Oh and Disclaimer, I do not own Pokemon.
The sun slowly rose as the morning started. It was cool from the night before but quickly warmed as the sun's heat reached over the land. The sunlight touched the small town of Pallet coating it in its warm glow. Already out on the roads was a certain raven-haired fifteen-year-old boy, yawning from the sleep he was forced to cut short.
Ash Ketchum was going to the Oak Trainer School today. When someone reached the age of fifteen, and they got a high enough grade on the trainer aptitude test, they would go to a trainer school. If they were able to pass it they would be certified as trainers and sent out to the world.
Ash had always wanted to be a Pokemon trainer and spent his life studying. However, when he took the test he found that it was on much more advanced stuff than he had been studying. Luckily he knew enough to just pass. Though he found out his rival, Gary passed with a perfect score.
"Oh good, the shuttle hasn't come yet," He heard. He looked to see his mother, Delia.
"Oh, hey mom... Yeah, it's running late I think." He responded.
"I made you some snacks for later." She handed him a small box. "I can't believe your off to learn to be a trainer."
"Heh, yeah. I can't wait. I hear we get a Pokemon to bond with when we get there."
She giggled. "Got your priorities set I see. Well dear, remember you need a place to stay first. I gave you enough money for one year in most of the places that house students there." She wished he could have stayed at the dorms but she found out only anyone who got a certain grade on the test could stay at them.
"I got it, mom. Thanks for helping with a place to stay. I can handle everything else." He said remembering all the money he saved in preparation for this day.
She hugged him. "Just be careful dear. You know I worry."
The shuttle drove up shortly after. He bid his mother goodbye and got on it. He saw Gary was already sitting in the back surrounded by others from the Pallet and Veridian City. He saw one seat with a girl sitting in it looking out the window. He decided to see if he could sit with her. He wanted someone to talk with who wasn't Gary or one of his fans.
"Hey mind if I sit here?"
She turned her head over to him. "Sure! I don't mind." She responded as she fixed the bangs on her short brown hair.
He sat down next to her as she looked back out the window. His outfit was an interesting choice. Most picked to wear travel and battle-worthy garments to prep for being a trainer. Yet she has on a pink tight tank top with a slightly see-through shirt and a skirt going down to her knee caps. The outfit was not really good for travel. Perhaps she was with the performance treck.
"So, I'm Ash Ketchum."
She turned back to him with a smile. "Nice to meet you. Kari Kamiya."
"So what treck are you entering?"
"Training. I want to travel the world and meet lots of Pokemon."
"Oh! Really? Your outfit made me think performance."
She laughed at him. "I know, but I have a friend that's a designer. She made this for battle and travel. Trust me it can take a flamethrower like the others."
"Wow, I'm impressed."
She nodded. "Are you in the trainer also?"
"Yeah! I want to become a Pokemon Master!"
"A pretty lofty goal you know."
"I know. But I am ready for it."
She giggled lightly. "Well, you certainly have the confidence."
"So where you from?" He asked. "I have never seen you here."
"Veridian. I live with my brother and his Fiancee."
"I see. How was the test for you?"
She let out an angry sigh. "Terrible. Turns out they had a large update to the test and most everything I studied was outdated. I only found out a week before the test."
Ash had a ting of anger. "That explains a lot..."
She looked shocked. "You didn't know?"
He shook his head. "They did not tell me a thing."
"Well, you at least passed."
The two talked for the entire rest of the trip. It was not very long though as the small city was just an hour out. This was Crimson city, a relatively new city that popped up around the Oak Trainer School. At first, it was just a school with a few apartments and places to shop at. However, it blew up fast and now it was a small city with even a neighborhood close by.
The bus pulled up next to the trainer school. Its doors opened and everyone unloaded and formed up before one of the teachers. It was a long raven-haired girl wearing a pink Yukata. She walked up before them.
"Good morning everyone. I am Valerie, a gym leader from Laverre city." She addressed everyone. "Now, before orientation, you are all being given time to find a place to stay. Consider this a test for after you get your training license. It does not matter what treck you join as you will have to travel to perfect your craft. Therefore, we must know you can handle living on your own."
