"Alright." Crowley said as he walked pass Cassi when he eyed a fancy soap display. "You don't have to be rude."
Cassi rolled her eyes and decided it best for her to explore the shop, trying to get something that screamed romance, as Crowley had mentioned. "I'll look around."
"Don't stray far." Crowley said over his shoulder as he smelled the different soaps.
"I'm not a child." Cassi mumbled as she walked, keeping an eye out. She could do this. She was the epitome of love and she happened to read quite a lot of romantic literature. Her parents could do with some pointers. Although her angelic father had entertained her idea of reading something from this century and, after him fangirling over a character named Rhys, Cassi thought she might have created a monster. Regardless, a monster who had somewhat of an idea of what romance could be. Better than leaving the two of them clueless.
"It's like destiny." A voice sounded behind her, making her shift uncomfortable. "Fancy meeting you again. Small town, I blame." Cassi closed her eyes and shuddered. "Apologies, I don't mean it."
The miracle exhaled sharply, desperately seeking her voice. "What are you?" Her voice was low, and she turned slowly.
"Your dad is quite right, you are a little rude. Not even an introduction." The boy moved closer. "Elliot." He extended his hand. "In case you've forgotten." Cassi could feel her heartbeat in her palm while her ears rang with white noise. Her throat became dry and her chest heavy. Despite this, she willed her feet to move but unlike the last time, she was able to take a step to her left only to be blocked by the hazel eyed boy. She parted her lips, her mind screaming to call out for her demon father. "I've never met another nephalem quite as stunning and shimmering as you before. Trust me when I tell you you're also disgustingly overwhelming as well."
"Nep-" Her grey star-like eyes met his.
Elliot cocked his head to the side. "Nephalem. You are part angel and part demon are you not?"
Cassi gulped and basic instinct told her she needed to get away from the stranger.
"Nephalem." He repeated. "A powerful one at that. Parents must lo-" he pretended to throw up, "-ve you a little too much to make you this annoying." Elliot took her appearance in. "You reek of angelic aura, the, ugh, love thing. But there's a little demon inside you. Ever wonder what it would be like to release that part of you? Or are you ashamed of your demon father?"
"Never." She said sternly, meeting his eyes. "Leave me alone before I call him or do I have to get rid of you myself." Her grey eyes turned slightly darker, her expression foreboding.
Eliot smiled. "Now that's more like it." He growled. "But put your horns away, not here to rile you up." He circled her. "I felt you a month ago. Took me completely by surprise. I mean, I've met other nephalems but," he whistled, "not anywhere near as, how should I put it, impressive as myself." Having had enough of the stranger, Cassi began to walk away. "So how long have you been on the run for?"
She paused and turned. "Excuse me?"
"From heaven. How long have you been eluding them?" He winked. "I knew something had happened almost a hundred years ago. I felt…something and it took me a while to figure out that something was you. I was wondering when you would appear. And here you are. Heaven's new weapon against me. Don't let that fool you, they will destroy you afterwards."
"I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Oh? Parents don't share much, huh?" He clicked his tongue. "My demon dad was killed by holy water when hell found out about me. Angel mom was made to watch and vowed revenge on heaven. Little it did her when they casted her off onto hell's biggest fire. Nope. Heaven and hell don't like us. We are too…much to handle."
"Again, I have no idea what you're on about."
"You were born in Wales, were you not?" He took Cassi's silence as confirmation. "I was too but it wasn't Wales back in that era. Dreadful weather back then, there were glaciers all around. Anyway, if you want to know more, you should visit the Barclodiad y Gawres chamber where you will find answers. Of what you're truly capable of."
Cassi eyed him carefully taking in what he was spewing as nonsense. "You're ridiculous."
"Cassi?" Crowley's voice rang close.
"Demon dad?" Elliot smiled as he slowly walked away. "Poor bugger. I heard the falls from heaven were quite excruciating. I bet he can still feel the moment the light was taken from him."
Cassi was left puzzled by the odd exchange and the heavy weight in her chest slowly slipped away.
"Cassi?" Crowley called again as he found her. "Did you find anything?"
