*Flurry Heart's Pov*
The sun now shone brightly over Canterlot, casting a warm glow as Flurry Heart walked down the castle hall toward the room where it all happened. The disturbing scene. Her aunt's chambers. Seeking comfort, she'd decided to change into her shining, silver, armor, a present from her father, Shining Armor, for one of her past birthdays. For a moment, she didn't think she'd ever need to wear it, but these weren't normal circumstances. As she approached he doors to her aunt's chambers, she took a deep breath, try as she may to calm her nerves. She knew what she was going to face inside, was going to be difficult, but there was no turning back now. Try as she might to bring a determined expression to her face, without letting her mind wander too much, she raised a hoof up to the door. With a deep breath, Flurry Heart pushed open the doors and stepped into the dimly lit chamber. The air was heavy with the weight of the recent tragedy, and Flurry Heart's heart ached at the sight before her. The room was in disarray, the remnants of a fierce struggle scattered across the floor. But amidst the chaos, Flurry's eyes fell upon a glimmer of light. Near where the bed used to be, sat a nightstand, atop the nightstand, were a few pieces of paper, and some neatly folded scrolls, and that's when she saw it. The rose necklace. The one her mother was supposed to give to her aunt.
Flurry Heart's breath hitched, her magic cradling the necklace's chain as it hovered before her, its rose pendant glowing an unnatural crimson. With each pulse of her racing heart, questions sprouted like thorny vines in her mind. Was the rose's color always this lurid shade? A breath later, she conceded—no, it smacked of something darker, a taint of sinister enchantments. Her horn's luminescence waned, relinquishing the curious trinket to the sanctity of its nightstand perch. Scrolls and ancient texts sprawled under her frantic scour, desperate for answers or a semblance of understanding. The sudden utterance of her name drowned the silence, jerking her gaze upward. Shining Armor loomed in the doorway, his visage etched with worry reflected in the mirror of her eyes. "Dad!" The word vaulted from her lips, and she launched into his waiting embrace. Stumbling backward, they found refuge in the expanse of the room. His hooves, pillars of solace, enclosed her, a familiar scent of home weaving into her senses as her mane cascaded around them both. Shrunken by his protective cloak, she peered up through lowered lashes, the glint of her silver armor breaking through the dim. "What are you doing here?" Her voice was almost a whisper. "Your mother's letter... It spoke volumes," Shining Armor murmured, his touch firm yet tender as eyes heavy with sorrow met hers. "What befell Twilight—it's spreading, to the crystal ponies."
In his gaze, she found echoes of her own dread, a silent accord shared in the wake of unspeakable darkness. As Flurry Heart absorbed her father's cryptic words, a shiver of foreboding crept through her veins like icy tendrils of a sinister spell. The mention of her aunt, at the mention of her people, the crystal ponies falling to a fate like her aunt, sent a surge of apprehension pulsing through the room. Just without warning, the chamber's atmosphere seemed to change, the air thickening with an unsettling presence. A sudden swirl of golden light heralded the arrival of a regal figure, her mane-like like the rays of the sun, as Princess Celestia stood in the doorway. ''Flurry, how informed are you about the crystal empire's past?'' Flurry Heart frowned, a little bit confused by her aunt's question, especially at a time like this. ''Not very, Auntie Celestia,'' she admitted. ''I know that it was a magical city, once ruled by a crystal princess, until an evil king named King Sombra came over and took it over. But that's about it. Why do you ask?''
Princess Celestia's eyes held a weighty significance as she advanced into the room, her presence commanding attention. "There is much more to the tale of the Crystal Empire, dear Flurry," she began, her voice carrying a grave solemnity. "It is a history twisted with deep secrets and a darkness that lingers still." Flurry Heart felt a chill run down her spine as her aunt's words hung heavy in the air, a sense of foreboding settling over the room like a thick mist. Princess Celestia's expression was inscrutable, her gaze piercing through the shadows of uncertainty that clouded Flurry's mind. "King Sombra's grasp on the Crystal Empire was born from a trace of ancient betrayal and a thirst for power that consumed him," Princess Celestia continued, her voice low and measured. "But, there is more to the story, a legacy of magic and shadows that stretches. As Flurry Heart absorbed her aunt's words, a shiver ran down her spine. The revelation of the dark transformation of King Sombra, once a kind and gentle pony known as Blazeheart, sent a chill through the room. The air suddenly felt heavy with the weight of the past, cloaked in shadows of mystery and intrigue. Princess Celestia's gaze held a deep sadness, a flicker of sorrow in her eyes as she recounted the tale of betrayal and corruption that befell the crystal empire. The once harmonious kingdom was now tainted by the malevolent rule of King Sombra, a shadow of his former self.