"Unless your smart enough to get into the dorms," Ash muttered. To his shock, it seemed she heard him but she gave him a look like she agreed with his thoughts of how dumb it was.
"The Places to live are decently priced enough for students only." she pointed out a bunch of cards. "Please take your student ID and get a place to stay at. Then come back to meet me here."
Ash walked up and located his ID. He saw a few had keys with them, perhaps for the ones who got to stay in the dorms. This was immediately confirmed when Gary took him and walked over to the dorms with his key. He noticed a few pamphlets for local apartments and houses for rent, he quickly grabbed a few and started hunting.
It did not take long to find one he liked. it was a nice-looking apartment complex that was close to the school with a but that went too and from the school just for trainer students. It also had a few amenities such as a gym, pool, and a small store. He noticed it had a three-tier service system with extra benefits to staying. Bronze had all he needed and would be a good price for him not leaving his mother broke. He walked over to the phone and made the call.
"Hello! This is the New Bud Apartment complex! How can I help you?" the voice said.
"Hi, my name is Ash. I want to know if you have any openings." Ash said.
"Oh sorry, we just had the last one taken."
"Oh, well that's alright, back to looking."
He was about to hand up when the voice called out again. "Wait! Give me a moment."
"Ummm okay?"
Ash heard the phone go on hold and the generic music started to play. He looked into the other places seeing that the others were much higher priced. his mom's money would cover it but he really just wanted to be able to give some back. He did not know how long he had been on hold when the music halted and the voice came back. She sounded a little happier now for some reason.
"So, I talked to one of the rooms. One of the girls staying there got cut off from her money. They are willing to let you stay with them if you cover hers until she can get a job."
"What's the catch?" He asked feeling like there is one.
"Well, it's a three-room apartment. You will pretty much stay in the living room. BUT! I am willing to bump you up to gold for free if you pay for her silver tier."
He did read up one gold. It got him a free bus pass, meaning he would not have to pay a fair. it also meant unlimited anytime access to the gym, pool, and other amenities. He would also get a discount when using the store there. The icing on that cake was a priority for the spa for both him and his partnered Pokemon.
"Why are you offering me this?"
She sighed. "I was friends with one of thems mother and I see the girls like little sisters. Please, I know the living room futon is not the most ideal but they need this."
He sighed, twist his arm why don't you?
"Alright, I will do it."
"Grand! Come over right away and ask for Rita."
The idea of having to sleep on a futon in the living room was not appealing. But only paying a third, and maybe a fourth later on, and having gold membership pretty much sold him. He went to the bus stop and waited for one. While waiting, other students gathered to wait also. One was a dark-skinned girl with rather large hair.
"Hey! Any idea when the bus comes by?" The rather large-haired girl asked.
"Ahhh I think the next one is due in about five minutes." He responded.
"Alright! Sounds good!" she stood next to him. "My name is Iris by the way! The next Dragon Master!"
"You're looking to be a Dragon Master?" That explained her rather interesting outfit. A beige training top with white tights. He saw it in a documentary about a village where Dragon trainers wore it.
"Yep! I come from a dragon village and came all the way here to get my license and become a Dragon Master! What about you?"
"I want to be a Pokemon Master!" He responded.
"That's a pretty tough goal. If I recall there are only five Masters right now?"
It was a pretty lofty goal to be a Pokemon Master. To become one it required you to win five Leagues and beat their Eliet Fours and Champions. This was very hard to do to the point only five have been able to pull this feat off.
"Well, I am confident I can be the sixth!" Ash responded with confidence.
"Heh, you sound like such a kid. Still, that kind of confidence might be just what you need to pull it off."
The bus pulled up not long after. He got on and talked to her the entire trip, this was not long as his stop came up pretty fast. After bidding her fair well he got off and walked up the very nice looking building. He took a deep breath and pushed open the door.