She exhaled and composed herself. "I thought I did but not really." She smiled.
Crowley smiled and patted her head. "That's alright, no need to feel sad about it." He teased. "Now," he chuckled, "what are your thoughts on something called stuffed animals plushies?"
"What's all this?" Aziraphale questioned as he entered the kitchen.
Crowley gave him a quick peck on the cheek and handed him a snake plush. "For our date. It'll be great." Aziraphale grunted in annoyance as he knew the demon had gone overboard. Prompting the duo to bicker about the unruly clutter Crowley had brought into their home.
Cassi's eyes were on the pair, but her mind was miles away. "Are you alright, darling?" The angel noticed her quiet demeanor. Cassi nodded and smiled politely at her angelic father. "Did you purchase anything for yourself?"
"Oh," she sighed, "n-not really. I simply went along for the ride." Aziraphale smiled lovingly at her before turning his attention back to an enthusiastic Crowley. "Dad?" Cassi spoke after having her mind go back and forth. "May…may I go to Wales tomorrow?
Crowley stopped what he was doing and exchanged glances with Aziraphale. "What?"
"You said I could borrow the car."
"Yes, to drive around town, not go to another bloody country."
"Why would you want to go to Wales, darling girl? You know we can't have you running off on your own in the meantime. We are not about to risk your safety."
"I promise I will be back before the day ends." She closed her hands together as if she was praying. "Please. I'll be extra careful and I'm…I'm only going to pay my respect to my parents. It's been a minute since I've been there." She looked at Aziraphale for help, giving him the same puppy eyes he gave Crowley whenever he wanted something. "They did…provide me with food…shelter…love." She pouted.
"Erm," Aziraphale placed his hand on Crowley's, "I don't see the harm. It will just be a quick trip and you can always use your mobile phone to check in and dad here can look after you while you're driving. Isn't that right, dearest?"
Crowley knew when he was defeated. "Mhm." Was all he said instead of the colorful words he wanted to say.
"One scratch, Cassiopeia, and you're…you're…grounded." Crowley had warned. "No distractions, no driving too fast or Aziraphale will go mental, no, um, technology while driving, no talking to strangers and call me when you get to Wales." He closed the door for her and could not help but chuckle as she put on one of his glasses. "Please," he said with a gentle tone, "be careful."
Cassi nodded in reply and drove away. She felt semi guilty she had lied to her parents, although technically, she was going to her other parents' grave for some upkeep. Meanwhile, the drive was relaxing enough, and the Bentley played the best of the 80's throughout. As a compromise with Aziraphale, she kept a respectable driving speed of 90 mph, not too fast, at least for her, and not too slow.
And as promised as well, as soon as she had made it to Wales and had driven to the old farm she once lived on, she got out of the Bentley, proceeded to pull her phone out and FaceTime her parents. "Did you go back to bed? You did wake up early." She noticed Crowley's unkempt locks.
"What?" The demon on the other side of the phone ran his fingers through his tangled hair which looked as if someone had pulled it every which way. "Oh, um, yea. Stayed in bed after breakfast and…anyway, looks like you made it safe and sound."
Aziraphale made himself known as he stood next to Crowley. "Cassi, darling, did you pack your jumper? It's a bit chilly up there."
"Papa, I don't get cold." She noticed Aziraphale's stern look and sighed. "I'll put it on."
"Right, well, don't stay too long and come back as soon as possible, darling girl. Don't talk to strangers. We love you."
Cassi sighed. "I'm not a child."
"You're not an adult either." Crowley smirked and hung up.
"Is that the love thing humans go on about?" Elliot's voice echoed behind her. "Ugh, how disgustingly so."
Cassi turned around to face the intrusive entity. "Have you ever considered being normal and making yourself known first and, I don't know, saying hello. Did you follow me?" There was something quite different in the way Elliot held himself. The two times he had been around her, he had looked striking as if nothing could harm him, smug bastard. This time, however, he seemed so normal and small in a way. "Are you alright?" She asked concerned.
