Oliver squinted down at the map in his hands, confirming that his representative dot was, in fact, on top of the X, before lifting his gaze back up to the building in front of him.
"No way." He muttered under his breath. "Maybe I got the wrong map." But even he didn't believe his words as he scrutinized the building. It was built out of bricks and quartz, standing out against the dark forest, with a sign above the door that read "Monster School". It was absolutely silent, even the sounds of the forest seemed to have gone quiet around it. Eerie atmosphere aside, Oliver… wasn't a monster.
Three months ago, at the end of his last semester of middle school, Oliver had been entered into a drawing for a full scholarship to a private boarding school. Last month, he had received a letter informing him that he'd won. His parents had been thrilled, and over the last couple of weeks he'd been packed up and shipped off to the rendezvous point, along with a map that had come with the letter. From the train station, he had followed the map, and nothing about this had seemed weird to him until just now.
Oliver snuck a glance around himself, wondering if this was some sort of prank. Maybe there was a hidden camera? If there was, it was hidden well. He squared his shoulders, looking back at the building. Maybe the name was… unrelated.
Slowly, he made his way up to the building, climbing the steps and hesitating in front of the door. Should he knock? It was still so quiet. After a moment of consideration, he rapped his fist gently against the door, then fell quiet to listen. Nothing. He grabbed the handle and pushed the door open.
The inside was warmly lit by torches, but appeared empty. Before him was a hallway, with several branching off of it, but straight down at the other end was a door labeled 'classroom'. The semester didn't start until tomorrow, but maybe there would be someone in there?
"Hello?" Oliver called quietly, slipping through the doorway and shutting the door behind him. No response. He made his way down the hall, his steps muffled by the thick, red carpet that lined the entryway. As he approached the door, Oliver perked up at the sound of voices - the first sign of life in this odd place. Slowly, he reached out and gripped the knob, then pushed the door open enough for him to peer inside.
The room beyond was - as expected - a classroom, at the head of which was a man with his back facing you as he wrote on the chalkboard. That was normal enough, what wasn't normal was the fact that nearly every seat was filled by a monster. Zombies, skeletons, spiders, and even a creeper were sitting patiently, listening attentively as the man spoke. Oliver's heart leapt into his throat, and he started to try to ease the door shut, but before he could move the man turned and focused on him.
"Ah, Oliver." He called out, drawing the class's attention to him, and Oliver promptly hid behind the door. "Come in! We've been expecting you." Oliver hesitated for a moment. He couldn't exactly say no. So, he pushed the door open again, clutching his backpack straps as his heart pounded in his throat.
"My name is Herobrine, I'll be your teacher for the semester." The man greeted him. The glasses he wore only somewhat hid the fact that his eyes were glowing. "Welcome to Monster School."
i decided it was time to turn that "39 published stories" into "40".
i tried to make a poll on my profile about this but fanfiction has decided to Not Work, At All. so! this is my monster school fic, which is based off of the original monster school animations by Willcraft. It's also based on like… normal high school, which is ambitious for me since i was homeschooled and have only been inside a high school twice in my life. so. don't expect this to resemble any high school you've ever been to.
this is also another case of "lydia writes a reader insert and then edits it for fanfiction dot net rules", so I've written twelve more chapters of this but who knows when they'll be up since i have to "translate" them for the fanfiction audience.
anyways hope you enjoy!
