Chapter 1: Doing the Right Thing
Chapter Text
March 25th, 2017
South Lake Tahoe, California
Daniel was tired of Hawt Dawg Man. Even though he was watching a new episode, it didn't make him laugh like it used to.
He got up from the couch and headed to the living room for a glass of chocolate milk. Pulling the door open, he noticed his arm didn't feel sore any more. Maybe it was finally healed?
He stood in the narrow kitchen, sipping his cold milk real slow and looking over the postcards on Bruce's refrigerator. Bruce must like tropical places. All of the postcards and pictures he had were of palm trees and mountains and tropical birds. Super colorful and bright, like shirts Bruce would wear.
A new picture he'd pinned to the very center of the fridge door drew Daniel's attention.
It was of Bruce and Jacob on a gondola, dressed up in skiing gear, both of them laughing. It looked like one of those automatic shots you get when you go on a ride, like the Splash Dive that Dad would take him on when they went to Aqua World.
Jacob looked the happiest Daniel had ever seen in that photo. Daniel studied it, wondering when it was taken. It was faded around the edges, and Jacob had a different haircut, so it couldn't have been from when they started staying at Bruce's apartment a month ago.
The funny thing was, they didn't look gay. They just looked like two guys, hanging out on a ski trip. But, Daniel didn't really know how to tell the difference. He wondered how he would know if he was gay, too. He'd asked Jacob what the way to tell was, but Jacob didn't want to talk about it.
Daniel didn't really think he was, but he also hadn't been interested in dating girls when he was in school. Most of the ones he tried to be friends with were super mean to him. He preferred to hang out with Noah, anyway. But, he never wanted to kiss him like he'd seen Bruce do to Jacob.
Maybe that was how someone would know?
And he had wanted to marry Lyla, even though she was so much older than him. She was nice and fun . When she watched him while Sean was at track, Lyla used to make a big batch of popcorn with extra butter and he'd put on Power Bear and Hawt Dawg Man and Lyla would make the funniest jokes. And in the summers she'd even get in squirt gun fights with him, which Sean never wanted to do anymore.
Daniel wondered if she even still thought about him now. When you don't see someone for long enough, do they just disappear from your thoughts like they were never there?
Would that mean Dad would disappear one day? And Sean….
Daniel didn't want to think about that. He drained his glass and put it in the sink. He slumped back on the couch, feeling bored. Hawt Dawg was still rescuing Ms. Buns, squirting spicy mustard at the Giant Meatball's stupid army.
"Oh thank you! You rescued me again, Hawt Dawg Man!" Ms. Buns planted a fat kiss on his red cheek. "I am so embarrassed I keep ending up in these horrible situations."
"No need to be worried! You're predicaments give me a reason to-" Hawt Dawg Man turned to the screen and flexed. "Work Hard. Muscle Big!"
"You're so strong! I sure am glad you use your powers for good!"
"Doing the right thing with my powers is what separates me from the bad guys. Isn't that right kids?" Hawt Dawg Man winked at the audience as the theme music started playing.
"That's easy. You're not even real." Daniel grabbed the remote and switched to a different channel.
Everything else on TV was just boring though. He clicked through the channels rapidly, about ready to turn it off and go outside when he suddenly saw a familiar face.
"We're following up on a developing story…"
"Muh—Merrill?" Daniel stared at the screen, watching as Merrill was being escorted out of a hospital in handcuffs.
"Was released today and will be transferred to Pelican Bay Federal Detention Center to await a preliminary hearing on Federal charges of operating an illegal cannabis farm in rural Humboldt County, in the area known as the Emerald Triangle. As we noted in our initial report, the farm was discovered as a result of a violent confrontation between Johnathan Merrill and two young men he hired to work on the farm, commonly known as trimmers. Merrill's lawyer released a statement this morning re-affirming his client's position that the youths were entirely responsible for the confrontation. Both men were 'ungrateful for the job opportunity Mr. Merrill had provided them and attacked his client without provocation, forcing Mr. Merrill to defend himself.'"
"They're talking about Sean and Finn!" Daniel said out loud, banging the remote on the coffee table. "Are they going to be released from the hospital today, too?"
The sign behind where the reporter was speaking read Sacred Hope . Jacob had told him that's where Sean was being taken care of.
"Despite suffering a collapsed lung, multiple broken ribs and a broken collarbone, Johnathan Merrill has fared better than his two alleged assailants, who are both still being kept under police custody at Sacred Hope in serious but stable condition."
Photos of Finn and Sean appeared on the screen—the one of Sean from his driver's license photo.
"One of the two, a sixteen year old boy, is wanted in connection with the death of police officer Kindred Matthews on October 28th, 2016. The minor's father was also killed in that confrontation, and the minor fled the scene with his younger brother. Both brothers were wanted for questioning regarding the tragic incident, but the eldest has been in a coma since the night of the alleged armed robbery, and his younger brother is still missing."
"Coma?" Daniel had heard about those before. It was like a long sleep, where nobody could wake you up.
"The Humboldt County Sheriff's office is working closely with the FBI to locate the younger brother. But, with his older brother unconscious and unresponsive for over a month now, it is unclear if authorities will ever learn the full story about what happened that day in Seattle, or indeed about the violent altercation in Humboldt county. Dr. Krupa, our resident medical expert, explains the reasons why comas are so common in trauma patients:
The screen split and an image of an old guy with glasses but no hair appeared on one side.
"When a human body suffers sudden, violent force—such as in a car accident or collision, the victim's body can initiate a protective response to shield the brain. This response is colloquially known as a coma and is characterized by the brain shutting down higher order functioning that gives rise to the state of consciousness. When the body, and particularly the head, are impacted by high-velocity force, there is a large amount of swelling and potential hemorrhaging that occurs during the first 12 to 18 hours. Reduced neurological activity helps preserve brain cells that would otherwise be damaged or lost as a result of this process."
"So, the coma response may actually be a good thing?" The reporter asked.
"Yes and no." The old guy sighed, pushing his glasses up his nose. "Initially, it's beneficial, but the longer a patient stays in that unresponsive state, the greater the risk that they have suffered irreparable injury to the higher order functions of the mind, and therefore, the less likely it is that they will regain consciousness. Even if they do, they might be impacted by permanent, severe loss of cognitive ability or motor skills."
What? Sean might not wake up?
That was a lot worse than what Jacob had told him. The broadcast switched back to a picture of Sacred Hope, split with a shot of some document that was too fuzzy to read.
"Neither the staff at Sacred Hope nor the law enforcement officials would provide additional details regarding the investigation and presumed charges the two young men face. Familias Unidas , a Police Brutality Victims group, released a statement yesterday, questioning the legality of denying visitor access to the family of the accused. They are also demanding more transparency regarding the investigation and want to know the legal basis of keeping a minor under indefinite custody at Sacred Hope."
The broadcast switched to the weather, with a man chatting excitedly about the sudden cold snap after a week of unseasonably warm temperatures like nothing had happened. Like Daniel's brother wasn't locked up in a hospital in a coma.
Daniel heard the door jingling, and the sound of Bruce and Jacob chatting. Bruce came in first, holding a box of cereal that was Daniel's favorite.
"Crisis averted, little guy! You were almost out." Bruce said as him and Jacob headed to the kitchen, Jacob waving at him.
Daniel sat there bunching his fists together, thinking about Sean and Finn. This whole month, Jacob had told him— had promised that he would take him to see Sean as soon as he got released from the hospital. The way he talked about it made Daniel think that Sean was going to be alright. But he didn't sound alright from the news story.
"I'm gotta hit the shower. Gonna be late for my shift if I don't hurry." Bruce said.
"Go ahead, I think I'll finish my application today."
"You better. Can't live on that pot farm money forever, big spender."
"Right."
Daniel heard them kiss, and Bruce laughing. Like everything was fine. A few minutes later, Jacob came into the living room with two sandwiches, one peanut butter and strawberry jam—cut in triangles the way Daniel liked it. But he didn't touch it.
"Not hungry?" Jacob said, between bites of a gross sandwich with salami, tomatoes and onions on it.
"Not really." Daniel picked at the edges of the bread.
"Missing your brother again? It's okay. I'm missing my sister, too." Jacob gave him a sad smile, the one that made him look so goofy. But, Daniel didn't care.
"No…" Daniel pushed the plate to the edge of the table. "It's that Sean's in a coma ! He might not even wake up. I saw it on the news."
Jacob glanced at the TV, putting his food down and looking at his hands. "Yeah."
"What?" Daniel practically shouted. "You knew? You told me he was healing, and he was going to be fine."
"Sorry, Daniel, I—" Jacob shook his head. "I didn't want to upset you. I thought—I hoped he would have woken up by now. I planned to tell you once—"
"You lied to me. Why does everyone lie to me?" Daniel jumped off the couch. "You said you were going to take me to Sean as soon as he got better. Now, he might not even wake up. The doctor said he could be brain damaged. And you knew!"
"Calm down, Daniel. Please, let me explain," Jacob said, rising from the couch.
"Why do I have to find out everything from the TV? This is just like when Dad died and Sean didn't tell me." Daniel's voice cracked as he remembered that image of his Dad on the screen, dead and laying on the grass. "And now Sean is going to die too."
Jacob started towards him. "No, you don't know that. He's strong, I'm sure he'll come out of that—"
"No! Stop it!" Daniel raised his hand just as Jacob was about to reach him. Without thinking, he pushed Jacob through the air, sending him hurling against the far wall, where Bruce's skiing equipment was set up on display.
Jacob groaned as he knocked against the poles and skis, sending them crashing down on top of him.
"What the hell?" Bruce stormed into the living room with a towel wrapped around his waist, his short hair glistening wet. "My poles—Jacob!"
Daniel stood there frozen, staring at his hand. He'd swore he wouldn't use his powers again, after what happened. After he'd hurt Sean and Finn.
Bruce moved the broken gear off Jacob.
"Are you okay?"
"I think so." Jacob whinced and Daniel saw the small cut over his forehead, where the end of the pole hit him.
"No, you're bleeding." Bruce turned to Daniel, his face intense. "What in the world happened?"
"I—" Daniel stammered. He didn't know what to say.
"Don't," Jacob started. "He just found out about—Daniel come back!"
But Daniel was already halfway out the back door. He hurried down the steps of Bruce's back porch. Jacob was hurt and it was all his fault. Daniel had swore to him that he wouldn't use his powers—and in less than a month he'd hurt someone else with them. He couldn't go back.
No, Daniel decided instantly. He had to make up for his mistakes. It was his turn to take care of his brother. Like the way his big brother had taken care of him when Daniel was sick in that cabin. Daniel hadn't even been grateful—he'd just complained about that ravioli, like a spoiled kid.
He'd told Sean he wasn't a kid anymore, and now he had to prove it.
He would go find Sean and tell him how sorry he was. He would break him out of the hospital and when he got there he would find a way to wake Sean up. His English teacher had told him that people in a coma can still hear things or feel things sometimes. Maybe if he hugged Sean real tight and called his name, Sean would wake up before he got brain damage.
Bruce's cabin was at the top of a hill, and a little road led down to the town, and Daniel knew he could find a ride there—there were lots of tourists coming and going everyday. Someone had to be going in the direction of that hospital. He'd tell them the name of the hospital, and someone would take him. Or maybe he could take a bus.
Daniel started on the dirt road, but then he realized Bruce and Jacob would find him. They might still be mad. They might even decide to turn him into the cops, and keep him from getting to Sean.
He turned towards a small trail halfway down the road that cut through the forest. Bruce had taken him and Jacob that way to town a couple times. Bruce called it the "scenic route." It hadn't snowed in a couple weeks, so Daniel figured he would be okay. They wouldn't think to follow him this way.
Jacob had said he was keeping Daniel hidden cause that's what Sean would want, but Daniel knew Sean wouldn't want to be stuck in that hospital by himself. Or go to Pelicans Prison or wherever they were taking Merrill. He didn't deserve to go to jail. It wasn't Sean's fault the officer was dead.
No—I'll break him out. I'll use my powers for good this time. I'll make it up to Sean, I promise. Just please, God, don't let Sean die before I get there.
Pushing back tears, Daniel hurried deeper into the woods.

Chapter Text
March 25th, 2017
South Lake Tahoe, California
Daniel brushed the mud and pine straw off his jeans as best he could, but there was nothing to do about his backside being soaked. Drying his hands on his t-shirt, he frowned at the puddle of icy water he'd slipped into.
He'd been moving too fast, and the puddle was hidden in shadows cast by the tall trees all around him. Though there was no snow in sight, the water was still just as cold. The slushy snow was making the trail a mix of mud and ice so it was a lot harder than Daniel had thought to go quickly on the trail.
But he had to keep going. He had to make it to the town before it got dark. It would be too hard to find a ride then.
He hadn't heard any sounds of Jacob or Bruce following him, at least not yet. Daniel glanced around at the shadowy forest, wondering what animals lived here. It felt so big, and empty, like there was just him and the trees. It was funny how this forest kinda reminded him of the ones back in Washington, when Dad had taken them camping. And that time Sean had taken him, by themselves, right after...
"Sean." Daniel wiped back more tears, his teeth starting to chatter a bit. It was cooler here in the forest, with the sun being blocked by all the trees. He'd forgotten his jacket, too. Sean would be mad at him for forgetting it.
He came to a fork in the trail. Which way had they gone to town to get to that coffeeshop that served hot chocolate Jacob bought for him?
One way went up, winding steeply, and the other curved down, more straight. That had to be one—the town was below Bruce's cabin. Daniel continued on, his mind made up.
But, the trail went on for what felt like forever, and Daniel's feet were starting to get cold since he hadn't brought his boots either. The trail looked the same, and after a while, it felt like it was going up again.
Was it really the right one?
He was about to turn around when he came to an open area with no trees. There was even a little wooden bench that the park service must have built. From here Daniel could see the whole lake surrounded by snowy mountains. Lake Tahoe , Daniel remembered. The lake was so… big and blue. And all the mountains around it were green with snow on the top. It reminded him of camping with Dad.
And there was the town it was named after, hugging the near side of the lake and just down a ridge below him!
Daniel walked out a little further to the edge of the ridge than Dad usually let him, trying to see if there was a way he could just cut down to the town. But, he heard something move in the bushes. A deer popped its head up, and Daniel jumped up excitedly.
"Oh, a deer! I have to tell Sean! Whaaa—" Daniel's wet shoe slipped, and sent him sliding down the hillside, getting closer and closer to where it dropped sharply off into a pile of rocks.
Doing everything he could not to panic, Daniel reached his hand out and drew energy around a young pine tree that was off to his right. Pulling as hard as he could, he snapped it's trunk so that it fell right in front of him. Daniel smashed into the branches, the straw scratching at his legs and face. It was painful and sticky, but the tree had stopped his fall.
After a few moments of disentangling himself, he stood up. He felt dizzy, and his knee was skinned and bloody, but he managed to carefully climb back up to the top of the clearing, staying close to the ground, walking with his hands like a spider—or a wolf!
The trail was waiting for him, but Daniel was too tired. He needed to rest for a minute, and it felt so good here under the sun, without all the tall trees blocking the light. He sat down, and then laid down on the little bench, pulling off his shoes and wet socks.
