Jasper's roar had me lose focus, my eyes searching the field for him. There were several Volturi bodies on the ground and a few random body parts. I finally saw Jasper, with five guards on him, one pulling on each appendage and the fifth at his head. They were pulling him into pieces, the cracks visible to my eyes, even from across the field.
"NO!"
The same moment the scream tore from my mouth, I felt my left leg be torn off along with my hand on the one arm that was still working.
Rage, like I had never experienced, rose within me.
Scenes of my memories and life overwhelmed me. My dad's lifeless body. The heads of my friends and schoolmates. Jasper on the verge of destruction on this battlefield. My own body parts paled in comparison.
I jumped up fifteen feet in the air, lower than if I had both legs. The height allowed me to see that the few of us on our side were all missing body parts. Although several Volturi guard were strewn across the field as well, we were at a large disadvantage.
My eyes zeroed in on Jasper, his both arms now being tossed to the side and the two vampires joining with holding the body still while the others pulled on the legs and head. I had no arms (or well, one arm that was only slightly attached) and only one leg, but I would give up everything for him, my mate.
A growl emitted from deep within my chest as I felt my shield shoot out in all directions. As I landed, the field was clear and silent. All vampires, regardless of who they were, had been pushed out and thrown over a kilometre away. That is, all except Jasper.
Rushing to his side on one leg, I dropped to the ground by his head, my forehead resting against his. "Jasper. What do I do? How do I help you?"
"You already did, Darlin'." He managed to carefully sit up, with no arms as support, and surveyed the area. The other vampires had returned but were trapped outside of my shield. "Darlin', please, don't keep out our family."
I looked towards the direction he had, and noticed that the others were holding Peter, Char, Rose, and Emmett in headlocks by several vampires. All were missing parts and had venom leaking, Their eyes black from thirst.
Focusing, I pushed my shield out in that area only, slowly until I managed to envelope them and only them into my shield. Once fully encompassed, I tugged, and the holds of the guard failed as they flew inside.
"Oh, thank god, Chickie!" Peter sagged to the ground; relief evident about him as his shoulders dropped.
"Holy fuck! Anyone seen my foot?" Emmett hobbled up searching through body parts.
The foot bounced off the back of his head as Rose had thrown it towards him with her only arm still attached.
"Thanks, babe. Here, let me help with your arm."
Rose was the only one who said nothing. She focused on finding the parts of her that had been removed and held them tight in place as they fused together, her eyes closed, and teeth clenched.
We became entertainment, I guess, for the Volturi, as they stood there, on the outside of the shield, glaring and waiting for their chance. I pushed a little more and saw them all slide back a few inches and was satisfied I still had control.
Using my teeth, I dragged his arms towards his shoulders and waited as he fused together. At the same time, I used the ground to force my dangling arm back to socket and I felt the burn as it tried to heal.
A whimper escaped my lips when I felt Jasper's hand cup my cheek. "I know, Isabella. It hurts. Breathe through and relax. You did good."
Turning my gaze to him, his black eyes softened. "I love you, Jasper! I cannot exist without you."
"And I, you. But we will have time for that later. Let's find your leg and make sure everyone is at least whole before we face them again."
I nodded as we helped each other up. Once all six of us had fully functioning bodies again, we stood in line. I reached out and touched the new ragged scar on Jasper's shoulder.
Honour.
Determination.
Obedience.
The feelings were strong and almost dropped me to my knees. Jasper was gasping while gritting his teeth. I lifted my hand, and the scar was glowing.
"Well, call the shit pile my uncle and cover me in manure. You have another gift." Peter spoke.
"What?" I asked.
"Where in the world do you get your stupid sayings?" Rose scoffed at the same time.
Peter simply pointed at my mating mark and then back at Jasper's glowing shoulder scar. "Look for yourself. Her mating mark is glowing just as his injury is." Turning back to me, Peter asked, "Do you feel anything different? Can you feel that gift working?"
I shook my head. "No. I only get strange emotions that I know are not necessarily mine."
Jasper touched my mating mark, and I could not help the shiver that shot down my spine. "Try again. Describe the emotions, please."
Swallowing the lump, I nodded and reached out gently touching the spot his arm had just fused together again, the scar still already red.
Honour, determination, obedience.
"I think I feel honour, determination, obedience. But I don't know. That doesn't make sense."
Jasper smiled. "Oh darlin'. It does. That is what the vampire was feeling when he took my arm on that side. But how do you sense that in the scar?"
Resting my head against it, I sighed. "I don't know. But why would someone feel 'obedience'?"
"'Cause, they are forced to be part of the guard. Chelsea can force fake bonds and holds many of them loyal to Aro and the kings." Emmett spat out.
I kissed Jasper's shoulder before moving back to look at Emmett. "Is she here?"
He nodded and pointed to a small, pale woman with light brown hair that had stayed back out of the fighting. Staying with the kings and with the Cullens.
Rose gasped and pointed back to Jasper's shoulder. I looked; afraid I had somehow made it worse. But what I saw shocked me even further. His shoulder was clear, no scar was present as if no injury had ever occurred. Jasper was looking at it as he rotated the shoulder and arm, testing it out.
