"You are a surprisingly difficult person to track down, Aaron."
He looked up from the file he was working on at the sound of his brother's voice. He had not been expecting to see him in that moment, or any time soon, as Sean had not been in contact since Haley's funeral. And he could have kept in better contact himself, but he had been so wrapped up in everything that had been happening so close to home that reaching out to his brother had been the last thing on his mind. "Well, there have been a few changes in my life since you last saw me."
"Yeah, like you being made Section Chief! That's a serious step up the ladder to Director."
Aaron laughed as he shook his head, gesturing for Sean to take a seat in chairs across from his desk as he opened up his bottom drawer and pulled out his bottle of bourbon and two glasses, pouring them each a small amount before handing one of the glasses to his brother. "It was an unexpected promotion, yes, but my wife decided that she wanted to take early retirement."
Sean choked on the liquid in his mouth, dribbling some of it onto his shirt as he looked at Aaron in astonishment. "I'm sorry, run that by me again?"
He rubbed his hand across his head as he gave Sean a sheepish look. "I guess that I have been really remiss in letting you know what's happening in our lives. I just assumed that since you never reached out after Haley's funeral to see how I was doing that we were going to go back to the way we normally kept things."
"That's how we got into this problem, Aaron. And I think that now is the time to start talking again. Because we're both going through a lot of life changes in the current moment, and neither of us has reached out to the other to tell them about it."
There was something more settled about his brother, Aaron realized, and he nodded as he gave Sean a small smile. "I think that that sounds like the perfect idea. Finish your drink, and then you can head over to my new home."
"Or I can ride with you. I took the subway here, since I flew into DC."
Aaron nodded as he swallowed the last of his drink, glad that they had only had the small bit of alcohol, as it wouldn't affect his ability to drive. "I have a little work to finish here before I head out, though, as I wasn't expecting a visitor. If you want, you can have Carri show you to the canteen and you can pick up a snack. I'll text Jessica to let her know that we'll have an extra person for supper tonight."
Sean nodded as he threw back the last of his bourbon before getting to his feet. "Carri's the one who said I could head in here, right?" Aaron nodded. "Pretty swanky promotion where you get your own assistant."
"I inherited her from Erin, which was nice, as I didn't have to interview anyone for the position. She's been a godsend as I've transitioned from active agent to paper pusher." Sean let out a sharp bark of a laugh as he left the office, and Aaron pulled out his phone and sent off a quick text to Jessica, telling her about the change in plans. With that done, he bent back over the file he was working on, finishing it as thoroughly and quickly as he could so that he was able to spend the most time with Sean.
After signing off on that current file, he placed it in his outbox before packing up his briefcase and heading out into the other office. Sean was talking animatedly with Carri and Penelope, and Aaron shook his head a little at the sight. "Hotch! You didn't let us know that Sean was here!"
"I didn't know he was going to be here until he just appeared in front of my desk, Penelope. And before you ask, no, you may not come home with us for supper. I have the feeling that we're going to be talking late into the night about family issues. Though if he's staying for any length of time, we can talk about having the team over for a meal. If you're not out in the field."
She pouted at him, and he just gave her a look before turning his attention to Sean. "I take it that's my cue to follow you?" his brother joked, and he nodded. "I figured as much. Talk to you ladies later!"
"Bye Sean!" Carri called out as they left the office, and he chuckled a little as they made their way over to the elevators.
"You really shouldn't flirt with them. Penelope's married, and I believe that Carri has a partner."
"Flirting is harmless, Aaron. Besides, I know that it can't go anywhere, too. That's one of the things that I came here to talk about, actually."
Those words piqued his attention, but he knew that he wouldn't get any answers until after supper and Jack was in bed. For the moment, he just nodded and led Sean to his car. The drive was quite nice, as they caught up on little things that they had missed out in the last few years, and he learned that Sean was now a part owner of a successful bar in New York City. While it wasn't the choice that he would have made for his little brother, he seemed proud and happy with that accomplishment, so Aaron bit his tongue in order to keep the peace between them.
"This is a nice house," Sean said as Aaron pulled into the driveway, and he nodded. "Did you and your wife pick this out?"
"It's actually her house, Jack and I moved into it when we decided that this relationship was going to last. Erin, well, she knew before I did that this would be forever."
