Ryo had owned the duffle coat for several years and saw no reason to give up wearing it. Okay, so maybe it wasn't what anyone would call fashionable, but it was cosy, and it had a hood he could flip up over his knitted hat for extra warmth when the wind was howling, or the rain was pouring down. Dee said the coat made him look like a teddy bear, but as far as Ryo could tell, that wasn't a criticism; his lover seemed quite fond of the old coat too.

Nevertheless, despite having no intention of replacing his faithful duffle, Ryo had decided he should get another coat, something smart that he could wear to court or on special occasions. Comfy though it was, the duffle didn't really go with his suits or his smarter casuals, and while that didn't matter when he was working a case, there were other times when it might be better to look less like Paddington.

Buying a new overcoat wasn't a case of just walking into the first menswear store he came to and grabbing something off the rack, however. He needed to find something stylish yet affordable, and preferably warm without being too heavy. That meant trying on a lot of coats, and there wasn't as much choice as there might have been back in the summer. A lot of the coats on sale now were more suitable for summer wear than for winter warmth.

Although he knew he could wait until the summer, because the duffle coat was plenty good enough to see him through the winter months, Ryo was determined to keep looking. Some shops still had some older stock, and there was a chance he might find something at a reduced price.

After almost a month of coat shopping whenever he could spare the time, Ryo's search finally paid off when he found a slate grey, fully lined, calf-length woollen trench coat on clearance. The label claimed it was water-resistant, it was his size, and it fitted him comfortably, with room enough that he could wear it over a suit jacket or a winter sweater. Buckling the belt, he studied himself in the shop's full-length mirror and smiled. Smart and stylish, it wasn't cheap even at a reduced price, but it was still within his budget.

He could wear it next time Dee took him out on a date.
