Also, it would not let me put in the full name of this chapter, so I just called it Chapter 9. The chapter's name is "The Green Ninja and the Phone Incident".
Friday
Two days later, Lloyd was sitting in math class. Yesterday had passed uneventfully, and Lloyd was looking forward to tomorrow when he would be able to train all day.
All of a sudden the alarm went off, signaling either an oni invasion or a hybrid invasion. Lloyd could barely contain his excitement. Finally, he would be able to defend Ninjago City! As all of the students streamed out of the classroom, Lloyd silently slipped away. In a hallway, he looked up and down it, and seeing no one, he spun into spinjitzu. When he came out of it, he was wearing his green gi. He was now the Green Ninja. Now I have to figure out where the invasion is, Lloyd thought. He quickly exited the school from the back, being careful to remain in shadows and out of sight of security cameras. Luckily, he was used to sneaking around like this. He had had to do it quite often in the Outcast.
After he had left the school behind, he climbed a drainage pipe onto the roof of a small apartment. From there, he started jumping from roof to roof, looking for the oni or hybrids that were attacking the city. After a few minutes, he saw up ahead blasts of destruction power. He knew that oni only used that power. Well, and his dad, but he was pretty sure that his father wasn't attacking the city. He headed in the direction of the blasts. When he got there, he saw that the city's wall had been partially destroyed in one place. He also noticed that this was the side of the city that was near the Outcast. Looking across, he saw the plain of grass and the treeline. Somewhere beyond that lay the Outcast.
He looked down, and saw an oni blasting apart a restaurant. The Ninjago City army was nowhere to be seen. Lloyd, seeing his first target, jumped down onto a street light, swinging around it, and then launched himself onto the oni, pulling out his sword. The oni screeched in rage, clearly having not expected him, and tried to thrust him off. Lloyd leaped off it's back, and then blasted it with his green power. The oni yelped in shock, but then tried blasting him with it's own power. Lloyd somersaulted out of the way. The oni then created a staff with it's power, and charged at him. Lloyd wasn't sure how it had managed to do that if it's power was destruction, not creation, but he didn't have time to ponder it at the moment. Lloyd swung his sword, catching the oni's staff. The oni grinned evilly, and Lloyd tried to figure out what in the world it was laughing about. The oni then infused its power into the staff, and Lloyd's eyes widened in shock. The oni blasted the infused power into Lloyd's sword, and Lloyd was blasted a few yards back, his sword flying out of his hand. Lloyd groaned in pain, but he wasn't going to give up now, not on his first fight. He quickly stood up, using his power to blast the advancing oni into a wall. Then he hurriedly retrieved his sword. The oni pulled itself up with its staff, and then hissed at him. It charged at him in blind rage. Lloyd quickly spun into spinjitzu, and blasted it back into the same wall. Lloyd waited for the oni to get up, but it didn't, and so Lloyd assumed that he had won. He turned, spotting another oni. He smiled, enjoying the oni's surprised look as he blasted it with his power.
Eventually the army showed up, but they were too late to do anything. Lloyd had just finished off the last of the oni. The soldiers stood there in surprise, staring at Lloyd and then at the oni laying around. The head of the army walked up to Lloyd, and Lloyd debated if he should run. He decided against it though, staying put. He wanted to know what the man would say.
"Who are you?" he asked.
"You may call me the Green Ninja," Lloyd replied, and then he left, disappearing into an alleyway. He climbed another drainage pipe onto a building, and looked down at the men. They were all talking with one another, discussing what had happened. They all looked very confused. Lloyd left, heading for the school. He hoped that he had not been missed, and that he wouldn't be late back. When he arrived, he spun into spinjitzu, changing back into his normal clothes, and then slipped inside. He headed for the gymnasium, where he knew everyone would be. Thankfully, they were all still there. Lloyd slipped in quietly among them.
"Hey, Lloyd, where have you been?!" Kai asked, trotting up to him and looking worried.
"Um, here," Lloyd replied, trying sound casual.
"Huh. Well, guess I just didn't see you." Kai shrugged, appearing nonchalant, but he looked at Lloyd with slightly narrowed eyes.
Later that day, at lunch, everyone was on their… glowing box-like things. Lloyd still had no clue what they were. Jay sat next to him, and Cole sat on the other side of Jay. Kai sat in front of Lloyd, next to Nya, and Zane sat on the other side of Nya. Lloyd was peering over Jay's shoulder at the glowing thing. It actually sort of resembled a game boy.
"Hey guys, look at this!" Jay suddenly exclaimed, sounding excited. Lloyd, looking at Jay's phone, started in shock. It was a picture of him. Well, the Green Ninja. It showed a blurry picture of himself running into the alleyway after he had defeated the oni.
"Yeah, the mysterious ninja thing?" Kai asked. "We already know. It's all over the news!"
"Yup," Nya agreed. "It says that the mysterious ninja defeated the oni all by himself. Pretty impressive, if you ask me."
Lloyd tried hard not to show his pride at that. Getting praise from Nya was rare, and if she did applaud you, then she meant it.
"It says that he called himself 'the Green Ninja'," Zane stated, looking at his own glow thing.
