Minutes to Heaven
Part VI
Mirai zipped up his luggage, already feeling anxious about the trip. He was well aware that he would be staying in a remote town with Izuku for an indefinite amount of time —at least the remaining months of her pregnancy —and that meant the two of them would be living together in close quarters, alone, and for a long while.
This pushed for an intimacy and crossed boundaries he wasn't sure he was ready for.
Staying for the short while together in the Agency had been fine for the most part; there had been plenty of space and they had enough privacy and distance between them, despite the fact that they had more or less shared the space of his office/room. Others had impeded on their times as well and the work study took up most of their time together.
He had seen the pictures of the home that had been picked out for them. A traditional, old-fashioned Japanese home in the countryside, isolated enough and far from any neighbors. There would be no one around them and they would be in close proximity for who knows how long, and not have time or ability away from each other —especially as he would be focused on taking care of her and she would be recovering from her traumatic ordeal while dealing with an unwanted pregnancy.
It would just be the two of them. Just them in their isolated home.
He took a deep breath and pinched the bridge of his nose. He was not equipped to deal with this at all and second guessed agreeing to this.
A knock on his door revealed that it was the very girl he was tasked to take care of, who looked small and unsure in his All Might hoodie.
"I forgot my hairties in here," she muttered.
He blinked and looked around, spotting the hairties he'd gotten the other day for her. There was, truth be told, actually one around his wrist that he'd taken to keeping for 'just in case' times that he had to tie her hair back. He grabbed them and held them out to her, to which she tentatively accepted them from him.
"When are we leaving?" she asked softly, tugging at the large hoodie she wore.
"As soon as Toshinori comes to pick us up. I'll be leaving Centipeder in charge while I'm away, so he should be here before then."
She nodded slowly, still fidgeting with the hoodie uncertainly. "Are you sure…are you sure you want to come with me?"
He left his luggage and went to her, reaching out to take her hands, taking them away from anxiously grasping at the hoodie.
"I agreed to go with you," he told her firmly. "I volunteered myself. I do not take it back."
Even if he was unsure and second guessed things, he wasn't going to leave her alone to deal with this. He'd already committed and had done so much, what could he do but continue and keep doing more?
Mirai inwardly sighed, turning her around and braiding her hair quickly, tying it after and tucking the end into the hoodie. She pulled the hood up and turned back to him, giving him a small smile.
"Can I wait in the car?"
Mirai gave her the go ahead, accompanying her as he took his luggage down. He helped her into the car first and then he packed his luggage in the trunk, where her own duffle bag was.
"I'll go wait for Centipeder and let him know, so he can inform the others," he told her. "It shouldn't take long. Take a nap, if you need to."
After she nodded and settled herself in the back of the car more comfortably, he made his way back into the building and headed to the main floor. He checked over his office and then the paperwork he was leaving behind, and made sure that everything would be left for his Sidekicks and intern to work with easily. His other staff had already been briefed and had their instructions, so now he just had to talk to Centipeder and wait for Toshinori.
Just in time for him to close his office door, he found himself facing not just Centipeder but Bubble Girl and Mirio too, all three of which were settling up at their desks to start the day. Mirai cleared his throat, trying to look and feel calm.
"I have news," he announced to them. And then he proceeded to tell them about his abrupt leave and that he would be communicating with them through his phone and laptop.
Awata scrunched her eyebrows together. "Will you and Deku-chan be okay? How long is this going to take?"
"Some months," he reluctantly revealed. "We'll be fine. This will be a good lesson in going undercover for Midoriya-kun."
"But if this is important and dangerous, normally you would have me accompany you," Awata pointed out. "Isn't Deku-chan too inexperienced for this? I don't want her getting hurt or for whatever you are working on ending up in failure and you getting upset that she messed up and blaming her —"
"If you were to take an intern with you, wouldn't perhaps Togata-kun be better to accompany you since he's more experienced? Or at least, if this is an intern-focused lesson in undercover, he should also come with you?" Juzou curiously inquired.
Damn it, he hadn't actually counted on all the inquiries or the pushback. He should've known they would be questioning —
"You know what happened to her, why Izuku-kun has been like she was," Mirio abruptly said, looking at Mirai closely.
That made Mirai's two Sidekicks glance in surprise at Mirio and then at him, and Mirai made a split second decision.
"Yes, I do," he admitted. "But she doesn't want anyone to know and we'll be going somewhere to deal with it."
"Okay, I understand," Mirio nodded determinedly. "Please take care of her and make sure she gets better. I won't pry but please let her know I hope she's able to come back to us."
"Oh, uh, same here!" Awata recovered from her surprise, hesitantly putting it together a little. "Make sure Deku-chan gets all better, Sir!"
Juzou nodded as well, also hesitant but also now understanding the situation, even if unknowing of the circumstances. "We'll be waiting for you two to come back."
Mirai felt grateful to his team. "We'll be back before you know it," he promised. "She's…she's been getting better, but she really needs this. We'll see everyone soon."
Thankful for their understanding and now not pushing for answers, he headed out as well, sending a quick text to Toshinori, who was quick to reply that he was now in Mirai's parking lot. Mirai also hurried his way over, only to find Izuku out of the car and talking quietly to Toshinori and also Midnight, who seemed to have accompanied Toshinori there.
"There you are, Nighteye," Midnight looked over to him. "You got things settled?"
"Everyone has been informed and instructions left," he answered stiffly, glancing over to Midoriya, who looked over to him shyly. He gave her a small, reassuring smile as he joined the group. "Are we ready?"
"Both Yagi and I know the way, so both of us can take the driver's seat in both cars and drive over," Midnight told them and Mirai stiffened up.
"That's unnecessary," he said immediately. "I can drive my car with Midoriya-kun and follow you two to our destination."