Eliot stuck out his tongue and grunted. "This place." He looked around. "Reeks of love." As Cassi looked around the familiar plain, she had noticed she did not feel so engulfed as previous encounters with the other nephalem. "Simple really," Eliot began as he noticed Cassi's perplexed expression, "most of the world is filled with disdain and some, like this patch, is more, hmm, flashes of love."
"I doubt that. Hate is not on everyone's heart."
"Not hate, per say, but other things like greed, arrogance, lust, you know, the works."
Cassi exhaled sharply and eyed the boy. "You did not answer my question. Did you follow me?"
Elliot scoffed and pretended to take offense. "What do you take me for, little nephalem, a stalker? I might be other unholy things but that I am not."
"Why do you keep calling me that?"
"A nephalem?" He looked her up and down. "Because you are one?"
Cassi shook her head. "I was created."
"Regardless if you were created, miracled, or birthed, you are still made by a demon and an angel; therefore," he pointed at her, "nephalem." Eliot circled her. "I wonder what you can do."
"Do?"
"Exactly. Do. What your parents are able to do, you can most likely do as well and I'm not talking about miracles." He smirked as his feet stopped in front of her. "You have wings, little nephalem?"
"Wings? I - I do not."
"I bet you do, and I bet they are magnificent."
"What do you want?"
Eliot chuckled and crossed his arms. "You're the one that chose to come here. Question is, what do you want to know? Curious little nephalem."
Cassi sighed and walked around him. "I came here to visit my earthly parents' grave."
"And it's a coincidence you just happen to do so after I mentioned Wales?" Eliot chuckled and began to follow.
"Exactly. Quite a coincidence indeed and stop following me or I'll emit more love."
Eliot smirked again. "Threatening? I like it. Hm, would you like to see something wild?" Cassi stopped and turned to him. "Will be worth it, trust me."
Cassi traced the ancient markings on the wall. "What does this one say?"
Eliot gently pushed her out of the way and mumbled to himself. "That's just a cuss word."
"Oh."
Curiosity had lured Cassi to follow Eliot to the Barclodiad y Gawres burial chamber. Known as a tourist site, Eliot has convinced her it was much more than that. He had snuck her further inside where a stone wall had been a secret passageway. Within the hidden chamber there was another passage leading to, what seemed, the center of the earth. Eliot had brought a stick from outside and had miracled a steady fire at one end. Inside the hidden tomb were carvings and markings of a once upon a time story. The story told of angels and demons mingling after the fall, refusing to let some friendships flame out. However, it was heaven who banned angels from fraternizing with the newly formed demons. Hell had not an objection until someone had crossed the line and created a nephalem. The entities who had created the first one had, unfortunately, presented it to heaven in hopes of talks of forgiveness, and it was heaven who got rid of the nephalem, along with its creators. Some angels found it unfair and refused to follow heaven's strict rules. They descended to earth, met some demons and formed their own society.
It didn't take long for nephalems to become their own species and it didn't take long for heaven and hell to find them and eradicate them.
Eliot clicked his tongue. "They fear us for no reason."
"But…it does not make sense. How can a demon love? That's not possible."
"So your dad…?"
"He was an angel once. That's why he's able to."
"Your age is showing." Eliot laughed. "Some demons were once angels. Lucifer for example, who chose to stay in hell, but some newly formed demons still had their little angelic, hm, aura, if that's what you call it, within them. Therefore, they were still capable of friendship and that love thing."
"Why are you showing me all this?"
"You heard of the second coming, yea? Well, before that there is another battle between heaven and hell." He pointed between them. "We are not to exist because we represent heaven and hell…together. Hell and heaven tied together by our existence. And," he gestured her to follow, "here we have someone, rather apair, that look awfully familiar."
Cassi's expression turned wide eyed as she recognized her angel father and demonic father. The carving made it seem as if they were linked from the very beginning as an angel Crowley stood on top of his current form. Below her two parents stood someone like her.
It was all there, carved in an ancient tomb. Their parents' meeting, Crowley's fall, the garden of Eden, their friendship through the years, their placement on earth, their rough patches, and their love appeared to be all part of a greater plan. An ineffable plan.
