The Princess and the Peasant - An Avatar the Last Airbender Fanfiction…

A/N - Well, this story idea came to me after re-watching the show's cartoon version/the new live-action version. I wanted to write this, and I hope you all like it. This story will be a Sokka/Suki pairing in an Au where things differ slightly from the show. Anyway let me know what you think, feedback is welcomed of course! I hope you all enjoy it! :)

Chapter 1

The snow glimmered in the sunlight as a royal golden and green carriage was pulled through the rough tundras of the South Pole. It wasn't often that the royal family of all four nations was out and about, especially in this part of the world, and when it was, sometimes it was never good. A fourteen-year-old girl sat in the golden green carriage, watching outside her window, viewing the cold tundra.

Winter had never been her favorite season, and there was a reason for it. The cold affected her body like every other average human, making it hard for her to utilize her fighting skills. Shivering in her seat, the fourteen-year-old girl pushed back a hair stain as she took a deep breath, preparing herself for what she was about to see.

"Princess Suki, we're almost there." Kutsan, her royal adviser, explained with a smile while he placed another coat over her shoulders to keep her warm. "I suggest you prepare yourself for your big speech. These Water Tribe peasants need to know the information."

Sighing, Suki rolled her eyes at her adviser. He always complained about the Water Tribe nation. I'm well enough ready for my speech. I already reviewed everything with my mother and Haru," Suski smiled. I'm ready to get this over with so we can go home and escape this cold."

Nodding, Kutsan watched as the nation's Princess rubbed her hands together to keep warm. Just like Princess Suki, he, too, hated the cold. But what he despised most was the Water Tribe natives. To the world, the Water Tribe was one of the weakest nations ever to exist, and it baffled Kutsan just how long they'd been living there. The fire nation was dominant; everyone knew that. The Earth Kingdom was second best, and the Water Tribe was at the bottom of the food chain. If the Air Nomads were still around, they would be above the Water Tribe. Kutsan hated when he had to attend these royal meetings at the South Pole with the Princess; at least the Northern Water Tribe had class. The Southern Water Tribe was a run-down village hanging on by a thread; it was no wonder they lost all their water benders when Princess Suki's father took over.

"We're here!" a voice called from the front as the royal golden and green carriage suddenly stopped. The impact caused Princess Suki and Kutsan to jerk, but thankfully, they caught themselves.

"It's about time!" Suki sighed. Let's do this!" Sukie mumbled as she dusted herself off while standing.

Kutsan stood and opened the carriage door for the Princess, allowing her to step out onto the snow. Once she stepped foot on the snow, Princess Suki looked at the small ice-building village before her. Unlike her mother's palace, this village was small and slowly crumbling from being only made of ice and snow. Looking around, Suki noticed that the villagers inside started to see her appearance, peering out through the gates blocking her entry. Taking a deep breath, Princess Suki began to move towards the village; the sooner she got her mother's request over with, the sooner she could go back to secretly training to be a warrior….

The water pushed and pulled as she moved back and forth in motion. However, it wasn't much, for the young Southern Water Tribe native wasn't very good with her skills yet. Being the last waterbender in her tribe, twelve-year-old Katara had no one to train her on her abilities. After Queen Yukari took over the four nations, a war broke out. Queen Yukari had the fire nation join her side and set out to destroy other countries so that she and the firebenders remained supreme. First, the Air Nomads were whipped out, and then the Southern Water Tribe Waterbenders were too. Well, all but one. During the raid, Katara's mother had died protecting her from the firebenders, and since then, Katara had to keep her abilities a secret, scared that she too would be killed if discovered. Pushing her hand forward, Katara watched with a grin as the water splashed ferociously against the ice hole.

Feeling her memories of the war come back to her, Katara let her frustration out as she brought her other hand up, pushing them both forward. The floating water swished and lunged forward before falling against the icy floor, splashing loudly. Smirking to herself, Katara was pleased that she had finally been able to make the water move. A yell of surprise caught her attention, and she turned to see her older brother standing there soaking wet.

"KATARA!" Thirteen-year-old Sokka exclaimed in annoyance as he held his arms up, water dripping from his body. Eyeing his younger sister, Sokka shook his head, allowing water to fling about from his drenched hair.

Katara giggled at how annoyed her brother was. For some reason, Sokka always got the brunt of her power whenever she tried water bending. "Sorry, Sokka. I didn't know you were there. I was trying out a new move," Katara smiled.

Sokka approached her with a stern look, which faded her smile. "A new move? Katara, you know you aren't supposed to be waterbending. It's hazardous."

