SUMMARY: The guardians go to an amusement park and Bunny has to face his fears. At least he has his favorite fairy to hold his hand.
*Surfaces from under a mountain of book and studying materials* HALP!
Sorry everyone. Unfortunately my finals are yet to be over (damn you teachers) and the lack of sleep made writing this a lot harder and slower but I shall not be discouraged, because in the end I was able to finish it. No matter how long it took or how many times I had to change main plot elements, I did it. *pumps fist in the air* Still, sorry for any typos or mistakes you may find.
Enjoy this little story about a roller coaster of both the literal and emotional kind.
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
"Aw, carrot-breath is scared" The boy of frost mocked.
"Jack, call me that one more time and I'll drown you in the fountain at the entrance." The pooka hissed.
"Hey, I'm just saying that maybe you should back away from this one."Jack raised his hands in surrender but still sporting his signature smirk.
E. Aster Bunnymund had faced a lot of dangers throughtout his life, both before and after becoming a guardian. From battling against the Nightmare King to working under dangerous situations - like handling very volatile materials he used to make the egg bombs. No creature or thing had truly succeeded to cast fear into his heart.
Except of course heights.
Despite being considered brave in the face of danger, now he felt his stomach drop at the idea of riding on that monstruous contraption humans called roller coaster.
Red and yellow metal rails twisting and turning into almost impossible angles and high drops that sent the carts to speeds that he didn't want to consider.
Everyone sitting behind him better like carrots.
How had he even let himself be convinced of going to an amusement park? Easter was in 2 weeks and he still had to paint eggs. Bunny swore that somebody was gonna pay if kids in Guatemala didn't have easter eggs this year.
But no, North had to practically drag him out of the warren and make him come with the rest of the team to this place. They even had whisked Jamie Bennett away for the ocassion, so another reason why he couldn't say no.
Of course, Jack had somehow talked the Cossack into this and after a not very thrilling portal jump, the five guardians and child were at an obviously overcrowded amusement park.
Even when he complained about how in the world were they gonna pass a six foot tall pooka through security control, Sandy answered by throwing green colored dream sand at his face. It gave him the sneezes for a minute, but when it settled down he was in for a surprise.
Not only were his ears and fur gone, but it had been replaced by human skin, hair and clothes. His whiskers banished to give way to a human face.
There was no longer a mythical pooka in front of them, but a tall man with green eyes and dark hair.
That definitely sent him flipping.
"THE HELL HAVE YOU DONE TO ME MATE?!"
"Bunny, calm down. You can't enter ze park in your true form, that's why you need disguise." North tried to appease him since his screams would drew too much attention.
"But why did it have to be this weird looking?"
"I think you look great." A voice said softly behind him.
He turned around and there was Tooth. Except it was not entirely her. Her wings and feathers were gone and the feathers in her head were replaced by black short hair with colorful strands in yellow and blue. She was wearing a purple sleeveless blouse, jean shorts and comfortable snickers, sunglasses resting atop her head.
Her face hadn't changed at least, and he liked it that way.
She looked like a normal young woman at a theme park and he found her new appearance just as lovely as her original form.
Maybe the effect was now heightened because he hadn't seen her in weeks after that last conversation they had, before he holled up to prepare for Easter. They all had gathered at the North Pole, and once they were done, Bunny was accompaning Tooth to the exit when she popped the question.
"Do you want to go out with me?"
"Wha...I...date?" Yes, he had been that smooth. But in all honesty, a) he had not expected Tooth to ask that, and b)the woman of your dreams just did what you hadn't even mastered the courage to do in all this centuries. How else would you have reacted? Gosh, the other guardians would never leave this one down if they saw him right now.
"Yes Aster, a date. Y'know, with food and talking and stuff." She smirked, rather enjoying how buffled he looked.
Silence.
"So...do you?" Now her uncertainty resurfaced. She had been tired of both dancing around the fact that there was attraction between them for so long and since Aster wasn't gonna do it, she had decided to jump into the water first. It hadn't been easy for her either, and part of her was still skeptical about it.
"Yes!...Imeansuresure...umm...gottago...eastereggs...paint'em. Bye!" He gasped all in one breath and quickly tapped his foot, disappearing through a rabbit hole.
She couldn't help but release the laugh she had been holding back. She knew rabbits to be nervous, but that was a complete new side of the usually calm and collected Bunnymund. She liked it, though.
