A/N: Thanks to all of you who are reading this story and liked the first chapter, also thanks to those who took some time to review, it always makes me happy to know what you're thinking about the story. I've been having this idea since my last rewatch of Private Practice, each time any Addisam scene came up I kept thinking about Derek's reaction about that relationship.
As promised, here's the second chapter. Being honest, I wan't planning to upload this until tomorrow, but the chapter has been ready for a while, besides I've seen a lot of Addek/Taylor Swift posts today, and I thought adding a new chapter into the mix should work just fine.
I will try to keep the weekly updates, this one is a bit longer, but I have to say that I enojed writing it, I hope that you feel the same way while you read it. I really did miss writing fanfics and after Addison's return to Greys I've been inspired to write again, let's hope that this time it will last enough to write some more stories that I have in mind or at least to finish this one, on the good side, the next few chapters are almost ready.
Anyway, enjoy this chapter! And sorry for the long author's note again.
I KNEW YOU WERE TROUBLE
What seemed to be the longest day he had ever lived, was finally coming to an end, Derek had managed to arrive to California, check on his patient and see his ex-wife fooling around with one of his oldest friends, not only that, because if they seemed okay, probably he would've followed Naomi's advice to look the other way, but not after he saw them arguing at the practice, he had been an expert himself on the field of having public arguments with Addison, and somehow, he kept thinking about those days. But and most important, what were Sam and Addison arguing about? Because the little that he heard, it didn't seem like a casual "please don't leave the toilet seat up" argument.
In any case, all that he had seen on that day, it was a lot for any person in less than twenty-four hours.
And even though any regular person would have just let it go and head back to his empty hotel room after a day like that, Derek wasn't still ready to call it a day, because the only plan that he had after his arrival was to have dinner with his little sister, and he kept his word.
Besides, perhaps Amy knows more about what's going on? No, he wouldn't use his sister to find out about what's going on with his ex-wife.
He wouldn't do that, right?
Right? Well, maybe just a little information wouldn't hurt anyone.
"… Working with Ginsberg wasn't that big of a deal, I'm too good to be bossed around by another woman with residents following her everywhere. Being at the practice feels more like a… Grown-up job?" Amelia was explaining to her brother how was working on a Private Practice instead of being at the hospital like most surgeons at her age.
"A grown-up job? Is that your medical opinion, Amy?" Derek asked sarcastically.
"Whatever, you know I'm right, besides, it annoys you that I might be as good as you are… Or not, let's say it differently, your little sister is as good as a surgeon as you are. How about that?" Amelia teased him after taking a sip of the coke in front of her. She had chosen a regular restaurant, one of her favorites, not a fancy one, but one that she enjoyed. Probably if any other of her siblings would be visiting town, she would've invite them over to Addison's place, after all, Addison would be the one dealing with them instead of her, mostly because her sisters actually like Addison, but with Derek things were different, things were awkward enough with Addison's messy relationship to add an ex-husband into the mix.
"Shut up." Derek said after taking a bite of his pizza. "So…" He cleared his throat, there was no way to say it casually, or for it to come up normally, so he just said out loud what's been on his head since he left the practice (or was it the spa?) where they worked. "…Sam and Addison, they're together. How did that even happen?"
At this point, he didn't only care. It bothers him.
Addison can have any man that she wants. Then, why Sam Bennett? But then again, that would bring the same old question he had made himself years ago: Why Mark Sloan?
Amelia laughed before saying anything and only replied to her brother after several seconds of laughter. "For how long were you holding up that question?"
"Are you going to tell me or will you keep gloating? Because if that's the case, forget I said anything." Derek rolled his eyes, if Amelia didn't give him any clue about them, then he will be right where he started.
"Come on, Derek. I'd be concerned if you wouldn't have said anything, maybe Naomi puts a good show by pretending she's okay with it, but I know you well enough to know that it…" Before Amelia could continue and say another word, Derek didn't let her finish.
