Chapter 213: Karate Teacher Mouri Ran
Time passes...
Ran was replacing an injured Goda Ryota as a temporal karate instructor at the older man's dojo.
"Help!" Namisugi Toru yelled after the karate lesson. "Someone, come quick!"
"Namisugi-san?" Goda instantly recognized the younger man backing out from the Momohara building's general offiice.
"It's an emergency." Namisugi gasped. "Momohara is... Momohara is dead."
Conan snuck into the office and followed the side table's trail mark to find Momohara Noriyuki slumped over his laptop on the office desk with a gaping wound on the back of his head.
After Megure's team was called in...
"The victim is Momohara Noriyuki-san, 25 years old." Takagi reported. "He is the owner of this building and lived on the third floor. According to Mizuno-san, his estimated time of death is about three hours ago."
"Since the safe open, was he robbed?" Megure inquired.
"It's likely." Takagi concurred.
"Hey." Conan voiced.
"Conan-kun?" Takagi gawked. "When did you get here?"
"What are those marks on the floor?" Conan pointed to the track marks.
"Maybe there are from moving the side table." Takagi blinked.
"You could have asked more nicely, you know." Professor Agasa chided, Conan having called him to the crime scene for assistance. "I just called to ask about the marks on the floor."
"Thanks, Professor." Conan was giving the crime scene a more scrutinizing look. "It was really bothering me. Momohara-san was definitely attacked near the entrance. But the body was sitting at his desk chair."
"He was probably moved after the murder." Professor Agasa guessed. "But why?"
"Agasa-san, about the matter you called about, the lines on the floor were made by the victim's shoes scraping across the floor." Takagi reported.
"Detective Takagi, what is that?" Conan noticed the evidence bag.
"A document we found in the safe." Takagi replied. "But, it's only a matter of time now. We found fingerprints on the golf club used as the weapon."
"Hold it." Professor Agasa cut in before Goda was forced to make a confession. "You're half right and you're also half wrong. It took me a while to confirm something." he entered the interrogation room with Namisugi in tow. "Goda-san, could you tell us why your fingerprints were on the golf club used as a weapon?"
"Because I used that golf club to turn on the breaker." Goda replied. "I'd been using it every time the breaker tripped. The rest happened as you deduced; I moved the body."
"Even if it's true, Momohara-san's estimated time of death is 3PM." Megure pointed out. "Are we to believe that's just coincidence?"
"None of it is coincidence." using Professor Agasa's voice, Conan took over. "There's someone else who knows this building and Momohara-san well."
"Are you talking about me?" Namisugi gaped.
"You knew Goda-san used the golf club to turn the breaker on every time it tripped and you came up with a plot to frame him." Conan reminded. "I was first tipped off by the total absence of coffee cups even though coffee was made. Momohara-san didn't set the coffee maker because he wanted a cup for himself. Namisugi-san set the coffee maker's timer beforehand. After killing Momohara-san, he created an alibi for the time until the coffee maker was set. In the meantime, the coffee maker turned on, overloading the building's power consumption and causing the breaker to trip. If Goda-san turned the breaker back on like he always did, he'd discover the body and suspicion would fall on him."
"But Goda-san acted unexpectedly and unraveled his plan." Takagi realized.
"He never received the call from the police he expected once the body was found." Conan confirmed. "Namisugi-san became impatient and returned to the building where he discovered yet another unexpected thing: Goda-san had injured his arm. Assuming Momohara-san's body hasn't been found yet, Namisugi-san rushed to the second floor, where he was surprised once more. The body had been moved. Thinking Momohara-san moved by himself, he searched for a dying message. Once he was sure there was no such message, he unlocked the safe to make it look like a robbery instead."
"This is nonsense." Namisugi protested. "I don't have the money."
"I doubt we'd find the money anywhere." Conan agreed. "Namisugi-san, you knew the safe was normally empty."
"No." Namisugi gasped.
"And yet you didn't notice the envelope in the safe." Conan pointed out. "Because you knew it was always empty, you simply opened the safe and didn't look inside."
"How dare you treat me like the culprit when you have no proof." Namisugi demanded.