And while the tooth fairy returned back to her palace with a big smile on her lips, Bunnymund spent an hour at his work desk, banging his head against it repeatedly and torturing himself with how ridiculous he must have looked.
Then came the hectic weeks where he spent days at his desk painting eggs, and the entire word and its inhabitants had evaporated. He never stopped to acknowledge that many of the googies came out inspired in a color palette he had seen in certain fairy's feathers.
But let us go back to the present.
"Ya really think so?" There it was again. Damn it, what was wrong with him? He could already feel his tongue twisting into impossible knots and getting ready to spew nonsense.
"Umm...yeah. I really do."
Jack and Jamie laughed as Bunny's new skin changed to a furious red.
But at the moment, the pooka didn't care.
Aster had to admit that he was enjoying himself. The group moved along the crowded streets, enjoying the different stall games and almost every attraction that they set their eyes on.
The food was really good and even if Tooth gave them a dirty side look when eating sugary treats, they got her to try some of the ice cream and she admitted it was delicious - and then proceeded to take Jack, Jamie, and herself to the closest bathroom so they could brush their teeth.
And although the place was packed, North and Sandy (who also had turned more human-looking for the occasion) were very good at entertaining everyone during the waiting at the long lines.
The relaxed atmosphere even eased his nerves at the idea of being so close to the girl he liked. They had talked normally when going from one attraction to another and he even had won a small crochet bunny keychain which he dutifully presented to her and she had been delighted with.
All was fun and well, until they reached the section of the park that was famous for its thrill rides - more specifically: the famous roller coaster The Scream Machine.
At this Aster tried to put his foot down, but it only encouraged Jack further in trying to get the group to ride it.
"C'mon, Bunny. Don't tell me you're scared." He poked.
'That bloody little...' But before the pooka could end the thought, Tooth stepped forward to calm down the animosity. "Jack, that's enough. If he doesn't want to go on the ride, we shouldn't push him."
"I'LL GO!" He blurted out louder than needed, trying to save face in front of her.
Why the hell had he said that?
Tooth looked at him, tilting her head. "Are you sure you want to go, Aster? You don't have to if you don't like roller coasters."
"It's no problem. I'll go." He swallowed, trying to hide the panic from his friends.
"Ok then. Let's get in line." North quickly pushed them forward into the already quite long line of people that was forming for the next ride, too focused in the engineering design that had been put into the attraction and probably wondering if he could apply it to some of his toys at the workshop.
Bunnymund sighed. How had he gotten himself into this?
They were waiting for their turn and Bunny was weighting all the plausible excuses to skip this whole ordeal - from Pitch Black attacking the warren to a massive egg emergency - but all could easily be invalidated by Jack, who was almost waiting for him to say something.
Jamie and Jack were already picking the seat they wanted to ride in and proclaiming they were sitting together at the front of the carts. Thick as thieves till the end those two.
North laughed, pointing out that they had beaten him for the place he wanted and that he would graciously take the middle cart instead.
"Who do you want to ride with, guys?" Jamie asked.
Sandy tapped his chin in deep thinking.
"Bunny how about we ride together?" North suggested.
'The hell I'm sitting next to you North!' Bunny though, knowing that North would probably make sport of him or even manage to render the seatbelts useless in his constant thrill-seeking pursuit.
"I'll go with Bunny." But before he could argue, Tooth had stepped forward once more. "It would put me at ease if you went with Sandy. He's still too short to ride on his own and you can hold him down if the ride is too extreme."
The argument seemed most reasonable to North and Sandy but to Bunny it was almost heaven-sent. He looked down at the guardian of memories, eyes full of gratitude. 'Ya're a life saver, Toothy.'
"Look who's talking, Tooth." Jack teased. "You're not too far away from the ground yourself."
"I'm sure I can handle myself just fine, Jack." She said with all the confidence in the world.
"We're here!" Jamie squealed and stepped forward, for the group had indeed reached the front of the line and now was the next one.
"I know." He smirked at a very pale Bunnymund. "I'm just wondering who's gonna stop him from flying out."
'Calm down, mate. You can do it.' He repeated for himself as he saw Jack and Jamie take the front cart while North and Sandy took the one in the middle.
"Aster, it's our turn." Tooth quickly grabbed his hand and dragged him to the last cart in the back. "It'll be alright."
'You promise?'
She seemed to read his mind, because she chuckled and winked. "Don't worry. I'll protect you."