He munched on a half broken choco-o-crisp in his pocket, yawning. He would just rest here a few minutes, and let his shoes dry. Then, he'd go find Sean, before…
—
"Jeez, why won't you die!"
Daniel shot hot mustard at another baddie, while five more popped up. They were coming faster now, each of the flying turkeys were coming right at him, looping down faster and faster.
"Dad, stay back!" Daniel yelled, as his father kept running too far ahead.
"I'm cool, don't worry about me." Dad winked, doing a funny hop like he always does when he impersonates Sean skating.
"But, watch out!" Daniel took down two birds that were about to snatch up his dad, who was looking at him with a big, oblivious smile.
"Whoa, good shot!" Dad pointed at the mustard lathered enemy that shimmered and disappeared.
"We have to get out of here. There are too many coming this way." Daniel caught him by hand, tugging at him as a large flock of birds started dropping sizzling hot coals all around them, trying to cook them.
But his dad didn't move, he just stared at Daniel, smiling like a goof ball.
" Mijo , why are you so upset? You're trying your best. That's all we can do, remember?"
"But—" Daniel destroyed two more bad guys, but they were swarming all around him. He took down three or four more. But an especially strong one who wouldn't die, even when Daniel hit him over and over, got to Dad first. He lifted up his Dad, and suddenly Daniel was all alone.
"No! Dad, please! Don't—" Daniel collapsed on the ground, watching his Dad disappear into the sky.
All the birds vanished, and Daniel was alone. And he was starting to get cold. His feet hurt. Then, in the distance, he saw a bench, and sat down, shivering.
He was all alone now. He couldn't save Dad.
"Dad! No! Please, someone help! Sean!"
He started to cry. For some reason, he couldn't stop repeating his brother's name. He needed Sean to hug him and hold him like he did at the hotel after he found out about Dad. Even after he wrecked the hotel, and yelled at Sean, he still didn't get mad at him. Sean was such a good brother.
"Sean, Sean, Sean, Sean…" Daniel kept repeating, louder and louder until his voice hurt. And, then suddenly, he heard the familiar voice. His voice.
"Hey, enano ! I've been looking everywhere for you."
Sean's arms wrapped around Daniel, and they felt so warm. Daniel looked up at Sean, who, unlike Dad, was looking at him with worry in his eyes.
"But, dude, what are you doing out here by yourself?"
"I lost Dad. I couldn't protect him," Daniel said, his voice super low. "I thought I lost you too."
"No way! The wolf brothers always stick together, right?" Sean kissed him on the forehead, and Daniel watched in shock as Sean came around the bench and sat next to him. Sean looked tired and skinny, but he smiled when he glanced over at Daniel.
They were quiet for a moment, just sitting on the bench like when they went hiking together. Daniel could hear the sound of the wind. There were no more bad guys coming. It felt strangely… familiar somehow. Like Daniel had been here before. He wanted to just sit there forever with his brother. He was so glad to have him back.
But he still felt something in his stomach. It tightened into a knot when he looked at Sean. Like he knew Sean was still mad at him. Like when Sean used to yell at him for going into his room and forgetting to knock because he wanted to show Sean something cool.
Daniel looked over at Sean again, and suddenly remembered why his big brother was mad this time.
"Hey Sean…" Daniel made himself talk though he didn't know what to say. "I didn't mean to... It was a bad idea."
"Daniel." Sean shook his head. He seemed so relaxed, as if just sitting together on this bench made him happy. "No way… It's all good."
"Wish we didn't go along with Finn, even though I wanted to…" Daniel said, wishing he could go back to that night and tell Finn he would never use his powers. Even if he had hoped he could make up for getting them fired. He thought he was so good at controlling them.
But that was a big lie.
"It's okay, dude," Sean said in a really strong tone. "You're my brother and that's all that counts."
Sean wasn't mad at him. Was that really true? He looked over, and Sean's body kinda shimmered. Like he was a projection, not his real self. Daniel got up and put his hand to Sean, but it went right through his brother. Something wasn't right. Sean was there, but not really.
Daniel was starting to get cold again. His feet were achy. He got up and moved out to look off the edge of the mountain. He remembered that there was a town down there. He needed to get to that town, but he why?
Maybe Sean was down there… Maybe Sean could come up here and find him.
"So why don't you come and get me?" Daniel asked. He wanted to go find the real Sean, but he felt so cold, and tired. His feet hurt. "I'm alone, Sean. I don't know what to do. I'm scared…"
"Don't get so close to that edge!" Sean said, his voice sounding so real.
It made Daniel want to cry. He was so lonely. And he was lost. He lost everyone. And it was all his fault cause he couldn't control his powers. But, Sean said it was okay. Maybe Sean wouldn't be mad at him after all.
"Please come and get me…" Daniel looked at the forest below him, knowing the only way to get to Sean was down there.
"Yes, I swear!"
Daniel turned at the pain in Sean's voice, but suddenly, he was falling. He screamed, reaching for the branch again, but he couldn't hold on…

Chapter Text
March 25th, 2017
South Lake Tahoe, California
"Daniel! Can you hear me?"
"Sean?" Daniel looked up, but he was having a hard time focusing. There were one— no two guys standing above him.
"He's awake. That's a good sign. I'll carry him."
Daniel was lifted up in the air by a tall, heavy set man.
"Bruce, but… no!" Daniel tried to get the words out, twisting his head to look at the lake under the golden sun. "I was going to get Sean…"
"Okay, buddy. Once you get warmed up."
"You're going to be okay, Daniel." Jacob put a hand on his face, and it felt so warm. "I don't think he's injured, just some scratches?"
"Might have some frostbite on those toes, but it's lucky we found him before the sun set."
But, I need to find Sean. The thought spun over and over in Daniel's mind. He tried to wiggle out of Bruce's grip, but his legs were weak and had a heavy feeling, and eventually he gave up.
He must have fallen asleep because the next thing Daniel knew he was woken up by Bruce dunking his feet in burning hot water.
"Ouch! Stop it!" Daniel croaked, trying to lift his feet out of the bucket. But Bruce's grip was tight on his ankles. "What are you doing? That water is a million degrees!"
Bruce eyed Daniel with an amused expression as he looked over at him from the end of his queen-sized bed.
"It's barely lukewarm, little guy. Your toes were almost blue, so I got to warm them up nice and slow. I told you to wear boots outside my house."
Daniel moaned but didn't say anything else as Bruce continued.
"But, you're lucky. You won't lose a toe—this time." Bruce eased his hands off Daniel's legs and stood up. "Leave them in there for ten minutes. Then I'll replace the water. You are nine years old—you should know better than to run out in the middle of winter like that with no clothes on but your t-shirt. You scared Jacob shitless."
"It's technically spring," Daniel mumbled, avoiding the stern look in Bruce's eyes. Jacob tried to act like a friend, but Bruce always wanted to lecture him like he was his dad. It was so annoying.
"Oh is it, Mr. Science?"
"That's what the weatherman said. Winter ended on March 20 th ."
Bruce crossed his arms over his chest, but then broke into a laugh, twisting his head towards the kitchen.
"This boy is half frozen and still got some sass," Bruce said to Jacob, who had come to stand at the doorway. "You keep those toes in that bucket, you hear me?"
"He heard you the first time." Jacob put his hand on Bruce's shoulder. "Let him rest. I'm sure he's not going to try to run again. You didn't do anything wrong Daniel and I am not mad at you, okay?"
"Okay." Daniel nodded, too tired to argue.
Jacob and Bruce mostly left him alone after that, Bruce coming in a few times to check on his feet. But he didn't say anything else to Daniel. Sometimes Bruce could be really funny and nice. But Daniel could tell he was still mad at him because he'd hurt his boyfriend, just like he hurt Finn and Sean.
Why couldn't he stop using his powers? He thought he could help everyone with them, like how he helped Chris not bust his face when he fell from his treehouse.
But, lately, everytime he used them, it had just made things worse. He waited until Bruce finally left, and he pulled all the blankets over his chest, and started crying. He was the worst superhero in the world. Sean should have had his powers—he was so smart and he would have known how to use them. Maybe he could have even saved Dad, and they would never have had to run away from home.
Instead, Daniel had messed up everything. Sean was wrong. He wasn't a superwolf. He was a super loser; he even failed at finding Sean. Sean probably didn't even want to see him again.
You're my brother and that's all that counts….
Sean's voice came back, like one of those stubborn evil birds from his dream that wouldn't die. He had sounded so real in that dream. Like he had actually been there. And the way he said that was like he actually meant it.
But, Daniel couldn't believe it. He put Sean in a coma. There was no way Sean could forgive him for that. It was just a stupid dream. He had lost Dad and his big brother. He didn't have anybody else now.
Daniel pulled the blankets tighter around him, but he still felt too cold.
"Stop shouting and listen to me. You're overreacting."
"Am I Jay? Really? That's what you think?"
Daniel's eyes popped open, but he lay still as a zombie in the big bed, listening to the heated voices coming from the living room. He could tell it was still early in the morning from the light coming in Bruce's window. But Bruce and Jacob sounded like they'd been awake a while.
"Yes, I think you are." Jacob's voice sounded shaky, like the night he discovered Daniel's powers. "I tried to do it your way. But, it's got to be obvious to you now. I can't handle him. I mean, I can't help him the way he needs. I'm not cut out to be a parent, or even a big brother. I couldn't even be one for Sarah Lee when she needed me."
"So, you're just going to give up? Just like that after four short weeks?"
"No, I am going to get him to someone who knows about this stuff, who can at least give him some direction. I know it's not what you think is best—"
"That's a fucking understatement. I can't believe you! I thought you had some common sense. After all this time, to go crawling back there, and to bring that boy back to the same place that we both barely escaped from. You know how she is. You can't bring him back there."
"Then what else am I supposed to do, Bruce?" Jacob's voice rose, and he sounded almost as upset as Bruce did now.
"What I advised from the beginning. Go to the police station and tell them what happened. If you explain it all, they will put him with his real family."
"It's too late for that. I would get arrested for kidnapping. Plus, that's not what Sean would have want—"
"Who cares what that dumb boy wants. He dragged his little brother into a violent robbery that ended up with him getting shot! And don't think I forgot you knocking on my door in the middle of the night with a passed out kid bleeding from his shoulder. It took me all morning to fix up his bullet wound so he wouldn't get a damn infection. It's a good thing your ex was a nurse, cause otherwise you would have had to go to a hospital—all 'cause of what his big brother got him involved in. So don't talk to me about what Sean wants."
"But, with his powers," Jacob's voice got higher. "If he does something at the police station, or while in child custody, I don't know what they would to do if they discovered—"
"You worry too much Jay. He won't be with them that long." A moment or two passed, and Bruce's voice slowed. "Didn't you say he has a mom or grandparents? Let's call them if you are worried about going to the cops."
"I don't have his mom's info, just a PO box number. And the cops already raided his grandparents. Sean said they'd take Daniel away. It's not right. I told Sean—in the message I left him, I told him that I would keep him safe until he recovers. And he'll be safer and happier in Haven Point. The reverend will embrace him once she learns his story. And I'll be doing right by his brother to keep him away from the authorities."
"By taking him to that backwards, ignorant church in the desert? Back to her ? No, that's child abuse."
"Stop being dramatic! She's not that bad."
There was a long pause before anyone spoke again. Daniel could hear feet stopping on the floor, and the sound of a door opening.
"You think about what I said. You still have time to do what is right by this kid. I'll do some research on my lunch break."
But Jacob's reply was too quiet for Daniel to hear, and the apartment grew silent. Eventually, Daniel drifted back off to sleep. Hours later, he woke up starving. He got off the bed, his feet feeling a little asleep but not numb like they did before.
He'd eaten two bowls of cereal before Jacob walked in through the front door, and lifted his backpack from it's usual spot behind Bruce's big fern.
"Hey, what are you doing with my stuff?"
"Oh, Daniel." Jacob looked surprised to see him. "I thought you would still be asleep. How are your feet?"
"Fine." Daniel saw the bandaid over Jacob's forehead and immediately felt bad again. "Th-thanks for finding me. I was trying to get to Sean. I didn't want to be in the way here. I'm sorry I hurt you."
"Hey, it's okay." Jacob didn't sound okay though. He looked from the backpack back to the car visible through the living room window like something was the matter. "It was an accident. My fault for not being truthful about your brother."
"Yeah, maybe. But, what are you doing with my stuff?"
"Bruce texted me." Jacob sniffed. "Someone from Child Protective Services is coming over and if they find you, they'll return you to your Grandparents. Is… is that what you want?"
"Umm." Daniel shook his head. "No, I want to go find Sean and break him out of that hospital he's stuck in!"
When they had first arrived in Beaver Creek, Daniel had wanted to stay there. He had met Chris, who was even cooler than Noah, and his grandpa was going to show him how to make model trains. And it had been so much nicer than sleeping outside.
But that was before Sean got hurt and trapped in the hospital in a coma. "He's going to die there if I don't get to him! Can you take me to him, please. You can just wait outside and I'll go get him."
"Daniel." Jacob looked like he was going to turn into a tomato, his face getting so red. "No. We already talked about this when I first told you—"
"That was before I knew he was in a coma!"
"Yes, right." Jacob kept glancing at the window, like the Child Services people were going to appear any minute. "But, it's still just as dangerous to do what you are suggesting. You realize that if you try to break in, there are guards outside Sean's room, and you'll have to hurt them to get to Sean. And Sean might get hurt worse, or you will. Sean wouldn't want that. That's why we agreed to wait for him to get out, remember? But we need to go somewhere else to wait for him. I was thinking maybe my family's place. It's not too far from here and you can meet—"
"But Sean's in trouble. I don't want to go anywhere except to find him." Daniel couldn't stop thinking about the things Sean had said in that weird dream.
Enano, I've been looking everywhere for you.
"I had this dream where he was trying to find me and didn't know where I was. I kept calling his name and then he appeared and his voice sounded so real and like he was actually there. What if he does wake up and realizes he is all alone? He's not even going to know where I am! I am not going anywhere except to Sean."
"Oh Daniel, you keep—wait." Jacob stopped short, his face turning funny, like it did when Bruce kissed him in public. "You said you had a strange dream where you were calling Sean and then he appeared?"
Daniel nodded.
"And it was more realistic than normal?"
"In some ways. Not, like, the part with Hawt Dawg Man. But just Sean. It was more like our regular conversations we used to have. But then he disappeared."
"Huh." Jacob paced back and forth in the front of the living room window, mumbling to himself. Then suddenly, he paused, taking a deep breath, putting his hands together almost like he was praying. "I don't know. But, it's not far—"
"What are you doing?" Daniel said. "We need to go if the protective people are looking for me."
Jacob blinked, finally looking up at Daniel. But it was more like he was looking past him, at something Daniel couldn't see.
"Okay, yes. And I understand you want to help Sean. I would want to do the same thing if it was my sister in the hospital. I know someplace we can go, some way you can connect to Sean, maybe get a message to him that you are okay. Or find a safe way to help him without risking breaking into the hospital."
"I don't understand. You mean like a phone call? But, Sean is not even awake."
