It was a dark and stormy night. The orphanage keeper was just putting all the orphans to sleep when she heard the doorbell ring.
"Oh! Who could be outside in the rain at this hour of the night?" She wondered
She opened the door just in time to see a dark shape flying away from the door. She tried to see what it was but she couldn't. And there was something at the doorstep too
"What is this?" she wondered reaching down and picking up the bundle of blankets. She opened them up to find a baby Smoliv inside. "Who the heck leaves a baby outside in the rain?"
Angry at whoever left the baby outside in the rain she took the Smoliv inside and closed the door. Luckily the orphanage had an open cradle so she put Smoliv inside it.
"Do not worry little baby we will take care of you here. You will never be wet and cold again."
Smoliv did not reply because it was a baby and asleep. But it looked happy about that
The orphan keepers named him Buddy and Smoliv grew up with all the other orphans. He did not have a good time at the orphanage because he could never get along with the other orphans. They made fun of him for being small and looking funny and not having any arms. When he was six years old the big bully Riolu even made him eat an everstone so he couldn't evolve. The orphan keepers kicked Riolu out for that but it was too late.
Even though he was always bullied and never got to grow bigger Buddy liked it at the orphanage because the orphan keepers were always nice to him and he really was never wet and cold again. He was sad he didn't have real parents but the orphan keepers were nicer to him than his real parents probably ever would have been since they left him so he was okay with that. And they tried to stop the other pokemon from bullying him but it was hard cause he was very short and they could kick him and the orphan keepers wouldn't notice.
It wasn't until Buddy's tenth birthday that he started to get worried. At ten years old was when orphan pokemon were supposed to be adopted by trainers but all the other orphans kept telling him no one would want to adopt a stupid little Smoliv. And Buddy knew they were right who would want to adopt him instead of Umbreon or Heatran or Butterfree.
On Buddy's tenth birthday they brought all the orphans out and made them stand in a line in a big gym room with bright lights.
"Okay orphans we are going to bring in new trainers one by one. You need to impress them so they will want to adopt you to be their new pokemon. There are six of you but we only found five trainers today so one of you will not be adopted." The head orphan keeper explained.
Buddy nearly started crying. He knew he would not be adopted because of this. But he knew the other orphans were watching and he wouldn't cry in front of them because then they'd win. So he just made a determined face when the first trainer came in.
The first trainer was a boy he looked fifteen years old and he was wearing blue jeans and a black t shirt. He had curly black hair and big glasses. He looked like a nerd and he looked at all the pokemon.
"Which pokemon should be my partner?" He wondered.
Umbreon cried out "UMBY!" and made all his rings glow.
"CHARRRR!" Charizard screamed and then he used flamethrower on Umbreon.
Umbreon made a whimper and ran under a table with his tail burning.
"Wow youre so strong!" the black hair trainer said. "Can I have Charizard?"
"Yes. Here is his pokeball." The head orphan keeper said and he gave the trainer a pokeball. The trainer pointed his pokeball at Charizard and Charizard disappeared in a red light and the trainer smiled and left.
The next trainer to come in was a girl she looked twelve years old and she was wearing a red skirt and a purple t shirt. She had long brown hair and she looked cheery.
"Wow! So many strong pokemon!" She said and she smiled at all of them.
Gabite did a backflip to try and impress her but that didn't seem to work. Ninetales flipped all of her tails in row like a dancer but that wasn't working either.
The female trainer looked at Buddy and there was a big smile on his face.
"OMG he is so cute!" She exclaimed grabbing her hands together and getting heart eyes. "Can I have him?"
"You want Smoliv?" The orphan keeper asked sounding surprised.
Buddy couldn't believe it. He was really going to be adopted!
Umbreon came out from under the table (he wasn't on fire anymore) and gave an upset cry realizing he was missing his chance. He ran right up and knocked Buddy out of the way. He made his rings glow bright again to show off to her.
"An Umbreon?" The trainer asked sounding surprised. "But don't they evolve from happiness?"
"Yes Umbreon evolve when they are very happy." The orphan keeper explained. "Umbreon evolved on his birthday party when we brought out the cake."
