The Encore of Batch 89
Chapter 5: To Arms!
The trio made their way to a bustling space station, navigating through crowds and various stalls until they reached a weapons supply retail outlet. The automatic door whooshed open as they entered, and the metallic hum of various energy weapons filled the air.
Lylla approached the counter, where a grizzled clerk with a multitude of cybernetic implants looked up from his catalog. "How can I help you?" he grunted, eyeing the trio.
"We need some weapons," Lylla replied, gesturing to Floor and Teefs.
The clerk was an "ask no questions" type of guy, which was appropriate for a weapons dealer. The trio looked off, but if they wanted weapons, he wouldn't deny them the right to do business with him.
He glanced at Floor, sizing her up. "For the insect lady here, I'd recommend a pair of tasers. Lightweight, efficient, and good for close encounters."
Floor's antennae twitched with curiosity, and she nodded enthusiastically. The clerk then turned his attention to Teefs, stating matter-of-factly, "Big target, huh? I'd suggest a plasma energy shield. Activate it with a voice command, and you'll have some extra protection."
Teefs nodded in agreement, eager to try out his new gadget. The clerk then turned to Lylla, eyeing her laser pistol which she kept in a makeshift holster in her belt. "Got something already, I see. One of those simple self-charging lazer cartridge models, eh? But why not let me give it a few modifications?
Lylla was interested, and she nodded and said, "If you can make it better, I'm interested."
The clerk inspected her laser pistol and proposed, "I'm thinking. . .extended barrel for increased power. Plus a built-in silencer to reduce knock-back and increase accuracy. It'll cost you a bit, but it's worth it."
"I'll take it!" Lylla said as she placed her gun on the counter.
The grizzled clerk skillfully attached the twin tasers to Floor's two front metal legs, ensuring they were securely fastened. He explained, "Now, to activate these, just give a little kick forward. Flick them again to turn them off."
Floor nodded, a mischievous glint in her red eyes. She tested the tasers with a swift movement of her legs, and electric sparks danced between the prongs. Satisfied, she grinned, her antennae twitching in excitement.
Turning his attention to Teefs, the clerk worked on integrating the voice-activated energy shield projector into his collar. As he attached the device, he explained, "Alright, big fella. To activate your energy shield for defense, just say 'energy shield up.' And if you're feeling a bit more aggressive and want to use it for ramming, say 'plasma shield up.' It'll create a solid barrier for you."
Teefs, still getting used to the idea of voice commands, nodded and repeated, "Energy shield up... and plasma shield up. . .I got it."
The clerk gave a satisfied nod. "That's the spirit. Remember, practice makes perfect. Just be cautious not to accidentally activate it in tight quarters. You might end up knocking things over."
Teefs, excited about his newfound defensive capabilities, grinned and said, "Thank you kindly, sir. This is just what I needed."
The clerk then handed Lylla the modified gun. "I gave it a nice polishing too. This weapon is a work of art, ain't it?'
Lylla held the lazer blaster in her cybernetic hands. She couldn't help but admire it. The weapon now looked like a cross between a pistol and a rifle. The shiny chrome elicited a sense of awe in her. It was the perfect blend of form and function. The length of the weapon was now half of her height, and let the gun was perfectly weighted and balanced so that she could wield it effortlessly.
With a polite nod, Lylla said, "Thank you. It's even better than I could have ever imagined. But before we go, do you know where we can learn to defend ourselves better? We need more than just weapons; we need to know how to use them effectively in combat. Maybe learn some unarmed combat as well? We'd rather not kill if we don't have to."
The clerk, well-versed in the needs of various customers, considered their request for a moment before responding, "Ah, you're looking for some hands-on training. There's a reputable dojo on the planet below. They specialize in hand-to-hand combat and self-defense. You'll find skilled instructors there who can teach you the ropes."
Lylla appreciated the guidance, and a sense of determination glimmered in her eyes. "Thank you," she said, "that's exactly what we need. Can you give us directions or the location of the dojo?"
The clerk handed them a data pad with the coordinates of the training facility. "Right there. They're known for their excellent instructors. The owner of the place is a Kylosian. He's pretty ignorant on most things, as expected from his kind, but in combat, he's a genius. He'll make fighters out if you three for sure."
The trio descended to the planet, following the coordinates to the dojo where they hoped to hone their combat skills.
The trio stood at the entrance of the facility, a haven for warriors seeking mastery in various combat arts. The air was thick with the scent of polished wood and the distant echoes of sparring bouts. Lylla, Teefs, and Floor entered with determination and quickly spotted the Dojo Master. He was an imposing, extremely muscular Kylosian. He wore nothing but a pair of black shorts. He was completely hairless, and his bare chest bore intricate crimson colored tattoos.