"No, nothing like that." Jacob picked up Daniel's bag and tossed it to him. "It's hard to explain, but there is kinda someone who can help. It'll make more sense when we get there. Just, trust me this more time okay? I promise I only want what's best for you and Sean. And if you break in directly to the hospital, the whole world might find out about your powers. And that was one thing Sean was right about—you needing to hide. Look what happened when Finn found out."
Daniel didn't exactly trust Jacob, but he still kinda liked him. He hadn't been mean to him about what happened. Not like Bruce had. And Daniel had trusted Finn and that had been a big mistake. He wasn't even sure now if Finn actually wanted to help—or had he just wanted some money for himself?
But, Jacob seemed like he just wanted to help. Daniel did have one question that still bothered him.
"But…I heard you and Bruce arguing? He didn't want you to take me to your family's, to see your mom," Daniel said.
"Oh, the woman he was talking about, she's not my mom." Jacob laughed. "But, we aren't going there right now. Don't worry. Bruce just wants what's best for you, but he trusts the cops more than I do. But, we have to go now, Daniel. CPS will be here any minute." Jacob opened the door. "Unless you want to go with them."
"No. Okay, fine." Daniel grabbed his shoes. "Whoever we are going to see better really help Sean though."
"I can't promise." Jacob helped him down the slippery stairs. "But it's our best shot. He helped me before, when I needed it the most."
"Who is he? Someone you met on the road? Another trimm-a-grint?"
"Nothing like that." But, Jacob wouldn't tell him anything else, acting too busy loading the car.
So, Daniel slumped into the passenger seat. As they pulled away, it made him feel sad to see the cabin get smaller and smaller in the side view mirror. It felt wrong to be leaving without saying goodbye—again. Even if Bruce had lectured him, he'd been fun sometimes, like when they got in a snowball fight after getting hot chocolate.
"Did you tell your boyfriend that we are leaving?" Daniel wondered how mad Bruce would be when he got home and found the house empty.
Maybe kinda like how Sean would feel when he woke up and realized Daniel had left him alone at Merrill's farm because he'd been too scared and thought he'd killed Sean and Finn and everyone.
Jacob barely moved his head but Daniel could tell he hadn't. "I'll let him know later. Once we are safe."
A stupid thought crossed Daniel's mind—he lost another chance to get to learn how to ski. Bruce was supposed to take him this week. And before that, he was supposed to go over the winter— this winter—with Dad. Sean had gotten to go lots of time. But, that would have been Daniel's first time on the real slopes- not the stupid bunny one. Dad had already bought tickets.
If only I had saved Dad that day.
Daniel pressed his face to the cold glass window, looking out at the grey forest as it rolled by. Once they got past town, Jacob started talking to him, telling him how everything would be okay. But Daniel didn't care. He'd heard that too many times, and it never was.
Chapter 4: The Desert Woman
Summary:
After the botched heist at Merrill's Farm, the Wolf Brothers are separated, and Daniel knows it's all his fault. He thought he could control his powers and show Sean that he wasn't a kid anymore. But all he did was end up hurting the only person who truly cares about him.
Why does Daniel even have these powers if he's so bad at using them? Maybe Sean is wrong and he really is a monster? Is there anything Daniel can do to make it up to his brother?
Never Stop Being Brothers is the third part in the Never Stop Series, following Never Stop Shining and Never Stop Fighting which are strongly recommended reading to fully appreciate this story.

Chapter Text
March 26th, 2017
Reno, Nevada
Jacob rubbed his face, letting out a sigh. Daniel thought he looked more tired than usual.
A couple of people in the diner, mostly old white couples, ignored them. Daniel kicked his feet against the cushion, rubbing his french fry in a puddle of ketchup. The more he stared at it, the grosser it looked. Like blood or something.
"Aren't you going to drink your milkshake at least?" Jacob looked up at him. "Your brother said that you loved chocolate."
"I'm not hungry." Daniel shrugged, staring at the large bandaid on Jacob's forehead. "I'm sorry I hurt you."
"Oh, it's not your fault." Jacob took a sip of coffee, his voice lowering. "It was an accident. And I shouldn't have kept that information from you."
"I wish I could just make it go away. It only gets me in trouble." Daniel used to think it was so cool—God had given him powers to save people and stop bad guys. But the only bad guy he hurt, Merrill, looked fine on TV while his brother and Finn got hurt a lot worse when he used them. It was all because he lost control, again. And back in the camp, he thought he was getting so good at it. But, as soon as something serious happened, he would completely lose it. He didn't deserve to have powers.
"No." Jacob pulled out his wallet, placing some money over the bill that the friendly waitress had left. "If you hadn't done what you did, our friends might have been worse off. They might have ended up like your little dog you told us about—Mushroom, right?"
Daniel picked up on the code Jacob was speaking in. It's like how he and Sean would talk about his powers without actually talking about it.
"I miss our friends so much. You know, in my dream, my best friend was there. He said he was going to come find me. It felt like it was actually Se—like it was him talking to me. Does your friend really know how to talk to him even when he's umm—"
"Taking a nap?" Jacob smiled but looked nervous. "Yeah, that ah, might be the best time for my friend to talk to him."
"But, I don't understand." Daniel wished adults would start talking normally instead of hiding things all the time.
Jacob looked around, but nobody was paying them any attention right now.
"Well, the thing is—my friend is kinda asleep too. Finish your food and let's go see him."
"Okay." Daniel nodded, though he wanted to ask more questions.
Jacob finished his coffee and insisted Daniel eat another few bites of his burger.
When they got back on the road, they left the city where they had stopped at the bottom of the mountains and drove for a while on the highway. Everything started to look flatter and brown. All the trees had vanished. It was so different from the green and snowy mountains Bruce lived in.
"This guy lives in a desert?"
"Yeah." Jacob turned off the highway and onto a smaller road that was more bumpy. It looked like nobody drove on it from all the dust. "Well, most of Nevada is one big desert. It doesn't get enough rain for a lot of plants to grow."
Daniel didn't see anything out here except boring dusty fields that had gray stubby plants scattered around them. He wondered if there were scorpions and giant lizards living underneath the sand, like in the pictures in his science books.
"There." Jacob finally said, pointing to a clump of strange-looking buildings made out of clay or mud. But stuck on them were strange pieces of glass, and in the center was a triangle-shaped building. It looked like a tower, it was so tall, rising way up in the sky, with a little golden cross at the top.
Jacob parked beside a worn fence. The writing on the gate was so faded Daniel couldn't read it.
"Umm Jacob, are you sure he still lives here? It looks like he might have moved." Daniel thought the weird buildings might be haunted, or have bandits hiding inside, really to rob unsuspecting travelers.
"His name is Naz. He built this and he used to welcome anybody onto his property. He called it Sacred Point Mountain cause of the obelisk he built." Jacob pointed to the triangle building. "It was supposed to be a beacon drawing people who needed to find something they lost."
"I don't see anyone here though."
"Oh, he died about two years ago. It's been abandoned for a while now. But, it's okay to walk around and visit. Our church bought the property when Naz died."
"He's dead? Then how is he supposed to help us?"
But Jacob didn't answer. Instead, he got out of the car and started towards a gap in the fence. Daniel wasn't sure about the place, but he didn't want to be left alone in the car either.
"Wait, you didn't answer my question."
Daniel followed Jacob through the fence, neither of them talking. The buildings had drawings on them of different animals and people, and faded paint with big numbers on it. The tower in the center just had the glass or shiny rock though, sticking in its sides like thorns on a tree.
Jacob kept looking at the tower. "Before he died, Naz had a vision, well lots of visions, and he built all of this from what he saw."
Daniel thought it was kind of cool, but creepy too. "So he was an artist, like Sean?"
"Kinda. But in a different way. He was a dreamer." Jacob smiled, touching a thick purple rock on the side of the tower. "He created things from his mind, but also used to train students here, and they would come from miles around to learn how to master their skills. And when he saw a person who needed knowledge, he could help them find things they'd buried in their memory. My reverend said he could talk to people in dreams. So maybe he can help you talk to Sean. Let him know you are okay, or give us a sign for what path to take."
"But, he's dead."
"Do you believe in spirits, Daniel?" Jacob said softly.
Daniel wasn't sure about that. Spirits were like ghosts, and he'd never seen one of those. But there was one thing he believed in.
"I believe in Heaven. Where Dad went. And Mushroom."
"Well, sometimes the spirits don't always go right to heaven. Sometimes their work isn't finished. I've felt Naz here after he died. If we just sit, and be quiet for a bit, and close our eyes, maybe he'll communicate with us again."
"That's crazy," Daniel said. "We are going to ask a ghost to give Sean a message in a dream while he's in a coma?"
Jacob raised an eyebrow. "Any more than you being able to break open a safe or juggle things in the air just by looking at them?"
"No, I guess not." Daniel had to admit Jacob had a point, though it took more than just looking to make things move . "But this still feels strange."
"I know. But try one time for me, okay?"
Jacob sat down against the tower, and Daniel joined him. But he still had too many questions to be quiet.
"What did Naz show you last time?"
"You, I guess." Jacob said, looking at him with a funny smile. "I had just left my church, and family. And I stopped here hoping Naz would show me that God was real—that my faith was real, because I had lost it. I prayed and meditated and eventually fell asleep, and I had the most vivid dream that I went out west, to the ocean, and there, on the shore. I found what I was looking for. But I couldn't really tell what it was. Only that it was right there, waiting for me to find it.
"And when we ran into you guys on that beach in Arcata….I didn't know it at the time, but that was probably what the dream meant. It showed me there was something beyond the physical world. Your powers are proof of that, Daniel. They had to come from somewhere, and they had to have a purpose. There's no way it's random chance."
"I don't know. That's not what Sean says. He doesn't believe in God or anything like that," Daniel said. "He told me not to think about things we can't figure out ourselves."
"Well, it's true. I can't say for sure where your powers come from. But Sean would be okay with you looking for answers, right? If it could help him?"
"Yeah, I guess so. Jacob?" Daniel pulled his knees in. "Do you really think Sean will wake up? I am so worried he won't and I'll be alone forever."
And it will be all my fault.
"Hey." Jacob squeezed his elbow. "Your brother is really strong. He is going to make it."
"Maybe." Daniel wasn't so sure.
"Well, I am going to close my eyes now." Jacob said though his eyes were already closed. "And I am going to pray and try to open my mind. We believed that Naz, like my reverend, is a messenger from God. Here to help people. And when we pray, then it's easier to connect to him. You can just sit if you want, or you can pray with me. But I want to be quiet for a bit. Is that okay?"
"Will it work even if Sean doesn't believe in him? God that is. Naz might not want to help."
Jacob took a second to answer, shifting in his position on the ground.
"I think, as long as you believe. That's what counts." Jacob folded his hands in his lap, and Daniel copied it.
Daniel closed his eyes and started to pray the way he'd done every night with Grandma.
Please God, please let Sean get better and not be brain damaged or lose his motor ability, like the doctor on TV says. Please, God. It wasn't Sean's fault. It was my fault because I wanted to help out and get us the money we needed. I am so sorry we tried to rob someone.
I didn't mean to hurt anybody. Please let Sean be okay...and if Dad is up there, tell him I love him and I miss him and I wish I could be in heaven with him too….
Daniel paused, wiping his eyes. He didn't know what to say that would convince God, but he kept on telling him he was sorry and how much he loved Sean. He hoped it would be enough.
Finally, he ran out of things to say. So he just sat there, looking up at the sky, counting clouds until they all started to blur together…
Daniel opened his eyes, surprised he actually fell asleep. Jacob was still sleeping. Daniel rubbed his arms. The wind had picked up and it felt kinda chilly. Striped clouds were covering up the sun, making the building look more gray and shadowy.
To warm up, Daniel stood and walked around the buildings for a bit. The paintings were funny, like people and animals mixed together. There was a waterfall and birds, and a big group all holding hands. Did Jacob's friend really dream about all of this? Why was it so important to build these walls out here just to paint on them? At least, when Sean drew, he used paper that was easy to buy.
Daniel had seen a lot of lizards back at the camp. Some of them had funny, blue markings. Finn had told him that the Native Americans believed if a blue bellied lizard ever let a person touch their blue streaks, it would give them good luck for a year. Daniel didn't really believe it, but he was bored enough to try. And he really needed luck right now with everything going wrong.
He walked around, lifting up stones and old, dry logs around the weird buildings. But all he saw were worms and a few fuzzy looking spiders. He tried one more rock- one of the shiny ones that looked like it had fallen off one of Naz's buildings.
There was a lizard right behind it! Daniel set the rock down far away so it wouldn't hurt it and carefully got down on his knees, extending a hand out. The lizard twitched, turning its head sideways and looking up at Daniel.
"Come here, I won't hurt you."
Daniel reached a little farther, almost touching it. But then the lizard darted towards the building, climbing right up the clay and into a crack high up on the wall. Daniel didn't blame him. Even if he didn't mean to do anything bad to the lizard, people- and animals still ended up getting hurt around him. He hadn't even been able to protect Mushroom.
He looked for some more lizards, but there wasn't anything else alive out here. Eventually, he went to the car and ate the rest of his french fries.
When he got back to the tower, Jacob was finally awake, sniffing and wiping tears from his eyes, and blowing his nose in his bandana.
"Are you okay?"
"Oh, Daniel." Jacob looked up and smiled, but Daniel knew he was upset. His eyes were red and puffy. "Yeah, bud. The wind is just getting to me. How long have you been up?"
"You're lying," Daniel said quietly. "Again."
"Uh, that's true. I didn't want—I was missing somebody, okay?" Jacob blew his nose again, looking away from him.
"Oh." Daniel bit his lip. "I'm sorry you and your boyfriend got in a fight because of me."
"Don't think that." Jacob said. "It wasn't really about you. Bruce is just not happy with my choices."
"He doesn't want you to go back to your family. It sounded like he doesn't like your revend-"
Reverend." Jacob corrected.
"Whatever. He said she was mean."
"Well, Lisbeth is really passionate about her convictions. Bruce is right about that. That's why he left, because of her beliefs."
Daniel had a funny feeling, like it was something he heard before.
"Is it because, you two….Noah, who was my best friend at school, he says its not Christain to be gay."
Jacob's head whipped towards him, looking at him like he'd farted. "That's one belief. And it's what my parents thought too. It's why they wanted Lisbeth to heal me. She never said that exactly, but…but she's a firm believer in the bible, and every single word in it. And that's what made me leave. I couldn't stop my feelings for Bruce. He was the first one I—"
Jacob started crying again, and Daniel wished he hadn't brought it up.
"God, why am I telling this to a nine year old kid? I'm sorry, Daniel. Meeting you has shown me that God is real, whether he cares about me preferring guys, I don't think that matters as much as making sure your gift isn't wasted."
Daniel couldn't think of anything to say. When he'd told Dad what Noah had said, Dad had laughed, and told him la virgin loves every one of her children. It didn't matter who they were. And that Noah and his family should worry more about being good people themselves than about what other people do. It was confusing because he'd never read the bible anyway.
"It's just…" Jacob coughed, like he was getting a sore throat. "I just wish we could have parted on better terms. Especially if I don't see him again. He did alot for me when I first left home. I don't know how I would have survived those first few months without him."
An exciting idea popped into Daniel's head. "You said your dream told you to go to the ocean, right?"
