His head whipped up as the door opened in the cold room- two slim men in suits approached the table. They both looked exactly alike, down to their smoothed, light blonde hair. One wore a black suit, the other wore white. They both took a seat across from him.
"You guys don't look like the usual cops." The young man commented as he eyed them warily. One of the men finally moved to speak.
"Why were you trying to break into that factory?" He asked. The young man almost winced at how shrill his voice sounded. But he remained steadfast and closed off.
"Don't think that's any of your business. Shouldn't I have a lawyer or something?" He asked.
The men looked at each other, then back to him.
"Hmm..no. No lawyer for you." The man in the white suit said. They both stood up as the door opened once again. This time a woman walked in. She wore a dark pink business suit and a pair of glasses. Her red hair was tied into a ponytail. She eyed the two men with an annoyed expression.
"Didn't I tell you two to wait for me?" She asked. The two looked at each other, then silently exited the room.
The woman turned to the young man with a smile as she took a seat. He would admit, he felt more at ease within her presence.
"Hi! You're Finn, right?" She asked. He nodded slowly. The woman stretched out a hand. "I'm Bonnie. I'm with the O.O.O."
Finn blinked at that, not meeting her handshake. "The Ooo?"
She shrugged. "Eh, some call it that. The Organization of Overall Observation. We're like the FBI but way way bigger, and way better. We employ agents from special forces, CIA, FBI, etcetera and give them higher security clearances and much higher positions."
"So..you're like the real government?" Finn asked.
Bonnie nodded. "That is a simple, but fair way to put it."
"Why are you telling me this?"
"Because we would like to recruit you, Finn. We know of your search for your brother and we want to help out."
Finn was stumped for words, but narrowed his eyes at her. "There's no way that's all you want."
Bonnie laughed softly. "Okay, ya got me. Your brother's disappearance is connected to a string of kidnappings we've been watching for years now. There's a shadow organization responsible and we believe they're the reason for those super enhanced criminals out in the world today."
"Woah…you mean people like Big Destiny and The Flame King?" He asked.
"Yep. Not much is known about this organization- and this is the first time we've actually been able to get into contact with someone else investigating them who has no choice but to comply with us." She admitted.
"Oh hold on- who said I was gonna comply?" He asked.
"You did, when you perked up upon hearing about your brother. Jake Martin- age twenty four. He went missing eight months ago in the Grasslands district. Had just left from visiting his fiance, Rainy Lee." She stated.
"How did you..oh wow this is…"
"Finn Martin- nineteen years old. Former high school football, basketball, powerlifting and cross country star. You had a full ride scholarship to Beautopia university but you gave it up because your brother went missing two months after your graduation. So you've spent every week since then trying to find him." She stated.
"How do you know all of this??"
"It's my job." She said with a casual shrug. "Finn, we want to find your brother- to find everyone who's gone missing. And we want your help. I know you're barely getting by. I know you got kicked out of your house because you couldn't keep up the payments without him. I know you're living in his car. And I want to give you a better life while we search for Jake, together."
Finn was silently mulling over his options now. He still didn't trust this- this sounded entirely too good to be true. He sighed. "I don't know anything about your organization and that...that w-worries me."
"No one does. And that's a good thing, Finn. Of course, it doesn't all come free. We're also responsible for some metahuman trials of our own. Only difference is that we actually contain the ones that…the ones whose minds don't hold up during the trials. And we ensure they have a home while we try to fix the damage. They all consent to this too- we don't kidnap people. We don't take their humanity away, not against their will."
He stared at her. "And you want me to go through one of them."
Bonnie nodded. "Yes. It's the most recently finished one- but it's also very simple, there's no big things attached to it. You've got the athletic capability to handle it- it'll push you far behind your current physical limits."
"Like Billy? The old hero?"
"Exactly! Yes! The experiment is literally the same one that he went through decades ago! We managed to successfully recreate it. And we want you to be our next hero."
Finn looked at her in silent thought. He then nodded. "Okay. Guess I don't have much of a choice." He said with a laugh. Bonnie laughed too.
"Oh thank God. I thought I was gonna have to let them arrest you." She laughed.
Finn paused. "Oh."
Finn was led from the police station to a car that awaited outside. The trip was mostly silent, with he and Bonnie conversing briefly every few minutes. Time seemed to pass so slowly, it ached him just to sit there in uncertainty. Eventually, the vehicle came to a stop at a rather unexpected place.
