Family
Chapter Two: Family Outing

"We're meeting her here?" Hirohito heard his wife ask and he glanced at her.

"Yes," he said simply as Kikuyo brushed down their youngest's hair.

"What is she like?" his oldest asked and he went to look over to Haruto.

Two years younger than his newly found daughter, Haruto looked a lot more like his wife. Dark-haired and dark-eyed, he was almost as tall as Hirohito and had room to grow at 16 years old. He was just as serious too, having become more like himself at least in personality.

"Atsushi is…sweet and kind, and outspoken at times," he mused aloud. "She can be formal, but doesn't mind expressing herself a bit more if something bugs her or she sees something wrong. The two of us are still getting to know each other though, so there is plenty I don't know."

"Is she going to like us?" his middle child, at 12 years old, asked and he gave Riku a small smile.

"I'm sure she will."

He did not, actually, know for certain. He didn't know if Atsushi resented his family at all, or did not want to really meet them. For all he knew, she could be upset at him having 'left' her (even if he hadn't known about her) to have another family and had lived and loved them all this time, while who knew what had happened to her (he still wasn't privy to her past).

"What does she look like?" Riku asked, curiosity clearly hounding his child.

"You'll see soon," he told him, though he knew he had a photo on his phone that he could've shown them at any time. Only Kikuyo had been allowed to see it though, with him oddly protective and possessive over it. "She's going to come and have lunch with us here."

He'd specifically made reservations at a nice restaurant, just so Atsushi could hopefully see he'd wanted to treat her out, just as equally as he could and had for his family. There was no need for her to feel lesser, if she indeed feel so.

The front of the restaurant was crashed into by a vehicle then and screams echoed through the restaurant, while Hirohito's stomach dropped. Why now, of all times, did this have to happen? He glanced at his family in fear and tried to huddle them closer, grimacing as he thought of his daughter. Was it fortunate she was not there, to be caught up in this? Unless she were to come now and unknowing of the trouble, and get herself caught up in it regardless.

What a ruined lunch! He'd wanted her and his family to meet and get to know each other, and he'd wanted to make the meeting special, especially for her. Now this had to have happen and it was like nothing was going right between them.

"Alright! Listen up and stop that screaming! I want everyone to the middle —"

"What's going on?" a clear voice rang out in the quiet, interrupting apparently the leader of the gang.

A clear, familiar voice that made Hirohito freeze.

When he looked over, he saw his daughter there, looking like she'd dressed up to come there and looking at the scene in consternation from her spot at the hole where the front of the restaurant was. Her eyes, so like his but not, scanned the restaurant and alighted on him and his family, narrowing unhappily as she frowned.

"Obviously, I interrupted something," she growled.

"Yes, you did —!" the leader started to yell out, only for Atsushi to come and sucker punch him and then duck under him to transform into a white tiger that, with amazing speed, rushed through the rest of the attackers and took them down within a blink of the eye.

She transformed back and gracefully flipped, landing on her feet and glancing back at the twitching bodies with a sharp frown. Then she took out her phone from her purse and called someone.

"Aa, Kunikida-san," she talked into her phone. "I need a clean up at Heinchinro Yokohama Honten. Some guys came in through the front…with an armored vehicle. Yeah, don't worry about it. I took care of it. No, no, I was actually to have lunch with my father and his family. Okay, that'll do. Thanks, bye."

She concluded the call and started walking, ignoring the cowering diners and bodies left behind, and headed over to him. She looked sheepish.

"I'm sorry I'm late. There was a delay in traffic because of…" her eyes trailed off to the armored vehicle, "an armored vehicle chase that was causing problems. I suppose we'll have to find somewhere else to eat?"

Hirohito wasn't sure if he was still breathing.

"Otou-san! You never said Onee-san was so cool!"

Well, Riku wasn't wrong about that, even if Atsushi's flushed cheeks at the comment was adorable.

Having traveled over to the café under her work, he and his family crowded a table there and had ordered some food.

"Onee-san, Onee-san, can you really turn into a tiger?" Riku asked excitedly and Atsushi blushed hard.

"A-ah, yes," Atsushi confirmed and Hirohito had the confirmation his eyes hadn't been lying to himself earlier. "I used to do it just when the moonlight hit me, but then after I joined the Agency I learned better control over my Ability. Now I can transform when I want and if I only want to turn certain features, like just my legs or arms."

"Cool! Did you know my name means 'clever tiger'? It's like we're really, really, really related!" Riku exclaimed, practically bouncing in his seat.

Tamaki, his youngest at 7, was watching her wide-eyed. Even his oldest was watching her in barely concealed awe.