He walked in and was greeted with an Alola styled interior. He was able to see the shop off to the side and was impressed with what he could see that was for sale. On the wall there was a bored with Photos all over it, there was a woman with blond hair and deep green eyes on all of them. He guessed she was the owner. One had a woman with short green hair on it. the next had her with three girls around her, a blond, a greenet, and a Bluenet.
"Can I help you?"
He looked to see the woman from the photos.
"Oh, hey! I'm Ash? I need to see Rita?"
She smiled at him. "You're looking at her! So glad you agreed to this. The girls want to talk to you first though."
"I can understand that." He said.
"Come with me." She said as she stepped around the counter and lead him to the elevator. "I got one big rule for you by the way, if they let you stay, no funny business. I will be the end of you."
He gulped and nodded as they got on the elevator. After riding up to the top floor, interestingly, he got off to a nice-looking hall. The carpet was nice and clean, the halls were spacious, and there were a few vending machines and some public bathrooms. They came to a door to the apartment he might have. She knocked loudly.
"He is here girls!"
There was a slight shuffle before the door opened to what looked to be the bluenett from their photo, just older.
"Come in! Come in! So glad you came! We are ready for you." She said letting them in.
He walked into the living room. It was mostly bland, he guessed they didn't decorate it any. The futon was folded into a couch, there was a recliner next to it, and a TV hooked up with a Switch. It was rather pleasant and had a nice view of the city on the balcony. He noticed the kitchen was connected and there was a hallway leading to what he guessed was their rooms and the bathroom.
"Girls! They are here!" She yelled out. "My name is Lana. My friends, Mallow and Lillie, are changing right now."
"I see." He responded.
He did not have to wait very long for them to walk out. The Blond from before came out first. She was also older, of course, however, she had on what looked almost like a lab coat on. Most likely on the research treck then. The other was the greenet, now sporting a chef's coat. He knew there was a Miscellaneous treck for people who wanted to do things with Pokemon that did not fit the other trecks. He noted Lana had on a blue outfit that seemed more like something you would wear out to sea, perhaps looking to be a sailor or a Water Master?
"I am Mallow," the greenet said. "This is Lilie. We are guessing you have been told of our situation?"
Ash nodded. "Yeah, your friend got cut off and you need me to cover for her till she gets a job."
Lillie nodded. "I have heard it won't be easy for me though. So it might be a while."
"I understand." He responded.
"But we want to ask you a few things first. We don't want a creep after all." Lana said.
"I guess that makes sense." He responded.
They all took a seat and Mallow went first.
"So what do you want to be? What is your goal?"
"I want to become a Pokemon Master!"
She looked surprised. "Pretty large goal. Why a full-blown master?"
"I have a rival who thinks he can become one also. But his way feels wrong to me. I want to prove him wrong."
Mallow nodded looking satisfied with his answer for now. Lana was next.
"This living room is where you will sleep. Please note you won't have a room if you agree to this. Our rooms are off-limits but will still need to use the living room due to the kitchen and the Switch, something we will all share, being connected to it. I know this is very unfair for you so if this is something you can't live with, tell us."
He shrugged. "I understand and am okay with that. I am getting a lot of other good stuff for agreeing to this." Rita nodded. "But I do feel at some point I should be allowed full privacy. Maybe late at night?"
The girls talked for a little among one another before Lana responded. "We believe that's fair. At ten we will treat it as your room till six. We will have to knock or let you know we are coming in if we absolutely must and wait for a response."
Ash nodded. "That works."
Lilie was last. "Ash, I want you to understand I will be looking hard for a job but I have been told it will be very hard. A lot of others are also getting jobs around here and I have no work experience. You might be paying for me for a while. Are you alright with this?"
"Yes, I understand."
They all smile and nodded at Rita.
"Good to see," Rita said as she stood up and gave him a key. "No worries about the paperwork I will cover it. Just give me first month's rent."
Ash gave her the money and shook her hand.
"So what are you three here for?"
Lana went first. "I am here to become a Water Master!" She said happily. "I have lived by the sea all my life and have befriended many water Pokemon so I am sure I will do it!"