"Yeah..." Jacob looked confused.
"Maybe—maybe that big lake by Bruce's house was the blue water you were seeing." Daniel got excited. "Maybe Bruce was the sign you were supposed to find!"
Jacob blinked, wrapping his hands tighter into the folds of his jacket and staring off into space the way Sean did when he was drawing.
"Huh. I don't know, Daniel. That would be…really something. Perhaps when Sean gets better and you two are reunited, then I can check on Bruce. By then, he might not be so angry, when he knows you are okay."
"I guess." Daniel thought it made more sense to go see him now. Why wait a long time if being apart hurts so much? If Daniel could go visit Sean without getting caught by the cops, then he'd leave right away.
"I didn't see anything this time." Jacob blew his nose one more time. "But, what about you? Did you have any dreams like the one with Sean before?"
"No." Daniel shook his head. "I don't think I dreamed about any—wait. There was one dream."
Daniel had almost forgotten it.
"But Sean wasn't in it."
"Oh. What was it about?"
"I don't know." Daniel had to think for a second. "There was just this strange lady, who was walking around in the desert, kinda like here. It seemed like she was looking for someone or waiting for something. But I never saw her before."
"A strange woman? Did she speak to you?"
"No?" Daniel shrugged. "I didn't—couldn't. But it felt like I was supposed to tell her something. Something important. I tried to say hello. But she couldn't hear me. And then I kinda woke up."
"Maybe I was right." Jacob's voice jumped. "Our reverend is a woman who lives in the desert. Maybe Naz wants you to find her. To talk to her about your powers!"
"But you said I shouldn't let anyone know about that."
"But Lisbeth is different. She would understand you, Daniel. And her and Naz knew each other well. She went looking for him. She was adopted and looking for her biological parents. So her adopted mom took her out here when she was eight to talk to Naz."
"Oh." Daniel still was confused. "Did Naz help her find her parents?"
"No, Lisbeth never found them. They had already died. But, she did save Naz. She actually saved him." Jacob talked like he was telling himself something, like Daniel wasn't even there.
"Huh?" Daniel said.
"Naz had a heart attack, he stopped breathing, and Lisbeth brought him back after his students gave up on doing CPR. She just placed a hand over his heart and prayed, and even though he hadn't had a pulse for ten minutes, he woke right back up. It was... a real miracle. Or so says everyone who saw it. It happened before my family joined the church."
"Wow, I didn't know praying could bring somebody back from the dead. Maybe... maybe if I pray hard enough I can make Dad be alive again?" Daniel asked, hoping it was true even though he already knew it probably didn't work that way.
"Oh, Daniel. I'm sorry." Jacob's face pinched like he was in pain. "I don't think that would work. Lisbeth had only been able to bring someone back that one time, right after they died. But she's healed other people who were sick since then. But, it depends. She can't heal everyone."
"But, she has powers, like me." Daniel didn't think anyone else existed who was magic. "I bet she could heal Sean!"
Jacob blinked, staring at Daniel.
"No, I mean, I hadn't thought about that. But maybe if Sean is still in need of healing after he gets out of the hospital, she can help him. But, I think she could help you, since you both have a gift."
"Yeah." Daniel jumped up. "Let's go ask her now! She will totally understand if she has powers too. She can teach me how to control them so I won't hurt anyone ever again. And she can teach me how to heal Sean like she healed Naz. You think she could?"
Daniel bounded towards the car, Jacob hurrying after him. "Slow down. I don't know for sure. But God has shown me, since meeting you, that anything's possible."
Jacob smiled but still looked sad. Daniel stopped, and hugged him. "And then, once she teaches me, you can go back to be with your boyfriend."
"Maybe." Jacob pulled himself away, looking at the tower. "Once I know you're in safe hands."

Chapter Text
March 26th, 2017
Haven Point, Nevada
Jacob's home town looked pretty empty.
Real sleepy and quiet, with a little white houses that looked like Minecraft blocks. The only exception was a church with a big slanted roof that Jacob stopped the car beside.
Sean would hate it here. He only liked big towns like Seattle. This town didn't even look as big as Beaver Creek.
Jacob turned off the gas and told Daniel to grab his backpack and follow him. As they walked closer to the church, Daniel saw there was a little playground like the ones Dad took him to only a few years ago, before he got too big for the slides.
Several kids were playing, running up and sliding down the two small slides, or sitting on the swings nearby. Most were little kids, like six or under. But one skinny girl with brown hair looked his own age. She sat by herself on a small wood bench, her face scrunched up as she watched the little kids.
Jacob tapped him on the shoulder. "This way Dan—"
"Hackerman!"
A tall man with a sour face and tan stomped towards them from the church. He looked like an older version of Brett, the jerkface who had gotten so mad at him just for getting fake blood on his shirt, and who Sean pushed and then that cop had gotten involved.
If only he hadn't wanted to be a zombie for Halloween, then Dad would still be alive...and Sean...
"Nicolas?" Jacob took a step back. "I am here to see my family. I need to—"
"You have hell of a nerve to show up here like this." Nicolas looked like his face was gonna explode it was so red. "And who is this kid?"
"His name is Daniel." Jacob tried to smile but Daniel could tell he was nervous. "He needs help. That's why I—"
"Save it. The reverend put out a directive that you are to be brought right to her if you showed up here. Move it! Now. "
Nicolas grabbed Jacob's arm, starting to pull him towards the church door.
"But Daniel—"
"He can wait out here. Sarah Lee will keep an eye on him in the meantime."
Daniel started to protest but Jacob shook his head, pointing to an older girl on the side of the church.
"It's okay, Daniel. I won't be long. Go make friends with Sarah. She's nice."
Daniel was super annoyed but he nodded. Nicolas narrowed his eyes on him for a second and then the two of them went into the church. Adults always left him behind. Why?
It wasn't like he couldn't handle whatever they had to say. He'd seen a lot more than most kids. Noah probably couldn't even understand half the stuff Daniel had been through.
But none of that mattered to Nicolas or Jacob.
He was left outside, again. He looked at the playground. The older girl still hadn't noticed him. She looked bored, only half watching the little kids hooting like monkeys as they went down the slide backwards. She was mostly drawing stuff in the sand, like a picture.
Daniel walked over to Sarah Lee, and sat down on an oversized plastic horse across from her. The creaking of the playground equipment finally made her realize he existed.
"Oh!" Sarah Lee dropped her stick. "Hi, are you the Calvenash's kid? They said their son was too sick to play though."
"No. I just got here," Daniel said.
Sarah Lee smiled at him and Daniel thought it was the nicest thing he'd seen since Lyla and him hung out and she laughed when he stuck pop corn up his nose.
"Oh." Sarah Lee nodded like strange boys appearing at her church was a regular occurrence. "Are your parents joining Sacred Hope? We need more members."
All the sudden, Sarah coughed loudly, her face turning pale and her little hands covering her mouth. "Sorry. The wind we get here makes me cough."
"Yeah, it was really windy this morning." Daniel said. "My parents—my Dad didn't come with me though. I'm by myself."
"Oh." Sarah's big eyes widened. She looked worried. "What happened? Are you okay?"
Daniel shrugged, picking up the stick Sarah Lee had left in the sand and tracing something random. But soon, he was making a wolf. A big one, one that Sean had told him about in the stories when they were camping and living at that house. The big wolf who would always look after the little wolf.
Bet the big wolf never thought the little one would put him in a coma though.
"My parents both live here," Sarah Lee said after a pause.
"That must be nice." Daniel kept his attention on his drawing.
"Yeah. But, I miss my brother. He ran away from home." Sarah yelled at one of the kids to stop hogging the big slide. "Sorry. That's not the same as not having your mom and dad."
"No." Daniel looked up at her. She looked honestly sad. She had that look in her eyes that reminded Daniel of how Sean looked when he talked about something nice Dad did. "I wanted to go find my mom, but I haven't had a chance. And, I miss my brother too. We used to do a lot of fun stuff together."
"Me too." Sarah Lee said. "Is... umm is your brother not interested in getting the salvation of Christ?"
"Uh..." Daniel didn't understand what that meant. But he knew the word Christ, and that it was a Christian word. "No, he doesn't believe in Christianity. He says all the religions are made up."
"Oh." Sarah Lee shifted slightly closer to him, like she was suddenly cold. "Yeah, my brother, Jacob, he decided that not all the bible was true. That's why he left. Well, its kinda different than what mom told me but he said that—"
"Hold on! Jacob is your big brother?"
Sarah Lee nodded, looking confused.
"He is the person who brought me here. You must be the sister he was telling me about!"
Sarah Lee put her hand over her mouth. But she didn't respond to what Daniel said. Instead, she stood up and started towards the street.
"That's his car! Jacob! Jakey!"
"Sorry!" Daniel ran after her. "He, umm, the tall guy said he had to talk to your rever..."
"Our reverend." Sarah Lee looked back at him, folding her hands and looking like she was going to let a storm down on the pointy white church building. "Why does she get to see him before me? That's not fair! She's not family."
Daniel shook his head. He had no idea. Didn't Sarah Lee know better than him? Why was she asking him these questions?
Sarah Lee stomped past him, walking up to the door and yanking on the handle. But it was locked shut.
"Jacob!" she yelled. "I know you are in there."
"It's okay. The tall guy, Nicolas, said he would be out in a little—" Daniel put a hand on her arm, but she shoved him away.
"I haven't seen him in two years!" Sarah Lee banged on the locked door again. "It's not okay! You said you missed your brother too. Don't you understand?"
Daniel froze, his arm dropping limp. He totally understood. If Sean was in there, and if someone was keeping him from seeing Sean...Nothing would stop him from seeing his brother.
"Stand back. I can get the door open."
Sarah Lee looked confused, but took a few steps back. It was all that Daniel needed. He extended his arm out. He guided the thread of energy as it wrapped around the door frame.
The door vibrated and shook. As Daniel pulled his fingers in, the door swung wildly on its hinge, rocking violently until it came to a rest against the outside wall.
Suddenly, he was staring at Nicolas, who was standing in a little lobby area with tables and pamphlets. Nicolas' mouth dropped in shock as he looked at the now open door. Daniel could see Jacob and a tall woman standing together further inside the church, in a narrow aisle with lots of wooden row seats. Both of them were staring at him too.
"Kid?" Nicolas shouted. "What the hell—"
"Quiet, Nic." The tall woman with a dress that looked like the desert sand advanced towards them, with Jacob following behind. "You are Daniel, aren't you?"
"Yeah." Daniel nodded.
"Jakey!" Sarah Lee brushed past the older adults, squeezing Jacob between her narrow arms. "I missed you tons!"
"Sarah Lee! I missed you out on the road!" Jacob hugged her tightly.
Nicolas frowned but a funny look shot between him and the woman.
"Okay. Are you sure?" Nicolas asked.
"Of course I am. The spirit guides me, doesn't it?" The woman smiled at Daniel, extending an arm. "Jacob, go with Sarah Lee and rest. I would speak with this gifted boy."
"Okay." Jacob squeezed Daniel's shoulder. "You'll be safe with the reverend. I promise."
The siblings left, Sarah Lee already asking Jacob a hundred questions. The excited lady reverend waved Nicolas out too and soon, Daniel was left alone with her.
"Hi, Daniel. I'm Lisbeth. It's such a pleasure to meet you." She stepped forward. placing a hand on his shoulder. "The Lord brought you here, you know?"
"You mean, Naz?" Daniel had heard Grandma call him that too.
"No, what has Jacob been—Naz was just a servant of our Lord, God the Father, just as I am. You've been without his presence for a long time." Lisbeth brought her hand up to her mouth, like she wasn't sure what she wanted to say. If this was the lady who had brought someone back from the dead, why was she so surprised that he could open a door up?
"Can you heal my brother? He got hurt and he's in a coma and—" Daniel paused, trying not to ramble. She didn't look exactly like the woman in his dreams, but he hadn't been up close to her in the dream. "And I'm worried he might die."
"Oh, poor dear child." Lisbeth wrapped him into a hug that was too tight. Fortunately, she let go of him pretty fast. Then she guided him deeper into the church, and motioned for them to sit together on the wooden row seats.
Daniel didn't think they were very comfortable. Did people really sit in these for hours praying and singing like in the movies?
"Jacob told me you've...lost your family. And your poor father. Losing a parent's guidance at such an age. I am truly sorry."
"Umm. It's okay." Daniel didn't know what to say. He barely knew this woman.
Lisbeth nodded. "You are so strong, clearly that is why you have been blessed with the gift, as I was when I was very close to your age. Jacob must have told you about that."
"You mean...my powers?"
"Powers?" Lisbeth laughed. "That's a funny word for something that is a divine blessing. But I can see it hasn't always been a blessing for you, has it? It's caused you pain."
Lisbeth took his hand and looked at it like she could see something in it that he couldn't.
"Yeah. I tried to control it but sometimes it ends up hurting people. Like my brother. Can you make him wake up? He told me in a dream he'd find me, but he's in a coma. But he felt really real in the dream."
"Perhaps your spirit visited his? Well, that is another sign of your blessing if you can transcend your body during sleep. It means it will come true. Your brother will find you and he must want you to stay here safe with me until he wakes up."
"But..." Daniel pulled his hand back. "What if he doesn't wake up? Jacob said you made a guy who died of a heart attack wake back up. Can you go to the hospital if I tell you the name and try to heal him? I miss him so much and Jacob said you help people."
"Oh, child." Lisbeth clasped her hands together, looking at the big cross in front of them. "I would go now but for my flock. I am needed here to watch over them. God had called me here, and I cannot leave while so many are suffering at the haven we've created here. We must tend to our own garden before watering others."
"Oh," Daniel said. "You can't help me then."
"No! I can certainly help you. That is why the Lord brought you to my doorstep. I will not turn away a poor child in need. And when your brother comes, I will open my arms to him and heal any wounds he may yet have. I promise you that Daniel."
Daniel was confused. "But Sean is hurt now. He can't wait."
Lisbeth looked grumpy for a second but then she took a deep breath and smiled again.
"He told you he will find you, and he will. We will send our prayers for his swift recovery. And we will help him also by sharing with you the ways to use your blessing to help people. He will be so joyful when he comes and sees the works you may perform for the Lord's plan. I know he will."
"He did say a lot that I should only use my powers to help people. Like when I helped lift a heavy bookshelf that fell on my grandpa."
"See!" Lisbeth's eyes lit up. "You have the goodness within you. You just needed a mentor to show you the right path so you can always help others."
"Like the other families here?" Daniel asked. He always thought he could do more good things with his powers. Instead of breaking things and hurting people...
"Why that's the reason you were brought here, Daniel. To help our congregation. You'll stay with me at my house and then tomorrow I'll introduce you to all the wonderful people who make Haven Point our home."
"What about Jacob?"
"Oh, of course he can stay, too. He belongs with his eternal family. And your brother can stay when he finds you. We have plenty of space in our town and our doors are never locked. It's a wonderful, spiritual place. I had a dream like yours that I would found a community and when I arrived here. I knew this was the place. It was God's will."
"Like my brother getting better?"
"Yes, yes. Don't you listen?" Lisbeth's voice softened though. "Forgive me, you must be so tired. And hungry?"
