"For now we've done as much as we can to contain known threats." Xander said at the next meeting. "But my counterpart's memories still show other potential issues. Ghosts that will show up during the run up to the Sadie Hawkins Day - ."
"Just consider yourself invited and don't expect anything more." Cordelia told him. "I'm still protesting that hairy legged feminist show piece. I still say the guy should prove himself worthy of the girl's attention, not the other way around, but I still want to go to the dance."
"As you wish." Xander swallowed a grin and moved on. "I'm doing regular scans for der kinderstadt at the hospital, but it may not show up until the flu it took advantage of. The housing project that led to the discovery of Acathla hasn't been announced yet. Until those things happen, there's nothing else we can do about it. Giles and Jenny are going to track down a demon god mask that raises dead people that Joyce got in at her gallery, if we can find it first, we can destroy it."
"I think I have a lead on it." Jenny told him. "There are rumors about it, but no recent incidents concerning it."
"No, it takes power to activate it and only the dead are affected." Xander answered. "The Hellmouth puts out enough energy to affect it."
"The last incident was in New Orleans. Which makes sense, there's a lot of Magic users there." Jenny said. "I'll find it, don't worry about it."
"I won't. Thank you, even if we didn't have a concern ourselves it shouldn't be out there loose anyway. With Kakistos blown up, so much fun, Faith and her Watcher are safe from at least him. Giles is keeping in contact with her Watcher and hopefully things will stay good with them."
"We can't count on that." Giles said. "These Shadows had a use for her counterpart after all. We haven't confirmed whether they exist here and while there are an abundance of stories about various powers, aside from the gods, no proof exists regarding any of them. Certainly no group that ever claimed they tested humans for any reason," Giles informed them. "as this Whistler told Angel, but that doesn't mean they don't exist, just that they keep a low profile. Someone put Angel in Buffy's path, after all. We can only remain on guard and continue searching for information."
"And Kendra?" Xander asked.
"Her Watcher is a traditionalist and very mired in the ways of the Council, which means he sends her out armed only with a stake and has trained her in hand to hand combat. He has custody of her and we have no way to help her at present. Faith's Watcher is far more progressive and actually does care about Faith."
"I don't think her counterpart ever recovered from the loss of her Watcher." Xander said sadly. "And the Shadows working to isolate her certainly didn't help matters. And Gwendolyn Post?"
"I've confirmed she was fired from the Council for the inappropriate use of Magic and Jenny and I found the Glove of Myneghan where you thought it would be."
"Amy and I destroyed it." Jenny confirmed.
"It wasn't difficult." Amy agreed. "First time I've ever used Magic to destroy a physical object, but Jenny's use of combining technology and Magic made it easier. It's a very modern approach to Magic and it works."
"And combining the old, channeling the power of a god and modern day technology and Magic is certainly innovative." Xander observed. "Oz, you know Debbie Foley, her boyfriend, Pete Clarner became one of those humans they had to deal with. He was an abusive asshole who created a formula of some sort, possibly scientific, possibly magical, possibly a combination, that made him a Doctor Jeckle and Mister Hyde, he killed at least one person next fall and went after you. Is she dating him yet?"
"No, she's not dating anyone right now."
"I'll talk to her." Cordelia offered. "I can tell her, girl to girl, in a gossip mode that there are rumors and stories of Pete abusing his girlfriends. It may spread and other girls may avoid him."
"I'll occasionally do a surface scan of him myself." Xander said. "I don't need to dig into his mind, just let his own broadcast into mine. It's uncomfortable, but if he does start making this formula, he'll be thinking about it and I'll know. At which point we can destroy the formula and try to intervene with anyone who might be in danger from him. If he attacks someone the police can then be called."
"The telepathy has been more useful then you thought it would be." Giles observed.
"So far, yeah. That may be because we're clearing the deck and haven't yet faced any unknown threats." Xander confirmed. "Eyghon never showed up because you got rid of the tattoos, but Ethan might. Someone, they hadn't yet found out who, hired him to dose and sell candy that made the adults act like horny teenagers. It was a distraction, while four vampires kidnapped four newborn babies from the hospital."
"Why?!" Giles demanded. "Why would he be involved in something like that and why were the babies kidnapped?!"
"A lot of money and as a sacrifice for a demon called Lurconis."
"Lurconis." Giles said. "He's here, in Sunnydale?"
"Next fall he was. Whether he's here now, I don't know. But I do know where he was found. Buffy set him on fire. There are flamethrowers that can be purchased for use in yard work for example. If we get enough for each of us to have to use and we can find Lurconis, we can literally roast him." Xander decided.
"If you know where he was found, I can find the particular summoning needed to call him." Giles said. "And we can destroy him."
"We need to take Lurconis out, but doing so will undoubtedly attract the attention of whoever hired Ethan." Xander pointed out. "Our counterparts hadn't found out who that was yet. Whoever he is, he was willing to sacrifice babies to a demon. I doubt he'll have few scruples about coming after us. We need to be ready, we may finally have an actual challenge to deal with."
"Than the training needs to be intensified." Giles advised. "We need to be prepared, things may become very difficult soon."