"Amy… Forget I said anything. I don't care, that was just me being curious about two old friends." Sometimes, he hated the fact that he had to grow up along four sisters, because they always found their very own special way to annoy him.
"Two old friends? Is that what you call Addie on these days? That's what you say that you two are? Because I am sure that two old friends wouldn't have been asked to leave Disneyland Paris for inappropriate behavior or was it that other place where you and Addie…"
Yeah, it is a fact. Talking with any sister is impossible.
"Just forget I asked." Each of his sisters had that talent to make Derek lose his mind, and right now, Amelia was the runner up, and that's saying a lot, considering the three-hours long call he had with Kathleen about a couple of months ago, where she kept advising about how he needed to deal with his transition of identity and self-confidence, also known as midlife crisis.
Amelia, on the other hand, was enjoying Derek's expression and his obvious annoyance. She smiled victorious and took another sip of her coke.
"What do you wanna know? I won't give you any dirty detail though, not that I know any… As much as I keep asking Addison about it, she wouldn't say anything… Or maybe she did say something about Sam's hands... No, no, wait, that was just me trying to guess."
"Will you ever shut up? Why would you even put that image on my mind?" Derek rolled his eyes again, even thinking about that made his stomach feel sick.
Four sisters and not a single brother. Things would have been easier with at least one brother on the family.
"To have a 'grown-up' job, you're not exactly acting like one, you know?"
"Fine, I'll be a grown-up." Amelia tried her best to sit straight and to make a serious face, she also did her best 'grown-up' pose to continue that funny conversation she was having with her brother, even when that funny part was just for herself, she would be lying if she said that she wasn't enjoying each minute of it. "What do you want to know?"
Did he mention how much he hated his sisters on this exact moment?
"I don't care that they're together… I stopped caring about Addison a long time ago but…"
"We all know that you stopped caring, we were all there, remember? At least back in New York, now Seattle is a completely different story for what I've heard."
Touché.
Derek's patience had a limit, especially around his sisters, but Amelia in that moment was pushing him to the edge of it.
"You make it very easy, Derek."
"And you make it very hard, Amy." He knew that this conversation with his little sister wasn't going anywhere, but his curiosity was even bigger than his annoyance towards Amelia.
"So… When did it start? Naomi mentioned something about Med School, that couldn't be possible, right?"
That last part caught Amelia's attention, it was obvious for her that Derek was not going to ignore that. He was still there across the table, right in front of her. In a normal situation, he would have walked away as soon as she started to tease him, but he was still there.
"And... that would hurt your ego? Relax, Derek. Addie was crazy about you, everyone knows that, even you, I was like twelve at the time and I was obsessed with unicorns when you first brought her home, but even I could say that she was disgustingly in love with you, even though I kept asking what did she even see in you… What I'm trying to say is that, no, I don't think they had something going on back in the day. He probably just asked her out and she refused him because she only had eyes for you. But I'm sure you already know that."
Derek nodded showing a slightly sad smile on his lips, thinking about those days made him remember how easier was everything back then. When did life became so complicated?
"Disgustingly in love? Do you realize that you're saying the same thing that you said when you were twelve?"
FLASHBACK, 1991
NEW YORK, SHEPHERD'S RESIDENCE
"Are you sure that I look okay? Maybe I should change, do you think I should change?" Addison asked for what it seemed to be the hundredth time before leaving the apartment that they shared since they became a couple. It was the first time that she was meeting Derek's family and she wanted everything to be perfect.
"Addie, you look perfect. And even if you wouldn't, they will all love you. I know I complain a lot about my sisters, but they're not that bad once you get to know them, please don't tell them I said that. Besides, I am almost sure they will like you better than me."
"Well, being fair, I am way more likable than you are, honey." Addison smiled, giving a final look of herself on the mirror.
"If you keep saying those kind of things, they will like you even better." Derek hugged his girlfriend and gave her a quick kiss on the lips, followed by his typical 'dreamy' smile. "But seriously, you don't need to worry."