The stubborn declaration probably threw them off as much as it did him. He didn't know why he felt so adamant about being by Izuku's side, nor why he was insisting that they stayed together.
"It's fine," Izuku declared, coming closer to him. She didn't look at him but grasped his sleeve. "All Might-sensei isn't supposed to be seen with me anyway —he's not supposed to be linked with my absence. If he's seen with Midnight-sensei, it'll just look like they're probably doing Hero work. Sir and I will be driving farther back and be more obscured, so no one will be paying us any attention."
Glad for her quick thinking to cover for his absurd demand and for her support, Mirai kept his face calm and neutral as always, waiting for their decision.
"Alright then," Toshinori made the decision. "Mirai, you and Midoriya-shoujo can stick together and follow us to the house. Midnight and I will lead the way."
All of them ignored Midnight's very amused expression as they went to their respective cars. Once inside, Izuku clipped the seatbelt in before curling up and facing Mirai.
"Is it okay if I go to sleep?" she asked quietly.
He reached out and ended up running his fingers through her hair. "It's fine," he replied just as quiet and watched her close her eyes under his touch.
Mirai settled in for a long drive.
When they reached the house, it was getting dark and the four of them made quick work of transferring all of the luggages into the home. It was already furnished and set up to be lived in, surprising Izuku.
It was a traditional home outfitted modernly, so they would have all the ease of living. They entered the genkan and changed into uwabaki slippers, and set the luggages in the living room. Wondering what to do now, Izuku was going to ask until she saw Toshinori lead Mirai away. Instead, Midnight grabbed her attention.
"Midoriya-chan, I know you probably weren't expecting me and you really didn't want anyone to know about your pregnancy," which made Izuku flinch, "but female to female, I want you to know you can talk to me and ask me anything about this and about any womanly needs you have or need to know about," she told her gently, reaching to softly grasp her shoulders. "Whatever advice you need, call me and I'll do my best, okay?"
Touched and feeling lost, Izuku sniffled and nodded, letting Midnight pull her into a hug. At that moment, she really missed her mother and wished she could've let her know the truth…but she was too ashamed and didn't want her mom to get all upset and stressed about the situation.
"Thank you, Midnight-sensei," she muttered against the older woman.
But at least she had the small circle of people who did know willing to help her, and that was enough for now.
Mirai watched Toshinori uncertainly, not sure why the other man had led him away and wanted to talk to him.
"I wanted to thank you again for taking this upon yourself," Toshinori started, smiling grimly. "I know that with our differences and also with how you initially viewed Mido —Izuku, that it might've been a hard to swallow pill and an abrupt change of thought. That you not only willingly did so, but diligently and earnestly had taken to taking care of and comforting her…I sincerely cannot thank you enough."
He shifted on his feet. "Of course," he murmured. "Helping her and taking care of her is what's really important right now. Whatever problems we have, between you and I, and whatever issues I had with her…that would never get in the way of that fact."
"That's good," Toshinori said, before his countenance darkened. "Because words wouldn't be said between us, Mirai." He leaned in close to him, frowning. "Do not mistreat her, Mirai."
A flash of irritation and a bit of guilt hit him, but he scowled and looked back defiantly.
"That needn't be said," Mirai scoffed. "I have been and will continue to make sure Izuku is taken cared of and is my top priority."
And of course he would continue to apologize and do his best to make up for his past behavior and attitude towards her, just as much as he had been. Whether or not she was worthy of One For All wasn't a concern of his right now; he just wanted to make sure she was alright and help her smile again.
Smiles made the world and hers had been one of the most precious.
Mirai softened and grasped a thin shoulder. "I will take care of her and treat her right, Toshinori. I promise. I do care about her, despite it all," he admitted.
Toshinori softened too. "I just don't like her being sequestered so far away and being unable to see her."
He squeezed his shoulder. "She'll be fine with me."
"I know."
It wasn't long after that the two left Mirai and Izuku behind to get settled into their new home. Since it was dark and around dinnertime, they peered into their fridge and noticed it was mildly stocked.
"I could cook something easy," Izuku brought up and Mirai shook his head.
"Let me take care of it. You should be taking it easy," he said and she rolled her eyes but gave him a small smile.
"Okay, okay."
It was nice being pampered and by Sir Nighteye of all people. But she was still feeling out of sorts at having to be hidden away in this remote area, and with no one around them (her only company being him too). The reality of it was finally setting in and she wasn't sure about anything.
"Do you mind oyakudon?" he asked and she agreed to it.
"I can at least cook the eggs and chop the onions," she insisted and he finally relented.
"I'll cook the rice while you do the eggs," Mirai settled on. "Then we'll switch areas —I'll start on the chicken and you can cut up onions."
Glad to be able to do something and also distract herself, she went for the eggs while he focused on rice. In the end, it'll didn't take them too long to cook dinner together and she vaguely noted how domestic it all was.
They ate quietly at the table together, adjusting to their new home and wondered how this was so vastly different than all the other times they had dinner together at the Agency. Plenty of times they had eaten together like this, so why was it awkward now?
"We can leave the dishes for tomorrow," Mirai said after they'd finished eating. He looked as awkwardly as she felt, and it was so openly him that it startled her. "It's been a long day and we'll be busy tomorrow, so we should get an early night in."
"Yeah, okay," she muttered, shoving her hands in the hoodie's pockets.
The two of them made their way to where the rooms were, and he pointed out the one at the end of the hall.
"That's the master bedroom. You can have that one. The door on the left near it is mine and the one across mine is just a regular guest room."
She looked down at her feet, shuffling them before she looked up at him uncertainly. "G-goodnight, Mirai-san."
"Goodnight, Izuku," he echoed and she headed to her room without another word.