"So…why are we here exactly?" He asked, looking to the black and white suited men- who Bonnie had called The Lemons.
The black suited lemon groaned briefly in annoyance, ignoring Finn. Bonnie nudged him softly. "Ignore them- they're knobs." She commented. "We're here waiting for our ride."
Finn looked to her, then to the black car they'd all traveled in to reach this dock. "Uh…I thought that was our ride?"
Bonnie smiled and shook her head, then pointed up. As Finn looked up, he saw what looked to be a hole opening in the clouds. The four of them were suddenly caught into a tractor beam of sorts, and were quickly being pulled up. Finn couldn't hold the scream that arose as he felt his feet leave the earth.
"Easy Finn. It's just a tractor beam." Bonnie said as she placed a hand upon his shoulder.
Finn was still freaking out despite Bonnie's attempts at calming him. The further they got from the ground, the more his fear grew. Soon they found themselves on a platform in the middle of a massive ship's control room. Finn looked at everything around him in shock as Bonnie ushered him onwards.
"What..what is this??"
"This is the Kingdom as I've nicknamed it. It's an airship equipped with the latest technology- courtesy of myself and my science and tech department."
Finn's mind was reeling at the astonishing place he'd been introduced to. But he didn't have time to express just how shocked he was, as he was almost immediately whisked away into some sort of lab. There were several doctors and armed guards inside. The young man was guided towards a door where he would change out of his clothes into a set of dark gray ones.
After changing he met with Bonnie again, who motioned towards a large, strange pod-like machine. It was surrounded by a series of syringes and a strange lamp. In the center was some sort of bench, which he laid down upon. He was strapped in a few seconds later by automatic metallic cuffs, causing him to briefly panic.
As his eyes scanned the room he realized he was alone- everyone had seemingly left. That was until an intercom came on and he heard Bonnie's voice, successfully calming him down.
"Alright. Finn, this isn't going to hurt a little bit." Bonnie said through the microphone. Finn simply nodded as he let out a breath he'd been holding. "It's gonna hurt like a crazy lot."
"Wait wh-" with that the machine was activated. The syringes all struck into different parts of his body at once, injecting a serum into his veins. The chamber began to close around him, with the massive lights belting him with some form of radiation. All Finn could do was let out a massive scream at the piercing and searing pain he'd felt. It seemed to be an endless experience, one he prayed would come to a close soon. It took about three minutes before the machine finally whirred to a stop. The syringes withdrew from him, the rays stopped belting him.
Bonnie, Dr. Pepper, Doctor Princess and Starchy all rushed into the room as the chamber opened up. Finn fumbled out in a dazed and confused state. Bonnie smiled as she went over to help the stumbling young man. She looked over him, notating the difference in mass. Finn had gained roughly seven pounds of muscle, turning his formerly lean frame rather ripped. He was by no means skinny anymore.
"Looks like it's worked..I hope." Dr. Pepper commented as Doctor Princess went over to check Finn's vitals.
"How do you feel?" She asked.
Finn looked at her and blinked the sleep out of his eyes. "Hungry." He said. She laughed softly and nodded while writing on her clipboard.
"Come. We have many tests to run." She said, helping the man to the door. Bonnie watched as they exited the room.
"Are you sure about this young man?" Dr. Pepper asked. She simply nodded and gave a smile to the older doctor.
"As sure as I've ever been."
It turned into a long day of tests and trials for Finn. Obstacle courses to test his endurance, dodging flight drones to test his reflexes and memory, weightlifting to test his strength and so much more. Finn displayed far greater athletic capability than any recorded human in history, save for one.
Bonnie approached Finn later that day as he rested up in one of the many training areas, drinking water. "Heads up!" She shouted as she tossed a solid log at him. He caught it with no issue and stared at it, then at her.
"Uuhh..thanks?"
She giggled. "It's a test, dummy." She said as she stood in place. "Break it."
He looked to the log again. "Uh..okay." He said as he squeezed either side of the log. With a bit of hesitance and eventually, a grunt of frustration, the wood shattered into splinters on the floor.
"Woah…woah.." Finn stared at his hand in disbelief. "Did I just…did I do that?!" He asked, turning to look at Bonnie with eyes wide. She nodded, a proud smile upon her face.
"Yes, Finn. It seems our experiment was a success. That was a piece of Australian Buloke. It's the strongest wood in the world- with a crushing strength of ten thousand, one hundred fifty pounds." She said as she looked over her clipboard. "Blood tests came back- as did X-rays, MRIs, every test we've ran. Your body is officially enhanced." She'd begun to walk around the young man but soon planted her feet. Bonnie turned with an outstretched hand. "Congratulations- you're our first successful metahuman experiment."