"Fine, you know I trust you."
They arrived to the Shepherd's residence where all the family was waiting to meet Derek's girlfriend, that same one he kept mentioning in every conversation he had with them, the one who seemed too good to be real, or at least that was what his sisters were saying. Addison had met briefly to Nancy and Lizzie as they were both also attending to Med School, but they never shared more than a few words.
As Derek predicted, she was a success along the Shepherds, even his own mother was impressed with the girl that caught her only son's attention, for Addison it was a bit strange to see a family acting like… A family? Because she had never experienced that with her own, which is why she still hasn't brought her boyfriend to Connecticut to meet Bizzy and The Captain.
Though all the Shepherd sisters were very welcoming, it was the little girl holding a stuffed unicorn who made Addison feel like part of the family, as if she wasn't an outsider in that 'normal' environment.
Once the dinner was over, each person on the Shepherd family had a moment with the couple, getting to talk to Derek's mother after hearing a lot of stories was a bit scary, but they made the whole night enjoyable. They were definitely the complete opposite of Addison's own family, which she found refreshing. Once the interrogation about her life was over, Addison and Derek moved apart from the crowded living room and joined the smallest of the Shepherds.
Amelia was apart from her sisters as she was more focused on the unicorn on her arms, however, once the couple approached, her attention went immediately to them.
"You know, back home I used to have one of those too. Though, I was more of a fan of bears, which is kind of lame, I know" Addison said to get the girl's attention, and with that, she made her smile.
"I don't think it is lame, it is just more… Traditional. You seem like a traditional girl. Unicorns on the other hand, aren't, they are awesome, they are magical and do great things."
"Addie, why don't we go back with the rest of the girls? I am sure you don't want to spend the whole afternoon speaking about unicorns with Amy, if she starts, you will never hear the end of it." Derek warned her, but Addison didn't mind, she was intrigued to know her as much as any other person in Derek's family.
"No, no, it's okay. I want to stay here with Amy for a little bit."
Amelia smiled triumphant.
"…So, you said that you are willingly living with my brother? May I ask why? When he was still living here I was counting the days for him and Mark to go to college. Did he tell you about that time they put a frog on our microwave? Mom was so upset… You should be careful with that."
That story made Addison smile.
"Well, he hasn't done that yet, but I'll keep an eye on it. But I think he's not as bad as you think, you know? He's actually very sweet, also… He has nice eyes, just like yours."
"Did he pay you to say those nice things to make him look better? That's totally something he would do." The little girl laughed, which also made Addison smile, Derek's reaction was totally different.
"Amy, that's enough, stop bothering Addison with your questions." Derek held his girlfriend's hand after saying that to his sister.
"She's not bothering me, honey. Actually I do enjoy talking to her, you know? And to answer your question, Amy, yes, we enjoy living together… Mostly because we have loved each other since the day we met. We'll tell you that story later." While she said this, her smile kept growing, almost as much as the brightness on her eyes whenever she was talking about her boyfriend. "And no, he isn't paying me to say that. He is really a nice guy; you know? Probably the nicest I've met. And he always talks about you, I've heard so many stories that I feel like I already know you, which is why I was so excited to finally meet you. Don't say anything to the other girls, but I am pretty sure that you're his favorite."
Amelia smiled at Addison's words, that's when she noticed that she would be a good addition to the family.
"Oh, that I know. It isn't a very hard choice, though; I am way better than all of my sisters." Addison in that moment, found very cute how Amelia despite being the youngest, was the one most similar to Derek. "You're cool. You're also like very pretty and very polite, which is a bit annoying, but I'm sure mom will appreciate that. Seems like that your only bad quality is that you're disgustingly in love with my brother. Am I right?"
Both Derek and Addison laughed on Amy's conclusion about Addison.
"Are you, Addie? Are you disgustingly in love with her brother?" Derek teased, smiling at his girlfriend with that look that only said that he felt that same way about her.