Sean nodded as he climbed out of the car and made his way up to the door. Aaron was a little slower in coming, as he wanted to make certain that he had everything before he entered. Before he could open the door, however, Georgia had beat him to it, giving them both a welcoming smile as she stepped aside to let them in. "Mother's in the dining room with Jack, setting the table, if you want to head right in. I'm helping Jess with the food."
Aaron could tell the exact moment that Sean figured out just who he was married to, as his eyes widened in shock as he turned his head to look at him. "You married her?" he hissed, and Aaron nodded sheepishly. "Oh, I know that there is a good story behind that, and I cannot wait to drag it out of your lips," he said as they entered the dining room.
"You must be Sean," Erin said graciously as she caught sight of them, and his brother nodded as he took hold of her outstretched hand and gave it a firm shake before he noticed the prominent baby bump. "Ah, yes, our little surprise. I take it that this is not the first one that you've experienced since entering our house."
Sean shook his head as he sank down into the closest chair, and Erin let out a soft laugh as she sat down next to him. Jack quickly hugged his uncle before starting to chatter wildly away about his Mama Erin and how he was going to have a little sister, and even when Jessica and Georgia brought in the food, it was hard to get a word in edgewise with his son just dominating the conversation. This kept up until it was time to put Jack in bed, and Georgia offered to do that while Jessica cleaned up their dishes.
"Let's head into the living room and get some adult time," Erin said as she pushed herself to her feet. Sean quickly stood as well, taking hold of her arm as they left the room. Aaron rolled his eyes as he followed behind, watching the way that Erin naturally schmoozed with his brother. She had always been good at politics, and this time she was using it to her advantage, in order to get to know Sean better. It was good to see her in action once more, since Aaron knew that she hadn't had much reason to play politics since leaving the BAU. "Now, I am certain that you have a lot of questions about how your brother and I ended up married and with child."
Sean shook his head as he settled onto the settee, folding his hands across his stomach as he stretched out his legs, looking at them both with a grin. "Nope. I think that Jack filled me in on everything that I would need to know. That smart little guy prayed for a miracle and an angel, and God sent Aaron you. There's something cosmically funny about how my brother ended up falling in love with his hard ass boss, after he was such a hard ass to me about my life choices. Though I think that he's mellowed out considerably since Haley died and you entered his life as a partner."
"I'd like to think that we both rounded off the sharp edges of our lives to make something softer for us, when we needed it most. So, if there are no questions for us, may I ask a few of my own?"
"Of course, Erin," his brother smoothly replied, giving Erin a lazy grin, and she giggled a little as she cuddled closer to Aaron, resting her head on his shoulder. "My life is an open book to my brother's wife."
"Well, I suppose the most obvious question is why have you come to visit us now? After all this time has passed?"
"She still doesn't pull punches, does she?" Sean asked him, and Aaron shook his head before kissing Erin softly. "Well, my fiancée has decided that I need to have my family, my whole family, at my wedding. And before you ask, Aaron, yes, that includes our mother."
"You're engaged?"
"You're not the only one who can keep secrets," Sean shot back, and he shrugged a little before nodding. "So, anyway, I thought that I'd come ask you in person to attend my wedding. I know, you don't want to see our mother again, but there are some things that can't be avoided. I promise, I'll have someone keep her away from you and Erin and Jack, if you come."
"And when is the wedding?" Erin asked quietly, rubbing her baby bump, and Aaron let out a long breath, thinking that there might not be a way for them to attend, depending on Sean's answer.
"Here's the thing, I may have procrastinated. A lot. We're getting married on August fifth."
Aaron swallowed thickly as he stared at his brother. "That's in six weeks." Sean nodded. "There is no way that we can attend, Erin will only be thirty weeks by that point!"
"And thirty weeks is well into the point of viability, Aaron. We will discuss this later, with my doctor, but for the moment, you can plan on four of us attending, Sean. Somehow, I have the feeling that my darling husband will want our Georgia to look after me, just in case something happens." Aaron could tell by the tone of Erin's voice that her mind was made up, and he only hoped that Doctor Heth would be able to get through to her the importance of not taking a risk like travelling for a wedding.
