Here's the new chapter, I hope you enjoy it! Thank you to my reviewers, The arithmancer, Me, rambkowalczyk and CoolFanfictionLover, and for everyone who favorited/followed. I honestly never expected this story to be so popular! At the suggestion of some of you I will have the order looking for Harry, but not the Death Eaters.
rambkowalczyk: Yes, Harry will be getting the dreams in the Department of Mysteries as they are caused by the connection between him and Voldemort. Until the Horcrux is removed (and I can't tell you when it will be or I will spoil the story :D) he will have the connection just like in cannon.
DISCLAIMER: I don't own the places, brands and characters you recognize, they are JK Rowlings, I only own the plot and the characters you don't.
Summary of last chapter: Antonia found out Harry was a wizard and they went to the wizarding part of Madrid with her cousin José, where Harry got his money and planned to get new clothes. He also found out that wizarding spain is more modern, as they have magical videogames and things like that, and that goblins there live more integrated with wizards than in Britain.
Chapter 5
They got home just in time for dinner and dropped the packages in Harry's room quickly to avoid Tía Ana's awkward questions, which Anto assured him would come. He had had an amazing time in the afternoon even if it had consisted mainly on robes, glasses and clothes shopping. The magical alley was familiar, but he had never been in a muggle mall before so 'El Corte Inglés (The English Cut, biggest Spanish mall chain)' had been a completely new experience. They had also drunk a smoothie, which Harry thought was incredible, and bought pens and notebooks for his courses.
'Even if you have to turn in your essays in parchment and quills, there's no reason why you couldn't take notes with normal pens in class!' had exclaimed Anto. Harry thought she was right, and he wondered why he (or Hermione for that matter) had never thought of it before. He could write much faster with a pen, and his notes would be more readable. This was his OWL year after all, so he needed to apply himself a little more.
They had ended the day with the girl convincing Harry to buy a magical camera so he could have memories of his summer. It looked just like the muggle camera Colin carried, but he could take any number of pictures he wanted until he decided to develop them, and they would move when he did. It could also be shrunk and had a feather-light charm on it, so he could use it as a necklace with a charm and carry it everywhere. It felt slightly strange for the teen to be buying things for himself that he did not absolutely need, but wanted. It would be nice to have pictures not only of his summer, but also of his memories at Hogwarts with Ron and Hermione. And if he was realistic, all that time he had paid rent at the Leaky Cauldron and bought clothes and ice-cream for himself for some weeks had not even made a dent in his vault, so money was not really an issue, no matter what he was used to. The more time he spent with Antonia, the more liking he took to just having fun without worrying all the time about his unwanted fame or the madman that wanted to kill him. After all, if Voldemort succeeded, he might as well have enjoyed life a little, right? He would have to make the most of the times when he was not in a life-or-death situation.
His thoughts were interrupted with the serving of dinner, and he sat politely in his place at the table.
'Your outfit is nice' Tía Ana told him approvingly, referring to the new t-shirt and shorts he was wearing. Apparently his cast-offs hadn't gone as unnoticed as he thought. His hosts must have believed he was in a rebellious gang or something.
'Thank you' he smiled politely at her, avoiding saying anything else. Anto suppressed a giggle and Harry felt his cheeks grow warm. He knew by now that he fancied her, but he didn't know what to do about it. How could he know if she liked him back? Maybe he should just leave it alone…after all, if he did something and it didn't work out, the rest of the summer would be incredibly awkward and that was the last thing he wanted. Yeah, that was for the best.
OoOoOoOoOo
It wasn't until later that night when he remembered to reply to Hermione, and when he picked up her letter he wasn't sure what he could say. He obviously could not tell her where he was… after all if they weren't telling him because the letters might get intercepted, it made sense that his could be intercepted too, and it would be terrible if the death eaters came searching for him in Madrid. No, he wouldn't put his hosts unnecessarily in danger. He wrote carefully using his new pen and paper, that way Hermione would know he was in the muggle world while it wouldn't mean anything for the death eaters.
Hey Hermione!
