True Lies
Chapter 36: Wide Awake
By: Michelle2
Note: This fanfic takes place 1 ½ years after X-men 2. While I enjoyed the various films since X-men 2, I always envisioned my trilogy as the sequels. The imagination is awesome.
True Lies is the third part of my trilogy. Part 1: The Truth Hurts. Part 2: Sweet Little Lies.
As always: I don't own the characters or make money off my fanfics. I enjoy having fun.

Logan had to admit it. He enjoyed watching some of his friends feel the pain. Having a healing factor made him susceptible to all types of experiments, including getting hit by a tasering device. But there was something satisfying watching Scott shake in pain.
Emma sat up first, even though she was hit last. He extended his hand to her, and she blinked to her senses. "Thanks for believing me."
Emma smiled, accepting his hand. He pulled her up. "Thanks for trusting me."
Logan shrugged and grunted, "Okay." He glanced at Cyclops, Mystique, and Rogue. "What's wrong with them?"
"It's not just the tase. Remembering isn't easy," Emma replied. "Sometimes, you remember the bad along with the good."
"You seemed fine."
"I came to terms with my past. It is something I cannot erase, even if I can mess with peoples' minds. Plus, I could prepare myself more thanks to being a telepath."
"Lucky you," Logan answered.
"I'll try to comfort them,"
He walked over to Mystique, while Emma tapped into their minds.
"You look surprised to see me," Logan said. Mystique's angry eyes stared up at him as he offered his hand. "You gonna take it or what, Darlin'?"
Mystique took his hand, and he pulled her up. "Where am I?"
"Let's just say, you're not in Kansas anymore," Logan said.
No one was amused by his comment. Slowly but surely their memories of the night in Genosha came back to Scott.
"We were on the ground moving toward that mansion, or what was left of it," Scott said. "There was a red light."
"I tried to tell you all," Mystique said. She was in another location on a Helicarrier. She remembered Agent Coulson and frickin' Christmas cookies. Over and over, she told them about the images in the diary, but noooooo, they did not listen. "You saw her."
"Her?"
Mystique found herself the odd man out. She wasn't one of the X-men; she was considered a villain if anything. "The Scarlet Witch…she was in the red."
"All we saw was red, and it consumed us." Logan agreed, but something troubled him. "But that's a lot of power for her to handle."
"Where's Professor Xavier?" Scott asked, turning to Emma.
Emma shook her head. "I lost him when we were making our way to that abandoned mansion. I don't even feel him now."
"We need to find him, Logan," Scott said. He turned to Mystique. He hated to admit it, but she could be useful. "We could use your help."

Do you really think you can get away with this?
Wanda smirked. She watched as her children ran happily around the mansion playing hide and go seek. William and Thomas did their best to hide from her, but also let her win. Acting surprised when she caught each one made her squeal in delight.
"Haven't I already?" She replied. "This is all I ever wanted…and what you denied me…"
You know this is not right.
"Don't try to lecture me on morality."
Wanda.
"Don't Wanda me!" She exclaimed. "You have no right to lecture me. No right to judge me!"
Who said we were the ones judging?
Wanda looked around the room. Her children stared in her direction. They were no longer laughing and playing.
"Mom, who are you talking to?" William asked.
Wanda could only smile. "Just me being silly. We have had a busy morning…and it's lunch time…let's get a bite to eat and Talia needs a nap soon…Okay."
Even she had trouble believing herself.

Remy danced with Rogue as they listened to "White Christmas." People surrounded them, but she didn't care. In that moment, it was just them.
Rogue stared into his eyes. "You seem lost in thought."
"I do?"
"Yeah," Rogue replied. She leaned her head on his chest as they danced slowly to the music.
His heart raced. "I have been t'inking a lot."
"You have."
"Yeah…I been t'inking a lot about us," Remy replied. He stepped back from her. His eyes were bright and full of mischief. "When we git back ta New York, we are gonna move in de boathouse."
"Ah know…it is a big step for us, Remy," Rogue said. "Ah know you are nervous. Ah am too, but Ah kinda excited too. Aren't you?"
"I am, Rogue." He reached out and traced her white stripe with his fingers. "I love you."
"Ah love you, too." She smiled as he took her hand.
"Rogue, I cannot imagine what my life would be without you," he said. "I spent many years searching for happiness. Then, I found you, and I knew I was where I was supposed to be. I love you, Rogue."