Daniel nodded. He hadn't eaten much at the diner.
"Then come." Lisbeth extended her hand. "I can make us some dinner while you get settled into your new room. Do you like spaghetti?"
"Yeah. With garlic bread." Dad had always made the best garlic bread.
Lisbeth laughed as she led him out the church door. "I don't normally make that, but today is a celebration. The Lord has blessed us both. You can have whatever you want, even ice cream."
"Okay."
Daniel wanted to ask what flavors she had. But, he decided it was better not to annoy this friendly lady with too many questions. He had so many more important ones he was going to ask her about his powers.
And he couldn't wait to see her heal sick people. That was one story he remembered from Noah's colorful bible books. Jesus put his hands on them and they started walking again, feeling brand new. He just hoped she could do the same for Sean when he came.
"The reverend said you have a birthday coming up. The big one zero."
"Yep. It's April 11th." Daniel fidgeted a bit in his hard plastic chair.
It was just him and Nicolas in the trailer next to the church and he still wasn't sure about him. He hadn't yelled since the day they arrived but he never smiled either in the week since Daniel had arrived. Maybe he was sick with something too?
"That's an important year in a young man's life." Nicolas sat on the opposite end of a card table, glancing at his phone more than at Daniel. "It means you are leaving behind the little kid years and looking to be a man soon. That's why our reverend wanted me to check with you and see how you are doing."
"Fine." Daniel shrugged. It felt like this was one of those adult conversations where the teacher wanted him to say something specific. But, Daniel had no clue what it was.
"Look, I know we just met and you don't know me well, but you can be sure everyone at Sacred Hope just wants to help. You can feel safe around us here."
"Thanks." Daniel felt bored more than anything. He hoped this would be over soon so he could go draw with Sarah Lee. They had made a whole treasure map in the sand yesterday. "I am not worried about anything now, though. Except my brother."
"Trust in her words—the Lord will heal your brother." Nicolas leaned back in his chair, offering the first smile Daniel had seen. And it was a funny half-smile. "And until then, you need a male role model. Every boy needs one to help him learn how to navigate their way in this world. With all the changes you've been through you might be a little confused, especially after staying with Jacob."
"What are you talking about?" Daniel didn't understand. "Jacob didn't do anything bad. His boyfriend helped fix my arm."
Nicolaus made a grossed out face. "Maybe not, but that boy is confused about a lot of things. He needs some more time studying the scripture. Someone like me is a better role model. I've studied under the reverend for a long time now. You might say I am her most devoted disciple."
"Oh." Daniel didn't really understand a lot of those words. He'd just learned scripture meant, like, the pages in the bible. But there was also more to it than that?
"What I mean kid," Nicolaus rapped his fingers on the table, half glancing out the window, "is that I've been in your shoes and I understand better what you're going through."
"Really? Have—did you lose your brother and dad too? I mean, when you were my age."
"No, that's not what I am talking about." Nicolaus leaned forward. "I mean about having a tendency to violence. I was a troubled kid, and I was strong and big for my age, and found I out I could get my way by pushing others around."
Daniel nodded, although that didn't sound like anything like his childhood.
"That was my gift the Lord gave me," Nicolaus continued. "Granted, it wasn't as special as yours, but it still allowed me to get what I wanted by inflicting violence. I robbed people and intimidated them into giving me what I wanted. I fell into a bad crowd back in Salt Lake City, and it got worse from there, you understand?"
"Uh, you hurt more people?" Daniel felt a little nervous all the sudden.
"A robbery went bad, and we did more than hurt. I served time, and when I got out, I was lost, and didn't know how to be in the world without using my strength for violent ends. That's when Lisbeth found me. She believed in me, and she showed me a way to use my gift for peaceful ends. Like she'll show you."
"Oh." Daniel nodded, finally understanding. "I hurt people too with my pow—gift. I never wanted to, but it just kept happening."
"Right, kid," Nicolaus started, but his phone buzzed, and after a couple seconds he stood up, whispering to Daniel he'd be right back.
"Luke? She did what? When did this happen? Hold on, I am with someone." Nicolaus opened the door to the trailer and his voice faded off.
Daniel sat there, wishing he could go play with Sarah Lee now. He liked being here, sorta. He had his own room, and Lisbeth cooked dinner every night, even if it wasn't as good as Dad's. And she'd bought him his favorite cereal yesterday. But, it still didn't feel like home. Lisbeth only let him color or read, no electronics, so it was super quiet at night.
And when they prayed together, Daniel would always pray for Sean to get healed and it made him miss his big brother all over again. He hoped the reverend was right and he'd come here soon. He hadn't gotten a chance to talk to Jacob about it again since they arrived. He was always meeting new people or going to study, like he was at school again. Except for a weird school where there was only one subject.
But Lisbeth promised they'd start doing special study sessions soon, just him and her, and she'd teach him to use his gift for good. Like she had Nicolas. Daniel wondered if Nicolas had, like, super strength. Maybe everybody here had powers. He made a note in his mind to ask Sarah Lee what hers was.
Nicolas' voice got louder again, and the trailer door cracked open, but he was still on the phone.
"No, Luke, I told you that until you are willing to give up that lifestyle and follow our rules you can't stay here. No, you know I'm sorry about what happened and I hope you'll both find new jobs soon. But, that's final. I gotta go."
Nicolaus came back in, smiling between Daniel and the phone.
"Is everything…okay?" Daniel asked. It sounded like another adult problem.
"No, but it isn't our problem." Nicolas turned the phone over and put his hands together. "You see, some people continue on the path that differs from the one our Lord has set forth. And we can't do anything for them until their hearts are willing to repent and set on the path of righteousness. Like you and me, right buddy?"
"Uh, sure." Daniel nodded. "I want to do the right thing with my powers."
"Right, err gift, remember?" Nicolas had a strained smile on his lips. Daniel figured he must be worried about his friend, like Daniel was about Sean. Nicolas stood and patted him on the back and pointed to the playground. "That's enough for today. Why don't you go play with your friends and we'll talk soon, okay, young man?"
"Sure." Daniel busted out of his seat, feeling like he couldn't wait to get out of there. Even though Nicolas was being nice to him, Daniel could always tell when someone didn't really want to be friends.
But the reverend helped Nicolas control his powers; Daniel really hoped she could help him too. He didn't want to ever hurt Sean again when he came to live with them.
Chapter 6: A Kid Again
This story takes place between Episodes 3 and 4, and after the Parting Ways Ending, following closely to canon. It's part of my attempt to understand how the wolf brothers cope and move past the traumatic events that happen in the game, and ultimately find peace and happiness they so dearly deserve. Chapter Text
July 31st, 2017
Mesa, Arizona
4 Months after Daniel's arrival in Haven Point
"Danny, Danny! Did you clean out your side of the room? I have another boy moving in this afternoon and you know I have a thousand things to do this morning."
"Yes, Mrs. Peterson," Daniel called back at the foster lady.
He'd been up extra early this morning. One of the other boys that lived in Mrs. Peterson's house asked if it was because he was excited to see his grandparents. Daniel had just nodded. He was sorta excited, but that wasn't the reason.
He didn't want to explain to a seven year old that he kept having nightmares about the reverend who tried to kill his brother. He didn't want to admit that was why he slept with his night light on; the other boys would think he was childish for being scared of dreams.
Daniel just wished they would stop.
He could still hear Lisbeth's voice in his head, telling him how he needed her to protect and guide him back to the right path. How his destiny was to be an angel of God, but that the devil would keep using his powers for bad things if he didn't listen to Lisbeth.
Sean had said she couldn't hurt him anymore, but the nightmares were almost as bad as that last day in Haven Point. In his dreams, the church was always burning, and he couldn't find Sean or Mom. There was just Lisbeth who kept chasing him, her eyes as bright and scary as the fire. She kept yelling at him for destroying Christ' temple, like it had been his fault that she made him float those stupid candles around in a circle.
Mrs. Peterson shuffled into the boys' room, bringing a plastic bundle with papers and sat it on the end table, yelling out the side window at a couple other foster kids to stop playing with the hose and get to watering. She had a list of thousands of chores to do each week. Even worse than Lisbeth had.
"Now, if the nice lady from the agendy comes while I'm in the washroom, make sure you give her those papers, okay?" Mrs Peterson wiped her hands on her dress, looking out at the front window.
"I thought my grandparents were picking me up?" Daniel frowned at the stack of papers.
"Oh, don't worry. They are, Danny." Mrs. Peterson wouldn't stop calling him that once Daniel had told her it was what his real mom called him. "But that nice hispanic lady from the agency scheduled a talk with you before. Oh, look there she is now."
Daniel watched through the window as Ms. Flores stepped out of her black car. Mrs. Peterson swung open the door before Ms. Flores could make it off the sidewalk. "Hi Maria. Would you care for something to drink? Diet soda? Pellegrino? You know I don't keep anything caffeinated in this house."
"No, that's okay." Ms. Flores flashed her smile, holding up a plastic bottle. "I brought my water. May I come in?"
"Of course, and here are the papers. He wouldn't fill much out besides his name, I'm afraid. He's the most stubborn child."
"That's okay." Ms. Flores took the stack and placed it inside her briefcase.
Daniel looked away and went back to staring at the picture of Jesus on the wall like it was the most interesting thing in the world. At least, Mrs. Peterson decorated her house in interesting ways unlike at Lisbeth's where everything had been dull and boring.
"Daniel, how are you doing?" Ms. Flores said softly.
"Fine."
"Are you excited to see your grandparents again? I know they missed you very much."
Daniel shrugged, playing with the yo-yo Sean got him for Christmas. He'd held onto it since that day he jumped.
"Okay, Daniel. You don't have to talk to me." Ms. Flores sounded tired. "But if you don't it might be harder for me to help your brother out, you know? He could be in danger in Mexico."
"No, Sean's smart." Daniel looks up at her. "He was scared of you guys. Scared of the cops. He's a lot happier now in Mexico. I'm sure of it."
"Maybe. But, he could also be in trouble. He ripped through a big fence, and also somehow exploded the wall. If the Mexican police—yes they have police too. If they find bombs on him he could get in trouble. If we knew where he was planning on going, we could try to help him. Maybe convince him to come back to the US where it would be safer for him to work out the questions we have for him."
Daniel frowned. He hadn't thought about the fact that Mexico would have their own cops. Would they be mean and want to lock Sean up too? But Sean was Mexican so maybe they'd be nicer.
"Where was he planning to go after crossing, Daniel?"
"Puerto Lobos. I already told you," Daniel said. He felt bad that he had, but it had been an accident. Because they'd tricked him during their questions before. Somehow they already knew the name of that town.
"Okay." Ms. Flores sighed. "And how did Sean break apart the wall and fence? We were both there, Daniel. But, to be honest, I don't understand it all. How was your brother able to do that?"
"He just drove through it." Daniel shrugged. He wasn't going to say anything. This lady acted nice, but he knew she wanted to get Sean and take him back to jail. "I don't know why you keep wanting to know about Sean. He's not in the US anymore. You can't put him in jail."
"Maybe not. But if he does something bad in Mexico then—"
"He won't! Sean's not a bad person. He's my brother and I wish I could be in Mexico with him right now." Daniel put a hand over his face.
Nobody said anything for a minute. A couple kids spying on them by the entryway burst out laughing, but Mrs. Peterson shooed them away.
"Daniel, look at me." Maria waited for a long time, until Daniel finally put his hand down. "Why didn't you go with him, then? You can tell me the truth. I promise I am trying to help you, both of you."
"I—" Daniel remembered Sean's arm reaching for him, his shouting and confusion when Daniel jumped. The last time they got to see each other, and he hadn't even got to explain to Sean why. "I was just scared."
"Scared of what?" Ms. Flores looked through her papers. "You didn't answer any of these questions. I thought it might be easier to write it down. But, since you didn't, can you please tell me? Were you afraid your brother was going to do something bad? What was his plan for you guys?"
"To go to Puerto Lobos and live at our dad's house. That's it! That's all Sean wanted." It took all of Daniel's concentration not to let his powers start to show, he was getting so upset. "But you cops kept chasing us and locking him up. And it's not fair. It's not—"
Two loud knocks on the door interrupted them, and a second later, without waiting for Mrs. Peterson to answer it, Daniel's grandparent's burst in. Ms. Flores stood, a big surprise on her face.
Grandma glanced between him and Ms. Flores, and she looked madder than when she had caught Sean and him in mom's room.
"Ms. Flores!" Grandma pointed a finger at Ms. Flores. "How dare you upset my grandson like this. And after all he's been through."
"Daniel and I were just talking, Mrs. Reynolds." Ms. Flores looked at Daniel, who nodded but felt nervous with everyone's eyes on him now.
"Talking?" Grandma took a step towards her. "Is that why he looks like he's about to burst into tears?"
"Now, Claire. Let's—" Grandpa started, but Claire brushed his hand off.
"I see a cross on your necklace. Do you consider yourself a Christian woman?"
"Yes, but I don't see how—"
"When our children have suffered tragedy upon tragedy" —Grandma pointed to the picture of Jesus on the center of the wall— "our faith calls upon us to comfort and soothe them. Not interrogate them about matters that will only stir up more pain in their hearts. Don't you think my grandson has paid a high enough price for the sins of adults?"
Grandma turned and grabbed Daniel's hand, pulling him off the couch. "Come now, Daniel, we're leaving."
"Mrs. Reynolds." Ms. Flores raised her voice. "It's my faith that compels me to try and help resolve this situation for better. Daniel, please contact me if you remember anything about what happened at the border."
But Claire was already pulling him out the door, and Grandpa blocked it so Daniel couldn't see Ms. Flores anymore. Or Ms. Peterson. He was pretty happy he wouldn't have to again.
Grandma helped him put his stuff in the trunk. They sat in the car waiting for a moment, Grandma asking if he was too cold or hot.
"No, Grandma. I'm fine. I just miss Sean."
"I know you do, sweetie." Grandma turned back, rubbing his knee. She actually had tears in her eyes. "I miss him too. We both do. But, you're safe with us for now."
Grandpa got in the car and they pulled away.
"What did you say to her?" Claire asked Stephen, her voice lowering as if Daniel wouldn't be able to hear. "Nothing out of bounds, I hope."
"I was calmer than you, dear." Stephen started the engine. "I just made it clear that she will not be talking to our grandson without a lawyer present—if at all. Now, Daniel my boy." Stephen smiled at him from the rearview mirror. "It's a long drive back to Beaver Creek. I think we should stop for shakes? Does that sound good to you?"
Daniel knew they were just trying to distract him. Like sweets were all kids needed to be okay. But the food Mrs. Peterson served did suck.
"Yeah, I'd like that."
"Good, and tomorrow, we have something a lot more fun planned. Is it okay to tell him yet?"
"Well," Grandma smiled back at him. "I was going to wait until we stopped for lunch. But I think he has the right to know now that you brought it up."
"Know what?" Daniel wondered if there was something about Sean? Did he call Grandma? Did he already have a phone at his house in Puerto Lobos?
"We are going to have a little celebration for you tomorrow. With cakes and some toys you didn't get to open for Christmas."
"Oh, thanks." Daniel forced a smile. He didn't really care about Christmas presents that much anymore. It would be weird opening all his up if Sean didn't get to open his.
