn family was silent for a while.
"I'm sorry things didn't work out, boys." Shmi said. "I'm sure you gave it your best."
"But it wasn't good enough." Carmine said.
"But you aren't as scared as you were before." Anakin said. "You mastered some good moves back there."
Carmine sighed.
"But what's the point? We're not the warriors we thought we'd be. I was foolish enough to think I'd ever be more than a ballerina."
"Don't you forget, Carmine, even the lady ballerinas are a lot stronger than we look." Caroline said.
"Both of you are still strong at different things," said Padme. "But together, you brought out something new. I've never seen any Jedi have as much fun in class before you brought in dance teachers to show another side to stage work. And Anakin, you had the courage to stand up against a rule no Jedi ever did have the courage to fight against since your father left the order."
"Assuming we don't get ambushed wherever we find a new home," said Anakin, looking in Padme's eyes. "at least we have the chance to find our destiny together, you and I."
The entire village kept moving, and eventually they started to get through the forest to find a place to make camp.
The Jinn family and the twins' girlfriends sat around a fire to cook up something to eat. Anakin looked at a s'more his mother had made.
"Hmm, have you ever wondered why we use crackers of all things on s'mores. Why not cookies?" Anakin said. "They're good, but still."
"You have a real sweet tooth don't you?" Padme giggled.
"Anakin acts tough, but he's a greedy guts for sugary goodness." Carmine said.
"If they had any more sugar on them, they'd be too sweet even for you, Ani." Shmi said. "The crackers and dark chocolate balance out the flavors."
According to Shmi, even a treat as simple as a s'more required balance of flavors. Graham crackers for that slightly bitter, semi-sweet taste, a little dark chocolate to add some strong kick, and a sugary roasted marshmallow to sweeten and tie it all together.
Carmine was drinking some tea to warm up, but it needed a little sugar. But when he mixed it in... he spat it right back out!
"Bleh! That wasn't sugar."
"See, Carmine? Even salt can be made to look like sugar." Qui-Gon said. He picked up the two jars. "We really need to start labeling these things. For future reference, maybe take a closer look before you throw it in."
"Look closer...?" Carmine suddenly thought of something.
"Look closer?" Anakin started to think of something too.
And soon, both the twins had the same conclusion.
"Look closer!" they said together.
The twins opened their scrolls again and looked at them.
"What are you doing, Ani?" Padme asked.
"Looking closer at these scrolls." Anakin said. "There must be something we missed."
"What exactly are we looking for?" Carmine asked, looking at the black scroll.
"I'm not sure. But if we look closer, we might find something."
Anakin and Carmine looked at each of the scrolls very carefully and began to notice some things. The lines on the black scroll seemed to form a pattern of some sort. There seemed to be vertical bars that connected two sets of five more horizontal lines, and there were more sets like it below, and all of the horizontal lines had smaller straight lines on them. Carmine looked at the dots and noticed they were in some kind of a pattern. Some dots looked solid, others were hollow, and some of them had curved lines that connected them. And, Carmine noticed several lines that looked like half a heart with two dots that looked oddly familiar.
"Why do I feel like I've seen a symbol like that before?" Carmine said.
"I feel like I've seen lines like these before too." Anakin said. "But I'm not sure where."
And then, Anakin had an idea. The scrolls must have been connected somehow. But, how were they supposed to put them together. Then, Carmine noticed the writing on his scroll was sparkling in the fire's light. But the black scroll's lighting remained solid.
"What else do we know about these scrolls?" Carmine said.
"They used to hang over the Jade Temple Reflecting Pool." Anakin said. And then he had an idea. "Which reflected things. And what happens when you hold words up to a mirror?"
"Caroline, Padme? Do either of you have a mirror on you?"
"I never go anywhere without it," said Padme, taking out a pocket mirror.
Padme took Carmine's scroll and held her mirror across some of the symbols, and she found something.
"Carmine, you said you were a musician, right?" Padme said.
"Yeah. I've taken piano since I was three. I do play guitar too, and some other instruments, but those two are my favorites." Carmine said.
"What does this look like to you?"
Carmine looked at two of the symbols and saw they weren't just strange lines at all.
"Those are treble and bass cleffs!" Carmine said.