'This is the end. This is how the last pooka goes down. Not in battle or saving the children of the world, but on a roller coaster'. He thought while looking nervously at the twists and turns. The workers had pulled down the lap bar and had already double checked it on Bunny's insistence. 'How is this even a thing? WHERE ARE THE BLOODY SEATBELTS?' He checked again that he hadn't missed any other security features. Nope, just a metal bar to save him from plunging down to the ground and into a horrible death. Flipping fantastic.
North looked back at them as the cart began to move. "I've heard they put camera at the end and take picture so don't forget to smile!"
Bunnymund was too worried of keeping his stomach's contents where they belonged to heed the advice. Screw everything; he wasn't even going to open his eyes for as long as he was seated.
Suddenly, he felt a warm tiny hand on top of his, and he looked to his right to see Tooth smiling warmly at him. "If you get scared, grab my hand."
The rides train began to slowly and painfully climb the slope, and so did the pooka's heart rate. He took deep breaths in a futile attempt to calm his nerves and pushed himself as far back in the seat as possible.
They reached the top of the slope and as soon Aster saw how high the drop was, his hand shot out to grab Toothiana's.
"Son of a...!" But the pooka's sentence was lost in the thrilled screams of the other riders as the carts began their speedy descent.
He tried to close his eyes but a strong force stopped it somehow, and he could see his friends ahead, arms raised and screaming their lungs out - well, except Sandy but that didn't mean the little man wasn't having the time of his life.
During a loop, he felt Tooth jumping around from the speed they were going and quickly stabilized her by putting an arm around her shoulder - he didn't mind to say how the thought of Toothiana falling had spurred such a quick reaction. She seemed a bit surprised by this, but mouthed a thank you and one of her hands firmly grabbed his to keep his arm around her shoulders. To be this close to her, set part of Bunny's worries at ease. He felt safe with Tooth around.
Another quick drop made him clung to her and burry his face in the fairy's neck. She chuckled and assured him that he could open his eyes now and he untangled himself from her, except from the arm around her shoulders to which she was still holding onto.
Luckily, the ride went faster than he expected and was grateful when the tunnel to the exit came into view. But, of course, lady luck was not on his side because to reach the exit they had to go through the highest slope of the ride.
"SMILE EVERYONE!" Jamie's voice came from afar as they approached to the part where the camera was.
'I don't even care how I look in that bloody photo. JUST GET ME OUT OF HERE!' Aster wanted to scream back.
His mouth started to open to let a scream as the cart plummeted down the almost vertical drop and Aster's eyes flew open in terror. That's when he felt a small pressure on his face.
Toothiana had leaned over and planted a kiss on his cheek.
His frightened expression gave way to a bemused 'o' of surprise as something bright flashed in front of his eyes.
He didn't remember the rest, but in a blink of an eye the carts were slowing down and reaching the platform where the park workers and other people were waiting for them to exit.
He left the ride as fast as his shaky legs allowed him to, leaning against the walls.
It was over. It was finally over.
The rest of the group was talking excitedly about the ride and Jack and Jamie even suggested that they should get on it one more time.
"See, Bunny?" The guardian of fun patted him on the shoulder. "It wasn't that bad, was it?"
And that's when E. Aster Bunnymund, guardian of hope and last pooka warrior, passed out.
Aster began to wake up, the world around him slowly becoming more clear. He was greeted by the ceiling dyed by a tinge of orange traces from the fleeting sun, and a soft perfect smile.
"Aster can you hear me?"
He grunted, hoping that the dizzy sensation in the pit of his stomach would eventually calm down.
"Give it a couple more minutes and then try to drink something." She handed him a bottle of water.
Little by little, he recovered his bearings. They were at his house, he recognized the dark wooden floors and the soft smell of grass and flowers that entered through the open window, and he was laying in bed with Tooth sitting at the edge.
The rest of the group was nowhere to be seen, which Bunny was thankful for since there would be no jives at his expense.
"Where are the others?"
"I convinced them to stay at the park. Jack and Jamie are probably getting sick from so much junk food, Sandy is watching that they don't enter a food coma and North is most likely riding the roller coaster again." She recounted and smiled at the mental image.
"Sorry ya had to stay with me, sheila."
"Don't worry about it" She shrugged, and then chuckled. "Besides, your sleeping face is cute."