Buddy remembered when that happened. The orphan keepers always gave all the orphans a birthday party each year and they were supposed to be a great time but no one ever really came to his. He liked them anyways though because that wasn't any different from every other day and he still got to eat cake. He liked chocolate.
"OMG! That's amazing!" The female trainer said excited. Her heart eyes were looking at Umbreon now and were bigger than ever. "He's such a positive pokemon that he evolved from happiness even though he is an orphan. I want Umbreon!" She said.
Now Buddy really wanted to cry. He was so close and that was his only chance. But no one really cared about a little Budew that couldn't evolve compared to all the big and strong pokemon here like Charizard.
The girl trainer took Umbreon and she left and another trainer came in. Then another one came in after that one and then a few more. More and more of the orphans around Buddy did their cool tricks and impressed a trainer and got adopted and no one even really looked at Buddy except to be confused why he was there.
Soon the only orphans left were Buddy and Gible. Gible was the second smallest pokemon there and he was always mean to Buddy because Buddy was the only one he could bully.
"Okay we have one last trainer." The orphan keeper said. He looked at his list and frowned. "But that can't be right. It says the last trainer is"
The doors burst open again and one last trainer entered. It was a short boy in jeans and a blue vest with black hair. He had green gloves a red cap on turned backwards.
The orphan keeper gasped. "Oh my! You're Ash Ketchum!" he exclaimed in surprise. "But you're a pokemon master! What are you doing here?"
"That's right! I'm Ash Ketchum from Pallet town!" Ash Ketchum exclaimed and clutched his fist. "I came here to meet a very special pokemon!" Ash looked at the two pokemon remaining and frowned and folded his arms. He was thinking.
"Well we already gave Charizard away. The only pokemon was have left here are Gible and Buddy." The orphan keeper explained. "They are very special but I don't think someone like you would want either of them. Sorry."
Ash didn't seem as sure. He was watching the two orphans very closely.
Buddy was confused now. He didn't know who Ash Ketchum was but this was clearly an important trainer. Why were they here now when it was only him and Gible left. He didn't think an important trainer like that would ever want him but to an important trainer Gible was just as lame. He'd probably just leave without either of them but maybe he had to take one. Maybe this was Buddy's chance.
"Smah!" The Smoliv jumped forward and made a determined cry. He looked Ash right in the eyes and demanded to be picked.
Gible got mad at this and used Tackle on Buddy knocking him over. But he wasn't ready to give up yet so he tackled Gible back and they started rolling on the floor. Buddy grew a vine and smacked Gible with a Vine Whip and he screamed.
"Now! Now now! Stop this at once!" The orphan keeper screamed. "You are embarrassing us in front of Ash Ketchum!"
But Ash folded his arms and nodded. "Cant you see that Gible is bullying him?" The pokemon master asked. "He's just defending himself."
The orphan keeper stopped a minute and watched. Buddy managed to throw Gible and shook the dirt off himself. He was upset now but he tried to turn back to Ash and give another determined face.
Ash smiled. "Yeah! That's the one I came for!" he suddenly exclaimed. "I know it!"
The orphan keeper was surprised but he quickly pulled out a pokeball. "Yes! Right away master Ketchum!"
Ash shook his head. "No. I don't need a pokeball Buddy can just come with me."
The orphan keeper was surprised again but he nodded and put the ball away. "Okay! Gible you are coming back with me. We will find you a trainer another day."
Gible was crying but Buddy didn't feel bad. That was what Gible deserved for bullying him and Buddy was too happy to feel bad. He wasn't going to be an orphan anymore! And his trainer was apparently very special.
For the first time ever Buddy felt hope.
Ash Ketchum kneeled down at smiled at Buddy. "Hi! I'm Ash Ketchum! I am going to be your trainer now." He explained. Buddy smiled back at him. "You are probably confused why I came here to find you but don't worry I will explain it all soon. Now come on."
He picked Buddy up and placed him on his shoulder. It was warm and Buddy liked it there. He grew a vine to wave goodbye to the orphan keeper was they left and the confused man waved goodbye back.
Buddy's adventure was finally beginning!