"And, your friend Chris got permission to come. Do you remember him? He couldn't stop talking about you after you left."
"Oh yeah!" Daniel smiled, wondering how he'd forgotten he'd get to see Chris again. "I have so much to tell him about our travels. The good stuff I mean."
"I know, sweetie. Chris is a good boy, just like you."
"Well, hold your horses back there and stay buckled up," Stephen said. "We have about seven and half hours to go."
That felt like forever. But, Daniel could wait. He'd waited for Sean longer in Haven Point. But he wondered: if he was going to live with his grandparents and Sean was in Mexico, would he ever see him again?
Daniel turned back and glanced out the window at the desert, feeling like he was moving in the wrong direction. But he knew Grandpa wouldn't turn the car and go to Puerto Lobos. He'd already asked him on the phone.
Everybody seemed to think Daniel would be better off in the USA. Everybody except Sean, who he'd left without even saying goodbye.
Daniel was surprised at how warm it was in Beaver Creek. He thought it was the kind of place that was always snowy, but Chris had been right in his letter. It was warm enough outside to go camping and fishing.
Daniel still hadn't seen Chris yet, but the party was only an hour from now. Grandma told him to be patient. It wouldn't be long. Grandma wouldn't let him go outside either. She didn't want him getting his new clothes dirty before the party.
So Daniel amused himself by watching the little fish in Stephen's aquarium. He could hear Grandma in the kitchen. She was putting frosting on his cake, but he wasn't allowed to go in and look. He'd have to get used to her rules again.
But after living with Mrs. Peterson and Lisbeth, Grandma didn't seem that strict.
Ding Dong.
The doorbell rang and Daniel froze. Would Chris still want to be friends? Would he be upset that Daniel left so suddenly—just like how he left Sean?
Daniel waited for a second as grandpa got the door. But it was not Chris. It was Stephen's brother and his grandkids, who grandpa said were his cousins.
The two kids—a girl and boy—ran into the living room.
"Happy birthday!" the girl said, who looked maybe four.
"It's not his birthday, sweetheart. It's his welcome home party." Grandma gave the girl and her little brother a hug, and introduced Daniel to Grandpa's brother—his great uncle.
They all sat down in the living room and Stephen got out plastic boxes for the kids to play with. Daniel played with the little kids for a while, but they were acting too stupid, just knocking all the blocks over and not building anything.
Grandpa said it would be nice to meet new family, but his cousins were too little. And Stephen's brother and his wife, his new aunt and uncle, were old like his grandparents.
Grandma brought out snacks and soda and they put on Hawt Dawg Man because they knew Daniel used to like it. The little kids laughed at him and got in front of the TV, but Daniel wasn't really watching it anyway. Instead, his eyes were focused on the clock. It was 3:30. His party started half an hour ago.
Chris definitely should have been here by now. Maybe he decided not to come. Maybe he didn't want to make friends with someone who might disappear again. Maybe Daniel won't have any friends here after all.
After the show ended, Grandma brought out cake and they all gathered around.
"How do you like it, Daniel? Did I get close?" Grandma asked, pointing to the image of Hawt Dawg man in red frosting. His eyes were too big and he was missing some details, but Daniel nodded anyway.
"Yeah, thanks Grandma."
How could he tell her that he was not a little kid anymore? Hawt Dawg Man was for innocent kids who didn't know how hard it was to really use their powers for good. They thought it was so easy—just squirt mustard and all the bad guys go away. The show never said that more baddies just keep coming back. That they would keep trying to get his brother. And no matter how careful he was using his powers, his brother was always at risk of being hurt because of him.
"We have ice cream to go with it, Daniel," Stephen said. "But, first we want you to know how much we love you and how happy we are to have you in our home again. I know you have been through some tough stuff. But, you made it through and we hope that living here, you will only need to worry about being a kid again and doing your homework. Oh, and remembering to put your dirty socks in the laundry to help your Grandma out."
Stephen winked at Claire.
"I am never going to stop worrying about Sean," Daniel said quietly. "I hope he's doing okay in Mexico now."
"Daniel—" Claire started, but there was another ring at the doorbell.
Daniel jumped up and raced to the door, too excited to worry now. He yanked it open and there was Chris and his dad, standing on the front steps.
"Hey." Chris smiled like he was nervous. He was holding a small rectangular box. "S-sorry we're late to your party."
"That's my fault." Chris' dad, Charles, smiled at him. He looked different. He'd shaved but that wasn't it. His skin didn't look so ugly and gray. "I was running late from a meeting. Chris, why don't you give Daniel the present you picked out for him."
Chris handed over the rectangular box shyly, not exactly looking at Daniel. "It's nothing big."
"Thanks. You didn't have to get me anything."
Chris shrugged and Daniel tore open the present. It was a blue cape, with a picture of a wolf on the back. "I thought if you were moving back you'd need your own cape to keep up with me."
"Superwolf and Captain Spirit!" Daniel yelled and squeezed Chris into a hug. "Thanks! I love it."
"You're welcome." Chris looked happy again.
"You wanna come in? Grandma made cake and there's ice cream."
"Sure!" Chris followed Daniel into the living room.
Grandma set them up with paper plates on the kitchen counter with a large serving of cake and ice cream for both of them.
"That way your cousins won't complain I gave you both a little more," Claire whispered, and left them alone.
"Wow, I can't believe you're going to be living here again. We are going to have so much fun. Did you get my letter?"
"Yeah," Daniel said between bites of cake. "You and your dad went camping?"
"Three times. There is a really nice place not too far from here with a waterfall and a swimming lake that's not cold. Dad even taught me how to fish, though I didn't catch anything yet."
"That's so cool." Daniel wondered if it was the same place Sean took him camping that one time, where there was a cave and a river. "I know a good camping spot too."
"Oh, really? It's probably not close by though." Chris quickly added. "But, I already talked to Dad and he said if your grandparents give you permission, you can totally come camping with us next time we go. We still have another month where the weather will be nice."
"I'm totally down!" Daniel said. "Last time I went camping was at the Grand Canyon. Have you ever been there?"
"No." Chris shook his head, his eyes growing wide.
"Sean took me and he taught me how to find all the constellations in the sky. And the planets and all the ones that match your star sign. Mine is kinda boring, but Sean's is really cool. It looks like a lion leaping through the air. Well, sort of. Sean said the way the stars are connected is like how we are still connected even if we aren't together. Like if I look up at the stars at night, Sean might be looking at the same ones."
"Oh. That's neat. I don't know much about stars." Chris said, but his voice sounded funny. He licked his lips and took a drink of milk, his eyes going to the Hawt Dawg man show.
"What's wrong?" Daniel asked, grabbing Chris' hand.
"Umm, nothing really," Chris said, but Daniel could tell something was off.
"Is it about your dad?" Daniel asked. "But, he doesn't look…sick now."
"No, Dad's good. He's doing a lot better actually. He's going to these meetings where people are helping him." But Chris still sounded kinda sad.
"You just sound like how I did when I lied to you about my powers. Like you are keeping something from me." Daniel frowned.
"Umm, can we go play outside?" Chris asked.
Daniel had to change out of his nice shirt, but Grandma let him. He met Chris out in his backyard, throwing rocks at pasta cans.
"They are harder to balance than beer bottles, but Dad doesn't have those around anymore."
"Oh," Daniel said. Chris handed him a rock, and he missed a couple times before taking a can down.
"Rockin'. You didn't even have to use your powers."
"No, I try not to use them without a good reason now. Sean taught me to be smart about them."
Chris' face got that look on it again, like something was wrong.
"What is it? You do know something about Sean? My grandparents are acting like they haven't heard anything from him. But, I know Sean would have called and asked about me by now."
"You don't know anything about what happened to Sean in Mexico?"
"No, he was going to go to Puerto Lobos, but Ms. Peterson—my foster mom—and Ms. Flores and Grandma and Grandpa won't tell me anything about if he's got there yet."
Chris shook his head. "I'm really not supposed to say anything. Dad told me you would just worry."
"Chris!" Daniel grabbed his arm until Chris stopped staring at the rocks. "You are my best friend. You have to tell me if you know anything about my brother. I would do the same for you."
"I know." Chris bit his lip. "Promise you won't say anything? Not even to your grandparents?"
Daniel nodded. Chris sat down on the log and Daniel joined him. He looked so upset, almost like he was about to cry.
"I don't know, this is just what I overheard my dad talking about it with Claire, and then he told me to be quiet about it….But, somewhere on the road Sean got into a car crash."
"What?" Daniel couldn't believe it. "No way. Sean's a great driver! He drove us all the way to the border."
"Well, I don't know. I guess they found his car turned over on the side of the road, but Sean wasn't inside. They don't know what happened to him after that. He's….missing."
"Missing? But is he hurt? Did he have to go to the hospital again?"
Chris shook his head. "I'm sorry. That's all I know. I shouldn't have said any—"
"No! No!" Daniel picked up a rock and hurled it at the cans with all his power. The whole pyramid came crashing down. "I should have never left him. I could have kept the car from getting into a crash."
Chris looked at him wide eyed. "But, it's not your fault. It's an accident—"
"Shut up! My brother is missing! He could be dead and no one even wanted to tell me!" Daniel ran off back towards the house, ignoring Chris yelling for him to come back.
Claire was inside washing up dishes. "Already done playing? Remember shoes off in this—"
"You lied! You are a liar! Sean was in a car wreck!" Daniel yelled. "We need to go back and find him! He could be hurt. He needs our help!"
The whole house started shaking, and Stephen, who was coming through the hallway, tripped.
"Daniel! Stop it! Whatever you are doing, stop it right now," Claire said.
Daniel gasped, looking at his grandpa on the floor. He couldn't do anything right. He couldn't use his powers for good. All they did was mess up things. If he hadn't used them in the first place, then that cop wouldn't be dead. Then Sean wouldn't have had to run away. He would have never needed to go to Mexico. And he wouldn't have crashed...
Daniel collapsed on the floor, crying and crying. His grandparents held him, trying to tell him everything was going to be alright. But, he knew it wouldn't be. It was all just another lie, to cover up how bad he was. He wasn't a superhero. He was a bad guy. One who kept hurting his brother.
And now he might be dead because of Daniel—again.

Chapter Text
"Daniel? I know you are here somewhere. Why don't you come out? It's time for your lessons…"
"Never," Daniel whispered to himself, moving back another couple rows of benches. The church was a lot bigger somehow. It had so many rows of seats, and no matter how far Daniel crawled, he still wasn't any closer to the back doors.
"There's no reason to be afraid, child. I just want to teach you how to use your gift." Lisbeth's voice was extra loud, and every time he peeked his head up, he could see her eyes searching for him. "Ahh there you are!"
Crap, she sees me.
Daniel gave up hiding and jumped into the aisle, running for the door. But Lisbeth was suddenly there, blocking his path. Daniel raised his hand to push her aside like he did before, but his hand was frozen, like it was stuck in midair.
"Ah ah. You can't leave until you learn how to use your gift for good." Lisbeth looked at him the sad way she always did when she was lecturing him about something wrong that he did. "You don't want to hurt anyone accidently, do you?"
"You didn't teach me to use them for good. You just wanted me to show off for your church!"
"Don't speak like that to your true mother." Lisbeth grabbed his hand, slapping his face with her other hand. Her hand was so strong and sharp, and it felt like she was squeezing his wrist off. "Or I won't heal your brother when he comes to live with us."
"You're a liar. You weren't even the one I was supposed to find in the desert. That was my real mom!" Daniel tried to break free but her hand was crazy strong. "And you were never going to heal Sean! You told Nicolas to shoot him. You told him to shoot my brother!"
"You must be mistaken. I am a healer. I was sent by the Lord to heal the disease of pride and decadence that has infected this world," Lisbeth said, her eyes glowing yellow. "Shooting your brother would have taken the rot out of his troubled mind. He was a bad influence on you. Getting you involved in drugs and robbing people. A quick death would have been a better fate than he deserves, for being a murderer."
"He never killed anyone. That was me! I was the one who killed that cop!" Daniel jerked his hand free, but instead of pushing Lisbeth through the door, he collapsed on the ground, just wanting everything to stop. For it all to be over.
"Go ahead and do whatever you want to me. I am the one who is responsible for my Dad and brother being dead. I am the bad guy. I'm the who should be in jail—"
"Never!" An angry, familiar voice made Daniel look up. "Get away from him. Now."
"What in heaven's name—you can't be here." Lisbeth raised her gun up but Sean was too fast.
Ducking and dodging like a sly wolf, Sean evaded her shots and held up a...rubber eraser? Lisbeth froze, and the gun disappeared from her hand.
"You really are...it doesn't matter." Lisbeth took a step back, putting her hand out like she could block their path, but Sean just somehow, erased the walls of the church.
"You are a lost soul, Sean. You can't save him. Only I can. Look what harm you already caused him." She turned towards Daniel. "Only I know what purpose God has ordained him for. You don't understand how important he is. Without him, the whole world will soon—"
"I understand exactly what you want him for," Sean moved his other arm over Daniel protectively. "And you'll never touch my brother again."
Lisbeth looked down at Daniel, a weird smile on her face. "I'll find you again, my little ang—"
"Never!" Sean jumped in front, moving faster than Daniel could imagine, and everything disappeared.
Then, the whole world was white and empty, except his brother kneeling over him.
"Daniel?" Sean whispered, but Daniel didn't look him in the eyes. He knew it was just another ghost. Sean wasn't actually here. He was probably dead and Daniel was all alone. Daniel didn't protect him this time. He barely saved him in time when Lisbeth tried to kill him. He didn't even deserve to be Sean's brother.
"Daniel, can you hear me? Enano ." Sean's voice was quiet but serious.
Daniel turned on his side and he saw his brother, but he looked funny, sunken somehow, or maybe Daniel was on a platform.
But it looked just like Sean, with his eye patch and a shirt with a robot and funny eyes on it. The one mom gave him as an early birthday present. He was bent over at the waist, his hand touching Daniel's arm.
"Daniel, can you hear me?"
"Sean, it's really you? What are you doing? What are we doing back in the desert?"
"I'm not." Sean had a funny expression on his face. "Don't freak, but I am not actually here. This is a dream."
"Oh." Daniel felt funny, all the sudden things felt off, and Sean started to recede. Sean's arm grabbed him harder, but it felt less real.
"Wait! Daniel, listen!" Sean's features were fading. "You're in danger. I am in your room, and I see something. There's someone jiggling the window. Someone's trying to break in. Wake up and go get Stephen! Use your powers carefully, okay."
"But, Sean. You're just a ghost like Dad, and I don't want to use my powers. All I do is get people hurt. You were wrong. I am a monster."
"No, Daniel!" Sean grabbed him and turned to him. He could see tears in Sean's eye, and Sean looked—felt real now. "Don't break your promise to me, okay little cub?"
"Wha—"
"You promised back in Away, to forgive yourself, no matter what."
Daniel shook his head. "I tried, but—"
"I kept mine to you!" Sean shouted, his grip getting weaker every second. "I told the truth no matter how hard it was. Now, I need you to be strong too. I need you to fight! Fight for me, Daniel! I can't lose you. Now wake up!"