"I'm afraid that I am." Addison gave Derek a quick kiss on the lips while he was still holding her hand.
"Ugh, I was really starting to like you until you did that, Addie. But I will give you another chance." Amelia shook her head and turned to Derek. "And you… You better not let her go, idiot."
END OF THE FLASHBACK
"Well, I was right, wasn't I?" Amelia said but this time, she didn't get any reply from her brother, because that was a thought that he locked from his head a very long time ago.
"It is late, Amy, maybe we should get going. We both have to work tomorrow morning." Derek suggested while looking down.
"Derek? Have you talked to Addie since you arrived? As much as I would like to tell you about what's going on, you know it isn't my place to say anything, you said it yourself, you're two old friends, maybe, just maybe if any of you don't make things awkward, I am sure you will manage to have a decent conversation with her, after all, she is the only one who can give you the answers that you're looking for." Amelia finally stated referring to Derek's only question of the evening, and even though it didn't give him any answer or any sign of relief, he knew that his sister was right even though he wouldn't admit it.
Sure, and ask her what? Hey, Addie, why are you sleeping with another of our friends? Should I go and warn Weiss that he will be the next one?
Addison will surely appreciate that.
"I'll go get the check." Derek left his seat leaving also that conversation behind.
XX
The next day had finally arrived and Derek had woken up with the first sunlight in the morning, he was definitely not in Seattle anymore. That was his first thought as soon as he opened his eyes. He left his bed and stood nearby the window of his bedroom, the room had a view to one of the beaches, even from that early in the morning, there was a lot of people walking near it, and even some others surfing and swimming.
Doesn't people get tired of doing that all year? Is Los Angeles so stereotypical? What's next? Finding a celebrity on the way to the hospital?
Derek shook his head, clearing those thoughts, only for his mind to lead him to a different one.
Was Addison already one of those people? She owns a beach house now, she's not the New Yorker he remembers who liked to take morning runs across the Central Park, surely she has now some LA morning routine… Well, she and Sam apparently.
Do they surf together now? Addison doesn't even know how to surf.
Shit
Sure, he could have stayed there all day trying to guess if Addison was fitting into that LA steotype but it was about time until he got paged by the hospital and operate on his patient… With Sam…
Great.
Working at St. Ambrosse was a completely different experience than his actual job in Seattle, because this wasn't a teaching hospital, he didn't have there an army of interns or residents trying to impress him to get into a surgery, no, the environment was more professional, as most of the physicians were already experienced doctors on their fields.
Or at least, that was what it looked like from the outside, because working along with Sam Bennett that day will prove him that things aren't that different as it would have been in Seattle.
Both doctors checked the patients' scans and results from the previous day and agreed to take him to the O.R. as soon as possible to repair what was wrong, they couldn't wait much longer. They met again once they were getting ready to operate, in fact, they haven't talked about anything different than the patient, Derek knew that if he said something different he wouldn't stop, so, keeping everything professional was always the best choice.
Sure, because that always works.
"Ready?" Sam asked after they finished washing their hands on the scrub room.
"I'm always ready, Sam." He walked to the O.R and while the nurses were finishing to prepare the patient, he said his signature phrase before each surgery. "Okay, everybody… It's a beautiful day to save lives. Let's have some fun."
He didn't notice it at the moment, but Addison was standing at the gallery for a brief moment and a big smile showed up at her face when he said those words.
Some things never change.
They were very quiet working on the first couple of hours, only talking about the monitoring and the cardiac rate of the patient while they were working.
"So… How long do you plan to stay in California, Derek?" Sam was the first to break the ice, while keeping his attention on the man's heart. "It's just about time until you find yourself missing the woods and the rain."
Derek forced a smile that wasn't visible through his surgical mask. "You know Seattle is more than that, right? They also have great ferryboats. But, to answer your question, I'm only here for Luke's surgery, you know that. I want to keep an eye of him for a couple of days, then I'll head back home. Being honest, I don't know how you guys ran away to a place like this. You would think that New Yorkers were not made to love any other city, especially if said city is on the west coast."