Yeah, my holidays have been great! I've learned lots of new things and seen many interesting places! We are with some relatives of my uncle and they have been very nice and welcoming. Their daughter is 13 so we've been hanging around a lot, she's cool. She helped me pick out new clothes and glasses so I can see better now.
Don't worry about it, I understand security is important! I obviously can't tell you where I am either for the same reason, but I'll tell you everything when I see you. I hope you guys are having fun and know what's going on. Can you tell me more news? I haven't been able to read the Prophet.
I haven't started my transfiguration homework yet, I've only done the potions one so far, so sorry I can't help you (not that you need it).
Anyway, say hi to Ron from me! How come you guys are together and didn't tell me? See you soon!
Harry
There, that wasn't too bad. The death eaters had no way of tracking Vernon's relatives, and if they did they wouldn't think he was in Spain. With any luck they would get to Marge first. He didn't want to risk telling Hermione that the Dursleys weren't there; she would have a fit if she knew they had left him with strangers. He sighed and wrote a letter to Sirius.
Hey Snuffles, how are you doing?
I'm doing good, my relatives took me on holiday and I've been having a great time and met really nice people, but I'd really like to have some news about what's happening. Can you tell me what's going on?
Harry
He hoped one of them would get his not so subtle hint and tell him what Voldemort was doing.
OoOoOoOoOo
Dumbledore called the second meeting to order, hoping for uneventful, if not productive information. The ministry front was not doing so well. Fudge was as in denial as ever and had called a Wizengamot urgent meeting for next week, in which the headmaster suspected they would strip him of his role in the ICW. Dumbledore did not particularly care about the title, but he did care about the loss of the chance to get international help to battle Voldemort, as the national forces weren't enough even if they had been collaborating. If they didn't get aid, the load on Harry's and his shoulders would be even heavier.
'Severus, what are Voldemort's immediate plans?' he asked seriously, commanding the attention of the other members.
'He wants to keep a low profile, so he will keep the attacks and raids to a minimum. He's focused on increasing his army; he's sent the death eaters to negotiate with other traditional dark families. He will also send a party to negotiate with giants and initiated contact with Fenrir Greyback to recruit werewolves' replied the potions master grimly 'finally, he's ordered Yaxley and Rookwood to find out as much as they can about the department of mysteries' layout and schedule so he can send someone to retrieve the prophecy'.
Dumbledore nodded gravely. He would have to speak to Hagrid about visiting the giants as soon as he got back to Hogwarts, and Remus would have to step up his interaction with the werewolves' colonies.
'So we need to keep the guard duty outside the prophecy hall. If anyone sees anything suspicious please report it immediately' he remarked while the other members' nodded. 'Now, any news on young Harry?' he asked.
'The two times I kept guard the Dursleys were gone and Harry didn't come out of his room' said Tonks boredly, missing the others' looks of disbelief.
'Er, in my shift the same thing happened' volunteered Dedalus Diggle, while others gave nervous nods.
'Same with me' said Emmeline Vance faintly 'It looks like they left, and maybe with Harry included…' the order exchanged worried looks, and Dumbledore paled and lost his customary twinkle in his eyes.
'Severus, is there a chance that Voldemort and the death eaters captured him?' asked Dumbledore. The other's looks turned to horror.
'Not at all, the Dark Lord has not been concerned with Potter's whereabouts' replied Snape with a sneer. The arrogant brat chose to disappear and all the order became upside down. Figures.
'All right, then don't mention his disappearance to the death eaters, it's better if they don't look for him' remarked Dumbledore, as if Snape didn't know.
'But Albus, where could they be?' asked Molly anxiously 'Harry could be in danger!'
'If I may' said Remus 'we could ask Ron or Hermione if Harry's written anything to them'.
'That's a good idea Remus, can anyone go fetch them?' asked Dumbledore and Molly went out of the room. He hoped Harry was not in trouble, though it seemed unlikely. Why had the Dursleys left the wards? They knew how important they were for their own protection. He was also slightly worried that no one had questioned their absence before the meeting. It looked like internal communication in the order was not optimal.
Ron and Hermione came down, eager to be part of the meeting. They had never been called in the middle of it before and it had taken them by surprise. They did not know anything that was going on and it had them on edge. Fred and George were developing a product that would let them eavesdrop, but they hadn't been successful so far.