"But, no! Sean don't! Is it really you?"
Daniel tried to latch on to Sean's arm, but then his brother wasn't there-

Chapter Text
August 2nd, 2017
Beaver Creek, Oregon
Daniel sat up with a start, blinking into the darkness. Sean had sounded so real. But that had to be a nightm—
A weird, metal sound, like something clicking, came from the other side of the room. Daniel noticed a shadow, someone wearing a hood, was at the window, prying it open.
His heart beating, Daniel slipped down and crawled under the bed. Sean told him to go get Stephen, but Daniel sensed that it was too late. The person was already pushing the window open, and then their head was popping through and they were starting to climb inside.
Daniel scooted further back under the bed, testing his powers. Yes, they still worked. He was able to make the toy car move beside him. He concentrated on the person's legs as he started to roam over his bedroom, cursing.
"Shit, where is the little fucker?" Daniel recognized their voice, and it felt like his nightmare was coming true. "She said he wouldn't wake up."
Daniel watched as their feet moved away to the far wall, and they flicked a light on. He still had the same sour face as when Daniel met him. And when he bent to look in Daniel's closet, he could see a gun holster attached to the belt on his khaki pants. He was holding a rope and bag in his other hand.
Daniel knew he had only another couple seconds before the bad guy started searching the rest of the house, and that his grandparents were in danger.
But what if he did the wrong thing? Last time he used his powers on a guy with a gun, things didn't go so well. Daniel hadn't realized Merrill had a second gun he could use and then he shot him with it, and everybody he got hurt cause he'd unleashed that tornado in the room.
What if he was just too stupid to smartly use his powers? He wasn't cut out to be a superhero. He wasn't like Sean.
But, then he heard the bedroom door open and watched as the hooded man started down the corridor.
Daniel had to do something. But he didn't want anyone to get hurt. He might wake up his grandparents and then—
Daniel paused, thinking about that moment at the border, when Sean had said they would cross. Daniel had been so afraid—how could he keep them both safe with all the cops and guns? But then he remembered something from his lessons with Lisbeth. When she had taken him way out in the desert in a big sandstorm. He hadn't wanted to get out of the car, he could barely see anything. But she had been certain he could do this, and told him how he needed to grow his powers, so he could do more good.
She'd had him concentrate not on moving the sand itself, but on preventing the grains from hitting him and her. He'd never done anything like it before, but Lisbeth had been so confident that he could do it. He could still hear her voice in his head.
Call down the shield, child! Ask the Lord to throw His cloak around us! Keep us safe from all harm! Angel Daniel, bring us His cloak! Concentrate, child!
And Daniel had. He'd closed his eyes and focused on the energy all around them. Usually, he interacted with it only in short bursts, using it to move things here or there.
But, there was more he could do.
He could see it now, with his eyes closed, the waves of energy, ebbing and flowing in the air. All he had to do was pull the waves together, wrap them around them. And the sand scratching his arms stopped. And in that little space with Lisbeth, it was calm and clear.
And if that force field could keep things out….
Nicolas turned from the stairs, and went into the bathroom. He knocked something off, probably Grandpa's medicine, and suddenly, a loud clanking filled the air.
"Fuck!" Nicolas mumbled, and Daniel heard Claire's voice, like an alarm ringing into the air to her husband.
Stephen came out into the hall just as Nicolas exited the bathroom.
"What in the hell—" Stephen started.
"Where's the boy?" Nicolas brandished his gun. "I know he's in here."
Daniel had to act now. Nicolas still had his back to him.
"No, hold on," Grandpa was saying. "I don't what your purpose is in my—"
Daniel focused on the waves of energy just beyond Nicolas, strengthening them and pulling the waves together until the usually thin and separate strands grew denser and denser, like a wall. He started to bring them together tighter and tighter around Nicolas, trapping him in it without him even knowing.
"He owes me. That kid is a bad seed. And he's gonna pay—"
Claire burst into the hallway, holding up a bottle of pepper spray. "You won't go anywhere near—"
"Grandma! No!" Daniel shouted. He hadn't counted on his Grandma doing something like that. "Don't spray."
Nicolas turned, smiling at Daniel. "You're too scared now, huh? Without your brother, you can't do anything. Tell your grandparents to go back in your room, and I won't shoot them. You can come with me and I'll take you back where you belong."
Daniel kept his arm steady, keeping the field of energy steady, just beyond Nicolas' skin.
"I am not going anywhere with you. Don't move or you'll regret it." Daniel said. "Grandpa, call the cops."
"We'll do this the hard way then." Nicolas pointed the gun at Daniel's arm, and fired.
Claire screamed but Nicolas' scream was even louder as the bullet hit the field and ricocheted right into Nicolas' own leg. He fell into Daniel's force field, writhing and screaming, the gun dropping harmlessly to the ground.
Daniel pushed the field tight around him now, lowering him so he was pinned to the hard floor, cursing and screaming but not able to move. Not able to hurt anyone anymore.
Stephen grabbed the gun and got to Daniel. "It's okay. Are you okay?"
"He came through my window. Must have had a ladder." Daniel pointed to him.
Stephen nodded and took the gun, and yelled again for Claire to call 9-1-1. He motioned for Daniel to stay back.
"Don't worry, Grandpa, he can't move. I froze him."
"Okay." Stephen nodded, his eyes wide. "Let me get some rope so we can make sure."
Daniel obeyed, but still watched, keeping ready for the bad guy in case he tried anything with his grandpa. Grandpa tied his legs and feet together, and Nicolas passed out. Probably because he couldn't breathe well from the force field. Daniel let him go, feeling so tired all the sudden.
Claire came out of the room a minute later, her hand going to her mouth. "Oh heavens. Is he dead?"
"No, just passed out from blood loss, it seems." Still Stephen kept the gun trained on him.
Claire went over to Daniel and wrapped her arms around him. "Thank goodness you are okay. The cops are coming. I don't understand. We've never had a burglar target our home before."
"I'm fine grandma. But, I'm the reason he's here."
"What?" Claire frowned.
"Yeah," Daniel said. "He worked for the lady from the bad church, who tried to kill Sean. She wasn't happy that we left. He was probably going to take me back there, but Sean woke me up in time."
"Oh." Claire blinked. "Sweet heart, I'm just so glad you are okay. You must have used your…blessing."
"No." Daniel shook his head. "Sean's right. It's just my powers. They can be used for bad and good."
Claire didn't have anything to say about that. They waited outside until the police came, and hauled Nicolas away in an ambulance. Daniel had to go to the police station with his grandparents and answer questions about what happened.
But he and Grandpa would only say that Nicolas' gun backfired when he tried and failed to kidnap him. In the next room though, Daniel could hear Nicolas yelling, something about how his minister had gotten locked up all because of Daniel. Like it was Daniel's fault she was in jail.
But, the cops didn't want to put Daniel in jail, just like when he gave himself up at the border. No one seemed to think that he did anything wrong. He had to explain everything that happened at the church to his grandparents on the way home.
After that, Grandma told him that the lady wasn't in jail because of him, but because she had been stealing money and using it for the wrong things. "Fraudulence," she had said. Daniel didn't really understand it; he was just happy that they were both locked up now. Lisbeth and Nicolas were the real ones who should be in jail, not his brother.
When they finally got home, it was super late and Claire had brought him into their room so he wouldn't have to sleep alone. She told him not to worry, to try and get some sleep before she put her funny eye mask on.
But Daniel couldn't stop thinking about that dream. It had felt like every other nightmare he'd had since leaving the church. Except for Sean being there. Had Sean really….visited him from a dream?
And where was Sean now? Daniel had thought Sean would be better off in Mexico by himself. But now all he wanted was to see his brother, talk to him again, and know if he was okay. He missed him so much.
He hugged his stupid Hawt Dawg Man pillow tighter to his chest, trying really hard not to worry.

Chapter Text
August 3rd, 2017
Beaver Creek, Oregon
"Daniel?" Stephen cleared his throat. "Where are you going?"
Daniel let go of the doorknob, dropping his gaze so he didn't have to look Stephen in the eye. He had waited a couple hours until he was sure they were both asleep. It was like 5 AM now.
"I'm usually up this time of day anyways." Stephen smiled like he was sorry about it. "It happens when you get older. But you, you're not trying to run off again, are you?"
"No…" Daniel trailed off because he knew it was obvious he was. "I'm sorry, Grandpa. I—it's my fault that Nicolas was here. My powers keep causing all these bad things to happen. I'm putting you in danger if I stay here, like I did with Sean."
"Hmmmm." Stephen looked at the backpack on Daniel's back and out at the dark sky through the windows. "So you're going to run off without saying anything? Where do you plan on going?"
Daniel shrugged. He wanted to find Sean and make sure he was okay., but he had no idea where he was. And he wasn't sure if it would be better to just go live by himself somewhere, like that cabin they stayed in before coming to Beaver Creek. Out there in the forest, he would be away from everyone so nobody could get hurt by his powers.
But Grandpa wouldn't like that answer.
"Just….away."
"You know, it will hurt us a lot more if you leave now. We can handle whatever danger comes our way, together. Just like we did last night. You might not realize it, but your presence has already been a blessing to us, to me , my grandson. Let's go to the back. I have something to show you."
"Huh?" But Daniel followed his grandpa back through the house and out the sliding glass door. Stephen turned on the porch light and pointed to a wooden thing in the yard that hadn't been there before. It was in the shape of a circle, with an arched roof and a big swing under it and lots of flowers and a little foundation by it.
"Claire's reading spot. She always wanted a gazebo, and she'd been asking me for years." Stephen smiled. "Still have to weatherproof the wood before winter, but it's almost done. Thanks to you."
Daniel frowned. He didn't understand. "I didn't help you build it."
In response, Stephen tapped his leg. "No, but if you hadn't lifted that bookcase off my legs, I might not be walking right now. Your…ability kept them intact."
"Oh." Daniel had almost forgotten about that. That had been right before they had to go.
Stephen sat down on the swing and gave Daniel a funny look. "You know, before you came, I'd been just going through the motions, kinda in a fog, do you understand?"
Daniel nodded even though he didn't really.
"It's been tough since we lost contact with your mother, and Claire has her church friends and her books, and I have my trains, but they lost the spark that it used to have. And then I retired and some of my pals fro work moved away and it was hard to find meaning in life. But when you and Sean came, it was like we had a new purpose. Like God had given us a purpose—to keep you boys safe."
Stephen rubbed his hands together. It was funny how his Grandpa's skin looked like wavy paper, like the kind you use to stuff boxes.
"So it was really hard, especially on your grandmother, when you two left—had to leave. But what you did, in that moment when you saved me, it awakened something I thought lost, Daniel. A desire to do more than exist, to actually try to live again. You probably didn't notice some of the other changes around the house—"
"Not really." Daniel shook his head.
"Of course, but I've refinished the kitchen cabinets and turned your mother's room into something quite different. I think you'll like to take a look. And I also made this gazebo for Claire. I found a passion again for the hobbies I used to love. Because I knew that God had given me a second chance, through you, to live life to its fullest."
"I just didn't want you to get hurt." Daniel shrugged. He felt…embarrassed a little. Lifting the bookcase had been so easy compared to some of the stuff he'd done since then.
"And that's—" Stephen wagged his finger "—that's my point, Danny. Your powers aren't good or bad. They are just an ability that you have, which you choose everyday whether to use them and for what purpose. I know you weren't raised in the same church that we go to, but you do believe in God, I think?"
"Yes." Daniel nodded. He still did, even after... "I think so. But the lady who was going to kill Sean, she told me God gave me those powers to spread her message. That I was God's Angel, but I needed to make up for my mistakes. She turned out to be pretty evil, but it's true I wasn't using my powers for good. I tried to break into a safe, and Finn and Sean got hurt. So I don't know what God was doing giving me these powers."
"Well, your brother should have exercised better judgment on that one. But, he's just a kid too. And the mistakes you make, if you do believe in God, then you know that the whole point of Christainity is that God loves you so much he'll forgive you for your mistakes, as long as you try to do better the next time."
Stephen placed a hand on Daniel's shoulder, squeezing it.
"And I think with the ability you have there, he's giving you the chance to decide how to use those powers. Your grandmother called what you did a blessing, and it was, but the ability you have is just like anything else."
Stephen laughed at Daniel's confused expression.
"It is. It's much more unique than most, but I have the ability to use my hands to hurt people, hurt those I care about, or use them to create things, like this." Stephen put his hand on the wood of the swing. "Something that brings joy into people's lives. That is the freedom and responsibility God gives us. And that's the same for you Daniel. And no matter what you do decide to do with your powers, you aren't hurting any of us just by having them. That is out of your hands. Do you understand?"
"I guess so." Daniel nodded, feeling a little better. The sun was coming up through the trees and it lit the tree house. Daniel remembered something else from his last time here- when Chris fell and Daniel saved him. Chris could have gotten hurt that day, but Daniel stopped it, just like with Grandpa.
Maybe his powers weren't so bad after all.
Daniel yawned. "I think I'm ready for bed. I didn't sleep much last night."
"You go on, I'm going to watch the sunrise for a little bit. I only have so many left to enjoy," Stephen said.
But Daniel didn't go straight to bed. He made a detour to the kitchen because Grandma had told him he could have a slice of the leftover cake for being so brave. That sounded like a great breakfast.
He was pouring himself a glass of chocolate milk to go with it when the phone rang. Daniel didn't normally answer it, and it was funny cause it was still so early in the morning. But he picked it up as soon as he read the caller ID on it.
International Caller. That could only mean one thing.
"Sean?"
"Daniel! You're okay. I've been worried sick. I called like ten times." It was actually his brother on the other end of the line.
"Oh my god Sean! You're alive! I knew it! You came to me in a dream, just like you did before!"
"Before?" Sean said.
"Yeah, when you were in a coma, and I was lost in the woods, and you said you were going to find me. And you did!"
"Oh wow. I didn't realize that was part of this too." Sean sounded surprised.
"But, so it was really you in the dream? You can visit people in your dreams?"
"I-I think so. It's sounds crazy—"
"No, it's not! It's super cool. It's like the old man Jacob told me about. He used to visit people in their dreams and heal them."
"Old man?" Sean said. "Jacob never mentioned that story to me."
"Oh, it was when you were in a coma, and he took me to the desert to visit the old man's temple to pray for you to get better and talk to you." Daniel waited for Sean to respond, but there was just silence on the phone. "But anyway, it's so cool we both have superpowers! Are we going to hang out in our dreams every night? Do fun stuff?"
"Maybe, I'm still figuring out exactly how this works. But, first are you okay? You still haven't told me about what happened. I saw someone trying to break in."
"Oh yeah. You were right." Daniel was so super excited he'd almost forgotten about Nicolas. "I woke up right in time to stop Nicolas from kidnapping me."
"Kidnapping—"
"Yeah, he wanted to take me back to Lisbeth. But I froze him so he couldn't hurt anybody and then Grandpa tied him up and he's in jail now. The cops said they will charge him for attempted kidnapping, and he's wanted for other charges."
"Shit, Daniel. I should have been there to stop him. I'm so sorry. Can you ever forgive me for not giving myself up at the border?"
"What? What are you talking about, Sean?" Daniel felt almost like he was going to cry. "I am the one who left you. I know you probably hate me for it."