Keep it casual, don't mention the fact that he's fucking your wife.
Ex-wife.
"Well, coming from someone who actually did run away from New York and fell in love with another place, I'm sure you must understand." Sam said almost inmediately.
"Well, Seattle does have its own charm."
"Oh, I bet it does, I'm sure the woods and the ferryboats are great, but for what I've heard, it has way more than that."
"What is that supposed to mean?" Derek asked without looking away from the patient, experience had taught him to keep his temper while being in the O.R, at least most of the times.
Luckily for the patient, Sam also seemed very calmed while he was working.
"Well, you keep saying that we ran here, when we all came to work on a medical practice, which Naomi and I founded, and now owned by Addison, we made a life out of it, you on the other hand, you did run away from New York and it didn't take you long to replace every part of your life, or at least that's what I've heard… How's Meredith, by the way? You've hardly mentioned her since you arrived."
Because it's none of your fucking business.
Derek didn't even want to acknowledge what Sam was saying, was he even trying to pick a bone for what happened the day before? Because if that was the case, then Derek would have to take back what he said earlier, this hospital might be as bit of dramatic as Seattle Grace Mercy West.
"When did you start planning to make a move on my ex-wife? Was it on Med School? Was it while you were at our wedding? Or was it after leaving Nai?" Sam didn't answer, and it was for that brief moment when Derek stopped what he was doing and looked up. "What? I thought we were heading to a personal note." Derek added.
"I can guarantee that it started way after you cheated on her."
Sam was lucky that they were in the middle of the O.R because otherwise, Derek would have just punch him on the face, what was he even thinking? Bringing that up in the middle of a surgery? That was a low move. However, before Derek could even react, what was starting to sound like an awkward encounter between two old friends got interrupted by the heavy sound of the monitor.
"BP is dropping." One of the nurses announced, putting an end to the conversation. "We're losing him, doctors."
XX
"…Come on, Naomi. We saw him talking to you. We know that's Amelia's brother." Cooper, who was at the kitchen with Violet, was trying to get some inside information about Derek's arrival, because even if he has been there just for one day, they already knew that there was something going on, and of course, they wanted all the details.
"Yes, Amelia's brother as in Addison's ex-husband, who just saw her with your ex-husband, and now they happen to be working together. Do we need to add more?" Violet added while taking also a drink from the fridge.
"God, I love working on this place" Cooper smiled while still trying to get anything from Naomi about the recent visit they've received.
"Guys, thanks for the recap but all I know is that Derek came here to operate on one of his patients from Seattle, who happens to be also Sam's patient, both of them are very professional surgeons, you guys are trying to read into lines. There's nothing else to tell." Naomi tried to calm her colleagues' curiosity.
"Well, I did hear Charlotte talking over the phone and mentioned that there was a small confrontation on the O.R. between two surgeons… I wonder who they would be." Cooper insisted, trying to get Naomi to say anything, but she didn't seem as interested on the conversation as he and his best friend.
"Oh, no, no. I don't think so, Sam wouldn't do that." Violet added quickly.
"Sam wouldn't do what?" This time, it was Addison who joined the conversation, she had just arrived to the kitchen to get her green juice, even though it was a bit hard to get used to it at the beginning, now she knew that gossiping on the kitchen was some kind of ritual for the Oceanside Wellness' doctors.
"And, that's the cue for us to leave. Don't you have patients waiting, Vi? I'm sure I have patients waiting." Cooper took his coffee and left the kitchen while Violet followed him.
"I do, let's go, Coop."
Addison watched them leave while raising an eyebrow. "What was all that about?" She asked Naomi while reaching the bottle of green juice from the fridge.
"What do you think? Violet and Cooper heard that Derek is here, obviously they found out who Derek is and now they think that there's drama between all of us." Naomi showed a soft smile, sure she didn't enjoy the gossip as much as the rest of her colleagues but she understood how this… Situation? Could be entertaining for the people outside of it.