"Rogue.
"Rogue."
She sat with her knees curled up, her chin resting on top. Where did he go? What happened?
"Rogue."
She felt his familiar hand on her shoulder. Logan always calmed her down when most could not. Perhaps, he was one of the few who wasn't afraid of her powers. Remy was the other. Where did he go? "Where's Remy?" she asked, her voice shaking.
"Don't know, Darlin," Logan replied. "We're trying to figure things out too."

Emil wondered the hallways of wherever the hell he was. He snuck around the corners and slipped into rooms. Most were empty and useless to them. He did this a few times. So far, he had avoided contact with those on this ship. Pretending to be a janitor could only last so long before somebody knew where he was. He could feel her in his head then. Briefly, she went away.
When Emil slipped into what was his seventh room, it was exactly what he was looking for. Rows of computers in a single occupant. A perfect target. A perfect place. A perfect job.
The occupant was a blonde haired guy similar to his age. He studied the computer. Easily Emil snuck up on him. All he had to do was tiptoe; those years in ballet proved to be worthwhile.
When the young occupant realized he wasn't alone, a fight ensued. It was no contest, really. The guy had a Taser. He dealt with Tasers before. Especially in New Orleans.
Emil swept the occupant's feet from underneath him, knocking him to the ground. The Taser was loose; the two of them scrambled, grabbing, reaching for it. Emil was a little bit quicker. He grabbed it. He knew how aim. Even though he wasn't an assassin, he knew enough. He knew enough to pull the trigger and zap the guy until he twitched on the floor.
"I love not bein' on de receiving end of dis t'ing," Emil said as he cuffed the occupant's hands behind him.
The occupant struggled to get loose. " Who the hell are you? Where the hell am I? How did I get here? What? What is going on? What are you doing?"
"Name's Lapin, mon ami" Emil said in his thick Cajun accent. "Remember it."

It was impossible trying to log in Emil's laptop. The more he typed, the more frustrated he got.
"Anyt'ing?" BellaDonna demanded.
Remy shook his head. The woman was impossible. "Nah." He closed the laptop. "I ain't getting' in."
"Great, so ya givin' up," BellaDonna fumed and began her pacing. They had reason to worry. "What you t'inking? Emil got caught. We compromised."
"Possible," Remy replied. He couldn't deny it. He was afraid of that too.
"Ya know what dat means, Remy?"
"I know what dat means."
"Ya even care?"
Remy looked away. Impossible. He hated to admit it; he liked it in Genosha. He wasn't a freak with crazy eyes. He was normal here. Normal. "I care, Bel." But there was not love in his voice. "Dis ain't my home."
"We can't go back home if we can't complete dis mission," BellaDonna said. She finally stopped her pacing and steaming. She was afraid. "We'd be exiled. I can't be exiled. I can't be away from my home."
"And ya t'ink I can," he replied. It was honest and came out of nowhere. Like it came from someone else.
"What are we gonna do?"
Remy pinched his brow. More whisky would be a blessing and curse right now. "I have de first scans Emil made. Dey incomplete, but dey'll have ta do."
"And Emil?"
"I'm hopin' he just got distracted."
BellaDonna sat next to him. It was the first time she had been completely calm since she arrived in Genosha. "We have ta complete our mission, Remy. Ya know dat."
"I know. I know," Remy replied. "Right now, all we can do is wait. Ain't been 24 hours yet."
"I needa git outta here," BellaDonna said, standing up. Her time of peace had passed He knew what she was capable of now. She was angry. It was not good that she was angry. That meant she was deadly. Emil was in trouble. They were cousins, he and Remy. But Remy could only do so much when his wife was angry.
Remy grabbed her hand before she could walk away from him. "Why don't ya go back ta ya room and calm down a bit? Meet me in two hours. At de bar. We get something ta eat. Give us time ta t'ink. Clear our heads. Figure out our next move."
BellaDonna snatched her hand away. "You wanna play husband and wife at a time like this?"
"Sort of." Remy smirked. "Depends on if ya think setting a trap is romantic."