"I can feel the emotions given when injury is made and somehow remove them both?"
"Seems like. But Chickie, this might be something we unpack later. They are all getting a little antsy. Perhaps we can make the shield a little smaller or at least allow sound to penetrate. Shall we try a conversation again?" Peter nodded his head towards the kings.
I took a breath and my shield snapped back towards me. Stumbling from the unseen impact, I staggered a few feet back before shaking my head. Coming back to the line, I spoke out towards the kings.
"You say that we interfered with mates. I challenge you to explain whom you were speaking about. My mate stands beside me now. Our marks visible. The rest of our family here, are also mates. We have not interfered with each other in any way."
The white-haired king spoke in response, spitting and angry as he did. "You lie. Aro here read Marcus and agreed that someone had interfered with mates. The charges against you all stand validated. They stole you away from this mind reading idiot."
I laughed. I couldn't help it. It was just so absurd.
The taller black-haired king who must have been Marcus spoke in response while I laughed. "Actually, Caius, Brother. You misunderstood what Aro had said. He said that someone had interfered. He did not confirm that it was Bella nor Jasper."
"Isabella, please." I spoke, as my laughter died.
Marcus dipped his chin at me in apology, but Caius flared his nostrils as he glared at both of the other kings. Aro clapped his hands.
"Ah, yes. Isabella. Such a beauty you are. And dear Caius. Marcus is right. I never did say who had interfered when I heard his side."
"What!? That is crazy! She is my mate. That brute, that animal, that beast stole her and messed with her mind and memories." Edward was ranting, rushing forward.
"Bullshit! You are the brute. Mentally and emotionally abused me. Well, I simply had enough." I spat out, crouching into a battle stance.
"Darlin'," Jasper's gentle twang reached my ears, and it calmed me. I straightened.
"I apologize for my outburst. But that manchild of a vampire is really hard to endure. Please, continue and explain than what you had meant, Aro. Or King, as you may prefer." I provided a half curtesy, in an attempt to show honesty in my apology.
"Yes, King does sound nice. Though most just call me 'Master'." He raised his eyebrows at me, and I simply shook my head in response. There was no way this man was getting any power over me if I could avoid it.
Caius, who had been losing patience, finally snapped. "Enough, brother. Marcus, what bonds do you see?"
Aro frowned but Marcus spoke before anyone could stop him. "No tighter coven have I met. These six are closer than family. But the two who were accused – are guiltless as they are but true mates. Their marks true upon their necks. As strong as mine with Didyme." His voiced trailed at the end.
Caius turned on the Cullens. "So, it was you four who tried to sabotage mates. Well, we could have been saved the trip to this god-forsaken continent if you had known better."
Aro held up his hand just as Caius was about to strike. "Enough. I think a few centuries of servitude may be a more appropriate punishment, don't you? Since they did not manage to separate mates."
I could tell that Caius did not like that statement but had expected it as he rolled his eyes and stood back, a sneer on his face as he looked down at the Cullens. The rest of the guard held no response, but I could see those beside me tense up.
"So, for the record, as I am new to this life. If someone attempts to break the law but fails, they are not deserving of punishment?" I spoke up, clear. Aro narrowed his eyes at me but stayed silent. "It is a serious question. I just want to understand. These are rules I must abide by as well and I should be aware of what the penalties and consequences are, am I not right?"
What Aro had not realized, was that while he was focused on me, I had attempted to push my shield out and around Chelsea, into her own bubble. I had only managed this a few times during practice and was not able to hold long. But even thirty seconds would be enough. Many of the guard had started to shake their heads and then turned to Aro, wanting to know how he would respond.
"Newborn, you do not know what you speak, and you speak out of turn. Because of your age, it will be overlooked – this time."
Peter, not being able to stay out of trouble added his two cents in. "So, you are admitting then that we can attempt any law breaking, but if we do not succeed, we are not subject to your death penalty. Well, that should solve many of your trials. Open up room for a holiday for you three in fact."
"I said no such thing." Aro spat back.
"You didn't need to. You implied. Because two of them have gifts you would like to collect, you will not subject them to the standard threat of death. You are but a conniving coward." Rose's vehemence surprised even me, as I raised an eyebrow at her.
Aro went to take a step towards Rose, but Emmett stepped in front, crouched to protect his mate. His frame towered over many in the field at nearly six and a half feet tall, and Aro paused in response.
Several of the guard were now frowning at Aro and I realized that they had managed to hear and think for themselves without a forced loyalty.
I laughed. Aro whipped towards me. "What is so funny, newborn?"
Waving my arms around at the group and then pointing to Chelsea at his back that he had not realized was frozen in air, stuck in my shield. "I think many of the group have just never had a chance to truly hear your thoughts on true justice."
A few of the guard tore their black cloaks and dropped them on the ground. A moment later, they were gone. Two large vampires, one large than Emmett with black hair and another black-haired vampire just less than Emmett in height rushed towards the Cullens and pulled their heads off. They threw them across the field as the bodies dropped to the ground.