"Hate you?" Sean's voice got serious again. "Did you forget everything I told you for the past nine months? I love you, always. We're brothers, whether we are together or apart, we'll never stop being brothers, okay?"
Daniel didn't know what happened, but all the sudden tears started rolling down his eyes and he couldn't say anything. He had thought for sure Sean was going to be super upset with him. He had deserved it, for leaving him back there. And then when he heard about the accident, he was so worried he'd never get a chance to apologize. To explain…
And now Sean was acting like it didn't even matter. Like it was okay.
"Daniel?" Sean's voice dropped. "You still there?"
"I miss you much. I-" Daniel swallowed hard. "I'm…I'm sorry. I knew that if I didn't turn myself in, the cops would keep chasing you. I didn't want you to be put in prison because of me."
There was a long stretch of silence, and then Daniel could hear Sean making funny noises. He slowly realized his brother was crying too.
"I am so sorry you felt like you had to do that. I should have turned myself in. You must have been so scared when I started driving."
"Yeah, I was a little. I just-" Daniel stopped, fumbling his next words. "I didn't want….I am just glad you are okay."
There was a long moment of silence, and when Sean spoke again, his voice was shaky.
"I can't believe I put you through that. I know it's so selfish, but I just wanted us to be together. I thought that was what you wanted, too. I wish you were here with me, enano . It's already been a month since I've seen you and it feels like forever. I'll make sure never to put you in that situation again. I promise."
"I know." Daniel stopped himself from telling Sean he wanted to live with him too, even though he really, really did.
But, if the cops were still after him, then would it just cause more trouble for Sean? Was Ms. Flores right about the Mexican cops being mad at him too?
Daniel had really believed they'd stop looking for Sean once he jumped. And that someone would eventually get hurt. But if the cops were going to hunt Sean either way, wouldn't it be better to be there to protect him, like he had his grandparents?
"Ms. Flores was asking me questions, Sean. She wanted to know where you were. I told her about Puerto Lobos accidently. I'm sorry!" Daniel said, his turn for his voice to get shaky.
"It's okay. She already found out about Puerto Lobos from my journal and going through my backpack in the hospital."
"Oh." Daniel felt relieved, but he had to ask. "Are they still looking for you now? Are the Mexican cops trying to arrest you or hurt you or—"
"No, I am okay. I…I am staying with some friends." Sean's voice got serious. "Don't worry about me, Daniel. I am being honest. I am safe right now."
"Good." Daniel said. "I believe you." And he did. They didn't keep secrets anymore.
"But, it's not actually safe yet for you to come here. I am working on that and as soon as I sort things out I am going to apply to be your guardian, like officially. But, I have this really nice couple who is helping me understand all the legal stuff. They own chickens. You'd love to see them, Daniel."
"Aww, you have to send me pictures, until…until I can visit."
"Daniel!" Claire was there in her bathrobes. "Who are you talking to?"
"Sean, Grandma is here. Looks like she wants to talk to you." Daniel looked at the surprise on Grandma's face. But she didn't take the phone away. Instead she nodded for him to continue.
"Okay, enano . You still remember your password to your email?"
"HawtDawg2007!"
"Haha, good. Don't say it too loud. I'll send you some pictures. I love you and I am so glad you are okay. You can call this number anytime—"
Claire grabbed the phone from Daniel.
"Sean, is this really you? Thank God you are okay. Where are you? You know the authorities are still looking for you….Asylum? Well, yes, I got an email from that girl who called our house about that, but we weren't sure if it was some kind of scam….I just…I just don't know. Part of the custody agreement is that Daniel doesn't have contact with you. I am so sorry, but we should probably only talk through my lawyer for right now, at least until things get sorted. Sean—No, Sean listen to me. I am sorry. We are certainly not trying to take Daniel away from you or keep you from having a relationship with your brother. But, this is a delicate time. We just were granted custody two days ago and this could jeopardize Daniel's placement with us. You have to….yes I understand how much you love and miss him. I miss you too. You don't know how much joy it brings me to know you are alive. Then yes, I do want that but—"
Daniel moved away, slumping onto the couch and watching Claire argue with his brother. She could say whatever she wanted about not talking to him, but Daniel knew it didn't matter.
Sean was alive, and he didn't hate him. And they could talk anytime they wanted in Daniel's dreams now. Daniel smiled and closed his eyes.
Chapter 10: Just Like My Brother
August 15th, 2017
Beaver Creek, Oregon
"Are you—did you have any dreams?"
Daniel reluctantly opened his eyes and looked over at Chris.
"Nothing with Sean in them. I didn't dream about anything." Daniel felt super discouraged. He'd been trying for five days straight and he still couldn't have a dream where Sean appeared.
"Sorry. I am sure he'll come back, though. You told me he was a sly wolf. He probably can't use his dream powers all the time. He has to be careful."
"Oh yeah. I hadn't thought about that."
Daniel looked up at the small roof of Chris' tree house, wishing he could switch powers and travel to Sean whenever he wanted to. Maybe if he saw him only in dreams then it would be better. He could still hang out with Sean, but he wouldn't get him in more trouble.
It'd been two weeks since they'd talked, but it felt so long. And Grandma had erased Sean's number before Daniel could write it down. It was his birthday today and they were separated, just like back in Haven Point.
"There's something I do when I'm missing Mom." Chris sat up and took out a letter from the treasure box he had. "It's kinda dumb, but I take out my paper and write her another letter, just letting her know what I am doing. I wrote her about all the fun I've been having this Summer, with Dad."
Chris smiled, but it was kind of a weird smile. Like he was happy but something was still wrong. Like he was missing something. Missing her.
Daniel knew the feeling.
He really liked seeing Chris again, and getting to sleep in and have so much food. And Grandma and Grandpa had just bought him all this new stuff for school. He was gonna be in the same grade as Chris.
But it didn't feel like home without Sean—and Dad.
Chris carefully placed the letter back in the box, and Daniel wondered if it really helped writing those letters.
Chris kept on talking about the different stuff he would write her. And Daniel knew he shouldn't interrupt. But he couldn't hold in the question that kept popping into his head whenever Chris talked like this.
"Do you think your mom is waiting for you in heaven?"
"Ummm." Chris scrunched his face.
"You don't have to talk about it. Forget I said anything."
"No, it's okay." Chris said. "Dad told me she was in heaven. I think she is too. But…I hope she's not just sitting around waiting for me. She liked to do a lot of stuff before…."
"Yeah," Daniel said. "My dad was really busy when he was alive. That's why I'm not sure there is a heaven anymore. Sometimes I think it's all made up to make people feel better. Like the way Sean made up the house in Puerto Lobos that we were going to. He's not even living there."
"What?" Chris frowned. "You didn't tell me that?"
"I don't know. But said he's living with some friends. I am just worried he is just going to end up homeless like before."
"Well, he called you right? That means he at least has money for a phone."
"Yeah, but..."
"But?" Chris asked.
"Ummmm," Daniel took a deep breath, awkwardly rubbing his hands on his shirt like he had something sticky on it. "But I feel like he still tries to make me think that everything's fine, when it's not. He doesn't want me to blame myself, but it's my fault that he got in that car accident. I feel so bad I jumped."
Daniel sniffed, and looked away, at the stupid birds flying on Chris' garage. They were so dumb and happy. But Daniel couldn't even remember not worrying about something. Not since that day at the border.
"But you didn't want Sean to get caught. You turned yourself in for your brother. You are like the coolest brother ever!"
"Stop!" Daniel shrugged off Chris' hand, feeling really annoyed. And something more than annoyed. "I didn't tell you the whole truth. For why I jumped."
Chris sat back, looking a lot more serious. "Okay."
"I was also kinda afraid."
"Well, duh. You were surrounded by cops with guns. That's it?" Chris frowned. "Even with your powers, I would be super afraid-"
"I wasn't just afraid of the cops." Daniel blurted out, his next words coming a lot slower. "I was kinda afraid of Sean, too."
Chris' eyes got wider and wider. "Sean?"
"Yeah," Daniel's voice dropped to a whisper. As if Agent Flores would hear him and get the wrong idea. "Not that Sean was gonna hurt me or do anything to me. He is the best brother in the world."
"Then..." Chris half shook his head, looking super confused.
"Just that, when he said for us to go through with it. You know, actually break through the cop cars. It was weird." Daniel nudged closer to Chris, and only continued when his best friend nodded his head. "Sean sounded so different. He kind of sounded like Lisbeth."
"The evil preacher? But Sean's nothing like her. Your brother is one of the good guys." Chris was looking at him like Daniel was the bad guy.
"I know!" Daniel practically shouted. "But, he still reminded me of her. Right then."
"But wasn't she….really evil? She was using you for your powers. She even sent someone to kidnap you so she could use them again."
"Yeah, I know." Daniel put his hands in his face, feeling super embarrassed but he didn't know why. "That's why it's so stupid."
"No. You're allowed to feel how you want. Even about family. At least, that's what the therapist Dad took me to told me." Chris said. But he was still frowning. "But I don't get why you feel that way about Sean?"
"I don't know. It was just that one moment. Lisbeth was gonna kill Sean and anybody to keep me. And then, when we got to the border and were surrounded by cops….Sean told me to keep going. No matter what, even if we destroyed the the whole border patrol. I just didn't want anyone else to get hurt."
"But he wouldn't hurt anybody on purpose." Chris said.
Daniel looked at Chris, and shook his head. "No, Sean wouldn't—well only for me. That's why I.…I thought it would be better if I left. If I turned himself in. Sean wouldn't have to keep protecting me."
Chris smiled. "Yeah. I get that. He loves you a lot. Like my Mom did. She stopped a bully that was picking on me and told his Dad he'd answer to her if he picked one me again. Even though he was six foot four and had more muscles than Dad. She was really brave."
"She sounds—awesome." Daniel said. When Chris talked about her, he wished he could have met her. Too bad his powers couldn't bring people back to life.
"She was. Like your brother." Chris waited a second before talking again. "Maybe he got carried away attacking the ultimate bay guys trying to separate you guys. Like I do with Mantriod. But I don't think he would ever end up like a bad guy. He's totally on the good guy team."
"Yeah. He is." Daniel decided right then it was true.
It didn't matter if his powers were bad or good. Sean was a good person, and sometimes good people did bad stuff with their powers. But it didn't make them bad people. Even if it made their brother blind in one eye or killed a cop. Even if the good person failed to stop bad things sometimes.
Daniel was still a good guy. Because his best friend believed in him. Because his brother still did. That wouldn't ever stop.
Maybe he could go live with Sean once he got his place? Daniel wiped the stupid tears forming on his face.
Chris put a hand on him, and then it was dumb, and Daniel didn't know why he did it, it was a weird thing to do, but hugged Chris awkwardly around the shoulder. He immediately tried to pull back, but Chris latched on to his arm.
"It's okay. Dad says it's okay to hug."
"Okay." Daniel said. It was funny even though he and Sean both lost their dad, he felt like he could talk to Chris more about missing people. Like Chris wasn't trying to make it all okay. Wasn't trying to invent something to make him feel better.
Maybe because too many people had done that to Chris about his mom.
And maybe what Chris believed was right. If ghosts like Naz existed, then maybe Chris' mom was watching over him. And Dad and Mushroom were watching over him and Sean from up in the stars somewhere.
They didn't hug long, just another couple seconds and then Daniel pulled off, hitting his head on the wooden beam. Chris laughed and put a hand over to cover it up.
"Shut up. I am tired of this treehouse. Can we go practice our can shooting?"
"We could do that." Chris got another funny smile, but this time it was his sly one. "Or, we could try and contact Sean again."
"What?" Daniel said. "Like try and dream again? I don't-"
"No, it's what I was gonna say before. Because you told me you couldn't email Sean cause Stephen won't let you use his computer, right?" Chris continued without waiting for Daniel's reply, the way he did when he was really excited about something. "So, I mean we use my Dad's computer instead. He won't be back from work for another couple hours."
"That would be—awesome!" Daniel shouted. "I still have his old email."
"Then come on."
Chris started towards the ladder and Daniel followed him into Chris' house, which didn't smell like stale stuff anymore. They hurried to the computer in his dad's room, and Chris entered the password.
It took Daniel a minute to remember his email address but as soon as he logged in he saw an email at the very top from a new email address- sarahSunylee that was titled Miss You.
Daniel clicked on it and like he suspected, it was from Sarah Lee.
Hey Daniel,
Sorry I didn't write sooner. Jacob gave me your email, but I don't really email. I didn't really use the internet since we didn't have it in Haven Point. But, that's all different now.
I am living in the mountains by a big lake. It's really pretty here, not dry and dusty at all. Since I finished my medicine, I am feeling a lot better. I can even go hiking now with Jacob and his friend, who is really nice to me. I can tell why Jake likes him so much.
He told me you stayed here before, too. I hope you can come visit again when you have time. Jake says you are living in Oregon with your Grandparents. That's not too far from California!
Hope your brother is doing good too. Did you ever make that treasure hunt we talked about? Like for real?
Sarah Lee
"Sarah Lee? A girl!" Chris hovered over his shoulder. "Who is she?"
"None of your business." Daniel shoved him with his elbow. "Just a girl. Well, a friend I made at that church."
"Oh." Chris said, sitting down beside him. "She seems nice. She has really good writing. Bet she is smart."
"Yeah, she is, like her brother," Daniel said. Both Jacob and Sarah Lee were kinda nerds, but Daniel didn't mind. Chris was kinda one too, now that he thought about it. "She lives up in the mountains by a lake. It's a really cool place. Maybe your Dad could take us camping there? They even have a cabin we could stay in."
"That would be awesome," Chris said. "We could use that as our homebase and your friend Sarah could join our—"
"Wait! I just got a new message from slywolf!"
Daniel clicked on the new email and there was Sean, sitting in a little garden, with a funny looking old guy and a plump woman next to him. He was holding three little black and gold speckled chickens in his arms and above him was a banner that read Feliz Cumpleanos 17 on it.
"Whoa, Sean looks…happy."
"You see?" Chris squeezed his hand again. "You didn't do anything bad. You helped your brother escape. He looks a lot better than if he had been celebrating his birthday inside a jail house, like that guy who tried to kidnap you. You're still Super Wolf to his Sly Wolf."
Daniel nodded, reading what Sean had written about the chickens and his new friends. He was already thinking of a reply. He had so much he wanted to tell his big brother.
"Yeah, you're right. And I helped Sean escape and Grandpa not be crippled and a lot of other people too."
Whether his powers came from God or not, Daniel was the one who controlled them. It had been so scary realizing how dangerous he could be with them when he got shot by Merrill that day. But he couldn't run from his powers or pretend they didn't exist. Like Sean said, he'd learned a lot, how to control them for good or bad.
He got Sean somewhere safe for now, and whether he ended up living here or in Mexico, Sean had taught enough to know how to use them the right way. He wasn't going to run from them anymore.
"I can still use my powers for good. Just like Sean does now."
"That's why I got you the cape. You want to go fight Mantriod before Dad gets home and makes me clean up my mess?"
"Yeah, in a minute." Daniel hit the reply button and started typing. "Just got to send a message, from one superhero brother to another."