"Well, there's not…. I think. He did see me and Sam in the middle of… something yesterday." Addison admitted before taking a sip of her green juice, that would definitely improve the bad taste of the conversation she was getting into.
"Oh, God… I don't want to know."
"No, no, no, Nai, nothing like that, we were just… Arguing. And Derek walked in and he… He seemed upset."
As much as she didn't want to admit it, it wasn't the whole baby argument with Sam that was keeping her at the top of her nerves, it was since the moment that she saw Derek arriving at the hospital when she started to feel like she wasn't herself.
Addison had L.A for her, it was as much as her place as Seattle was Derek's, she respected that and it was even one of the reasons on why she decided to move and settle in that city. It was the completely opposite from Derek, and by that it meant that it was also the opposite of the previous life that she was used to. Now she loved L.A, she loved the beach and the warm weather, she enjoyed working at the practice and even those gossiping sessions with her colleagues in the kitchen, but as soon as Derek showed up, then she felt like the mess she once was around him back in Seattle.
No, he doesn't get to make me feel like that, not anymore.
It's about time until he goes back to his perfect twelve-years old and things will get back to normal, right?
Right?
"Well, that isn't exactly something to be worried about, we all have seen those kind of arguments before… Although, Cooper did mention something about an argument at the hospital, I mean, I get Derek, it might be awkward for him, even if he tries to be professional it doesn't mean that it is less weird. I've been here all the time, Addison, and believe me, it doesn't get better."
"Nai, you know that's not what we… Wait, what do you mean that you get Derek? Did he- Did he mention anything? What is that about an argument at the hospital?"
Naomi shook her head, of course she knew that Derek wasn't exactly happy to know about Addison and Sam, and much less seeing them together all over the hospital and the practice, but why would she mention anything? Addison was supposed to be with Sam, as much as she wasn't the biggest fan of that relationship, she shouldn't get to care about another guy.
"Why do you care anyway? Whatever Derek mentioned or not, or whatever we had talked about it's between us, besides, it shouldn't matter, right? You're with Sam now, and it's been over between you and Derek for a very long time. I'm sure that you know him way more than I do, and that's why you should know that as soon as he leaves L.A he will forget about this whole thing and all of you will continue with whatever you guys are doing nowadays."
"Damn it, Naomi, of course I care. It's Derek we're talking about, okay? He isn't just a random ex, or a drunken hookup I had years ago. He – He's Derek. Derek as in the guy I thought I was going to spend the rest of my life with, the guy who wrote me a song on our wedding day and the man I thought was going to be by my side until the end." Addison said out loud something that she knew that should have remained on her thoughts, but now that the words were out there was no turning back.
"Oh… So, you're saying that we get to care about our ex-husbands now? Because I thought you had a very different opinion on the subject."
Addison wanted to say something clever, but again, she wasn't thinking. She hated that Derek's presence made her that way.
"Nai, you know that's not what I…"
Very smart, Addison.
Again, not the place or the time, also not the right person.
"You know what, Addie? I will just go back to my office. I – Let's just go back to not talking about anything related to that. That was a good rule."
Of course that Naomi left before Addison could defend herself or add anything else.
Now you're fighting with Sam and Naomi.
What's next?
XX
"… Luke had a hemorrhage during the surgery, Dr. Bennett and I were able to stop the bleeding, however we weren't able to complete the procedure because of it, at the moment he will need to recover while we keep him on the I.C.U, as soon as his vitals are better, we will be able to take him back to the O.R. We're doing the best we can to get your husband out of the woods, Mrs. Holloway. It might look complicated, but I want to assure you that we came to the best place for Luke to have the best care. We won't give up while there's still a chance, and there is still a chance."
Derek explained to his patient's husband, Derek had been treating Luke Holloway for some time now, he was already familiar with all of the patient's relatives, Luke was married to Eliza, who recently had a set of twins which he had already met, he couldn't allow himself to lose that patient, at this point he was already attached to the case.