Lylla, taking the lead, stepped forward and bowed respectfully. "Excuse me, Dojo Master. We're looking for some training to enhance our combat skills."
The Dojo Master turned his gaze towards the trio, his eyes narrowing slightly in curiosity. He took in Lylla's sleek cybernetic arms, Teefs' intricate mechanical limbs, and Floor's array of insect-like legs and tasers. A moment of silence lingered before he finally spoke.
"I see before me a trio of unique individuals seeking the path of martial enlightenment. The universe has a way of bringing diverse souls together."
Lylla nodded and said, "Master, I assure you that we can all be very good and attentive students. We will follow all instructions and train until we drop!"
The Kylosian peered questioningly at Lylla and asked, "Drop what? What do you expect to be holding during your training?"
Lylla stood confused by the question, then she said, "I mean, we won't quit no matter how difficult things get. Even if it's an uphill climb-."
"You will not be climbing any hills here," the Kylosian said with a shake of his head, "Although such exercises will undoubtedly be beneficial to you, you had best do those on your own time."
". . .Erm. . .Okay," Lylla said lamely.
The Master gestured toward the training area. "Come, my students. Let us explore the depths of your potential. In this dojo, we embrace the differences that make each warrior special. Your journey begins here. I have trained all of the teachers here. Feel free to step up to any of them and they shall swiftly start training you."
As they entered the training areas, the trio felt a mixture of anticipation and determination. The dojo, adorned with symbols of various cultures and species, resonated with the energy of countless warriors who had walked its floors.
In one section of the training area of the dojo, Lylla stepped to the center of the mat, her eyes focused and determined. One of the teachers employed in the dojo approached her. "Let's begin, student. I can see the potential in those cybernetic arms of yours."
Teefs rolled into another section of the training area, the mechanical arms extended from his collar and raised in anticipation. His trainer, well-versed in adapting training to various forms, approached him with a thoughtful expression. "Student, let's work on utilizing those mechanical arms and your unique mobility."
Another trainer turned his attention to Floor as she stepped onto another vacant mat, recognizing the uniqueness of her abilities. Floor's six insect-like robotic legs were tapping the floor in anticipation. The trainer, observing her unique form, smiled and gestured for her to come closer. "Student, let's explore the capabilities of those impressive legs of yours."
Du du du du-du du du
Du du du du du-du du du
Either the trainer didn't notice when Lylla slipped on her headphones and pushed play on her IPod, or he saw no issue with it. The lyrics of Centuries by Fall Out Boy moved through her and got her pumped up.
Some legends are told
Some turn to dust or to gold
But you will remember me
Remember me for centuries
The trainer started with a series of warm-up exercises, fluid movements designed to blend agility with strength. Lylla gracefully shifted from one stance to another, her cybernetic arms mirroring the precision of her natural movements. The room filled with the rhythmic sound of her steps, creating a dance-like harmony.
And just one mistake
Is all it will take
We'll go down in history
Remember me for centuries
The initial exercises focused on Teefs' ability to move swiftly and efficiently on his wheels. The trainer guided him through intricate patterns, emphasizing the importance of speed and unpredictability. Teefs rolled in smooth arcs, his wheels gliding effortlessly across the dojo floor.
He-e-e-ey ya, oh he-e-e-ey
He-e-e-ey ya
Remember me for centuries
The initial phase of Floor's training focused on mobility and agility. The trainer guided her through a series of exercises, utilizing the flexibility of her six metal legs. Floor moved with a graceful, almost dance-like quality, her insectile legs adjusting with remarkable precision to navigate the training area.
Mummified my teenage dreams
No, it's nothing wrong with me
The kids are all wrong, the story's all off
Heavy metal broke my heart
As Lylla's warm-up concluded, the trainer directed her attention to the punching bag hanging in the corner. He advised her to strike with intent, without sacrificing agility.
Come on, come on, and let me in
Bruises on your thighs like my fingerprints
Lylla approached the punching bag, her cybernetic fists clenching with determination. With a swift series of punches, she demonstrated the integration of her natural agility with the enhanced strength of her cybernetics. The bag swung back and forth under the force of her blows.
And this is for to match
The darkness that you felt
I never meant for you to fix yourself
Teefs' trainer directed his attention to a series of floating round targets, strategically placed around the training area. The exercise would improve accuracy while encouraging him to maintain his mobility.
Du du du du-du du du
Du du du du du-du du du
Teefs' mechanical arms whirred to life, each movement calculated and precise. He rolled towards the targets, the metallic appendages extending and retracting with remarkable speed. The targets met their demise under the controlled force of Teefs' robotic strikes.