Aster felt himself blushing and cursed this human skin and not having his fur to hide such reaction. He slowly accommodated into a sitting position, feeling her hand in front of him in case that he got dizzy and fell forward. The world no longer swirled around him and his senses recovered their acuteness.
He gave the fairy a half smile "M' alright now, sheila."
Not wanting to be hassle, she sat further from him and a small sigh escaped her. She wouldn't admit it out loud but she had actually enjoyed the proximity.
A small silence passed before she said in a light tone: "You had us worried back there for a moment."
She hadn't been there when he fainted. North and she were at the ride's photo booth, where dozens of screens showed people either posing for the camera or raising their arms as the cart dropped.
They found theirs. Jack and Jamie were openly smiling at the camera and striking what tried to be an epic pose, North looked like a child that had rediscovered Christmas all over again and his excitement was almost palpable, and Sandy - no longer held down by North - looked like he was about to fly out of his seat and had a surprised expression on his face. Then their eyes spotted the pair sitting in the last cart, with Tooth kissing Bunnymund on the cheek and him looking completely gobsmacked.
North gave her a side look and chuckled but didn't say anything. Even the woman behind the counter that was assisting them smiled at it while printing the picture and preparing an envelope.
"You make such a cute couple." She said as North was busy fishing his wallet out of the bag pack where everyone had put their stuff.
Tooth sighed and gave her a half smile, shaking her head to convey that the woman had jumped to the wrong conclusions. "Not there yet."
The staff left the envelope on the counter and leaned in to whisper. "I know it's not my business, but you totally should go for it." She winked and leaned back, smiling as if nothing had happened. "That'll be $11.99, please."
That was when the sound of several gasps and a very distinct "North, need a little help over here!" came to her. Surrounded by a small crowd, were Jack and Sandy trying to hold Bunnymund up and stop him from hitting the ground - which was rather hard since the dead weight was more than what they could handle. Jamie was making his way to get Tooth and the Russian through the people.
The tooth fairy was the first to get there and already and give directions to the rest of the guys. North quickly carried the pooka outside since the crowded hall was too stuffy and placed him on a free bench where the air was cooler, while Jack relayed all information to Tooth. He hadn't hit his head while falling, just went pale and started to sweat on his way out of the ride. Sandy was fanning Bunny with one of the park's map they had received at the entrance, and boy of frost was cooling a water bottle in his hands to then place it on the pooka-now-turned-man's forehead.
After making sure he was breathing more normally, Tooth started counting. Only if he didn't wake up in two minutes, she would start freaking out.
It took him 1 minute and 32 seconds to come to his senses, and she sighed of relief when his eyes opened slightly.
"Geez, kangaroo. We can't take you anywhere." Jack teased while leaning against the backrest of the bench.
"Belt up, show pony." His voice sounded hoarse.
Such a rapid and so Bunnymund-like response set everyone at peace. But Tooth was conscious that they couldn't stay there for long, they were drawing too much attention.
"Bunny, do you think you can stand? We need to take you home."
He nodded and let North help him stand.
Meanwhile, she asked Jack and Sandy to stay with Jamie. She knew how exited the two boys were to be here, and she would hate to deprive them of the fun. Especially after Jamie had such a great performance on his recent school tests and Jack had wanted to do something special for the eldest Bennett kid.
She and North would take the pooka to the warren and the Cossack would send one of his yetis - excellent physician, he assured the fairy - to check up on him.
After finding a secluded place and two portal travels, Bunny was resting in his bed and the doctor had given a good prognosis. The combination of exhaustion, meager eating and even poorer sleeping had taken a toll on the pooka, getting on a roller coaster had only been the last straw that his body could take. Tooth felt slightly guilty for not insisting not do it, although she didn't think that Bunny would have changed his mind at all.
Of course, Bunnymund had not been awake for most of this doctor's visit. As soon as the doctor said he was alright, he had fallen asleep. Almost as if he had waited for the creature's confirmation to finally allow his body to rest properly. After the doctor had assured the other two guardians that it was okay to let him sleep, she had stopped trying to keep him awake.
The fairy thanked both North and the yeti, and decided on staying with the pooka, insisting that Sandy couldn't supervise Jack and Jamie on his own. Plus, she knew North was dying to get on that roller coaster again.
"The lady at ze counter gave zis to Sandy." He handed her the envelope she thought they had left behind. "And I think she was right. Go for it." He added with thumbs up.
Toothiana felt her cheeks burn, having forgotten about the exchange. She shooed the Cossack away, who laughed his hearty laugh before jumping into a portal.