"Interesting. Wonder who he is?" Nya said.
"Yeah. I wish I could do that," Cole said sourly.
"I believe a lot of people wish that they could help with the oni attacks," Zane told him.
Jay looked up at Lloyd suddenly, seeming to study him. Lloyd looked back, unsure why he was staring at him. In mild panic, he wondered if Jay had realized that the Green Ninja was him.
"You don't have a phone, do you?" Jay said. It sounded more like a statement.
Lloyd blinked, having not expected that, but then relaxed, realizing that his secret was still safe. Then curiosity took over. "What's a 'phone'?"
They all stared at him.
After a few minutes of awkward silence, Kai said, "You don't know what a phone is?"
"No," Lloyd replied.
They all gaped at him in shock, except for Zane, who just tilted his head slightly, looking curious.
"Okay, I guess I can sort of understand you not knowing what some things are," Well, maybe, Kai mentally thought, "but you not knowing what a phone is?! Seriously?!"
Lloyd blinked, taken slightly aback. They had responded well to his former naivety about things, so why not now?
"Okaaay," Jay said, looking at him strangely. "Something is definitely off about you."
"Um," was all Lloyd could think of in reply. He suddenly felt very nervous. What if they found out that he was a half breed? What if they didn't want to be friends anymore? What if they found out he was a half breed, and then wanted him executed? Lloyd put his hands in his sweater pockets, feeling them getting sweaty from his internal panic.
Just then, the bell rang. Lloyd silently sighed in relief, happy to get out of the interrogation. He quickly got up, saying a quick goodbye, and then rushed off to class. Kai, Jay, Zane, Cole, and Nya were left staring after him in confusion.
"Well, that was weird," Kai said, sitting back with his arms crossed.
"I totally agree," Cole said. "Something is definitely off about that guy."
"Yeah, I mean, not knowing what a phone is? Phones are like, the most popular thing!" Jay said almost hysterically, throwing his arms in the air.
Zane was still staring at the place where Lloyd had vanished from their sight, looking thoughtful.
"Hey Zane," Cole said, getting his attention.
Zane looked at him.
"That guy is seeming more and more like you by the day."
Zane nodded in agreement. "As I said before, he is definitely hiding something."
"So, he doesn't know what most things are, and he seems pretty skittish." Kai placed a hand on his chin, then shrugged. "Maybe he's got amnesia like Zane? That's why Zane hadn't known about, like, anything."
They all nodded thoughtfully.
"He did look kinda panicked when I said something was off about him," Jay stated. "Maybe he doesn't want anyone to know about his amnesia?"
"We should not go assuming that he has amnesia," Zane told them sternly. "We must first find proof."
"You're right, like always," Cole agreed.
"What, so we just go up to him and ask him if he has amnesia?" Kai asked, looking doubtful.
"No. That would be ill advised," Zane replied. "If he doesn't want us to know, than we shouldn't pry. It is none of our business."
"Zane's right," Nya agreed. "We should just ignore it, and continue explaining things to him. He'll come around."
"Yeah, and when he's ready, he'll tell us what's up," Cole finished.
"Okay, that's great and all, but why are we the only ones in the cafeteria?!" Kai asked.
Everyone gulped nervously, then quickly jumped out of their chairs and raced off to class. Kai accidentally knocked his over. Zane stayed behind to push all of the chairs in and stand Kai's up, and then followed them, sighing in exasperation.
After school, Lloyd walked home to the monastery. He was still confused about earlier. He didn't understand his friends' reaction. What was a phone? And why were they so surprised that he didn't know what it was? And now, they were getting suspicious of him. He glumly realized that he should have listened to Wu and his parents about not making friends. Lloyd had been supposed to keep his distance, but no, he had gone and made friends, and now he feared that they were on to him. But, Lloyd wanted to keep his friends. After thinking for a few minutes, he realized that they had been suspicious because he didn't know about most common things. So what if I pretend that I know what things are? Then they'll have no reason to suspect me, and we can all still be friends! It was the perfect plan, but Lloyd knew that it wasn't foolproof. He had to make it convincing.
He sighed. He had never realized that going to school would cause so many problems.
When he arrived home, he immediately told his parents and Wu about the oni attack.
"Are you alright? Were you hurt?" Misako instantly demanded, looking him over frantically.
"No, no! I'm fine!" Lloyd backed away from her, his hands up, trying to calm her down.
"Did you win?" Garmadon asked.
Lloyd grinned, nodding. "Yup! They didn't stand a chance. Never saw me coming!"
Garmadon smiled approvingly.
"Don't grow too confident, Lloyd," Wu advised. "You had the element of surprise on your side. Next time, they will be expecting you."
Lloyd nodded. "I know, which is why I need to train."
"Well, you train with Wu. I'm bringing Garmadon back inside. He shouldn't be walking around," Misako said.
Garmadon grumbled something inaudibly.
Misako turned to him, looking annoyed. "What was that?"
"Nothing, nothing," Garmadon said. He quickly limped back inside to avoid Misako's wrath. Misako frowned, but followed him in.
Wu then turned to Lloyd. "We best get on with it, then, hmm?"
Lloyd nodded eagerly.
