TLWtlw – bairseach means shrew or virago, fhraoigh means ill-tempered woman or termagant. So basically, the same thing.
The fact that Rhett cares about his wife's pleasure makes him a one-off from most men in the 19th century. I'm sure the other men were gentle and kind, but they would not inconvenience themselves to bring their partner pleasure.
Chapter Three
One day over dinner, Scarlett thought about Ashley and how everything would be perfect if he was her husband instead of Rhett. Rhett said, "Where are you? You are a thousand miles away."
Scarlett quickly smiled and said, "I was in Georgia. I was just wondering what my friends were doing."
"When we get back to Charleston, I will introduce you to some other women."
Scarlett smiled at Rhett. She didn't say that she hadn't been thinking about girlfriends. She didn't think any man would be happy his wife was thinking about another man.
As Rhett and Scarlett boarded the train, she said, "I had a good time, Rhett."
"I did too."
One thing Scarlett disliked about her husband was that he was always making mocking comments towards her. They were just annoying. Yet every time she scowled at him, he laughed and smiled at her. He made mocking comments about other people, but those were funny.
The couple returned to Charleston and moved into Rhett's family townhouse. After Scarlett realized that they were going to live with his family, she said, "We aren't going to have a place of our own?"
"No, this is easier. Once we start having children, we will get our own place then. I don't want anyone telling me how to raise my children."
"Am I going to have a say in the matter?"
"I will listen and consider your opinion."
"Thank you."
"Then do what I want to do."
Scarlett scowled at Rhett. She didn't know if he was joking or not.
The next morning, Rhett said, "My mother is going to take you calling this afternoon, so you can meet other ladies."
"That is nice of her."
"I asked her too."
"It is still nice of her."
"What about me?"
"It is nice of you too."
When Scarlett got home that evening, she was not happy. The young women of Charleston were not any friendlier to her than the young women of Clayton County. In fact, Scarlett felt like they had been hostile towards her. As she and Rhett were getting ready for supper, she said, "Why were all the young women unwelcoming towards me."
"You aren't from Charleston."
"So what? Are they really going to hold that against me."
"Yes, my mother will also."
"That's just not right."
"Probably not and there is the scandal we just endured. Despite our protestations of innocence, there will be a lot of people who believe we did something naughty."
"It was just a broken buggy wheel."
"Nonetheless, people are going to believe the worst about other people. And you did snag the man they had all been chasing for several years now."
"Several years?"
"Ever since I was seventeen, no sixteen."
"You couldn't get married that young."
"I could have because I was the heir to the Butler fortune. There wasn't a father in Charleston who didn't know that I could support his daughter quite nicely."
"I don't want to live here."
"Unfortunately for you, this is where we are going to live. I have business interests here and I want to be by the water."
"We have lakes in Georgia. There are a couple that are near Tara, Twin Lake, and Rock Hill Lake."
"Tara?"
"My family plantation."
"For the next several months I have some business deals I am working on, then I will take you to visit your family. I will check out these lakes and see if they are big enough for me to consider moving to Tara."
"Thank you, Rhett."
Rhett wasn't moving to Georgia and certainly not to a plantation, but Scarlett didn't need to know that. He wanted to keep her happy for a while longer, so she continued to want to be intimate. He said, "Do you want to go to New York with me?"
"Why would you be going to New York?"
"I am going to talk to a man, Cornelius Vanderbilt, about investing in his railroads."
"Yes, I don't want to stay here by myself."
"We will go in a couple of weeks. While we are there, we will take in some plays and go to a few museums. I would like to go to Barnum's American Museum. I have heard that it is part zoo, part museum, and part freak show."
"It sounds like fun."
"We will probably be invited to some social events while we are there. I will take you to the dress shop my mother uses tomorrow to get some more sophisticated dresses made."
"What is wrong with my dresses?"
Rhett walked to the door and said, "Let's go down to supper." As he and Scarlett were walking down the stairs, he said, "Nothing is wrong with your dresses. They are just dresses for a young belle in the South. In New York, you will need clothing that is more mature."
"Alright."
Scarlett was still confused, but she already knew that her husband was only going to say what he wanted to say. She sat in the chair next to Rhett where he had told her to sit the day before. At the table was Rhett's mother, father, sister, brother, and his grandmother. His mother's mother lived with the family since her husband's death ten years ago. Her name was Mabel Kenesaw. The Kenesaws had never had a lot of money, but while John Kenesaw had been alive, he had made enough money to support himself and his wife.
When Scarlett addressed her mother-in-law as Mrs. Butler, she was not told to call Elizabeth Mother. Likewise, when she called her father-in-law Mr. Butler, she was not told to call Percy Father. When she addressed Rhett's grandmother as Mrs. Kenesaw, she was not told to call the older woman grandmother. She guessed the Butlers were as formal as her aunts.