Sighing, Katara rolled her eyes. "I know; that's why I'm out here where no one can see me. I'm perfectly fine. It's unfair that I must hide my abilities; I could do more to help." Katara explained as Sokka grabbed her by the wrist and started dragging her toward their village.

Shaking his head, Sokka frowned. "You do enough to help around camp," He stated, trying to avoid another argument with his sister. Instead, he added, "Now come on, we must return to the village. The nation's Princess is here; we must all be present." Sokka explained as Katara managed to slip her arm from his hold. Together, the two headed to the village.

Just as the two siblings arrived, they noticed the others gathered in the middle near the entrance. Rushing over, Katara and Sokka stayed close to their Gran-Gran, who was anxiously waiting for her grandchildren to return. Nodding to one another, the three turned their attention towards the entrance gate as it opened, allowing the Princess of the Nations to enter. The Southern Water Tribe waited nervously for the Princess to speak, for they knew it was never good when she visited their nation…

Princess Suki stepped forward into the village, taking everything around her. It was scarce for Suki to be outside the palace, let alone on the island where her mother ruled. Whenever she did these errands for her mother, it was the only time she got to see the world and her family's subjects. Taking in the village of the Southern Water Tribe, Suki noticed that many of their homes were made into igloos, with campfires outside. A wall barricaded around the whole town to protect them, and Suki saw that other warriors were lined up at the ice wall, ready to fire if she showed any signs of attacking behavior. Thankfully, she wasn't here to fight (although, being a secret Kyoshi Warrior, she could take any of them anyway); she was only here to speak.

However, before she spoke, Princess Suki looked at the villagers gathered before her, and her heart sank. The majority of them showed fear in their faces but curiosity. The Princess noticed that the villagers were mostly made of women and children. She knew the tribe's men had gone off to fight in the war, for her mother always complained about them being traitors. Suki, however, let her eyes land on two members of the crowd.

The first person she laid on was probably one of the cutest boys she had ever seen, even if he was Water Nation. The boy had to be about her height and around her age, and Princess Suki could tell he was just as scared and curious as the others. His brown hair was pulled back into a wolf's tail, and his bright blue eyes were widened, darting between her and the second member she noticed standing next to him. The girl beside him was shorter, with long, wavy brown hair, hair loops, and brown eyes. The young girl stood close to the cute boy, and Suki wondered if the two were related. She could see straight fear in the young girl's eyes as they eyed one another. Letting her eyes land back on the boy briefly, Suki cleared her throat before advertising her attention to the whole village.

"Southern Water Tribe! I, Princess Suki, am coming to tell you some news from Queen Yukari!" Suki began to explain as her adviser, Kutsan, handed her a rolled-up parchment. Unrolling the scroll, Suki continued to read from it. "From this day forward, Taxes are being raised fifty percent - "Suki began to read as the villagers groaned in frustration and annoyance. "- Failure to pay these taxes will result in dangerous consequences," Suki explained as she looked up to see the saddened faces of the villagers, it hurt her heart even more, she did feel bad.

Clearing her throat, Suki read: " Secondly, there have been rumors that not all water benders have been discontinued; if you know of any, you are to report it to us immediately. Hiding a waterbender will also result in dangerous consequences. We are currently penetrating the Northern Water Tribe as I speak." While she read, Suki missed the worried glance the cute boy gave to the girl next to him. Neither said a word and continued to listen.

"Finally, anyone who does not follow the rules of Queen Yukari will be punished. We've had some rebelliousness in our kingdom, which will not slide by. If you think of trying anything funny, the results will end in the death penalty." Princess Suki spoke as she heard some villagers start whispering to one another. "That is all. Now, I demand to see you all on Nation Day." Suki explained with a smile, but it faded when her eyes landed on the cute Water Tribe boy, who had a look of disbelief on his face. "Until then, loyal subjects, I bid you goodbye."

With that, Princess Suki turned and left the small Water Tribe Nation. Every time she had to give orders like these, Suki felt terrible for those around her. Not everyone was high and mighty like her and her family. Suki knew that these people struggled daily to survive, and if her mother weren't Queen, Suki would do more to help if she could. With a sigh, Suki returned to the royal golden and green carriage, desperate to get out of this place. However, as she looked out her window while the carriage pulled away, Suki couldn't help but think of a particular Water Tribe native she had laid eyes on in the crowd.

Little did she know that their destinies were about to intertwine most unexpectedly…

A/N - So, the two have met, kind of...I started it out like this, but eventually, the two will meet. I'm just not telling you when; you'll have to read to see for that. Let me know what you all think. Should I add Aang to it? What about Zuko? Again, any feedback is welcomed. Just please be kind. This is my first avatar story/fanfiction as well. Thank you! - FantasyLife24