The trainer working with Floor activated some moving spherical targets. The goal was to improve her precision with the twin tasers attached to her front prosthetic legs. Floor activated her tasers, and arcs of electricity danced between the prongs. She carefully practiced striking targets with the tasers, each movement coordinated with the rhythmic tapping of her robotic legs. The trainer encouraged her to experiment with different angles and ranges, ensuring she could effectively employ the electric shocks in various combat scenarios.

Next, the trainer introduced defensive maneuvers, recognizing that Teefs' mobility could be a significant advantage in avoiding attacks. Teefs practiced blocks, raising and crossing his robotic arms to deflect the strikes from his trainer.
And I can't stop 'til the whole world knows my name
'Cause I was only born inside my dreams
Next, the training shifted to defensive maneuvers. Floor's six legs became a defensive barrier, expertly blocking and deflecting simulated strikes from imaginary opponents. The trainer marveled at her ability to use both her tasers and legs for a seamless defense, creating a formidable shield against potential threats.
Until you die for me, as long as there's a light
My shadow's over you
'Cause I-I am the opposite of amnesia
As the training progressed, the trainer introduced acrobatic elements, exploiting Lylla's natural otter agility. She leaped and somersaulted, her cybernetic arms aiding in mid-air maneuvers. The dojo became a symphony of movement, with Lylla showcasing the versatility of her enhanced combat skills.
And you're a cherry blossom
You're about to bloom
You look so pretty, but you're gone so soon
Lylla's training session concluded with a demonstration of a choreographed sequence that seamlessly blended her natural otter acrobatics with the precise strikes of her cybernetic fists. The trainer nodded in approval.
Du du du du-du du du
Du du du du du-du du du
The final phase of Teefs' training involved combining his mobility with striking techniques. The trainer orchestrated choreographed sequences where Teefs seamlessly rolled, spun, and struck targets with precision. As the training session concluded, Teefs rolled to a stop, his mechanical arms lowering in a show of respect to the trainer.

As Floor's training progressed, the trainer incorporated acrobatics into Floor's regimen. She performed flips and spins, utilizing her robotic legs to propel herself through the air while maintaining control over the tasers. The dojo resonated with the rhythmic sounds of her movements and the occasional crackle of the electric tasers.

The final phase of Floor's training focused on combining her mobility, defensive capabilities, and taser strikes into cohesive sequences. The trainer orchestrated choreographed routines, showcasing Floor's ability to seamlessly transition between evasive maneuvers, defensive postures, and electrifying the training session concluded, Floor stood tall, her six legs tapping the floor in a rhythmic pattern. The trainer commended her on the adaptability and creativity she displayed during the training, recognizing the unique combat style that had emerged. Floor left the training mat, buzzing with energy, ready to unleash her electrifying skills in any future encounters.

For three weeks, the trio practiced tirelessly, sweat glistening on their fur, metal, and synthetic components alike. All day they would train in the dojo, then return to the Raccoon with sore muscles that led them all to collapse into their beds, just to wake up early the next morning for another day of training.
We've been here forever
And here's the frozen proof
I could scream forever
We are the poisoned youth
On the 21st day, the trio walked, or rolled in Teefs' case, out of the Raccoon and confidently returned to the dojo for the 21st time. Their minds were wired and sharpened, and their reflexes were heightened. They felt stronger, fiercer, and ready to face anything in between them and Rocket.
Du du du du-du du du
Du du du du du-du du du
Teefs had a hardcore look in his eyes as he extended his mechanical arms and pounded their clenched claws together. Floor gnashed the teeth of her mash and let out a slightly devious giggle.
Du du du du-du du du
"Du du du du du-du du du," Lylla sang along with the music in her headphones.

The Dojo Master constantly observed the trio's progress every day. As time went on, the Master would provide the trio with more personalized guidance, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and communication in their training. As they progressed, they started practicing coordinated maneuvers, leveraging each other's strengths to overcome opponents.

As a final proof of their skill, the trio carried out a combination attack on a huge training dummy that was built like a musclebound giant. Lylla, with her sleek cybernetic arms, engaged the dummy with swift punches and jabs to its chest, creating a flurry of strikes. Meanwhile, Floor used her six insect-like legs to circle around the dummy, delivering precise slashes and zaps and distracting movements to the legs. Teefs, with his robotic arms and wheels, added to the chaos by zipping in and out, striking opportune clothesline strikes. The result was a mesmerizing dance of coordinated attacks that could overwhelm any adversary.

The Dojo Master approached them with a nod of approval. "You've all shown remarkable dedication and adaptability. Remember, it's not just about physical strength, but strategy and coordination."
Teefs nodded his head and said, "Oh yeah, we've got all that down pretty well. The teachers here are amazing."
"Teachers nice too!" Floor added, "No insult us or beat us when we make mistakes!"
Lylla knew what Floor was alluding to, but she pushed the painful memories of Counter Earth to the back of her head and said to the Kylosian, "Thank you so much for everything, Master. Thanks to you, we all have so much self-defense skills under our belts."
The Kylosian Master glanced at Teefs and Floor and said, "Your friends are not wearing belts."
Lylla smiled awkwardly, while Teefs lowered his head and muttered quietly, "I think I lost track of the number of times he's done that."
With their training completed, the trio left the dojo with spirits high. While two weeks didn't make them masters themselves, it was enough to make them formidable enough to hold their own in a fight. Coupled with their strong cybernetics and weapons, Batch 89 was now far from helpless. The trainers' teachings had imparted valuable skills that would serve them well in the challenges that lay ahead.
Notes:
And here it is! Lylla's gun from the comics!
What about her blue cloak? Don't worry, it'll show up eventually.
Also, I think a member of Drax's race training them is rather fitting.