'Mr. Weasley, Miss Granger, do you know anything about Harry's whereabouts? It has just come to our attention that neither he nor his relatives are in Surrey' said Dumbledore, unusually cutting straight to the point.
'He told me last week that he's on holiday with his relatives' replied Hermione 'I asked him more about it, but he hasn't replied yet'.
'Why didn't you tell us before?' asked Molly agitatedly. They could have started searching for him sooner.
'Well, I didn't know you were looking for him' pointed out Hermione 'the headmaster always tells Harry he needs to stay with his relatives, but I didn't know that it mattered if they were in the house or not'. Honestly, why were they asking her? They were the adults, it was their job! And if Harry was so important, why had it been a week until they noticed he was missing? She was worried that he hadn't replied, of course, but he must have been busy. He usually answered their letters very soon because he had nothing to do, but if he was going on holiday for once the situation was different. Personally, Hermione thought Harry needed a distraction right now. He had just seen a classmate die, for Merlin's sake!
'Don't worry about it Miss Granger, but please inform someone when Harry replies so we can rest easy and organize security for him' Dumbledore told her. Hermione agreed, frowning, and the two teens left the meeting. The headmaster thought carefully about this new development. He had been planning keep Harry at Privet Drive until two weeks before start of term; just enough to get his school supplies and spend some time with Sirius. He had to be uninformed, since Voldemort could use their mind connection to spy on the order and all their efforts would be doomed. Dumbledore had a few theories on what the connection meant, but he would have to explore them further before mentioning them to anyone else. Anyway, Harry and his relatives needed to stay at least three weeks at their home to recharge the wards, so assuming theirs was a short holiday, it would not make a difference. If it was longer, Harry would simply have less time at Grimmauld Place. They would still need to search for him of course. He was not under wards now, and if he encountered a death eater for any reason it would be disastrous. He would definitely send a letter to Petunia to chide her for leaving the wards and to ask her where they were.
'Ok, then we clearly don't need to watch over their house anymore. I'll ask Mrs. Figg to inform me when they are back. Meanwhile, the ones that were covering the shifts will spend that time searching for him' Dumbledore instructed the members, who responded with serious nods 'Once we find him we can keep guard over him and prevent attacks'.
'Their car is gone so they probably travelled in it, if we track it we'll probably find them' put in Tonks helpfully 'did anyone write down the license plate?' everyone looked at her like she had three heads (Hey, maybe she could try to morph into that) and she sighed, and proceeded to explain how to identify cars. Honestly, wizards were so hopeless in the muggle world. Thank Merlin for her dad.
OoOoOoOoOo
Harry was in the graveyard again, Cedric at his side, wondering what this place was.
'Do you think this is part of the task?'
'I don't know, wands out d'you reckon?'
Suddenly, he heard a voice that chilled him to the bones. 'Kill the spare' it said, and a cloaked figure shot a ray of green light at Cedric, who fell backwards instantly. Harry discarded his wand and knelt over Cedric, pleading for him to come back, but his eyes were blank and his body motionless. A spirit started coming out of Cedric's body, the handsome boy looked exactly like when he was alive, but with blood red eyes that pierced Harry, full of hate.
'You killed me' the spirit told him coldly 'just like you'll kill everyone that's close to you'.
'Noo, Cedric!' yelled Harry, anguished. But it was too late. A green light shot towards the spirit and got him in the chest, which exploded. The spirit's eyes returned to normal, with a panicked expression.
'Harry, save me! Harry, Harry!' he pleaded loudly, but Harry was frozen, his feet wouldn't move an inch, and his wand was nowhere to be seen.
'Harry, wake up!' Said a voice urgently, and he opened his eyes in shock, only to see Antonia's worried eyes looking into his. He was covered in sweat and all tangled in his sheets. He felt his cheeks slightly wet and brushed the tears away annoyingly. Why did she have to see him like this? She would never want to talk to him again; she actually looked scared of him.