Flurry Heart could sense the darkness lurking behind the story, a sinister force that twisted hearts and shattered kingdoms. The thought of her father's namesake caught in the clutches of such malevolence filled her with a mixture of fear and curiosity. As the echoes of the past reverberated in the silence of the room, Flurry Heart realized that the tale of the crystal empire held more secrets than she had ever imagined. The mysteries of the past intertwined with the present, creating a tapestry of intrigue that beckoned her. ''The crystal empire wasn't just ruled by a princess, the castle was ruled by a king and a queen.'' Flurry Heart's eyes widened in surprise, as she listened to her aunt's words. She had never heard about a kind and queen ruling over the crystal empire, she'd only heard the story about the crystal princess. ''So, there were two rulers of the crystal empire?'' she asked, voice full of curiosity. Princess Celestia nodded as she went on. ''Yes, Flurry,'' she replied. ''The crystal empire was ruled by a king and queen, just like any other kingdom in Equestria, normally. However, when King Sombra took over, he banished the queen, Queen Amore, and forced the king, Shining Armor to flee for his life.''
''Dad?''
Flurry Heart's blue eyes widened even further as she heard her aunt mention her father's name. ''I don't understand? Are you saying that my dad was the king of the crystal empire? How does that make any sense?'' she asked, her voice filled with disbelief and confusion. ''No, you're getting way headed of yourself, Flurry. The king and your father just share the same name. Queen Amore was banished from the empire, and her husband, Shining Armor, was forced to flee for his life, leaving the crystal empire in the hands of the evil king. But the king Sombra we know, wasn't always an evil king. He used to be a kind pony, named Blazeheart. He lived in Ponyville, before Ponyville was founded. He was mastered in unicorn magic''. "But how could that happen?" she asked, her voice trembling. "How could some-pony be as kind and gentle as you say become an evil king?" Princess Celestia sighed, her expression turning grave. "It's a long and complicated story, Flurry Heart," she said. "But the short version is that Blazeheart was corrupted by a powerful dark magic, turning him into the evil king we know as Sombra. He used his magic to take over the Crystal Empire and rule it with an iron fist,''
''But before he would enact his wrath upon the kingdom, he kidnapped the pony in the town who he had feelings for, and brought her to the kingdom with him. A lovely, gentle, spirited pony, named Whispering Rose. She and Blazeheart had feelings for one another, and vowed to be together. However, once she realized what he had become, she vowed to never look at him the same again. She tried to escape from him, Flurry. But before she could, he used his new dark powers to turn her into something, something that would never run away from him again.'' Flurry Heart's heart skipped a beat as she listened to her aunt's words. She couldn't imagine the pain and fear that Whispering Rose must have felt, knowing that the pony she loved had turned into an evil king. "What happened to Whispering Rose?" she asked, her voice trembling. "Did she ever break free from the dark magic?" Princess Celestia shook her head, eyes full of sorrow. ''I'm afraid not, Flurry. Whispering Rose had been put under a powerful spell that separated her spirit from her body. What he did with her spirit, I'm not quite sure, as that part seems to be lost from history. However, it appears as though I know now what happened to her body.'' ''What do you mean?'' Flurry asked, voice shaken, as she prayed what came out of her mouth next, wasn't connected to the creature who'd attacked the three filly's earlier. Princess Celestia took a deep breath before continuing. "Whispering Rose's body was transformed into a creature of the night, she became what's known as a somberrose. A somberrose was a rose that is capable of surviving the seasons by falling into a somber sleep, because of its magic it is able to stay alive through even the harshest of winters. However, it seems the plant has mutated when it was exposed to King Sombra's dark magic. I fear it's attached itself to Whispering Rose's corpse, and now seeks revenge upon those who wronged her.''
''I-wow, this is overwhelming,'' Flurry Heart exclaimed, placing a hoof on her forehead as she sank into a seated position in front of her aunt. Celestia maintained a solemn expression, never breaking eye contact with her niece, her mind racing with thoughts. The somberrose must have mutated, producing more, leading to what happened to Twilight. A surge of determination and strength coursed through the young princess. Flurry Heart rose to her feet, resilience shining in her eyes as she declared, ''We have to travel to the Ever-free Forest and eliminate Whispering Rose's remains. We need to burn that plant before it spreads any further.'' Princess Celestia nodded in agreement. "What do you think, Dad?" Flurry inquired, intending to lock eyes with her father. However, the moment was fleeting as a gut-wrenching scream pierced the air. ''I left Mom in the throne room, he must have gone to her side!'' Flurry shouted as she locked eyes with her aunt. "Stay here, Flurry Heart," Princess Celestia said, her expression solemn. "I'll go investigate." "No way!" Flurry Heart objected as the two ponies hurried down the hall towards the throne room.