"Detective Chiba, were there any fingerprints found on the safe key?" Conan asked.
"Of course, mine and Momohara's fingerprints were on the key." Namisugi insisted. "I come to this office all the time."
"Namisugi-san, only your fingerprints were on the key." Conan revealed. "Momohara-san wasn't the most responsible man. You made that key hook, didn't you? Momohara-san probably didn't even know where the safe key was. After looking for a dying message, you tidied up out of habit. It doesn't make sense for the desk to be so tidy after a robbery. Those socks look brand new. Have you perhaps injured your leg; an injury you had to hide using those gaudy socks and under the pretense of being shocked."
"Momohara grabbed me really hard when I attacked him." Namisugi rolled down a sock to reveal to injury he sustained. "He didn't let go of me until the very end. He's always bullied me and made me do things for him. I've been doing all the work around here, too. He didn't even manage to make a single document. I'd been waiting for this opportunity for forever."
The following week...
"Nice to meet you." Usagi winked, introducing herself to her new work colleagues. "I'm Tsukino Usagi. Call me Usagi-chan.
"I'm Mieko." the team leader introduced herself. "I'll be your boss guiding you from now on."
"Mieko-senpai?" Usagi put on her innocent face. "Nice to meet you."
As the week went on, the female employees found Usagi to be rather troublesome; the blond would use fake tears to garner sympathy from the male workers whenever she was denied anything.
A few days later...
"I'm sorry, Mieko." Susumu entered the Raiden Izakaya Mieko had booked. "I ran late."
"Everyone." Mieko cleared her throat. "This is my fiancé, Susumu."
"We've been waiting for you, Susumu-senpai." one of the male employees greeted.
"Susumu-senpai?" Usagi's interest was piqued. "Is he our boss?"
"Susumu-senpai works in a different department and we've worked together on some projects before." Rie, one of Usagi's female colleagues replied.
"Susumu-senpai, please call me Usagi-chan." Usagi wasted no time in cozying up to Susumu. "You're so handsome. It's such a waste to go out with Meiko-senpai. Don't you think I'm more perfect for you than Mieko-senpai?"
"Why don't we talk about something else, Susumu?" Mieko twitched.
It's no fun seeing someone besides me being liked. Usagi fumed, watching Susumu and Mieko being lovey-dovey. Susumu-senpai is so hot and I swear I look better with him. He's probably one of those types who melt when they're pampered. There's no man who won't fall for someone as cute as me. "Susumu-senpai, I want to know more about you." she squeezed into the booth Susumu and Mieko were sharing. "Why don't we get to know each other more?"
"Susumu," Mieko cut in. "Don't you have something you want to eat? Let's order together."
"Susumu-senpai, you think I'm cute, don't you?" Usagi amped up her flirtations. "Is Mieko-senpai that good? You should switch to me."
"I'm going to catch some air." Meiko bit back her anger.
"Susumu-senpai, I fell in love with you at first sight." Usagi professed her love for Susumu just as Meiko returned from the washroom. "I love you. Give me the girlfriend seat. I want to hear your answer now."
"My answer..." Susumu was confused. "But I'm engaged to Mieko."
"But I think you and I go better together." Usagi whined.
"Are you saying that for real?" Susumu sighed.
"Of course." Usagi insisted. "If you're going to say no, then tell me your reason; a reason besides Mieko."
"Even if you give me money, I hate a woman that begs." Susumu flat out rejected the blonde. "I love women who stand on their feet. It's not always right to ask everyone for everything."
"You're lying." Usagi pouted. "Susumu-senpai is crazy. Don't you guys all think so? I'm cute, aren't I?"
"Tsukino-san, I don't think you should lower yourself anymore than that." Susumu cut through the awkward silence.
"This all happened because you rejected me." Usagi huffed.
"But you knew the outcome, didn't you?" Susumu pointed out. "It's admirable that you still went ahead and asked me out. But my taste is totally the opposite from you. So, even if I wasn't engaged, nothing would ever happen between us."
"You don't really understand at all, do you?" Usagi snapped. "Men love me. Why is this happening? That's it. I'm leaving now. No one's paying me any attention." with that, she stormed out.