'Here, have this' she told him awkwardly handing him a cup of hot chocolate. Harry raised an eyebrow in surprise. 'What? I'd come down to make one for myself when I heard you, and you look like you need it more' she told him. Harry nodded and wordlessly accepted it. He didn't think he had ever been so embarrassed in his life. Anto seemed to sense this because she told him she would go make a cup for herself and left the room. He sighed and leaned back against his pillows, suddenly very tired. It wasn't the first time he'd had that particular nightmare, and to be honest, he was glad to be awake before experiencing the rest of it. But he hoped the reason for his waking hadn't been her; he didn't want her to think he was weak or unable to live with his problems. He punched his bed angrily. Why were his nightmares so loud? And why did he have them at all? He was supposed to be stronger than that. If only he hadn't been so stupid and taken the cup alone…
'Do you want to talk about it?' asked Anto, having returned with her own cup. She was peering at him confusedly and worriedly.
'No' Harry snarled at her. He didn't want her pity, or anyone's for that matter. He just wanted to be left alone.
Antonia looked taken aback. 'Well I think you should talk to someone about this Cedric person, even if it's not me' she told him 'keeping things in never helps, trust me I've tried'. He doubted she'd ever tried, as she had told him many personal things in the last few days and she hardly knew him, but he didn't care right now. Why couldn't she let him be? She was so nosy.
'Fine, Cedric was a classmate and I saw him die not a month ago because of my stupidity' he snapped 'happy now?' Anto had gone pale and her eyes widened, and he felt oddly satisfied. Serves her right for prying in my stuff he thought vindictively.
'You saw a classmate die?' she asked quietly, looking at him intensely.
'Yeah, and it was my fault' he answered trying to avoid his voice from breaking. He felt oddly defeated now, and his rapid change of moods was scaring him.
'Harry, have you gone to a psychologist after that?' she asked seriously. The question caught him off guard, and irritated him a little. No one had even suggested one to him, and he didn't see why he should go. He was strong enough to deal with this on his own, and how could some random person who didn't even know him make him feel better? He was not about to tell his problems to a stranger.
'I'm not crazy, and I don't need to tell my whole life to a random person' he snapped 'plus they would lock me up for even mentioning magic is real'.
'Psychologists are not for crazy people, they are for people dealing with difficult things, and seeing a classmate die is a difficult thing' she told him matter-of-factly, though he could see she was trying to control her temper 'and we could see if the wizarding world has some of them, how could they not? I can ask José. Needing help sometimes does not make you weak you know…not asking for it when you need it does'. Harry frowned. Getting help was a foreign concept to him. After all he had been alone for the first eleven years of his life, and each time he had asked an adult for help they had failed him. Lockhart with the chamber, McGonagall with the stone, Dumbledore every summer, and his elementary school teachers when Dudley accused him of things he did. He couldn't be blamed for not trusting them.
Suddenly, Anto hugged him warmly, taking him by surprise. It wasn't overbearing or extra tight like Mrs. Weasley and Hermione's hugs, but soft and comforting, and he welcomed the closeness. He hugged her back tightly automatically, wondering how someone he had just met could make him feel better when no one else had succeeded.
'I'm sorry, I don't want to pressure you' she told him after a while. He could see tears threatening to fall from her eyes. 'I think you should get help, but if you don't want to I'll be here if you want to talk'.
'I'll think about it' he said tiredly but sincerely. He had felt slightly better when he talked about it, and maybe talking to a therapist wouldn't be that bad. After all, he wouldn't have to worry about disappointing someone he didn't know.
'I should go back to bed' Anto said quietly 'I hope you have a better night now'. She kissed his cheek and scrambled off the bed before walking out of his room and upstairs. He stared at her pensively, a warm feeling spreading in his stomach. He was now used to kissing her on both cheeks as greeting, but somehow this felt different. He could tell she really cared.
I hope you liked it, please tell me your thoughts and suggestions. Constructive criticism is welcome!
I assumed Harry has two months of holidays since sometimes JK Rowling mentions his term ends on June 30th, though I'm not completely sure because her dates are messed up sometimes and I get confused. Anyway, three months was too much, because as much fun as his holidays will be, I have to get on with the story to the effects at Hogwarts and to the war that the new Harry will have. As you can see, he's already a bit changed in this chapter.