Finn blinked as he stared at her hand, then hesitantly shook it. "I'm…t-thank you? So…how does all of this work?"
"It's simple really. The experimentation process has greatly enhanced your senses, reflexes, musculature and skeletal system. Your healing ability is far greater- for example, a normal person could break their leg. On average it would take about two months to fully heal. If your leg breaks, it would take about three days. The peak a human being could lift would be around a thousand pounds. You can lift about ten times as much."
"Ten thousand pounds?!? That's insane!"
"Very. You can also run up to ninety miles per hour- that's as fast as a cheetah. The process has greatly improved your memory as well, which is why I can't wait to start your combat training! Oh just imagine how quickly you'll pick up everything. Ooh we should start with Krav Magra and transition into judo. Ooh, we can throw in some bojitsu and kendo to make you proficient with several weapons. And marksmanship!" By now Bonnie's eyes were shining with excitement. Finn couldn't help but laugh.
"Sign me up for all of it. I'll learn whatever it takes to save Jake." He said with a smile.
The hours seemed to go by faster than usual as he trained with the O.O.O. Hours soon turned to days, days turned to weeks, and weeks became two months. Finn had mastered twelve different martial arts and mastered combat with fourteen different types of weapons in that time. He'd learned combat tactics and survival methods. But he was growing tired of being cooped up all the time. There had been times that felt less…sterile to him.
They celebrated Starchy's birthday with a big party one night, which led to Finn sneaking several bottles of alcohol and finding he couldn't get drunk as easily anymore. When he made this discovery, Bonnie had caught onto him and simply laughed at his unchanged demeanor.
"Accelerated metabolism, dummy." She said as she giggled. He soon found himself enamored with the woman and moved to grow closer to her. Within that same time he and Bonnie became great friends. He'd learned she was only twenty one years old- just two years older than him and already the lead scientist on a secret government airship.
Finn wasn't too sure about all of this yet. He realized that much as he sat on the top of the airship, staring out at the city below. His hands ran along the edge of a photograph he kept in his wallet. A picture of a man and woman, smiling with three blonde kids. His eyes started to run wet with tears as he stared at the picture, silently swearing an path.
"I'm gonna find him Mom and Dad…I promise you, I will." He half-whispered.
"You will." A voice said, causing him to jump. His senses had been heightened slightly, yet somehow he didn't even notice Bonnie approaching. He supposed it was because he was lost in his own little world.
She smiled down at him before taking a seat, staring off into the distance too. "I'm sorry about all of this." She began, causing him to look to her in confusion. "About how long things are taking. It's been two months, I'm sure you figured we'd have found Jake by now."
Finn shrugged softly and nodded his head. "Yeah…yeah I honestly did. I didn't expect things to go this…far. Not for this long."
"Finn…you're doing a brave thing." Bonnie continued. "I don't just mean volunteering for this. I mean, trying to find Jake yourself. I want you to know, no matter what happens- I'm always gonna be there for you. And we will find him." She said, offering a hand and a smile. "Together."
Perhaps it was the moment that seemed to linger. Perhaps it was the awkwardness in the air that had been dispersed by a feeling of comfort..of belonging. Finn wasn't too sure. But he moved before he could even think- the pairs lips crashing together in a moment of silence.
They withdrew from one another, both with wide eyes. Bonnie blushed as she looked at him, and Finn tried to avoid her gaze with a blush of his own.
"I…I'm so-"
"I should go. I have to um..clean the lab. Yes, and make sure we're properly stocked." Bonnie said in an awkward hurry, speed walking back towards the entryway as Finn watched. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair.
"Nice…way to go dude." He said with a sigh as he fell onto his back and stared at the clouds.
Hey everyone. It's been a minute since I've updated a story and uploaded. This little story here has been playing on my mind for years now- similar to the Immortals. I guess this is just a test, me posting these first two chapters, to see how it goes.
I fully intend to update my other stories soon- mainly Immortals and Kids of Summer. Been facing a heap of financial and mental struggles lately, so I've decided to escape back into the world of fanfic. I really hope you guys stay along for the ride, and I'm sorry to those who read my other stories who are waiting on updates.
I'm not going anywhere anytime soon though. Doesn't matter how bad things get- I have this app, I have my mind, I have my writings, and I have you guys. And that means the world to me.