"Sorry." His eyes averted to the side, feeling ashamed.
"Why did you do it, Aster?" She chided.
He remained silent, but his face was getting progressively redder with each second.
'C'mon mate, you just went through hell and back. Ya're alone with her and no one is gonna bust in. It can“t be that hard.'
"Because I wanted to look cool in front of you" He squeezed his eyes.
"Sorry, didn't hear you. What did you say?" Tooth asked, although she had heard him the first time. She just wanted to see the little details in his expressions in this new form.
He blushed further if possible."I did it because I wanted to look cool in front of ya."
"You think that getting on a roller coaster ride when you are at the brink of exhaustion is a good idea?" She questioned, half amused at watching him squirm.
Bunny had to admit it. He had been stupid. "It sounded better inside my head."
"You silly pooka." She chuckled and scooted closer to his side. "You always look cool to me."
She kissed his cheek again. This time her lips lingered a few seconds more than it was expected, making it a a tremendously sweet and meaningful gesture. He inhaled sharply.
While half of him was completely out of sorts, the other half felt like wrapping his arms around her and kissing her for real like he had wanted to do the whole day.
Maybe, that was the problem. Bunny felt too flustered and didn't know how to convey his interest to the woman he had loved for a long time without mucking it up.
The words crowded together in his brain and it made it harder to have a clear head to think with.
Not getting him to react, set her confidence back. Maybe he wasn't that into her?
They stared at each other, for who knows how long. Her eyes beckoned him. 'Please, Bunny.' She thought as loud as possible. 'Please, show me that you like me the way I think you do.'
Bunnymund knew. He knew he had to say or do something before it was too late.
"Screw it." He muttered while reaching out to take her into his arms and pull her against him, kissing her deeply.
It took her brain a few fractions of a second to realize that ohmygod he is kissing her. The kiss had been everything and nothing she had expected, at the same time. Her imagination had already concocted hundreds of scenarios with tender and soft kisses (mainly initiated by her), but this was different. It's true that the kiss was sweet and it sent her heart aflutter, but it was in no way soft. She had been waiting a lot to do this and she was damn well going to make up for the lost time. To find her eagerness equally matched by him only made the kiss more enticing.
Their new human forms were also a factor that had never been taken into account but was in the end a delightful surprise. She could feel the warm skin beneath her fingertips, the scruffiness of his stubble, all wrapped up by the scent of oakmoss and the most delicate hint of chocolate.
But no matter how much they wanted to continue, the lack of air made them end the kiss. And as they stared at each other once more, she hugged him tightly.
"Guess it ain't that bad for a first date." One of his arms encircled her waist and lifted her into his lap, placing a light kiss on her lips.
"Hold your horses, mister." She poked him on the chest with her dainty finger."You still owe me a date."
"What? What about today?" He stared in confusion. "That was totally a date."
"Was not! Hanging out with the guys and you fainting on me hardly qualifies as a date."
He leaned forward to close the gap between their lips once more, wanting to enjoy his new spur of courage while it lasted. "Then how can I make up to you, m'lady?"
Tooth tapped her chin with her finger (gesture that he found most endearing), thinking.
"After Easter, a picnic in the warren under the shade of the peach tree I Iike so much, the one near the stream. Mmm...With sandwiches and lemonade and only sugar-less dessert ok? If you're hanging with me, that's the price you gotta pay." Tooth instructed in a light-hearted tone. "And then...maybe help me collect baby teeth?" She said tentatively.
"Alright." He took her hand and planted a small kiss on the back of it to seal the deal.
"And now you have to rest." She disentangled herself and got up, but a small tug on her wrist stopped her.
"Stay?"
After such a roller coaster ride (both physical and emotional), nothing could sound better to Toothiana. Nodding she laid back next to him. Bunny did too, draping his arm around her waist and enjoying how her hair smelled of jasmines. His eyes started to close, aided by the feel of her warm body next to his and her heartbeat.
"But don't think you're off the hook for what happened today." She added, eyes closed and already drifting to sleep. "You driving yourself to the point of exhaustion is something were discussing tomorrow."
The pooka chuckled. "I love you, Tooth."
She smiled. "Me too, Bunny."
Hope you liked it
Don't forget to R&R :)
Also...Belt up: you are asked stop talking, be quite, in a angry way. (Aussie slang tidbit for ya!)