"I t'ink de big question is, Why ya tryin' ta track my cuz?" Emil said, as navigated Augustus' computer screen. The man was tracking, or trying to track, Remy LeBeau for some reason.
Augustus rolled over, the handcuffs slowing him down from sitting up. "Look. I have no idea what is going on here."
Emil scrolled through the different images on the screen. BellaDonna was being tracked too. "Prove it."
Augustus sighed. "The last thing I remember is laying down in a hotel room for the night."
Emil smiled. "Non famille."
"I am assuming you mean family," Augustus replied. "And in any case, no. I have no family."
Emil typed away. This place was a goldmine of information at his fingertips, though he had never encountered anything like it. "So ya ain't gotta clue where ya be too?"
"No," Augustus scooted himself up against a wall.
"If ya tryin' ta git out dem handcuff, ya gonna have a hard time," Emil said, focused on the screen. "Ain't never seen tech like dose. Dese ain't amateurs whereva we are."
Augustus cursed under his breath as he realized his captor was right. "You trying to hack in the system or something."
"Tryin'. Homme, I succeeded."

Rogue took deep breaths. All the memories she had buried deep were now awake and haunting her. It was bad enough she had to deal with the craziness of people she absorbed. That was easy. But her own memories. Those ones before the mansion. No. No, those were her memories and ones she never wanted to deal with again.
"Is she alright?"
Rogue looked up at the sound of the voice. Mystique. She was not the person she wanted to see at that moment. "I'm fine…My head is a bit fuzzy."
"Stand up, Rogue," Logan said, and he helped her to her feet. Why wasn't her own father as caring and respectful as the grumpy Wolverine? None of it made sense.
"Where am I?"
"A helicarrier," Mystique said. "Where exactly? We're not really sure."
"Wow. Way to be confident," Rogue replied.
"Take it easy now, Darlin'." Logan said.
He let her go, allowing her to stand on her own two feet. She felt dizzy, but then again, who didn't? "What are we all doing here? I don't understand."
"We were on a mission," Scott explained. "Things didn't go as planned."
"Rogue, I am going to ask you one question. What is the last thing you remember?" Emma asked.
Rogue thought hard. She gathered her thoughts and navigated through the haze. Gulfport .Yes, she was in Gulfport. Christmas trees. Lights, Remy. Screaming. Redness. It came so fast. "Remy and I were in Mississippi. At a Christmas light show. And then we saw this red light coming from like the Gulf of Mexico. Everyone was screaming. And that's all I remember until waking up here."
"We all saw the same thing," Scott replied. "How? Just how? How is this even possible?'
Mystique shook her head. "I told you it was her. It was the Scarlet Witch. Only she could do this."
"That doesn't explain how. She doesn't have that type of power. She's not…an Omega."
"The professor would know and be able to explain this."
"Then, where exactly Is the professor?"
They argued around her. What was the point? All of them were in the same position. No one knew where they were. No one knew what to do, and no one knew where the professor was.
"Excuse me, Director Frost, we have a situation on hand."
The interruption didn't help much. But it stopped them from arguing.
"Don't you see I'm in the middle of things. I…I don't want to be disturbed," Emma replied.
"I know, I know you're…you're busy with all the craziness of when the Wolverine goes berserk. But…but you don't understand. The human. He um, he um hacked into the Helicarrier." The young mutant explained. He held a tablet tight to his chest.
"What?" Emma tried to remember her memories in this reality. Emil Lapin. They were integrating Emil Lapin. He was confused too. "Where is he now?"
"We are not sure," the mutant replied. He handed her the tablet. "But we think he's in one of the tech rooms."
Emma scrolled through the information. Three persons of interests were listed, but the only name she recognized was Remy LeBeau. "Rogue?"
"What?" Rogue replied fighting back her demons.
"Does Remy have a cousin named Emil Lapin?" Emma asked.
Rogue looked at her funny. "Yeah. Why?"

Emil was having way too much fun hacking into the Helicarrier, but he had yet to figure out where he was or how he got here.
"You're pretty good at that," Augustus said, still struggling with the handcuffs.
"I'll take dat as a compliment instead an insult," Emil replied. He studied a map on the screen. "Ya eva heard of a place called Genosha?"
"Yeah," Augustus replied. "It's an island, somewhere off of Africa. It's an island with a lot of mutants."
"Never heard of it," Emil responded.
Augustus stared at him, studying him with his eyes.
"Homme, dat eye stare thingy is creepy."
"You're not a mutant."
Emil paused and flexed his fingers. "Non, but my cuz is. His eyes ain't as creepy as yours though."