"What? Why would musical cleffs be on the Yin-Yang Dragon scrolls?" Anakin said.
"I don't know. But I think I know what we need to do next. Time to shine some light on this."
Caroline angled a lantern's light so it would hit Carmine's paper, and Anakin held his up still while Carmine angled his scroll until the dots aligned with Anakin's.
"Padme, can you write this down?"
"I'm on it."
Padme got out a piece of paper and quickly copied every note on the scrolls until it was all written down. Except, now that it was copied... the twins were still unsure what to do.
"It's...it's a music score." Carmine said. "Now I'm confused."
"Were Jedi secretly songwriters or something?" Anakin said, looking at his dad.
"It's been a while since I was a Jedi, but I don't recall songwriting being covered in my training back then." said Qui-Gon. "I'm not sure what it means either."
Obi-Wan decided to take a look too. This didn't make any sense.
"Perhaps there is some meaning behind this music." Obi-Wan said. "Is it not commonly taught that music is meant to express various things?"
"That's true." Mariposa said. "Even Jedi at some point found comfort in music."
"But, why a musical score for the Gemini Dragon Warriors?" said Ahsoka. "And why put it on two scrolls?"
Now the twins were really stumped. What could this mean?
"Maybe it's a song that'll turn us into the Gemini Dragon Warriors if we play it!" Carmine said.
"That would be logical." said Obi-Wan. "The only problem is none of us have any musical instruments."
"Someone could just sing the notes," said Padme. "You do have a beautiful voice, Ani.
Anakin blushed at that, and looked at the score.
"Hmm...If only I knew how to read music." Anakin said. "Ugh! Now I wish I hadn't quit singing lessons before I got to the reading music part."
Carmine got his guitar from the wagon and tried playing the score. It sounded pretty, but nothing seemed to happen. Anakin humming as Carmine played the score again, and then vocalized the melody. Again, nothing happened.
"Nothing's happening." Carmine said, looking at the music score. Not even the pretty little hearts Caroline drew in the top left and bottom right corners could cheer him up.
"I guess it really is hopeless," sighed Anakin. "Maybe the whole legend of the Gemini Dragon Warriors really is just that."
"It can't be." Padme said. "There has to be something we're still missing."
"Don't you get it, Padme?" Bo-Katan said. "It's over! No one can stop Mariverde! There are no legendary warriors! These two fell into our lives by accident."
"But Master Yoda said-" Anakin said.
"Yoda said a lot of things. He was wrong about you. Both of you." Bo-Katan said. "You're just an overconfident karate kid and a dancing scaredy-cat. And that's all you're ever gonna be!"
Anakin was about to say something, but this time, Carmine interrupted and stood up.
"That's enough!" Carmine said angrily. "I've had enough of your insensitivity! You don't know me or my brother! I don't know who hurt you, but that's no excuse to act like a jerk! I've faced bullies like you before so many times. All of them called me names, they said I was a scaredy-cat, and they picked on me all the time. Anakin fought all my battles while I sat there like a coward and let my anxiety be a roadblock! Well, not anymore. I don't care what you think of me as a warrior, but if you think I'm gonna let you insult me and my brother like this, you're wrong!"
Everyone froze the whole time Carmine spoke. Anakin couldn't believe it; for once, Carmine stood up for himself and for Anakin instead of Anakin standing up for him. Even his parents were impressed; neither of them had ever seen Carmine go up against anyone. He never disobeyed his parents (not on purpose, anyway), he never talked back to anyone, and he never ever engaged in a fight, physical or verbal with anyone whether they were bigger or smaller than him or even his own size.
Bo-Katan sighed.
"I'll admit, you have gained some spunk since you first arrived." She said. "But mere words won't defeat Mariverde. And neither will some musical score. You should just give up on kung fu now and just stick to what you're good at."
It was dark and everyone was getting tired.
"We'll have to settle this in the morning," said Qui-Gon with a yawn.
"I agree." said Padme tiredly.
Everyone got to their resting places and went to sleep for the night. All except the twins.
Anakin just lay awake while Padme slept beside him, Carmine doing the same with Caroline. What did it all mean? Music bars on one scroll and reflective backwards notes on another? The musical score put together? What did it all mean?