"You certainly sound sure of yourself." He admired her confidence.
"I am! I will oust even that pompous jerk, Seibold!"
Ash was hoping she could do that. While there could be multiple Pokemon Masters there could only be one type master, currently, it was Seibold. There was no doubt he was a very good trainer and deserving of the title of "Water Master". But he was also a bit of an egotistic jerk. He once got angry and challenged a trainer who said Pokemon battles weren't art.
"I am going to open a restaurant for people and Pokemon." Mallow Chimed in. "I want to have it run by both also!"
"Huh, That sounds like a good idea. I have seen restaurants with Pokemon working in them but it's always been for Pokemon or humans never both."
"I will be changing that. I already know how to cook with the best of them and I use traditional Alolan techniques." He swore she had a fire in her eyes.
"Well, I can't wait to try some someday. If that's okay."
"Ummm, I want to be a researcher," Lillie said softly.
"Oh, that's a pretty good dream."
"My mother disagrees... Also, I have a fear of touching Pokemon." She responded with a sad look.
Ash did not really know how to respond. "Well, I guess this is the best place to overcome it."
She just looked down not saying another word. Lana decided to break the silence.
"So anyway! What time is it? Oh, look! We need to get ready for the bus!"
They looked up and it was getting close to being time to go. They gave Ash privacy to change into the clothes he wanted to wear. His mom had got him a pretty standard outfit, jeans, a black shirt, and sneakers. But there was a surprise, a blue vest she made herself. His mother always liked to make something to go along with his outfit, something he was always glad to take.
He and the girls headed out but he was stopped.
"Pardon! Can you help me please?"
He looked over to see a violet hair person in a very nice white button-up shirt and purple pants. For a moment he could not really tell their gender as they looked like they could be a pretty boy or a girl, but her chest revealed her gender. She looked a bit frazzled and stressed at the moment. He guessed she was in the school also and something was holding her up.
"Listen, my friend is stuck in her room. The door got jammed, can you help get it open?" She requested.
"That's odd," said Lana. "Ash, can you help them out? We will have the bus driver wait."
Ash nodded. "Sure!"
As they walked off he heard Mallow bring up letting Rita know about the door. He followed the girl to a two-person room. He walked in seeing it was already a bit of a mess, she presented herself in a very organized manner, her hair was styled well, her shirt had no wrinkles on it at all, and her pants looked to be pressed. He felt this was her roommates doing.
"My friend's door got jammed, she has been trying to get it open for a few minutes."
He nodded and walked up to the door hearing someone yelling profanities as they beat the door.
"I got someone, Angie!"
"About time! We are going to be late!" she yelled out.
"Alright me and, ah who are you?" Ash asked.
"Annabel."
"Okay, I and Annabel are going to pull on the count of three." He said as the two grabbed the knob. He couldn't help but note her soft hands. "You push hard as you can. Ready?"
"Yeah! Hurry!"
"One, two, THREE!"
The two started pulling hard. With the three of them combined the door burst open. They were thrown back as someone landed on top of Ash. He looked up to see this girl Angie. Much Like Annabel, she could pass for a pretty boy also, however unlike Annabel's elegant hairstyle and outfit she was pretty messy. Her hair was messy and not really styled and her outfit was just a basic pair of green pants and a light green shirt. She also had a breeder's apron on, must be in the care treck.
She blushed and pushed herself up. "Thank you... I guess I owe you." She said as she grabbed something to write with and some paper.
"Oh it's nothing really just glad I could-," He did not finish as she handed him the paper with her phone number on it.
"Just call me if you need anything!" She headed out.
"She is a bit..." He couldn't pick out the words.
Annabel chuckled. "Don't worry, she's really nice. She just likes to, repay her debts, per say. But thanks, really."
The two of them started down to the bus. Lucky for them his roommates made the bus wait for them and they were able to bord. He and Annabel sat together seeing that the rest were already seated together. It was going to take a bit to make it back to the school so Ash decided to start a conversation.