"Thanks, Dr. Shepherd." Eliza had tears on her eyes, it wasn't exactly the good news she was hoping but it wasn't bad either, there was still hope. "You too, Dr. Bennett."
Sam kept silent and just nodded while Derek was the one who gave the update to the patient, once the report was completed, they went back to check on Luke while they also filled the post-op files.
"You know that it would have happened anyway, right? It wasn't our fault." Sam broke the ice once again, noticing Derek's expression.
"I know that, but we should've kept everything outside of the O.R. Luke deserves our complete focus. Damn it, Sam, that family has been through a lot, they deserve better than what just happened."
"I know." Sam didn't mention any other word, he took the patient's file and went to the room to monitor his stats.
Not the moment, not the time.
Great.
Derek stayed there re-reading the chart, studying every step he took during the surgery and thinking on how to act the next time, he was certain that he didn't want to deliver any worse news to Luke's family.
Without even realize it, the time went by quickly since he first arrived to Los Angeles, some hours after the surgery he found himself drinking a cup of hot chocolate (or a good juju how he used to call it, he could use a good juju today) on the attending's lounge, while he kept his laptop in front of him trying to do some more research on similar patients with Luke's condition, he needed to find a better approach, this time it needed to be flawless.
His work related duties were always a good distraction to escape from anything happening around him, and this time, he definitely preferred to do hours of research than keep thinking about Sam Bennett.
He quitted surgery years ago and made a living out of being called "Dr. Feelgood."
Yeah, "Doctor. Freaking. Feelgood."
I might have read that book, some parts of it at least – Body Language, Mind and body connection. How did he even come up with that name? It's a stupid name and it doesn't make sense, not for him anyway.
And yes, he was already ashamed for getting a copy of it. Was it Addison's idea to get that book?
How did I even trust him enough to perform this surgery? He should be out there doing TED talks, not operating.
Great, now I am second guessing a colleague and old friend because he's fucking my wife.
Ex-wife.
"Derek… Hey." Now there was another familiar voice behind him, however he would prefer to hear this one than any other second of Sam Bennett. "How did the surgery go?"
Satan speaks… Or was it the Ruler of all that is evil?
"Addison…" He shut his laptop and took a sip of his hot chocolate, at least this time Addison seemed more relaxed, unlike the other times he had met her since his arrival, it was also the first time since he saw her without Sam lurking by her side. She looked like… Like those times when she visited Seattle, when they were able to have a decent conversation without turning it into the two crazy divorced people who hated each other.
"I guess you must have heard. Things got complicated, we're waiting for the patient to be stable enough to operate again… He's not exactly at his best, but I promised the wife that I would do everything that I can and that's what I'm planning to do."
Addison knew him well enough to know that he will keep trying no matter what.
"Well, what is your next plan?" Talking about work had always been easier. Besides, back in the day, that's how they would spend their evenings after work, speaking on each case they were handling through the day.
Does that actually work for you? Leaving work at work? I bring my work to my home – She said to Sam during one of their arguments. Unlike him, what she didn't add was saying that this was something that Derek and her used to do during their marriage.
"Well, Sam would have to do Left Ventricular Reconstruction for Postinfarction of the LVA, I'm thinking about the Stoney Techinique, which means he will have to go through the lateral myocardial wall with the border area between the viable tissue and the necrotic scar of the interventricular septum, in the meantime, I will be checking the he neurological deficit which was his first symptom of the giant left ventricular aneurysm, secondary to transmural myocardial infarction."
Addison listened carefully to Derek, even though she hated neuroanatomy back when they were in med school, over the years they've spent together, she became familiar with most of the procedures that he mentioned.
"Well, that does seem like a good approach. How about the patient? How is he responding?" Addison took the chart from Derek's hands to see the history of the patient.