"Do you even know where you are going?" Logan asked.
Emma was lost, even though she could feel Emil Lapin's confusion and track him, she did not spend enough time on a Helicarrier to know where she was. "He's in a room above us."
Logan chuckled. "This place can be a maze if you don't know what you are doing."
"And you do?" Scott asked.
"Back in the war, I spent a couple months on one of these, or one that floats on water," Logan replied. "That's…We go this way."
Rogue lingered behind them, following as they wondered around like lost sheep.
"So you're still not talking to me," Mystique said, joining her side.
"What is there to talk about, Momma?"
"You had me worried back there," Mystique replied. "That is all. I suppose you have every right being mad at me."
"You set up Remy. Why wouldn't I be mad?" Rogue answered. "Everything you do has your own agenda."
Mystique sighed. She couldn't argue with her there.

Augustus gave up trying to slip out the handcuffs. He stared at the door, hoping someone would help him out. Meanwhile, Emil typed away on the computer, lost in discovery and chatting away about all the stuff he found.
"Dis gets weirder and weirder," Emil said, opening a file on his cousin. He knew damn well Remy divorced BellaDonna, but his file said otherwise. BellaDonna's file said she was married to Remy too. Her brother, Julien, was alive. It didn't make sense.
"At least one of us is having fun," Augustus said. He leaned back on the wall and stared at the door. He could feel a presence in his head. He didn't know how, but he knew he was not alone. Is somebody there? I'm here. Help me.
Emil pulled up his own file. With a few clicks, he could make it…all…go…away. "Quoi?" He suddenly felt hot, scared, emotional…"Non. Non. Non."
Emil Lapin
Age: 25
Home: New Orleans, Louisiana
Parents: Emil Lapin, Sr. (deceased), Celeste LeBeau Lapin (deceased)
DECEASED
"Non, Non, Non," Emil stood up shaking his head at the computer. His mother can't be dead. He was just talking to her. He was in her home talking to her.
Celeste LeBeau Lapin. DECEASED. Breast cancer.
The door flung open. Emil pulled out the Taser and took aim. He recognized the guy with glasses, but he didn't know who the blond or grumpy guy were.
Calm down. We're not trying to hurt you.
"Finally," Augustus said to the visitors. "This guy is losing it."
Emil tried to fire the Taser, but he couldn't. Why couldn't he?
"Rogue, I need you to calm him down," Emma said.
"Emil," Rogue said as she stepped forward.
Emil Lapin relaxed, though he couldn't move. "Rogue." He was happy to see a familiar face.
"These are friends of mine and Remy's," Rogue explained. "We're not here to hurt you. We need your help."
"Rogue, what's goin' on? One minute I'm wit ma mère, next I in an integration room with that guy with red glasses."
"Yeah, okay. You gotta trust me, Emil." Rogue glanced to Emma. "You can let him go now."
Emil dropped the taser and then seemed to have control over himself again.
"We're trying to figure everything out, Emil," Rogue explained. "But right now, we need your help to track down Remy."
"That's great," Augustus said. "In the meantime, can someone unhandcuff me?"

Wanda kissed Talia on the forehead.
"I not sleepy," Talia yawned.
"You need a nap, so you can get all rested and play some more," Wanda explained as she tucked her in the bed.
"Are William and Thomas going to nap too?" Talia asked.
Wanda glanced at them. "I think they are tired too."
"We're not," William yawned.
Thomas yawned too. "We're not tired. Yawning is just contagious," he explained. "Fine, we'll take it easy. But we're not tired."
Wanda smiled as the boys sat down on a lounge chair.
"Push over."
"I was here first."
Wanda turned her attention back to Talia, who fought to keep her eyes open. She began singing.
We've been waiting for you

Now you are here

More perfect than I imagined

Wanda looked at Talia asleep in the bed. "Sweet dreams, Talia."
She stood up, walking around the room. William and Thomas both slept in the lounge chair. Not sleepy, were you? She smiled.
And what about you, Wanda?
Her mood soured. She walked along through the mansion and out to the gardens. The beauty surrounding her temporarily shifted to darkness revealing what lied beneath.
"Something the matter, Wanda?" Professor Xavier asked.
"You think you two are so clever playing these mind games with me?" Wanda replied.
"We are not the ones playing games," Dr. Strange answered. "What you are doing…could be disastrous for us all."
"Disastrous. Having you as Sorcerer Supreme, that is disastrous. This is just…everything we've all wanted," Wanda explained. "Perfection. Family. I've realized my father's dream. Sorry your roles were cut."
"Dream," Xavier motioned to the unconscious Magneto beside him. "This fantasy world you created is not what your father wanted. If anything, this is his nightmare."
Wanda smirked. "Stop trying to take away what is mine."
"It's interesting how you are the only one who benefits."
She turned from them, closing the out the darkness.