"So, you're in the trainer treck?"
She nodded. "Yeah, I got in off a recommendation."
He looked surprised to hear this. "A recommendation? Why aren't you in the dorms?"
She sighed. "I don't want special treatment."
He looked down wishing the rest were like her.
"You are upset, someone you are angry with?"
He looked at her wide-eyed. "How did you-?"
"I am telepathic. I picked up on your feelings. Don't worry, I did not read your mind. Just your emotions."
"Huh, interesting. Yeah, Gary. We used to be friends but we had a difference in ideas."
She looked at him. "What kind?"
"Well, it is just our philosophy on how to become a Pokemon Master." He responded.
She turned to look outside. "I know the feeling. I had a friend, Sabrina, who felt her training needed to be super strict. I haven't spoken to her since she went into her training."
"I see. I'm sorry to hear that."
She shook her head. "I just hope she is alright."
The two chatted more until the bus came back to the school. Everyone who managed to get a place to stay had already made it back and were waiting for the instructor. Ash stood up and stepped off quickly, he could not wait for what was to come next. However just as he got off and stepped away from the bus, someone crashed full speed into him.
"I'm so late!" He heard before someone crashed into him.
He opened his eyes and found his face sandwiched between two soft orange lumps. After a bit, the person got off him and seemed to try and reorientate herself. It was a blond-haired girl wearing an orange blouse and a white skirt. He noticed she also had a white coat on but this one looked almost official.
"I am so sorry! I was running late, and I missed my bus so I just ran here without looking!" she rambled. "Are you alright?
"Y-yeah." He said picking himself up and holding out his hand. "Are you alright?"
She nodded and takes his hand and got herself up. "I'm so sorry. I was able to get in thanks to Junipher so I panicked when I saw I was running late." She said.
"Hey, I get it. You were running late and you panicked. We can start over and ill pretend you didn't crash into me." He said blushing at where his head was. "I'm Ash Ketchum, you?"
She smiled. "Bianca, I was selected by Professor Junipher to take the researcher treck."
"I'm here for the trainer."
"I see. Hey, we don't have a lot of time so how about after we go out to eat? My treat for running you down." He cut him off before he could answer. "I won't take no for an answer!"
"Ummm okay then?" He said nervously.
"Alright! See you after!" She said as she ran in with everyone else.
He walked up to one of the guides. He was sent out to the Pokemon enclosure where everyone else in the trainer and performer treck was waiting. He found out that the research and care trecks were given eggs to raise and the miscellaneous was interviewed and pared up with one. To his disgust honor student were allowed to pick from a lineup of well-trained and well-bred Pokemon.
"Hello everyone," Valerie said as she walked out. "I hope you are ready to get your first Pokemon!"
She walked over and showed a table with Blue Pokeballs that had the school's crest on them.
"What kind of Pokeballs are they?" Asked a red-haired girl.
"I am glad you asked. This is the weakest Pokeball in the world. If a Pokemon has no desire to be caught they will bust out instantly."
A raven-haired boy with dark skin looked confused. "Why would you have that?"
"Simply put, you all must find a Pokemon, but the Pokemon must choose you as its trainer. If the Pokemon does not wish to join you it will pop out instantly. Otherwise, it will stay in and it will be your partner the entire time you remain in school. They will also stay with you after you graduate."
Everyone started talking about what Pokemon they wanted. The raven-haired boy looked really thrilled.
"Do you have a Mew? I would like that one!"
Everyone stared at him and started laughing. The girl who was with him facepalmed hard at this. Valerie let out a very long sigh, perhaps this was not the first time this request was made. Ash resisted laughing as he couldn't blame him for asking.
"You will find no Legendary or Mythical Pokemon here." She answered. "Now go out and find your partner."
Everyone went out.
Meanwhile, a young Zeraora was running around the forest close by. It had very recently left the place it had called home and was trying to find a new place away from where it had hatched. It had been protected by the Pokemon that lived in the area all its life and only was taught by them how to defend itself so it needed a fairly safe place to call home for the moment. As it swiftly ran through the forest it came upon a strange metal construct. It looked pretty strong and on the other side, he saw some pretty happy and healthy-looking Pokemon. Perhaps this could be its home?