"He's still on the I.C.U, he isn't yet stable to be rushed into the O.R" Somehow, speaking about the patient with Addison felt refreshing, because at that time he wasn't thinking about anything else, not about Sam, not about her and Sam, and much less about Seattle. No, at that time his only concern was Luke Holloway. "We will need to wait until he's ready for it."
"Of course, but… For what I see on his chart, he is improving. I don't think it will take more than a couple of days for him to be ready , you'll be able to fix it and go back to Seattle in the blink of an eye." Addison handed back the chart to her ex-husband, finally looking up to him.
"That's what you want, huh? Me going back to Seattle and leave your city? Do you realize that I've only been here for two days and this is the first time that we're actually having a civilized conversation without your boyfriend in sight?"
Addison rolled her eyes.
Well, it's not like I don't see you and Meredith everywhere when I go to Seattle.
Did I just compare Sam with Meredith?
"You did come here to work with Sam, unlike us, you knew that, which is why I don't understand why you keep on picking schoolyard fights with him in the middle of the O.R"
"Of course you heard about that, did he run to accuse me for what happened? Seriously? Is he also blaming me for what happened to Luke?" Derek took another sip of his hot chocolate. "I bet he is blaming me. Did he send you over to say that? Sam used to be a likeable guy, what happened to him?" And most important, why are you still with a guy who acts like that, he wanted to add, but he preferred to keep that last part for himself.
Sam was definitely different as what he remembered, he used to be one of his closest friends, now? Now they can barely keep a decent conversation.
Will this place ever get easier?
He can only hope. Or maybe they should all just stick to talk about work.
"He didn't send me over to talk to you, Derek. All I'm saying is that once you finally operate, you can go back to Seattle and we will all continue our lives as we've been doing over the past, what? Four years?" She mentioned referring to the years since they've gotten the divorce.
As if you didn't remember exactly when did it happen, and sure, continue with our lives, that's how we call fucking our friends now.
"Well, that's going to be a bit complicated, Addison."
Her eyes showed the confusion that those words made her feel.
"What do you mean?" Being honest she wasn't ready to hear the answer that he was about to give her.
"I'm guessing you're familiar with Dr. Charlotte King, I heard that she even works at your practice, she's a woman with… Strong opinions and even a stronger character. She's also the kind of person who doesn't take a "no" for an answer."
Derek explained, but for Addison his words didn't make any sense, obviously he knew that she was still confused which is why he added another sentence.
"… It turns out that this hospital needs support on the Neuro department, they have several cases that even the most trained doctors around here are not able to fix, and let's face it, I am one of the best not only in the country but also on this side of the world..."
"Not the most humble, certainly." Addison interrupted, but he didn't mind and continue.
"...Which is why she asked me to stay a bit longer after Luke's surgery and review those patients... So, yes, I am staying for few more weeks, so we all better learn to live our lives while working together"
He's staying longer and things with Sam could not be worse. Most important? What was Charlotte thinking? Complaining to her was pointless.
"And Addison? Tell your boyfriend that after he's done blaming me for what went down in the O.R, we can actually work as the grown adults that we are to actually save our patient's life."
Saying that, Derek walked out of the room.
Damn it, Addison, why do you even care? He's not your husband anymore, and Sam isn't probably your boyfriend by now, or at least he won't be once we actually talk about our problems that are not related to Derek Shepherd.
Do we have problems related to Derek?
They should be able to work together, all three of them, right? But why she didn't feel like that?
Why do you even care?
The good thing about their divorce was how far away they've been from each other ever since, usually during her visits to Seattle they act as old friends, but after Derek saw her with Sam, things have changed.
She hated to admit it, especially now when she is trying not to think about it, but Bizzy was always right after all.
People plan and God laughs.
A/N: Derek will be staying around the hospital for a little bit longer, there was also a bit more of addek interaction and it surely won't be the last (There will be more on the next chapter). Also, I might be finding a little fun to write Derek and Addison's thoughts into the story.
What do you guys think? Please, review and tell me.