Rhett, Robert, and Percy discussed what they thought was going to happen with all the territory the U.S. had acquired at the end of the Mexican American War.
Rhett said, "They will probably make the territory of California a state."
"I agree, but will it be a slave state or a free state."
"I think a free state. I don't think California has very many slave owners."
"True, but we won't know for sure until the ink has dried. I hope they reach another compromise on our necessary evil and the nation doesn't go to war."
Robert said, "Me too, Father. When are we going to return to Middleton Acres."
"Next week."
Rhett said, "Mother, what dress shop do you use? Scarlett and I are going to New York City later in the month. We need to get her some more sophisticated dresses."
"We use Claiborne's over on Broughton Road. Liz will be able to fix her right up."
"Thank you. Scarlett, are you finished?"
"Yes."
"Let's go for a walk."
"Alright."
The couple walked along, and Rhett told her the history of Charleston. He said, "Charleston was one of the first settlements in South Carolina. It originally was called Charles Towne for King Charles the second. It was initially established on the west bank of the Ashley River. That was in sixteen seventy. In sixteen eighty it moved to its present location. It is famous for rice and indigo."
"Indigo?"
"It is blue dye."
"Go on."
"Its next name was Charles City and Port. In seventeen eighty-three it finally got its current name of Charleston. It was once the state capital, but now that honor belongs to Columbia."
Rhett and Scarlett walked along with him sharing more about the city. She knew she had an uphill battle getting Rhett to move away from the city. She could tell he really loved it. Maybe that was one of the reasons he had agreed to marry her. So, he wouldn't have to leave it.
After walking for about a mile, Rhett turned them around and headed back to the townhouse. As he and Scarlett approached the home, he said, "Do you want to go to the parlor or up to our room?"
"Up to our room. I have had enough of your family for one day. The only person who is friendly to me is Rosemary."
"That is because she is just a child and doesn't know any better."
That comment earned Rhett a scowl. He didn't care. He kind of enjoyed seeing her scowl.
As Rhett followed Scarlett, he decided he was going to do something with his wife he had only heard about. He was going to give her oral pleasure. He hoped he figured out quickly how to give her pleasure in that way.
The only women Rhett had been with before Scarlett had been whores. He certainly wasn't going to do it with the whores. He wasn't putting his face down there on a whore. A pigsty was cleaner than those women's twats.
Rhett was glad he was a good poker player. That was the only way he could afford to use a whore. His father would give him some money to have a drink and play a little poker, but he had never given Rhett enough to buy a whore. At least a whore that he would put his pecker in that is. He also had to buy a condom and they weren't cheap. His friend, Hugh Hefner, had explained everything to Rhett once he turned eighteen. Up until then he had been having some sexual dreams. He had often made a mess in his bed. After he had started using whores, he still had those erotic dreams just not as often.
Hugh was two years older than Rhett. His friend had told him about whores. He had been so naïve. Hugh had told him to always use a condom with the whores. According to Hugh, whores were walking disease carriers, and the condom prevented the man from catching any of those diseases. Most of those diseases there was no cure for. Hugh had laughed and said, "The condom also manages to prevent your seed from getting into the woman also. Therefore, if you are ever with a proper woman, you should wear one then also. You don't want to have any bastards out there."
"No, I don't. I don't want to have to get married."
"The whores can also give you oral pleasure also."
"You mean like kissing me."
Hugh had laughed and said, "No, like kissing your pecker. It isn't as good as getting to put your pecker in a woman, but it is pretty good. It is also cheaper. It is called a blow job."
"Alright."
"They can give you a hand job also, but you might as well do it yourself and save your money. "
"How did you learn all this?"
"My father."
"Your father?! But your father is a gentleman."
"You know my father is a widower. After my mother died, he never wanted to get married again. He had a housekeeper to run his house, a nursemaid to take care of me until I didn't need taking care of, and a whore to take care of his sexual needs."
"What about companionship?"
"You know he has been calling on Mrs. Conrad for years. I wouldn't be surprised if he and Mrs. Conrad are being intimate. I know she doesn't want to remarry either."
"Why do you say that?"
"I overheard Mrs. Conrad say one time, 'I will never remarry. If I did, I would lose control of Joe's money. Joe left me financially well off, so I don't need to marry again."
It had been Hugh that Rhett had talked to about the dilemma he found himself in. Rhett had said, "I don't want to lose my station in life, and I do want to be intimate with the girl. The problem is – I don't want the responsibility of a wife. I don't want to be with the same woman the rest of my life."
"Rhett, my boy, marry the girl. Fuck her brains out. When you get tired of her, divorce her."
"Good idea. I can make her a settlement with Father's money."
"Of course, if you divorce her, you will be out of polite society. You could just keep her and do whatever you want to do. Go wherever you want to go."
"I like that idea. I can just move to the North."
"And leave her in the South."
"I can leave her at her family plantation in Georgia."
Both men had laughed cruel laughs.