In a flash of lightning, it went to the other side. The Pokemon on that side fleed from it perhaps due to the lightning strike. He started walking around the area looking around. It looked pretty safe, the few Pokemon still out were pretty non-hostle and he could tell they were about as weak as he was. Still, he was unsure if this was the path he wanted.
He was told by the Pokemon in the area that he had to stay wild and protect the area he settled on. However, this felt pretty restrictive to him. He wanted to see the world honestly and figured the best way to do this would be to join a human. However, he was told by the Pokemon that this was not for him to do. He would be used for very selfish reasons. Still, he never met a human, was just told about them.
As he walked around the strange new lands his stomach started to growl. It had been a while since he had food and was now starving. He started looking for berry trees first, this did not go well. It would appear there were no berries on any of the trees right now. He started sniffing the air hoping to pick up the scent of something. It did finally pick up on something, he followed his nose to it.
Ash sighed as he sat under a tree. Not one Pokemon wanted to join with him for whatever reason. He almost was able to get a Pikachu to come with him, but it ran off after a girl who passed by. He heard that if no Pokemon would join you you got kicked out of the school. He was not sure if it was true or not but there was a good chance it was.
He took out the meal his mother made for him. He opened it to a meal of rice balls and a sandwich cut in two. He took a bite from it and looked out at the fields. So many Pokemon could be seen and not one wanted to be his partner. As he took another bite he heard something moving close by. He looked to see an odd bipedal Pokemon watching him.
"Hey, there are you hungry? I don't mind sharing."
Zeraora stared at him for a bit. This must have been one of the "Humans" he was told about. he heard many stories about them being cruel and just taking any Pokemon they pleased. However, this one seemed very nice. The food also smelled very good, what could the harm be?
He slowly and carefully walked over to him. The smell got stronger and was just amazing to his nose. He got to him and quickly grabbed the strange food out of his hand before backing up a bit just in case. He gave it another sniff before he took a bit out of it. It was amazing.
"Heh, I know we aren't really supposed to be giving human food to Pokemon but, why not? Pretty sure I will be kicked out anyway."
The two of them started eating together.
"You must love it here. I haven't been here long but I can see it has everything a Pokemon could want." He sighed and looked down at the rice balls. "I really wanted to become a Pokemon trainer. Me and this guy, Gary, we used to be good friends. But one day told me that he found out the secret to being a Pokemon Master. You needed to make sure you only got the best there was."
Zeraora stopped and looked over at him. This fell in line with what the Pokemon of his forest told him. There were a few that would have loved to be with humans but kept being ignored due to being too weak. At best one would be attacked to make his Pokemon stronger. Perhaps they were right about humans after all?
"But I just could not believe that. I mean, my dad, he had this Caterpie. Was very weak, lost many fights, was also a bit of a coward. But he wanted to be with my dad so he took him. Know what? It grew to be really strong!"
Zeraora stared at him, could this story be true?
"I wanted to show him strong Pokemon are fine, but any Pokemon can be strong! The bond is what matters more! Sadly, no Pokemon wants to join me." He sighed and stood up. "Well, I should get going. Hope you get a good trainer soon!"
He started to walk off. Zeraora looked down at the ground. This trainer was nothing like the humans the Pokemon told him of. He seemed very nice and had views he agreed with. He decided he wanted to know more about him. He gobbled down the rest of the food and ran up to him.
"Huh? Hey, what's up?"
He pointed at him and looked at him expectingly.
"You want to come with me?" He asked the yellow Pokemon. It nodded. "Okay then... I will have to catch you with a Pokeball. Are you okay with this?
Once again he nodded. Ash pulled out his Pokeball and threw it at the strange Pokemon. The Pokemon vanished in the Pokeball. It did not shake any and the light instantly went out. He smiled and picked up the Pokeball ready to start his classes.
