Muffled screams and the scraping of heels filled Maura's ears as she fought off her attacker. She turned her head to the side and away from the chloroform covered cloth - she recognized the smell right away - and bit her attacker's arm. She followed up with an elbow to the kidney. She barely had a lead on her attacker. Every step mattered. But her speed was hindered because of her heels and he grabbed her by the waist just when she was within arms reach of her phone. He threw her against the metal cart, pinned her there with his body, and covered her mouth and nose with the cloth a second time.

Maura thrashed wildly from side to side in an attempt to shake him off and wiggle loose but to no avail. The thrashing didn't shake him off but it meant there was enough room for her to thrust her hips back against his pelvis and elbow him several times in his other kidney. That was enough to get him to let go and stumble backwards. Unfortunately, he stood between her and her cellphone. Rather than try and get past him, Maura ran back out the way that she came in. She had a big enough lead that she was able to get back to her car. Her issue now was the very thing that had just saved her: adrenaline. Her hands were shaking, making it hard to get the key into the hole to start the car. The delay in getting the car started was enough for her attacker to catch up and pull her out of the car, throwing her on the ground hard enough that she hit her head. She felt a knee dig into her back before the cloth was placed over her mouth and nose for a third time.

"You're not getting away this time," her attacker growled.

And he was right. There was no way Maura could fight him off this time. She could only lay there helplessly as the chloroform rendered her unconscious.