"That's great. I'm glad to be 'really' related to you," Atsushi said warmly, face softening and becoming utterly sweet for Riku.

"H-How," Haruto cleared his throat nervously, giving her an uncertain look. "How long have you worked with the Armed Detective Agency?"

"Probably almost two years," she nodded thoughtfully. "I was recruited pretty quickly after I left the orphanage."

Before he could finally question her on that, another man popped up —oddly covered in bandages and messy dark hair covering an eye. He'd glomped Atsushi from behind and was staring at Hirohito and his family curiously.

"Eeeh, Atsushi-chan! Who are these people?"

"Dazai-san, this is my father and, um, my half-brothers, and my…step-mother," she introduced awkwardly.

That apparently took the man aback to become serious for a moment, though he hadn't let go of her just yet. Hirohito wondered where Fitzgerald was and if he knew this man.

"Everyone, this is Dazai-san, one of my co-workers and my mentor. He's also one of two people who'd recruited and introduced me into the Agency," Atsushi explained, leading Hirohito to re-examine this stranger more closely than before. The image he presented was not one Hirohito was sure he liked or approved of. He hoped all her co-workers wasn't like this.

"Off, mongrel," once again a familiar voice interrupted, drawling the words with disdain, and Fitzgerald finally appeared behind the two, towering over them with his height. He roughly hauled this Dazai off of Atsushi, separating them. "Don't you have work to do?"

"Don't you?" Dazai parroted with a laugh, dangling from Fitzgerald's grip.

Fitzgerald rolled his eyes and ignored the other man to focus on Hirohito's daughter. "Heard you were caught up in some sort of hold up at a restaurant."

Atsushi waved it off. "Not really. I came in, saw the armored vehicle and the bad guys, and took them out quickly. I was supposed to have lunch with my father and his family there, so…"

The blond narrowed his eyes. "Yes, about that…Heinchinro Yokohama Honten?" he asked aghast. "You never let me take you out to nice restaurants like that! Unbelievable! How can you go there with him and not go with me?"

Atsushi turned red. "I-it's not such a big deal!"

"It is too!" Fitzgerald almost sounded whiny, which amused Hirohito, considering what he knew of the man and how he usually acted with him. "I'm always trying to take you out to fancy restaurants and you always tell me not to bother!"

"Because you don't have to spend so much on me!" Atsushi insisted. Then she weakly argued, "And he'd made reservations!"

"So I just have to make reservations, huh? You'd hate it if I sprung that on you," Fitzgerald literally seemed close to pouting. "I want to take you to somewhere nice too!"

Atsushi sighed. "Okay, okay! If it'll make you happy and stop focusing on this!"

"No take backs," Fitzgerald pointed at her accusingly.

"Dear, who is that gaijin?" Hirohito's wife whispered and he could see his sons perking up and wanting to know, having watched the interaction in confusion and wariness.

"That would be Atsushi's boyfriend," he said, using the term uncertainly. They were dating though, so the term should be apt. "He was the one who'd approached me about meeting her and set up the meeting. I wouldn't have known about Atsushi without him."

Kikuyo's eyes lit up and she looked at Fitzgerald in a new light. His sons were still watching quietly, but Atsushi turned to them sheepishly as Fitzgerald stayed by her side. Dazai came a little closer to the couple, whistling under his breath.

"Wow, Fitzgerald-san! You really do move fast —already moved onto the 'meeting the parents' stage with Atsushi. Amazing work —" and Fitzgerald's hand snatched the back of the man's collar without blinking.

"Please excuse us," Fitzgerald said blithely, already moving away with his captive.

"Yes! Suicide by Fitzgerald, here I come!" the odd man in bandages laughed eagerly.

Atsushi hid her face in her hands in embarrassment. "I'm so sorry. I work with strange people."

"They're…they're not all like that, right? The people you work with?" Haruto asked his sister in shock.

His daughter winced and looked at them all in consternation.

"Honestly, we all have our moments."

Hirohito stared at his daughter horrified.

A/n: Eeey! What's up, y'all? I meant to get this out sooner, but at least it wasn't too late a wait. Though, as you can see from the writing dates, I've had this written for a while XD (I write a lot; edit and publish, not so much?) Anyway, welcome to more of Atsushi's growing family! Three cute brothers and an eager to be step mom~

Quick Points:

1. Kikuyo: At least she's not the usual stepmom archtype, who hates her stepkid/doesn't want them! I actually really wanted to go to the opposite route and have her be really eager to have Atsushi as part of the family~

2. Bros: I really can't wait to introduce and flesh them out; I plan on all the cute interactions with the big sister~

3. Francis is still best boi (who really, really wants to take Atsushi out to nice places).
